Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Some questions answer themselves.

For example, the cover of the September issue of The Atlantic magazine asks, “Who’s the real Unifier,” Barack Obama or John McCain. “Obama and McCain both say they want to usher in a new, less divisive brand of politics. Which of them has the better chance?” the story’s introduction asks.

The entire piece could have been two sentences long. “Since arriving in the Senate, in 2005, [Obama] has voted with a majority of Senate Democrats almost 97 percent of the time, according to Congressional Quarterly,” writes longtime political commentator Ronald Brownstein. Meanwhile, “McCain has voted with a majority of Republicans 85 percent of the time since entering the Senate, in 1987.”

That record provides your answer. McCain has often taken positions that angered conservatives, and he’s reached out to liberals for help on everything from federal judges to campaign finance reform. If either man can “unify” the country -- and that’s unlikely -- it’s McCain.

And on a broad scale, if either party is the “big tent” party, it’s the GOP.

Recall that Sen. Zell Miller, a life-long Democrat from Georgia, gave the keynote address at the Republican convention four years ago. And Sen. Joe Lieberman, abandoned by the Democrat netroots but re-elected in Connecticut as an Independent two years ago, will speak to this year’s GOP gathering. Can anyone remember a Republican being invited to the Democrat convention?

But this is The Atlantic, so a two-sentence answer -- no matter how complete -- wouldn’t have sufficed. Brownstein rambled on for several pages, so let’s take a closer look at some of his more questionable statements.

“American voters nearly always elect a president who responds to the flaws they have found in his predecessor,” Brownstein begins. As an example, “Jimmy Carter was more honest than Richard Nixon.” While that’s probably true, it’s also true that Carter followed Ford, not Nixon. Oops.

Brownstein adds that George H.W. Bush was elected because he was “kinder and gentler” than Ronald Reagan. Hum. That’s not exactly right. He was elected because the country wanted to give Reagan a third term, but couldn’t (that pesky Constitution!) so took a chance on Reagan’s second-in-command. Still, while we’re playing the opposite game, let’s try a couple more.

Maybe Americans were tired of Eisenhower’s experience and competence, and so elected JFK. Maybe they were tired of George H.W. Bush’s buttoned-down fidelity, and so went with the swinging Bill Clinton. Et Cetera.

Brownstein also takes McCain to task unfairly. “Obama’s language about his opponent generally has been restrained,” he writes. “That’s emphatically not the case when McCain talks about Obama. McCain seems incapable of masking feelings about his younger opponent that border on disdain. He often says that Obama, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has ‘no experience on national-security issues.’”

Yes, but isn’t truth the best defense against libel? McCain’s making the very point he must make if he hopes to win this election. He’s got the experience, Obama doesn’t. It isn’t “negative campaigning” to point that out; it’s a matter of political survival.

Obama realizes this, and is touchy about the question of experience. “Well, actually, my experience in foreign policy is probably more diverse than most others in the field,” he said during the Democrat primary process. “I’m somebody who has actually lived overseas, somebody who has studied overseas. I majored in international relations.”

But maybe Obama ought to go back to school. “While pressing Obama to visit Iraq with him, McCain said he would use such a trip to ‘educate’ his rival,” Brownstein writes. Again, though, McCain’s making a good point. Recall that last year McCain strongly supported the then-controversial “surge” into Iraq. Obama opposed it.

In the fall of 2006 the Illinois senator said, “It is clear at this point that we cannot, through putting in more troops or maintaining the presence that we have, expect that somehow the situation is going to improve, and we have to do something significant to break the pattern that we've been in right now." That something would, apparently, have been to withdraw troops.

Now that the surge has worked, though, Obama’s eager to celebrate the fact that U.S. troops will be able to pull out in the months ahead. But that’s only because they followed McCain’s formula, not his. And they’re leaving having stabilized the situation in Iraq.

There’s no doubt which candidate has experience reaching across the aisle to members of the other party. The question is: Do voters even care? We won’t know that until November.

The Great Unifier NOT
Obama supporters constantly try to tell us how their messiah is going to Unify the country.
Yet, in his short tenure in the senate he has never crossed the aisle. His one attempt at bi-artisanship (with McCain) was abandoned before it bore fruit.

The man has voted straight party line, every time he had the gonads to actually vote anything but Present. This isn't Unifying, this is partisanship pure and simple.

Of course to democrats, B-partisanship means getting republicans to vote their way.

Unity for American not socialist values
This nonsense that the MSM thinks is underlying every American family at their kitchen table:
'we want a Prez who reaches across the isle and gets us even more Govt. control, regs, taxes, and defeats internationally.' That would be the going across the isle John would have to do to be a so called unifier. How bout this? Stop voting for the socialist pacifist Party in the Congressional elections. Elect ole John to stop Islamofascism, keep Russia and China on their toes, appoint Scalia like jurists, protect our borders and give us educational choice. Now that would provide real unity for the American public without having to COMPROMISE WITH THE SOCIALISTS!

There will be no unifier.
Our belief and value system has been under attack by those who view everything by the way they feel and by their own needs so as to produce a million different opinions of truth. This has been deliberate and is past the point of no return. My advice is to hold fast to your (traditional) beliefs, teach your children, persuade those that you can and wait for our Lord's coming. All will be set straight at that time.

Lots of Holes...
in your arguments, Mr. Tucker.
Here's 2
While Carter did of course succeed Ford, the 72 election did feature Nixon, which was the last time VOTERS had a say in the matter. Oops back at ya.
The "surge" argument is specious at best... Sen. Obama wanted the troops withdrawn. Gee, turns out he voted for them not to be there in the first place. Had the subsequent invasion and occupation not occurred, that's right folks, no surge needed.
Interesting stats about senatorial voting records, but haven't both candidates missed a lot of votes, especially this year? Seems as if that would be a telling statistic. Both men are tacking with the political winds now.

There will be no unification in the US, too many divisions, too little common ground.

Actually, the Great O was not in the Sen
to vote one way or the other in 2003.

The Senate voted for the Iraq incursion 87-12-1.

O was then in the IL legislature voting against giving abortion fetal survivors the death sentence by not allowing breathing babies medical attention as they hadn't had the good sense to expire before being delivered.

O has not yet recognized the surge's success.

As chair of the subcommittee on NATO and Afghanistan, he has never convened a meeting, where he might have actually learned something about the fighting there, instead of spending gadzillions of his millions of campaign contributions or whatever $$ to have to actually visit half-way around the world to get some facts about anything.

The Great O is inexperienced, unteachable, a liar, Southside Chicago Daley toady, and fraud.

He couldn't unite his shoe laces.

And the people who support him don't want a unifier. They want the power to tell the rest of us how to live, spend our money, drive our cars, set our thermostats, and eat our food (see HamNation--Obama on your shoulder).

If they were Puritans, they would put us in the stocks. All hail the Great O.

There will never be
so-called Unity, as long as the disease of Liberalism exists! Like a cancer eating away at it's host body. Liberal/Socialism is slowly changing our "Free Society" to one of Socialism.

The Liberal's idea of Unity is for the entire country to be "unified" as slaves to the State. No President can maintain our Free Republic
or establish harmony until the disease of Liberalism is eradicated!

VP HUCKABEE HELPS MCCAIN WIN in 2008!!

MIKE HUCKABEE IS A FIGHTER AND ONE OF THE GREATEST COMMUNICATORS OF OUR TIME!

Most American's DO NOT favor abortion. Nor do they wish to align themselves with factions dedicated in butchering innocent babies inside and outside the womb. And NO, that baby is NOT the women's body; it is a separate body with a separate heartbeat and separate brain activity. And YES, the unborn baby FEELS PHYSICAL PAIN as it is being ripped out of what should be the safest place on earth - mother's womb!

The Planned Parenthood abortionists lie to young women all the time just to get their money, while those ex-mothers and ex-fathers suffer emotional distress as they realize everyday that they have just allowed a child killer to convince them, not only to take their money, but also to kill their precious little baby. Abortion STOPS A BEATING HEART and the future of a civilization.

People weep and wail over the loss of a High School football player destined for a great professional career who had been gunned down by a random shooter, but yet we will never know the great deficit future generations will suffer for the loss of over 50 million innocent babies in this country alone. Shame on America for tolerating this horror ... and shame on its citizens for tolerating their personal complacency. Pro-choice is a lie - Babies do not choose to die!

Away with this archaic freakish, barbaric practice! It will soon be done away with, along with these fake pro-abortion polling numbers! As long as the president chooses judicial nominees his Vice-president better be pro-Life if he is ever going to win an election.

"A nation that cannot protect its most innocent and helpless citizens and the sanctity of human life is a weak nation that will utterly collapse economically, socially, relationally and entirely." - HMH

Leadershio, Not Unity
Unity is a fine concept that will never be
achieved.

Better we should have real leadership from a
person with the moral values we share. Once
this leadership is displayed and results are
evident, unity will begin to take root and,
with any good fortune, will spread as people
begin to percieve the value of the inevitable
improvement in our lives and in the direction
of our contry.

ApolloSpeaks
Lets just hope your right!

IF ONLY
If only we were as a Nation United, we would have the two most patriotic, intelligent experienced and honest American candidates to choose from. Millions of dollars would not have to be spent to convince the American people of their ability to hold the position of our President and the campaign wouldn't have to last more than a few months.
There is only one candidate with the qualifications of patriotism, intelligence, experience and honesty, yet we are divided.
The candidate who is unpatriotic, unintelligent(57 States), unexperienced and untruthful campaigns on the platform of "DIVIDE AND CONQUER".
So it is we, the American people, who will choose to be conquered by the most inept and corrupt or the candidate who might just stand up to the inept and corrupt congress.

Good Point
The end of your article is the crux of the matter. We really know who out of the two we are left with (which I am not really crazy about either one)will be the better president. It is just a matter of whether people really delve in and research and read up on the two candidates and make the better choice or whether they listen to the rhetoric. God help us. We really need it this year.

The Divided State of America
In this world of far left liberals taking the main stage, the word unity is just a sound bite some use to get elected. Others don't even pretend they want to unify America or be the elected representative for all of America. Nancy Pelosi is the speaker for her view point only. Forget what most Americans want. It seems Obama will be the same.

The last few presidential elections have been very close - fairly evenly divided between red states and blue states. Shouldn't the president be purple and represent all of us.

National Unity
The last time there was a perceived national unity for any length of time (at least among the populace) was during the Reagan years.

And this occurred because Reagan was a true leader who did not compromise his core principles - principles which were extremely popular with the country as a whole.

That's not to say that he never compromised - he did, after all, have to work with a predominantly Democratic legislature.

But when he needed to get something really important accomplished, he arose on the Bully Pulpit and made his case to the people - who in turn put pressure on their elected representatives of both Parties.

Most of the time, it worked.

Of the two major candidates this year, I'll give Obama the nod for being the better orator in a scripted, speech making environment.

But his problem is that, unlike Reagan, if he truly revealed his core principles, he'd be at odds with the majority of Americans.

That's a huge problem for him - and certainly doesn't predict any "hope" of him being a a great "unifier".

No Unity
Since our taxes are as higher or higher han many Europeon Countries and we have gone along with a massive transfer of power to Washington, it does little good to talk about states rights, the constitution, fiscal responsibility or the founders. We have centralized power in Washington, turned the states into little more than administrative districts, and are currently being asked to vote for two senators, neither of which have any intent of changing what we have become. Obama may have voted with the Democrats 97% of the time, but McCain voted with Bush 95% of the time. The GOP and Bush, in combination, had much of the power during the last 8 years when budgets increased from $1.88 trillion to $3.25 trillion. $500 billion of this years budget represents deficit spending, the total of which, in these same 8 years, increased from $5.2 trillion to $9.7 trillion.

This is what the American people have voted for over time. Their incessant demands that Washington spend the money necessary to secure their own future has brought us here.

Having long ago abandoned the constitution as written by the founders, it does us little good to now refer to that document - or to their vision. It is not, after all, the vision of the American people.

Cont'd.
Apollo has commented that America's responsibility is to spread Democracy. What he does not say, I suspect, is how America can continue to pay the rising costs of the social programs American's now demand, while equally maintaining the defense establishment necessary to support that vision. We currently spend 22% of the federal budget on defense, the rest of the world spends 5% to 10%. Because we spend similar amounts to the rest of the world on social programs, while paying similar taxes, we now run constant deficits - and those deficits represent the difference in defense spending.

Unless we find a way to pay for both, America cannot indefinitely continue to pursue this vision. Bush and the GOP could not solve it, McCain will not solve it, and the Democrats will not solve it.

And this is the underlying political war which ensures only that their can be no agreement and no meaningful unity in this country.

Americans are no longer willing to give up butter for guns. Their demands are constant and incessant. No politician could persuade them to do so, and McCain and Obama will not even try

Redlac
Your arguments regarding deficit spending assumes that defense spending is the only area (in broad terms) that is "optional".

Constitutionally speaking - it represents one of the few areas the federal government is supposed to be spending our money.

I won't argue that we could drastically reduce defense spending. One simple way would be for us to force our allies to provide for their own defense - especially the Europeans.

If we did that, the difference between our spending and theirs would become more comparable as a percentage of total budgets.

Perhaps you should check your math.

Hey Jayhawk, Pull your head out!
"Had the subsequent invasion and occupation not occurred, that's right folks, no surge needed."

Only because you don't recognize that the extremest Muslims have declared war on us; a FACT that your vice-presidential cantidate DID recognize when he voted to go into Iraq.

Obama simply has NO qualifications to be president whatsoever, which compares favorably with your qualifications to be an analyst of the situation.

Unity is a pipe dream...
as long as there are enough people who see government as the best problem solver and are willing to have their own freedoms limited in order to control others that they do not agree with.

Most people don't even know what the Constitutional responsibilities of the Federal Government are, as outlined in the Constitution. Government was never intended to be a charitable organization but so many people would rather have their tax dollars distributed through a corrupt and inefficient system prone to fraud and abuse of both the givers and the takers than see to it themselves.

A "JOB" is the best and most reliable solution to poverty. Government mandated wages, benefits, etc., are the reason there are less jobs and more poverty. When businesses cannot operate and realize a beneficial profit margin they close their doors.

Small businesses, historically the provider of jobs to unskilled workers, are the hardest hit and the most vulnerable to government intrusion through over regulation. The business owner will cut back on hired help and do the work themselves or close their doors.

The unintended consequences of government mandates, too often leads to less security for the working poor and in the long run does nothing but hurt the very people such mandates were initiated to help.

People are better problem solvers than government. When government gets out of the way amazing things can happen.

We Could be Unified...
If we would choose by advantages rather than emotion.

Primus54 pointed out that "Reagan was a true leader who did not compromise his core principles - principles which were extremely popular with the country as a whole."

May I just emphasize "EXTREMELY POPULAR WITH THE COUNTRY AS A WHOLE."

The people of this country are, for the most part, not far apart on their core principals. Most of us are opposed to government waste, most of us do support the troops and want the country to be strong, most of us want to develop our countries own energy resources rather than spend $700 billion on foreign oil every year and most of us don't like government intruding into our personal lives. I could go on and on with the things we agree on.

My point is, we are hiring an EMPLOYEE to do a job for us. We need to hire that employee for his strengths, (advantages) in being able to do that job rather than for his status as a celebrity.

I have many disagreements with John McCain, but I will agree that he can do the job.

B. Obama may be a nice guy and I am pleased that it is now possible for a "person of color" to be elected president but the truth is: (A) He is not qualified for the job and (B) His core beliefs (if he were to make them known) do NOT agree with those of most Americans.

CHOOSE BY ADVANTAGES!

But his problem is that, unlike Reagan, if he truly revealed his core principles, he'd be at odds with the majority of Americans.

Packrat/Primus
What do "average" taxes on the middle class (however you define that particular group) have to do with the total income tax collected. The middle class, after all, only pays (depending on how you define it, 20%-30% of income taxes collected).

Make sure you compare apples to apples when looking at the middle class. American Income taxes are not only federal, but also state - something Europeon governments do not have. Then toss in SS/Medicare which are also taxes on income. Combine the employee and employer contribution, and that adds 12.4% to your income tax as well. So, add it up, and then compare. Federal Income Tax, State Income Tax, and SS/Medicare Income tax. What's your total now?

The bottom line is that whereas some countries have higher total tax takes, countries like Italy, Spain, Greece, and even countries like Australia have similar or lower tax rates than the US.

And Primus - I didn't advocate cutting defense spending. Simply commented that we are refusing to deal with the basic issue - which is that if you cannot persuade Americans to "accept" less social spending, then you cannot also pay for the level of spending we insist on for defense and international commitments - w/o running deficits.

And this is the underlying budgetary reason you cannot get unity in this country. Many people on these blogs promote the US as the "leader" of democracy. They promote our taking responsibility for regions of the world that 50 years ago we would never have agreed to take responsibility for. We argue about the Caucasus, the Balkans, 1/2 dozen countries in the middle east, and even Asia.

And in taking that responsibility, we absolve others or their own responsibility. Just as we've raised a generation of Washington dependent voters, we've raised a generation of internationally dependent countries.

Redlac
Your explanation in your 10:58 AM to me makes perfect sense - and I agree wholeheartedly on the issue of international "dependents".

Thanks for the clarification.

Cheers!

Unity
What does that mean? Can we all just get along or having a vision or convictions most people can agree on?

Obama has a million dollar home McCain has eight. Question is how many did McCain get from a former fund raiser? Obama believes in wealth redistribution but accepts bending the rules for his own bennefit.

Obama for getting the troops out but did not want to force the issue with a resolution.

Obama against the war but selects Joe Biden.
Obama for change but selects another white guy.
Obama against the concept of abortion yet for abortion for his children should they mistakenly have sex yet can't seem define when it is legally acceptable for an abortion.
Obama not against abortion but wants to leave it to twelve select all knowing human beings rather than have it decided by the Congress of the United States.

obamas religion
obama is really a jewish muslim

Reagan Revisited
The last Federal Budget passed under Reagan's watch was the 1989 budget. That budget was for $991 billion. If you factor in inflation, you'd then multiply that number by 1.73 to get todays dollars, and that budget would then be $1.71 billion in 2008 dollars. The deficit that year was $1.53 billion, or $265 billion in 2008 dollars.

The Federal budget for this year, however, has grown to $3.25 trillion. The deficit is now projected at almost $500 billion. The difference of $1.54 trillion between the 1989 budget as stated in 2008 dollars, and the current budget, represents the growth in spending by the federal government, as does the doubling of the deficit.

Since 1989 we have had 12 years of GOP presidents and 8 years of Democratic Presidents. The GOP ran congress for 12 of those years, and the Democrats for 8. In the Senate, the GOP ran it for 11 years, and the Democrats for 9.

Bottom line? The Reagan Revolution died with Reagan. Government spending and its size has almost doubled since he left office. And both parties are clearly responsible. In fact, the GOP bears a proportionately greater responsibility than the Democrats.

Reagan would turn over in his grave.

Just my hummble opinion....

Just my hummble opinion....

1. McCain / Romney 2008 = OK, Great on economy, good on other conservative issues, seen by some as a flip/flopper on issues like Abortion, some may not like his Mormon faith, although that is a small minority....

2. McCain / Huckabee 2008 = non-starter, great with evangelicals & Christians, has executive experience, bad tax record as governor, & a gift to the Dems....

3. McCain / Thompson 2008 = Absolutely the BEST for America & Federalism, awesome on national security & foreign policy, but WON'T happen because Fred is not interested in a VP slot....

4. McCain / Rice 2008 = Strong choice, GREAT foriegn policy experience, could help with women vote & minority vote, but may turn "Anti-Bushies" away....

5. McCain / Michael Steele 2008 = Good ticket, might do well with minorities....

6. McCain / Palin 2008 = Good ticket, executive experience, could help with women vote....

7. McCain / Hunter 2008 = Good pick, Good conservative, maybe could help with California, Great on homeland Security, Border Security, & military,
may be percieved to be to "hawkish" of a ticket for some....

8. McCain /Lieberman 2008 = BAD PICK, Great on National Security & War on Terror, has been liberal on most social & economical issues though, While exceptable to some Democrats & Independents, could likely cause a MAJOR rift with true Conservatives & Republicans.....

Just my hummble opinion....

What's your list of VPs ? ? ?

Color Purple, Where Are You?

FLORIDAINDEPENDENT (9:03 am post) writes: "The last few presidential elections have been very close - fairly evenly divided between red states and blue states. Shouldn't the president be purple and REPRESENT ALL OF US."

Well said. It's too bad someone among us did not make that suggestion to our current President when, just after the 2004 election, fresh from victory, Mr. Bush, bathed in humility and savoring his victory, spoke these rousing words to the American people:

"I HAVE POLITICAL CAPITAL AND I INTEND TO USE IT."

With a golden opportunity to unify a seriously divided nation, Pres. Bush chose an in-your-face message to those who opposed him, with an implied warning of what was to come.

The color purple obviously makes Pres. Bush see red.

Thoughts.
Federalism is a dead issue other than in the minds of those who refuse to take a look at what we now are, as opposed to once were. No one will turn back the clock. The constitution bears no resemblance to those 100's of thousands of pages of legal precedent written by the federal judiciary over 200 years that have supplanted it and centralized the power and money in Washington. The Republic is but a shadow, a form unrelated to reality. It has some nice talking points - but little else.

As far as Rice, Bush's foreign policy is not perceived by 70% of the public as a successful foreign policy. Further, McCain "IS" foreign policy, it's his strength. His VP most likely will be someone who brings economic or ticket balancing credentials to the table.

Of your choices, I like Steele the best. McCain doesn't need someone strong on foreign policy, and he doesn't have to go for experience. At 72, he has both. A little youth, some vigor, some experience with money, and an appeal to groups he may not appeal to would be the best option. Steele could clearly take the race issue off the table, and debate Obama on that level.

unifier or not
I SAY THIS WITH MIXED EMOTIONS---- IT'S GONNA BE MITT ROMNEY!
IF YOU ARE READING ANYTHING OUT SIDE OF TOWNHALL, THE SIGNS ARE GETTING HUGE IN
THAT DIRECTION !
MITT RAISED 50 MILLION DOLLARS ON ONE WEEKEND!
MONEY DOES HELP ON THOSE TV PLUGS!
AND HE DOES KNOW THE ECONOMY !
YOU CAN CRITICIZE HIM ALL YOU WANT --HE HAS ACCOMPLISHED SOME VERY GOOD THINGS MORE THAN MOST PEOPLE ! REMEMBER , I SAID W/MIXED EMOTIONS
DIDN'T I!?
ELVIS

Unified - with the left
McCain voted with Republicans 85% of the time. 50% of the time, the legislation passed by the GOP was PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL SOCIALIST legislation. That means that McCain went along with most if not all of the PROGRESSIVE LIBERAL SOCIALIST legislation that has been passed on Capitol Hill. What 15% of the bills did McCain oppose anyway?

We DO know that McCain supports no national borders, limits on free speech, environmental cap-and-trade, and gun control.

Change Back To Basics
America doesn't need more global changes. America needs someone who will go back to basics and ensure the protection for all Americans under the U.S. Constitution and preserve the original supreme laws of the land without any change so that Americans can restore the decency, morality, human rights, and equitable rights of all of our citizens by providing jobs and working for companies who believe in the American people and will make products MADE IN THE U.S. We need change to restore America not allow it to be trampled upon by foreign countries who are being allowed to buy up our property and land.

Time for the ants to stand up
to the grasshoppers. How long can we maintain a conservative position in the U.S. when just about 50% of the people pay no income tax and are therefore liberals. Do you think that they will vote for Republicans when the liberal Democrats are the party of handouts. The main problem is that when the grasshoppers become more numerous than the ants, that society will fall as was demonstrated in the first settlement in the U.S. at Jamestown. Socialism may succeed in Religious Organizations where all are required to work and contribute to the group good, but not in secular society where not all are required to be productive.

Redlac- I agree and disagree
Lincoln destroyed the roots of Federalism and the tree is slowly expiring assisted by the Justices. I disagree with the VP choice. I think that Mac should select a woman because there are a lot of angry women out there. Other candidates may help in a state or two, but a woman VP helps him in all 50 states.
