Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Tuesday night may have been the last time Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton would face off in a debate this primary season. Not only because Hillary’s candidacy is hanging by the fraying thread in Ohio and Texas, but remarkably because she can no longer be confident of winning these contests.

It used to be a given that Hillary, policy wonk and master of detail, would outshine Obama, master of the set speech and crowd pleasing rallies. But in the same way he beat her in fundraising and organization, he eventually proved to be her equal around the debate table. At every turn she sought to expose his weakness, only to have the effort backfire.

At the root of this problem is Hillary’s need for an opponent to demonize in order to define herself. In Arkansas it was teachers’ unions who opposed merit pay and other education reforms. In the White House it was the insurance industry who opposed her efforts to reform health care. She succeeded in getting legislation passed in Arkansas while failing miserably at health care reform, but the pattern can be seen throughout her career. Pick an enemy and attack.

Hillary was always most comfortable battling the infamous Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. When she was fighting Republicans and defending her husband she had the natural support of her party; and many in the country who thought the GOP was over-reaching. She even managed to leverage this into a Senate seat.

In her presidential campaign, this ability to survive was to be her trump card. She proclaimed herself the only one tough enough to win in November. There was only one small problem: she had to win the primary first.

In this scenario who was to play the foil for her attack politics? At first it was George W. Bush. But this only goes so far as she wasn’t running against Bush and he wouldn’t be on the ballot.

At some point she was going to have to articulate a vision of the future. But her entire rationale for running was tied to the past; her money, her name recognition, her popularity were all tied to nostalgia for the economic good times of her husband’s administration. How could she run on “change” when she was the epitome of an establishment candidate?

When push came to shove Hillary’s instincts kicked in and she sought to run against someone rather than on where she would take the country. Her constant touting of her “experience” was in clear contrast to Obama’s inexperience. Her solutions were in contrast to his mere rhetoric.

But once Obama proved to be more than a lightweight good at speeches Hillary was at a loss. Obama had set a trap. He was explicitly running on a new approach to politics and against the old attack style politics with which Hillary was most comfortable. He was seeking to move beyond the very battles she was running on.

She seemed to believe she could knock him out on details and “gotcha” moments. But she attacked in a way that pushed her to the left and weakened her own credibility. Despite his being the most pro-abortion candidate in history she tried to portray him as weak on abortion. This resulted in a shrug from most voters and a backlash from national feminists.

When surrogates raised the issue of Obama’s admitted drug use she looked desperate or unable to control her campaign or both. The same was true when Bill failed to control his temper and harshly attacked Obama.

Recently, Hillary lamely attempted to use accusations of plagiarism to deflate Obama’s rhetoric and got caught up in a distracting debate about his wearing traditional clothes while on a trip to Africa.

When all of these gambits failed she was left complaining about the one opponent she has always hated: the media. This has long been her fall back enemy. When all else fails blame the press. And while there is no shortage of disgust for the media on either the left or the right, this tactic has never been known to win over voters.

What attracts voters are a clear and simple message and a candidate who can credibly embody it. This is the weapon Hillary lacks. “I will work hard” just doesn’t cut it. Hillary keeps tangling herself up in what the first President Bush referred to as the “vision thing.”

Hillary gained the White House the first time thanks in large part to this Bush weakness. Now it looks like someone who excels in this area is going to prevent a return trip.

Hillary is finding out that in politics, as in life, what goes around comes around.

Well, if Obama never says anything then his critics must have been getting messages in fortune cookies because they are sure complaining about his proposals. I suggest that maybe you haven't been listening to Obama. Check out his website too.

As this campaign reaches white-heat, it becomes ever more clear that Obama is a natural leader, while Clinton is a manipulative, rules-ignoring, Machiavellian. And after GWB, we don't need another one of those. Experience? Who was more experienced than Donald Rumsfeld?

The estate of a person of prominence, such as a former state governor, surely has clear legal parameters stating who can give permission for an endorsement, a donation, a contribution, a biography, etc. One of Governor Richard's children took it upon herself to give unilateral permission for the endorsement. Her other children dispute this permission. If the daughter who acted alone did so in violation of the estate's provisions, her sibs may have a legal case against her. Suppose that this one daughter decides all by herself to give away Mama's house? Or permit a biography by an author the other children do not want? This isn't a casual matter. There is a bossy one in every family dealing with a parent's estate.

You want Hillary to show us that she has changed? The problem is that she HAS changed---every day. She has no consistent strategy and as she becomes more frantic her daily switcheroo becomes more frenzied.

Also, her tactics have become more underhanded. She agreed together with the other candidates not to campaign in Florida, the others kept their word, then she ran by herself with no other name on the ballot and now pressures the party to accept what she had agreed they would not accept. This is despicable. Now she is pushing to change Texas voting procedures so that Obama can't succeed in caucus, where he outshines her.

I am a Democrat. Once I supported Hillary; now the sight of her makes me feel sick. I don't want a Machiavellian, rules-defying, law-breaking president again, thank you, ya basta con George Bush.

Hillary's campaign overspent foolishly and extravagantly so that she had to infuse $5 million of her own money; Obama's campaign has easily raised all the money it needs and, by all reports, manages its money efficiently. His campaign has run smoothly with everbody going in the same direction, while Hillary's people seem to keep bumping into each other like characters in a slapstick comedy short. He knows where he's going, while she has changed strategies every day. It's nice that Obama makes inspiring speeches, but what impresses me is that he runs a businesslike operation. Intelligence counts.

As for experience, we've heard that one before. Remember, since Georgw W Bush lacked foreign policy experience, he would be guided by the great experience of his father's administration, and we all breathed a sigh of relief when we heard the names of the players, Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld. So much for experience.

In the recent column by Richard H. Collins he emphasizes how Senator Hillary Clinton’s old and mature political tactic which is: attacking its opponent (In this case Senator Borack Obama) is affecting her campaign immensely, is insignificant. Senator Clinton has been in politics long enough, even before her husband ran the White House in the 90’s, to know the value of the word “CHANGE”, which seems to be the repetitive and continual, never ending word through out this presidential campaign for both senators Obama and Clinton. Regardless, to be successful on November 2008, each candidate must bring change by working within the system, for this is where the action is, and the opportunities for change truly are, and this is exactly where Clinton is. Her robust sense of what a US President should do is amazing, particularly extraordinary. Her fifteen years of experience within the system has transformed her into the best candidate who will epitomize the American justice system and power. The kind of President she would be lies not on the things that she is saying, but perhaps the things she hasn’t said. To retrieve that chance to bring forth that infamous “CHANGE” though, she must first admit that she herself has “changed”, especially in her tactics and ways.

In the article “Hillary’s Go-Round With Obama” written by Richard H. Collins, he informs the reader about how throughout this campaign Hillary’s tactics to defeat Obama are slowly leading to her own defeat in the presidential election. I can agree that experience is an important variable to the electoral process, however it should not limit the candidates ability to successfully lead the campaign. As Collins explains, though Hillary has more political experience, her worn techniques seem increasingly ineffective with the passing of each primary. Collins writes: “But in the same way he beat her in fundraising and organization, he eventually proved to be her equal around the debate table. At every turn she sought to expose his weakness, only to have the effort backfire.” This proves that not only is Obama’s “inexperienced” campaign winning over voters, it is overpowering Clinton’s attempts to progress her campaign by pointing out flaws of her opponents as a pose to focusing on her own strengths. Collins goes on to somewhat mimic Clinton’s whole reason for running for president: “But her entire rationale for running was tied to the past; her money, her name recognition, her popularity were all tied to nostalgia for the economic good times of her husband’s administration”. It is obvious why this could be an “easy target”, however I can not say I agree with this idea overall. It is evident that Clinton has techniques that could potentially better the United States, and is not running on the idea “I’m a Clinton and should be President”. Overall, Collins writes an effective article attacking Clinton’s campaign leading the reader to rethink who they will vote for.

Is it just me or...
...has anyone else noticed that Hillary's Healthcare fiasco in the first two years of her husband's administration were not only unsuccessful, but also illegal?

Unelected officials simply aren't allowed to hold sessions behind locked doors, especially re an issue that would effect 1/7 of our economy (as stated at the time).

Hillary's greatest talent is her ability to screw the pooch (twice), then disappear until the heat dies down, then reappear in her latest re-invention of herself. This latest one, acting like a human being with real emotions (those "tears" don't count as there were no actual tears, just a poorly-acted out version of bravely holding back tears) is simply too new and intimidating for her.

I also believe that Bubba has no interest in seeing Hillary elected prez, his becoming ambassador to the world or not. They are not so much married as incorporated. Why would one CEO want to see another, especially his wife, take his place when this was obviously the biggest thrill of his life?

Do you 'spose that Hillary might just resign her Senate seat if she loses the nomination? She's so tightly-wrapped that she just might explode if ridiculed...and there's plenty of room for such ridicule for the smartest woman in the world who has run such a poorly-conceived campaign.

I don't care a fig for Ms Clinton, but Dick Morris is getting on my nerves. He comes across as vindictive much more than expository. Guess he has no toes to suck.

Hillary is simply not likable...
The candidate Hillary is an unlikable as the former First Lady Hillary was unlikable. Her disapproval ratings (49%) were the highest of any candidate EVER!

As soon as Obama got the Oprah endorsement he instantly became the media darling with the teflon jacket. He will win for the simple fact that the media is swooning over the fact that we could have the first African American president. Of course, if he loses, which he won't, it will be because of racism. His lack of experience will not be an issue for his voters because the media will remind everyone that McCain is STATUS QUO, not to mention a waffling, bumbling, Puerto Rican born, lobbyist loving boob. After all, CHANGE and HOPE is what WE ALL WANT. Yip! Yip! Yahoo! and a whoop-dee-doo!

Couple that sales pitch with Obama's promise to steal money from the rich and give it to the envious, covetous, gluttonous, lustful masses who just don't have enough and you have a winner. Consequences? Who cares. We want, want, want. Gimme, gimme, gimme! Raise taxes, open the borders, save-the-planet, love the terrorists and everyone gets their salvation!
Ignorance is bliss...Bring on the depression!
Blame it on Bush, as if that will make it any better. Dance a jig!

Hillary who?
If Obama ever occupys the Oval Office, the bad guys are going to eat him alive, and it won't be pretty. I can't stop laughing at the melt-down of this vapid, over-infaled, emptysuit that is Hillary Rodam Clinton. Barrack seems like a nice guy, but he talks forever and says nothing. Hillary is a fraud. In every sense of the word. She has all the substance of a fog. When she loses I hope all her stupid supporters repair to their beds and cry for a month. I am sooooooo pleased.

Petty, vindictive, venal, self-serving -
and those are just some of Sen Clintons "good" qualities.

The woman is simply flat out unlikable. B. Hussein Obama seems like a pretty nice guy, even though he's a rabid liberal, which shows his lack of maturity and wisdom.

Liberals don't always grow up eventually like most of us do and shed their childish delusions, and they certainly don't make good presidents.

John McCain zips me off every time he opens his yap, but he's at least a man- not a Marxist boy (not meant as a racist slight) or a desperate, corrupt Stalinist woman.

Dead woman un-endorses Hillary

Richards’ sons object to Clinton video

SPI-The two sons of Ann Richards, the late former Texas governor, are objecting to an Internet video published by Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign that suggests their mother would have supported Clinton.

Clinton’s campaign had permission from Richards’ youngest daughter, Ellen, who said in a statement provided by the campaign that her mother was an “ardent feminist” who would be thrilled by her friend Hillary Clinton’s candidacy.

“I believe that if my mom were alive today that she would be stumping across Texas and around the country supporting Hillary for president,” her statement said.

Hillary should have muzzled willy
Like months ago!!

Not so slick Willy started her slow downward spiral from an invincible front runner and presumptive nominee and President of the United States to a runner up to Hussen Obama-the lying half white black man. How's *that* for an oxymoron?

Slick willie has now sabotaged two front runners:Hillary and Al Gore.

They need to do something with that Rhodes Scholar and (subconscious?) saboteur.

Uncle Max , Obama's record offers
enough information to demonize him, but Hillary did not do it because she feared a backlash from the black voters. She realizes that the blacks are voting for Obama anyway and so she should have gone on the attack and maybe won more women and whitemen. Obama's rheteric is more fictional than factual - she should have demonized his lack of experience by making factual statements about how little he has accomplished in the IL senate (all the present votes) and even less in the US senate. The fairytale statement was correct but Hillary not Bill should have made it and when called on it, she should have used that opportunity to remind americans that Obama is not only inexperienced his rheteric does not hold true to his record i.e. transparency in govt. does not match his refusal to release his earmarks for 12005 and 2006. Saying he will bring 150+ troops and equipment back home in 6 months is logistically impossible etc.

Hillary's Next Steps 2
Also, Hillary made Bill do all the attacking and Obama started whining about "I feel like I am running against both people". Taking the victim status made voters see Hillary and Bill as bullies and Obama as the underdog who needed their support. Hillary should have reminded voters that his wife had attacked her at a personal level when she said "how can a woman who can't run her home run the country?". Hillary should have struck back saying Obama's spouse was using personal attacks to help her husbands candidacy. Finally, Obama made more media rounds (the Oprah effect helped) but Hillary should have over communicated and expressed the fact that obama LACKED DEMONSTRATED CHANGE IN HIS CAREER AT A NATIONAL LEVEL so his platform of change was questionable???? All the while Hillary should have reminded voters that judgement is based on experience and that when a person picks a doctor or pilot etc they look for experience in that field medicine and flying in this case and not the doctor's "life experience". Hillary can still call attention to Obama's inexperience by saying "I respect my colligues work with inner city and the challenges he faced being raised by a single parent. However, when it comes to picking a president life's experiences are not enough to EFFECT THE CHANGE NEEDED TO MOVE THIS COUNTRY IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. A president needs to have (then list her experience). She taunted her experience without questioning Obama's judgment and lack of experience. In order to win, she needed to do both. McCain will make this campaign about ideas, policies, demonstrated change, and who is most qualified to lead this country. He will avoid the politics of identity and personality by reminding voters about Obama's inexperience and record. Americans can understand that picking a president requires experience beyond "being raised by a single parent and working in the inner city of chicago".

Hillary's Next Steps
What Hillary should have done is reminded voters that Obama's so called judgement was presumptious because he did not have ALL THE NECESSARY INFORMATION to make ANY JUDGEMENT about Iraq!

Hillary should have attacked
Obama's false premise i.e. He had sound judgement about Iraq - huh? The guy was not in the senate and there is no official record of where he stood on the war. But Hillary allowed that good judgement myth to be repeated by Oprah first and others second without her questioning it. This framed Obama as the candidate with good judgement and Hillary as the candidae with more experience. Obama then decided to ask voters to trust good judgement more than experience because experience without judgement is not important.

Who's attacking Obama?
As I watch the Democratic Primary draw toward its conclusion, I notice that the Democratic Party is employing an interesting tactic. While the Clintons try to attack Barack Obama for this or that, there seems to be an effort to make the Republicans look like the bad guys. Have you heard this before? "Boy, if Obama gets the nomination, the Republican attack machine is going to smear him all day long over; his drug use, his (Muslim) religion, Louis Farrakhan, plagiarism, Tony Rezko, those pictures in African robes, etc." There is just one problem: Currently, Obama is not running (yet) against the Republicans. He is still locked in a fierce battle with Hillary Clinton, whose campaign is behind most of the anti-Obama disclosures.....

What "experience"?
7 years in the Senate? She NEVER held an elective office before that. She NEVER ran a business, a city, a state, so as far as I'm concerned, she DOESN'T HAVE ANY EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE. Her 8 years in the White House, managing the press and "bimbos"? Is THAT part of her "experience"? If state and White House First Lady experience counts, then I guess Laura Bush would count as an "experienced" candidate too. Not that I'm an Obama fan, but he had his 3 years now in the Senate, AND he was in the Illinois State Senate too, so one could argue that he has MORE ELECTED OFFICE EXPERIENCE THAN HILLARY. Although, he has NO EXECUTIVE EXPERIENCE either. Help me, Lord.

Mom in Wisconsin

But Obama has no experience
Hillary said her record speaks for itself. Americans had a good chance to see how Hillary could handle herself in the outside world, and Hillary along with her circle thought Obama was going to be a push over because of his lack of experience. He's all talk and no action, Hillary would say time and time again. Obama's abandoning his core Democrat principles. How? Because he doesn't do the liberal speak of doom and gloom, but of hope and change. Or joined with Hillary when she spoke of her Universal Health Care. On a daily bases we were reminded of lack of experience. Hillary knows the issues and she's an experience politician. Well, the world outside of the world Hillary lives in, is very experienced, and Obama with a lack of experience cleaned her clock. How would Hillary, if elected President handle herself against the experience leaders of other countries if she can't beat Obama who lacks experience?

my 2 cents
Good piece - To me the defining statement is "At the root of this problem is Hillary's need for an opponent to demonize in order to define herself."
