Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Is all that ails the U.S. health-care system that it's not run by a communist dictatorship? That has long been a premise of apologists for Fidel Castro who extol the virtues of medical care on his totalitarian island nation. Left-wing documentary filmmaker Michael Moore is reviving this Cold War relic of an argument in his new movie on health care, "Sicko," which premieres in a few weeks and favorably compares the Cuban health-care system to ours. Moore ostentatiously took a few sick 9/11 workers to Cuba for care. "If they can do this," Moore told Time magazine, referring to the Cubans, "we can do it." All that the Cuban government has done, however, is run a decades-long propaganda campaign to convince credulous or dishonest people that its health-care system is worth emulating. These people believe -- or pretend to believe for ideological reasons -- that a dictatorship can crush a country's economy and spirit, yet still deliver exemplary medical care. Cuban health care works only for the select few: if you are a high-ranking member of the party or the military and have access to top-notch clinics; or a health-care tourist who can pay in foreign currency at a special facility catering to foreigners; or a documentarian who can be relied upon to produce a lickspittle film whitewashing the system.

Ordinary Cubans experience the wasteland of the real system. Even aspirin and Pepto-Bismol can be rare and there's a black market for them. According to a report in the Canadian newspaper the National Post: "Hospitals are falling apart, surgeons lack basic supplies and must reuse latex gloves. Patients must buy their sutures on the black market and provide bed sheets and food for extended hospital stays."

How could it be any different when Cuba embarked on a campaign of economic self-sabotage with the revolution of 1959? It went from third in per capita food consumption in Latin America to near the bottom, according to a State Department report. Per capita consumption of basic foodstuffs like cereals and meat actually has declined from the 1950s. There are fewer cars (true of no other country in the hemisphere), and development of electrical power has trailed every other Latin American country except Haiti.

But the routine medical care, we're supposed to believe, is superb. The statistic frequently cited for this proposition is that Cuba has the lowest infant mortality rate in Latin America. Put aside that the reflexively dishonest Cuban government is the ultimate source for these figures. Cuba had the lowest infant mortality rate in Latin America prior to the revolution and has lost ground to other countries around the world since. It also has an appallingly high abortion rate, meaning most problem pregnancies are pre-emptively ended.

Other countries in Latin America have made advances in health without Cuba's vicious suppression of human rights (which, no doubt, contributes to the island having the highest suicide rate in Latin America). The way public health works in Cuba was nicely illustrated by the case of Dr. Desi Mendoza Rivero, who complained of an outbreak of dengue fever that the regime preferred to ignore in the late 1990s, and was jailed for his trouble.

As is always the case with Cuba, anything that's wrong is blamed on the United States. If there is a shortage of medicine, well, that's because of the U.S. embargo. But the United States is not the only country in the world that sells drugs. Cuba could buy them from Europe or elsewhere, and the U.S. embargo makes an exception for medicines.

The only reason to fantasize about Cuban health care is to stick a finger in the eye of the Yanquis. For the likes of Michael Moore, the true glory of Cuba is less its health care than the fact that it is an enemy of the United States. That's why romanticizing Cuban medicine isn't just folly, but itself qualifies as a kind of sickness.

A real christian perspective
What God hating communists like Moore fail to realize is that as Christian Americans we believe in survival of the fittest. The Old Testament is very clear as it tells us that those people who can't afford to pay for health care or other essential services were never worthy of it in the first place. Leviticus 4:27 -"and if any of the common people sin by ignorance he doeth things which ought not to be done and is guilty." Poor people are generally ignorant and continually sin, for example drugs and gangs, so we should not be getting all worked up that they can't go to a hospital to cure hyper ventialltion becuase they couldn't get their last hit of Cocaine.

When liberals harp on about the poor or those "beset by tragedy" they are at best lying outright and at worse, commiting treason, plain and simple. (For example, we all know that the real toll of Katrina was massively inflated to make our president look like someone who doesn't care rather than the greatest president we have ever had.

I am sure I do not have to repeat that this country could do so well without liberals or democrats. If Conservatives could run the country without their pandering, cry baby interferance in the House and Senate there could be so much accomplished and we'd be even more powerful than ever. Our enemies would tremble and we could truly accomplish our mission of bringing Christian Democracy to all the countries on God's creation. I'm not sure if I'm in favor of term limits when it comes to presidents like Mr. Bush either. If Roosevelt could go four terms then he should- we are in a war after all.

However returning to the topic of Health Care - ours, like everything else we do, is the best in the world. If you say otherwise, you might as well just spit on the flag and the care and love of our founding fathers. It is, and I must say this again, treason and anti-christian to make statements that put this blessed country into poor light.

Mr. Moore is no better than Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and his fate should be the same. If it weren't for all the liberals in our justice sytem his fate would be. Doesn't the Old Testament condemn people like him? Leviticus 5:4 "If a soul swear, pronouncing evil with his lips, he shall be guilty." Everyone knows what Moore suggests when he asks us to ban guns or impeach our president or now go to a health care system like that of a backward, godless country like England is evil. As right thinking, moral conservative christians it is our duty to seek Gods help in punishing him.

We should instead be emulating and trusting in the voices of people who should be elevated into positions of leadership. Voices like Ann Coulter, the late and blessed Mr. Falwell, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and especially Pat Robertson who is constantly persecuted by the homosexual satan worshipers on every news channel except Fox News for speaking the truth. You will not find a more living, breathing representation of the teaching of the living Christ than Mr. Robertson.

They are right when they say there are no poor in this country. Homeless people are just down right lazy. As financially sound, morally centered, right thinking conservative christians it is our duty to give these people a swift kick when we see them and tell them to get up and get a job.

One word about the oil companies. I am from Texas originally and have a second cousin who works for Amoco. I can tell you honestly theat everyone who works for these wonderful institutions of our great country is a a Christian man (and some women). Their leaders are all good Christian men who have families and who care. Have we not seen the BP comercials which show how much they are doing to help our economy and keep the satan loving, god hating, treason spouting, treachorous, dream world living ennviromentalist lying communists happy? When we insult them and qquestion their motives making the profit they need to do their research we hurt them to the soul and we are no better than Moore. My husband makes a good income and I am proud to share it with these blessed people when I fill up my tank with premium gasoline. I trust and believe in them, just like our president does. People on here who have been calling themselves conservatives and calling for profits to be eliminated are wolves in sheeps clothing. These CEOs are good and honest men. The bible itself said in Leviticus 6:29. "All the males among the priests shall eat thereof, it is most holy." I think that above all other arguments, makes my point.

Cuban health care works only for the sel
"Cuban health care works only for the select few":
Don't know about Cuba or Moore but it is no different here! I had health insurance when I did not need it (and still don't)but I'm old now and retired (kinda)so it won't be long until I do. Quality health care is not available to all of us and if something happens to me well i will just have to die I guess. The health care industry in this country is embarrassing. We once had affordable health care when even the most menial job provided for you and your family.
We should all be embarrassed.
