Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In on of those really sad cases of unintentional, but awful, timing the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum in, well, Boston, is closed for remodeling and isn't scheduled to reopen until the summer of 2010.

If you were the a member of board of directors of the one and only Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum in, well, Boston, it seems to me that knowing that hundreds, of not thousands of "Tea Parties" were going to be held today to protest … whatever is being protested … you might have used that as a huge fundraising opportunity.

Instead, the website says …

Closed for renovation.
Will reopen
Summer 2010

Happily, Samuel Adams (the revolutionary, not the beer manufacturing company) and his band of followers, the Sons of Liberty, were better at marketing than the museum directors and so on December 16, 1773 they dressed up like Mohawk Indians and did the deed.

The "deed" was to board three ships owned by the East India Company, the Dartmouth, the Eleanor and the Beaver, hacked into 342 crates of tea and emptied them into Boston Harbor causing enormous economic loss to the East India Company and a near-riot by PETA because the fish in the harbor had insomnia for three weeks from the caffeine in the tea.

Thus was the Boston Tea Party concluded. Three ships, one named for a small Ivy League college, one for a future First Lady of the United States and one for a small town in Pennsylvania (Population 4,401) were boarded by a bunch of guys dressed up in outfits which should have gotten them arrested on a hate crimes rap (anywhere but in the stadium housing the NFL team known as "the Redskins") and the next thing you know you've started a whole war.

Samuel Adams (1722 - 1803) was cranky just about his whole life. The British Parliament went out of its way to foster this crankiness by passing laws with lyrical names which, as the name of the brew would lead us to believe, drove Adams to drink.

Parliament passed the Sugar Act in 1764, to which Adams responded with pamphlets and speeches one of which contained the phrase "taxation without representation" which has since been adopted by the District of Columbia.

Next the sissies in London passed the Stamp Act 1765 which put a tax on most printed materials. As Adams was big into pamphlets he saw this as a tax aimed directly at putting him out of the rabble-rousing business. It was the Parliament's version of the U.S. Congress passing a law aimed directly at AIG executives to tax their bonuses.

Later, the U.S. Supreme Court, in McCullough v Maryland, took up the cause with a ruling declaring "The power to tax is the power to destroy" which the District of Columbia ought to consider for its next slogan right after demanding that the NFL team change it's name to the "Washington Native Americans."

Finally, the poofs sitting in Westminster passed the Townshend Acts in 1767 which taxed goods imported into the colonies. There was considerable discussion around the meeting halls of the day as to whether Parliament actually had the right to levy taxes like this but, like the Congress of 2009, the legislators were more interested in establishing their power than a strict interpretation of any pesky Constitution.

In May of 1773 the Parliament passed the "Tea Act" which was actually a tax reduction - at least for the East India Company - as it permitted the company to sell tea in the colonies without having to pay the same duties it paid when it sold the same tea in London. This, it was held, granted East India a monopoly because tea imported from other places by other companies had to pay import duties.

Some historians trace the beginnings of Starbucks to a clever marketing flanking maneuver getting people to drink four dollar coffee instead of one shilling tea thus rendering the Tea Act useless.

Yada, yada, yada seven months later the Boston Tea Party with music by the Sons of Liberty and 237 years after that we have today's "Tea Parties" protesting a bunch of pantywaists sitting in Congress raising taxes and … whatever.

That, in brief, is how we got to where we are today.

Funny, Rich! It wasn't just PETA that
was peeo'd, the greens were livid with making the Boston harbor green.

As to the curator closing the museum, he probably only reads the Boston Herald or the NYTimes and has not heard about the current tea parties.

Townhall must be a forum of rich people
Since everybody else's taxes are actually going down.

Well, I'm sure it all feels good, and that's what matters.

How misguided can you be?
Everyone's taxes are going up despite what Obama says. It is Congress that levies taxes. And taxes are going up for everyone that pays them. You idiots that buy into the rich envy game that the Democrats play are all fools. Who the heck do you think provides jobs, poor people? You can't increase taxes on those that provide jobs and expect to reduce unimployment. Oh that's right, you don't want to work. You want Obama just to send you checks for sitting on your worthless butt while you whine about the rich. The free ride is about to end because Uncle Obama can't give you money he doesn't have.

As General Eisenhower said...
"Beware the fury of an aroused democracy!"

Baaah..
We are all sheep when it comes to taxes.

The Difference
Between then and now is that this time the Tea Partiers are complaining about politicians that THEY THEMSELVES elected.

Dan
So, when the people we have in office, whether we voted for them or not, do something not to our liking, we are just supposed to shup up and take it?

If anything, if the person you voted FOR does something you don't like, you are even MORE obligated to protest him or her.

The Precedent That Wasn't
So, let me get this straight.

The original tea party was a protest prompted (at least in part) by a tax CUT for the world's largest multinational corporation that had an economic impact on ordinary American tea drinkers.

But today's tea parties protest a tax INCREASE (or more correctly, post-Bush tax restoration) for the wealthy, even though the vast majority of us---who correspond to the ordinary tea drinkers of colonial days---are getting a tax CUT.

Logic, please?

dan
there you have it all wrong. The country is now being run by the socialists that the dims elected and the clueless clown the brain dead voted to destroy the country.

Seems like you lefties were so determined to prove you weren't racists you elected the person the country knew nothing about.

But it seems the lefties have no problem with the huge deficits flap ears proposed and the dims voted for.

But why shouldn't the earners finally stand up to oppose the wasteful habits of a congress that can't stop wasting the taxpayers money and the dims never ending desire to reward the losers they enable

Eisenhower on conservative policies
Ken quotes Eisenhower about an aroused democracy. Here's another interesting thing that Ike said (quoted from a letter to his brother Edgar, dated Nov. 8, 1954:

"Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes that you can do these things. Among them are a few Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

Ah, my favorite Ike quote. And so timeless

johnwhatever
There is NEVER just a tax on the rich. And *luxury* taxes like the boat and marina tax of 1992 a la Clinton simply closed boatyards and marinas that had been employing crafstmen for sometimes centuries.

And as a member of the middle class whose white-trash family struggled up from earning a few $hundred a year until WW II, I resent ANYONE assessing more taxes on my and mine in ORDER TO TRSANSFER MY WEALTH, SUCH AS IT IS, TO ANY ONE ELSE.

I just came from a tea party in Belmar, NJ, where 3-400 amassed in a northeastern gale.

We had all kinds of restrictions:

No speeches, no bullhorns, no shouting
No anti-Obama signs (did anti-war "rallies" require no anti-Bush signs?)
No petition signing, no electioneering
No walking on both sides of the boardwalk and blocking traffic (there was no one, not even seagulls, besides us walking there)

In the middle of the march, a car pulled up and a woman who said she was 71 got out and said she had never protested anything in her life. I helped her onto the boardwalk, she took a flag from an organizer, and walked steadfastly into the teeth of the storm.

This is the Big O's oppostion: Ironworker uniform, NEA member varsity jacket, children with *Don't tread on me* signs, college students with cups of Dunkin Donuts coffee, and a retiree who had never marched before. An excellent demographic, save the usual ACORN shills were afraid to get too wet.

no shame?
Are we to be impressed by the fact that most major population centers in the USA are each home to a few dozen individuals who disapprove of how their tax dollars are spent? They believe that their taxes are all spent teaching Marxist theory to children who would be better off in state run "religeous freedom" centers. To show their frustration and anger, they have all joined together in "spontaneous" tea-bagging parties in their local public squares.

First problem, why on earth would God-fearing conservatives want to perform this x-rated ritual in public in front of their friends and neighbors? Did Fox use a recent episode of 'Family Guy' to introduce the middle America to the joys of 'tea-bagging' or was this honestly a grass-roots movement where local housewives taught each other the joys of this "hobby" formerly little known outside of NYC and San Francisco?

Or, as reported on both CNN and MSNBC, is this really a top-down movement led by the usual suspects at the top of the far-right political machine? Network news anchors have mentioned former congressman Richard Army as the "man behind the scenes" and as one news correspondant reported, "you would need a Dick Army to lead a nationwide tea-bagging movement."

Rave on, Steve
You've prob. never heard of Belmar. NJ, but it had a significant tea party in the middle of a northeaster. There were 2,000 scheduled today and they actually have been happening since January.

I'm already planning to attend one in July, when it is unlikely there will be either a northeaster nor a hurricane, yet.

If you really like paying taxes, you can pay mine, too.

And if you don't like cons. thought, go blog elsewhere.

Contrary to Steve's or is he Robert
or King Liberal or Mario or any of the other trolls who have all the time in the world to dispute on TH?

Dick Army never contacted me. Army has been out of office for years and is no Soros with billions to throw into buying the WH for an unproven and undocumented greehorn with Marxist tendencies.

There are dozens of tea party sites on the web. And as far as MSNBC goes, maybe you haven't noticed BUT IT IS 15TH IN NEWS, LASTEST OF LAST PLACES.

Maybe someone occasionally actually espouses a fact on MSNBC, but if it has since the Big O entered the race over two years ago, it's as rare as the DoDo, which is extinct.

Bezerk Zerobama
wants to take my tax money and give it to people who have not earned it. I'm retired military. My retirement is fully taxed. My wife's small retirement from the bank where she worked is fully taxed. Both of us are on Social Security and 85% percent of that is taxed. And Zerobama wants to give our taxes to deadbeats who haven't earned it, to jerks who took out mortgages they can't afford, and to corporations that should be going bankrupt. I'm P.O.ed and I'm not going to take it anymore. I hope there are millions more like me out there. More Tea Parties are needed, more demonstrations against big spending government are needed.

Obama not meet Constitutional criteria
Obama does not meet the criteria to be President under the U.S. Constitution. Why doesn't Obama release his college applications or his passport records? Because they will show that he is an Indonesian citizen, as he never gave up his Indonesian citizenship when he returned to Hawaii from Indonesia at age 10. (Obama's mother remarried an Indonesian when Barack was five, and she and Barack moved to Indonesia, where both became Indonesian citizens). In 1981, Obama traveled to Indonesia to visit his mother, and stopped off on the return trip to visit Pakistan with school friends. He traveled there on his Indonesian passort. Why doesn't Obama release his original birth certificate? Because it will show that he was not born in Hawaii, rather he was born in Kenya (his father's native country).

Either way, because he is an Indonesian, or because he was born in Kenya, Obama is not qualified to be President. Obama and the leadership of the Democratic Party know this to be true, and he deceived the American people by keeping it a secret and refusing to release the records. Mutliple legal cases are challenging Obama's status to be President. Check out-- wnd.com or obamacrimes.us or defendourfreedoms.us and spread the word, as the media REFUSES to cover this issue! The truth about Obama will be revealed.

The inflation tax....
That's what we got from Bush. That's what we'll get from Obama.

THE BROTHERHOOD OF FEAR
The sweeping indictment of conservative Americans in the recent DHS report branding us dangerous right wing nuts should come as no surprise as it is symptomatic of an insecure administration quickly losing its grip on reality and devolving into paranoia; an administration fearing a strong populist backlash over its radical policies to socialize, transform and deconstruct America. An administration headed for the rocks. At the height of the madness that shook the late 60s Ayn Rand said of the New Left that it was "a brotherhood of fear." And so it was and still is as is evident from this document.

Selective Outrage
Where were the Tea Partiers when Bush was spending billion$ on a foreign war falsley implied to have something to do with the 9/11 attacks?

GOP Teabaggers and Socialism
Any Repug who got teabagged in a public park yesterday (and you know who you are) did so in a - dare I say it - socialist park.

Socialism is everywhere and has been for a long time, during Republican administrations as well as Democrat administrations: Every time you drive across a bridge and it doesn't collapse, you can thank socialism. If you attended *any* public school and/or university you can thank socialism. If you've ever been in danger and called the cops can also thank socialism. Hell, if you've ever checked out a book from a library, you've benefited from socialism. And, lastly, if you've ever been teabagged in a public park (as so many repugs have been), you can thank socialism for providing you with a nice setting. Don't let them confuse you into thinking that socialism is a bad thing (they tax you the same amount no matter what, it's just that socialism dictates that they use the money at home, not abroad, which is a good thing).

Crowhaul
How come lefties are all up on the latest perversion du jour? You seem to know all about it.
Your idea of socialism is laughable. Socialism is government control of finances and industries. It is a component of both communism, which goes for absolute ownership and fascism, which settles for control. Now, which kind of socialist are you-- fascist or communist.

Deathlemon
Townhall must be a forum of rich people
Since everybody else's taxes are actually going down.

My taxes have not gone down in fact my taxes have increased by 5% over the same period from last year. Guest what? I make less than 50K a year, so why are my taxes being raise? To pay some dead beat who is too lazy to get of their dead beat a** and work. I'm over 50 years old worked since I was 12, and I'm also 70% disabled. So I do not want to here any lameass excues why someone can't work. If this sounds like I'm a little more that ticked, that is because I am!!!

I wanted to attend a local tea party (which had a great turn out about 7% of the pop was there.)but I had to work the night before and need my beauty sleep.

The Bru-Ha Ha over "Tea Parties"
Samuel Adams was a true blue libertarian living in what was then the British Colonies, and what he did was to give a charge in the population of the 13 Colonies that would eventually become The United States of America!
Half of the so "well-learned" media seem to have forgotten, selectively, one of the greatest protests against being taxed for more and more of what regular folks partook of on a regular basis. Sugar was in everything(just like today), so the British Parliament knew damn well what they were doing! They, not unlike today's congress, did not give any thought to the fact that the people having this tax forced upon them were not just dumb peasants! The insult to their intelligence is very similar to the current legislative and executive branches of our government's perception toward the U.S. taxpayer!
The comments made toward those supporting the premise of the "Tea Parties" were some ignorant, some fascist, and some who had not a clue!
Higher taxes due to the most careless, and extravagant spending effect all taxpayers, not just the people with whom common sense has a place in their intellect! If President Obama's, Speaker Pelosi's, and the most arrogant, yet delusional, congress since Buchanan was President, think that all this spending will help, then they are not giving any thought to their grandchildren, the countries looking to see America fail, nor are they aware that the American spirit is stronger, and smarter than they think! History will not be kind to what is taking place in D.C. at this time!
Pray that enough people will be like Mr. Adams and stand up for what this country was built on: INTEGRITY! Rick in Macon Ga.
