Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Francois de La Rochefoucauld had a point when he said, in his frequently quoted formulation, that hypocrisy is the tribute that vice pays to virtue. In the case of John Edwards, however, hypocrisy is simply a way of life.

The infamous $400 haircut -- actually, some of his hairstyling sessions ran as much as $1,200 all told -- wasn't a freak embarrassment for a candidate so self-righteously devoted to the poor. It was part of a pattern so pervasive that it has become the defining aspect of Edwards' candidacy.

When he lambasted hedge funds for incorporating offshore to avoid or delay paying U.S. taxes, what could be more natural than that he made nearly $500,000 for part-time work at the Fortress Investment Group, with hedge funds incorporated in the Cayman Islands for tax purposes?

When he hit other candidates for taking donations from Rupert Murdoch's media holdings, wasn't it inevitable that it would turn out he had taken $800,000 from Murdoch's HarperCollins for a coffee-table book?

Or when he attacked subprime lenders for foreclosing on victims of Hurricane Katrina, he would have $16 million -- half of his net worth -- invested in Fortress while it was foreclosing on a couple dozen homes in New Orleans?

Most of us uphold ideals that we can't meet, but liberal populism shouldn't be such an impossible standard. The late Minnesota Sen. Paul Wellstone, a liberal populist to his core, never had such embarrassments. The former North Carolina senator is experiencing a kind of toxic shock from his synthetic political persona.

In 2004, John Edwards was Mr. Congeniality, for no other reason than that seemed the market niche for him in the race. Today, he is the angry populist, for no other reason than that seems the market niche for him in the race. He thrived in the Iowa caucuses four years ago as the fresh new thing; this year he looks like a version of Dick Gephardt, the union-pandering populist with the negative campaign.

Edwards' anger has about all the heft and seriousness of a 5-year-old's tantrum. All candidates fear making a gaffe in one of the debates. Edwards has to worry that Hillary Clinton will blow on him and he'll float away -- like Mary Poppins with her magic umbrella, carried off by the unbearable lightness of his own political being.

If a paranoid theory were needed to explain Edwards' candidacy, there are two, equally plausible options. Is he a plant from the Democratic National Committee designed to make Clinton and Barack Obama look impressive by contrast with his sheer insubstantiality? Or is he a plant of the Republican National Committee designed to pull the top-tier candidates as far to the left as possible?

On the big issues of the day, Edwards specializes in can't-keep-his-story-straight contrivance. Democratic consultant Bob Shrum described in his book "No Excuses" how his political advisers talked Edwards into voting for the authorization of the Iraq War in the fall of 2002. Edwards vehemently denies it, but also says that he didn't express "the huge conflict" he had in his own mind about the vote, which makes it sound like politics played as big a role in his decision as his conscience.

On gay marriage, he said that he opposes it because of his religious background, but then explained that it had been wrong for him to say that. He now offers no real reason for his opposition. Surely, the hindrance is simply that it is the most politically contentious item on the gay-rights agenda.

Edwards says on the campaign trail that he can beat the special interests the way he beat them in the courtroom as a trial lawyer. Back then, how John Edwards lived and his past record didn't matter, so long as he told the jury what it wanted to hear. Edwards still seems to think he's in the courtroom, which is why he is so deaf to the jarring incongruities of his lamentable campaign.

the phony
I enjoy every article that points out that pathetic phony. I don't view him as a serious candidate, even for VP, if he continues to blunder.

edweirds
everyday this dolt proves himself not ready for prime time. It is one thing to act arrogant but edweirds is a step beyond, arrogant and stupid. But actually the missus clinton is not well served by these lightweights, edweirds and oblahma. She is lured into a false sense of security. She is acting more confident as she knows these two are no threat and the msm continues to prop her up. She is courting the far left but assuring the center she is reasonable. She is pushing for more programs to assure the poor of her bono fides with them but still can't lower her naegatives. Even acting in a pompous manner with the edweirds and oblahma they are unable to land a blow. That will change cafter the primaries and all the attention is placed on her and the other two are old memories

Whoa! The Pony's a Phony!
who'da thunk it!

Hedge Fund Investments et al.
I'd like to know how much he made off of his investment in Fortress. Has he released his tax returns? If he had $16 million invested, he probably made $2 - 3 million per year.

And you know what? Good for him. He might stand a chance if his campaign theme was "I grew up poor, studied hard, worked my way through law school, made money as any attorney and got rich enough to park $16 million in a hedge fund that manages money for the university endowments, public pension funds and charitable foundations that help to keep our country competitive, pay retirement benefits and do good works for people around the world."

Instead, all successful people are supposed to feel guilty about their achievements. Except George Soros, even if he did make his billions as a...hedge fund manager.

Wrong narrative
You guys just don't get it. Johnboy is confusing his life with his father's. His father made it nearly to the top of the textile world with only a high school education. John is where he is because he stood on the shoulders of a giant. He's still trying to live up to that image. Unfortunately, for him, he keeps steping in the cow pies. Advocate for the poor -largest house in NC. Common man-$400 haircut. Eats @ Wendy's-empty restaurant, gay advocate-uncomfortable with Liz's gay college friends. Point inveitably followed by counterpoint.

EDWARDS THE HYPOCRIT
Edwards is the epitome of the limousine liberal on every issue that he espouses. He has done so badly in his campaign that his wife has had to come out of illness to take over for him. That, however, will not save him. His campaign went down the tubes long ago and is irretrievable. He will not even be a VP candidate this time. He would be wise to bow out and save money.

Edwards
thinks his pretty hair will win him lots of votes, but he is a complete phony.
His answers are rehearsed--of course MSM(liberals) provide him,'as well as the other libs' with the questions in advance.

vic
I consider him to be an unbearable lightweight but he may pervail only because the missus clinton is so polarizing that the power structure amongst the dims might prefer to take a chance with someone like him. They may think that the missus clinton has so many negatives they cannot overcome that any alternative would be attractive. The msm and the left may fully be entranced by both their hatred of president bush and their desire to capture the white house that they may not be willing to spend another 8 years in the wilderness by gambling on missus clinton and all the negatives she presents

John Edwards
I have always used the word "smarmy" to described John Edwards, and I see no reason to change now. This man absolutely makes my skin crawl.

Look in your own backyard
Maybe Mr. Lowry should devote attention to presidential candidates on his own side of the aisle whose stated positions are obviously more calculated than authentic. Mitt Romney's name springs to mind.

Rich,
are you working in concert with that she-devil, Ann Coulter?

smarmy
Rocks,
You couldn’t describe him better! He would do anything to get into power and proves it by going to the lowest self hating among us in this country.
At least I know he will never be the president but wouldn’t mind him being the Dem nominee. He can’t win but unfortunately the Dem’s no it so will never get even close to the ticket.

I understand the support for Hillary,
for Barack--but how could anyone in their right mind and not being paid by the Edwards campaign support this guy. Remember how he took millions of $'s off shore and then brought it back in to save the medicare 2.9%. It was legal, and I support anyone who does it except someone who talks about tax cuts for the rich, gets $400 haircuts, builds the biggest house in NC, joins a hedge fund to 'learn' about poverty. I don't like to call names but if you believe in this guy you are not smart. There are 2 or 3 better democratic candidates. John Kerry would be president( and saved us from the 2nd Bush term) if he chose a suitable running mate. His campaign theme is "2 Americas". Unfortunately for him and fortunate for us, neither America will vote for him.
As an aside, I am not impressed with Elizabeth. Never have been since she talked about the relationship betwween Lynn Cheney and her daughter. It was the single sleaziest thing said in the last campaign. She spouts off now as if her illness makes her bulletproof. It seems to validate Ann Coulter's story about the Jersey girls and Cindy Sheehan. Proving Ann Coulter true is probably not her purpose, but it does that better than it helps John. He looks pathetic when he sends her out to be his attack dog.

Reelection
Doesn't anyone remember that he wasn't given a chance to be reelected Senator before he decided to throw himself into national poticis?

johninoregon
All presidential candidates are getting plenty of attention, don't worry. In fact, they're getting so much that attempts to sidetrack a discussion of one by screaming "What about the other guy!" just don't cut it.

Sorry johninoregon,
but the things that you lefties turn a blind eye to shows me how pathetic the Democratic Party has become.

The Rich
Aren't these the people that always label the "rich" as evil, and somehow stole their money? All of them should be giving it away.

Littel Johnny also bought oil stock in 2002 he bought stock in Chevron/Texaco and Exxon/Mobil.
(2003 Senate Public Financial Disclosure).

He also set a coproation where he was the only employee in 1995. He paid himself a salary of about $600,000. He had collected 5 million in dividends from his corp. Edwards was required to pay Medicare taxes on his salary, but under his arraingement he wasn't required to pay Medicare taxes on his corporate dividends. He in essence avoided payroll taxes.

Yeah, man of the people, as a liberal he should be paying the maximum in taxes and be happy to do it. Hypocritical sack of excrement.

Just the other day I heard yet
another couple of choice statements by Edwards. The first one was when someone in the audience asked him about Cuban health care.
His response was that he was not familiar with the Cuban system, and was it government controlled?

The second was his statement that America should provide an "emergency fund" (translation=more tax dollars) to "help" people who are unable to keep their homes from foreclosure (the same people that probably should never have received home loans in the first place given their financial histories.)

Note two things: 1)he and his cancer stricken wife do not seek Cuban medical care and 2)he is not donating any of his millions to "help" people keep their homes in the event of foreclosure. This man is a complete and utter embarrassment running for President of this country.

He isn't even that good looking
From his sickening Southern accent to his phony baloney populism, the guy is a joke. And how pathetic and obvious is it to send his seriously ill wife out on the attack? It's embarassing to see her mixing it up with other women, like some kind of cat fight.

On a purely physical basis...I think he is the kind of man that a lot of men assume is attractive to women, just like GHWB thought Dan Quayle was a good-looking guy. Maybe it's a reflection of my own lack of attraction to fair-haired men, but, in my opinion, neither strongly appeals to women because both lack the dark coloring, deep voice, and thick-skinned masculinity of a Sean Connery or George Clooney (never mind his politics) that have wide-spread appeal to women.

The perfect logo
The perfect logo for the Edwards' campaighn: My Liitle Pony with the long mane you can comb.

The Ick Factor
I think I need to see a doctor. I'm a Republican, I live in the South and I actually think Hillary Clinton is more likeable than John Edwards (who reminds me of that Greg Stillson politician character in the TV show, The Dead Zone). When you have a posse of consultants telling you what to do, what to say (and that doesn't include his wife) and how to look and yet you still have the "ick" factor going for you, then I say, go back to being a lawyer where "ick" is worn like a badge of honor.

Edwards
I know this isnt any of my business but i couldnt help but notice that a while back when Mr and Mrs Edwards had a press conference to anounce her cancer, they literally stood about 5 feet from each other. Maybe its just me but i would have had my arm around her. Even if they arent touchy feely as a pol wouldnt you have tried to fake it?

What's the Difference
If you reviewed all the Demonrats running for the POTUS, none of them are qualified. All of them are Socialists, Fascists, Marxists, & Communists at heart. I don't see how anyone who has half a brain could vote for any of them. but then again, how could anyone vote for Gore or Kerry either, especially if they knew the truth. That must be it. Gore & Kerry got 49% of the vote, which means that 49% of voters have half a brain or less or they didn't know the truth. I wonder which is correct. Half a Brain or Less or not knowing the truth.

johninoregon
at least Mitt isn't beating his chest about how he is the only one that cares about the po' people! Mitt actually ran an investment bank- the lame Breck Girl should stick to chasing ambulances...

Edwards
I think I'd vote for Osama before I'd vote for this sick fraudulant hypocrite. He makes HRC look serious in comparison.

Elizabeth is a huge negative in my opinion. Of course, I do not care for John Edwards so her words and actions don't bother me. All it does is show what a low-class act the two of them are...regardless of how much $$$ they have or how big their home is!

Having this man run for public office has hopefully opened many eyes as to the "badge of honor" - ICK indeed!

Seems like these two are trying to replicate the two-for-one offer of the Clintons! I agree with you, I didn't notice much caring exhibited during that PR event. The whole news conference was so contrived...remember how they postponed it repeatedly to build up the suspense...da da da

It certainly shows their real interest - and family seems to come in last.

Integrity in Journalism
A simple line explaining that Rich Lowry is a shil for conservative ideology would spare readers the delusion that he is fair and balanced.

I hope to see him rant and rave about Rudy Giuliani, a highly paid consultant for Big Pharma and other corporate entities involved in deceptive and injurious business practices. John Edwards should have divested his Fortress holdings and ultimately did. Rudy Giuliani is unabashedly a tool for dangerous drug manufacturers and firms fighting the legal importation of less expensive Canadian medications for our citizens.

More importantly, how Rich Lowry has the gall to spew venom and distort Edwards' motives in the face of the worst President in American history is incomprehensible. Republicans should be ashamed of their blind stupidity for imperiling the nation by electing and then defending a man with no concept of the havoc he has wreaked and the pain he has inflicted upon Americans and foreigners with his stubborn, ill-conceived and poorly executed policies and cowboy evangelism.

tellinit
Before you people get up on your high horse, do you, at least read what is written? I mean, REALLY read it?? Everything Rich has written has been documented. There is no way to hide that kind of blatant arrogance! "The gall to spew venom and distort Edward's motives", I mean really. Show me chapter and verse where Rich lied, or even exaggerated, and I will publicly apologize on this blog.
