Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Gas prices have been heading down.  That’s the right direction.

AAA reports the “average price per gallon is below $2.00 in 30 states”.  That’s a good sign.

If the price decline levels off closer to one dollar per gallon, Americans will know that the industry and foreign suppliers have regained their collective senses; and the speculators have been routed out.

But, one wonders if the industry soothsayers - while saying “it is certainly feasible to see prices of 1.60 to $1.70 in the next few weeks” – would really prefer a brake to the price drop, that consumers feel is, to them, a needed break.

At the peak, Americans were paying well over $4.00 per gallon on average nationally. This week, the average price per gallon is running just under $2.00.  As a result, consumers are starting to feel like they can breathe again.

Despite the current gas price relief, growing numbers of Americans remain wary of domestic gasoline supply, gas prices, and fear for their economic future.  They are wary of the OPEC nations, who can throttle supply on political whim; and, they fear that, should they lose their job, how will they be able to buy food, gas, and pay for their home.

Their worry is understandable.  Perhaps, it is also wise - if their worry serves as a catalyst for demanding specific action by elected officials.

Consider this:

While growing numbers of Americans are overwhelmed with worry, politicians in Congress continue to fiddle with the oil reality while the American economy burns up.

So-called liberal incumbent’s ‘stuck in the mud thinking’ keeps our nation exposed to foreign manipulation of oil supplies.  If the American people do not, somehow, drag elected officials out of their muddy thinking now, the economic deterioration not only  will continue – it will accelerate.

So, what to do?

America’s citizens should demand real change regarding oil policy by officials – elected or appointed – at every government level.

The people’s dictum: ‘Stop all political games; Start domestic drilling now – inland and offshore’.

That immediate announcement, and prompt drilling implementation, will help ensure the continuing decrease in the price of gasoline at the pump, as well as other petroleum derivative products; and, by taking that action, the United States begins to grow oil independence, and strengthens national security, while shoring up our domestic economy.

Additionally, the direct and indirect jobs associated with domestic oil drilling will put significant numbers of people to work in good-paying jobs.  Of course, key here, is to let the free market work its ‘opportunity magic’ – with only these regulations: all new employees must be American citizens, and all new business enterprises must be exclusively American owned and based only in the U. S.

We can expect lawsuits from environmental groups.  To prepare, an ‘express lane’ judicial review process should be setup in federal courts to adjudicate every case in less than 45 days.

And, bi-partisan congressional leaders should establish - joint House and Senate - ‘judicial monitor teams’ tasked to - within three days of any unfavorable court decision - draft and bring to the floor new legislation to change, correct, or plug any loophole used by special interest groups to stall, or halt, any domestic oil drilling project.

Barack H. Obama is in the unique position to make this happen.  He should telephone fellow Democrats, first asking – and, if necessary, demanding – that they put ‘county first’.

The American people would prefer that Mr. Obama not wait till January 21st to make these necessary calls from the White House.  Rather, the vast majority of America’s citizens would celebrate all the way to next January 20th if the President-elect would pick up the phone, call Speaker Pelosi and Senate Leader Reid, and tell them…     “We’re starting domestic oil drilling now!”

ROFLMAO
You have got to be kidding. You think Obama, Reed, and Pelosi will agree to domestic oil drilling when the Democrats have been fighting against it for over 40 years. If anything, they will permanently ban offshore drilling along with oil shale. Oil is so last century. Get with the times. The Dems are going to replace the entire domestic car industry with solar, wind, and geothermal in the next 10 years and we will be saved. :)

All of the above is the way
Obama is too stupid to understand what ever energy we are using today we should produce it ourselves. As for all the other Democrats who think this idiot is going to alternative sources of energy our way to independence, their even stupider. Why didn't Clinton do it?

no wind tonite
Well, now that gas prices are getting to a reasonable level I guess we won't be needing any windmills, of course since the Govt. is going to be paying for them we will probably be getting them anyway.
Just some more money to add on to the deficit, wonderful living in America with all the smart liberals, ain't it.

No Cheap Oil for Amerika
Everyone knows our society is sick and evil. That we are so rich and powerful is unfair. That we tolerate inequality throughout society convicts us all as criminals against humanity. It is only fair that billions should be sent overseas to countries that hate us and would have us destroyed.

Nancy and Harry and the rest of the Democrat party understand the evil nature of Amerika and are doing their best to guarantee we do not produce cheap energy here. That would take money away from those that want us dead. Cheap oil is a bad thing and just encourages the industrial rape of Mother Gaia.

The Somali pirates should not be punished for taking a Saudi oil tanker. They are doing their part to fight global warming and punish Western Civilization for it's continued existence.

The world would be better off if all Amerikans would just go out to their garages and sit in their cars with the motors running. They deserve to die breathing the poison they are using to kill our planet. And now that gas is cheaper everyone can afford to do it.

A note to all Democrats, make sure the garage door is closed while the car is running.

American Gal vs "Citizen of the World"
Where's that plucky gal from Alaska when we need her? Oh I forgot, the media elites in NY, Hollywood and DC trashed her mercilessly every night on late night television in an effort to destroy her reputation. It worked too.

Too bad, we could use some of her non-lawyer, non-Ivory Tower common sense right about now.....

Instead we're stuck with an unaccomplished lawyer with socialist sympathies, who is so obsessed with his own "racial uniqueness" that he wrote two autobiographies, one while still in her early thirties! I kid you not; how pathetic of our boy Barry Dunham!

A lawyer who hasn't held down a real job IN HIS LIFE. All The Messiah offers is he gift of gab and his deeeeep, resonating voice which makes guilt-ridden white liberals swoon with pride. Including white liberal men who have homosexual fantasies about His Racial Righteousness.

God help the USA to wake up from this growth of government and the media-government class.

Congress
Congress did the best thing possible for gasoline prices: nothing! The more nothing Congress does, the better off we the people are.

God Bless and Protect - American Warrior
The American Warrior is someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness for Duty, Honor and Country.

The American Warrior is someone who frightens many people because they live in denial of reality, the American Warrior reminds those people that violence exists in the world.

The American Warrior has the capacity for violence towards those who threaten America and the American way of life.

The American Warrior is a constant reminder that there are terrorists in the land and those that wish to destroy America are already here on American soil.

The American Warrior on September 11, 2001, rushed towards the danger instead of fleeing from it, intent on defending and helping those American citizens in danger. Many American Warriors gave their lives that day and many more were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for America and its citizens.

Most Americans are glad that they were not on the planes that crashed into the WTC and the Pentagon - the American Warrior wished they had been on those planes because they might have made a difference.

American Warriors were on United Airlines Flight 93 and defended unto death America and its citizens with the cry "lets roll".

The American Warrior waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, America and its citizens.

"There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men." - Edmund Burke

This Thanksgiving, I salute the American Warrior, both living and dead. Men and women who serve in the Armed Forces, Police Forces, Fire Departments and ordinary civilians who rush forward to our defense instead of running from danger.

The American Warrior - God Bless and Protect You!

America's Blue collar middle class
I grew up at a time when the American dream was realized by a large group of blue collar middle class Americans. They were machinist, carpenters, mechanics and manufacturers who made a decent salary and were able to provide for their families. All of a sudden our "muscle jobs" were sent overseas and not to worry because the new blue collar jobs would be in the tech field. Then they sent those jobs overseas and all we were left with was employment in retail. Retail jobs always paid less than manufactoring jobs. All of this was done in the name of competition. American products were considered of higher quality than everyone else's, just as Japanese cars are thought of today. People paid more for American merchandise and there was prestige in owning an American manufactured item. My point, we really screwed up the system and need to take dramatic steps to get our economy up and running correctly. Energy independence is the first step. We need to start making stuff again, quality products and charge what we have to charge in order to make a profit. Our promotional line "America is back, the sleeping giant has awoken".

The US voters
are being scammed by the liberals into thinking by 10 years, oil can be replaced by wind, solar, geothermal and the replacement of present day cars with green cars. Our use of oil throughout industry and manufacturing is far too extensive and complicated as well as the technology to eliminate oil will not be there in 10 years.

Economic crisis.
If the USA had begun aggressive development of oil off all our coasts and aggressive research into oil shales, then we would be having no economic crisis! A pox on environmental whackos and most politicians!

Two Points
First, all the points made in this article are right on target. The American people must not be lulled into a false sense of security over the current low prices for gas.

Secondly, nothing stated in this article will be considered by the Dem Congress and especially the "cap and trade, bankrupt coal, end our use of oil in ten years" Obama administration.

If you are enjoying the current price level for gas and you want it to stay that way, instead of weekly fearing it will go up again, there is only one way to make it happen. It is about damn time that "we the people" let congress know what their marching orders are.

The symbol for this grass roots movement? A hand pulling a lever and a box with an "X" in it with the slogan of "your name here, got it!"

Sanity must prevail sometime
What we sorely need is a rational, comprehensive, energy plan devised by someone who has at least a rudimentary knowledge of economics. We must first acknowledge that we will never be completely energy independent until some new, hitherto unknown, source of energy is developed and that this will not happen overnight. Though carbon fuels have been demonized since 1988, when Al Gore made his first speech regarding global warming on the Senate floor, we still have nothing better to fuel our cars in terms of energy density. Coal fired power plants have been similarly denigrated even though they are burning cleaner now then ever in the past. To speak of bankrupting these companies is sheer madness as they currently produce 49% of our electrical power. Nuclear power plants have been beyond the pale since the minor accident at Three Mile Island was blown all out of proportion by our witless media. Wind and solar power sources will never be anything except minor players and would not be in existence today without government subsidies. We can only hope that we start taking meaningful steps toward producing energy from all available sources before the lights start going out all over the country.

Its only fitting
Its only fitting that Obama get stuck tyring to clean up the economic mess. His party caused it.

At the end of 10 years, there will be no wind farms, no solar panel farms. Just same old dependancy on foreign oil.

Its not that Liberals don't have the desire to switch to cleaner energy. Its just its clean energy technologies are not ready for mass distribution.

Solar and Wind can be used immediately away on a house by house basis. But then the Big Utility companies will oppose that because it will cut into their profits.

Ken, Your "LOGIC" is OSOLETE
Wind farms?
Solar panel farms?

As ALWAYS you are behind the times.
WHO NEEDS IT?
The technology of today is SELF SUFFICIENT ENERGY SOURCES.
That is why todays "greenies" are against massive footprint corporate energy plans.

Your logic on our economy is just as FALSE as our governments reports have stated.
From our OWN GOVERNMENT REPORTS comes a BIG PART OF THE ANSWER to fixing this GOP MESS.

Simple answer.......
Stop the CORPORATE WELFARE in OLD TECHNOLOGY and invest it in OUR FUTURE. The price comes down and we all benefit.

Stuck
Ken is stuck in the '60's with the incoming administration.

Lone & Buckskin
I am not stuck in the 60's. I am well aware of "Self Sufficent Energy Options" out there.

I am also aware that is not what Liberals in Congress want.

Therefore, since "Self Sufficent Energy Options" are not really an option and solar & wind farms are not enviormentally friendly, there will be no energy independance in our lifetime.

You will hear a lot of talk and more talk and still more talk but its not gonna happen anytime soon.

Just as since the 60's we have been hearing about education reform, and more education reform and still more education reform and nothing has happened.

Since the 80's social security reform and more social security reform and again more talk about social security reform. And again nothing happens.

Just keep electing Liberals and nothing will happen.

As former Liberal Democratic House Minority leader Dick Gephart said, " We don't want solutions, we want issues we can run on."

I think Obama's solution was....
...that if we put the right amount of air in our tires and got regular "tune-up's", we'd save "just as much" as "all the oil" from the proposed drilling.

Next thing you know, he'll be telling us to wear sweaters and turn our thermostats down, like a certain other Democrat President did.
Here's hoping Obama's reign ends up being approximately as 'successful' as that other president's was. I say 'as successful' because I don't want the country in tatters in 2012, but neither do I want Obama successful at spreading liberalism.

What I see happening, sadly, is that he and his cronies on Capitol Hill will vote to restore the ban on offshore drilling and gas will be going back up to over $3 a gallon, courtesy of your Democrat Party.

annfan from TN

I agree with you.

You mentioned tune-ups of autos. Most states now have some form of emissions testing for cars. Each inspection cycle taxpayers are paying in excess of $50 to get their cars inspected. A better solution if they are going to mandate something would have been to mandate a tuneup every 5 years. But then the companies that make the emission testing equipment wouldn't make any money. So the companies donate to the campaigns of elected officials and we end up with emissions testing and the taxpayers get fleeced again.

People who put their faith in government to "do the right thing" are just misguided.

Thomas Jefferson got it right. "Government that governs least, governs best."

Liberals support more government.

I agree the but...
Olivastro is living in a dream world if he thinks for one second the energy hating left will EVER allow the USA to drill for and exploit our own resources of oil and gas. They are socialists plain and simple. They HATE the idea that oil companies might make money even if it meant the US could be free of the slavery to oil imports from enemy nations (Iran and Venezuela). The left has sold their souls to the environmental loons and will never allow it. I predict before Obama's first term ends US dependence on foreign oil will grow to a whopping 90% as the US domestic oil industry finally collapses under the weight of regulation and government strangulation.

Reality of physics...
As a scientist (for 30 of my 48 years) I am amazed at the sheer volume of ignorance amongst the public regarding energy. Most people are completely ignorant to the harsh reality of the 3 laws of thermodynamics. Many seem to think there is some "silver bullet" to solve our energy problems. This is analogous to stikcing ones head in the proverbial beach.

The simple fact of the matter is the bulk of our energy needs are in transportation. We are importing 12 million BOPD for this. The bulk of this fraction is burned up for trucking of goods and services. The irrefutable fact is you CAN NOT propel an 18 wheel 80,000 lbs truck on a battery. The technology simply does not exists. And the technology will not exists for at least another 10 years and probably more like 50 years. In the interim what are we to do...just quit and wait for a solution?!?!? The only think that can replace foreign oil for our economic survival is either domestic oil or domestic natural gas. Natural gas is clean and any gasoline engine will burn it NOW with nothing more than a simple conversion. The USA and Canada has an abundance of NG. We could easily supply ourselves the energy we need for at least 50 years. IN that time we should be able to develop alternative to get us off hydrocarbons all together. But until then we MUST develop more oil and gas....because in reality (NOT fantasy) it is our only choice for the foreseeable future.

Ken
My apologies. I misread your comment.

Gasoline Prices
Democrats want the price of gasoline to be high in order to force the country to invest tax dollars heavily into "alternative" energy technologies.

Counter intuitive logic
Gasoline prices have been halved, and yet not a single drop of extra US oil has hit the market. Why? Because consumption is down and predicted to be down for the foreseeable future.

Think about this. If the effect of individual consumers limiting their dependence on oil has been such, what would be the effect of Obama announcing that we would divorce ourselves from dependence as policy, and put his money where his mouth is by shifting tax breaks and subsidies from oil production to alternatives?

Conversely, imagine the effect of Obama announcing US policy would be to continue our dependence by encouraging more drilling?

bryce1 From MI
Bryce,

The effect is obvious. You put more oil on the market and prices will come down.

Build more refineries and there will be less price spikes.

Currently, thanks to George Bush, the Federal Covernment will provide a Tax Credit of $3,800 if you put solar or wind power generators on your house.

The problem is the current cost is approx. $12,000 to convert. So the States need to also pass a tax credit to convert. Some states have already done so.

What Liberals in Washington want to do is to give taxpayer money to Corn farmers for ethonal, and tax money to companies to research alternative energy production keeping it under corporate control, profit making, and regulation.

Every time you read or hear about the results of some research project or another, what is the last line from the research? Ans. More research is needed. This corporate welfare scam will go on for years and years with no end in sight.

Ken
The most liberal estimates are that we could add an extra 2 mil dpd if drilling efforts began tomorrow. In the 100 mil bpd oil that would be a drop in the bucket. Especially considering that if the surge has in fact succeeded there will be adding a half million more bpd to the mix, and the recently discovered Brazillian field.

The notion that drilling here will have any signicant impact on the huge worldwide production is a fantasy, and the only beneficiaries will be the oil companies.

bryce1
During the oil price run up of the first half of the year, the shortfall of supply re demand was 2-3 mil bpd. Speculators took advantage of this to cash in on a bidding war. As you correctly observed, once gas went above $4/gal consumers started to use less, a perfectly natural free market response. That reduction brought the oil market into equilibrium(for you libs, that's where supply=demand). The first shock to high oil prices came when W announced the retraction of the Executive order banning offshore drilling. Shortly after that announcement, prices began their retreat from the stratosphere. The reality is that only a small increase in production will be sufficient to match demand, keeping prices at levels justifiable by production costs(no more speculative premium). BTW, I filled up Tue for $1.569/gal, also for Q1 2008, Exxon-Mobil profit was $10 bil, their income tax bill for the same period was over $11bil, so who really gets the big piece of the pie?

We were drilling
An inconvenient fact is that we were in the midst of a domestic drilling boom up until this election. We had nearly 2,000 rigs working in the US, more than the rest of the world combined. Following the election there has been a rash of rig releases, termination of long term contracts and a significant reduction in the number of working rigs. New build rigs have been put on hold and in general the US oil and gas industry is preparing for a hunker down position. Obama will not change his position on oil and gas development, he believes his current position is right and he won't be persuaded by inconvenient facts.

Our Energy Plan
We have an energy plan. In California, it consists of several pieces. One piece is state legislation that forces electric utilities to purchase at least 30 percent of their power from renewable sources. That means wind, solar, geothermal, and waves (eventually).

Another piece is the Climate Change initiative, aka AB 32. That law requires California to reduce emissions of green house gases to 1990 levels by 2020, then to 80 percent below 1990 levels by 2050.

There is also a vehicle efficiency law, the Pavley standards, that essentially require about 37 miles per gallon for the average fleet. Another piece is aimed at homes and apartments by requiring air conditioners to be upgraded to high-efficiency systems. Yet another piece is for low carbon fuel standard, which means bio-fuels. This piece is now the subject of a lawsuit filed by refining company Tesoro against California’s Air Resource Board.

All of this is current law in California, and Obama has publicly stated he will have a federal law on the same terms, 1990 levels by 2020, and 80 percent below 1990 by 2050. Senator Boxer (D-Cal) is co-authoring legislation for introduction in January 2009.

Roger E. Sowell

On Drilling
The idea of drilling our way out of the energy situation is complicated. First, we have been drilling as fast as available rigs will allow, at least up until the price of oil began its steep drop.

The fact is, there are not enough drilling rigs to quickly drill double or triple the wells in the U.S. Owners of drilling companies have long memories, and well-remember the days of the mid-1980s when drilling rigs sat idle for many months due to oil price’s collapse.

Another aspect is many of our wells in the Gulf of Mexico are vulnerable to hurricanes. Repairing hurricane damage to offshore oil wells and infrastructure is not easy, cheap, nor fast.

The best thing for Americans to do is what we have been doing for most of 2008: drive slower, drive less where possible, and buy hybrids where we can. It will also help when car buyers purchase compressed natural gas vehicles, or CNG.

And, we do have wind farms in the U.S. Companies in Texas and California are building them quickly. They work. Every kilowatt hour generated reduces the need for power from other sources, but not oil. Typically, it is natural gas or coal that is reduced.

Roger E. Sowell

Oil Is Only Part of It
I learned that oil only accounts for 2% of our total energy reserves in ground when combined with coal and NG. That's not very much oil. By drilling, we can rescue our current oil demand but there isn't enough oil reserves to sustain our way of life for a generation unless we are prepared to continue importing it. Our oil reserves stand at 23 billion barrels plus another 10 billion estimate at ANWR and off-shore. And by the way, the U.S. consumes an equivalent of 8 billion barrels of oil energy each year which tells us how oil deficient we really are. I thought we had enough to last us hundreds of years. That's why we will continue to import oil when we run out of it. It's a quick fix, though necessary, to drill now but we need technologies to harness gas/coal fired emissions along with the other alternative energies made available to us by the end of our current generation should we expect to achieve energy independence one day. Nevada where I live is anti-nuclear and coal but this position taken by Senator Reid as national policy will not be able to sustain itself without them. Congress needs a flex-fuel energy plan taking into account all of our resources that sit in our backyard and let's start using them post-haste.

Lighting a Fire Under Politicians
Nothing mentioned in this article will happen unless a high level of discomfort is applied to our elected leaders. Remember the amnesty bill and how fast it disappeared ( expect that abomination to return again ). Any attacks on politicians ( like Waxman ) will not generate anything positive, their policies must be the point of attack. Who will support a person willing to brave the media misinformation campaign?

We have oil, we're not running out
We have more kerogen in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming oil shale than all the oil resources past present and future in the Middle East. We have vast resources in the Bakken formation in Montana and North Dakota, on par with the reserves of Saudi Arabia. We've only explored 5% of the ocean floor, oceans which cover 75% of the earths surface. We aren't running out of oil, in fact we've only begun to use this resource. We've got over 500 years of coal in current reserves.
Resources are known deposits, reserves are resources that can be developed using existing technology in the next 30 years (think about what things were like 30 years ago, and rest assured we will be quite advanced in 30 more), proven reserves are resources that we are producing today. Don't get confused by terminology.
I live in a solar house, the sun doesn't always shine. The wind doesn't always blow. Rely on those things entirely and you better plan on keeping a flashlight next to your bed, it will be dark at some point when the kids cry or you need to make a trip to a little room. Solar cells don't last much more than 25 years before they have to be replaced, wind turbines have their flaws and useful life as well. Oil prices went through the roof when speculators became 70+% of the commodities market and real oil buyers dropped to 30%, the inverse of the oil commodities market 10 years ago.

MIke NY

Yes Mike all that you said is true but its not gonna happen anytime soon.

We don't manufacture because we are not competative. Its really that simple.

Taxes, license fees, energy costs, education, regulations, mandates, lawsuits all play a factor in why we are not competative.

Liberals want high taxes.

Liberals refuse to reduce energy costs.

Liberals demean working jobs so schools focus is on college educations.

Liberals want more regulations not less.

Liberals mandate affirmative action, Family medical leave, workplace safety, so manufacturers just move manufacturing jobs overseas where they don't have such mandates.

Liberals refuse to accept any serious tort reform so lawyers are running rampet in the courts.

Bottom line is dark skin Mexicans don't take their employer into federal court because a light skinned Mexican got promoted to supervisor.

Female South Koreans don't sue their employer because Male South Koreans have a Playboy picture hanging up in the locker room.
