Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Is Barack Obama above criticism in the eyes of the liberal media?  The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank seems to think so.

Milbank is one of the more readable wordsmiths, largely because he’s not quite as predictable as other ink-stained wretches working for liberal-leaning news outlets.

But he lapsed into kneejerk liberal attack mode on May 23 when his candidate, Barack Obama, came under scrutiny from conservatives investigating Obama’s connections with people from the hard Left.

The best way to protect your candidate from accusations that could hurt his candidacy is to ridicule the messenger and thereby intimidate others from even thinking of going there.

That’s what Milbank did in “Obama as You’ve Never Known Him!”

The Page A-3 column is a non-stop ridicule of a press conference on May 22 in Washington, in which a news analyst and a researcher unearthed a history of radical and far-left elements among people who may have influenced the character and worldview of a Barack Obama, beginning in his high-school days.

The news analyst was Cliff Kincaid, president of America’s Survival, Inc., editor of the Accuracy in Media Report, and a longtime critic of the Post and other liberal media. The researcher was Herbert Romerstein, one of the nation’s leading experts on communism and the co-author of The Venona Secrets: Exposing Soviet Espionage and America’s Traitors.

Kincaid provided the attendees, including Milbank, with two substantial reports, the 44-page “Communism in Hawaii and the Obama Connection,” and the 36-page “Communism in Chicago and the Obama Connection.” But Milbank wasn’t really interested in the reports, which are heavily footnoted and documented and include several exhibits from congressional hearings into communist activities.

Instead, Milbank cast the gathering as a wild group of conspiracy theorists throwing out absurd, unsubstantiated charges.

Here are four of the methods that Milbank employed to ridicule the investigators:

  • Describe the sponsoring group in a demeaning fashion: “The group, assembled by something called America’s Survival Inc. ….”
  • Dismiss sarcastically even the idea of asking questions:  “implausible accusations…from the absurd to the merely questionable…finding plenty of sinister things to say about Obama—even if he didn’t trade cattle futures.”
  • Namecalling: Milbank takes a cheap shot at Romerstein, a former investigator for the House Un-American Activities Committee and former professional staff member of the House Intelligence Committee, calling him “ancient” and a “living relic.”
  • Cherry pick quotes out of context to make the speakers appear rash and perhaps in need of therapy.  For instance, Romerstein provided a lengthy historic account of communist influence in Hawaii since the early 20th century to draw a picture of some of the people influencing Obama when he was growing up. Milbank ignores the well-documented history to poke fun at one badly phrased sentence:

“‘We decided to start going back and seeing what things influenced him even before he was born,’ Romerstein announced without a trace of irony, before tying Obama to the Communist Party of the 1930s in Hawaii and Soviet spies on the island. ‘This is the atmosphere that young Barack Obama grew up in.’”

Milbank takes particular offense at Kincaid’s assertion that Obama was heavily influenced by a Communist Party-USA activist in Hawaii.  “The smoking gun? Obama’s ‘mentor’ during his teens, according to [event organizer Cliff] Kincaid, was a ‘key member of a Soviet-controlled network that was sponsored by Moscow and active in Hawaii.’”  Milbank describes this as “somewhere between guilt by association and guilt by invention.”

Yes, it’s hard to believe a claim that an American presidential nominee was influenced by a Communist, especially if you ignore the supporting evidence, as Milbank does.  Milbank does not even mention the “mentor’s” name. He is, in fact, the mysterious “Frank” in Obama’s book, Dreams of My Father, and was identified at the conference as the black writer and poet Frank Marshall Davis.  Quoting from Obama’s own book, as well as congressional hearings, interviews, speeches, articles, and books, Kincaid presented hard evidence that “Frank” is Davis, and that Davis was a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) and was in fact involved in a Soviet-sponsored network in Hawaii that was judged by Congress at the time as a security threat to the U.S. Milbank never acknowledges the evidence, even though he handled copies of the reports while the briefing was going on, suggesting that Kincaid just sort of made it up.

The real question is how much influence “Frank” had on the young Obama.  For his part, Obama in his book Dreams of My Father talks about “Frank” giving him advice on his life and career path, telling him to avoid compromise when he goes off to college and noting that black people feel they have a right to hate white people. Obama makes several references to “Frank” in his book.  Gerald Horne, a writer for a Communist Party publication, was the first to publicly name “Frank” as Frank Marshall Davis, saying Davis had “befriended” Obama’s family in Hawaii.

Kincaid went for additional confirmation, interviewing Dr. Kathyrn Takara of the University of Hawaii, who knew Davis and had interviewed him for a dissertation about his life and work. Takara, an Obama supporter, confirmed that “Frank” was Davis and that he was a significant influence on Obama’s life. She thought the influence was mostly positive and was unconvinced that Davis, who died in 1987, was a CPUSA member.

Takara told Kincaid that she thought that Obama concealed “Frank’s” true identity because Davis had a controversial lifestyle and used alcohol and hosted parties. Kincaid noted, however, that Obama didn’t conceal his own bad habits, including drug use.

Later in his piece, Milbank takes another shot at Kincaid, accusing him of “the unilateral decision to accuse [Weather Underground leader Bernardine] Dohrn of the 1970 killing of a policeman, a charge no prosecutor has made.”

In fact, Kincaid was quoting Dohrn’s husband, then-Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers, who had identified Dohrn as the perpetrator of the bombing which killed the policeman, according to Larry Grathwohl, an FBI informer in the terror group who wrote about it in his own book, Bringing Down America, and testified about it before the Senate Internal Security Subcommittee.

But Milbank makes it seem as if Kincaid himself made up a groundless accusation out of whole cloth.

The question of why Dohrn was never prosecuted is something that the media should pursue. Is there evidence, including Grathwohl’s account, that could be used to prosecute Dohrn? There is no statute of limitations on murder. A grand jury in California in 2007 did indict several black radical terrorists in the killing of a policeman in 1971. So a prosecution cannot be ruled out in this case even at this late date.

“In general, members of the terror group were not prosecuted for their bombings because the FBI’s desperate pursuit of them crossed the line into illegality itself,” Kincaid said. “Evidence was obtained using questionable means and it would have been thrown out of court.”

The real message of Milbank’s screed against the conferees was a general warning not to raise questions about Obama’s radical ties, or you’ll be ridiculed. Ask any questions about Sen. Obama’s formation of character and worldview, or his associations, and even if you pile up impressive and voluminous evidence, you will be pilloried as part of the “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy,” a term that Milbank actually uses sardonically in his third paragraph.

The message to the public is: “Pay no attention to any of this. Look the other way. It’s just a pack of lies from right-wing extremists.” If the discussion touches at all on communism, well, you know how the red-hunter Sen. McCarthy has become a handy brush to paint someone as a conspiracy nut. To his, uh, credit, Milbank did not actually use the word “McCarthyism.”

The warning also goes out to journalists not to look into any of this, either. After all, who in the liberal media would want to be accused of aiding and abetting the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy?

Jack's same ol' rant!

Please get a new one... We're tired of this one!

only the left sees b hussein as a person with a sparkling resume and the experience to lead america. The msms and the left hail this empty suit as their new messiah.

Meantime the right sees someone of no substance.. Just another status quo dim, selling the same old snake oil the dims have peddled for the last forty years.

B hussein claims to be a person of change but he has pledged loyalty to the unions, the trial lawyers and the teachers amongst others. With promises to give 900 billion to the UN as well as increase taxes additional amounts to fund this wasted expenditure and other dim spending plans we can expect no changes in wash under b hussein's lack of leadership

Come on now folks....

Have we in America, thanks to our illustrious educational system, reached a point where we would consider for President of our 57 states a man......who belonged for 20 year, to a Black Liberation theology church?

Who is friend with Ayers, an unrepentant terrorist. Who's fund raiser and friend is Rezko, a convicted felon. And the list goes on and on and just keeps getting larger. And his poor under privileged wife with a 6 figure income can only now be proud of America? What discrimination she must have suffered!

What insight and wisdom this man must posess. And America's security would depend on his judgement?

I'm a veteran - if this is the case, what did we serve for?

RE: October NON surprise.
The point is not only did it NOT happen it was physically impossible for the idiot whose account was the basis for the appropriately named Gary Sick's book to have been telling the truth. What part of all that didn't sink in?

Excellent post! I will look for your comments in the future.

Wrat Wrinkly
As I said, please continue. The more breathless and hyperbolic you follks become, the better Obama will look to the majority

Obama has been called a "Marxist" in this and several other threads. I have asked for someone to explain which of his policies are Marxist and why, and haven't yet received anythign liek a real answer. There are several folks who continue to use his middle name, and even John McCain has rejected that tactic.

Why are you YELLING about something that happened 28 years ago?

On the word ''mulatto''
--
Derived from the Spanish and Portugese term *mulato*, the word in question is a perfectly legitimate entry in the English language, and is used most commonly to denote a person of equally mixed European and African immediate ancestry.

It therefore qualifies perfectly as a descriptor of Barack Hussein "Mocha Marvin" Obama, the scumbucket socialist Cook County Candidate of the Voting Dead who is the heir presumptive to the Evil Party's presidential nomination this year.

I've noticed some several "Liberal" whiners posting on Townhall who have taken prissy exception to the use of the term "mulatto" both generally (calling it denigratory rather than dispassionately accurate) and in particular with reference to their sacred Empty Suit of Hope and Change.

From the "Liberal" we can (and do) expect nothing but bellyfeel doublethink - pace Orwell - with the completely dead-from-the-neck-up embrace of "Political Correctness."

But will the administrators of Townhall.com go along with "Liberal" desires to flag and remove posts that contain the word "mulatto" - which the neurotic socialist obviously finds offensive because it so precisely describes the single remarkable trait of their chosen standard bearer in this year's electoral game of heads-I-win-tails-you-lose?

Anyone care to comment?

Bearing in mind the possibility that the Website administrators are likely to expunge anything you post using the "M" word.

is the poster child for the hubris of the left. The left of this country is lazy and weak but mostly they think they already know it all and have nothing left to learn.

Vote Bob Barr
McCain is not up to the challenge of preserving American ideals.

Vote Libertarian.

Vote Bob Barr.

Earth to Jack
(OFF)!

WHAT part of heavily foonoted and evidenced commentary can't you understand? Just how colossally dense are you anyway. EVERY time a conservative group tries to get out the truth above an unvetted or poorly examined candidate they are accused of character assassination and "swiftboating". Swiftboating simply means telling the hidden truth about a liberal idol.

What about the BASELESS tripe YOU PEOPLE tried to float about the "October Surprise" re: Bush 41? That was PROVEN 18 ways from Sunday to be a lie. First of all the so-called "CIA pilot" claimed the elder Bush was seathed NEXT TO HIM in an SR-71 Blackbird. What bilge!!! Have you ever SEEN a Blackbird? It's an INLINE 2-seater and there are to SEPARATE cockpits. IF Bush had wanted to fly to Paris secretly the pilot would have been told to get ready for takeoff and Bush would've entered the rear cockpit AFTERWARD and not left till the pilot was out of the hangar. TWERP that you are!!!!

voting in support of your political outlook is neither bigoted or racist.

The idea that somehow not voting for the most liberal senator who has shown he lacks an understanding of the world and has no clue about basic economics is ludicrous.

From his campaign of hope of change we know he opposed the invasion of iraq six years ago as an obscure state senator who lacked accerss to the information congress had to vote for the war.

But based on what he has told us to cast your vote for b hussein means to support his plan to give $900 billion to the UN hoping that corrupt organization of muslim loving and democracy hating dictorators will somehow end world poverty.

To vote for b hussein means you want to pay an additional 10% to 15% in additional taxes to fund his expansive govt which includes more affirmative action and set aside programs.

To vote for b hussein is to agree with his ideas that even though he has daughters growing up in a priviledged househopusehold he still believes they will need affirmative action programs to succeed as adults. This indicates he has no faith in his own ability to be the great race unifier.

To vote for B hussein is to vote for another status quop dim who has pledged loyalty to the unions, to the trial lawyers and the teachers. Not any new vision with those positions

And the list goes on and on why not to vote for b hussein

Print it once a month!
throught Nov. This or articles like in detail such as this need to be at the disposal of those of us who have a bad feeling about the guy. Party aside Obama gives alot of people cold chills. I think he's one big fat lie. Anything that comes off so good and so perfect is not to believed. The more we know now the less we'll have to regret later.

I'm waiting for a BIG conservative to really come out and BLAST him!

Rubicon wrote in #26:

---------------

I absolutely agree. Plus, he will nominate for SCOTUS judges who will support his speech-squelching, thought-control policies.

I have the fear that even McCain, should he win the election, will only appoint those he believes will not overturn his landmark, First Amendment-gutting legislation, McCain-Feingold.

Not looking good for free speech either way.

Don't Knock the Messiah off his Pedestal
So..we can't talk about:
Michelle Obama, Rev Wright, the other two pastors or his church. We can't talk about Tony Rezko or his wife. We can't talk about Frank Marshall Davis, the avowed Communist and Pedophile, and his relationship with Obama. We can't talk about the Weather Underground and his two best terrorist friends. We can't talk about his race. We can't talk about his association with ACORN, MOVEon or George Soros. We can't talk about his lack of experience. We can't talk about his foreign policy Kumbaya declaration with terrorists. We can't talk about his ears. If we talk about any of these things, we are nothing but a bunch of racists. Well, character means something. Words mean something. The kind of change he wants will turn us into the United Socialist States of America. Wake up people.

Character versus Skin Color
Martin Luther King dreamed of a day when one would be judged not be the color of their skin, but the content of their character.
Looks like that day is not yet here since the media have obviously decided to eviscerate the character of anyone who actually asks real questions about the lifelong character development of Barack Obama.
My vote is not for Barack, not because he is black, but because he is a radical socialist leaning toward communist. The world he envisions, his socialist utopian vision, is not one any free thinking person would ever want.
I have decided not to vote for him because his socialist connections, development, and historic legislative record, are not what i think America wants or needs.
For this decision, I fully expect to be called a bigot, a racist, and a radical right wing extremist. In truth, I am an American who believes in the free market, private property rights, limited government, low taxes, & the rights of the individual before the lockstep socialist collective.
I also fully expect Americans will learn very little about Obama's character development because the media will shield his background as was done in the Milbank article.
Long live free speech. If Obama is elected & starts appointing bureaucrats, I fully expect we will see serious impediments to actual free speech rights. They will be couched under the guise of harmony, equality, and hate speech protections, but all will be intended to and designed to suppress free speech rather than protect Americans.

Speak up Jeremiah
One guy the press can't shut up is Jeremiah Wright. And it looks as if he taking back control of his church. If he's willing to sink Obama by exposing him for the fraud that he is, I'd be willing to support calling of the IRS from revoking the church's tax-exempt status--which should have been done by now.

On Our Future and Other Things
Dana Milbank has often expressed a desire to be spanked, bare bottom, draped over a black man's knee.

By the end of Obama's administration, what we now know as America will be referred to as the Western Republic of Zimbabwe, with inflation at 100,000 per cent and nothing being produced because all the non-white farmers and businessmen taken off their property.

For those disenfranchised who voted Democratic in 2008, I will giggle with delight at seeing them homeless, impoverished and starving.

Missing the point
Almost everyone on the left and a surprising number of media, journalistic and even political cartoon types on the right, seem to be so agog over the fact that a "Black Man" is the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party, that the nagging question of who he is and what his policies would do to America, is, for them, moot.

To those who are so inebriated with the euphoric delight that you have cleansed forever, your racial guilt, a sobering note: We are electing the person that will lead the United States of America and all the people therein, not simply an icon of pigmentation.

To paraphrase Martin Luther King, we must look at the person for their character, not the color of their skin. Far too many seem more mesmerized by an ebony idol than concerned about the consequences of choosing symbolism over substance.

Moonbeam? I assume you didn't agree with my post. Which part? I never posted to Jack as your comment implies. A little help.....

BO'S BUDDIES
Maybe BO could have learned from the following (If anything positive about American patriots has been taught by "progressive" academia since the Sixties):

“Associate with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for it is better to be alone than in bad company.” - George Washington

Ayers, Wright, Davis, and Fleger, among others, are representative of the socialists, communists, and/or racists who have had a profound influence in shaping BO's radical leftist ideology.

Clinton’s words to attack Obama

Yellow journalism
has taken a whole new meaning, these so called journalist/reporters are moral cowards i.e. YELLOW. They have the arrogance and the
ability to propagandize because they are too lazy to do any real investigative work. They are too cowardly to look through the smoke to see the truth, because then they'd be looking at themselves in the mirror. They are not only cowards but are stuck on stupid, they truly believe they are now the arbitors of all news, and can edit out what disturbs them. They are
the fifth column, and don't deserve the Constitutional protections they have, they haven't lived up to the call. It's too bad we can't have the daily independent papers we used to have and publishers/editors with guts and patriotism instead of these mealy mouthed, pasty faced girly men.

Maldain
The question is actually for those who claim Obama is a communist or socialist. I have read the claim many times here on TH, and I have asked for exampels a number of times. Thus far, no one has been able to provide one. I guess now it is up to you.

If it is "obvious" as you state, then you should be able to provide a few examples of Obama proposals that qualify as communist or socialist.

As to whether its pejorative. Of course, in the US, calling a presidential candidate is a pejorative.

Hard for McCain
It's going to be very hard for McCain to run against a candidate the press put in a bubble. The press are going to protect Obama and not allow anything negative to be printed about him. If it gets out through the 527's the press will go after these groups. It has never been this bad.
Could you imagine any other candidate getting this far with this much baggage ? He is their black Messiah and they will shield this guy with their dead bodies if need be.

Renny and Maldain
I am always quite surprised, by the level of stupidity, found in some Americans. There is but one economy.Socialism,Communism,Fascism and Capitalism are political interpretation of that economy. The "Rich",who run the world have a permanent state,it is called Socialism. Why?Because they have all the money and society lives according to their mandates. There are "Bills" in congress right now that are Socialistic.Do you even know what they are?Hell NO.If you are going to debate an issue,at least take the time learn it.It is your system, that allows the fluctuations between Socialism,Fascism and Capitalism.Corporations control parts of your economy now,and you can't even tell when Fascism is in play."Dumb As"...

Jack is Loyal Demo in disguise
As western moonbeam states Jack makes the point alittle to easy. I think he is just another Loyal Democrat using the satirical trick of seeming to talk like a deranged liberal. We are on to you Jack. You are really a right leaning man with a wicked sense of humor. Using all of the tactics described in the artical was a dead giveaway!

Any future comments by Jack should be viewed right winger's attempt to pose a left wing nut case in a not so suttle attempt to be humorous.

NPR
interviewed a black woman. She was in awe of Obama because she never ever thought she would live to see a day when she had the oportunity to vote for a black person for president.

She was hopeful now for the future because Obama represented a situation that she never dreamed possible "That a person could be looked at for their qualifications and not their race."

But why is she voting for Obama? Because he is black. Hmmm.... it would seem his qualifications don't mean squat, only his race.
The NPR interviewer failed to press her in her hipocracy.

re: Jack
His comments are exactly what this article is about. Perfect example!

re: Jack
Just curious what innuendo or falsehood is there in stating Obama is a socialist or communist? It's not an innuendo and judging from his proposed actions if he gains office it's not a falsehood. So how can stating the obvious about a man be character assassination? Unless, of course, you think being a socialist or communist is a bad thing. Or do you think being a socialist or communist is a bad thing for a candidate for the office of the President of the United States is a bad thing? If you do then does that mean you don't think Obama who has been proposing socialist and communist solutions of problems both real and perceived is unqualified for office and mentioning his "credentials" might damage his chances for electability? Or might your thirst of power be over riding your common sense causing you to back somebody who not only is unqualified but would certainly see your posts as a threat and deal with you as all good leftist deal with threats.

Obama is a 19th C. socialist
with pacifist and racist characteristics, reprehensible friends and promoters, and radical Harvard law agenda.

Cons., Reps., independents, and disgruntled Dems. (like white workers and women) will have to soldier on as if the MSM was the leftwing cabal that it is.

The only facts about the MSM that are worth noting is the NYTimes is in serious trouble, cannot sustain ads, cut its format 2" last year, let over 500 employees go since 2004, and isn't appealing to the NYC suburbs.
The LA Times has been bankrupt for over a year, and I can't imagine why it's still printing.

The Chic. Tribune was bought by Murdock (as the WSJ) and no longer marches only on its left foot.
Katie Couric has cost CBS News 10% of its viewers and the networks in gen. are losing 4-5% audience every year.
The fastest growing tv news is FOX, and it still doesn't have the affiliates or reach of any network org.
Why Am. news org.'s that rightfully helped promote mid-20th C. civil rights and made an icon of Martin Luther King, Jr., should still feel any white guilt is unfathomable unless:

Liberals are ready to acknowledge that their promotion of the welfare state depedency, the drug culture, and the *sexual* revolution (with abortion), all murderous to black culture and the minority communities in general, is LIBERAL FAULT,
but I doubt any liberal wants to step forward and decide to fess up that he/she has spent 50 years degrading and denigtrating black and brown people in order to make them HELPLESS victims and fodder for the prison system.

Re Jerseyvet
While I certainly agree that Obama is a socialist or communist and shouldn't be our President as he doesn't appear to be able to make an actual decision about much of anything of substance.

I would like to point out that yellow journalism has always been alive and well in this country. The real difference between the past and now is there used to be a disparity of views and now the media produces essentially a single leftist shout.

About the only good news in this kind of situation if the leftist do take charge the media types and movie stars will be the first to be put up against the wall. The leftist politicians who might be rivals will be the second ones put against the wall. So it will be a few years before these buffoons get around to the common folk.

Please Sir, May I Have Some More?
Pray continue. The more people call Obama a communist, emphasize his middle name, whine about his supposedly hidden Islamic beliefs, or engage in any of the other far right loon tactics the more the general electorate will reject such blather.

You may have missed the memo, but character assassination by innuendo and falsehood no longer works for Republicans.

Red scare
If Obama isn't a communist, he certainly is a socialist, and both outlooks are comrades in arms.

The next "red scare" is the liberal attack on those who dare question Obama about anything.

Say NO! to socialism - say NO! to Obama.

Radical Journalists & White Guilt
Are there any competent, professional, unbiased professionals out there today? It seems to me most of these Obama journalistic toadies are saying, in effect, to Obama, "I got your back."

We already knew that the 4th Estate was in the Democrats' backpocket but this Democrat/Socialist Fifth Column is really blatant in their affection for a biracial candidate whose association with radicals is well documented and needs to be given closer scrutiny.

After all we really do not want the label four years from now, "Worse than Jimmy Carter," attached to a President Obama just because "journalists" are swooning today over a questionable, inexperienced product of the corrupt Chicago Democrat political machine.
