Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Ask Clarence Thomas what he enjoys doing and he’ll tell you about driving his RV across America or cheering for his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers. That hardly sounds like the life of a U.S. Supreme Court justice, but in the case of Thomas, he wouldn’t have it any other way.

With his new memoir, “My Grandfather’s Son,” topping the New York Times best-seller list, Thomas has had the opportunity to connect with “real” Americans -- ordinary citizens who, he says, embody the true spirit of our great nation. His book tour has taken him from the East Coast to the Midwest and will reach Southern California next month.

Along the way, I’ve been fortunate to hear him speak twice -- once at a private dinner for bloggers and again last week at an event sponsored by The Heritage Foundation. I left both events feeling inspired and energized by Thomas’ positive attitude, sound advice and commitment to principles.

I wish every American had the opportunity to engage with Thomas in the same way. Hearing him speak about his remarkable life not only dispels the misperceptions painted by the media, but it also yields valuable insights about humanity and the state of our nation

My encounters with Thomas have produced some important lessons. The one that stood out last week came from his answer to a question about the level of political discourse in Washington -- something that has frustrated me since I arrived here six years ago. If anyone is qualified to answer this question, it’s Thomas, who called his confirmation hearing in 1991 a “high-tech lynching.”

Thomas chose to tell us about the importance of manners in society, particularly when raising children. For whatever reason, Washington politicians appear to lack those manners -- contributing to the coarse nature of politics.

“People in this town think it’s really cute to make little, nasty comments about people,” Thomas told the crowd last week. “That really makes you a big person because you just came up with some cute slur. That’s what gets over in this town for being genius.”

He said it would be unthinkable for such conduct to be tolerated in other professions. Take a hospital operating room, for example. “You would figure out a way to limp out of there, crawl or feel your way out. Now, if we would not allow that in the operating room, why do we think that’s a good way to choose who will have control of our nuclear arsenal?”

Asked about his personal tribulations, Thomas shrugged and explained the contrast between his life and that of his grandfather. “How can I complain to him -- no education, no father, raised in part by a freed slave in the Jim Crow South? He never complained. My grandmother never complained. How can I tell him that as a member of the United States Supreme Court I can complain? I have every reason to be happy, none to be sad.”

During his 16-year tenure on the Supreme Court, Thomas has continued to endure criticism. Yet it doesn’t bother him. “I’m more of an idealist today than I’ve ever been because this document [the Constitution] is critical to the way we live our lives,” he said in response to one question. He later added, “In this business, right is still right, even if you stand by yourself.”

It’s that attitude that helped Thomas through the hard times he’s faced since coming to Washington in the early 1980s. He said his experiences have taught him about what’s really important in life. Reflecting on a visit with seriously injured Iraq War veterans, Thomas said he felt small when they kept apologizing for taking up his time, even though they were the ones who deserved the attention.

“As you look at the grave sites, whether they are in Arlington or some foreign shore, or you look at the Vietnam Memorial, so many people made it possible for us,” he said. “Each year I take my law clerks at the end of the term to Gettysburg so they can understand why those people died to give us the Constitution and kind of country we have.”

Make no mistake, Thomas’ life has had its ups and downs, but he puts it in perspective in “My Grandfather’s Son.” As he wrapped up his remarks last Monday, he said he hopes his memoir offers inspiration to people who read it.

“If you look at the first line in my book, I was 9 years old when I met my father. Boy, things aren’t looking real good here,” he explained. “The house burns down -- they’re really not looking up. So [we] move to this terrible slum. Now things are looking really bad. But the story doesn’t end where it’s really bad. It’s just beginning.

“The point of the book is that just because it looks bad today doesn’t mean it will be bad tomorrow. In fact, it might be great.”

There are few examples better than Clarence Thomas of someone who, through perseverance and hard work, did in fact turn out great.

Not really that far fetched

Concerning Anita Hill
"...I came up with the theory that she was harassed by someone else and attributed the actions to Justice Thomas at the time of the hearings. I know that it is far-fetched, but the overall effect of phrasing of the comments, the details, etc. led to that impression."

But I doubt it. I'm not sure either how the accusations got made public, but I wouldn't doubt that Kennedy or his staff might have done it. The man always has had a big mouth, and when he's drinking, NOTHING he says would surprise me.

Anita Hill, on the other hand, I never believed for a second.
Her story just sounded too coached and came out at a time WAY too convenient for the Democrats, who were getting desperate for a way to block Thomas from the SCOTUS.
Aside from that, I saw real inconsistancies in her testimony that just sent up all kinds of red flags.

Concerning Anita Hill
I thought it was significant that when she first "came forward" Ms. Hill did so under the condition that she be able to speak to staffers and give information to the Senate committee anonymously and in secret. The allegations were leaked to the press (by one of Senator Kennedy's staffers, if my memory is correct) and the furor got so heated that she had to come forward and testify. Not exactly the picture of the Oppressed Woman Courageously Stepping Forward To Right A Great Wrong that some people have suggested.

At the time, I listened to Ms. Hill's comments and those of a couple of other witnesses to whom she supposedly made contemporaneous disclosures about the harassment. I came up with the theory that she was harassed by someone else and attributed the actions to Justice Thomas at the time of the hearings. I know that it is far-fetched, but the overall effect of phrasing of the comments, the details, etc. led to that impression.

Hey there Hockey Mom
I hope you're not holding your breath waiting for him to answer. I saw that question while reading through the posts. Wimpy cowards like him never answer questions asked of them, but they darned sure want their questions answered.

BTW, I also love your comment about Robert not having anything worthwhile to say about Justice Thomas and I totally agree. There's nothing he could say that I want to see/hear except goodbye forever Townhall.

Clarence Thomas: Monument to Mediocrity
Robert has it quite right. Thomas' eloquence is as difficult to find as George Bush's honesty.

is it okay to lie
OF course it is. We would respect the person hiding anne frank for lying; or the one who harbored the fugitive slave.

The question whether the law you are violating is reasonable.

The laws we have about harrassment are not reasonable; no one has right not to be offended and going crying about.

There is such thing as harrassment; but that involves some continous interruption of your activity; so if you are not able to do your job because someone is continaully bugging be about anything that is harrassment. But remarks here and here are not harrassment.

Hence, I see nothing wrong about lying about such unless you re responsible for passing such laws as was Clinton who signed into the law allowing a fishing net to be used to question any women in the world who might have had contact with him. A ridiculous law.
I did not vote for it. Republicans did. And Thomas and others have become victim of such; and just like ambulance chaser lawyers, you will find people to file complaints about anything; racism, sexism; you name it.

Conservatives are blind
Everyone misses the point. It is totally irrelevant whether Thomas made any off color remarks. No where were there charges of some quid pro quo.

What has happenned in this society is that now a crime to be offended.

Just imagine, your boss comes over to you at the water cooler and says: If you believe in jesus, you will go to heaven". I dont believe in that stuff, but no way would I be offended; I would smile.

However, we live now where someone could make a complaint that they were offended whether the aforementioned or sexual comments.

It is beyond me if some woman at work said to me"
I think you have a small pen is that I would make a complaint

IF it is true, I might feel who knows; but one is suppose to handle staff and not go crying.

IT is conservatives along with liberals who voted for these kinds of laws. that is where the fault lies.

Take the Bill Clinton case. There was no reason to call Monica; she did not make an harrassment complaint. But the law conservatives voted for allowed for this travesty; of course Clinton signed the law so he deserved it. But it is the law that is at fault.

The book and the video
Justice Thomas is an inspiration and his book is reflective of his true depth. After reading it here is what I said about his book - http://drtaxsacto.blogspot.com/2007/10/my-grandfathers-son .html

Hockey Mom
Thanks! Got distracted and you beat me to it. Jetpilot is a regular troll here.

I guess he means Thomas got the appointment to the Supreme Court through affirmative action.

A tad racist of Jetpilot don't you think?

USMC Lt.
My whole hearted respect for what you are doing and my eternal contempt for despicable, loathsome creeps such as 'Robert' who disgraces the very name he answeres to. Unfortunately, trashy, disrespectful and dishonorable behavior such as he displays on this board is not unusual. Where 'Robert' can find self respect is beyond my comprehension.

They and their ilk simply hope that something is killed so that they may feed on the carrion. In other words, they are maggots.

Happy T-giving - and stay out of harm's way. And know that the population of this country truly appreciates what you are doing.

Bitter
For a man who has been given so much he is one angry bitter man. He is scary. Some people are never happy.

Hockey Mom: See just how delusional

he is????

It's really a shame, isn't it. Of course, wobbie has been busted so many times, and has claimed so many outrageous, unrealistic things, that the little twit has NO credibility, and no one believe anything he says or claims.

Yet, he keeps on making a total fool of himself.

NO WAIT! There is ONE person. halD seems to believe the little twit... but then halD is one pathetic liberal who will believe anyone who isn't a Conservative.

Hockey Mom: What did I tell you???

The twit, wobbie, doesn't get it that NO ONE cares what he thinks about anything!!! Yet he continues posting his insignificant, irrelevant, trivial, and stunningly stupid views.

Lemonade: "Flirting?"

I don't think so! Haven't the foggiest notion of what you're talking about.

Hockey Mom: Isn't that the most

amazing thing you've ever read on any thread on any site???

"... he [roberto] said that the Lt. could post whenever and wherever he wanted, as long as he didn't use his rank in the USMC as part of his screen name."

Some little insignificant, irrelevant, trivial, contemptible, little twit with the audacity to try to tell the LIEUTENANT what he can and cannot use as a screen name!

I can tell you this about the LIEUTENANT; he has more guts and honor in his little finger than that twit, roberto (aka wobbie) could even imagine.... even with his very over active imagination, which of course accounts for his over blown view of himself.

I'm sure that when the LIEUTENANT returns from this tour (sometime in Feb. I believe) I'll be able to look at wobbie's posts with a little (not much though) humor. But while the LIEUTENANT is in Iraq, in harms way, taking care of business, there is nothing humorous about little wobbie!

Anne
Ah, so you are on this column flirting with the
guys here also.

Don't you have a life anywhere else?

dsslm: You may have a point, but NOT

in THIS CASE!

As I posted above, a very dear and close friend worked for Thomas when he was head of the EEOC, and saw, FIRST HAND, what was going on...

Hill's accusations weren't even close to the truth. She shamelessly threw herself at Thomas to the point that her co-workers at the EEOC were embarrassed by her actions and embarrassed for her.

No one was even a little surprised that Thomas wouldn't allow the door to his office to be closed when she was there.

And, to add insult to injury, hill was furious that Thomas' wife was white.

She was and is nothing but a shameless little harpy who would do anything to bring down the man who had no interest in her.

Sexual Harassment Once Common
Interested in African-American history, I really had to struggle with whose testimony I believed but in the end I believed Anita Hill’s.

I remember the conjecture of why she waited so many years to bring the matter of then Mr. Thomas’ character up. Given the gravity of the pending Supreme Court appointment, it was the right time for her to speak up because his decisions for the nation would include those on sexual harassment.

But also there’s the matter that only a woman who had experienced sexual harassment on the job would understand—that sometimes it takes--and especially used to take--years before the woman felt confident enough to start speaking out or begin proceedings on the matter. Many, many women were sexually harassed on the job decades ago. There’s anecdotal evidence and published evidence. Women generally had to take it to keep their jobs the same way that African-Americans had to endure indignities in the workplace. Many people, including other women, don’t believe these things occurred but sexual harassment tended to happen to younger, less experienced women because men knew they would be more easily intimidated and less likely to talk.

I remember my feelings about then Mr. Thomas’ remarks about a “high-tech lynching.” It seemed inappropriate especially given that another African-American, Ms. Hill, had to go through similar embarrassment. I believe that Mr. Thomas made the numerous sexual harassment mistakes, to which he alludes as his drinking days. I also believe strongly that Anita Hill had a responsibility to women and to the nation to speak out to ensure that the matter of sexual harassment in the workplace be given it rightful attention.

Thomas’ new book once again slanders Ms. Hill, who has been through quite enough, thank you.

Read Ruth Marcus’ recent summary after covering “every excruciating hour” of the Thomas hearings:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/1 0/02/AR2007100201822.html

MellorSJ2: Huh? I never said I thought I

was funny..

You, and your lefists, on the other hand, are hysterically funny.

Okay, so you're also pathetically limited, but that doesn't mean you're not also quite funny... in a sad sort of way. But you do make me laugh.

Art: You're right, which is why we

have our DNRR (Do Not Read or Respond) List.... and roberto is on the top of that list.

Hockey Mom: Well, you're right...

It isn't any of roberto's business, and it wouldn't even occur to any normal, mentally healthy person to question, much less attack the LIEUTENANT.

And the really strange thing is, every single one of roberto's attacks is aboslutely and completely UNPROVOKED!

roberto just goes off like a nut case! Go figure.

I do have to tell you, though, those two dads had me laughing until tears were streaming down my cheeks and a few times until I almost couldn't breathe. Some of the times I didn't even get the "inside Marine humor" but just watching these guys was hysterically funny.

But the funny thing was, they simply confirmed what we'd all figured out about roberto a long time ago...

They also confirmed exactly what I'd posted several times, and will continue to post as often and as long as I have to, which is...

“A serving military officer is REQUIRED by his office to REFRAIN from making public "VALUE JUDGMENTS" on the trend of policy, as established by the CIVILIAN LEADERSHIP.”

Little "Walter Mitty" roberto is TOAST!

Robert
If everybody would refrain from responding to Robert's inanities, we'll likely hear lots less from him. Please pretend he doesn't exist and don't even read his posts. He subtracts from the sum of both knowledge and wisdom! When you respond to him, he spouts another batch of nonsense. Leave him alone.

Anne claims
"For the most part, however, we just ignore roberto."

Bizarre.

After a 250+ word post, one of many I might add. Not only that, Anne is showing Robert's posts to all her friends.

More conservative 'thinking' I'm afraid.

PS to Viruddh: Anne is NOT hilariously funny, IMO. She just thinks she is. LOL! (As she would say.)
Or 'I think I just hit a nerve. LOL!' About WHAT?

Oh well, it keeps her off the streets.

Hockey Mom; Oh, and one more thing...

These former Marine/now CIA dad did say yesterday that field promotions are NOT common, but they do happen...

The thing is, the LIEUTENANT IS and extraordinary young man... and if it could or would happen to anyone, it would be to THIS YOUNG MAN!

The LIEUTENANT will go places in life... while poor roberto will most likely be stuck in his mom's basement.

Hockey Mom: Funny you should ask!

robert is one of the troll posters who came on TH many (too many) months ago who has claimed to be everything and has done everything and is an expert about everything.

Problem is, it wasn't too long before we all pretty much figured out that he was typical "Walter Mitty" who is actually nothing, has done nothing, and isn't an expert about anything.

He claims to be a Navy Capt., but like everything else, it turns out to be just another fabrication in his little mind.

The USMC LIEUTENANT, is in fact, a young man on his third voluntary tour in Iraq. (I happen to know him and his parents and uncle.)

And, he recently was promoted (in the field) to LIEUTENANT. Little roberto seems to be so put out about it that he can't stop denying it happened, so he attacks the LIEUTENANT every chance he gets. (Probably because he just can't stand that someone actually accomplished somthing that roberto only dreams about.)

But, yesterday while at my daughter's in VA for a birthday party, some neighborhood families attended... two fathers being former Marines and now CIA. We went over some of roberto's posts over the past few months, all of which the dads just howled... no way is roberto even in the military, much less an officer.

And, regardless of what roberto says (time and time and time again) it is possible, and DID happen that the LIEUTENANT did get his promotion in the field.

So, that's the short story. For the most part, however, we just ignore roberto.

Hey Katy & YLG:

Time for the twit roberto to go back on the DNRR List.

Those Marines sure had a laugh about the twit yesterday. No question that the twit is a liar and a fraud...

The most outrageous thing, however is the twit actually thinks we believe one word he posts.

LOL

He doesn't even merit a grade...

YLG
Fine, darlin and how are! you?
See Roberta's post under ours.
Dipstick thinks that the US Armay keeps him informed at all times!

The Don Q Cristal isn't on the shelves here. Have to buy a case.

katy!!
How are you??

I, too, am a fan of P.J. Rourke. BTW, the poster @ 12:36 PM has a bug up his you-know-what concerning USMC Lt. and his dad. Can't seem to let go of that bone....

How do you spell 'Roberto'?

M-O-R-O-N!!!

HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Talisman and Roberta
It is very hard to believe either of you when you have never heard of a field commission.

USMC LIEUTENANT: How right you are!

roberto is obsessed! And, that is a real indication of mental "imbalance!"

Anne
I feel like Golum looking at his 'Precious'...!!

Interesting side note: My father is a Reagan democrat. When the Hill hearings began, he followed them like a hawk, waiting for the excrement to hit the propeller. As the hearings became more intense, he started to see a pattern. The WOMEN were outraged, and the MEN were confused and wanted to placate them by 'feeling their pain'. One day, I think it was the fourth day of the hearings, he turned off the TV. When I asked why he did, he replied, " There comes a time when a man tires of a jealous woman, honey." Seems to me he had Anita Hill pegged down!

YLD: Actually, there is NO limit

to the moronic statements made today or any day as long as roberto is allowed on TH.

YLG: Yup! Got it right! :-)
And, not only that, they're going to confirm that roberto roberto is a fraud.. (which of course, we know he IS!!!)

The best part was the names they called roberto, and then apologized to me... LOL I thought it was a hoot.

roberto is TOAST!!!

One of my dearest friends worked

for Justice Thomas (before he was a Justice) when he was head of the EEOC.

She said that... he was the most fair and honorable person she had ever worked for, and that anita hill was nothing more than a sleezy harpie who threw herself at Thomas every chance she could.

In fact, Thomas NEVER allowed his office door to be closed when she was in his office.

And, anita hill was furious that his wife was white.

Anne
Let me get this straight:

The former Marines-turned-CIA guys were impressed with Jeff, but laughed out loud at Robert.

I'm shocked. Really, I am.....

USMC Lt.
I can't believe the idiot called Justice Thomas misogynistic! Try telling THAT to his wife!! HA!

Is there a limit to the moronic statements made today? Apparently not.

Hey USMC LIEUTENANT:

So glad you’re back from the field! :-)

And yes, as we were reading and laughing at roberto’s posts yesterday, YOU got a big shout out from these Marines. (The other parents just turned around and looked... Not exactly what everyone expected at a kid's birthday party. It was a real hoot!)

And, they said to tell you how impressed they are by you!

Justice Thomas
Talisman is right conservatives should not hold Thomas up as a great american,we should use the statists example of Jesse Jackass and Al Dulldon. There is two fine examples.GOD BLESS CLARENCE THOMAS

YLG: You could be right… of course.

I’m not familiar with “Kid Nation” but if it’s as vicious and barbaric as “Lord of The Flies” then I’m with you.

“… Roberto's rabid typing against USMC Lt. It seems almost....envious.” wobbie blew right by “envious” straight to emerald green with jealousy. And he’s just a limited fool. Don’t forget to flag his posts…. His 12:06AM post was as offensive as any.

Actually, NO military officer would have ever, ever, ever posted such garbage... not in a million years (which is one of the reasons we know that roberto is a little limited person and a fraud!)

Nice of these leftistas to prove exactly what Justice Thomas said.

I also held up Justice Thomas as an example to my kids, and still do although my children are now grown.

Anne
I'm sorry, but I have to differ on a point you made: I don't think DC is like "Lord of the Flies". I think it's more like "Kid Nation".

I have to wonder at Roberto's rabid typing against USMC Lt. It seems almost....envious.

As to the column, what can I say? I hold Justice Thomas as an example to my kids. He has overcome many obstacles and vicious attacks to be one of the most respected PEOPLE in our country. Every person that calls him names and disparages his service is an idiot.

Huh! It’s obviously NOT just in DC!

“’People in this town think it’s really cute to make little, nasty comments about people,…. That really makes you a big person because you just came up with some cute slur. That’s what gets over in this town for being genius.’”

Obviously, we see the same low class, rude, childish mentality right here on Town Hall.

And what's more, that low class, rude, childish mentality comes from the left!

Is it any wonder why Justice Thomas is a Republican? No!

Tool
Oh please. Thomas was an inexperienced, disliked and misogynistic appointment to the Supreme Court by a Repubublican hack for ideological purposes. He does not deserve the respect that Republicans insist he is due. Fortunately for us all, Thomas will have to deal with all this in due time - just as all the other lying, corrupt GOP tools out there.

Just to correct YET ANOTHER ONE

of the idiot fraud roberto's posts...

".... 20 year old direct commissioned LT that doesnt exist."

Actually, it DOES EXIST!!! It's not common, but neither is the LIEUTENANT a common young man! In fact, he's an extraordinary young man.

And, opposed to fraud roberto’s empty, senseless, accusations, the FACT that it DOES EXIST was also CONFIRMED by TWO former Marines (now CIA.)

And, just to further clarify the record, after reading only a few of robert’s idiot posts, they also confirmed that roberto is absolutely NO a military officer. No officer would post WHAT Roberto posts (because as an officer he’d be prohibited for doing so) and roberto’s writing… grammar, etc., is a obvious give-away that he’s too limited to be in the military.

roberto has been busted again!!!!

EXCELLENT book & EXCELLENT column!

"Thomas chose to tell us about the importance of manners in society..."

Exactly right! Good manners is the first and most basic “rule” in a civilized society. Consequently, it’s not difficult to see that DC is probably the most uncivilized place in the USA.

Just as Justice Thomas called his confirmation hearing in 1991 a “high-tech lynching,” DC has pretty much become the modern day version of “Lord of The Flies.”

A great American
Few Americans deserve to be called great before history has time to reflect on their life and career. Justice Thomas is one of those exceptions!

THAT DOES IT!!!! Please, EVERYBODY flag

robert's post.

It way past time that this despicable, reprehensible, sordid, vile, worthless, deranged person gets banned from TH.

And, when he comes back with a new IP and handle, we'll do it again.

Robert

Had you read Justice Thomas' book, I doubt that you would have started this thread with you snarky little comment. Not necessarily because you'd feel any differently about Justice Thomas as a person (although you might), but rather because you'd see what awful company your comment puts you with.

I'm assuming, of course, that you're capable of any feelings of shame.

michigander -- exactly!

When I first heard that Justice Thomas had released his book, My Grandfather's Son, I wondered "Why now?" He's too young to be contemplating retirement (I hope), and this sounded like the kind of memoir that you'd ordinarily see at the close of a career. But having now read his book, I better understand its value and immediate purpose.

This is not a book about a career, it's a book about a life. Without making any excuses for himself, or for the many instances where his performance was less than perfect, Justice Thomas offers an approach to dealing with life's challenges that all of us would do well to emulate.

Given his incredibly awful treatment by the cowardly villains Joe Biden, Ted Kennedy, et al., it is a wonder that his book shows virtually no defensiveness. He is entirely frank about his own human shortcomings.

In today's culture where we appear to enshrine the role of the "victim", Justice Thomas shows us a steadfast example of personal accountability. Under circumstances where so many of us would have cut our losses and left abandoned the fight feeling bitter, Justice Thomas decided to confront the challenge and call it what it was: a "high-tech lynching". We all can take a lesson from that.

This is a worthwhile read for every American -- whether you aspire to be a Supreme Court justice or not.

The thing that
makes the book totally believable to me, is that he doesn't sugar-coat or make excuses for his own bad behavior. He lets it all hang out: His failed first marriage (for which he blames only himself) and his drinking problems are only two of several examples from the book where he really beats up on himself, whereas it would have been easy to gloss it over or not mention it at all.

I'm grateful for Clarence Thomas
I remember the smear campaign. I watched the hearings from beginning to end. At the beginning I saw a man of tremendous integrity and character who appeared to be a shoo-in. Then came the sordid Anita-Hill-allegations. I thought this decent man would withdraw his name from consideration, rather than dignify the "long dong silver" testimony with a response.

Instead, he came back fighting and would not allow perverts and demagogues to "Bork" him. I am grateful he's on the court.

His presence assures losers like Robert an opportunity to exercise their right to free speech... even when they and their speech are stupid and classless.
