Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

President Barack Obama gave an excellent speech in Cairo explaining how he was going to work toward re-setting the relationship between American and Islam.

The fact of the matter is, Muslims kill other Muslims with far greater frequency than Westerners kill Muslims or Muslims kill Westerners.

In his speech, Obama said

Although I believe that the Iraqi people are ultimately better off without the tyranny of Saddam Hussein, I also believe that events in Iraq have reminded America of the need to use diplomacy and build international consensus to resolve our problems whenever possible.

The American President - who went out of his way to remind his Egyptian audience that his full name is Barack Hussein Obama - would do well to remember that we really didn't have much of a beef with the other Hussein - Saddam - until he decided to invade Kuwait.

*** Special Offer ***

America didn't have to send over a half a million troops to liberate Kuwait and protect Saudi Arabia from Iraqi invasion in 1991. We could have just used the diplomatic power of the United Nations and called upon the Arab League to make Saddam put the tanks in reverse and return to the status quo ante.

Yeah. Right.

How about the international diplomatic consensus which was built to prevent Saddam from murdering perhaps 300,000 of his own people? How did that work out?

Did the United States have a national interest in helping the Iraqis throw off the yoke of a murdering dictator? Maybe not. But if we didn't, then someone explain to me the national interest which was at stake in defeating Adolph Hitler and the German Army in Europe in World War II.

If America's national interest was at stake in the latter, then it was also in the former.

How about the international consensus which was built to stop the horrors of mass ethnic cleansing in Darfur and before that in Rwanda? The excellent use of "diplomacy and international consensus" didn't do much to save a million lives in Cambodia, or hundreds of thousands of lives in Croatia, Bosnia and points east.

When America took military action, it stopped. When we didn't, it went on. It is impossible to know how many other cases of ethnic cleansing have been prevented by the fear on the part of the perpetrators that America might be stirred to action.

The most egregious example ethnic cleansing of modern history was the attempt by the Nazis to completely eliminate Jews.

It was interesting to me that, in the official transcript which noted the points at which the audience applauded the President's remarks, there were no notations of (APPLAUSE) when the President said:

Threatening Israel with destruction or repeating vile stereotypes about Jews is deeply wrong and only serves to evoke in the minds of the Israelis this most painful of memories while preventing the peace that the people of this region deserve.

But when Obama said,

So let there be no doubt, the situation for the Palestinian people is intolerable. And America will not turn our backs on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity and a state of their own.

The transcript noted (APPLAUSE).

Does Barack Hussein Obama really believe that, without the implied threat of American military intervention the Egyptians, Syrians, Jordanians, and Saudis would demand that school children start their day singing the Arabic version of "All we are saying; is give peace a chance" and make it official government policy to accept the fact of Israel?

As recently as 2004 at the museum in Amman, Jordan in which the Dead Sea Scrolls are on display, the regional map in the entryway did not include a country named: Israel.

At an event in Switzerland in 2002, Colin Powell was asked how he felt about the U.S. being referred to as the "Great Satan." Here was his response: [F]ar from being the Great Satan, I would say that we are the Great Protector. We have sent men and women from the armed forces of the United States to other parts of the world throughout the past century to put down oppression. We defeated Fascism. We defeated Communism. We saved Europe in World War I and World War II. We were willing to do it, glad to do it. We went to Korea. We went to Vietnam. All in the interest of preserving the rights of people. And when all those conflicts were over, what did we do? Did we stay and conquer? Did we say, "Okay, we defeated Germany. Now Germany belongs to us? We defeated Japan, so Japan belongs to us"? No. What did we do? We built them up. We gave them democratic systems which they have embraced totally to their soul. And did we ask for any land? No, the only land we ever asked for was enough land to bury our dead. And that is the kind of nation we are.

Amen.

Robert Frost on war
The Colin Powell who made that final statement was the Colin Powell I would have voted for in a heartbeat if he had run for President. But the Current Occupant of the White House apparently mesmerized him and transformed him into something far less admirable.

Near the end of his life, when John F. Kennedy was still President, Robert Frost said, "Peace is something you get only by war or the threat of war, however tacit the threat." A memorable truth, stated succinctly by a great poet. Tyrants SHOULD fear the United States of America.

I'm afraid that right now they are basking in the assurance that nothing they do will provoke a seriously damaging response from the American Commander in Chief, who is after all only a politician, never having been trained as a warrior, except in wars of words, and who thinks by words to defeat all his foes.

Connecting the dots
And everyone (Obama included) seems to forget in the aftermath of 9/11 the perceived issue was the intelligence services not connecting the dots. As such scant and incomplete information, fragments, that taken together could present (and did on 9/11) a grave result for America.

Leading up to the start of the second Iraq War, We knew the Iraqi's had talked to Al Qeada, aided the escape and harbored affiliates (Zarqawi), and had used chemical and biological weapons.

The possibility of terrorists and WMDs (the nexus Chenney talked about) presented a grave national risk, that could not be left to chance.

It was well known in the Administration that CIA and other intelligence services reach into Iraq was exceedingly poor and thus rightfully lacked credibility.

Diplomacy was tried, but iraq would not allow unfetted access to his WMD engineers, or to all sites in the lead up to the war, so the decision was made to go.

Even Hans Blix said he expected that the US forces would find WMDs after the invasion.

So what is at issue with the start of the war is how much risk should we take. That does not bode well for thwarting Iranian nuke efforts and Obama's "diplomatic" strategy.

There is no doubt the international enemies are joyful at the new US weakness in its approach.

The problem doesn't go away
I don't expect the Arab world to acknowledge the right of Israel to exist--not ever. The only thing that keeps Israel from being destroyed is the willingness of Israel to use its military force. Period. My great-grandchildren, if any, will still live in a world where Israel's existence is threatened daily. President Obama's speech will not move the Arabs one step closer to ending their permanent war against Israel and the Jews.

Colin Powell's statement summarizes what is possibly the noblest characteristic of the United States. And yet, there will always be too many dictators murdering their own populations for the United States to remove. We do not have the men, the guns, or the blood to right every wrong.

In 1987 I knew that one day the US would have to destroy Saddam Hussein. I saw a newsmagazine cover with a photo of a pile of dead Kurds, gassed by Saddam's government. Prominent in the photo was the body of a father partly covering the body of his young daughter in a hopeless effort to protect ther. The dead girl seemed to be about the age (2-3) of my own daughter at that time. Someone had to remove this savage who gassed little girls.

But again--there are many governments who inflict such harm on their own people. How do we stop them all?

Worst of the Worst
Getell,

I agree with much of what you had to say, but I would like to make a point. Saddam was not just another ruthless dictator like so many others. His record of murderous rule was arguably the worst of the worst, and top 5 in the 20th century. His campaigns against the Shia after the first gulf war, and Kurds latter accounted for hundreds of thousands, and he was killing 10-25,000 a year as a natural part of maintaining his power, injuring and imprisoning many more. The millions that died in the Iranian war, and those that starved before he figured out he could exploit the Oil for Food program are also on his docket.

By 2003 Saddam was the worst or the worst, and presenting a grave threat (see comment 2) to the US. His regime absolutely needed to be disembowled, and replaced with more responsible governance there.

The very idea
that communism is defeated or was defeated is a JOKE.
Obama is too busy steraling from the USA and making wage slaves of all of us to worry about the death and destruction and warring around the world, and the elite of the middle east taking every last drop from their own populations. Obama is merely one of THEM. So is his entire entourage.
You think any one of those people he is opening his yap to believes one word from his piehole when he is the head masterous beast of the slaying of 50 million USofA babies ?
They laugh in his face when he talks about peace and human rights, and JUSTLY so.
The monsterous president, condoing slaughter of his own citizens, to the tune of 50 million so far, makes his world tour laps and preaches - and they see what they should see, a mass murdering monster of a proportion they could only dream to match.

Maybe if Obama puts flowers into enough
muslim-held gun barrels, they'll realize we only want peace with them, and they'll stop murdering people.

Wendy
well said! Hats off to you.

America is based on an idea
the rest of the world is tribes.

In Vito Veritas
That's a really profound statement.

What on earth can we do about that?

Learn From D-Day

A British veteran of D-Day once remarked that he knew when he left his transfer ship that he would return to England one of three ways: dead, injured, or victorious.

Our fight with Islamofascism is no less dire, in terms of the survival of Western Civilization and the furtherance of democracy. Further, with our weakened economy, they are more likely to take advantage of it and strike here, again.

Watch Reagan's speech at Pointe du Hoc on the 40th anniversary of D-Day here:

http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/ronaldreaganddayad dress.html

And, read his speech of the same day given at Omaha Beach here:

http://www.strategypage.com/respect/articles/reagan_omaha_b each.asp

And, see Army's video (8:35 minutes) commemorating D-Day here:

http://www.army.mil/d-day/

Wendy writes
"Americans had established long-term contracts and investments; experiencing a violation of the rights of Americans and other allies upon nationalization of their property; experiencing violations of Americans' and other allies' rights to life and liberty under the Nazi regime; losing politico-military stability in the world; and losing the prospect of future peace and prosperity with such a major enemy unhinged and unchecked, to name just a few interests."

Very interesting take, do you not see how that is happening right under your nose today?

Nationalizing corporations like GM and Chysler, dictating salaries and who is to be paid are not American values, they are violations of our rights exactly as hitler did. Over-riding the rule of law as to the bondholders who are supposed to be 1st in line in order to pay off the UAW who supported the would be dictator.

And you call galen an idiot...put down the Kool-aid and wake up to what is happening to your country because people like you were so enamored of the "one". What hitler did in Germany is no different than what Il Duce is doing today and a lot of good people will die before this clown is replaced with a real American.

Wendy
I don't want to criticize you because I see where you stopped reading Mr. Galen's column, but be clear: he wrote so nicely about Our Leader at the start to make it clear that this is a polemic on issues not personality. I would love to be equally restrained in my horror at what the Kenyan is doing. I have never in my lifetime seen such an unmitigated crook in charge of so much.

It really is like being ruled by the Mafia.

But the Mafia are not going away just because we ask them to and at this point, the strategery is not to alienate those on the brink of recognizing what all of us here readily see. So Rich was polite to begin with.

Also, it really should be clear that he goes on to state exactly why opposing Hitler was the right thing to do, even if we had no immediate national interest in doing so. We would have had one within months, if not weeks anyway.

Of course, Hitle's ally Hirohito had just assaulted us and when we declared against them, Adolf would not have resisted declaring against us immediatley anyway, even if it would have been in his best interest in the long run. Despite his wish to found the 1,000year Reich, he never thought long-tern.

The world according to Liberals.

According to today's Liberals, WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War were all wars of choice and should be apologize for.

Paul is Right
Yes, Wendy, Paul (Jun 6, 2009 - 7:46 AM EST) is right. Clearly, you have misrepresented Mr. Galen's intention. He was making a rhetorical contrast. He said, "But if we didn't [have a national interest in helping the Iraqis throw off the yoke of a murdering dictator], then someone explain to me the national interest which was at stake in defeating Adolph Hitler...." Mr. Galen is affirming that we did, in fact, have such an interest.

Clearly, you misconstrued his words and have attacked him unjustly.

unfortunately, president obama has a permanent sound track of disney music running through his head. zippity do da, etc.

An old colleague of mine, now deceased,

The first BIG Lie
I was taught it school...

"It Takes Two To Fight!"

And they said it with a straight face.

Then they told me I was back talking when I explained the hard lesson I learned in the schoolyard.

"One not fighting back, will still get the snot kicked out of him."

Perhaps they were somewhat offended that I didn't say snot at the time as well.

But the lesson still remains...

"Sometimes, it only takes one to fight."

But always, "IT TAKES TWO TO MAKE PEACE!"

All you Lib Trolls, --

We're enabling bad behaviour
By allowing foreigners to count on the US to intervene for purposes like getting Hussein out of Kuwait. Instead, we need to show by example how to run a country. And citizens of foreign countries need to do the work to ensure their countries are free. Freedom isn't free - that is unless foreigners count on the US to do it for them.

I just
rec'd an e-mail that's a reminder of the compliticty of the Democrat party in this debacle we are now faced with. The essence is a reminder that in 1987 the Democrat controlled Congress held hearings about Iran/Contra (in which marxist members of Congress had prevented
our help going to those opposed to the Sandanista's..you all remember the Dear Commandante letter. And some of the co signers are still in office today)
Anyway, at the so called hearings, that Mensa
candidate algore was questioning Col North regarding his security measures for his family
because he and they were threatened.
The person threatening him was Osama bin Laden,
and Ollie had the right take and if these
pusillanimous nincompoops infesting that party had taken his advice, Osama would have assumed room temperature long before the first WTC bombing and 9/11. But in '93, the Demon RATS
under Bill Clinton looked the other way, encouraging OBL to continue his evil plans.
9/11..and all the DemonRATS looking for re election, and NOT out of patriotism voted to go to war against the al Queda protecting Saddam.
A few months later, the long knives came out against Pres. Bush and continued with the abetting media to call him a liar, war criminal whatever..JUST TO REGAIN POWER!
They didn't then, not do they now care about the victims of past attacks going back to 1979,
nor the military who gave their all for freedom.
Only their agenda, and their perks, and $$$ kickbacks.

And
This continuous attack of a sitting president is still unabated, with the person occupying the White House using every opportunity to bash president Bush. (I'm an independent conservative that believes in the Constitution as originally written and I have had issues with President Bush but not on the War).

The DemonRATS and their propaganda arm, drive by media and alphabets; are so invested in their determination to regain POWER whatever the cost, they will allow this person occupying the White House every thing he demands.

If he goes down, they all go down, thus the
refusal to vett him, to allow his Chicago thugs to run wild within the administration, neglecting the Rule of Law and upholding the Law of the Jungle.

The Republicans are almost as guilty because they allowed their own greed for power to destroy their majority..because they forgot their base holds them to higher, more patriotic standards. Now they are just as submissive dogs, piddling all over themselves whenever the DemonRATS hiss at them like the Rats they are.
We actually have had a Senator who calls himself conservative dismiss the question of O's

WORDS OF WAR

Didn't realize just how much he's missed, until I read and remembered some of the stuff he said... and stood for .

'Here's my strategy on the Cold War: We win, they lose.'- Ronald Reagan

'Of the four wars in my lifetime, none came about because the U.S. was too strong.'

No one ever welcomes a war that takes the lives of our youngest and braviest. Strength is a deterrence to war and the current President and congress is doing everthing to weaken our military strength. Barney Frank just proposed a 25% reduction in military spending. Obama apologies for American"s history when he is abroad and makes excuses for the Muslim's 5,000 year reign of terror on each other.

Obama's place in history will be future presidents cleaning up the mess he leaves behind after only one term. I just hope his mess does not included American lives.

Tea Party
Ollie North's testimony was about Abu Nidal,
not Osama bin Laden.

Abu Nidal was in fact forced to become "terrorist emeritus" and retire to
Baghdad. He was found dead there right before the US invasion.

That colleague of mine taught all sorts of English courses, but his specialty was linguistic geography--a field requiring exact knowledge, like chemistry or analytic geometry.

He tended to be very impatient with windy generalizations, deceptive abstractions (Hope! Change! Values!) and opinions masquerading as facts because nobody in his specialty could ever have gotten away with any of them.

I miss him. He died a few years ago, and many, many people attended his funeral.

So you heard that song too? My goodness, we must have ESP. None of my obamamaniac friends can hear it. They just go around mumbling the mantra "hope. change. om mani padme hum. change. hope. values. ommmmmm . . ."

national interests??
Mr. Galen perhaps you haven't read the US constitution, but it says COMMON DEFENSE, NOT NATIONAL INTERESTS. What justification is there for violating the rule of law and spending the lives of US citizens when we have not been directly threatened. The two legitimate military responses over the past century have been the Pacific front in WW2 and Afghanistan. The "noble cause" justification for military involvement is the flip side of the welfare state, they both hinge not on the purpose of government which is to protect life, liberty and property/fruit of labor, but on having a higher moral cause.
By what authority do we dictate to other countries their own affairs? AND PLEASE tell me how a government that is to protect it's own people rather sends them off to wars that we don't need to be involved in. FDR got us into the European front during WW2 because of ego, the same for Wilson during WW1, where we lost millions.

reply to useful idiots
Well, I don't know which liberal you have in mind, but it looks to me like conservatives such as Lenard are the ones claiming that WWII (and other wars) are just choices made by evil liberals. Can you conservatives PLEASE try to get your stories straight? Was WWII a necessary war to destroy an evil empire, or was it an ego-trip for a liberal fascist (FDR) who, for God knows what reason, decided to wage war against a...fascist fascist (Hitler)?

An aside: My father landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day and fought the Germans right through to VE Day,receiving wounds that compromised his health for the remainder of his life. He never doubted that he was on the right side and that the German SOBs deserved what they got. I guess that makes him an agent of the American liberal fascist regime or something, fighting in a needless war. There. Did I get you conservatives right on this?

The Warrior Nations
All of the warrior nations today happen to be Islamic. This is traceable to the facts that the founder of Islam was a warrior and that the credo of Islam is intolerant of any nation or political system that is not based on Islam.
Therefore, we must become a warrior nation also or we will be conquered by the Islamic warriors.
