Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The Politburo of the United States, which used to be known as the U.S. House of Representatives, yesterday passed a bill which, according to the Associated Press, "Provides vouchers of up to $4,500 for consumers who turn in their gas-guzzling cars and trucks for more fuel-efficient vehicles."

I try to be as much like Members of Congress as possible, so I have not read this bill prior to my proclaiming my opposition to it.

The way this thing will work is, if you have a car which gets 18 miles per gallon or less, and you trade it in on a car which gets 22 miles per gallon or more you will receive a voucher from your government in the amount of $3,500. If you trade in a gas guzzler for one which has a fuel efficiency rating of 10 mph more, then the voucher grows to $4,500.

*** Special Offer ***

For SUVs, minivans, and light trucks the deal is a little sweeter. If your particular Hummer gets 18 MPH or less and you trade it in on a vehicle which gets just two mile per gallon more, you will qualify for the $3,500 coupon. If the new truck gets FIVE miles more per gallon, you get the full $4,500.

According to the article, the miles per gallon figures are listed on the window sticker.

First of all you can't take your … just let's say you have - to pick a vehicle out of thin air - a 1999 green Land Rover Discovery with about 140,000 miles and which gets, when it's running at all, maybe 12 miles per gallon and take it to the Obama Motors dealer near you to trade it in and make a deal for a 2009 pre-Obama Cadillac Escalade ESV which retails for about $88,000.

And then when you make the deal for the Escalade suddenly whip out your $4,500 voucher with a flourish and say "and here's the first month's payment!"

No. Doesn't work that way. If you present a voucher for your old car, truck, bus, or trolley that's all you get. The idea is that no one will trade in a vehicle on a voucher which is later than about 1984 because they can get more in a straight-trade. The dealer is supposed to take the voucher and your piece of you-know-what and send it to be scrapped.

Right. Who doesn't believe that a secondary market for crapola-mobiles will spring up to take these rust-buckets off the hands of dealers and immediately ship them (under the soon to be revised trade rules) to Havana where a steady stream of 25-year-old Buicks and Oldsmobiles will replace the Cuban national supply of 50-year-old Packards and DeSotos.

On the eve of the GM bankruptcy filing an enterprising reporter called around to some big New York ad agencies and asked, "If you were pitching the GM account, what would be your suggested slogan?"

My favorite was: "You own the company. Why not drive the car?"

lets pump our own oil! screw the cartel!Why give all our money to foriegners when we have the oil right here?

GAS PRICES
there's no need for oil going up,who's working? here we by foriegn oil by the millions of barrels and we have it right here.the tree huggers,green peace,sierra club,animal rights,polar bear lovers,caribou protectors say we can't use our own? can't drill,might spill!It's no wonder this country is going down the tubes with all the whacko's in our country.

Love my gas guzzler (s)
It takes 10 smart cars to offset my emissions from my Cobra and Camaro SS. Just doing my part to contribute to the myth of "global warming"

Heads Up Smart Cars!
I am welding a steel I-beam battering ram to the front of my gas-guzzling Corvette...

Your Obedient Servant

Keep it
I wouldnt drive one of these death traps if Big Brother gave it to me for free! The other problem with cars like the Chevy Volt is where do we put the kids? Wonder if strapping them to the hood would equal child abuse? Ill keep my old clunker that guzzles gas, Ill just drive less if i have to! Government stay out of my business!

Gumies
Soon this is all you will be able to buy.Govt.Union Motors.The govt. will do everything in their power to force you into a Gumie.Remember they have our money to ruin other car makers.

Frank
Tell me, can you spot the difference between giving huge bailouts to GM and just handing the workers welfare? I can, it would have been far, far cheaper just to put the entire GM workforce on welfare. We've spent $224,215 per employee to keep GM running.

Besides that, it all amounts to the same thing as welfare. GM workers will just go about busy work, sucking up valuable resources like steel, aluminum, circutry to build cars no one is buying, which is why they took the bailouts, no one was buying their vehicles in sufficient numbers to make it a valuable company. All GM has managed to do is pay people welfare to pile inventory into lots. How is this any different than digging and filling holes?

Besides, GM liquidating doesn't mean it will just vanish. All of those manufacturing plants are still there and someone else will buy them. Well, maybe not, the Norris-La Guardia Act keeps them from doing it. The prime culprit has always been the labor union and that law makes it illegal for employers to put into employment agreements that the employee will not join a union.

Our tax dollars at work
60 plus billion dollars to accomplish what could have been done on their own. Chrysler and GM in bankruptcy.

Hundreds of thousands out of jobs.

Who gets the money? The little people or big business?

Liberal Party
Tell us Frank do Nancy Pelosi, Henry Waxman and Charlie Rangel represent the middle of America?

This is the problem with the democrats. The democrats do not stand up for America. Even if we went into Iraq for some mistaken reason the result is 50 million Iraqis need not fear their government. We have to pretend we are the villians for the Muslim world even though a minority Muslim group held sway over the majority Muslim group. Any where else it would be a liberation of a population but not with LIBERALS.

The Indiana retirement funds took a position when buying the Chrysler bonds that was supposed to garuntee them that they would be paid first if they accepted a smaller interest rate. Obama said screw the people who's savings are with Chrysler give the company to the Union. If these rules of law can change why not others

It took fifty billion dollars of our money to put GM into bankruptcy. How much money do executives of Acorn get by the way?

Frank
You are a shilling for one of the greatest companies to ever exist? Companies come and companies go, especially car companies. Good grief, look back to the 50's and 60's. Henry J., Studebaker, Packard, Hudson, American Motors were all failures. We not only survived, we thrived. What amazes me, you seem to be willing to sacrifice the greatest country in the world in order to save GM (actually I am conservative and love the US). GWB said GM was too big to fail and go into bankruptcy. He and BHO plowed billions into GM and what happened; oh yea, bankruptcy, now we own it. I believe GM will still fail after the feds dumb it down and use it for their agenda, instead of providing cars people actually want. I also suspect you are a pretty bright guy; however your logic escapes me.

Shut up Frank
Taxpayer-funded bailouts DO NOT preserve jobs, only extend their inevitable demise--as was already seen in the cases of DoomPete and Gainers!

And it is YOU who are actually anti-American!

Frank
One question here: why is it all you liberal trolls feel a need to remind everyone in every other post that your so-called side won? Are you not convinced your "side" won? Or are you afraid that buyer's remorse has set in now that the electorate has gotten a good look at the clown prince Obumma?

In my day job, I talk to people from all walks of life all the time and the consensus is running 100 to 1 against your holy clown prince and his policies. In the last few months, I've met only one old guy that would admit voting for Obumma and the case could be made there that he is suffering from dementia. Now, if you want to debate issues, I'm all for that. But if you're simply going to spout your purported side's talking points, I'm going to ignore you because it's obvious you aren't capable of formulating a single thought of your own, on your own. Why do I say that? Because you insist on trying to pigeonhole everyone here who doesn't agree with you as being on "the other side" of you. I will tell you right now, as many here have said, I don't think along any one party's lines. I hold my own truths to be self-evident--that politics in this country, and the political process in general, is corrupt and can no longer be mended by simple elections. And this is the fault of the politicians of both parties who've lived too long and far too well on all our tax dollars while abrogating their mandate to "serve" rather than "screw" the People.

Obamas GM "Government Motors"
The Wallstreet Journal has an article today regarding how much the Labor Unions are in debt because they overspent to get "flap ears" elected. Now they are being repaid by their chosen one for the favor. This reason alone is enough NOT to buy any product from GM or Chisler Motors. I drive a Dodge pickup and have had good service from it but I WILL NOT buy another one. Hello Toyota, Honda (maybe Ford, I like Ford Products but I Hate the UAW). Also this is why "flap ears" is pushing so hard for Card Check. He needs more voters to stay in POWER!!!!. Our country is in deeeep trouble folks.

Never buy GM
Any right minded American person...which will not include the UAW hacks, should never buy a GM ever again. did my part, bought a Lexus last month.

GM's new boss I don't know anything about cars

Who will Obama put in as medical czar...certainly not a doctor

I email practically daily
I email the Big O and tell him he's not a king and no one really cares what he thinks (his favorite intro is "I think" I-I-I-I--"When I am president" yuck).

Don't buy GM or Chrysler.

Buy Gold.

Bork Sotomayor.

Go to teapartypatriots.org and find somewhere to demonstrate.

Still smiling at this one...
"I try to be as much like Members of Congress as possible, so I have not read this bill prior to my proclaiming my opposition to it."

DID YOU email senators, congress today ?

SO did you email your senators, congressmen today and every day:

NO "HOLY" way to all of the insanity

demand they stop all of the insanity!

demand that they restore every single one of our rights and 100% of our rights to self determination!

the list of NO and NO HOLY way is so long.
Takes about 20 emails daily.

BE THERE: resistance movement,

SO MANY OBAMA fires to put out.

I had to smile...

I had to smile.

Rich Galen writes...

~~~
Note to Rich :
MPH means " Miles Per Hour "
If my Hummer only got 18 MPH (Miles Per Hour), I would be very upset.
MPG means " Miles Per Gallon "
If, however, my Hummer got 18 MPG, (Miles Per Gqallon), I would be ecstatic!
Still smiling.
I would guess that not only do you not read 1000 page Congressional Bills, you do not drive much.
JULY 4th, RESISTANCE MARCH
Around the nation
and on to DC
Every auto dealer who has been "SHUT DOWN" had their business stolen and destroyed by the dictator need to organize their clients and employees to march with the TEA parties, the 912 projects, the other resistance movements;
BE THERE,
Get organized
Get your folks to "circle" the nation in a non violent protest.
NOW OR NEVER
it will only get worse!
Guvment Motors and union plagues
An urban myth: GM does not make cars people want to buy. Fact--> GM and Toyota sold the SAME number of cars last year. Why did Toyota thrive while GM went under (despite many $ billions of taxpayer funds)?
Strangling UAW labor costs at GM and Chrysler--> UAW workers make $150k/year all-in... for a H.S. degree and little-to-no job skills... they make half as much at Toyota here in America, yet line up for those jobs. The UAW has killed the Golden Goose, and is NOW simply moving on to bleed taxpayers.
The unions OWN the ObaMessiah! It is STUNNING to dismiss secured creditors in favor of unsecured claimants--> like the UAW.
The Chosen One is effectively subverting B/R law. Unions have killed the big 3, and they (teachers, public service workers, hospital service) have bankrupted Mexifornia-- which the REST OF US will ALSO have to bail out.
When you torpedo the rightful claims of bond holders, then future investors will be dissuaded from buying corporate bonds of any remotely troubled company-- which might serve to ASSURE further trouble! One reason that Ford is not yet on the brink is that it took on new debt (such as bonds) awhile back.
Federal workers already make TWICE what private workers earn; state and local workers make 40% more-- both groups of guvment workers are unionized.
Unions are ruining our efficiency and bleeding us dry-- killing the Golden Geese.
GM IN A CLINCH
In the last month, I have received a letter granting my the opportunity to us all of my GM card earnings ($2611.00) and also a voucher for $2000. This is all in addition to current offers. With this economy and the groundwork by the Obama Admin for further economic plunder, there is absolutely no chance for me to cash these offers in. And as long as the gov't has any ownership and influence in that company, GM will not even be considered. They've wasted enough of taxpayer money.
st denis
we all warned the trolls what would happen if flap ears was elected.
But it seems now like just as he is going after the earners to punish them for their success he is repaying the muzzies for their money in his campaign by assuring them they are merely third rate criminals and not blood lust terrorists.
But in his LA speech given after he celebrated the 100 days of miracles, you ain't seen nothing yet.
Perhaps for once he might decide to tell the truth, but more likely we will be stuck watching the biggest bait and switch of all time
But for the trolls, he isn't going back on his word, he is just adjusting to the new reality, which by odd circumstances he has created
Oh wait that sounds like he has powers heretofore in the providence of the LORD. Better to say his ignorance brought about
Shilling for GM?
I am shilling for American jobs and workers. I am shilling for manufacturing capacity here in the USA. I am shilling for one of the greatest companies to ever exist. I am shilling for helping them get through a difficult period of time. And by the way, I am doing it with my bucks too.
talent scout
I agree with you. It is INSANE!
St. Denis In Obama's Red America
This is way beyond pre 911 mentality, this is insanity.
=======================
The mother of all f-ups: The Obama Administration has decided to treat all terrorists attacks ANYWHERE in the world as a police action. This includes any enemy combatants caught on the battlefield in Afghanistan, who will now be read their Miranda rights.
Same mindset as the government had prior to 9-11
=======================
Its so insane its never been done by any nation on earth, and because America is now being run by an insane man, this is his demand.
Delusion and fraud is all this man knows
Update
This site is a breeding ground for folks who hate America. As you can see from the news today and from the horrors of last week, inciteful rhetoric from the right wing of your party is fomenting death and destruction. I hope all of you are happy with your results. I took a look at the list of articles by these socalled pundits here on Townhall, most of the titles have "libera or Democrat" in them and spend most of their time spewing nothing but hatred and contempt. One day some of you will wake up, I hope its soon because your side is fast becoming the most dangerous party in America.
congress and gov't motors
who actually believes that fools like bawney fwank have a clue considering any aspect of the economy.
But it seems the dims in congress continue walking lock step with dictator obamarxist in his quest to destroy capitalism.
But the folks at ford had better watch out. Now that flap ears is the ceo of chrysler and gov't motors he ain't gonna sit back and have to compete with a real company.
Ford is living on borrowed time until flap ears the marxist gets his claws into ford. It doesn't matter that ford is still a private company, he won't allow the competition to his failed leadership at being a ceo
I guess the only hope might be that after the unions and flap ears the clueless finally kill off chrysler and govt motors, they may be sold for scrap value and real business men buy them and breathe new life into the operations, free themselves from the union and build a product americans will want to buy
Ha! I Warned The Libs!
I warned you on Monday and yesterday about this:
The Treasury bond sale was a BUST today and interest rates have been increased, again, all because Obama and Congress will NOT stop spending money.
China doesn't want any more of our debt.
Na Na Hey Hey Kiss His Arse Goodbye!
And,
The mother of all f-ups: The Obama Administration has decided to treat all terrorists attacks ANYWHERE in the world as a police action. This includes any enemy combatants caught on the battlefield in Afghanistan, who will now be read their Miranda rights.
Same mindset as the government had prior to 9-11.
Buyers remorse
Buyers remorse now extends to Chrysler,GM,and the Obama administration. It's going to be a rough ride for the next three years.
And if Not,
I stand corrected. I had forgotten that the commerce clause gives Congress authority to meddle in anything, anywhere, anytime -- just so long as something, somewhere, sometime crossed a state line. I'd best be careful next time I buy a can of beans packed elsewhere.
P.S. - Go Herd
Support FORD!!
I will never buy another GM or Chrysler as long as Obama owns and runs them!
Ford, as far as I am concerned, is the only American auto manufacturer left and we should support them!
Looks like my next vehicle
Will either be a Ford or Toyota, Honda, or just about anything other than a GM or Chrysler product. As long as the Government has it's hands in the pot and it's thugs are taking over private auto businesses, I'm not touching a GM product with a 100,000 foot pole.
I'd rather support Toyota than the thugs in Washington or their union cronies.
More for Denise
And that even factors in many of the groats (the 20% who actually approved would have to be ultra-ultra-delusional groats like Frank, Dumbahue, Lon, ...).
Oh, vey!
Eighty-three percent (83%) of voters nationwide rate the U.S. Constitution as good or excellent, and there is little public support for changing the document.
However, the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 44% believe the Constitution doesn't place enough restrictions on the government. Only 10% hold the opposite view and say the nation’s governing charter places too many restrictions on government. Thirty-eight percent (38%) say the balance is about right.
Oh, vey! After some more fiats from the Totalitarian-in-Chief, those 38% will join the 44%.
So much for "positive rights"!
Frank
"You would prefer to close down GM to prove a point about free markets and the invisible hand instead of providing them a way to bring the company back to life. I can see that the old adage "there but for the grace of God go I" has no place in conservative politics. Thankfully, the rest of us have woken up to your ideological madness and thrown you bums out."
Approval for the GM bailout is around 20%
Upland William
"What provision in the Constitution of the United States gives the federal government (or any other) the authority for all these economic fiascos"
The commerce clause, of course. Don't you know that the founding fathers intended this clause to swallow up the rest of the Constitution?
P.S.- Go 'eers!
I keep asking!
What provision in the Constitution of the United States gives the federal government (or any other) the authority for all these economic fiascos?
Another question: When will some of these private corportion big shots show some spine and tell the government yahoos to go play in traffic?
As for me and my house, we will buy Ford or foreign. (nice play on Joshua, "And If Not"!)
Good money after bad
This is what happens with inexperience and an agenda all of your own. President Obama would rather give the Saudi's mega bucks for oil than find a cheaper fuel for cars. If the money that was spent to bail out GM and the trickle down victims was spent to research running a car on water or some other method this would solve the need for Middle East Oil, but then how would Obama healthily tax WATER?
Furthermore, we could still keep the fuel guzzalers because water is affordable. Gas is expected to go to European prices...$8.00/gallon. Thus the need for death traps for cars.....No sense at all!
One would assume that Obama cares more for the Saudis than he does Americans! Oh me! We have 3 plus more years of this nonsense.
Frank sounds like
a displaced erstwhile "employee" of DoomPete (Dome Petroleum) or Gainers Foods--two companies which received huge bailouts (DoomPete from Ottawa, Gainers from Edmonton)--lots of bakvas in his post, but nothing cogent in what passes for his mind!
Frank
"I can see that the old adage "there but for the grace of God go I" has no place in conservative politics"
If you think that GM and Chrysler are in the position for massive bailouts because they just got unlucky or were suffered an 'act of God', then you have not paid attention to the decline of the auto industry the last 20 years (okay, I'm being generous- 40 years). You are merely shilling for the UAW. Be honest and admit it.
If you think that the gubmint and the UAW can run GM and Chrysler without making the changes that should have or could have been made in bankruptcy, then you should bone up on your economics.
The country can't afford the billions per year in subsidies that the gubmint will be paying the UAW via GM and Chrysler.
Hold onto your butts, hyperinflation is on its way.
Government Motors and Cries-ler
Choose this day whom you will buy.
As for me and my house, we will buy Ford or foreign.
It's a gross travesty what is happening to hundreds of franchised dealers and the secured debt holders of these two car companies. It will never be forgotten.
Let me get this straight....
You would prefer to close down GM to prove a point about free markets and the invisible hand instead of providing them a way to bring the company back to life. I can see that the old adage "there but for the grace of God go I" has no place in conservative politics. Thankfully, the rest of us have woken up to your ideological madness and thrown you bums out. Once the mouth breaters that make up your base realize it, you will be left with Bible toting white male supremacists and the occasional black man who thinks the white man is oppressed. Are all of you on drugs? Unbelievalbe.
Galen (in jest) wrote
as last sentence "My favorite was: 'You own the company. Why not drive the car?' "
To answer, I'll whip out an old Nehru joke.
A foreign journalist once spotted Nehru smoking a Cuban cigar at one of his many junkets. He asked Nehru, "sir, you've made mutch pitch to your compatriots to 'buy Indian goods' so why are you smoking a Havana?". Nehru's response, "I also told my compatriots to 'burn foreign goods'; is that not what I'm doing now?"
Do they realize how stupid they are,
and how hated they are?
Since you try to be like Congress, Rich
whose money are you spending and can I share the wealth?
just kidding, I would simply like to feel like I can keep some of my own money. But that doesn't seem to be in the cards under this faux administration.
Boycott GM, Delphi & Platinum Equity
Delphi Corp., the largest supplier to General Motors Corp., said it has reached a deal to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The plan includes selling Delphi's remaining operations to a Los Angeles-based private equity firm, Platinum Equity, which has lined up commitments of $3.6 billion to finance the operations, including $2 billion from General Motors.
Meanwhile, where are all investigative reporters that during Republican Administrations write in-depth articles on the homeless? With foreclosures continuing to skyrocket despite Obama's mortgage bailouts, you just have to know that the numbers of homeless must be staggering.
Ouck Obama and Government Motors.
