Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Famed detective Sherlock Holmes once solved a case based on the fact that a dog didn’t bark. In our time, nuclear weapons are the equivalent of that silent pooch.

At a recent speech in Prague, President Barack Obama declared that, “As the only nuclear power to have used a nuclear weapon, the United States has a moral responsibility to act,” to eliminate nuclear weapons. “We cannot succeed in this endeavor alone, but we can lead it,” he added.

But this view ignores decades of military history, and fails to give the U.S. the credit it deserves.

Never before in history had a country or group developed an overwhelming weapon -- then declined to use it. When British forces met lesser-armed dervish fighters at the battle of Omdurman in 1898, for example, they unapologetically used machine guns to mow down 10,000 attackers while losing fewer than 50. “Whatever happens, we have got/The Maxim gun, and they have not,” observed Hilaire Belloc.

Later, World War I brought great leaps in weapons technology. And no matter how awful weapons such as poison gas were, both sides eagerly deployed them as soon as possible.

Sometimes even too quickly. The British invented tanks, but by rolling them out piecemeal instead of in massed formations, they often wasted their technological advantage. Decades later it was the Germans who conquered a continent with effective tank warfare.

But against that backdrop, consider “the bomb.”

Americans, knowing they were in a race for the future of humanity, scrambled to split the atom and unleash its overwhelming power during World War II. Pre-war Germany had led the world in nuclear physics. But by running off his country’s Jewish scientists Hitler had, luckily, squandered that advantage. Shortly after Germany surrendered in 1945, the U.S. developed atomic weapons.

In August, the U.S. military used nuclear bombs to destroy Hiroshima and Nagasaki, causing Japan to surrender. The death toll was unprecedented. Some 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki were killed almost immediately by just two bombs. Still, these numbers pale next to the number of fatalities an all-out invasion could have caused.

A study produced by the Secretary of War estimated that between 1.7 and 4 million Americans could have been casualties, including 400,000 to 800,000 killed. Meanwhile some 5 to 10 million Japanese -- many if not most of them civilians -- could have been killed.

And this is the point President Obama apparently misses: Having developed nuclear weapons and used them to end the greatest military conflict in history, the United States never used them again. Talk about showing moral leadership.

We almost take it for granted today that, as military theorist Thomas P.M. Barnett has observed, no country with nuclear weapons is going to be allowed use them. That’s why South Africa gave up its nuclear program, and why advanced nations such as Japan don’t bother having atomic weapons. If there’s a dispute over the Chunnel, for example, France isn’t going to nuke London.

But for decades, humans assumed that nuclear war was inevitable. In 1962 novelist Arthur Hailey, himself a British pilot in W.W. II, wrote “In High Places,” a book that featured a world where Canada and the U.S. had to merge their sovereignty to survive an impending Soviet nuclear attack.

The reason no other nation ever used atomic weapons is because the U.S. voluntarily put its on the shelf, even though that cost American lives. Tens of thousands of Americans were killed in Korea, yet the U.S. didn’t use nuclear bombs to stop invading Chinese troops. Vietnam dragged on for years, yet the U.S. never considered dropping nuclear weapons on Hanoi. The Soviets could have used nukes in Afghanistan, but didn’t. That’s probably because the U.S. hadn’t used them in its limited wars.

Of course, after 60-some years, the picture is changing. In the years ahead it won’t be merely stable nation-states that will have nuclear weapons. Unstable -- possibly suicidal -- regimes in Iran and North Korea likely will have them as well.

The U.S. has shown great leadership in this area as well, of course. Washington has attempted to work with international organizations to slow the proliferation of nuclear arms. And the U.S. has designed and built the first effective missile-defense systems, technology it’s eager to share with allies so they’ll be able to protect themselves from a nuclear North Korea or Iran.

Nuclear weapons haven’t barked because American leadership kept them muzzled. That’s the sort of “leadership” we’ve exhibited for decades, and will continue to feature in the years ahead, whether we get credit for it or not.

Historical Idiocy
What a remarkably dishonest article. Tucker begins with a flat-out lie: "Never before in history had a country or group developed an overwhelming weapon -- then declined to use it." Thus he opens by ignoring the fact that not only did we use it, twice, but we are the only country in history to have used it.

Later he admits we used it on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people. To justify these crimes, Tucker trots out the tired and dishonest defense that this was somehow better than an invasion, blockade, or diplomatic resolution. Hogwash.

Tucker completely ignores the fact that we never used nukes throughout the cold war because our arsenal was (nearly) matched by the Soviet Union's (remember mutually-assured destruction?).

He also completely ignores our role in the proliferation of nuclear weapons (where exactly did Israel get theirs?) , our abrogation of important treaties (the ABM treaty), the destabilizing tendencies of our ineffective and unworkable anti-missile "shields"), and so on.

Tucker also ignores the increased research under Bush in the design of lower-yield "bunker-buster" nukes, presumably to be used against Iran's phantom nuclear bomb industry.

Tucker also ignores the likelihood that we would obliterate Iran or North Korea if they launched a missile at us (or Israel). Does he really think these countries are that stupid? Why does he think they would be "suicidal"?

The article is nonsense. The simple fact that our country has an enormous stockpile of unnecessary weapons designed for massive overkill speaks for itself. Obama is exactly right in wanting to rid the world of these, the most vicious of all WMD. Unfortunately, he is going about it much too slowly.

BAN THE BOMB AND PREPARE FOR WORLD WAR
If we abolish the bomb the world will return to the pre-nuclear age of world wars and massive death. As Dr. Barnett said: "The bomb has made great power wars a thing of the past" and Obama wants to rid the world of them. Let's face it my friends we've replaced a sh*t kicking cowboy with a dumb brainless arse whose mentally stuck in the counter culture youth movement of the late 1960s.

The Douglas diatribes explained:
The Dr. Douglas PSA
Once again, I observe several TH posters have responded to Dr. Douglas. Thus, it's time once again for The Dr. Douglas Public Service Announcement:

Dr. Douglas once posted that his own university, Oregon State, was too poor to hire teaching assistants. In fact, as I learned in 5 minutes on the OSU website, OSU does indeed hire TAs. They also recognize and negotiate with the TAs collective bargaining unit. And OSU has a special award to recognize excellence among TAs.

I just want to remind everyone who's done Dr. D the courtesy of responding to him that the man is either a hopeless ignoramus, a pathological liar, an utter fool, or some combination of all 3.

The preceding was a public service announcement courtesy of Doc Liberty. As always, we thank you for your support.

Obama either cannot or
will not grasp that having nuclear weapons is the best means of ensuring we won't use them. It could not have been easy for Truman to give that ultimate of orders.

I have but dim memories of the Cold War scares of the 60's but the possibility of Iran and N. Korea having nuclear weapons capability is nervous-making on a level that far exceeds that of Soviet Russia's ever possessing the things.

LAPDOGS DON'T BARK
But Pitbulls DO, and without obedience training, they are apt to KILL.
I agree our Nation should not Bark, but for doggone sure it ought to 'GROWL' loud and not roll over or APOLOGIZE for anything.

You can judge...
...the quality of an authur's column by the response he gets from Douglas.

High marks for Mr Tucker!

"Dr. Douglas"
You'd best remember that old saying.

"Tis best to remain quiet and be thought a fool than speak out and remove all doubt".

AliveinHim...
On the contrary,Truman has stated that it was the easiest decision he ever made.He was looking at 300,000 additional American casualties (killed and wounded) if he didn't use it.When we first got the news of Hiroshima, there was partying in the streets. This was the best news we had during the War.It was only later that the left wing in this country,(they were born after the war), turned against nukes and re-wrote history. The Japanese would have fought to the last child without the Bomb!

Dr Douglas would ban fire too

Since many civilians were killed in Tokyo and in Dresden during WWII, I must assume that he would also ban fire because of the massive number of casualties.

I know, I know Anderson, but this!
Dr. Doofass' quote of the day: Tucker also ignores the likelihood that we would obliterate Iran or North Korea if they launched a missile at us (or Israel). Does he really think these countries are that stupid? Why does he think they would be "suicidal"?

This is too stupid a statement to ignore. The real thing that should be said is "Does anybody believe that his lordship supremeness du teleprompter will find Michelle's key to the lockbox where his gonads are, unlock the box and use them?" The world sees like the rest of us, he will not stand up and defend us, our allies, or anyone else who hasn't grown up on welfare, or at least have Ali or Hussein in his name.

The only thing the great al dente' will do is whip out the old Uncle Sam Visa card and try to ease their misery with a little of my money. He will just default to his Ali Bama and the 40 theives personna, just as he is now, in dealing with the Somali pirates. He will sit back behind the bulletproof glass, in his armor plated desk chair, and send Hillary the shrill, and tax cheat Timmy et al, out to bend over and ask for another. Do you really think they are scared of him?

At least Bill Clinton could get his nads off the bumper of Hillary's Mercedes long enough to use them, at least while an intern was around, and the world knew that too. Reagan, Bush 1, and Bush 2 wore theirs all day and all night. Deterrence worked for them because the world knew they'd use them. Not Husinsane though!

DR.DOUGLAS?
DOCTOR OF WHAT?
Stupidity?
Ignorance?
He reminds me of some of the mindless robots as Hal,Taft,Jeffery,Ranger 29.
Oh well Its free speech.

nuclear weapons kill people
the people who push the buttons to launch them are the people responsible, however. By the same logic, guns DO kill--BUT the people pulling the triggers are the ones who MUST be gotten under control.
NObody ever won a war by actually fighting long battles. A sudden, catastrophic show of great STRENGTH is what wins wars. Bullies are NOT courageous; neither are button pushers. STRENGTH in the face of challenge will cause nearly ALL bullies to back down. The next time Korea launches a missle--blow it up (on live TV); then warn them that the NEXT one will cause a retaliation to their mainland. If they persist--do it. Japan has been remarkably quiet for a great number of years--ever wonder why?
We are messing with potential great destruction here--we cannot afford to allow BO the time to "learn" how to be a real President!

Obama in Fantasy land
Obama lives in a Bubble or better known as a Liberal Utopian Fantasy land. Think back to the 1970's Coca Cola commercial that ran, the Multi-cultural touchy feely one, where all these young People were on a Hill top singing "I'd like to see the world in total harmony" or something like that. That is the make believe world that Obama resides in.

Dr Douglas
. . . may know everything about the fruit fly or Byzantine architecture, if indeed he has a doctorate. I guarantee he knows nothing about history.

Just for fun, Dr. D-- What would you have done, given the historical realities (not what you wish was true) when there was a clear choice between dropping the bomb or invading Japan? If you have no sensible answer for this (my guess is no answer) then you have exactly zero credibility on the question.

P.S. Just waiting for Japan to come to their senses isn't an answer. When the Emperor announced the end of the war, most Japanese who heard the news thought they had won.

Killer
HOw about leaving out the whining emotional drama and let loose a few facts and arguments? Is that so hard for you. The author is not comparing machine guns to bombs but is showing the parallel there. Also, before calling posters with far superior intellects than your own, you might want to try formulating a complete thought.

Interesting, Killer
Interesting "use" of "parenthesis" in your post. Do you have any "idea" of proper "punctuation" at all, or haven't they "gotten" to that yet in your "elementary" school?

Jesse
Don't worry too much about killer. The advanced concepts of metaphor and analogy are beyond his(?) ability to grasp. Logic or symolism? Fuggettaboudit!

be patient
Won't be long before nukes start destroying American cities. But,as liberals die, they can-as they head for hell-claim the high moral ground.

Jesse/Robert
Please be advised that I write for me. If you find it difficult to understand what I write. Don't read it "Dumb As"... I stand by my statements!!!

A Two Part Problem
It is a two part problem, not a one part problem. You can reduce your nuclear arsenal, "if" you can defend yourself against anyone who wants to use a nuclear bomb. But that is not what the President appears to want to do. He wants to reduce our nuclear capability and at the same time, cutback on the Strategic Defense Initiative.

A Modest Proposal
If Iran gets the atom bomb and uses it on us or any of our allies, all persons who were opposed to military force to stop them are immediately drafted for front line service. You broke it, you own it.

Very Good Article
The piece written by Mr. Tucker is a very good one and should be disseminated far and wide. It is particularly important that it be read in the White HOuse, where they seem to be quite bereft of any clues and this article might spark an important chain of "new concepts".

Robert
That is not a bad idea, except that most military folks would not want to serve with them.

Dr. Douglas needs to read some history from the time of Harry Truman. It was estimated that the total force loss from an invasion of Japan would be in the "Hundreds of thousands." There was also an estimate that the USA would lose one million. That was reported in an old Time magazine I found in a flea market -- don't recall the exact date and don't want to dig it out, but it was printed in 1944. That estimate was from General Marshall and Admiral King, best I recall.

Dr. Douglas is the type who would rather suffer US military casualities than have the enemy suffer casualities. Better them and us, I say!

Reality sucks
None will ever confuse Tucker with Mike Savage or any other true conservative. This is on point and written so even neocons and liberals can understand the reason to object to Iran getting their hands on Atom Bombs or any other nuclear arsenol. But with our president promising to destroy the national defense shield this makes it a life threatening proposal for all American citizens in the United States. In these dangerous times the priority should be securing the southern Meican border while the president of Mexico is offering military access, Obama should go to the United Nations and propose an international force to protect the citizens of Mexico.

Seadog
Most studies of the planned invasion posit casualties of around a million for the US. They could be higher. The great bulk of the Japanese army in the field had yet to even face US troops and was undefeated. The casualties among the Japanese, who were planning a kamikaze style civilian defense, would have been in the tens of millions. The atom bomb saved more Japanese lives than American.

If it wern't for
Gutenberg's bloody press nobody would have known what was going on with Japan... Pay up Yurpies!

Robert
The difference between you and Dr. Douglas is you actually read something, understand it and do not try to put a left-wing, "we done bad" slant on it.

I see no way that anybody could not understand that Truman approving the dropping of the bomb saved both American and Japanese lives. There will be, of course, folks like Dr. Douglas who can't see that.

The man sure makes obtaining a PH.D look an easy effort. Maybe his degree is in something hard like, maybe, advanced gravel sorting, or some such.

It is getting increasingly difficult to respect anybody with an advanced degree, let alone anybody who is a professor.

But the Threat to use is effective
Rich Tucker is wrong. The US has done more than just live with the bomb. We have threatened to use it on numerous occasions to obtain favorable military, political, and foreign policy outcomes. The actual dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was a warning to the Soviet Union over their policies in Eastern Europe. The Korean War ended because Pres. Eisenhower and his Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, modified the doctrine of “containment” with a new doctrine called “nuclear brinkmanship.” Unlike Pres. Truman, Eisenhower communicated his willingness to nuke the Chinese and North Koreans to end the war. Certainly, Pres. Kennedy threatened to take the world to nuclear war over the Cuban missile crises. “Nuclear brinkmanship” is more of a threat to world peace than the actual use of the Bomb. It is a desperate attempt to obtain hegemony without actual use of the bomb. Chaka Z.

The Atom Bombs saved lives, good lives

Some 140,000 people in Hiroshima and 80,000 in Nagasaki were killed almost immediately by just two bombs.

Yes but, China's official estimate is 300,000 casualties during the rape of Nanjing, based on the evaluation of the Nanjing War Crimes Tribunal.

So don’t try to tell me our bombs did not save a million lives, when compared to the deaths caused by an invasion.

Nam65-66
Thanks for the heads-up. I unfortunately was never taught about Truman and the Bomb. One hopes we won't have to go down that road again but if necessary I'd like to think that our generals will do what they must if Obama will not.

Keep educating us; the brainless libs will never benefit but those of us conservatives younger than about 50 appreciate it. (lol I'll be 50 in November myself so am milking the 'under 50' thing for all it's worth!) :)

Britain and France disarmed in the 30s
and were unable to withstand attack by Hitler's GE in WW II.

If we disarm while *making nice* with Iran and bowing to Saudi Arabia and letting Biden, the one who said Iraq should be allowed to break down into three regions, constantly warn Israel not to preemptively strike Iran, we will be sitting ducks for nuclear blackmail.

What would the O do now if he were threatened with an a-bomb attack in NYC or abandon all military sites around the world? He would hide under the desk in the Oval Office and wet his pants.

That millions of cons./Rep. either didn't vote or voted for O is appalling and the reason we are in this situation today. I hope all those people who bragged here how they wouldn't ever vote McCain have gotten the message themselves and are going to tea parties, hounding Cong. with emails and letters, or we'll be stuck with this crew of punks for years.

jim
I agree totally...I've known too many WWII veterans of the Pacific campaign to be convinced of anything other than that if we had invaded the Japanese mainland, our own casualties would have been catastrophic (heck, my dad would have been one of them and I'd have never been born), and that Adm. Halsey's prediction would have come true -- where he said that "bythe time this is all over, the only place the Japanese language will be spoken is is Hell."

Not to mention that if it hadn't been for the Bomb, it's almost certain we would have found ourselves in a conventional all-out war with the Soviet Union at some point after WWII.

koolmuse

It is obvious you have no experience with reading or understanding the history of WWII. I had parents who lived it.

The bombs did indeed save more lives than they took.

Aliveinhim...
...AHHHHH!!!! To be under 50 again!!!It has been so long for me I almost forget what it was like. :-)

If Nuclear Deterrence Didn't Work
Why do U think the B52 Fleet spent so much time Orbiting the NorthPole Areas during the 1960-70?
I know for FACT we weren't mapping the *Northern Lights*..CHEERS

Jesus is Risen - He is Alive

Hallelujah, "He is risen!"
Jesus is gone up on high!
Burst the bars of death asunder;
Angels shout, and men reply:
He is risen, He is risen,
Living now, no more to die.

Hallelujah He is risen!
Our exalted Head to be;
Sends the witness of the Spirit
That our Advocate is He:
He is risen, He is risen,
Justified in Him are we.

Hallelujah, He is risen!
Death for all has lost his sting;
Christ, Himself the Resurrection,
From the grave "His own" will bring:
He is risen, He is risen,
Living Lord and coming King.

oh Death Where Is Thy Sting,
grave, Where's Thy Victory,
in Three Days, The Stone Rolled Away.
stone Rolled Away,
an Empty Grave Proves What I Say,
he Lives Today.

They started it
We finished it!

No Answers From The Left
Yesterday, I challenged anyone who had any knowledge of military history to propose an alternative to the atom bombing of Japan that would have produced less, either for the US or for the Japanese.
The left is always quick to condemn, but they have no real answers for the hard questions we have to face in real life.
