Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Before we put the holidays behind us for another year, it’s time for one final resolution: Let’s vow that, in 2009, we won’t misuse our holiday icons.

In a late December, the political cartoonist for Florida Today brazenly violated this proposal. The artwork shows “the Grinch” holding a list whilst the stereotypical white guys in suits (standing in for the cigar-chomping lobbyists of old) chat nearby. “Legislative leaders brought this guy in to help us determine which budget items to cut when the special session begins,” one of the men says. Meanwhile, Grinch crosses off spending for “the needy,” “schools,” “the disabled” and “public health,” among other critical programs.

Oh, please.

As soon as there’s a shortfall in any government, we’re warned that any spending cuts would immediately endanger “the children,” “the unemployed,” “the disabled,” and so forth. Yet it’s impossible to believe there’s anyone out there -- liberal, conservative or undecided -- who thinks government (at any level) is completely efficient.

Undoubtedly Florida’s state government, (and its county governments and local governments and, come to that, our federal government) could afford to cut spending by, say, 15 percent in these lean economic times.

As a micro example, just look directly below the “Grinch” cartoon, where a letter writer encourages Florida’s Lee County to save money by “reducing garbage pickup to once a week.” Seems like a decent idea to someone who lives in a county where trash is, indeed, picked up just once a week. Besides, think how much money that would save for the truly needy.

It’s only reasonable to expect our governments to slash their budgets. After all, everyone else is reducing spending.

“The fact that sales at Starbucks are going down, while sales at McDonald's are going up, shows that people are adjusting to economic adversity by cutting back their spending,” columnist and economist Thomas Sowell wrote recently. “Only in Congress do people adjust to economic adversity and growing deficits by spending more money.” Exactly.

As an example, our federal government ended 2008 with its $700 billion plan (or lack thereof) to bail out banks, automakers and insurance companies. The new year is expected to bring a massive “stimulus plan” that could cost $775 billion more.

Why do we need all this spending? “The big fear people have is loss of jobs. That’s haunting the whole economy,” an adviser to President-elect Barack Obama told the Chicago Tribune. “People are holding back from buying because of fear of job loss. So, presumably, if people hear the goal is to create or preserve 3 million jobs, layoffs aren’t quite as scary.”

In other words, if the government can spend enough, it can convince the rest of us to spend, too. Good luck with that math.

Maybe, instead of “investing” in road building and so forth, Washington should just hire 3 million or so people. That would protect those jobs since, once on the government payroll, these millions of people will have virtually guaranteed jobs for life.

Consider Florida again. The state legislature will meet in special session starting Jan. 5 and attempt to close a $2.3 billion deficit. But the state’s governor has already announced he won’t be eliminating jobs.

“I would like to draw to your attention that none of these recommendations involve furloughs or layoffs,” Gov. Charlie Crist told lawmakers as he sketched his plans for the controversial special session. “Our state employees provide an invaluable resource to all Floridians and should be commended for their continued service.” So all Florida bureaucrats will remain on the job, apparently helping all those troubled widows, orphans, etc. Bet the Grinch is ticked off about that.

As columnist Mark Steyn likes to say, a government big enough to give you everything you want still isn’t big enough to convince you to give any of it back when times get bad. The media abounds with bad economic news these days. It would be a perfect time for governments to set a good example by slashing spending across the board.

Don’t hold your breath.

Excellent point
@Imithohtar

I wrote my Congressman and Senators this morning and said the very same thing ("dropping all unconstitutional programs").

Drop Taxes Now
Drop Property taxes on one single family style home.

So we don't end up standing in the snow with just our guns and Bible for protection.

Drop Payroll taxes would help to make our labor competitive.

More people with a real job is better then being stacked up in some public housing project fighting off the Indians not taxed.

bryce the incessant whiner
under the lack of leadership provided by dims and the last two federal budgets, pelousy and land deal reid increased the amount of corporate welfare and pork spending in the budget

Then we had the $700 billion bailout which in order to get passsed the dims needed to add an additional $170 billion in sweetners.

Now your heroes the dims are talking about another $1 trillion or so spending. But since they couldn't add any oversight to the last stimulas bill no one is being held acountable so why should we think any more bailouts will work when you role model barney fwankdoesn't think corporations should be punished for making bad decisions that the taxpayers are now paying for.

And congress has yet to deal with the promised $4.5 trillion in new spending your messiah promised during the campaign when he bought the election.

It seems we are just on the cusp of huge amounts of irresponsible spending by the dims you vote for and fully support

Where to cut?
How about cutting Congress' staff? I believe the current payroll is approaching $2.0 BILLION. Seems there has got to be some fat, not to mention pork, that could be saved.

By all means
But instead of starting with cuts to social service programs how about cutting off subsidies and tax breaks to industres which according to 'free market' principles should have as little gov't 'interference' as possible?

MickeyG
Indeed President Reagan DID say that quote that Scrap Iron attributed to 'Unknown'

Yes, MickeyG
It was Reagan. An apt one, too.

Scrap Iron,
Didn't Reagan make that unknown quote that was in your post

Congress
No ones life, liberty or propety are safe while the legislature in in session.
Mark Twain

The government is like a baby'salimentary canal.
Ahealthy appetite at one end and no responsibility at the other.
Unknown

Support thr Fair Tax

Jeffrey
I'll second that motion.

Addictions...
One doesn't expect a person addicted to a drug to be rational about their use of that drug. If drug use gets them fired, it's never the fault of using the drug -- it's the boss, the co-workers, the economy, whatever. The idea of stopping or cutting back on the drug use is never on the table. Instead, the addict reacts to being fired by ... getting high.

Control is the drug of choice for politicians. They will never, willingly, cut back on or surrender their control. No matter how strong a case we make that their control is the cause of the problem. Instead, they cope with their failure by grasping for more control.

What is needed is an intervention, not an arguement.

Regards,

A Radical Idea
Here's a radical idea that will never fly. Let's reduce spending by dropping all unconstitutional programs.

That will never happen. There are far too many grasping self-important politicians that depend on it and way too many clueless voters that vote for it.

Liberty dies by bleeding to death from a trillion cuts with red tape.

Have no fear, Mr. Tucker
I know the media abounds with bad news daily but after January 20th the news reports will be much brighter. The economy will be just as bad, but the news will spin it positively and we'll all feel better.

Congress
is the most useless thing America Produces.

Government and our needs
How stupid of us to think that governnment, a group of idiots like us, can rescue us in our idiosy and supply our every need!
We elected these fools and what have they brought us?
More idiosy,waste and evil.
There is so much self-interest on the part of the so-called leaders in congress that I'm supprised that anything is done except at the detriment of the average citizen.
Something must be done to get these jerks to do what they were elected to do, Lead and protect the country.

Money thrown at ineffective scools
I don't care how much money is thrown at schools, until the teacher's union agrees to test teacher's and get rid of those who are incapable of doing the job they are paid to do. You can also blame parents who absolutely believe their little darlings aren't all geniuses who shouldn't be punished with a failing grade when they get caught cheating on tests. plagerizing' and misconduct in class. Tthe schools have dumbed down classes so much that the children are being done a disservise by not actually having to learn at grade level. That's one reason American's graduating from high school and college are so far behind students from other countries that value "good" educations for their students to be able to compete with anyone. What amazes me is that there are students who excel despite all the worst teachers.

Spending Cuts
You would think the congress, who has caused most of the chaos we are experiencing, would be the first to wish to cut back to do their bit to help the economy they helped trash.

What do they do? They just accepted another massive raise in their already bloated salaries. If I owned a company and my employees esteem was as low as theirs,I would try to make them look as if they were earning their keep by cutting their pay,not giving them a raise.

feargalx
school districts like wash dc are already spending some $10,000 per student with mediocre terst scores.

The question is how much is needed before the country wakes up and realizes that the teachers union are not doing their job and that parents and the kids should have access to a better education system the what the public schools are not providing.

Paying for failure will never solve the proiblem

billy & feargal
Billy - A fair number of voters tried that option two years ago and it created an economic crisis and $700 billion bail-out plan. Apparently that is to be followed by another $800 billion "stimulus" package. Regime change just put higher spenders in the spending position.

Feargal - you are right about infrastructure maintenance, but I'm skeptical about the NEED for such at this time. I live in Alaska where the roads are always rough except for the few months after a rebuild, so when I hit those highways in Pennsylvania, I think, what are these people complaining about. Most interstates could go without repaving for several years. Bridges, OTOH, are a different issue altogether. That involves safety, not comfort. Comfort is a luxury we cannot currently afford.

Also, there are much better technologies out there that would reduce repavings to once every decade rather than every few years, but because we insist upon road projects going to the lowest bidder, the US keeps getting throw-away roads. Check out Sweden and Norway, where the highways need repaving every 20 years or the contractor must pay for it if it needs it sooner.

We need to get real in this country about what we do and do not need and only fix the things we actually need to fix, rather than spreading money around like it has no value. We're bankrupting our country with that attitude.

infastructure
The government does not build roads, airports and bridges -- that is the work of private contractors who are awarded jobs. Our roads actually need to be rebuilt -- I would not advise us to allow them to get worse and worse. Schools, on the other hand, are quite different. Internet based learning is very effective. Achievement testing and AP credits mean more (to me) than a subjective grade.

Does anyone
know if congress is stupid, ignorant, lacking in decency or just hell bent on destroying this country.

Any person you could pick off the street is smart enough to know the reason this country is in trouble is because of vote buying entitlements.

govt inefficientcy
working folks are told to tighten their belts and still are told they must pay mopre taxes to keep government slugs picking up a paycheck.

The only recourse is to throw all these bums out office who continue to abuse citizens with wasteful spending and their never ending desire to increase taxes which end up funding an entitled class of govt workers.

If joe average must cut back on his spending why is govt immune from saving tax dollars and now talking in many states of raising taxes
