Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

At last night’s Democratic debate Hillary Clinton’s electoral steamroller finally hit a speed bump. With a growing lead in most polls, a powerful fundraising operation, and a developing air of inevitability her opponents were forced to go on the offensive.

And, aided by moderators Brian Williams and Tim Russert, they did just that, criticizing her on everything from Iran to social security and even a plan to give illegal immigrants driver’s licenses. As a result Hillary was on the defensive the whole night and sounded scornful and even angry at times.

But what stood out, was Hillary’s inability to give a straight answer. Her habit of seeking to have it both ways came to the fore and just may have given her opponents the opening they have been seeking in this campaign. If Hillary begins to stumble we may look back on this debate as a turning point.

Hillary had already developed a reputation as a cagey politician who often refused to commit to policy specifics. And she has faced criticism about many of these issues in previous debates. But in the past she was able to deflect these attacks with stronger answers and a sense of humor.

Last night, however, she could not assume that laid back persona. It appeared that the criticism was getting to her. From the start her voice seemed to rise up a notch and take on a harder edge.

As the debate played out a pattern developed. Hillary would be challenged on an issue and she would seek to defuse those criticisms often by ratcheting up her attacks on President Bush and Republicans. Obama and Edwards, however, frequently pointed out that Hillary was trying to have it both ways and that it was time to have a President who was honest with the American people. On a number of issues Hillary refused to be pinned down or give a straight answer.

On Social Security she continued to cling to her mantra of “fiscal responsibility.” She seemed testy and uncomfortable when questioned about why she had refused to put any reform options on the table yet seemed to consider raising the payroll tax in conversation with an Iowa voter.

Instead of taking a stand, she claimed that the whole issue was a “Republican trap.” But Tim Russert noted that her husband had spoken of a “looming fiscal crisis” in social security in 1998. Obama jumped in to assert that the issue was demographics not fiscal responsibility and that everyone on stage was opposed to privatization. Fixing problems required honesty not a fear of GOP talking points.

When Russert brought up Congressman Charlie Rangel’s reform of the Alternative Minimum Tax Hillary once again attempted to straddle. She praised Rangel for his efforts but refused to take a clear position on the specifics. As part of a rambling and confusing answer she claimed that Republicans didn’t care about the middle class and that the issue was complicated because there were “a lot of moving pieces.”

But the issue that really tripped up Hillary and ended the debate on a disastrous note for her was New York Governor Elliot Spitzer’s plan to give illegal immigrants driver’s licenses. Tim Russert again used Hillary’s own words to challenge her by pointing out that she had told an editorial board that the proposal made “a lot of sense.”

Hillary quickly blamed the problem on President Bush’s failure to achieve comprehensive immigration reform but seemed supportive of the proposal. Only Senator Dodd spoke up in opposition. But no sooner had Dodd spoken than Hillary jumped in to claim that she didn’t support the proposal but she understood why Spitzer had brought it forward.

When challenged on this confusing claim, Hillary unsuccessfully tried to backtrack and clarify her position. Instead of offering a clear yes or no she complained that people were trying to play “gotcha.” This allowed Edwards to get in one of the zingers of the night: “Unless I missed something, Senator Clinton said two different things in the course of about two minutes.”

Edwards’s quip seemed to capture the entire debate. On the night before Halloween, Hillary’s mask fell off. When challenged she responded with scorn and evasion instead of honest and straightforward answers. She has given voters a glimpse of her less polished side and her opponents an opening to change the nature of the race.

Let’s hope that voters were watching and that her opponents don’t let up.

Pay Attention--
For weeks I have contended Hillary is insane. That is not meant as a flippant remark--I am dead serious. Now others are starting to take note--her cackle, her bulging eyes, her strange expressions ,and her contradictions and convoluted political statements are recognized as problems. The MSM ,who created the mantra, "the smartest woman in the world" are now unable to cover for her insanity. The MSM are still trying by dragging Bill Clinton in to help smooth out her rantings and the MSM writes all it can to cover her, but it won't help. The cackle, the cackle, the cackle without cause--the uncontrolled display of bitterness and the incessant blaming of others for her faults are all 3 great tell the tale signs--she has now lost control. "The Smartest Woman In The World" is now "The Craziest Woman In The World".

Hillary Unmasked
I have thought for awhile that she is just as self-glorified as her husband, only she is much worse when it comes to fanaticism of ideals. She is a socialist who will dis-member our republic if elected. She treats people with utter disdain and contempt for anyone who disagrees with her. I sure hope enough people will realize the danger she is to this country.

Sue
Agree -- she is absolutely one of the biggest dangers facing this country today and she must be defeated. "Unmasked" is a great word. Just like the wicked witch in the Wizard of Oz, Hillary's mask definitely started to melt last night in the debate and many people got their first, highly unattractive good look at her.

I have seen the light
In a blinding revelation, I now give you the answer to the debate.

Nobody cares if Hillary doesn't answer questions. Lesser men than her have been elected dodging issues.

It all boils down to this: Hillary is an ugly nag. Romney is a dashing rogue. Cackle versus swagger. It is in the bag if the Republicans can quit overthinking the solution. Kick Rudy back across the street and let the dems "get ugly early." Romney wins in a landslide.

Too mild a word!
Arby:

Danger is too mild a word!

Intellectually Vacant
Hillary was exposed as a double talking huckster, who has experience giving strong opinions, not strong decisions. There is a big difference between opinions and decisions. I feel so good for General Petraus.

Nick, I agree that Romney is "dashing"
and can win against Hillary.

But he is no "rogue." Romney is more like a "knight in shining armor" who can deliver us from the curses which the "nag" or witch named Hillary would bring upon our nation and its people.

IMO, Hillary fears Mitt Romney (and his beautiful wife and five handsome sons) as an opponent more than any other Republican candidate.

Hiilary
Hillary stands for socialism. She will attempt to hide with double talk. But it pervades her softball interviews. for example:

"I think it's time to send a clear message to what has become the most profitable sector in (the) entire economy that they are being watched." 9/2/2005

"(We) ...can't just let business as usual go on, and that means something has to be taken away from some people 6/4/2007

"We have to build a political consensus and that requires people to give up a little bit of their own ... In order to create this common ground." 6/4/2007

Need I go any further?

I sincerely mean this
without any intent toward vitriol, sarcasm, or political prejudice. Disregarding all other candidates and the fact that Bill would be a tow-along, what in the world would cause a grownup of voter age to vote for Hillary other than the fact that she belongs to the democrat party?

it's all too convenient
the only way Bill Clinton came into the Whitehouse was because the opposition was divided and many "Republicans" and "Reagan Democrats" went into the polling booths of America and selected Ross Perot and the "Reform Party", AND NOW, Hillary is up at bat and once again the opposition is dividing or BEING DIVIDED, all too conveniently in my opinion.

For all of you "third party" enthusiasts, and similar narrow issues voters of center/right America, "Where is the Reform Party now?", and what meaningful difference did your 1992 votes make, other than to bring a sexual degenerate into the highest office of the land who piddled and diddled while Osama and company refined their abilities?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

warrior
the libs continually attack dick morris as though he attracks the clinton's out of a sense of vengence. But morris has noted that the missus clinton in not nimble on her feet and when forced from her prepared script she quickly resorts to her old form of shifting blame. That she mentioned the president some 25 times shows she lacks any comprehension of any any plan. But that is the key to unmasking this fraud. Keep her defensive and like thew witch in the land of oz she will melt in front of our eyes

An alternative to Billary ...

Hillary a Doe in Headlights!
__Looking for browse, she scents, on the other side of the road, she is caught in the headlights. This doe had been secure browsing with her family on both sides the road. Filling their bellies, while thinning the browse, these high browse jack rabbits, now fight for scraps. Looks like the bucks let the doe take the lead for their own protection. She got caught in the middle of the road, and smack, her animal instinct caused injury. This doe found out the dangers of her basic instinct, following her nose to find the most generous feed enabling her to fatten up quickly. It's a beautiful sight to watch animals interract with nature, and how they instinctively follow their nose to fulfill their desires, needs. I've often wondered, how much more efficient, and productive, they were not of that singular, pack (PAC), mentality.

strength of democracy
It is a great strength of our democracy that we can quiz political candiddates so vigorously. Under the pressure some fade and some blow apart.

One imagines that the Venezualian people might have wished for as rigorous an examination of their leadership candidates. In the good old USA, tyrants are flushed out and discarded.

Bye Hillary.

Not a chance
It doesn't matter how badly she blew it, the MSM will gloss this over within a month and it will be gone and forgotten. By them.

nanuq
the msm is fickle. They hailed dean as their next champion and turned on him when his blow-up in iowa occurred. Getting the missus clinton offscript brings out the shreiking voice and the looney statements. Some of those in the media smelling blood will likewise turn on her but the flipflops will start to annoy the far left and she must view that as more problematic as they are far more vocal in their critisism towards her

More on the character....
...of the Clintons. I'd like to see any posters who would defend the list from the website noted below.

Charlie
You are dead-on correct about Hillary.

Just to add a little gasoline to the fire, she was just endorsed by (drumroll please) the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union.

What more do you have to know?

Barry

barry
exactly what does getting the endorsement of a group that was already going to endorse you mean anyhow. The dims are owned by the lawyers, the various unions especially the teachers and various minorities. All claim to be independent but always give their dollars and votes to further their special interests standing. The dims cite this as news when all it is, is no more than maintaining their status quo

Does She Think Bush Is Running Again?
I know that dislike of Bush is a strong motivator to Democratic voters, but someone should tell Hillary he can't run again. Who will she blame when he's gone? What would she do to address the "problems" she identifies? You certainly don't know from her public performances. But Bush sure is a bad guy and must be stopped.

Warrior
I couldn't agree more. The woman is certifiable. Besides that, name one thing she's successfully accomplished that would qualify her to run this country? Can anyone truthfully say she would be anything but a hack lawyer for the ACLU were she not married to ol' weak zippered Willie?

Hillary Unmasked
About two weeks ago Rudy Giuliani was on Hannity & Colms. Hillary Clinton's stands on particular issues were discussed, and it became apparent to me that in a face-to-face meeting, which would certainly take place in a presidential race, Giuliani would make mincemeat of her. This, among other things, is why this conservative is for Rudy.

Bob Sillars

Patrick
Thanks! That was great!

Wittle Hillary
Why are all you mean posters ganging up on poor wittle Hillary? Shucks, count me in, too. This vicious, half-crazed woman is a real threat to our nation. I just hope Russert keeps hounding her, he's doing yeoman's work. She showed Tuesday how Bush-league she really is, repeatedly attacking the president for every problem under the sun, but that's what libs do best -- when in doubt trash your opponent. Le'Chaim.

Free Ramos and Compean

Dont sell Hillary short
She is the most dangerous person in this country, but do not under estimate the Clinton machine. THey have a lot of $$$$$ behind them. She has the laugh of the wicked witch of the west, a large bag full of past baggage bones, no experience in running anything or making a payroll. She is a socialist, a military hater, an abortion fan,a gun control supporter, a tax and spend hair brain, with nothing much under the hood, and no new ideas. But she and the machine have power. Think about her as president, Peolsi and Reid running congress, and the 2 high court judges like Ginsburg she may place on the bench. Our entire way of life is in serious danager unless we come together on a Republican who can beat her. I wish her well as senator of N.Y. and I pray she stays there, they deserve her.

ron
some on the far left are starting to question her electibility. They can see through the fog she is trying to create when she refuses to answer questions and thinks triangulating will work. When she can't answer a simple yes or no question how is she going to prove she is any type of leader when a conflict arises. She has been campaigning for 15 years and still can't get a majority of persons in this country to like her. SAhe clings to the fantasy we really don't know her but more to the point we know too much and more importantly we know she is incapable of leading this great nation. The promise of returning kthe arkansas lowlife, bubba to new prominance won't generate the support she needs as the country has had enough of that loser too.

It's About Time
Where have Americans been when she was so divisive and power-hungry when Bill was president. She was the mastermind behind most of the Clinton scandals. As a Democrat and a feminist, she will certainly not get my vote. Hillary is devious and her "agreement" with Bill that first he'll be president, and then she'll be president is an insult to the American electorate. Haven't we had enough with family political dynasties in the White House? Will Chelsea be next to declare her political intentions to keep the corrupt Clinton legacy going? Hillary is simply not qualified politically and morally to be our next president. She does not want her role as Bill's closest presidential political advisor to be exposed because it would destroy her candidacy as her lies and deception would show her true character. She is nothing but a Bush clone!

Chopper John
I couldn't agree more with your early morning comment. I have wondered, in all seriousness, why in heaven's name anyone would willingly vote for Hillary. I think she offers nothing. She has accomplished nothing. Her record of experience is mostly a matter of being married to Bill when he was gov and prez. She is a mere 2nd term senator who, as far as I can see, has done nothing for New York. Aside from the fact that she scares me, I honestly don't know what anyone sees in her as a candidate.

I think her ruthless, bared-teeth ambition, nearly seeping from her mouth, is one of the most terrifying sights I have seen. She will be a tyrant in office -- to say nothing of a tax guzzler. I think she must be defeated at all cost.

I'm one of the many conservatives
who have already seen Hillary for what she is, a fascist or socialist dictator in the making.

Democrats support her for two reasons; they liked Bill and think they will get another Bill if they elect her, or they will vote for her because she is a woman.

I've been wondering how long it would take for other Democrat candidates to challenge her on this way. Thus far she has been given an easy time and when some sounded as if they might be challenging her they would back peddle (Obama is one example).

I'm sure there was some behind the scenes issue(s) which led to the lack of a challenge by other Democrat candidates. Maybe it was a deal to pick one of them as VP if she won, or just simple fear of the Clinton smear machine bringing out their own dirty laundry.

Something must have happened behind the scenes to change how things were playing out. She must have either shown herself to be playing the others for fools (by making the same promise to every one of them) or she failed to live up to her end of some bargain, or who knows what.

I'm not one to believe this is all some grand plan to position her in the same way Bill was positioned in his first run for PotUS, thinking that they can repeat that scenario, but they are Democrats and are capable of almost anything to achieve their goals, including making themselves look bad now so they can look better in the general election.

I'm just glad to see her falling on her face. Fake or not, planned or not, I'll take it for simple entertainment value alone.

Jezebel
Jezebel must be stopped.

Imperial Glare
I couldn't help laughing when I observed,as "The Cackler" was being brought to task during the so-called debate.

How many of you noticed that whenever one of the other candidates dared to speak out against her, what did she do?

She GLARED at each one of then; she physically turned towards each of them as they spoke, as if to try to intimidate them with the haughty Imperial Glare.

She is, don't you realize, the annointed one! She is the new moother eve (no caps.) who will make sure we all have what we need, and that she gets the credit.

Our blessings will no longer come from God. We can thank the "cackler" from who all blessings shall flow.

I'm not a "dem", but except for KOOKY Kusinich, I pray that she will not be nominated. Actually, he would be preferable if we had no other choice.

If she is nominated, heaven help us if we also get a democratic controlled congress.
