Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

How much do Members of the U.S. House and Senate make? Are they suffering as are regular people? Do they feel the pain of tax increases and new regulations?

In reverse order: No. No. And $174,000 per year.

In addition Members of Congress get a tax break on their housing, have health care completely paid for by you and me, and have a pretty good retirement system although the other benefits are so good you can't get them to retire much before their 113th birthday, on average.

That $174,000 is for the rank-and-file, show-up-for-work four-days-a-week members of the House and Senate. You want to be really aggravated? The Speaker of the House, who happens to be Nancy Pelosi, and who happens to be one of the wealthiest members of Congress, makes $223,500.

And she gets to fly home on an Air Force jet which the rank-and-file, show-up-for-work four-days-a-week members of the House and Senate do not get to do.

I do not mention this because I am particularly angry with Members of the House and Senate - at least not any more than usual. I mention all this because of California.

The California fiscal year ended at midnight last night, June 30. They ain't got no money.

California - the state which is held in such high regard by the Obama Administration that they just shoved through a global warming bill which is largely based on California standards - is more than in fiscal distress. It is bankrupt. Bust. Broke. Penniless. Insolvent.

Starting this morning - July 1 - the State of California is, according to the Associated Press "talking about handing out $3 billion in IOUs to everyone from contractors to welfare recipients."

In spite of the fact that the State of California is about $24 billion in the hole, state legislators still get a $36,000 tax-free annual expense benefit plus a $4,200 annual reimbursement for the costs of their cars.

Who pays for your car? YOU? Bwaaaahhhhhahahahaha! Run for public office, Sparky. Let the little people pick up the tab!

I think MULLINGS.com is going to start issuing IOUs to its vendors.

You think Blue Cross will continue to cover me if I send an IOU instead of the ever-larger check they have been demanding? You think Safeway will allow me to continue to buy my favorite cheap red wine if I present a MULLINGS.com IOU instead of an American Express Card? Do you think my favorite Exxon station in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia will allow me to hand them an IOU for the $75 bucks it takes to fill the tank of the Mullmobile?

I. Don't. Think. So.

Since 1789, States have not been allowed to print their own money - unlike the Federal government which simply buys more green-tinted paper then runs the presses 24/7 until it has enough to stimulate every real and potential Obama voter in the land.

Article I, section 8 of the Constitution states the Congress has the power: To coin money, regulate the value thereof … and to provide for the punishment of counterfeiting the securities and current coin of the United States.

But think about this. If I were a store keeper in California and a state employee, or vendor, or whomever walked in with an official state IOU to buy something … what would stop me from taking that piece of paper in lieu of cash?

I mean, the only thing which makes a $10 bill worth $10 is if you and I agree it is worth $10.

So, if Californians decide that IOUs have the value of whatever it says on that paper, then the IOU becomes … currency.

What if, say, Ford Motor Company decides to accept California IOUs in payment for cars? And if Ford's vendors say they will, in turn, accept Ford IOUs (based on the California IOUs) in payment for brake pads and carburetors, then Ford IOUs become, for all intents and purposes, money.

This IOU thing is really important, especially in the face of Cap-and-Trade. Think about General Electric, or U.S. Steel, or 3-M issuing IOUs for their carbon production instead trying to buy carbon credits for cash.

Corporate and State IOUs could replace Dollars, Euros, Dinars, and Yuans.

If you think Ford is good for its IOUs you'll take them as payment. If you don't think GM's IOUs are worth a crap, you won't.

The free market will, in spite of Barack Obama, prevail. Get me John Galt on the phone.

What's the address of those Nobel Prize for Economics guys?

Left CA
In 1993. Perfect weather does not compensate for idiotic people.

California, Here We Come!!
I make no secret of my Intense Dislike for the State of Ca and most of what it has come to represent, at least in my mind.
Folks, we are witnessing exactly what is gonna transpire in the rest of our Country unless we can put a STOP to this insanity currently in style in the White House and the Congress!!
I'm off to a T-Party or two tomorrow.. Join US CHEERS

talent scout, poorgrandchildren.com
AMEN!!

Enemies
We not only have an enemy in the White House. We have numerous enemies in Congress.

We have an enemy for all of us
In the White House.

I am convinced this man hates America and that is why some very powerful forces all across the world backed him and donated the money for him to get the TV time.

Knowing that millions of Americans actually trust NBC, CBS, ABC and CNN to report the truth.

We do not have a free press in America today.

Other than the internet and talk radio

We are doomed.
Rich Galen makes some very valid points. But it seems to be too late. There is a twisted agenda to completely tank our economy, and it's succeeding because most voters do not care enough to research the causes.

Unemployment is now approaching 10%, and they are still blaming Bush!

Considering....
That these political leeches get all this at expense of the American taxpayer, they seem to be the biggest welfare recipients.

Reba
My only question now is whether Social Security cost-of-living adjustments will help me keep pace with the new inflation.

That and the higher interest rates I can get on CDs (back in Carter's days we were able to get interest rates in the teens on TAX EXEMPT bonds!) might just see me through this mess.

Or not.

Don't joke about them quitting!
Hey, y'all, don't joke about welfare recipients quitting. Years ago (so long I don't remember the exact details) the Welfare Moms went on strike in Indianapolis. I was working and didn't get to see exactly how that manifested itself, but I know they picketed. Wow. Scary.

It could happen again, this time in CA. (As if traffic isn't bad enough!) Don't forget, welfare recipients have all the time in the world to wreak havoc; it's not like they'll ever be late for work.

MORE OBAMA LIES
Obama said yesterday that the Stimulus Package is working.

Thank you Mr. President. You have kept unemployment at 9.5%, not including those unemplyed who no longer are collecting unemloyment benefits.

Thank you Mr. President for not considering the energy bill that the Demwits in congress passed because I know you don't want Americans to face higher utility bills and more cost to homeowners when selling their homes because they will have to meet the new energy standards.

Thank you Mr. President for keeping the deficits down and cutting costs whenever you can.

Thank you Mr. President for telling Nancy Pelosi that she has to give up her jet to save the people's money.

Thank you Mr. President for going to Russia next week. I know you'll speak nice about America and tell Putin to shove it.

Where is lilly?
lilly is so fond of archiving comments by TH posters so she can throw them in our faces when it suits her fancy, so where is she today? The first few comments on this post are priceless.

WENDY says, regarding the IOU's, the contractors can simply quit and go somewhere else. "What will the welfare recipients do. Quit?"
Good point Wendy!

CAROL asks, "Do you think you could use the IOU's as payment for Federal Quarterly Tax Payments."
Great question Carol. I love it!
Tell us again, lilly, what a wonderful job the government does for us and how much we need them to help the incompetent citizens get through their day.

ROBERT just used his IOU voucher to pay his bookie and wants to know if anyone has a pair of crutches he can borrow.
Right on Robert. The honest contractor and the vendors get IOU'S but if you cheat the bookie, there goes the knee caps. Maybe we could send your bookie after the
California legislators and have him take their knee caps out. Perhaps it would help them to get their priorities in order.

And ROBERT is also worried that the welfare recipients will go on strike and move to Arizona. You don't expect them to take this IOU situation lieing down, do you? Hey, maybe if they had tried standing up in the first place, they wouldn't be on welfare!

Brilliant comments, ladies and gentlemen. Don't expect lilly to be throwing any of them back in your faces at a later date. They are much too succinct and poignant for her to grasp.

Thanks again, I enjoyed you all immensely!

I wonder if
Sophie, will, Vampire are enjoying their IOU's?

Bwaahahahahahaha!

POLLY - IN @ 12:13
AGREED. I was self employed during the Carter years when inflation went through the roof. Bids and any form of contracts were only good for 30 days because prices on products and materials were going up so fast. Mortgage interest rates went to 21%. Calculate your current mortgage on that figure. That rate almost brought a halt to construction and real estate sales. Unemployement reach 10%, we are .05% away from that figure today.

The young generation today that voted for Obama
doesn't understand the economics and consequences of hyper-inflation, but they will.

A Proposed Constitutional Amendment
"Congress shall make make no law for which they are sheltered from the consequences."

Most of the messes Americans are dealing with today were created by Congress and only exist because Congress was in one form or fashion able to escape the consequences. This is why the Founding Fathers conceived of legislators as citizen servants rather than professional politicians.

By the way, it's no accident that the most common occupation/education of congressmen is law. Think Chuck Schumer as the quintessential American congressman--pure sleaze and avarice.

ECONOMIC NOBLE PRIZE
FIRST OF ALL LETS ELIMINATE ALL FEDERAL CIVIL SERVANT UNIONS, ALONG WITH THE UNION DUES, BLACKMAIL, BRIBERY, EXTORTION FEES AND BILLS THAT ARE PASSED ON TO ALL AMERICANS. THEN ELIMINATE THE DEPARTMENTS OF COMMERCE AND THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION. THE COMMERCE DEPARTMENT IS A WASTE OF MONEY THAT ONLY HAVE CENSUS RESPONSIBILITY THAT IS ONLY COLLECTED EVERY DECADE, AND THE STATES CAN RECEIVE BLOCK GRANTS FROM CONGRESS WHICH THEY ALL READY DO FOR EDUCATION. CONGRESS CAN HOLD PUBLIC HEARINGS FOR ALL VIOLATORS OF THE ACT OF CONGRESS AUTHORIZING THE GRANTS.
THEN THERE SHOULD BE A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PROHIBITTING STIMULUS CHECKS, FEDERAL BAILOUTS OF ANY PRIVATE ENTITY,CORPORATION, OR NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION.

Correction
Rats!! "Veto-proof" should have been "filibuster-proof," reflecting the insertion of Sen. Franken. Oye!

(I mean, like this Dem Congress would ever anticipate a VETO from this prez!!!)

Grant
Not quite right, Grant. If I decide a $10 bill is only worth $5, I might raise the price of my labor or product to reflect that belief. If enough people do that, we call that "inflation."

If "inflation" happens and unemployment continues to rise while GDP falls, we'll call that "stagflation." Or at least that's what we called it during Jimmy Carter's reign.

And who doesn't long for the resurrection of Jimmy's "misery index"? What Democrat president with a (veto-proof) Democrat Congress wouldn't be able to bring that about?

Not quite right, Rich
“the only thing which makes a $10 bill worth $10 is if you and I agree it is worth $10.”

I don’t think so.

A $10 bill is worth $10 because the fed says “this bill is legal tender for all debts, public and private.” We have to accept it by force of law, no matter what we think it is worth.

On the other hand, your labor and product are worth what you agree they are worth . . . that’s where the devaluation of the $10 bill starts.

Politicians on Welfare
Politicians (including all the ones in Washington) are the biggest WELFARE RECIPIENTS. Repeal all INCOME TAX and let them work for IOU's from some PHANTOM ENTITY. No Air Force jets for them --- not even the President. The Air Force is for defending the country not for POLITICAL JOY RIDES.

John Gault
He is busying trying to get Dagny and Hank Rearden to live in his valley.

REVERSE MIGRATION
The Texas economy is still stable with a surplus in the Treasury, accomplished without having a state income tax. Gov Perry said 1,000 people are moving here each day.

There ARE probably a lot of Californians included in that group of 1,000. If so, please leave your liberal ideology at the Californian border. We have done just fine without your loony policies.

As for the US government, I suggest that we demand the following:

1. Term limits for congress and senate.
2. Same health care plan as they are trying to impose on the country.
3. No life time benefits.
4. All bills to be published in full to the public before votes are cast.
5. No private jets for the House Sepeaker.
6. No private vehicles for any elected representatives.
7. MOST OF ALL, congress and senate can not vote on their own pay raises. Eliminate automatic pay raises starting NOW.
8. Recall of any elected officials who lie to the American people. That would eliminate about 90% of them.
9. If Americans oppose a proposed bill 7-1, as we did the Tarp Bill, it can not be voted on.

AMERICAN CITIZENS - please do not forget we will always have the type of government that we settle for. IT IS TIME TO STAND UP AND SPEAK OUT !

How About Some Common Sense?

The Dow means NOTHING when the fundamentals SUCK.

Gasoline prices are UP.

Mortgage rates have jumped 1% in the last month.

Foreclosures are UP.

Commodities are UP.

Unemployment is going UP, UP, UP!

As I wrote days ago, the Federal Reserve is artificially keeping interest rates by ~9%. I garnered the information from a Sr. VP in a large bank that was a TARP recipient.

When Helen Thomas attacks the Obama Administration, you and they should change your Depends.

How is that Stimulus working out for you?

A constitutional amendment is needed . .
Any law promulgated and put in force by the congress shall be binding on the congress without exception. Congress is not permitted to exempt itself from ANY law that it passes.
This will make congress subject to any law that was ever passed.
Congress--welcome to "social security".

Seinfeld
Kramer: Jerry they just write it off.

Jerry: Write it off what.

Kramer: You know, all the big companies and goverment, just write it off.

Jerry: You don't even know what a write off is.

Kramer: Do You?

Congratulations, our country has turned into a sitcom. Happy 4th.

Rich nation
Economic liberals (as opposed to social liberals) keep saying that America is a rich country. Somehow that fact is supposed to justify changing the laws and policies that made us a rich country.

Compare the natural resources and standard of living in the U.S. vs. the former U.S.S.R., and then try to convince me to change to their system of extreme government control.

Speculation
You speculators preparing to invest in IOU futures had better not bid the prices too high or Bill O'Reilly will discuss just how evil you are.

Paying for the Frills of Government
I don't know why they global warming was set up according to CA standards, we all know most of the world gets snow and is not a tropical/ocean climate... but then we all know that government is not going to do without their frills and swills. I'm in the middle of buying a house... and I say middle because it's a nightmare compared to 20 years ago... they want you to buy a house/condo but they are making it as extremely difficult as they can while sitting back and sipping capacinos and appertifs we paid for and flying our friendly skies...

Looks like
Looks like kalifornia returning to the desert it used to be.Thought that was what the dire globalwarming libidiots wanted.

True 'nuff!
Well said, Rich Galen. You did forget to mention that little phrase on those Federal Reserve Notes, "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private".

I wonder what would happen if I tried that on my I.O.U.'s?

i

California Here I Come!
I'm in need of some good TP. What's left in the old wallet isn't worth much anymore.

All TH Conservatives
Is anyone familiar with Senator James Inhofe, R. Oklahoma? Two days ago I emailed him to ask him if he had considered running for president. I told him if he did to keep me on his mailing list because I would campaign for him and vote for him.

I became familiar with him when I was wondering about the chance the Senate would pass Cap & Trade now that it has cleared the House. In a Google search, Senator Inhofe had an article stating he did not think it would fly in the Senate, and that he would do all in his power to stop it.

He also spoke of other politically correct legislation that he opposed and it was obvious he was not afraid of the Main Stream Media, or anyone else.

Everything I read made him out to be a very gutsy legislator with leadership qualities. Not many of those left in the GOP. Read some of the things he has said regarding the most recent lame brained issues of the left. It appears this guy is the real McCoy, a true conservative and a good communicator.

We should all email him to encourage him to run for POTUS. God knows we need some good candidates and there aren’t very many.

Robert from AZ

I live in Philadelphia. Philadelphia used to be the 4th Largest City. Then the 5th Largest City. That was before Liberals came in and began spending money, raising taxes, and chasing working people out of the city.

Its what Liberals do best.

CHAULK ONE STATE UP FOR LIBERAL POLICIES
Liberal policies are detrimental to fiscal well being. Period. I do not want to be forced into the abyss just because California is. This country is getting closer to the drain each day. Obama's "dream" is basically a mortgage this country can't afford - co-signed by the country's youth, without their consent. He is a disaster. Conservatives generally do not immulate liberal rankor when they don't get their way, but to be forced to the edge by liberal policies, will foment resentment from the silent majority. Gutless repubs are actually smart by not supporting the healthcare and environment bills being discussed now. This should be owned by the democrats and if successful and they bring prosperity to the country, I will be the first to give my thanks. But if they fail, I will be the first to call for their banishment from any power.

Rich, unfortunately, the Nobel prize
isn't worth the paper it is printed on, and that includes the monetary award.

Bob
I think I'll invest in California scrip. If it gets low enough, maybe I can buy San Francisco. I'll also invest in U-Haul, because there's going to be a LOT of evictions.

California scrip
A market will form for the scrip. The fluctuations in the discount rate should be newsworthy.

Phoenix the Fifth Largest City
. . . in the United States. And why? Because we have a government that is moderately friendly (not enough) to business and moderate (not low enough) taxes. These businesses aren't all new. A lot of them come from elsewhere, and elsewhere is usually California. Let's face it. We live in the middle of a huge desert. Even so, business would rather be in a business friendly environment where a rattlesnake could die of heatstroke to the palms and beaches of LaLa Land. Keep up the good work, California, and Phoenix will be bigger than Los Angeles. If California gets the Big Earthquake, we might even have a beach.

ummm. Wendy?
"What will the welfare recipients do? Quit?"

To quit welfare? Does that mean get a job and support yourself?
Sounds like a plan!!!!

Several Of You ...
... have mentioned companies, contractors, etc. moving out of California. They have been doing that for some years. So have the tax payers for the last year or so if not longer. Arizona is full of them and so are several other states. It is one of the reasons that California is now in trouble. The taxes that Hollywood pays isn't enough to support the rest of the state. It is also one of the reasons the state has problems since the welfare recipients, etc. now outnumber those paying taxes when they vote.

Wendy:
No, the Welfare recipients are putting pressure on Obama and group to bail out California since it is too important to go under. Therefore those of us like you and me in other states will get to pay off their 24 billion in debt and support the new give-away programs their politicians have in mind.

What a lot of younger people don't realize is that we DID bail out California and New York City about thirty years ago. Why should they not expect us to do it again?

A microcosm here- a microcosm there
What do California and Honduras have in common? Aren't they both useful object lessons and cautionary tales?

Seven years ago and before that, California was heading to the point they have reached on June 30th. My friend's husband was always complaining to her then about businesses leaving because it was too expensive to operate there.

This Cap'n TiRade is the future economic outcome of unsound, exorbitant and destructive measures being masqueraded by Captain Hook as our only hope. (As in "Hope It Works?") It is the means by which the macrocosm nation winds up like the microcosm California-- or much worse.

Honduras had the guts and the Democratic Congress and Constitutional legal sense to oust their would-be dictator, Zeyala. Perhaps the only mistake they made was not to put him jail in their own country. IDK. But, if you read the real truth and not the gruel served up by the Obama Protection Agency aka the MSM, then you will see why Obama came out on the side of Zeyala. The cautionary tale here is that our presi"debt" supports something very alien to our democratic republic.

Anyone illegally changing the Constitution for the devious purpose of remaining in power is something we need to guard against. WE DO NOT WANT TO EMBRACE DICTATORS!!!! Microcosm Honduras kicked out the dictator. Macroscosm USA is staring down the TOTUS of a freaking liberal African Colonialist dictator in the making.

It is good to celebrate our independence on the 4th of July. It is good to guard our freedoms and resist power hungry politicians who want to be "more than a friend." (As Obama told the gay conference at the White House) It is good to deny Cap'n Tirade. It is good to not want to repeat the mistakes of California or any state.

Breathe free this 4th and let's never forget how we keep breathing free--- just as Honduras did. Happy 4th everybody!!

Wendy
The welfare recipients will go on strike. Seriously, some of them will move next door to my state. Thanks, California.

Who cares?
If you think they make too much, try looking at the packages of firemen, police, sheriffs and public service employees. Had I known it was that sweet, I would have become a cop. I have friends about to retire at age 52 with 60k a year for the rest of their lives plus health benefits, he is a sheriff. I tell you, the real money is in the pension and health benefits they have plus all the overtime. When a fire breaks out, they all go nuts because they know they will make thousands in OT and live like kings on the fires...its a scam and we pay for it. Don't even start with the prison systems....

Will California gov't accept them?
If the state legislature won't accept the IOU's as payment for CA state taxes, then they (choose your subject) are worthless.

I Just Used My IOU Voucher
. . . to pay off my bookie. Anyone have a spare pair of crutches I can borrow?

to cheated vendors in CA
Do you think you could use the IOUs as payment for your Federal Estimated Quarterly Tax payments?

California

California is proof tax and spend government does not work.

Liberals support tax and spend government.

Self-correcting mechanism
The contractors do not have to take IOUs. They can simply stop working there and move elsewhere. In fact, many will have to.

What will the welfare recipients do? Quit?
