Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It’s important to set difficult goals and work to reach them. But it’s also important to look back occasionally and realize how much you’ve already accomplished. When it comes to race, Sen. Barack Obama’s presidential bid gives our country -- which is famous for striving but not known for introspection -- a perfect opportunity to do just that.

Critics insist the U.S. remains a racist nation. Race-baiters such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton still make nice livings insisting that racism is all around us. The United Nations, an organization that contains a number of prison states, recently decried “stark racial disparities” in the way black prisoners are treated here. Hum. On the whole, I’d rather be a prisoner in the U.S. than a common citizen in Venezuela.

But the fact is that our country has basically put racism behind it. Obama’s the proof.

He’s the first black man with a legitimate chance to be elected president. That doesn’t mean he’s the first black man to run for president. In 1988 Jesse Jackson’s bid fell far short of the Democratic nomination, but he did manage to rile up quite a few people. Jackson’s election “would be the greatest tragedy ever to befall this country,” white supremacist David Duke warned. Duke even launched a counter bid aimed at blocking the Jackson campaign.

Today, though, Duke sounds almost blasé. Michael Crowley of The New Republic tracked him down recently, and Duke said his supporters “don’t see much difference” between Obama and “Hillary Clinton -- or, for that matter, John McCain.”

In January, Obama won the Iowa caucuses. The fact that a black man prevailed in one of the whitest states in the nation shows how far our nation has come in its quest to overcome racism. Still, it would have been reasonable to expect some racist backlash.

The Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Ala. exists specifically to highlight racism. Yet when the center’s Mark Potok studied the Web after Iowa he realized, “You could find people saying nasty words about Obama, but it wasn’t red-hot at all.” In the past month Potak has changed his tune somewhat. “The tone has begun to heat up,” he told Bloomberg News. But, interestingly, he wasn’t able to add any light to the heat by citing any specific threats.

Well, since it’s his job to highlight specific threats, it stands to reason that, if there were any, he’d be able to cite one. Apparently, in our continental nation of 300 million people, the vaunted SPLC can’t find one crank who’s written a blog post promising to take out Obama because of his race. That’s a positive development.

Let’s recall that, as recently as 1974, baseball player Hank Aaron received numerous, credible death threats as he approached the vaunted career home run record held by Babe Ruth. He was so nervous he kept his sons away from the ballpark. That’s an example of racism within living memory.

It’s difficult to even imagine something like that happening today. Black athletes and Hispanic athletes are considered heroes by many youngsters -- what 10-year-old wouldn’t want to grow up to be Michel Jordan or Alex Rodriguez? We need to look back and recall how far we’ve come.

As the Democratic primary process drags on through the spring and summer in a virtual tie, candidates Clinton and Obama (and their surrogates) are likely to highlight their gender and race, respectively. That makes sense, since each is trying to attract every superdelegate and those are the only traits that divide the candidates.

On policy, they both proclaim Iraq a failure and our economy a shambles. Both believe ordinary Americans can’t be trusted with responsibility and must be nannied by the federal government. Identity politics is about the only idea today’s liberals have left.

But the movement Obama started earlier in this campaign cannot be stopped. “He’s post-civil rights movement,” Walter Jacobs, chairman of the department of African-American and African studies at the University of Minnesota, says.

That’s where our country will soon be as well: post-civil rights movement.

All too often, those who benefit by promoting racism make it sound as if our country is divided into armed camps -- with blacks fighting whites -- when in fact race relations are better than they’ve ever been.

The days of government-enforced segregation are long past. The days of government-enforced affirmative action should soon be, as well, when we finally celebrate our successes and embrace a brighter future.

Depends on who's doing the segregating..
{ The days of government-enforced segregation are long past. }

Guess he's not familiar with the "Black Student ..." groups in many public colleges.

Apparently when blacks forcefully segregate themselves, with race as the *only* qualifier, that's OK.

Clueless Tucker
Are race relations really better than they've ever been? Tucker says so.

When Hank Aaron made the record books---34 years ago---I was teaching high school. A white boy whose father was a prominent athletic coach at another school kept saying "a black man should have known better than to beat a white man's record". I don't know whether he was parroting his father or this was an original thought.

I think of it lately because I hear, locally and online, the same thing about Barack Obama, basically that he should "know his place". A neighbor (who admires Hillary) suggested that "Obama should see that it's best for the country if he steps down". Any excuse will do: Jeremiah Wright, Tony Rezko, a paper Michelle Obama wrote in college (taken out of context and misquoted), secret education in a madrassa, true Muslim leanings, suspicion that Mrs Obama was overpaid in her job, questions about how Obama could afford such a nice house (doesn't that remind you of "Say, boy, where'd you get that there nice car you're driving and what are you doing in this neighborhood anyway?"). Obama must be stopped and bloodied and any excuse will do--- because having a black president is unacceptable to many Americans.

No, folks. I don't think race relations are better than they've ever been. Just about the same.

Have to disagree with you Lilly
While one can quibble about whether racial attitudes have improved...I say yes...there can be no doubt that race relations have made a quantum leap forward. For most of its' history, blacks have been slaves or suffered under gov't sanctioned apartheid. In a scant generation, a black man is poised to become the most powerfull person on the planet. To paraphrase Mrs. Obama, I have never been prouder of my country.

Rich
Please trust what I am about say.Looking at you,I can say categorically, that you would not want to be a prisoner in any U.S.PRISON.Also, the citizens in Venezuela are living their life quite well.Thank you very much.I know, because I have relatives there. They, like every country in the world are not perfect. We must realize, that no country has to impress "US".Rich, I would suggest, that we not make "Perfect the Enemy of Good".The people in Venezuela are not paying $4.00 for gasoline.Also,Mr.Jackson and Mr.Sharpton are no longer politically relevant. They like so many others, are relics. But,your article is just a veiled attempt to link the "BLACKS".People such as you, do America a great disservice, with your "Phony" attempts to sound "Not Racist".Yet it is buried is almost every article you write.Your credibility is fading fast,so don't be surprised when it disappears. It is your own fault!!You in PRISON,perish the thought.Well, maybe a women's PRISON!!!

Killer, having worked in corrections
for a number of years, the worst I can say about our prison system is that it is boring and staffed by many unintelligent and sometimes antagonistic CO's. It is, however, far more accommodating than systems in other countries that I am familiar with. In fact, I remember a case of a guy getting a sex change operation at tax payer expense to "enhance his self esteem" while incarcerated when I was on staff.

As far as racism goes, it has come to the place that blacks not getting the same results as other races is indicative of "racism", regardless of personal choices. In the alternative school program in which I work, "families" meander in , some in pajamas around noon, for the free breakfast and lunch programs. These same people tend to have many children, and as a result, they are poor. This is not racism, and this is common in my region.

In addition, I am biracial and have never had any problems at the hands of white oppressors- ever.

And actually, Killer
People don't "end up" in prison. They do things repeatedly to be sent there. There is a very good chance Rich won't "end up" in prison because he doesn't do the things that result in a sentence.

Would you be sexist by implying that there is something more ignominious about a women's prison??

I'll bet you are one of those guys who has pushed the envelope in every way possible but plays the victim card when called out. Newsflash: Society has done NOTHING to you, nor is it keeping anyone down who isn't lying there waiting to be carried.

I have read your post in the past. Therefore, I know the quality of your thought process. It appears, that you have an agenda. What might that be?I would NEVER play the role of the victim. My purpose is a simple one;have honest debate. When it comes to race,I don't engage in that silliness. My thoughts and feelings are for those who are RIGHT.It is not right to manipulate the public with slanted arguments. When I see such deception,it is my duty to attack it.Oh,yes I have had fun with the law,as a LAWYER,I do that everyday. What about that agenda?

I do have agendas- but it varies
on a case by case basis. Here are some typical and current examples:

* I work with a 17 year old girl who lives with her mom and her mom's current bf and his two violent sons (20 and 22 years of age), plus her two younger sibs. All on public assistance, oldest booy dabbles in dealing. For her, my agenda is the cultivation of a support network outside of her home, assistance with school work (sometimes over weekends) so that she can graduate, financial assitance for a college that will factor in her context and support her, and a safe job free of groping illegals (like at McDonalds).

For an 18 year old boy who was repeatedly raped between the ages of 4-8 by his uncle (who did a little time, but now owns an ice cream store), my agenda is to help him with his PTSD symptoms when they are triggered, go with him when he wants to talk existential and help him with his grief, help out with school requirements through advocacy, and help him make career decisions that work with his lifestyle.

Sometimes my agenda is to advocate for kids who are being made into life long mental patients or government dependents- however inadvertantly-by our mental health and social service systems.

You capitalize "lawyer" as if its something to be proud of. Ew.

OSW
You caught me!I started my career in Family Court.I was heart broken to see what adults do to children. We have many problems, in our society, one of the greatest being our treatment,or lack thereof, for the mentally ill. Most jurisdictions are now developing Mental Health courts. It is my HOPE, that a greater recognition will manifest in other places.California,Florida and Minnesota have outstanding programs for children and adults, that have suffered abuse. I would never do anything, which did not give me pride. The legal profession is a honorable professional. There are however, some instances whereby individuals have betrayed their duty. These conditions exist in ALL professions. We must all do better!!!I salute you and the service you provide. My PRAYERS are with you,and your CLIENTS....

Racing Ahead? Naaahhh!
What's happening is change, but not progress. White people have become much more accepting of blacks than they used to be. Barack Obama is an example of that change.
The racists now are the blacks, and Obama's 20 year preacher is an example. So is the reaction to Geraldine Ferraro's remarks. Right or wrong wasn't the issue there. It was the same old thing. Only blacks can talk about blacks. That attitude is going to hold back progress until it changes.
That isn't likely to happen until blacks do as Bill Cosby says and start taking responsibility for their own homes and neighborhoods and welfare. 1st generation Asians speak English well and get college degrees. Black children, whose ancestry goes back over a hundred years in the US barely graduate from high school and speak English as if it were a second language. That qualifies them for handouts, and perpetuates the same old ways. Listen to Bill. He's right.

Joe
There are MORE poor Whites in America, than there are poor Blacks. This is the case, even though, every president in American history has been a White man. There is no court in America, that will knowingly allow one man, to be indicted for another man's actions.Yet you have attempted in your Racist logic to do just that.On behalf of Mr.Obama, please allow me to say "Thank You",for not voting for him!

Yes
I am a 61-year old black American man and, yes, I have seen progress since I grew up in rural Michigan and am now living there again. I have seen this progress in both Michigan and in California, where I lived for most of my adult life.

There is still race-baiting from people like Obama's Reverend Wright, Jesse Jackson, Al Spharpton, Louis Farrakhan, the Neo-Nazis and others. I personally deplore all of this victimhood and race-baiting. (I realize some will call me an "Uncle Tom" for this and that's their First Amendment right, but I have the same right.)
Richard Brown
Michigan

Reality is Optional
No serious person would argue the overrepresentation of males in prison is evidence of a sexist society. The incredible increase in out-of-wedlock births and number of children who grow up without any substantive (positive) paternal influence is not due to racism. This is akin to blaming your obesity problem on the purchase of bigger pants.
Many of the problems we have are caused by the same tried-and-failed liberal policies Senator Obama is advocating.
I, like many other Americans, want an African-American president and a female president. (When Thomas Sowell runs, he'll get my vote. Give me the American equivalent of Margaret Thatcher and I'll vote for her.) But I am not willing to vote for someone whose policies will have disastrous consequences just so I can feel better that the alleged underdog succeeded.
Although Senator Obama has avoided playing the race card, it is still the trump card in many liberals' decks. It's a joker. One thing we can do to solve problems is acknowledge the negative results of prior policies. Neither Senator Obama, nor those invested in portraying America as a bastion of racism and sexism, seem prepared to do so.

Racing Ahead? Naaahhh!
Killer,
I'm not a racist, but you proved a point when you criticized me for making comments about blacks.
I would like to see blacks do something more than they do with their lives. See Dr Bill Cosby on this. Blacks have grown up in a country that lots of immigrants have just arrived in and the immigrants have done so much more with their energy than the blacks. Do well in school and you will be criticized as "being white". What a wonderful example to live your life by. Then you blame whites for your living conditions. What have you done to change them for black people. It sure isn't the black people who send welfare checks to the blacks. It's a white government. What have the blacks done with it?
The worst example I can think of is the blacks who were displaced from New Orleans. Amidst the thousands of white people who took refugees into their homes, there was the immediate outcry on offloading from busses about where 'my check is'.
The parts of town that they have congregated in are the worst crime areas in town by any standard. When do black folks get better? How much does it take for them to be honest and hard working? Some have been, but the majority are not. It's not white folks fault with all of the advantages they have had available to them once they were displaced.
Now Killer, I want you to notice that I never said that black people can't, I said they didn't and didn't like people who did. That's not racist except that I am a white man. In a non-racist society that shouldn't be a problem, and since it is, that is why we aren't racing ahead.

Joe
I often tell Americans,Black and White,to speak with a Psychologist.WHY?Because most Americans have buried their prejudices in their SUBCONSCIOUS.I stated;that there are more poor whites, than poor blacks and you gave no response.Your subconscious argument was, that whites were superior to blacks. Therefore, you could not equate to there being similarities in failure.Joe race means nothing to me,I am just trying to get the facts straight.

Racing Ahead? Naaahhh!
Killer,
I ignored your comments about numbers of poor whites and blacks because I consider them to be irrelevant and a digression and leading nowhere.
You have ignored my comments about blacks doing nothing with what they have on 2 occasions. Calling me names gets you nowhere because I'm not following you into name calling.
How are blacks doing with what they have? Tell me the straight facts.

Joe
Most blacks, those wanting handouts, are going to be angry with the following statement. There are many blacks, the majority I would say,are doing very well. However, the media and the democrats want people, like yourself, to think the victimization population is growing. In America, you can be whatever you want to be.Therefore, when one chooses to be; poor, ignorant, and uninspired, that is a personal choice, that permeates all races.Trust me Joe, the American landscape is changing, right before our very eyes!!!Good for "US"...

Racing Ahead? Naaahhh!
Killer,
You shouldn't spent time deciding what I think or want, because you get it wrong every time.
I am taking your comments as a tacit agreement with what I have said about black people, although I am not characterizing "Most blacks" as wanting handouts. Actually, I have no idea what the proportion is, just that it is too big IMHO. I have no opinion of the victimization population is, but it's existence is a bad thing for any reason.
Black people, for whatever reasons, take poor advantage of the opportunities available to them, and the black community says nothing about that, unless it's to blame others for their choices.
The choice to be "poor, ignorant, and uninspired" does not permeate all races or all cultures. It's a peculiarly black thing. Whites and Asians have a history of wanting better for themselves and their children.
Blacks want to avoid being white even if being so means that they are better off economically. Your right, it's their choice. When that choice changes and people other than the PC police and other blacks can talk about it openly, we will begin racing ahead.
In the meantime, politicians buy their votes with talk of government programs and greater opportunities. How sad! One of the results of LBJ's War on Poverty has been the permanent creation of a lower class of welfare recipients that is now several generations old. What progress! Naaahhh! It's a permanent class of voters for whoever promises the checks.

Watch the mental health, killer
There is a tendency to pathologize some things while completely ignoring others. Our child welfare workers can't make a "value judgement", so alot goes unaddressed until it hits critical mass. In addition, there is a pattern of people getting tossed into the dianostic hopper and emerging with the currently hot research diangnosis. Everyone's bipolar, clinically depressed, manic, etc...

Hospital programs tend to serve themselves and make the client fit what they need for reimbursment. I find most clients do well to avoid systems.

I still don't like lawyers! They are usually to be worked around as well.

Joe
I would like for you to look at the real course of events, that we now call history.Whites have been free from the beginning of our country. One must ask,if he is to be taken seriously;why are there any poor whites? The logic you use to explain the black condition, must also be employed to examine the condition of whites. What we have at the end of the day,is some people succeed no matter the obstacles. And of course, some do not. When we frame this phenomenon in racial language,we loose the opportunity to examine the cause and affect, that avoids such simple explanations. It is probably there, that our solutions lie.I hope you join myself and others as we explore the possible and abandon those paths, that heretofore have yielded little.

Barack Obama
is proof that white guilt over past racism is now the predominant way that Negroes are viewed and used by whites, let's call it benevolent racism. But benevolent racism is racism nonetheless. Not that many Negroes are objecting anyway, since there are many of them that are milking it for all they can get and the Negroes are terrified of the flip side of benevolent racism, as anybody would be, seeing no other choice but that between the malevolent or benevolent racism of whites. The danger is that benevolent racism can flip right back to malevolent racism in a heartbeat. Obama is proof that the Negro is still invisible as an indiviual to whites in this country. Obama is where he is because he is black, combined with the corrosive pity and reckless remorse of white guilt, he would not have had the success he has had if he were any other race.

Racing Ahead? Naaahhh!

Killer,
This isn't racial language. It's psycho-babble.
I haven't compared whites to blacks, which you seem compelled to do. I have compared blacks to blacks and asians. You know them. They are another race and an immigrant group. They do well in school and life. They have a culture that says you take what comes, like the boat people of Viet Nam, and overcome. Most blacks just sing the hymn, "We Shall Overcome".
It's past time to explore what might work. The path is clear and proven and allows no excuses. That's Life.
For what it's worth, my white immigrant ancestors came here 3 generations ago and succeeded from the first. They were fruit pickers who worked hard and boutht their own land to farm or for stores to sell their goods. And they weren't exceptional. Why do blacks get excuses and breaks and set asides and quotas, ad infinitum, ad nauseum?
Maybe they have no pride.
Enough! No more babble for me.

Free from the beginning??
many came here into states of indentured servitude, look at Irish history. "WOP" was a "without papers" Italian and totally discriminated against, the Chinese were slave labor, many Jews arrived penniless, eastern block people certainly came with no silver spoons... the list is long.

The difference in their current conditions is what these people groups did about their situations. If you value education and industry, its amaming how the results put the past to rest.

Slavery is still alive and well in Africa. Maybe it would due to put some energy into that.

In Search of Excellence
The civil rights act happened after I left college. While in college in the South a black student and I attended many of the same math and science classes. Although we both excelled he was simply smarter than I. I nominated him for president of our technical society and both of us soon regretted we had made such a move - I was labeled a racist. Later in life I was accused of being a racist when none of the engineers that worked for me were black. The requirements included a 1st Class operators license and all 17 of those who applied and met the requirements were white - never-the-less I was a racist. Right before I retired, the third largest technical company in the world (in their field) hired me to oversee a major computer development project, searching for 50 of the best programmers I could find, I hired a brilliant young lady from India - once again I was a racist. I do not see anyone 'IMO' who has the qualifications to be President. Now I guess I'll either be a racist or found discriminating against women or discriminating against the elderly. Life is difficult when one lives in a Liberal world!

Killer,etal.
Of course there are more poor white people than poor black people...THERE ARE MORE WHITE PEOPLE,PERIOD!! I hear so many times "there are more whites on welfare then blacks"..same thing ..THERE ARE MORE WHITES THAN BLACKS THAN BLACKS,PERIOD !!

When other people from other countries settled here long ago, they had no alternative to work.No one helped them, they had to rely on hard work and wanting a better life. They succeeded for the most part because they had to.

I realize others did not come here of their own accord and therefore,it was harder to make it.They have to admit, though, they have been given every chance to succeed. In my part of the country, they get jobs,if they want them.If they do not want to work,or cannot, they get government assistant.

What is needed is for folks to throw down the "CRUTCH".It is 'way past time to get off that
excuse. If you want it ,today, you can get it.The easy way out will get you nowhere.

obama is not black. He can't be. His mother is white. He claims to be black simply because he knows that if he claimed to be white, right now he would be an unknown.
This man has absolutely NO business running for POTUS. His "chosen" race has nothing to do with it. The fact that he is an America hating socialist, along with the fact that he has ZERO experience is why he shouldn't be running.

America has come a long way in the past 40 years. Unfortunately, racism is still alive and well. The difference now is that it mostly comes from blacks...and democrats.
