Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Politically, John McCain should be a candidate for involuntary committal -- he's a danger to himself.

If McCain is going to have a chance, he needs to run an un-McCain-like campaign, more negative than he'd prefer, more focused on domestic policy and less freewheeling: Think of a Republican Hillary Clinton circa this year's Ohio and Pennsylvania primaries.

McCain surely would be more comfortable running a race emphasizing character, national security and a few pet causes such as earmarks. But he has to leave his comfort zone -- something he may resist because he labors under an outdated self-image.

McCain often seems to think of himself as he was back in 2000: a political phenomenon who was the fresh face on the national scene, beloved of the press. A conspiracy of circumstances -- most important, the passage of time -- has seen all his former star qualities (and then some) assumed by Barack Obama.

If this hadn't yet occurred to McCain, Obama's overseas trip -- with all three network anchors slavishly in tow -- should have brought it home good and hard. McCain's campaign was reduced to running a Web video spoofing the media's love for Obama, echoing a plaint once made about the sycophantic coverage of McCain.

But McCain still has been insisting on bantering with the press in sessions that recall the glory days of the "Straight Talk Express" eight years ago, even though he often distracts from his campaign's own message. His campaign can't afford such ramshackle self-indulgence in these, the most trying of circumstances for any Republican.

A McCain comeback has to begin in a deconstruction of Obama as too risky to be president, executed in a traditional, block-and-tackle campaign (of the sort McCain has never yet been able to run). The playbook is partly provided by Hillary Clinton, who found her voice in lunch-bucket appeals to working-class white and Hispanic voters.

She did not, of course, defeat Obama, but McCain ought to be encouraged by how close she came. She too was a plodding speaker, drew much smaller crowds than Obama and was outspent and out-organized.

For a contemporary Democrat, Hillary ran a center-right campaign; she talked of blowing Iran to smithereens, downed shots of Crown Royal and appealed frankly to blue-collar whites. These mostly substanceless gestures conveyed a sense of toughness that endeared Hillary to her working-class voters and highlighted a vulnerability of the polished but aloof Obama.

McCain has a higher natural toughness quotient than Hillary. But he has never spoken persuasively to economic concerns, which -- for all the focus on the Middle East -- will predominate this year. As Obama dazzled overseas, McCain's campaign made a feint toward frontally engaging him in the economic debate, hitting him with a negative ad on his opposition to domestic drilling.

It is necessary, but not enough, to take these kinds of shots at Obama. McCain's campaign needs a unifying theme, and one less abstract than "country first." Here again, he should take a page from Hillary, offering a conservative version of her occasional theme of a "fighter for you." In particular, he should be fighting for middle-class Americans against ineffectual government and tax-and-spend liberalism.

McCain has to give voice to the anger and frustration of the American public. He has to complain that Washington is broken and argue that both parties have let voters down. In 2000, he was the feisty -- even angry -- crusader against Washington and the status quo. He needs to find that old populist mojo again.

The fighter theme would tap into the public mood of disenchantment with Washington and politics. It would suit McCain, who is at his best when expressing an outraged irascibility. It would be in keeping with an aggressive anti-Obama campaign. And it would communicate a certain vigor, perhaps mitigating concerns about his age.

But it must be harnessed in a tight, hard-hitting campaign uncharacteristic of McCain. This year, simply letting McCain be McCain is a formula for failure.

Agreed
Hillary, despite all her negatives, showed that she COULD carve white Democratic voters out from the Obama mystique in key states. McCain needs to do the same, with the added advantage of working Republicans. It's not much hope, but it's about the only one he's got.

A major disappointment is NRO

Over a short year, the writers from National Review have rarely turned in any impressive commentary for their public. That is my honest assessment.

Because I've been very close to NRO since Bush was first our presidential candidate, this newer turn of events makes me very sad. Nothing Lowery or Goldberg say to us lately is worth a damn.

Their negative position against the candidate of our party is extremely counter-productive.

Lowry is not such a gifted political pundit; and it's painful for me to see him go to extremes like he does here. He's attempting to attract attention of ostensibly conservative voters; or of his lucky readers.

He ought to stop it and lend McCain a hand. Offer some JOY to the campaign! We aren't all pessimists.

Try a better angle, Rich. McCain will soon become President. I hope you won't eat crow after November when America looks back on your archival squawking.

Interesting analysis
And exceedingly well written I might add. What it doesn't take into account though is the level of support and organization(early on at least)Clinton brought to the dance.

Also, to my personal suprise, McCain is polling very well considering the level of attention he's been getting from the media. So maybe he ought to keep on with what he's doing.

One lesson he can take from the Clinton campaign, don't underestimate the Senator from Illinois.

The problem, of course, is that

there's very little substantive difference on most issues between Obambi and McRINO, making it difficult for him to criticize Obambi about pretty much anything.

For instance, from the column, how can McRINO possibly ding Obama for opposing domestic oil extraction, when he himself ALSO opposes it?

And that, of course, highlights the entire problem with this election: we're presented with a choice between Liberal and Liberaler; Dumb and Dumber.

McCain has
the reflects the motivation of a mushroom in his speeches. Neither Obama nor McCain are presidential timber...if there ever was time for a third party candidate or a "brokered" republican convention, it now.

http://www.patriotsrevolt.com is committed to defeating both Obama and McCain

Three Steps
McCain can blow this thing wide open and, perhaps appeal to conservatives and a good number of independents.

First, drop the bizarre resistance to drilling in Anwar. It's inconsistent with offshore drilling, 75% of country wants it, and he needs to beat Obama to the punch. McCain can cream Obama on energy (and, in effect, the economy) because Obama is crippled by Democratic resistance to almost everything by make-believe solutions and rubbing two sticks together.

Second, McCain needs to go to San Francisco, sit down with that woman who lost a husband and two sons to murder by an illegal alien, and get religion. I realize that this is unlikely, but he can kill Obama by taking a law-and-order stance on illegal immigration. Conservatives want it and so do independents. Nobobody is paying attention to this issue because neither is hard-nosed about it. This is McCain's wedge issue for 2008--round 'em up and send 'em home. It's a domestic security issue.

Third, I'm not military strategist, but I'm not so sure Obama is wise to insisting on immediately moving troops from Iraq to Afghanistan. Has it been determinted by the military leaders that that surge approach used in Iraq will work in Afghanistan? My understanding is that it's a hell-hole (ask the Russians), and I've read at least one place where it's wiser to try to knock the Taliban and AQ with special forces brigades. I don't know, but I get the impression that Obama is being hasty sending a lot of troops into Afghanistan. McCain could show some wisdom here, making Obama look like a rookie.

Those three things and Obama's left with his 35% of hard-core Kool Aid drinkers and Democrats are left scratching their heads again.

Name your wife as VP

OVERHAUL IN ST. PAUL-DUMP MCAMNESTY NOW!
McAmnesty is a pathetic candidate and needs to be dumped. Dedicated to the elimination of American jobs with his globalist neo-con sellout fraud trade mentality, the continued devastation of our country from his 30 MILLION illegal aliens and terrorists flooding across his unconstitutional open borders and his North American Union, "more wars, many more wars," "I'm gonna draft ya, ya little jerk," along with his physical problems, superstitions, and gambling addiction, as well as his total lack of understanding economics as a lifelong government employee, render him out of touch with the vast majority of Americans.

McAmnesty was "nominated" by hoards of crossover liberals bussed into New Hampshire, the division of conservative vote amongst the conservative candidates in South Carolina, and illegal aliens and crossover liberals in Florida, all the way being endorsed by the liberal establishment media since he is the "Republican" most likely to lose the general election. HE DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH PLEDGED DELEGATES TO WIN ON THE FIRST BALLOT! Wake up Republicans or McAmnesty will do the impossible--in a right-of-center country, lose to a confirmed socialist.

Who's in charge around here?
Sam from Ohio is right about three steps. If McCain would adopt a consistent position about drilling and energy, that would attract alot of voters and be good for the country in the process.
Going to SF and talking to the relatives of the people who were killed by the illegal would be huge. That would be huge and would be a good putdown of Speaker Pelosi. Adopting a position that a bipartisan majority of the country has consistently wanted should be a no brainer. It's absolutely disengeneous to say that amnesty is a principled position. If it were, it wouldn't trample over the rights of so many others. It also implies that the majority of the country mentioned above are unprincipled.
If he just makes those two changes and continues to plod on about Iraq and Afghanistan, McCain will walk all over Obama despite the media. His lack of adaptability just baffles me.
A good VP candidate would be a help, too. I see in the Townhall poll that Michael Steele, despite absolutely no mention in the media, was checked by 10% of the respondents. He would be a great candidate, one with some abilities other than getting a few votes on some specific geographic location, and would give those wanting diversity a real choice. The rest appear to be as unqualified as Obama to hold any position.
Whatever happens in November, the grassroots can be the decider. McCain is campaigning almost in absentia. The leadership in Congress has told the members that they are on their own this time. Considering their lack of leadership abilities, that should be a blessing. The RNC is doing nothing of notice. Bush continues to serve best as an obstacle. I'm just hoping for an adult to step forward and take charge.

McLame IS A LOSER
We can't win with this fool. His age really comes into place in that he WILL NOT listen to anybody but his McLame loser friends. As for DREADNaught in California, you're the one with your head in the sand. I couldn't get excited for McLame if I were drugged.

He needs to really dig into Obama's inexperience. I mean, when this guy is off the teleprompter, he's a GREAT target. He hasn't got a clue about what he's talking about. There have been so many gafs, lies, etc., I could win against this charlatan.

MSM has given us BOTH of these idiots.

plenty of BS here today

McCain's campaign is going surprisingly well when it's considered the enormous advantages Obama has enjoyed all year. Obama OUGHT to be miles ahead in the polls. Instead he's treading water and wasting money by the truckloads.

As for McCain being dumped during our GOP convention, that's a non-starter.

He'll easily receive the nomination. He's the ONLY Republican with enough national clout to upset the Siamese Cat Who Walks Like a Man. Excepting for Giuliani (a social radical liberal) other candidates are Born Losers. The delegates all realize this. They'll take him all the way to the White House.

A word to Iowa Pat N,

It's immediately clear why you disparage McCain. At every opportunity you're calling him McAmnesty. You never stop. Since this knee-jerk reflex is your trade mark; I have to assume you're only interested in deporting 12 million peons back to Mexico. That's why you hate the GOP candidate. He won't bow to your wishes. I hear the voice --and I pity the fool from Iowa.

we have our own elitist

I thought Obama was the elitist.

Here we have our own; and with a large ego. He calls him/herself "Just A Thinker."

He could've fooled me. After thinking straight for 70 years, I came here to be accused of having my "head in the sand" by a boob.

Because I haven't joined in his chorus and lambasted McCain, I must be "excited" about "McLame."

Think again, Just a Thinker. I have HOPES for MCain; and I support him. YOU are the excited boob who doesn't understand politics at all.

You think politics is easy for one reason. You never won public office. For such a "Thinker" you haven't become a candidate for President. Or have you?

You know all the answers, don't you?

Oh? you don't. But you have a forum now, in which to act pizt off at REAL men ! What a show-off! You, my dumb friend, are living in an IVORY TOWER.

Release of McAmnesty's Military Records?
Dread Nothing:

For the record, I agree with the enlighted Californian, "Just a Thinker," that the liberal establishment media is responsible for dumping two of the worst Presidential candidates in our history on us this year. I am voting for the Constitution Party, America First Republicans, and Blue Dog Democrats in hopes of saving our country from the globalist loser that wins.

Also for the record, my greatest concern is that "war hero" and "national security expert" McAmnesty (called "Songbird" by his captors) refuses to release his military records. And I don't mean a censored version the Friday night before Labor Day weekend like he did with his medical records. What's to hide?

It takes a lot of nerve for this arrogant little liberal Democrat (nearly Kerry's running mate) to tell Republicans and conservative Independents like me to "go F yourselves, my friends, I don't need you," and then come back whining to us now when his "friends" the liberal media, liberal interest groups, and illegal aliens who "nominated him" tell him: "go F yourself, McCain, we were NEVER your friends." DREADFUL!

reply to Iowa Pat N

Maybe we'll yet see those medical records. Keep your shirt on. BTW, I know no veteran by the name of "McAmnesty." You aren't speaking of Senator McCain, are you? The Vietnam POW of great renown?

He's not an arrogant little Democrat Liberal. He wasn't almost Kerry's "running mate," --those are stupid figments of your imagination. --I have to repeat:

YOU only have one bone to pick with him. He hasn't conceded to your hearts' desire-- evicting and evacuating all the Mexicans. You're a white supremacist blowhard; who thinks candidates are only there for the racist agenda they insist on for our country. We can thank God you have only ONE vote.

Send it down the political toilet --voting for your stupid 3rd party. Nobody WILL miss that racist vote.
