Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Former Senator Tom Daschle withdrew from consideration to be President Obama's Secretary of Heath and Human Services Tuesday afternoon because he had a woman problem.

The punditocracy is strongly suggesting that an editorial in the New York Times Tuesday morning was the determining factor. The Times' wrote: We believe that Mr. Daschle ought to step aside and let the president choose a less-blemished successor.

Tom Daschle did not withdraw because the New York Times didn't like the way he handled his taxes. Tom Daschle withdrew because of a woman.

Daschle is a Member of the CLUB. I mean THE CLUB. This is THE CLUB which grants its members unlimited numbers of do-overs (except if the Justice Department shows up with an indictment, then THE CLUB cannot remember your name).

Daschle was probably going to skate on the $140,000 in taxes and the interest he had to pony up because he hadn't understood that someone giving you a car and driver for your personal use is taxable as income.

The Senate would have confirmed him because (a) he was a former Member of the Senate; (b) he was the Democratic Leader of the Senate and (c) he was getting three or four mil a year as a "consultant" which is the life just about all current Members of the Senate want to lead when they leave The Club.

Also, Daschle wears those cool glasses which make him look really smart.

Unfortunately for Mr. Daschle there was a woman in his life that he didn't even know was in his life. Her name is Nancy Killefer. Ms. Killefer was a consultant with the über-management consulting firm of McKinsey & Company.

Follow me here.

Ms. Killefer had been appointed by Mr. Obama to be the Administration's "Chief Performance Officer" which is a new position. Her job, as near as I can tell, was supposed to be looking at what the Executive Branch was doing and looking for ways to make the Executive Branch do it better.

Yeah. Right.

Anyway, it came to light on Tuesday AM that according to the Washington Post:

In 2005, the District of Columbia filed a $946.69 tax lien on Killefer's $1.7 million home in the affluent Wesley Heights neighborhood of Northwest Washington "for failure to pay the unemployment compensation tax."

Nine hundred bucks. Killefer probably spent more than that at Bloomies after McKinsey bonus day.

Nevertheless, in short order Ms. Killefer withdrew from consideration as the Performance Babe joining the ranks of those other WOMEN who had to withdraw because of tax problems: Zoe Baird, Kimba Wood (Clinton picks for AG) and Linda Chavez (Bush 43 pick for Labor).

This is the rule in Washington: If you are a woman and haven't paid an amount of taxes which doesn't even include a comma, you are T.O.A.S.T.

If you are, however, the President of the New York Fed and couldn't sort out $25,000 worth of tax liabilities, well - that's just guy stuff. Boys will be boys and all that and you can still be confirmed as Secretary of the Treasury.

If you are a former Democratic Senate Leader and you owed more than $128,000 in back taxes, that's something of an issue, but certainly not, by itself, a disqualification.

There was no way, on the same day that a WOMAN named Nancy had to leave because of a $900 miss, that a MAN named Tom could be allowed to continue after screwing up his taxes by an amount which includes the words "one hundred" and "thousand."

The highly touted Obama Transition Team which caused the Washingon Press Corps to swoon over the quality of its picks now reads: Three gone (if you include Bill Richardson); one damaged (Timothy Geithner) and who-knows-what is yet to come.

I think Daschle would have made it, had it not been for a woman.

Where are they ?

You know...all the slinky,smelly,belly-crawling libturds who unquestionably pontificate & worship the Moonbat Messiah's every utterance.Seems like they have little to say the last couple of weeks.

Now now
billybob, is that a nice way to talk about
your masters? That could get you in real trouble you know, they are just volunteering their time to work in government to help you?
You are such an ingrate..I mean you are living
in utopia, Rte 138 is a demonstration project
of how government works in our native state. Now, don't be so selfish, with such great
patriotic leaders that would make old Sam Adams
and the Adams's green with envy it's only just
and right that the smell be spread around from sea to shining sea. Why it's ready reeking in the state I now live in..so be thankful we have
such enlightened leaders.

Whoops typo
make that: already reeking. I hate that when that happens..sorry

Old Crows Do Get their Comeuppitence
and that does include Mr. Galen. The repugs are just a guilty of tax issues as anyone else; oh, I forgot, you guys get tax breaks/relief; the rest of us get tax bills - which we are required to pay before April 15th or a penalty kicks in!
Sounds like sour grapes to me; you are just indignant because someone other than yourself is now not only stomping the grapes, but drinking the wine!
President Obama showed a lot of character (and isn't that what the repugs always tout as their "secret weapon" - character?) in admitting mistakes were made. A least he could admit a mistake, which is a lot more than your boy Dubya could do, considering the devastation he wrought the previous 8 years! Soon the positions will be filled and you obstructionist will be on to the next target.

Don't Understand
I just don't get it. Surely all these nominees have the financial resources to hire a good accountant and/or tax attorney to handle their finances especially in the tax area. If their lives are so busy that they can't handle this responsibility that falls to us all by April 15th every year, how can we trust them to fulfill their duties in a public trust job for the federal government?

I don't look upon this as "no big deal" as some people do. If you can't handle the lesser responsiblities of adult life, how can we expect you to handle the requirements of your job?

Beware of undue self-righteousness
Beware of undue self-righteousness, Republicans. The larger problem is the sense of entitlement many people in politics and business acquire when they make it big. Some politicians duck paying taxes, while others employ illegals. (We liberals up here in Mass. loved it when we learned that Mitt Romney had a whole flock of illegals working on his lawn.)

Now when we turn to business, we find corporate execs like the former CEO with his $1.2 million office, or the $50 million jet, or the huge bonuses paid regardless of performance. I'd say those folks certainly had a sense of entitlement, or is that just the free enterprise system at work?

If Obama Wants ANY Credibility...
...Geithner needs to resign, Obama needs to stand up to Harry (I'm-not-working-for-President-Obama)Reid and Nutty Nancy and have the White House write a clean, mean stimulus machine....assuming that ANY kind of a stimilus is the best way to go.

Any bill that grows government just feeds that big, fat, bloated, stinkin', half-dead pile of corruption. Starve the pig even if it means a few Americans have to starve in the process.

Look at our liberal heaven, Cacafornia: Unchecked illegal immigration, unaffordable entitlements, outta control public service unions. If you want to see what wonderful "changes" Obama has promised, just look at the once Golden State now turned to a pile of doo-doo via liberalism.

Daschle's wife, Linda,
is a big, big lobbyist. So much for "limiting the power of lobbyists". yea, right!

taxes
I don't care if it is a man or a woman if they can not pay their taxes they should not hold public office. These people can not get a free pass because they make so much money they hardly notice $34,000, they made a "mistake" of $124,000 or any other excuse someone makes on their behalf. The truth is Holder, Geithner and Clinton are not worthy to hold the offices they have been appointed and if this was a Republican president people with the same issues would not have been confirmed and America knows it.

to Alice in GA
Their is a big difference between tax shelters, tax breaks and tax reliefs and not paying taxes you owe. Tax shelters, breaks and reliefs are in the tax code and therefore legal and if you qualify for them you can claim them too. Not paying your taxes for whatever reason is NOT legal.

to Alice in GA
There is also a big difference between people who earn their money by producing goods and services that people want and those in the government who are living off of the money from the goods and services others promote while the government does everything it can to reduce production. If only we had four more years of "mistakes".

Alice
I'm sorry Alice, you seem to have a comprehension problem. Your moral relativism seems to almost be a religion?

I would be interested in seeing you post a suggestion as to how we can remove this cesspool that is called DC? These seem to be your corrupt politicians in control now. What are you going to do to control them.

Me personally? I just unsubscribed from all things Republican and I sent each org. a letter explaining why. It seems them have become too liberal or Democrat lite to fit in with my Patriotic and Constitutional ideas and positions.

You are correct, they all are corrupt. I'm trying one at a time, to change mine. What are you doing, except for practicing your moral relativism?

In case you don't understand "moral relativism" try Wiki.

HKC

Off topic but
It is also noticeable that (Lunnon-based) McKinsey & Co is also the company which ex-Soviet airline Aeroflot (or "Aeroflop") hired for an image redo--akin to relabelling a cheeseburger as "sandwiche du biftek haché au gratin" (which could possibly confoozle an English-only speaker not-at-all-cognisant with any French), even which Aeroflop managed to UNDO royally on 2008/12/28 when it attempted to allow a drunk to captain its Moscow-to-JFK flight (and was prevented by the passengers).

write your elected officials
Rather than trying to oneup each other......get busy making your points to your elected officials.

Moral Relativism?
What has that got to do with the topic at hand or do you just see everything in terms of your take on morals? Failing or delaying to pay a tax bill in a timely matter is not immoral; it is a secular issue that does have monetary consequences and in the last 3 cases, political consequences. And consequences from the repugs of all people!
I think all of you rabid repug should step back, take a long deep breath and "go along to get along" for awhile [just like you expect us Dems to do in the past]. This fiscal mess was more your doing than ours; but we are used to cleaning houses, taking our the trash, balancing checkbooks and paying taxes. We will get this mess cleaned up in due time and probably not without a few hickups. So chill out and chill out big time! It's our turn to govern and we will do just fine. At least we don't have to tell a bunch of lies to get our country into a totally unnecessary war! Now that is moral relativism!!!

Alice
Christianity requires rendering to Caesar what is his, so not paying taxes is a moral issue.

Why don't you just take your moonbat arse back through the looking glass?

TAXES
I'D LIKE TO HEAR WHAT TAFT,PIRATE ROB,AND HAL HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THIS!MAYBE EVEN CHOLIE!

TWO - TWO - TEN!!!!!!!!!
It won't stop until we make it stop. We the people are demanding that the swamp which is Wash. D.C., be drained. The most effective means to do so is: Two Terms. House, and Senate.
Next: No lobbying or being in the employ of a lobbying firm or organization for you or any family member for TEN years after having been termed or voted out of office. That's it. So simple. So effective. No more professional politician. The "representative" class we send to Wash. would actually have to have a job, (meaning work for a living) after their legislative efforts were completed.
I'm beginning a grass-roots effort for this campaign. More later. Thank you.

Just so we're clear
Alice, just so we're clear, please let me know which statement is correct.

A) Everyone must pay their taxes
B) Republicans don't have to pay taxes but Democrats do
C) Democrats don't have to pay taxes, but Republicans do
D) No one has to pay their taxes

The result would have been the same
if a man resigned for a piddly amount. The point was it made Tom look bad. You are going to have to find another platform to complain about women's mistreatment.

For a picture of the Pelosi Pig go to:
PresidentialBalls.com

Hey, maybe she
cam sue for discrimination under the new law Obama signed last week!

Honestly, this administration--the most ethical administration ever--is just amazing. Six nominees with "issues." Is that a record?

Billybob, you ralk so cute
I guess the reason Dems. are always complaining the rich get all the tax breaks is Dems. just ignore paying taxes and envy those that do?

Here's the current list: Chuck Rangel--didn't know he had to pay real estate taxes on property he owned--he heads the House Appropriations Comm. that's busy throwing away our tax monies daily--

Barnie Frank--who thought as long as he defended the Fannies and Freddies that made him huge contributions he didn't have to be an ordinary citizen and pay taxes--

Timothy Geithner, former head of the Fed for NYC (for God's sake) and now head of the US Treasury could NOT EVEN BE EMPLOYED BY THE IRS IF HE DIDN'T PAY HIS TAXES--lied that he didn't know he had to pay them, lied that he paid them when he only paid 1/2, and then tried to use statue of limitations to avoid paying his payroll taxes--

Tom Daschle, former majority leader of the Sen. that hypocritically lorded it over Reps. as if he sat on the right hand of Jesus tried to pretend he didn't know a car and driver were income--

and then Nancy Killeher, whoever she is, also didn't pay her DC taxes--in a city that is falling apart around the very ears of the elected idiots who work there.

Throw them all out. Write daily. Blogging here doesn't let the Reps. know they should just say "No" and sit on their hands and let the Dems. dig their own holes.

Jailtime
Geithner and Daschle should be in jail. Geithner needs to resign.

Idiots are happy that Obama said he "made a mistake". Poor judgement is not a mistake. Income tax evasion is not a mistake. Not producing a valid US birth certificate is not a mistake.
Lefties are always talking about "mistakes".

WHAT WE CAN DO..A BEGINNING
1, CAPITALISTIC SOCIALISM.E PROFIT .LET THE EMPLOYEES OWN OR AT LEAST SHARE THE PROFITS OF THE COMPANIES OR INSTITUTIONS THAT THEY WORK FOR 2 REPAIR BRIDGES AND HIGHWAYS, AND BUILD A NATIONAL RAILWAY NETWORK...WE MOVE GOOD THE MOST INEFFICIENT WAY POSSIBLE, BY TRUCK, HELLO!3 BUILD SCHOOLS INSTEAD OF PRISONS..IF WE EDUCATE, THERE WOULD BE A WHOLE LOT LESS OF INCARCERATION.... AND IT SURE IS CHEAPER TO EDUCATE. A FLAT NATIONAL SALES TAX OF 12%,TAX DEDUTIONS ONLY ON MORTGAGES, EDUCATION, AND MEDICAL,AND FINALLY..ALL WHO TAKE HOME 1,000,000 AFTER TAXES GIVE BACK 1% WHICH GOES DIRECTLY TO THE FOLKS WHO EDUCATE US, TAKE CARE OF US IN THE HOSPITALS, CLEAN OUR STREETS, AND PROTECT OUR STREETS...THERE IS MORE..ANY ONE ANYWHERE INTERESTED IN POSITIVE CONVERSATION

VERY GOOD ARTICLE
GOOD POINT

THE LIBERAL NEWS MEDIA !
IS WALKING ON EGG SHELLS THEY DONT WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS STUFF!IF THIS WAS PRESIDENT BUSH THEY WOULD ALL LAUGH AT THE FISH FRY!BUT THIS IS NOT THE WAY THEY WANT TO SEE THEIR WONDER DOG!THE SICK MEDIA,ONLY TAKES UP FOR THE DEMO-RATS!

Daschle the sleeze.

Daschle has been a sleeze for years. Hes one of hte guys that drove up the deficts under Bush then sits back and complains about GOP Spending.

In case you don't recall, Daschle held up the Homeland Security Bill until the House and Senate passed the bloated Agricultural Bill that gave 85% of the funding to hugh Corporate Farmers. The Whole time Daschle claimed the small family farmer needed relief.

So people who like to point fingers at Bush for spending need to look no further then Tom Daschle.

Murder is a secular issue
According to the morally myopic Alice (3:54 post), failing to pay taxes when you have the money and know you owe it is only a secular problem with no aspect of morality associated with it.

This attitude reflects the standard morally relativistic leftist philosophy that there is no right and wrong - there is only the legal and illegal. Thus murder is not wrong in any intrinsic sense. It is only wrong because there happens to be a law against it.

To these people, not getting caught in a lie is the same thing as telling the truth. To these people, there is no moral distinction to be made between any two actions that are not legally prohibited.

People like Alice are OK with giving Daschle a free pass, because so long as "The Government" that makes the laws and supposedly enforces them is willing to ignore his conduct, then he has in fact done nothing wrong.

Gestell: Educatioinal Industrial Complex
Gestell #6:
Really? When, we turn to modern businesses, we find Presidents/CEO's of 99% of all so-called public & private colleges/ universities w/ obscene six/seven figure salaries, supported by bloated, over-paid educrat staffs & over-paid professors supporting mental m*sterbation degree programs (e.g., black-studies, women's studies, etc.) while receiving 100's of millions of taxpayer support dollars,e.g., Pell Grants.

When you bloviate about businesses- try looking the mirror and try to rationalize your value as a propogandist masquerading as an educator.

Sandman
Thank you for your exceptionally clear comments. Perfectly stated without preaching, and without insult.

alice
did you say you dems were used to paying taxes? thee last few bo picked dont seem to pay thers.

alice
did you say you dems were used to paying taxes? thee last few bo picked dont seem to pay thers.

Alice
I think the next four years is going to be quite enjoyable. I'm going to watch people like you squirm as you try to defend what doesn't deserve to be defended. Face it, the guy has done nothing special yet, and so many things have gone wrong.

Gestelle is disingenuous ...
once again. And I say disingenuous to be kind. Some might say "LIAR" by an intended omission.

I'm no Romney supporter, but in his defense, he hired a lawn service that then hired illegal workers. How far do you go to make someone liable for the work that is performed on ones home? Is he supposed to hire investigators for every service performed on his behalf? What about the mechanic or auto dealership that hires illegal workers. The local liberal rag got caught with their pants down a few years ago when they hired a slew of illegal aliens who had forged social security numbers. But like always with libs, it's someone elses fault.

It's amazing the depths to which liberals will stoop to make others look as rediculous as them.

Why Harp on Daschle?
Since Daschle has already withdrawn his name, I am wondering why townhall (and certain parties on FOX) continue to talk about him. I am starting to get the impression of a right-wing strategy to trash all of Obama's appointments, then you can say he has a corrupt administration, then you can start talking about impeachment, then you can get rid of him. You don't think much of two-party government, do you?

lilly
Is it too much to ask that Obama find appointees who have paid their taxes? Bush was able to do it; is Obama's pool of recruits too small to find a couple dozen tax-paying people?

Heck, he had to pluck a Republican to head Commerce; apparently no tax problems with THIS one. Such a shame he can't seem to find Democrats without problems.

lilly, at least Obama was smart enough..
to purchase impeachment insurance. His name is Joe Biden. Who the heck wants that?

Tod Kozeluh
Lexington, KY

J.Gregg
He just handed Obama complete control of the senate. What a doofus

Polly
As most Americans do so often, you miss the point? The point is, his pool is so small. Americans have a Treasury secretary by "Default". Republicans have said; "He's the only one for the Job". What should happen to Treasury,if he dies? America no longer produces "Great Thinkers". Mediocre is the order of the Day and it did not just start. Bush was better than was shown but no great thinkers. People are no longer dedicated to being great, they just want to be "Rich"! Unfortunately, they may end up being neither.. So saddddd....

What is there to understand?
Don't understand? Of course these clowns hire tax wizards. The wizards tell them they can't do such and such and they ignore the advice. After all, they are part of the political elite. Elitists comprehend the tax laws they write as not applying to themselves. It is that simple. Now go lie down in the corner like a good tax payer.

Shuddup Republicans
So Richardson, Daschle, Geithner, Panetta and Kelliher, et al, have violated trust, so what? Do we really want to go through another Clinton style search for substitute officers? I mean, this list has known quantities. They are ethics challenged. They are crooks and hypocrites! We can deal with crooks and hypocrites, but do we really want to go down lists of candidate secretaries? Remember Janet Vader was number four on the list for attorney general and what a disaster she was. Lets cool it and let Obama have his way with appointments, otherwise he will pull Janet's brother Darth out of the hat, along with several other family members!!!!

take hypocrisy out of the dictionary
Let's be clear... Daschle was the quintessential tax and spend big govt democrat. He's a total phony. He's actually a hard core insider and lobbyist who cheats on his taxes to the tune of 6 figures.

He's unethical to be polite about it.

You might as well take hypocrisy out of the dictionary if you can defend this sanctimonious butt.

If you preach that high taxes
are fair and good for America and you are in a position to impose those taxes as a legislator. And then you turn around and cheat on your own taxes and proceed plead "innocent confusion" on the matter.

YOU SHOULD GO TO JAIL.

Dems PAY their taxes! I know
because I pay a tax preparer to do mine yearly so as to avoid making too many mistakes. Most of the people I know are Dems and have been for years; come to think about it, there are a few repugs in my social circle and they also have a professional tax preparer do their tax returns to. We all PAY our taxes.
I don't mind paying taxes most of the time.
My taxes help build roads and bridges; my taxes pay for new sewer projects and water managment programs. My taxes put lots of kids in school [I don't have kids]. My taxes have helped put a human being on the moon. My taxes have help to discover new treatments for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, HIV, SLE, etc. My taxes have paid for all the border patrols you folks so high desire and my taxes support the military and its machinations.
Why my taxes have even bailed out the "masters of the universe" and their financial institutions because these idiot repugs and their ivy league educations haven't equiped them to know right from wrong, etc. I will gladly pay my taxes to help the common good.
