Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

I finally figured this out. Barack Obama is the Community Organizer-in-Chief. He is taking the inequities, the slights, the unfairness, the spread between wealth and poverty, the choices the rich have but which the poor do not … and he wants to fix that. For everyone.

Sounds good, actually. Who doesn't want to take "your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" and lift them up?

It is not an issue of taking from someone who has a lot and giving it to someone who has less. It is an issue, in Barack Obama's psyche, of taking everything from someone who has a lot and giving to all to people who have nothing.

I'm not talking about a Prada handbag which sells for $1,500. No one needs a Prada handbag which sells for $1,500. If you've got the money and that's what you want to spend it on, that's fine with me but it better not show up on my Amex.

The Obama people don't think that's OK. They believe that no one needs more than whatever's on sale at Filene's Basement and anything more than that should be confiscated for use by people who can't even afford Filene's.

Yesterday there was a health care summit at the White House. It was one of three "summits" which have been held in Washington over the past two weeks - one on the economy (how's that working out?) one on energy and then the health care square dance yesterday.

The issue as it is formulated in Obama's mind is: How can we have a nation with a gazillion dollar GDP and not guarantee health care for every person? I'm not sure I disagree.

The Constitution guarantees a lawyer for every two-bit crook who holds up a neighborhood convenience store, but is silent on the matter of requiring that every person have access to a health care professional when the need exists.

We are not some poor fifth world nation. We are the United States of America and we should be able to do this. The issue is: How?

I pay nearly $600 a month for my health insurance. Just mine. The Mullings Director of Standards & Practices gets hers through her job. I want my money's worth. I don't mind if some of my $600 goes to help someone who is poor get health care; I DO care if the government decides it is unfair for me to buy better health care than the poor guy and makes me pay $600 per month to get the same level of health care as someone who pays zero.

The housing deal. Within seconds of the President announcing the housing bail-out people began reading the fine print to see if they should stop paying their mortgages so they could qualify for the bailout.

Been paying your mortgage for the last 15 months - or 15 years? Stupid. Your taxes are going to go to help pay for the guy who can't, or doesn't want to, pay his. Why should you live in a house free of fear of foreclosure if your neighbor down the block can't?

By the way, as I understand it, nothing I the housing plan deals with second or third or fourth mortgages which are part and parcel of this mess. People used their house as a piggy bank and mortgage brokers kept refinancing to build the new pool, the playroom, or the home theater because the overall value of the house kept going up.

What about leaving the value of your house IN your house? Nah.

If you wanted a new car you redid the second on your house, used that money to buy a new Mercedes and you could drop your kids off at school in style. You wouldn't want to drop them off in, say, an 11-year-old Land Rover Discovery with 125,000 on the clock, would you?

Now the repo guys have come for your car and the bank is coming for your house and Obama wants me to give up what I've earned, to pay for something you haven't, but want to keep.

This is the world view of the Community Organizer: There are poor people in this neighborhood who have less than they want. There are rich people in the next neighborhood who have more than they need.

If you are a Community Organizer you try and even things out.

If you are the Community Organizer-in-Chief you get to do this on a national scale and that is exactly what Barack Obama is planning to do.

All John Galt
Every one of us that have played by the "rules," obeyed the conscripts of prudence regarding our personal financial situation and have saved and made sacrifices in order to enjoy bites of the great American pie. We are all John Galt. Now, how does that novel end again?!

odd juxtiposition
Galen complains that Obama's foreclosure plan is targeted towards people who were irresponsible. His evidence for this is not part of the plan, but the fact that people are wondering if it is part of the plan. Then he mentiones in passing that the plan does not help people who used their homes as perpetual credit lines, that is the people Galen had just been suggesting we should be upset that they were being subsidized.

He doesn't seem to see the conflict there.

Similarly he complains that Obama does not want people buying better stuff, but offers no evidence that that is part of any Obama plan. In fact the only part of the Obama plan given is one that Galen admits he might agree with.

Kin of strange. An income tax shift back to 1990's raters doesn't really seem likely to spell doom for the super rich. Many of them became super rich during the '90s.

Lon: PLEASE Learn To Write
You're little squib entitled "Odd Juxtaposition" is a grammatical and logical mess.

I assume you're one of those losers who signed up for a $750k mortgage on a $50k salary. If so, I want to tell you (and Mr. Obama) "Your mortgage is your problem; DON'T MAKE IT MINE.

Q. If you have a fundamental problem with that concept, please explain.

Incredulous Asks ...

"We are all John Galt. Now, how does that novel end again?!"

It ends by you b@stards leaving me, Eddie Willers, stranded out in the desert, instead of taking me with you to Galt's Gulch.

Ms. Rand was a brilliant political philosopher (albeit is below-average writer). But her solution is one that won't work for a vast majority of the populace.

So until all of you supermen actually do "shrug" and leave the rest of us in the lurch, I'll keep on working my tail off, overpaying my taxes, and hoping that someone will stop this Obamanation before we are truly ruined.

Police talk by Obama
If it were not serious it would be a wry joke. The graduating police cadets he talked to were scheduled to have no jobs because there was no money in the budget. So guess what--the deus ex machina showed up and "our" justice department, on the very day of Obama's talk at their graduation, suddenly discovered one and a quarter million to pay their salaries to the end of the year. Do you hear the music, tiny tim? Benevolent leader magically presents salaries to downtrodden police cadets. Why it almost as touching as Michelle Obama's visit to the D.C. soup kitchen yesterday (were the kids there too?) Nothing like good old presidential philanthropy where it presumably will do some (political ) good. Or will it just blow away or backfire? As our Victorian predecessors used to say--"the poor are always with us". So lets thank God and hold on to what we have left and prepare for the next election.By the way, the food for the soup kitchen came from the white house. Should it not have been paid for by the Obamas since it clearly did not have any official government-supported purpose?

Victorians read too
The Victorians may have said "the poor are always with us", but only because they read the Bible.

If you don't know Obama by now ...
You will never, never know him ...

Obama was trained for his community organizing activities by Saul Alinsky’s Industrial Areas Foundation, which uses Alinsky’s principals to train activists.

Understanding Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals” is key to understanding Obama. Republicans ... wake up. You are playing patty-cake, Obama wants to destroy you!

The Purpose of the Rules “ a mass power organization which will change the world … This means revolution.”

Of Means and Ends

“You do what you can with what you have and clothe it with moral arguments.”

Lying to the benighted is justified when you are so smart.

The Education of an Organizer –

o “In the beginning, the organizer’s first job is to create the issues or problems.”
o “An organizer must stir up dissatisfaction…”.

Isn’t this what Reverends Wright and Pfleger are doing? Bill Ayers? Obama’s community organizing?

Tactics – note that the opposition is “the enemy”.

o “Never go outside the experience of your people.” – Move to the center; don’t alarm them.

o “Whenever possible go outside the experience of the enemy.” – The enemy (Republicans) can’t believe that Obama is a real radical.

o “Make the enemy live up to there own rulebook.” – Keep them on the defensive by calling their criticisms racist”.

o “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” – Watch Jon Stuart, Keith Olberman, Michael Moore.

o “ … In a fight, almost anything goes. It almost reaches the point where you stop to apologize if a chance blow lands above the belt.” – Anything goes when you are so smart and so certain you are right.

o “You cannot risk being trapped by the enemy in his sudden agreement with your demand.” – Barack isn’t serious about unity and compromise – he is serious about winning taking power.

o “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” – now you understand the never ending personal attacks on Bush, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh....

To mur
The police cadets you saw on TV today all got pink slips a few months ago because their community had a huge shortfall and could not afford as many policemen as it needed---some had to be terminated, in this case new cadets who would not even be sworn in. The stimulus bill provided money for that community to hire more police, so the cadets got called back and were sworn in today. Do you find that hard to understand? And with Republicans screaming that the Stimulus Bill is just a lot of wasteful spending, Obama used this case to illustrate to the American public that there is method to his madness. PS: every one of those new cops will be spending a paycheck---which will benefit merchants in that community---and their town now has more police protection. Sounds like a win-win situation. Do you think that making snotty comments about it is in some way helpful to the United States? Maybe you could explain that philosophy to the rest of us.

I Have a Health Care Plan
My health plan is based on the Cuban model. Some people point to Cuba's health care as something we should follow and I agree.

Here's how it would work.

An American citizen gets a job making at least 25,000.00 a year to support a family of four.

The family rents a run-down, two room apartment (not two bedrooms, just two rooms) with no air-conditioning, for around $300.00 to $350.00 per month. Run-down apartments like that are fairly easy to find.

The bread-winner of the family walks, rides a bicycle or takes the bus to work -- carrying his rusty metal lunch-box with some rice or cold soup in it.

Mom can spend her day washing clothes by hand, hanging them out to dry, cooking the rice and beans for dinner, while sweeping the floor of dead cockroaches. Or if it's that time of the month, she can scrap bits and pieces of soap from around the bathtub to help them make it another day until they get get some more.

When the father gets home in the evening, he can eat his dinner then sitdown to watch his favorite TV shows with the family, on either of the 3 stations he's able to pick up with his new rabbit-ears. Afterwards, the family can retire to bed in the other room.

On the weekends, the father can have some fun. The father can play dominoes on the rusty card table with the other men, as they all chip-in a dollar or two for a bottle of rum. The kids get to play in the street while Mom is busy cooking some more rice for the men after they've gotten drunk and are ready to eat.

...With all the money the family will save by living like this, they can afford all the health care they want and still have enough to save for their kids' college education.

If the Cubans can do it, so can we!

My plan is appropriately entitled: Terry's 2009 Health Care Reform Bill.

Well....
The problem is of course, the people with $300,000.00 plus homes and Mercedes are getting government help.
Used to be the $600.00 per month you pay for your health care was all the poor slob had to spend all month on everything, and there was no home, no mercedes, and the one room, shared bathroom, efficiency apartment was where you wouldn't be caught even in the daytime.
It appears to me the problem is everyone is eligible for welfare now - and by everyone I mean everyone.
Why are you even talking about a Mercedes or a home ?
See, the new world order is everyone is poor - I guess except the very ultra rich. I wonder if Obama still qualifies for poor - or did he surpass that when he did his criminal home deal with Rezko ?
Mercedes and $300,000.00 homes for the poor...

Stop the Madness
There are many on this web site advocating vigorous resistance to the administration’s plan to turn the US into a social democracy like those of Europe. That is the real purpose of the $787 Billion “stimulus” that was just passed. They intend to take over the banking system and health care for starters. They will not change course until forced to! Those of us who like Rush want the President to fail in this attempt need a plan to do just that – force the congress & administration to change its present course. I believe the best way for us to do that is to convince the Chinese to stop buying US debt. We may be able to do that by insulting them. So I am proposing that on April 15 – the date proposed for “tea parties” across this nation we add a flag burning ceremony to the festivities. The flag to be burned would naturally be a Chinese flag. By doing this we may persuade them to stop buying US debt. I realize the result would be painful but the Chinese are planning to stop buying our debt anyway. So we would just be expediting the process – hopefully in time to rescue our country from the ravages of socialism. Below is a link where Chinese flags can be purchased.

Thoughts on holding "Summits"
One of the things I came to dread as a member of management, was the mandatory meetings of all management staff to "brainstorm" issues facing the company.

We were all "empowered" to be the "champions of change" and to create the plans and policies that would solve real problems. And then we would all break into our "little groups."

As with the president's "summits," we forged plans in our "little groups, presented our ideas, all got "attaboys" for our efforts and left with a feeling that we actually accomplished something.

Months would go by, nothing got implemented, the problems persisted and then we were all called together again to address the problems, and break into our "little groups."

Little groups are useless at the management level and just plain stupid at the executive but then that is what "community organizers" do, stupid useless things.

Are you talking about a company bringing in a
Carpetbagger er consultant to teach you all how to be empowered, and gave the big shots
promises of untold millions in wealth if they scrapped the tried and true money making methods in place, and went to ther Drucker or
a clone of the Drucker model? If so My husband went through it, was plant mgr., expert in his field but his expertise and almost 30 yrs experience got in the way of the Carpetbagger
and he was terminated. Carpetbagger promised huge financial growth in 5 years..he got husbands office and job..and he failed. Husband went on to start up competitors which
cost his original company and the only real competitor they had, millions..needless to say they weren't too happy.

Needless to say
The original company was run by third generation
family and they let pride get in the way of common sense. I think they expected my guy to just fade away instead of working in his field.
And I think that's what the Chicago Thuggery
i.e. W.H. wants those of us who voted against the O to do..just sit down, shut up and don't
do anything until we are told..otherwise we
aren't being fair to the elected criminals running the show now...we have to give it a chance. No, we have to start being fired up
competitors, not quitting when everythin seems so bleak. The first thing my husband did following his termination was go away alone and pray for guidance. We have that weapon, and it's a powerful one..PRAYER. God promised
Abraham even though He knew there weren't any,
that if just 10 righteous men were found, he'd spare Sodom/Gomorrah. Because He knew there weren't that story was for us..we have many more
righteous praying people than 10 standing in the Gap..as things get worse, more Americans will be seeking answers.

The Rich Go Toward Cash Only
In Africa there is a saying 'cash and carry'. This means everyone pays for whatever they want using CASH ONLY.

If the middle class stop whining long enough to realize that the socialist redistribution does not work and has never worked in the past, they will begin to know, that the rich are not stupid.

The rich made money and built wealth because they are smart (don't quote Madoff and other thugs), I am talking about the upper middle class americans who worked decades to build their wealth.

The rich are now working on a cash only basis. Obama's policies are not only destroying the stock market, they are encouraging people to work for cash only. The illegal aliens have it figured out - if you get paid cash, Obama does not need to know what you have. Now, it's time to change the way the 'rich' do business. They are using cash and not reporting it.

Who will Obama tax to keep his surge in spending? Try CA as an example of what will happen at a federal level in an Obama's administration.

KEEP THE CHANGE!

Lon - get a grip and logical argument
Obama has said 'he is not bothered by the gyrations of the market'. Most upper class americans and middle class americans, actually 2/3rds of our citizens have their retirement and college funds invested in the market.

Based on the laws of percentages: If a person has 2 dollars and the market losses 50% (like it has), the person now has $1 in the market. In order for the person to break even, the market has to move up 100%.

2/3rds of americans have lost so much of their retirement and college education money that they feel like they are starting over again. And this is the group Obama calls 'rich'.

Imagine what will happen to the other group Obama calls 'struggling americans'?

Obama's mishandling of the economy and then GIVING 900million to his muslim brothers in Gaza when americans can't pay mortages because THEY LOST JOBS, is dispicable and divisive.

Obama's election will cost EVERY AMERICAN, even the 'struggling ones' because the cost of goods and services offered by the 'rich' will go up to make up for the tax hikes. Simply put, you will pay more for milk, bread and everything else you buy because the provider/seller has to pass on the new cost of taxes.

USE LOGIC AND KEEP THE CHANGE!

Rich, You don't get it
In the Land of Obama there are 3 categories of citizens: elites, chumps, and dolts.

Elites are entitled to Prada handbags. After all they take care of the dolts and that is hard work.

The dolts get free stuff: checks, handouts and mortgage relief. Because they are dolts they pay no taxes. They don't need Prada handbags as they get a pretty good deal.

The chumps are productive citizens who work hard to maintain the lifestyles of the elites and the dolts. Elites make sure that chumps don't have enough to buy Prada handbags. After all those are for the elites.

Chumps who wise up become dolts.

See it is all very simple in the Land of Obama.

Community Organizer
This was a great article. I have always said that I don't care what someone else has. If they worked for it they deserve it. I have family members who own nice automobiles (Range Rover, Lexus, Mercedes, etc), but I am not jealous. Hell I know they worked hard for what they have. I also know if I want to drive something like that, hard work (blood sweat and tears) will pay off.

I think the comment by R2B2(Reply 24) which you characterized as "trite, lofty, self-important BS" is commonly called responsible behavior by rational people. The characteristics described by R2B2 were probably the same valued by our Founding Fathers. There is no right to succeed, in America, only a right to try.

Saul Alinsky
The Right Wing, most of whom I suspect had never heard the phrase "community organizer" until Sarah Palin mocked Obama as a community organizer, continues to demonize Saul Alinsky. Check this out: when I was in school, I took a course in how to work helpfully with people in a church parish. The school was a very formal, fully credentialed Roman Catholic institution. The professor teaching the course was a priest. And the course was organized around the teachings of Saul Alinsky. Example: if you are working in a poor parish where the parishoners are living in a slum, in substandard housing where the landlord refuses to supply heat and hot water and fix the elevators so that old folks have to walk up 6 floors, what can you do to put pressure on the landlord to comply with the law? Another example: if your parish happens to include a large population of mentally ill homeless people who are being illegally bothered by the police and the business community, how do you make the trouble-makers stop, if asking nicely doesn't work? Alinsky spells it out---he tells you how to get necessary help for those who are helpless. (If you've heard of Jesus Christ, you may get the general idea here---something about helping "the least of these".) Under the circumstances, and under the protective arm of the Church, we were working for a good and a very Christian cause. I can't imagine how anyone could construe that as Communist or evil or whatever else conservatives are saying about Alinsky. There's a saying that sympathy is just impatience of the heart to get rid of guilt and discomfort unless you are willing to go an extra mile to REALLY help the person you feel sorry for---and that's what Alinsky teaches---how to REALLY help. "Please fix the toilet" has not meant diddly to a lot of crooked landlords. Rent strikes and protests and going to the media have gotten that toilet fixed.

To Rodd Republican: Having is Deserving?
Re your statement that "if somebody has worked for what he has, he deserves it"---yesterday in a doctor's waiting room I was reading a magazine called CS Luxury, some such title. It showed page after page of luxury merchandise such as diamond-encrusted earphones for a Walkman, price $15,000. The NY Timescarries ad after ad for $1000 high-heeled sandals, $3000 handbags, and $50,000 necklaces, and its classifieds show columns of apartments that sell for $5 million plus a monthly maintenance fee of $5000. What makes you think that everyone who can afford these things "deserves" them? Did Bernie Madoff deserve the penthouse where's he's been on luxurious house arrest for months? I know someone who inherited $10 million which she did absolutely nothing to deserve, except be born. You say "if someone has worked for what he has...", I hear you, but in a society that worships and rewards wealth, there is no way to distinguish between hard workers, crooks, and freeloaders because once they have the money, we treat them all the same. For 30 years now, since Reagan, the pendulum has swung very far to the right, rewarding all wealth, and making this happen has severely damaged our middle class. What's wrong with letting the pendulum move back toward the center? Please note that as our focus has been more on creating and maintaining wealth for a few, the condition of the many has gotten much, much worse with our honorable and hard-working middle class moving toward poverty and into poverty. How is this reflective of American values?

Lilly, Required Reading
The Theory of Moral Sentiments by Adam Smith.

Deserving isn't the right question. The question is whether the proper remedy for these resentments of some people that other people have too much (by what standard) and are insufficiently generous (by what standard)is government coercion. Alynski's thesis is that government role was to ensure outcomes are sufficiently (by what standard) equal.

That is the argument: should government use its heavy, coercive hand because some feel that others have too much and are insufficiently generous? Many, myself included, believe the sacrifice in personal opportunity and liberty is too great to have government leveling the playing field.

If you don't like the fact that some people spend lavishly why don't you start your criticism with the Chief Executive of Redistribution, B. Hussein Obama? Did Barry set a good example by flying to Denver to sign his alleged stimulus package? Did Barry set a good example sending Biden to a posh resort to talk with union fat cats? Nope. The rules they would have ordinary Americans live under don't apply to them, which includes taxation, spending lavishly, and reducing our carbon footprint.

Lilly, According to the Founding Fathers
our rights to life, liberty, and the PURSUIT of happiness were granted the the Creator. I'm sure you've heard those words somewhere.

Government has assumed the role of moral arbiter for questions of life with abortion, "death with dignity", and even infanticide in instances of botched abortions. Barry in particular has advocated for infanticide.

As we are discussing, you would advocate that government takes our liberties in order to ensure an outcome that you FEEL is just. There was no assurance by the Founding Fathers of more than an opportunity to pursue your dreams. Yet you would approve of government coercion to provide for those it feels -- make no mistake the government becomes THE authority in this approach -- needs its help.

In your world view that which is granted by our Creator is subsumed by government to achieve some nebulous goal of social justice. The Founding Fathers knew that if government can grant a right then government can take it away -- liberty is lost. That is why they told us the rights are natural rights granted by the creator.

What you and others of your ilk miss is that it is up to SOCIETY and its instruments to help those who need help. Government, as usual, is a poor substitute for society and whatever they achieve is accomplished at the far too high cost of a loss of liberty.

s in CA is the prototype CA voter who thinks the government is the answer to all our problems and that a government of, by and for public empolyee unions governs best.

Yes here in CA we are living proof that with the proper direction of the Dims in Sacramento you can have a $20 billion deficit, lowest credit rating of any state, unemployment through the roof, home values dropping like the Titanic, gays screaming in the streets for their "rights", all taxes going straight up, businesses and the native born fleeing the state and undocumented immigrants receiving in state tuition rights.

Just received a list of the ten worst cities in America with the Dims once again in charge of these same hellholes for many many years. There is no cure for terminal stupidity! Detroit, Chicago, DC,? Do these ring a bell?
