Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

If I were a supporter of Barack Obama I would be nervous. Why? Is it his inexperience, his radical connections, or his stale liberal positions? Nope. I would be nervous because he seems fundamentally incapable of sticking with his principles on a host of issues large and small.

I know his supporters are enthralled with Mr. Hope and Change, but shouldn’t it worry them that he is so quick to backtrack and hedge his answers – or even switch positions entirely – during the course of a relatively short campaign? What will happen should he feel the real pressure of actual leadership (something he has yet to do in any real capacity)?

The most recent example is public financing. When Obama was the underdog fighting against the Clinton machine he promised to work with the GOP nominee and agree to public financing for the general election campaign:

“If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election.”

This past April, however, he began backtracking and seeking a way out of his promise. Clearly, having raised more money than anyone he was suddenly unwilling to keep his word. He offered this laughable excuse:

"We have created a parallel public financing system where the American people decide if they want to support a campaign they can get on the Internet and finance it, and they will have as much access and influence over the course and direction of our campaign that has traditionally been reserved for the wealthy and the powerful.”

Who needs public financing when you can simply redefine your own campaign as a “parallel public financing system”?

And now Obama has made it official: he will be the first candidate since Richard Nixon to not participate in public financing for the general election. In going back on his word Obama, in classic fashion, declares that this is how to declare “independence from a broken system” and “truly change how Washington works." Only in Obama’s world can breaking a promise mean Hope and Change. For a man who puts such stock in the power of words, he abandons his own with remarkable regularity.

In fact, a clear pattern has developed on issues where his rhetoric meets political risk. Obama moves from denial to obfuscation to capitulation. He follows this pattern on his associations and issues.

Remember how he could no more disown Rev. Wright than he could his own grandmother? How the whole issue was a distraction taken out of context? When the pressure continued to mount and questions continued to be asked he soon felt compelled to repudiate Wright’s statements and quit the church he was a member of for 20 years, where he had been married and his children were baptized.

What about the man charged with heading up his VP selection process, Jim Johnson? When the questionable activities of Johnson were first brought up it was “a game” that was being played. But when Johnson’ s sweetheart compensation packages and mismanagement on various corporate boards was set in clear contrast to Obama’s self-righteous rhetoric on the mortgage crisis, Johnson was soon relegated to the ever crowded space under the proverbial bus.

Obama follows the same pattern on issues. When John McCain suggested that Obama should visit Iraq in order to get an up-to-date briefing on the progress their before making promises about withdrawal Obama’s foreign policy advisor labeled the idea “garbage.” And yet Obama recently announced that he was planning to visit Iraq and Afghanistan during the campaign.

Obama’s famous promise to personally meet with unrepentant dictators required a great deal of attempted nuance and clarification – and historical misrepresentation – before he basically admitted that he would not meet directly with America’s enemies without preconditions.

The list goes on and on: from wearing a flag pin to the status of Jerusalem; from lifting the federal supervision on the Teamsters to the threat from Iran; from his family’s role in World War Two liberation to his protectionist rhetoric on NAFTA. Time and time again, Obama says one thing and then does another; makes one promise or statement only to change it based on political expediency.

Obama supporters laud him as a different politician; as someone who can change the way Washington works and bring real solutions to our problems. But how can you trust a candidate who so easily capitulates in the face of criticism and regularly breaks his promises? Is this really change you can believe in?

I can’t believe it, but maybe Hillary was right. Maybe Obama’s campaign is “just words.”

Sen. Obama & the North American Union?
Barack Obama YOU HAVE SAID NOTHING about the N A U (SPP.GOV). You MUST know this “business deal” was done by Pres. Bush with his friend, confidant & past Pres. of Mexico, V. Fox. This quietly done "deal" was ORALLY solidified at the Bush ranch. It was never debated by the legislature or told to American citizens. We now see plans for a Super Highway, where thousands of acres of tax payer property will be confiscated through (the Kelo vs New London Court rule) eminent domain process. PRIVATE PROPERTY IS CENTRAL TO THE FREEDOM AMERICANS ENJOY. The N A U- “NAFTA Super Highway” deal negates this basic, American right to own, retain, safeguard and preserve property owned by families, in many cases, for generations. The NAU, surreptitiously done by President Bush in 2005, with NO debate or vetting by the legislature, completely disenfranchised Americans of any knowledge of or say in the matter. It is the equal of a virtual coup in surrendering U.S. sovereignty to a trilateral entity that, in the form of a N A U, could equal the European Union that dictates to the citizens of 27 European states. Senator, you need to tell Americans your position on preserving U.S. Sovereignty. The N.A.U., if actively denounced in your campaign, could win you the presidency. Your opponents have never talked of this vital issue - - meanwhile the Bush admin. is proceeding as thought this private scheme is a “done deal”. America is watching, listening & waiting to see how you stand on this critical matter. P.S. House Concurrent Resolution 40 states Congressional DISAPPROVAL of the NAFTA Highway & N A U. You are NOT among the 48 COSPONSORS of the bill. Why? Ron Paul introduced H.R. 5191, prohibiting use of federal funds for N A U highway projects. Back this bill & show you support the sovereignty, independence & freedom of America.

Obama's Insincerity Is US's Best Hope
Mr. Obama will want his Presidency to succeed: (1) so he can get re-elected, and (2) so Blacks don't get defamed by a Black man who proved incompetent.

But most of the policies his Party wants are foolishly socially destructive. If he follows them, he will be a one-term failure.

So he won't follow them. His government will likely look remarkably like George Bush's.

It is useful to have an independent Iraq as a buffer between the Shiite nut cases of Iran and the Whahabbi Sunni nut cases of Saudi Arabia. Rather than risk a general Mid-East War that drives gasoline prices to $12 / gallon, Obama will keep our troops there to sustain that Iraqi buffer.

If he taxes the rich, the rich have two places to get the money; (1) they can cut back their lifestyle, or (2) they can cut back their savings / investments. It is easier to reduce the extent to which one invests. But less investment means fewer new jobs and an economy that is less competitive. I.e., less investment will put the economy on the skids. He & his advisors aren't dumb enough to do that.

He and his advisors know enough history that they are unlikely to repeat Smoot-Hawley (and thereby repeat the Great Depression).

National Health Care that triples payroll taxes and delivers Veterans Administration level care (with less access and tighter paperwork) will have the people howling for his head.

Obama's supporters will discover in about a year that now it's their turn to get thrown under the bus.

The other choice is that we repeat the 1930's. Complete with a World War -- for which we will be ill-prepared -- to end the decade

Democrats and religion
Obama and the democrats have shown over and over that religion to them is their party. Anything dealing with God is second to their party as Obama has shown by abandoning his church for poltical expediency.

Is this your best shot?
As an Obama supporter I am amused at the arguments used in this article. If Mr. Collins represents the best that the Republican machine can produce against Obama, Senator Obama has not much to fear. Of the issues raised by Mr. Collin, the flag pin issue has got the be the lamest. If flip flopping on issues is the major criterion for not choosing a President, John McCain is in deep trouble. He has flip flopped so many times since 2000 one would need a book just to summarize them. A major flip flop occurred when he supported a provision in Patriot act which does not require the CIA to report its interrogation methods used against detainees. He voted for this act, which stripped any detainee (including US green card holders) of the right to habeas corpus. His most recent flip flop is on the issue of off-shore drilling. Ok we have an oil crisis at the moment. If McCain was so wise why did he not anticipate the need to drill off-shore years ago. (assuming it would make any difference.) Then we have his recent embrace of the fundamentalist Christian preachers, the same ones he rejected in his 2000 primary campaign against Bush.

I, and several million others, plan to help Obama in his "grassroots" fund raising campaign. We look forward to all the political tricks and attacks. I am not losing any sleep over the words of Mr. Collins.

Barak the master of flip-flop
His ever changing political positions did not surprise me. This Senator had lied and will keep lying for personal gain. Trust him at your own risk and peril or make it Trust him at our country risk and peril.

lineage
Black, as a political and social reality means those descended from West African slaves.
By this definition, Obama is not Black.

Dear Goat --
Don't get too excited.

The GOP smear/slime machine hasn't even warmed up yet. They'll make mince meat of this guy.

Obama 's Victory
Perhaps the only solution to people's stupidity and willingness to ignore the obvious (look at B O's record. There is none.)is for this country to suffer the obvious wounds that a Democrat President & Congress will inflict.
We will undoubtedly be subject to the imposition of Socialist laws (if not Sharia by then)and economic carnage.
Perhaps, after 4 years of a second Jimmy Carter-like malaise we will again wake up and kick the Schumer/Levin/Durbin/Murtha/Pelosi/Reid-related feces from office and begin to restore Conservative principle to our government. Notice that I didn't describe it as Republican. They have disgraced the good name of conservatism.

Hiya Gretchen....
...sorry to get off the thread, but more polar bear insanity soon to come!

Your Most Humble, etc.

George Washington

Stuck in Chicago...
...working this year.

Amazing the idiocy the general population.
These people are talking about Obama as if he were the Second Coming. Older white males are loudly bragging that Obama and their Unions are really going to stick it to those big bad corporations, oblivious to the fact that heavy manufacturing is dead in America, having been killed by those very same unions.

The young people I meet here are clueless. One young lady (twenty-five or so) I spoke with recently here in Chicago fervently explained that she was very, very, conservative in her general political outlook, therefore she was behind Obama 110%.

Pretty scary, really. Our representative democracy depends upon an informed electorate.

God help us all.

Your Most Humble and Obedient Servant,

George Washington

The average American
is so lazy and ignorant they will vote for this big dummy because the MSM has them brainwashed. The average mope has already forgotten 9/11. They deserve whatever it is he has in mind for them. One thing is certain none of his ideas will be good ones. In the long run this might work out for the best. If we can survive the next four years.

Obama #2.
Unfortunately, I live in California which Obama will most likely win, so my vote won't amount for much, but I'm voting anyway.

Obama
Bottom line is this: Obama is a gun grabbing Liberal/Marxist who will never EVER get my vote.

A Different Politician
(You're correct about one thing John from CA)

Obama IS a different politician -- different every week when it is politically necessary.

Unfortunately, the smoothness with which he shifts gears causes people to deny the fact that he's even moving.

I hope Obama DOES "flip-flop"

...on is his suggestion of a Nuremburg-style trial -- followed by life imprisonment-- for Osama bin Laden, which he expounds as "sound victor's judgment."

Incarcerated or dead -- ObL will STILL be a martyr.

ObL is a rabid animal. We don't give rabid animals Nuremburg-style trials followed by incarceration in the dog pound -- WE SHOOT 'EM!

Obamas in the White House???
To the Obama supporter who posted "Get use to the Obama's in the White House" - - -

Socialism is CHANGE, but to believe that it offers HOPE for the American people is pure "AUDICITY."

Yes, Senator Obama, "its just words."

Kyda
You have it right I think.

It's an emotional decision and not a fact or issue-driven one for Obama supporters. That's what makes people who are concerned about the issues so alarmed. It's like they've been drugged. Not a pretty sight. And yes, scary.

john
Mr. McCain has not abandoned positions or flip-flopped for political expediency. You can say it, but it doesn't make it true.
It's also a fairly weak response when all you have in your candidates defense is "the other guy did it too".

It's evident tat Mr. Obama had you guys at "hello" and nothing he does will turn you off. That's fine. He affected me the opposite, and nothing he does now will turn me on.

Obama supporters worried by duplicity??
Are you kidding me? Do you listen to them, read the stuff they write? The man can do no wrong. He plays them like they're the violin and he's the virtuoso. Their insane hatred of Bush, Republicans, the "neo-cons" and everything else that happens to occupy territory right of center has allowed him to turn them into slavering lapdogs. Obama could operate a kiddie porn ring to raise campaign lucre and they'd toss it off while complaining that it was the right wing smear machine playing their filthy politics of personal destruction that forced him to take such desperate measures. It's quite an amazing phenomenon really.

Afraid of Obama? You bet I am. He's a scary guy. As is the cult that's formed around him.

Now the GOP is scared!
Now the GOP realizes that they need to be very afraid of Obama. Turns out he is just as good at rough and tumble politics as the Republicans.

This is the best news all day.

I am thrilled, relieved and delighted by this decision. I was so afraid that Obama would be too polite, nice, too honest, too gentelmanly to go up against the GOP. Thank God he can fight down and dirty with the best of 'em!

This man will make a WONDERFUL President!!!!!

I will send him a check tomorrow.

Like McCain hasn't flip-flopped?
Really. A "flip-flop"? (that's got to be the most overused phrase this side of "Main Stream Media"). So what exactly are McCain's change of positions on tax cuts, energy policy, immigration policy etc.?

Obama IS a "different politician". Every other politician has TAKEN the matching funds. Obama is actually doing something different by NOT taking them.

Sorry, folks, the Republican Brand doesn't have much credibility when suddenly defending campaign finance reform.

Get used to the idea of the Obamas in the White House.

REMEMBER, "WORDS MATTER..."
Wow! What a flip-flop for Obama. I thought he was supposed to be a "different politician", but this sounds like the same "old politics" to me. Remember, Obama was the candidate who said 'words matter'. Well, he can't say 'words matter' when they are helping his campaign and then ask everyone to conveniently forget the ones that make him look bad!!!

Just another Slimy Lawyer and Politician
This dude is as slimy with words as Slick Willie... I too hope the public realizes this guys is oilier than a Saudi.

Abandoning What He Said Was Himself
The Emperor has no Clothes!

Another slimy politician
Geraldine Ferrarro was correct. If this jerk wasn't black he'd be long gone. The Dems have been looking for a clever enough black to champion for a long time, and they seem able to overlook anything to keep the jerk around.

Hope the general public wises up to this fool. But judging from all the swooning at his campaign events, much of the public appear to be idiots as well.
