Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Last night President George W. Bush gave his final scheduled speech as President of the United States. At noon next Tuesday, a new President will take the oath of office and the peaceful transfer of power from one American to another will take place as it has 44 times before.

President Bush had been in office for less than eight months when the terrorists struck on September 11, 2001. Ten days later, a relatively untested President said of terrorism, we will "Stop it. Eliminate it. And destroy it where it grows."

The President threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the world saying, "You have a decision to make: You are with us, or you are with the terrorists."

And in that speech President Bush said, "Whether we bring them to justice or bring justice to them; Justice will be done."

In the seven years which have gone by since the goals of the new Administration of George W. Bush were refocused forever, American has been safe from attack. That may not be the case forever; probably will not be the case forever, but unless we are attacked in the next four days it will not have happened on George W. Bush's watch.

If Barack Obama and his Administration does not unravel the safety net woven of intelligence, technology, military power and the will of Americans to prevent an attack, it will not happen on his watch, either.

So much time has gone by since those attacks that they are now shorthanded to "9/11" the same way we shorthand Alex Rodriguez to A-Rod and Jennifer Lopez to J.Lo. The brutal gash that the attacks left on our national psyche are reduced to "where were you when …" as we reach for the wine bottle at a dinner party, like people of my generation ask about the Kennedy assassination or my parents' generation asked of the attack on Pearl Harbor or the death of FDR.

September 11th is no longer central to our everyday thinking - unless we are trying to get on an airplane. It is just one more marker on the continuum of American history. Kennedy, FDR, Pearl Harbor, Black Monday, Fort Sumter, the Declaration of Independence.

The farther back we look, the more distant the markers become because only the most important remain. Time erodes the edges of the sorrow and blurs the images of the horror.

The President said last night:

As the years passed, most Americans were able to return to life much as it had been before 9/11. But I never did. Every morning, I received a briefing on the threats to our nation. And I vowed to do everything in my power to keep us safe.

Perhaps in his memoirs, George W. Bush will tell us what he hoped to accomplish during his Presidency:

A new version of the Monroe Doctrine, perhaps? Raising the countries of Caribbean Basin as well as Central and South America to the social, political and economic level of their counterparts in North America and Western Europe? An overhaul of America's medical and pension systems so we could grow up and grow old knowing that if we lived well and worked hard we would be protected?

A do-over for America's primary and secondary education system? One in which we worry more about teaching children than about babying teachers?

We don't know what the original goals might have been because the goals shifted on September 11, 2001 and the President's principal goal was to "keep us safe." Every day. Every morning when he received the intelligence briefing. The threat report.

The President was not maudlin last night and he has not been during these final weeks of his Presidency. The other night I was honored to have been invited to a reception at the White House which included a photo with the President.

In the decades I have known George W. Bush - back to the days when we (incorrectly) called him "Junior" when his dad was Vice President - he called me Richie.

Until he was elected President. He never called me Richie nor, come to think of it, anything else.

When I was approaching the President for my photograph, introduced by the military aide as "Rich Galen" the President reached over, took my hand and said, "Richie! Thanks for everything you've done."

Back Atchya, Mr. President. Thank you for everything you've done.

You haven't tired. You haven't faltered. You certainly haven't failed.

You've kept us safe.

George did more damage than good
So I wasn't killed by a terrorist this year, yet. But, I don't have the money I used to have, thanks to George and the miscreants he hired to watch over government with blindfolds securely in place. And we're going to have change. Canada won't even accept Obama's friends into their country, so things aren't changing for the better. I think I'll move to Canada. All of you Taxachusetts liberals can have Obama and his socialism.

Reparations for Iraqis
That will be his legacy.

Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel prize winner in economics, writes that the ultimate cost of the Iraq war will be 3 trillion dollars.

I am a conservative, and will use a smaller number.

Let us assume it will be merely 2 trillion American tax dollars invested on behalf of liberating and democratizing Iraqis.

There are about 25 million Iraqis.

Divide 25 million into 2 trillion.

That computes to $80,000 per every Iraqi man, woman and child.

And they make a hero out of the shoe tosser!

But that aside, the Decider's mission to democratize the Muslim world will not come cheap.

There are probably one billion Muslims on our precious planet.

Even if we half what the Decider has spent per each Iraqi, and say the cost to democratize the Muslim world is only $40,000 per individual, that ain't exactly chump change.

The Decider has shown us the way.

American taxpayer must dig far deeper into their pockets for this noble mission to succeed.

The naked greed of Capitalism gone Wild is largely responsible for the mess we are in. As long as Profits over People is the govenment's unstated official agenda, we can be sure that citizens will get short changed and fleeced whenever it is expediant.

*Shareholders got short changed by Wall Street corruption greedy CEO's and rank mismanagement

*Tax Payers got short changed when both Democrats and Republicans awarded a $700 Billion bailout to Wall Street theives.

*American Workers got short changed by having their jobs exported to China and India

*American Families got short changed by illegal alien workers who work for subminimum wage, off the books, paid in cash,

*Innocent American citizens got short changed of Liberty and Freedom when Bush suspended habeas corpus, started using terror/torture prisons permitted under the Patriot Act, and conducted illegal wire taps on American citizens who did no wrong.

As long as Capitalism reigns supreme the wealthy elites will enjoy most all the priveleges and the citizens shall be trampled underfoot.

Thanks for your reply. He should be booted from office along with all incumbents: Democrat and Republican. Incumbency tends to breed laziness, corruption and entitlement in politicians of every stripe. As you may know other Democracies around the world have multiple parties that compete for election and are far more responsive to voters interests and values.

What voters in every state should do is find and finance new independent and third party candidates to run against incumbents and the political machine that poses as a two party system.

As long as Americans reelect Democrats and Republicans, citizens will be abused by their own government and cronyism, hypocracy, and incompetence shall reign supreme.

The AP story about the farewell speech
Hope others saw this "what he said, what he didn't say" critique. How petty and mean spirited! We all know the AP will not adopt a similar format in reporting Obama's speeches.

Thank you, Mr. Bush. I, for one, greatly appreciate your service and leadership.

Bitter clingers
Keep clinging to that "he kept us safe" line "richie". It is the only life preserver you Bushbots have left from the Titanic shipwreck that was the Bush presidency. The GOP will never regain the trust of Americans until we admit to ourselves what a liberal disaster he was.

Kept us safe???...
...he left our entire southern border open and porous? Resulting in damage that we may never recover from?? Right!!

And you, "Richie", did a powerful good job of sabotaging the campaign of FDT, the candidate that might fixed some of the damage done. Bet you got a big "at-a-boy" from John McCain for keeping the dynamic Fred out of the spotlight, obscure and on a bus wandering around the back roads of Iowa, NH and SC. Worked out just as planed didn't it, Richie Boy??? DD

Lessons
I have had pressure in some positions, and been under fire. I cannot imagine the pressure of daily, incessant, and hate filled attacks this President has seen his entire eight years.

Upholding principle through long frustrating first election, 911 disaster, procedures to get UN and US Congress agreements developed and ratified, then to get diplomatic and military working on the ground on the other side of the world, then to have the gutless and clueless resume their backstabbing. All the while still trying to move forward with his agenda to lead the country.

The lesson he leaves us, should we decide to accept it, for every one of us, is that if you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. If you do not like what is going down but have no solution to put on the table, shut up and get to work. The only way the USA will be better for our children is clear thinking about working within the frame of our Laws and our Constitution, not devising new laws to circumvent those.

We as a nation should be sick by now of all the bias, prejedice, backscratching and backstabbing, hypocrisy, acrimony and outright hate, lack of ideas and especially lack of constructive debate that we have had to live with from Congress all the way down to our local paper.

If this is to be the age of not just Hope and Change but survival, we need to get our act together in support of Freedom and Liberty and Capitalism as much as at any point in our history.

YES WE HAVE - YES WE CAN
THE NOBLE EXPERIMENT HAS FAILED

.....The Founders dream of a Constitutional Representative Republic is no more ...

.....There were many mileposts along the way ...the Civil War and Lincoln's power grab of Federal Government power ...TR's socialist views and "Trust Busting" ...1913 and the 16TH & 17TH Amendments and the Federal Reserve ...and then FDR's contempt for the Constitution and admiration of Soviet Communism ...

.....We have gone too far down the road of European Socialism to turn back now ...it's over folks .....COLOSSUS

A WMD is a liberal in office.

Conservative Republican Legislators,

Obama voters have reduced your numbers to the point that the liberals don’t even need RINO votes to pass everything they want, and that’s bad. It’s at the point where Nancy Ex-pelosi-ve is eliminating rules that allow you to have any effect. We need to get Conservatives back in the majority in Congress

WHAT ALL OF YOU MUST DO FROM NOW ON IS UNANIMOUSLY VOTE AGAINST EVERY BILL AND TAX THAT LIBERALS PROPOSE!!! DO NOT VOTE FOR ANYTHING LIBERALS PROPOSE!!! DO NOT GO ALONG TO GET ALONG WITH THE LIBERALS!!! DO NOT GO TO THEIR PARTIES!!! OPPOSE THE LIBERALS IN EVERY WAY!!! JOINING LIBERALS IN ANYTHING IS SELLING OUT AMERICA!!! THEY ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS!!! THEY ARE YOUR AND AMERICA’S WORST ENEMIES, AND WILL DO ANYTHING THEY CAN TO DESTROY BOTH!!!

You cannot stop their bills or even slow them down beyond calling for roll call votes for them. Make everything they pass totally theirs. What you will be doing is getting on record as opposing all the destructive liberal bills.

When all these liberal actions make things much worse, as they will, you can point at the record and show the people that none of you had anything to do with them, and that you had no control over their passage, that all this destruction was caused by liberals.

Then you can tell the people about the tax elimination plan that you proposed that was kept from a vote by the liberals, and other bills that you proposed. You did not vote for the Algore hoax which multiplied the cost of everything many times, and made energy and home heating inaccessible.

Welcome Roland Burris into the Senate. Treat him well. Show him how miserably the liberals treated him. Maybe he will vote conservatively. It won’t hurt to try.

Vote = *****

good job
GREAT JOB PRES. BUSH. Not with you on immigration or the fact you have left two innocent border patrol guys sit in prison but I am SO with you on keeping America safe. You will be known as a very good president. We can only hope Obama will keep everything you put into place exactly where it is and then maybe we can go on about our lives. My fear is that each morn. the entire country will wake up like Pres. George Bush has these last 8 yrs. and NOT be able to go about our business casually.

Just a word
but some including those in Europe are making a big deal about the prase "The War on Terrorism" as if the right words will get the job done of defeating thoses stateless terrrorists who want to control the West. Come on Europe....get some backbone and stand with us with your military and your money. Oh, that's right ...they just didn't like Pres Bush so now we can expect with Pres Obama the Germans will actually fight in Afghanistan and other Europeans will send troops and money.

First
You forgot to include that our President collaborated with the Freemasons to take over the world, subjecting us to the rule of the Skull and Bones, the Tri-Lateral Commission, the Bildebergers, the Romulans, the Klingons, or whatever drool that your Anti-Semitic web site told you to post. It's painfully obvious to any rational individual that you are allergic to facts and truth, choosing to repeat whatever MSNBC tells you to spout. Clinton was too busy suborning perjury, pardoning tax cheats and FALN terrorists and swiping the furniture to issue any warnings, while the rest of your comments are even more fanciful. You might want to try other sources than George Soros for your information, if you have any interest in truthy.

Rich Galen For Press Sec.
Mr. Galen,
You put into words that I myself can understand That Pres.G.W.Bush is a man of great integrety

Al Queada is just warming up
Rich Galen, you said in your article:

"You haven't tired. You haven't faltered. You certainly haven't failed.
You've kept us safe."

Bush's legacy is that he failed to protect America and allowed 9/11 to happen despite warnings from the Clinton administration and dozens more urgent warnings from the Intelligence community including Richard Clark who sent a memo to Bush weeks before 9/11 'Bin Laden determinded to attack inside the USA'.

*You disbanded the CIA's special Bin Laden unit tasked with routing out this terrorist. By disbanding the unit you turned him into a God among Islamic extremists. "Osama" is now the #1 name given to males in Pakistan.

*You tried to sell off our ports and port security off to Dubai.

*You successfully fought against container inspection.Today only 4-6% of containers are inspected. 94-6% slip through without even opening the lid. How many small nukes have been smuggled in already?

*You failed to guard the Mexican border gave amnesty and welfare to illegal aliens, a free pass to the Mexican Mafia and drug gangs, and allowing terrorists to slip into our nation undetected.

*You operated terror/torture prisons which footage plays endlessly on Arab tv and serves as a recruiting tool for terrorists

*You gave billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars to Gen. Mushareff (a military dictator who overthrew Pakistan's democracy) who then gave sanctuary to the Talibam and funnelled the money
into extermists.

*You started an illegal war in Iraq killed over 1 million innocents through carpet bombing and strengthened Iran's hand in the region.

*You've given over $24 Billion to Israel which uses our money to make war on its neighbors and use U.S. military equipment to murder innocents in Palestine and Lebanon.

Your policies have disgraced our nation and made us look weak, corrupt, incompetent, bankrupt, and immoral in the eyes of the world.

Reaganite
I haven't been able to vote all afternoon either; nor can I view the average vote on any article.

As to Dubya, I voted for him twice as well... reluctantly. I got what I wanted on social issues, but he was such a disappointment on fiscal, immigration and foreign policy matters. everyone ponders his presidential legacy. Still, I can't help but feel sorry for him. At least he kept us safe from attack and he didn't disgrace the office as the previous occupant had.

Twenty years since a true conservative
It has been twenty years since a true conservative lived at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Reagan was the last conservative president, I realize the republicans elected two of the Bush clan. These are nothing but liberals with compassion.

those disappointed in Bush...

... CERTAINLY need not be liberal... I voted for him 2x, but holding my nose the last time... talk about the perceived lesser evil!

Much that he did wrong was just OK with the left-- Rx Care for seniors, NCLB, botching S.S. reform, never using the veto to stanch 'Crat largesse-- the latter because he had to buy support for his profligate war of choice in Iraq against the wrong bad Islamics.

All of this was anathema to true fiscal and limited govt. conservatives --> he grew government and increased its intrusion in our lives, he spent like a drunken sailor 'Crat, and he failed to live up to his most basic oath to defend and protects the border of the U.S.

The latter over time may do the most egregious and irreparable harm... Presidente Jorge was OK with a path to citizenship for 12 million ILLEGAL aliens-- the ObaMessiah will likely assure it. [Amnesty John McCain promises to work for it again-- screw you America!] This will mean 60-100 million new mainly poor, and largely ignorant, Hispanic citizens within 20 years per the highly respected Heritage Foundation calculation:

http://www.heritage.org/Research/Immigration/wm1076.cfm

questions
What would meet the definition of a 'Weapon of Mass Destruction'?

Not long after the allied invasion in 2003 American troops found a cache of 550 metric tons of uranium near Baghdad, near the site of Al-Tuwaitha. They kept the discovery under wraps and under guard for 5 years until this year when the uranium was shipped to Montreal, where it is now being used in Canada's nuclear energy program.

1) 550 Metric tons - more than 1,100,000, as in ONE MILLION ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND POUNDS OF URANIUM - would THAT qualify as a Weapon of Mass Destruction?
2) Given the above, might it not follow that the troops made OTHER discoveries that we have not been told about?
3) Why keep the discovery a secret, when it could be used to blow the "Bush lied thousands died" crowd out of the water?

Country first - what a concept.

Source - MSNBC JULY 5, 2008

Voting
Is anyone else finding it impossible to vote on columns? This one's a 1.

poor, misguided Presidente Jorge
where did Jorge NOT go wrong?

Pres. Jorge focused on the wrong bad guys... he got snookered into a war of choice against the wrong Arabs, even as he aided and abetted the REAL threat to America-- the ILLEGAL alien incursion.

I voted 2x for W, but I am sick about it (though Windsurfer and public traitor, do nothing, gigolo Kerry was NOT an alternative). The war in Iraq was a profligate war of choice against the wrong Arabs; Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11, WMD's were irrelevant to the U.S. anyway, and Saddam and Osama were opponents.

We will have spent $3 TRILLION all-in, with thousands killed and maimed-- all because the neoCONS then manipulating the Bush W.H. (Perle, Wolfy, Feith, Libby, and Wurmser... and their fellow pan-Israeli allies braying incessantly in the media--> Krauthammer, May, Kristol, Kagan, Prager, Gaffney, Barone, Medved, Prelutsky) wanted permanent American bases in Iraq for Israel's protection-- the dirty little secret.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_c ontributors/article3419840.ece
http://www.csmonitor.com/specials/neocon/spheresInfluence.h tml

Meanwhile, near-clueless Presidente Jorge believed in open borders, so he failed to uphold his most fundamental oath-- to defend and protect our border. Like Amnesty John McCain, he had made a Faustian deal years ago for employer lobby $ and Hispanic votes, but both quislings failed to get the latter, even as they sold out America to the indigent, ignorant ILLEGAL alien invasion... which will likely leave a legacy of an America morphing into a third world welfare state as ILLEGALS are enfranchised and vote it in.

Finally, RINO Jorge spent $ and grew govt. like a born-again 'Crat in order to buy loyalty for funding his misbegotten war-- swell job there, Jorge Bush!

Someone fix the title, please?
I was a little confused until I reached the end of the article.
