Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

By the time you read this on Monday morning, General Motors will have declared bankruptcy. Within the next few weeks, according to published reports, it will have spun off or closed its Hummer, Saturn, Saab, and Pontiac divisions leaving GM with only its Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, and Buick lines.

General Motors has been in business since 1908. It became a "blue-chip" stock on March 16, 1915 when it joined the list of the, then, 12 companies which made up the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

On April 28, 2000 a share of GM would have cost you $93.63. Last night you could have bought about 125 shares for that same money as GM was trading at 75 cents. I suspect that had more to do with people wanting GM stock certificates as an historical oddity rather than as an investment.

*** Special Offer ***

As he did when Chrysler went differential up, President Obama is scheduled to make an official announcement about the GM bankruptcy from the White House at about noon. He may or may not get into all of the details, but Obama will own over 72.5 percent of whatever the "new" GM looks like with a trust fund of the United Auto Workers owning the second biggest chunk at 17.5 percent.

For those of you who, like me, are deficient when it comes to carrying-the-ones I did the arithmetic: The Obama Administration and the UAW will own 90 percent of General Motors.

Here's a good idea. Let's give the Feds and the UAW five or six years at the helm of GM and Chrysler to see how they do. If they do well, then the Federal government and Obama's other favorite union, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), can take over the nation's health care business.

If Obama and the UAW screw it up, then perhaps we should look for another direction for America's health care industry.

As regular readers of MULLINGS know, I drive a 1999 Land Rover Discovery. I bought it just after Land Rover went from being a British car to a German vehicle when BMW bought it. Then Ford bought it from BMW so I was an American car. Now it is owned by Tata Motors, so I am the proud owner of an Indian vehicle.

I am never more than one more expensive repair bill away from needing a new car. When that time comes, I don't think I will buy a GM or Chrysler product. It's that whole thing about rewarding bad behavior.

I am interested in knowing what you think about buying a Chrysler or a GM in the near future. Is buying a Ford - which did not get itself involved in the government loan business - a good idea or a bad idea given the fact Ford will have to service its debt and deal with its unions without the benefit of the government owning it.

Is buying a Kia or a Hundai - Korean cars - a better or worse idea than propping up Chrysler and GM?

How about those pesky Japanese brands: Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Nissan and all the rest? If they hadn't focused on quality and economy like they did, we would still be driving big America cars with lots of chrome and huge fins.

And the Germans. What more need be said about Mercedes and BMW? Will you buy one of those brands, thereby helping to toss GM and Chrysler under the imported bus?

The government can't force us to buy GMs or Chryslers, but they can provide incentives for us to do it. The Congress can pass legislation giving an additional tax exemption or deduction for the purchase of any car made by a company which is more then 50 percent owned by the federal - the American federal - government.

Conversely the Congress might pass a law putting an excise tax on the purchase of any vehicle not manufactured by a company which is more than 50 percent owned by the U.S. government.

The scary part about how far across the collectivism causeway we have come in so short a period of time is this: A few months ago you would have snorted at the silliness of a suggestion like that. This morning you're saying, "Oh, my, he's right. They might just do it."

The auto industry and health care are tied together. The thought of the government running them makes me car sick.

Voting with my wallet
I needed to buy a new car a few weeks ago. I didn't want to support bailout politics, but nor did I want to put ideology above what would be best for my family. I set out looking for the vehicle with the best reviews, with the features I needed and wanted, at the best price I could find. I expected to let the bailout status of the manufacturer act only as a tie breaker.

Interestingly, it turns out I didn't have to make that decision. None of my top three candidates were bailout recipients. Coincidence that companies who required bailouts didn't make the vehicle I wanted at the price I wanted? I don't think so.

No more GM vehicles
My family has owned GM and Chrysler vehicles over the years. I have great sympathy with the "buy American" plea. However, as far as cars are concerned now I have no desire to own a car built by Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, or BO, et. al. Even though it is our money that was used to buy GM as far as I am concerned their cars can now rot on the lots.

BO LAUGHING his behind off at YOU

IN LESS than 200 days he destroyed the lives
of over 5 million USA LEGAL citizens, middle class families, destroyed their livelihood, destroyed their businesses, destroyed their retirement, caused them to lose their homes, etc.

HE is just laughing his behind off about how he put the middle class workers into the bread lines so that he can control them.

GO READ and WEEP

The American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed!

http://english.pravda.ru/opinion/columnists/107459-0/

It must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me dear reader, I meant people. .. ETC ETC

CHINA got your "GREEN' JOBS !

OBAMA just imported 73,000 solar panels for the mega solar power producing plant in NEV.

FROM CHINA !

NO USA green energy jobs, for legal USA citizens!
HE gave the "GREEN ENERGY JOBS" to "CHINA" ! so that CHINA with buy more of his bogus paper you think ?

Will Keep My Vehicle..
As long as possible. Then sponsor a Cuban mechanic to keep it running longer.

I see no good alternatives. When Government cars don't sell, they'll come after the rest of them.

Have been keeping my vehicle
My car is 13 years old with only 160,000 miles on it. It's a GM but I wrote to GM over the weekend and cancelled my GM Mastercard telling them I have no interest in buying a car from a company from the democrats and unions that destroyed the car companies in the first place. I told them they could keep the money I have "saved" towards a new car as my uncoerced contribution to the stimulus package. The tax money that they took was all taken by coercion.

QUESTION
I can't help but wonder if now would be a good time to buy a Chrysler or GM car while they try to get rid of all their big vehicles. Might they be selling them at discounted prices? I know I'm only thinking of myself here, but if I don't, who will? Obama?? I don't want to wait until there are only "tin foil" cars (as Rush calls them) on the market. Any thoughts?

Keep your guzzlers
I have a 2007 4-runner - it's paid for and has low miles (less than 20K) . I don't drive much. Since it's paid for, the cost of gas won't hurt much. As government cars get smaller and smaller, I'll enjoy my big SUV. I think I can make it last for a least 20 more years.

The government can't force us to buy GMs
Just wait. Government forces me to do many, many things I don't like or disapprove of.

With the messiah, trashing what little we had left of "the rule of law", I won't be a bit surprised when we are mandated to purchase "approved automobiles".

The sheeple of this country have only themselves to blame. To them, if they aren't in jail, they're free. That's about the extent of their intellect. And since they're free, why not vote for more free goodies. It's a no-brainer......if you know what I mean.

Obama LIes

Obama said, "Bankruptcy is not an option."

Now he's has announced the GM bankruptcy outling the end result even before the Judge has had a chance to review the filing and hear evidence.

Imagine that.

The results of a court hearing before the judge has had a chance to hear any evidence.

Obama said, he doesn't want to run the auto industry.

Yet he has fired the CEO of GM. Has mandated by executive order the type of cars auto makers will produce. Has decided that dealerships will be closed, what plants will be closed, what benefits unions will maintain, and what cars will no longer be produced by GM.

Obama said, He inherited the deficit.

Yet he was a member of the Senate and contributed to the debt as one of the biggest "Earmark" spenders with an average of one Million dollars a day for every day he was in the Senate.

Obama said he would not raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000.

Yet he has already raised the cigarette tax on the poor. Is currently looking into taxing health benefits, proposed taxing Internet usesage, and proposed a carbon tax.

So clearly what Obama says and what Obama does are two different things.

Please note: Liberals support all the lying.

My two cents worth:
I come from a family that usually "spit" after even saying the name "Ford", and partly because of that upbringing, every new vehicle I've ever bought has been a Chrysler product. (Jeeps are my absolute favorites).
However, with Obama's meddling, I will never buy another Chrysler, and I am even ready to cross over to the dark side and buy a Ford. My older brothers will just have to disown me.

Only with a gun to my head
oh wait it could come to that with Dear Leader in charge.

I won't buy a Ford either -- I've made the decision not to do business with any company that is unionized including grocery stores and shippers like UPS. I realized that by supporting union products or srevices I'm supporting the Democrat party, my own enslavement, and abominations like abortion.

Why in the world would I do that? Did anyone see that over 90% of the Chrysler dealerships closed were owned by Republican doners -- coincidence?

Is it made at a UAW plant?
Is always my first question when buying any vehicle. If it is I don't buy.

Frequently overhaul
Frequently overhaul and repair daily used to be Ford's nick name. I don't believe they have changed much in value to the dollar. As far as GM goes I believe the last great car they made was the 68 Buick Le Sabre convertible. Honda and Nissan make great cars for the money!

My vote
I simply will not buy a car from Government Motors. End of story.

However, when I buy a new one, Ford will definitely be on my preferred list for not drinking the kool aid.

I HATE IT, what has happened to Detroit and these great companies, but they made their decisions. Now they will have to face the consequences. And to make matters worse, they have someone running the company with not only no car experience, but no BUSINESS experience. Now, that's a recipe for success. Sure.

What a shame. Wake up, America.

It's incredible
Ok, folks. I'm going to close your plant but it'll get better in the future!! You'll just have to "sacrifice" - until when? The 12th of never?? What's going to make these plants return?? Insanity reigns at 1600 PA Avenue - or does it?

Looks like a planned agenda to me. Who is crazy? Americans who sit idly by and let him do this without protest.

Proud owner of a Nissan Pathfinder

My second Pathfinder, and my 7th Nissan. Great quality cars.

My 2001 Nissan Pathfinder has only 67,000 miles on it; my last one had well over 200,000 on it when I traded it in on this one.

I can keep putting engines in this thing FOREVER, if I need to.

Big, comfy, fast, 260HP 4wd, great A/C, gas-guzzling luxury, paid in full, go anywhere, looks great. Take me, my family, and all our stuff.

The new American option? A cupholder-sized, underpowered road-gnat that costs as much as a Porsche.

Not for me, greenie-Nazis!

Just stay out of the fast lane if you see me coming so you don't get squashed like a bug on a windshield.

Obambi car fascism - Part 1
Obambi, through imperial fiat, imposed the new CAFE standards on car manufacturers. New fleet standards have to meet 35mpg by 2016, up 50% from current levels.

Of course, he's now the new car czar, as the Gov is now the majority owner. As boss, I guess he can do that.

Some problems I see: why didn't he just mandate 100mpg? If 35's good, 100's better, right? How about 1000mpg? How about Warp Drives? Why not?

Experts say the only way to even come close to meeting that mandate is to make cars much smaller and lighter, and development and implementation will still add somewhere between $600 - $1300 to the price of each car.

Obambi counters that three years of driving such a car will offset the higher price through fuel cost savings. But since we're not drilling here and now, and not building new refineries, and I'm sure he'll want to add new gas taxes... that doesn't compute at all.

Which brings us to the real problem: who's going to want to buy a cupholder-sized car made out of tinfoil that costs as much as a Porsche?

Seems to me the automakers are gonna be in bankruptcy all over again.

Obambi Car Fascism - Part 2
Some years back NHTSA released studies clearly stating that for every pound a car is lightened by decreasing its size and/or using thinner metal, 7.9 additional people per year are killed in traffic accidents, those deaths being directly attributable to the decreased physical protection afforded the occupants by the vehicle's body.

Lighten cars by 100 lbs, and 800 more people/year die; lighten them enough to influence CAFE standards -- let's say 1000 lbs -- and 8,000 people/year die for the sake of "climate change".

That's PER YEAR, folks.

A couple years ago, my daughter was driving her Chevy Tahoe (an absolute TANK of an SUV that even made my Pathfinder look small) and was stopped at a light when some yo-yo in a Prius plowed into her rear end.

Damage to the Tahoe: about $300 to replace the rear bumper.

Damage to the Prius: totaled; written off as salvage.

At least once a month I drive to San Diego to visit my folks for a day, which means round-trip driving of between 5 - 7 hours depending on traffic.

I'm not a midget, either, at 6'2" and 200#, with a bad back (I'm disabled because of it).

I can't even IMAGINE trying to make that drive doubled over with my knees under my chin and my nose smooshed against the windshield.

Throw my daughter (5'11") and son-in-law (6'1") in the car, and after October their baby, and there's just no way. The proverbial squeezing of 10 lbs of doodoo in a 5 pound bag.

So then what? We have to caravan in multiple cars?

Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose?

No Government car for me!!
I have a GMC tahoe now and will be turning it in next september when my lease is up and will NOT by another vehicle from them.

I love my suv and will never buy a smart car or for that matter any car built here that the government owns. The only car I will consider is another SUV or an Audi. We had one before and I felt very safe in that car.

I would love to see Obama and and all of Congress driving a smart car but I am sure none of them will, they just want everyone else to own them.

At this point I am holding back on any major purchases and will look to save as much as possible because the situation here in the US is not going to get any better.

I really would like to see someone start camping for 2012 , after all Obama did that the whole 2nd term of Bush.

THE UAW IS TO BLAME
BACK NOT TO MANY YEARS AGO GENERAL MOTORS TRIED TO SPIN OFF SATURN BUT THE UAW PREVENTED THE ACTION WHICH HAS COST THEM MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN PENSION PAYMENTS AND POSSIBLE THE LARGE PIECE OF THE PIE THAT THEY HAD ALWAYS ENJOYED IN THE COUNTRY HISTORY POST THE GREAT WAR. GREED WITH NO REPSECT TO SELF, COMMUNITY NOR COUNTRY HAVE DESTROYED THE STATUS SYMBOL WHICH STOOD FOR AMERICAN VALUES LIKE BASEBALL, HOT DOGS AND APPLE PIE.

Replacement Thoughts
Let's see, the Saturn Wagon is over ten years old and the Honda Civic Sedan is about eight; both so far seem to have some years left in them, so no hurry. I doubt GM will survive until I need to buy another one, or Chrysler either one; there's a great article in the WSJ today by a former Communist leader who ran Romania's car companies during Soviet times; he gives great examples of why governments, especially socialist ones, cannot do so effectively. Once BHO and his cronies get through destroying GM and Chrysler, only Ford will be left if you want to "buy American", unless you're into the exotic (and expensive) Tesla and similar. But by that point, even Ford may succumb to other stresses. We'll see in a few years; at least Ford will get me to look (if they're still there), otherwise it's Honda for me. Damn shame too, that Saturn was (still is) a nice car, even if the air conditioning went out a few years ago.

Suckers Need not Apply
Just what I wanted, Healthcare or a vehicle from those same marvelous folks that bring us that shining example of profitability and efficiancy the (U.S. Postal Service(or insert any other Govt. program or Agency here)). Thanks but no thanks.

say no to ford
I've always been a GM man, aside form a brief incursion into toyota, and my suzuki motorcycle, but dammit! now I'm reconsidering my imminent purchase of a new GMC Sierra, to relace my old and beloved model. If GM goes under to union inefficiency, I can swallow the bile and accept it. But Obama's takeover is too much. I am officially disavowing all ties to Government Motors and will likely accept a foreign knockoff of our best-made-in-America trucks. It was a sad day in the U.S. when we allowed a Socialist into the White House when we knew full well that they also controlled the Congress. Semper Fi and God bless America, but not the Obamanation.

Sure, if GM etc has what I like I'll buy
Sounds like the question is whether we will buy GM or Chrysler, now that they accepted a bailout from BHO, and have a history of mismanagement.

Well, I'm not buying no foreign car as long as GM or Chrysler, or at least some American car company, gives me a choice. I favor keeping the economy in my own country alive as much as I can, same as any other typical American (though I'm not including the repair shop industry), but it's not all up to me. It's also up to the domestic car companies to
practice good management.

They're still going to make good cars, though they may have to add a lot of eco go-carts to their inventories, most likely so will all of the foreign competition. Bottom line is they can't repeat the same mistakes as in the past: designed obsolescence in 3-5 years, boring looks, extreme price premium for buying American, maybe some bad union deals, and whatever else they did wrong.

Michael Moore, by virtue of being from Flint, Michigan, now a town gone bust by GM's plant closures, has some insightful things to say about why GM failed, such as corporate greed and stupidity. Just don't read past that, or you'll get a lunatic lecture on how we should all ride trains and get rid of our cars because they cause global warming, and the closed plants can be used to make the trains and no more cars. Wouldn't hurt HIM to ride a bike to work but somehow I don't think he intends to get rid of his car.

http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/message/index.php?id=248

Chip
I went to read the MM piece but couldn't get through it.
Let's face it America can't build anything anymore, we shot to hell, and if we try to build something the asinine ninnies on one side tell us it's amtrack2 and the other asinine ninnies tell us it's got to be built overseas, and I'm more than certain both sides compromise in government and we get nothing anyone wants to or will use, and the foreign car fleets.
When I hear government get into buy and made in America, I'll start believing again they have a clue, and it better not be some green lib crybaby the world is dying crap either.

Obama--Kiddie Car Maker
Well, you know what kind of cars Obama wants GM to make--over-sized golf carts that will "save" the environment. I'll stick to my Honda and hope the Federal Government won't do a reverse Affirmative Action by saddling all foreign car makers with huge taxes.

I don't blame the Messiah, however, I blame the stupid millions of Americans who voted for him. They deserve what they're getting while the rest of us sober, rational Americans unfortunately have to suffer along with the jerks that pulled the lever for Obama.

Fords
I`ll keep my fords till the government comes to take them.I`ll refuse to drive the government road kills they`ll be making then.Does anyone think they`ll be allowed to keep a symbol of independence, the american car, from a government that wants to take your religion, guns and now cars from you.Incumbents out across the board starting with nobama.

Communist Cars
We know what type of cars a government will make. Look at the Eastern Block countries before the Iron Curtain fell. The cars they made were POS.
I was looking at a new mini-van for my growing family and decided to get a Town and Country when the time came. However, now that Chrysler is owned by the federal government, I'll be getting a Honda Oddyssey, or maybe a Toyota.

To bad Ford doesn't make the Windstar anymore.

Mini and Smart Cars
If Obama, the CEO and President of GM and Chrysler, has his way, we all will be driving clown cars. But we will need 2 or 3 to go anywhere since the mandates for child seats means that anyone with more than one child can no longer drive the family in a standard size car. But the plus side is, only half of the family will be killed in the MVA instead of just bumps and bruises that would be suffered if everyone was in a larger SAFER car.

No Ford, either
Don't forget, Ford was there in Washington scraping at the boots of Congress to give out loans and bailouts to Chrysler and GM. Sure, they didn't take any, but it didn't stop them from begging for taxpayer money for the other two so they wouldn't have to pay for more from suppliers.

Me? I'm torn between a BMW 135i and the Nissan GT-R. I won't buy American unless it's a compelling product from someone other than the Big 3. With all the regulatory nonsense going on in America, no one will start up a company to provide it.

GM = GOVERNMENT MOTORS

.....THE FOXES HAVE TAKEN OVER THE HEN HOUSE ...

.....The two entities, the Federal Government and the UAW, that are most responsible for the fall of GM, are now running the company that they destroyed ...

.....The death warrant for GM was eagerly signed in 1933 by FDR ...with the passage of the WAGNER ACT the unions were given life and death power over the Company ...the Democrat Party and the unions quickly joined forces to begin the slow process of bleeding the auto industry to death ...

.....The biggest loser in the takeover of GM is FORD who now finds itself in the unenviable position of having to compete with the Government for customers ...any takers on how long it takes FORD to go under? ...

.....I personally will never buy a car from a government owned company or from a union shop ....the FEDS can't force me to buy their crap ...at least not yet .....COLOSSUS

.....

BRIANR CA

.....How's that protest vote working out for ya? .....COLOSSUS

Haliburton
How many times have we heard that Haliburton got a no bid contract in Iraq and was stealing money from us. I wonder if the left can be as intelectual about a government owned car company getting all of the governments car business without a bid process, poor Ford they are screwed.

My next truck will
be a one that was not made by the UAW, I will not reward the governments bad behavior or vote with my money, against my own interests. The UAW and other unions spent over 60 million dollars to help get this bunch of clowns elected.

Never again
I am officially ending the practice of spending my money on anything affliated with a union. They are all socialists and spend huge sums to get Dems elected. Everyone always asks what can we do, here is something you can do today. Don't spend money with union companies.

Get you own Obamawagen!!
The Dear Leader has decreed that us peons will drive bubble-topped lawnmowers with bench seats and vee vill luff it!!

The Honda Insight was hilariously reviewed in the English press last week. It fits the description of the Obamawagen to a tee. O'Vomit cooked up a deal with GM to prohibit them from importing the putt-putt cars they ALREADY make overseas for the foreign market. THOSE losers are used to driving manure wagons anyway.

NOOOO!!! The "messiah" wants these roller skates made here instead of cars we actually WANT. He vill make us like zem und vee vill drive zem alzo!!! What a dictator you libtards foisted on us.

Porsche.
There is no substitute.

Voting has results
The majority of those laid off by GM undoubtedly voted for Obama. I suspect a certain level of buyer's remorse. An even higher percentage of the unskilled workers laid off in the declining economy voted for Obama. How's it feel, guys? The end is not in sight. The results of fiat money and government debt will hit all but the most affluent. You know, those rich greedy rats Obama swore to punish. You sowed the wind of envy, trying to raise yourself by cutting someone else down. It has never worked and never will. Hopefully, this debacle will be so clear and so painful it won't be tried again soon. The school of hard knocks is a grim educator, but some people will learn in no other.

The Moonbatmobile
Have no fear folks. We will all soon be driving moonbatmobiles, powered by moonbeams and traveling at warptruth speed.

pistol
I disagree. My mooncar will get 1,000,000 miles to the gallon, and be powered by hope n' change. A few years later, I'll be looking for my personal Star-Trek transporter system, because the feds passed a law saying it must be so.

Government Motors
BHO says he wants to be out of the car business as quickly as possible. I don't see it working out that way. With the feds and the UAW running the company, I expect product quality to deteriorate rapidly to the point Government Motors vehicles will resemble Trabis, Ladas and ZILs. The company will survive with periodic infusions of tax money and sell vehicles because government agancies and contractors will be under strong pressure to buy them regardless of quality and reliability.

Remember, all this comes from the folks who brought us the postal system and AMTRAK. And these guys want to run health care?

The Death of My Truck
Last night my truck gave up the ghost . I won't by a Gov.Moters car. Gas is getting to high again.I live a mile from downtown.Three quarters of a mile from my hang out.Three miles from walmart & a mile or less to the jiffy mart.
Today I fixed my son's old bike, new tires and all. No car payments,no gas,no insurance, hey I'm going to save some money. But you know I still like to walk. So why did I fix the old bike , To keep OBAMA'S hands off what little I have left.

rdsefert
You're on to something. How about those new traceable bullets. You know you're soon not allowed to own the regular ones. It will be illegal to shoot someone with non government bullets. How about a gasoline that only works in an o car? Will you still be able to get a tag for your "anything other than" an o car? If you get in an accident in your "illegal" car will you automatically be jailed? Everybody ran their mouths that o was "just" a community organizer. He is as wise as a serpent, but he is definitely not harmless. Don't underestimate him in the global political scene either. Just because he bows to a raghead doesn't mean o will be serving him. "And all the world will wonder after the beast." Revelation 13 Talk about warp speed. This isn't just another day; it's the beginning of the end. Know whom you serve now because the day is fast approaching when you will stand with Jesus and be slain for it or fall with the enemy and perish. If only it were laughable.

I Emulate The Government
Whenever I want to go anywhere, I steal a car from a rich person. I deserve it and they have plenty of cars.
