Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The climate change legislation raced through the U.S. House on a seven-vote margin, 219-212. Eight Republicans voted for the bill, 44 Democrats voted against. Those numbers do not bode well for any quick action in the U.S. Senate where getting anything approaching 60 votes for this anti-carbon energy bill looks dimmer than the inside of a West Virginia coal mine at during a lunar eclipse at midnight in December.

According to Politico.com, the bill

"will raise electricity prices for consumers by $175 a year per household by 2020, according to a report by the Congressional Budget Office, significantly less than the $3,000 price hike predicted by Republicans who say the "energy tax" will increase energy bills and the cost of consumer goods."

I haven't seen either calculation, but if energy costs rise, then the cost of anything manufactured or grown that uses energy - which would be approximately everything - will rise, too. That increase will be passed along to consumers which has to be added to the $175 per year hike in everyone's electricity bill.

The ink hardly had time to dry on the 1,000+ page bill (which was finished at about three o'clock on Friday morning), when President Barack Obama made the astonishing pronouncement that he was opposed to one major provision. According to the New York Times, the provision in question was "inserted in the middle of the night before the vote Friday, that requires the president, starting in 2020, to impose a "border adjustment" - or tariff - on certain goods from countries that do not act to limit their global warming emissions."

Democrat Sander Levin of Michigan said of the tariff against countries which do not embrace the whole lower-carbon-footprint deal,

"We can and must ensure that the U.S. energy-intensive industries are not placed at a competitive disadvantage by nations that have not made a similar commitment to reduce greenhouse gases."

Sounds right to me. In fact, it sounded right to the entire United States Senate when it refused to take up the Kyoto treaty because it exempted countries like India and China from having to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Senate then believed it put U.S. businesses at a competitive disadvantage and my guess is the Senate now will come to the same conclusion.

Nevertheless, President Obama said in a Sunday interview which he deemed so important that, according to the NY Times, he "delayed the start of a Sunday golf game to speak to a small group of reporters in the Oval Office."

Whoa! Check please! This is bigger news than the results of Michael's tox-screen. The President delayed his golf game? I need a moment …

… Ok. I'm back.

Obama said, of that trade provision,

"At a time when the economy worldwide is still deep in recession and we've seen a significant drop in global trade, I think we have to be very careful about sending any protectionist signals out there."

So, it's not only acceptable, but worthy of delaying a golf game, to celebrate the passage of a bill which will add costs to American companies trying to claw their way out of this recession, but we don't want to do anything which would level the playing field with our trading partners.

At the Republican National Convention in 1984, Ambassador Jeane Kirkpatrick coined two phrases which should be dusted off today. One was to identify the Democratic Party - which was virulently anti-Reagan - as "San Francisco Democrats."

Given the home district of Speaker Nancy Pelosi, this phrase has new currency.

The second was when she said that the hallmark of those San Francisco Democrats was their propensity to "Blame America first."

The provisions of this climate change bill will place great hardships on the very manufacturers we are spending hundreds of billions of dollars trying to prop up so they will begin rehiring American workers.

But President Obama seems to be more worried about hardships these same provisions would put on foreign manufactures. Wouldn't allowing them to ignore this cap-and-trade business lead to even more jobs moving off-shore?

Obama has taken the Kilpatrick criticism to a new level. He is the official leader of the "Penalize America First" crowd.

Waxman-Markey
Obama is right on the trade portion, but the entire bill should be killed not just that section and like the bill Bush signed and crafted by Markey, the energy bill that will force Americans to buy CFBs instead of incandescent bulbs, this bill is supported by the likes of GE and other large multinationals. By forcing consumers to buy CFBs, GE got the government to make consumers buy $5.00 bulbs over bulbs that cost 68 cents. It was rent seeking at its worse. GE and other large corporations are greedy and amoral, but they aren't stupid. And the credit scam is likely to earn them millions if not billions of dollars? Who pays? You do.

But back to trade, using this standard should the US put tariffs on those that have lower environmental standards? Should the US put tariffs on China which has a minimum wage only 8% of what the US minimum wage is? Of course not and the WTO would side with any country that filed a complaint over any such tariff as an illegal restraint of trade.

Akagi
Which is why the government should not be involved in business in any way shape or form. Other than to protect contracts and property. When you start doing all this you end up with GE and other multi national firms getting the government to make laws for what is good for them not to do what the customers want them to do.

A tax is a tax
A tax is a tax, there is no difference between "Cap and Trade" and Cinton's proposed old BTU tax. Unless ( fat chance ) every Country ascribed to this pie in the sky concept there would be no bang for the American buck; except the loss of that buck and much more in the loss of productivity.

Best things in life.

Under Obama, we will have the best Government General Electric can buy.

Remember, G.E. is only U.S. company still doing business with Iran.

Perhaps this is why Obama is going soft on Iran.

G.E. wants to continue business there.

Clearly Liberals support G.E. helping Iran make nukes.

Flim-Flam
Firstly, this entire Cap & Trade Bill is a sham because there is no such thing as 'Global Warming'...at least nothing caused by mankind.

If the planet's going to warm or cool itself we're not going to do anything to change it, I think some people believe we can effect some paradigm shift in the enviroment like what happens in a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode.

Secondly, the provision for demanding that other countrys meet a minimum standard so as not to leave us in the dust as far as manufacturing is concerned is the only part of the bill that makes any sense to me at all...except that it doesn't take place until 2020.

These knuckleheads that are worried about 'tarrifs in a recession' must be smokin' crack because if we let the rest of the world do whatever they want while we willingly tie our hands around our back, we're not going to make it until 2020 anyway.

Thank God this bill will never make it out the Senate....what a collossal waste of time.

Flim-Flam Redux
What is being done to the country while we are busy arguing this insanity. Human caused Global Warming is a Giant Red Herring. If the Senate passes this it will be a wholesale slaughter of Democrats in 2010. So what is being passed as the real objective? Is it Health care under the guise of saving 50 million people who are uninsured? That is simply another hoax being aided and abetted by the MM. This administration is attacking the US Economy on multiple fronts and it is difficult to see the grand strategy. Except to bring America to her knees.

Too Powerful
The rest of the world sees the U.S. as too powerful and they would give anything to see us fall. Obama and all the San Fransisco Democrats are doing everything in their power to see that happen. All the things that made the U.S. great are systematically destroyed.
Wake up America and write and call your Senators. Tell them their job depends on defeating the cap and trade bill. If you support it, you are ignorant or stupid. There is NO excuse for supporting a "tax" that will cost households up to double what they pay now for energy, plus drive up manufacturing costs or send manufacturers overseas. This is exactly opposite what we need to recover economically. Why can't the Democrats see that? I think they do. I don't think they care, because it gives them power and makes those that have invested in "green energy" companies great wealth. Impeach them all for conflict of interest!!

I guess they are now Chicago-Democrats!
With a big side order of San Fran Nan! As someone posted before I could, Al Capone was a piker compared to the One!

GLOBAL WARMING?
Here are the Goddard Institute of Space Studies' (GISS) (headed by the "Father" of global climate change alarmism, James Hansen) ranking of the 10 hottest years from the warmest to the less hot:

1934
1998
1921
2006 (An outier El Nino year)
1931
1999
1953
1990
1938
1939

Is there a trend here? If 1934 is used as the base, the planet has been cooling since 1934.

Concerning regulations
A free government must treat everyone as equal under the eyes of the law. Obama should apply his protectionist ways to every regulation in America. Regulation gives big business an artificial advantage since they can afford to work around it while small business can't. The only two fair ways that the US government could operate is to deregulate (legitimately, not the re-regulation wrongly named "deregulation" in the last 30 years) or to require the entire supply chain of all goods sold in the US to meet all US regulations.

"Confiscate the wealth and resources

..
...leaders present themselves as empathetic and benevolent ....as a ruse and are only interested in controlling all."

These are 2 quotes from an article by L.E. Ikenga: Obama, The African Colonial. Her theory is that Obama is an African Colonialist much like his apparent father and like Mugabe. She has listed a 5 point system detailing the attributes of the A.C. person in the White House. This reminds me of the colonialist comment he made in his Cairo speech.

1. Convince the people that clinging to any aspect of their cultural identity or history is bad and regresses the process of "unity."
According to Obama we are not a Christian nation and are actually one of the largest Muslim nations in the world. People are told to not cling to their cultural identity when they see themselves as Christian Americans.

2. See beginning of post

3.Convince the masses your upper-crust university education naturally puts you on an intellectual plane to understand everything even when you understand nothing.

4. Lie to people and tell them that progress is being made even though things are falling apart. Romer came out today with a statement that she is very optimistic on the economy and its getting better!!. LIE

5. Use every available media outlet to perpetrate the belief that you and your followers are the enlightened ones--and that those who refuse to support you are just barbarians, uncivilized , ignorant curmudgeons.

The African Colonialist can only become the despot.

Interesting article found at American Thinker on 6/25/09. There's more--see Joseph's comment.

That's the problem...
The problem is that we have plenty of politicians in Congress who think that the governments of other nations are willing to immediately play by our own rules. In fact, they are plenty willing, and even desirous, to sap American money from pleads, and get away by not living up to their end of the bargain so that they can outcompete us economically and profitwise. Not to say that there shouldn't be regulations - Phosphate-free laundry detergent made for better less severe water pollution for something that wastewater treatment can neutralize. However, the logic is screwed when we somehow think that the U.S. recession isn't also a problem. I want an alternative to oil, if something more energy-efficient such as nuclear-generated power and electric cars could come along, but that's not really in place yet, and the recession is still uncertain. Democrats even are finally getting some sense to understand that Jimmy Carter 2.0 is in the White House now, and a recession ending first is probably better than losing some seats in Congress right now. Either way, it's great to see that there actually might be some sanity in Congress right now, with 44 Dems against the bill.

"According to Obama we are not a Christian nation and are actually one of the largest Muslim nations in the world. People are told to not cling to their cultural identity when they see themselves as Christian Americans."

The US is not a Christian nation, though most Americans claim to be Christians. As for the Muslim comment--a mistake, the US is no more a Muslim nation than a Christian one. As for the number of Muslims in the US, depends how you count. It doesn't rank with Indonesia of course but as large as Kuwait's and is claimed (along with others like Wicca) as the fastest growing religion in the US.

"...Romer came out today with a statement that she is very optimistic on the economy and its getting better!! LIE"

Some things are getting better actually.

How does any of this make him an African colonialist? Comparing him to what Queen Victoria? Leopold the II? Cecil Rhodes?

The Kyoto Protocol
was designed with an eye towards hamstringing the American economy so that Europe could become competitive and to redistribute our industrial economy and wealth to developing countries.

Europe was (is) so mired in the quicksand of their social democrat welfare systems they couldn't compete with the US. They fabricated this entire climate change scam in the hopes that bringing the US down to their level from the regulatory nightmares that would ensue, would be a much easier task politically and practically than trying to change their own welfare entitlement system and mentality.

They also understand that although none of the current obligated signatories to Kyoto actually ever do anything to meet their agreed-to demands, environmental groups in the US will litigate to no end to force our compliance and the regulations will actually have real teeth here.

The same is true of this Son Of Kyoto they hope to negotiate in Copenhagen.

Where's Obama's Birth Certificate?
Well, here we are AGAIN discussing usurper Obama, as if he were a REAL PRESIDENT, when in fact he doesn’t even meet the basic ELIGIBILITY requirements to BE president (not born on American soil). It’s not a small matter of him not providing a real US birth certificate when asked by the American people, it’s that HE DOESN’T HAVE ONE TO BEGiN WITH because he was BORN IN KENYA.

Which by the way, makes every bill Obama signs and every THING he DOES acting as president, iLLEGAL. And pretty much means if we let this go on we are breaking the law right along with him. CONSTITUTIONAL CRISES!

Come join me and help put up another billboard around the USA:
“WHERE’S THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE?”

Mr. Galen
How did Jeane Kirkpatrick become "Kilpatrick"?

What is the direct object of the verb _said_ in the following sentence?

"Nevertheless, President Obama said in a Sunday interview which he deemed so important that, according to the NY Times, he 'delayed the start of a Sunday golf game to speak to a small group of reporters in the Oval Office.'"

Is Obama or the _New York Times_ the source of the nested quotation? Does A.P. style allow reducing two-thirds of the paper's name to a postal code?

Where shall we begin to analyze this sprawling sentence below?

"Those numbers do not bode well for any quick action in the U.S. Senate where getting anything approaching 60 votes for this anti-carbon energy bill looks dimmer than the inside of a West Virginia coal mine at during a lunar eclipse at midnight in December."

Are West Virginia coal mines darker than others? When is "at during a lunar eclipse"? Is midnight darker than 11 p.m. or darker in December than in January? Do you charge by the linear foot?

This column is in better shape than your last, but it still looks like a rough draft. Do you revise your copy? Does anyone even glance at it?

Sir, you are a professional writer addressing important subjects for thoughtful people in perilous times. Please act accordingly.

Excellent post. Thank you.

Akaqi - BULBS
First of all, the price of CFB's is coming down, just as all consumer products do when production ramps up. I just bought a six-pak for $7.96 at Wallyworld. Secondly, why wouldn't I want to use a bulb that lasts five times longer and uses 75% less energy? And please spare me the false horror stories about women giving birth to deformed babies after cleaning up a broken CFB... that, and similar stories, have been thoroughly debunked.

Cap and Trade
OK, 44 intelligent Democratic congressmen voted against the bill and a few idiot Republicans voted for it. This is another lengthy bill that the morons in congress never read but approve, never mind the great harm to the economy for extremely dubious gain to the ecolology. Where is the reasoning behind the actions of our Congress (and Senate) in the passage of such destructive measures?

They Don't Believe It Themselves # 1
If the US shut down all activities that generated CO2 for power or transport, it wouldn't change the total CO2 emissions significantly if other countries, esp China, power their economies w/ coal & oil, & do all our manufacturing for us.

China built 1000's of coal powerplants recently, & will use them. They have pledged to "cut" CO2 emissions, but their terms are that they go ahead & merrily burn coal all they want, while WE pay for carbon offsets for the CO2 from manufacturing products we import.

If the 'warmies' are actually right, then WE ALL ARE DOOMED because there will be NO reduction in overall CO2 emissions except inasmuch as the overall world economy is depressed by the USA's economic suicide.

If the warmies believed their own doomsday rhetoric, they would be more concerned with China, India, etc's intransigence than a trade war or WTO fingerwagging. But, oddly enuff, THEY'RE OK WITH IT! They just spout stupid cliched slogans like "Well, we must lead the way."

Is American CO2 more "greenhouse" than Chinese CO2?!

Is anyone fool enuff to believe that if China is not motivated w/ extreme sanctions like a complete embargo, they will change IN ANY WAY?! As was pointed out, the Kyoto Treaty revealed what it really was by defining a class of "developing nations" incl China, who were basically off the hook.

Hel-lo, if Chinese or any other socialism is so great, why can't it develop itself in a "sustainable" way from the get-go, instead of needing special trade handouts while spewing coal smoke like 19th-cent London?

And if the "climate change" situation is so dire, why are the warmies not screaming bloody murder at China? Their behavior is inconsistent w/ the Anthrogenic CO2 Induced Climate Change dogma, but consistent with the totalitarian control of the American economy & elimination of heavy industry.

By their own admission, it's bunk.

They Don't Believe It Themselves # 2
2 words:
"No Nukes"

No sane person believes we can simply do with dramatically less power w/o destroying our economy & std of living. (Of course, that's what the really wacko fringe wants, but the mainstream statists just want rationing, taxation, & control)

The only non-CO2 generating substitute that's going to be "shovel-ready" any time soon is nuclear power.

If they truly believed 'excess' CO2 is so bad, they would revise their intransigent resistance to nuclear power, get cured of "The China Syndrome," approve a waste disposal plan, & start replacing aging coal plants w/ modern safe nukes.

France, historically a much more leftist country until lately, did it. They've got fast-breeders & reprocessing, for gosh sakes.

They Don't Believe It Themselves # 3
Hey Al! Get some of YOUR skin in the game! Put YOUR hard-ready into some of the schemes you push.

The strategy for dealing w/ ACO2ICC has been expressed mainly in terms of existing electric utilities putting their $$$ into solar, wind, wave, etc, generators, & the vast new infrastructure they'd need to collect the proceeds. (that, & us simply doing with less energy)

Aren't there federal & state laws that facilitate 3rd parties building power plants, hooking into the utilities' grids, & selling power to the utilities? That's been how these outfits that build gas turbine plants to supply peak power have done it.

Think of all the super-rich leftists & green-commie institutions awash in ca$h they use for activism & overhead.

If they really think solar & wind power are viable business propositions, why aren't THEY investing THEIR $$$ on a commercial scale?! They could make MORE $$$ to play with, AND demonstrate they're right & wind/solar are viable. Win, win, win, right?

They don't because they know the truth, & they want taxpayers & ratepayers to eat the massive losses from their castles in the air, while they themselves keep truckin in their jets & limos using monopoly mon- I mean, "carbon credits," & making big bux agitating & selling wooden nic- I mean, "carbon credits," w/o producing 1 watthour of useful power.

They Don't Believe It Themselves # 4
"Ethanol"

We are being required to add more & more of this gum&rust promoting, moisture attracting, expensive, storage-life-limiting chemical adulterant to our gasoline.

Ethanol uses energy in every phase of its manufacture. It costs much more & uses more energy to distribute because it can't be pipelined. Trains & trucks gotta burn diesel to move it.

So much corn is already being demanded to make it, that the market is distorted & corn prices are way up. Corn is used in virtually all processed food now, esp as sweetener. Thus food is more expensive.

Furthermore, while a trade war to get China to cut CO2 is unthinkable (therefore CO2 will not be cut) why's there no problem w/ a hi sugar tariff that rules out using imported sugar to make the ethanol?

In terms of stretching or supplementing fuel, it's a net loss.

How is it that business corporations are considered so evil except corn giant Archer Daniels Midland, who makes out like a bandit? Congress seems to worship & adore ADM, & eats hi-priced corn out of ADM's hand.
