Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

There are four words that even the most devoted Clinton haters probably never want to have to utter again -- the Rose Law Firm. And there is one word that, after eight years, even the most committed Bush haters will grow tired of -- Halliburton.

The Rose Law Firm was Hillary Clinton's firm back in Arkansas that was the focus of a little criminal activity and a lot of obsessive right-wing conspiracy-mongering. Halliburton is the former Dick Cheney energy firm that Democrats in Congress will spend the next two years investigating and that has been a swear word for Bush critics all along. Both entities represent, more than anything else, the putrid partisanship and malicious monomania that have characterized the 14, going on 16, years of the Clinton-Bush era.

After all this, who doesn't hunger for a clean break? Thus the energy behind the possible presidential bid of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama. He is the only presidential candidate from either party about whom there is a palpable excitement. And that is because everything about him says, "I'm not a Bush, I'm not a Clinton, and can we please talk about something else?"

It will be manifestly good for the country if it elects a president in 2008 who doesn't elicit yowling hatred from the other side. Hillary Clinton probably will, and that's a mark against her. Perhaps there's an element of blackmail here, as if conservatives are saying, "Don't nominate her, because we'll hate her but good." But even on the left there's a certain weariness with Clinton. A liberal friend of mine says when he mentions Hillary in the course of talking about 2008 to audiences, there's always skeptical grumbling in the room. Some liberals don't think she can win; others think she compromises too much.

Hillary would have formidable assets in a 2008 race, but the timing could be against her. Maybe it's too soon for another Clinton in presidential politics. On the Republican side, the most talented and accomplished Republican officeholder in the country, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, is sitting '08 out precisely because of the baggage that currently attaches to his last name.

At the moment, nothing but sweetness and light attach to the last name Obama. Skeptics note that he is a creation of the media, as if this speaks badly of him. Most politicians would spend millions and go through every exertion to be so created by the media. The more serious, related objection is that Obama has no record of accomplishment during his two-year stint in the Senate. There's a political trade-off here, though. By the time he does anything in the Senate, he will probably be thoroughly acclimated to the institution, making him just as unappealing as the dozen other senators who consider running for president every four years.

The genius of Obama is that he has a pure liberal voting record -- a 100 percent rating from the liberal Americans for Democratic Action in 2005 -- at the same time he appeals to independents and avoids seeming noxiously partisan. No doubt, some of this sheen will be lost the day he were to announce for president. But it also reflects something real. Obama is willing to say that Republicans are wrong, not evil -- a very basic concession that nonetheless takes some bravery in the blog-besotted fever swamp that is much of the left right now. He has shown that he can speak the language of religious believers in a non-focus-group-tested, genuine way. And he has charisma, an invaluable asset that can't be bought or faked.

In the 1990s, the phrase "move on" became a way to try to keep President Clinton from suffering any consequences from the Lewinsky affair. Then, it became the name for the Bush-loathing outfit MoveOn.org, which carried the partisan warfare of the 1990s into this decade. Among the public, there is much sentiment in favor of actually moving on, creating Barack Obama's opening on the national stage.

You're really off the subject of my post, which was about the viability of Obama as a presidential candidate. But since you have taken 3 of my words (ill conceived war) and turned them into a rant against just about everyone who disagrees with this ill-conceived war (including many Republicans, Democrats, Independents, military generals, and officials, etc., etc.) I guess I'll respond. I respect your service to our country, as I respect all the military -- especially those brave souls in Iraq and Afghanistan -- so let's clear that one up. I'm sure the many generals and other high-ranking officials who disagree with the war would be insulted by your calling them "girly men" -- what a ridiculous designation. As like the majority of Americans, I was all for the war in Afghanistan, since it made sense to destroy the vermin who were behind 9/11 (I was visiting a friend in New York on that day). So, I am not against all wars -- just the ones that do not make any sense, as we are now seeing so vividly.
Many patriotic Americans who are against the Iraq war (especially those who have served in the military) should not be called names such as defeatist, peacenik, historically ignorant self-involved ungrateful narcissistic know-it-all craven feministic Girly Men just because they are smart enough to know a losing cause when they see one. If W. had only studied the history of the middle east and it's volatile past -- if he had just checked (also) with his earthly father -- much of the bloodshed might have been avoided. Where are we now, with no military victory possible? Just more lost lives and more knocks on the doors by chaplains, Iraq in a mess, more terrorists than we started out with, and a memo from Rumsfeld affirming what we all surmised.
Think I'll sign off on this one, and try to absorb some Christmas spirit -- especially the peace on earth part.

OK, I've just about had it with this tippy-toe approach to dealing with defeatist pacifistic negative people like you, joyce.
W's ill-concieved war, huh?
Let me illuminate something.
Peacenick do-gooders have been against military action by the US since they yanked the rug out from under the military in Vietnam, so it came as no suprise to me that there would be dissent express when confronted with the prospect of toppling Hussein.
The critical difference is that you and your ilk have been saying we lost long before we started, and now that the dems, with the help of "conscientious" polititions and a hostile press, snowjobbed the public and run the show, the claims of failure have been coming out faster and faster. Whatever else the public was voting for, they didn't vote for quitters.
There were very few democrats and even less republicans who campaigned on a withdrawel policy for Iraq.
Well- they lied.
The avalanche of articles with titles and text which use as their central theme loaded phrases which are invariably negative at best, and outright saying" We lost, we are sooooo sorry, us baaad Americans need to apologize and get the he11 out now"! have become an almost non-stop ear- piercing screech.
Enough, already.
For those with whom this cowardly mantra resonates, here's a few non-juvenile names to chew on: Historically Ignorant Self-Involved Ungrateful Narcissistic Know-it-all Craven Feministic Girly Men, who evidently never had a real male role model to teach them the meaning of Self Sacrifice, Honor, Courage, Determination, and Self Dicipline, have been taught instead that true courage is fighting people who are not your enemy, nay, who are even willing to put THEIR lives on the line so people like the above mentioned intellectual elitists can continue to knife their own country in the back.
It's far braver to kneecap the government and the military when you know they won't fight back, isn't it.
Well it looks like you may just get your wish, oh joy.
The press is in a frenzy, writing history that hasn't happened, claiming failure that hasn't happened, handing victory to those who haven't won, and justifying the desertion of every allied country from supporting us in what will be the longest, toughest war this nation has ever faced.
In the name of tolerance, the criminally stupid citizens of Minneapolis Minnesota elected a muslim to congress, which wouldn't bother me one bit- if he hadn't made his first official act after the dems opened the door to congress to him, wedging the door open with the Quran.
The Quran and the United States Constitution are mutually exclusive documents; with virtually every single practice contained within a direct violation of the Articles and the Bill of Rights.
But it's legal, the Constitution doesn't address this issue specifically, so Ellison is justified in saying "It don't say I can't".
Yet the Constitution doesn't contain lots of things.
There is no constitutional seperation of church and state, sorry, but the language just isn't in there. There is no Constitutional right to privacy either. The word "homosexual" is not in there, and the word "love" only appears when adressing love of God and country.
In summary, just because I say so does not mean it's true.
Likewise, saying the war is a waste of time and lives don't make it so.
Gunny and I have served in the armed forces, and we didn't go into the military for money or career advancement, we joined up because we love our fellow Americans and the way of life our ancestors fought and died for.
