Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

From the Albuquerque Journal:

"Gov. Bill Richardson has withdrawn from his nomination as U.S. commerce secretary, citing concerns about the timing of a federal grand jury investigation involving his administration in New Mexico."

Note the waffle: "citing concerns about the TIMING of a federal grand jury investigation." Not the FACT that there is a federal grand jury investigating Richardson's operation.

According to the Journal, this all has to do with a California financial firm, CDR Financial Programs of Beverly Hills "which received $1.4 million for its work" on a bond issue.

"The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office want to know how" a California financial firm, CDR Financial Programs of Beverly Hills, "got hired in 2004 to work on the $1.6 billion bond issue used to fund highway projects and the Rail Runner commuter train."

What they think happened was the chief executive of the California firm made two contributions totaling [at least] $85,000 to political organizations attached to Richardson. Here's why it raised the eyebrows of the feds:

"The first came six days after CDR was hired as a special adviser on the bond deal; the second was four days before Finance Authority staff recommended the company get the no-bid deal to manage the escrow account."

Whoa! Check, please (literally)! The no-bid deal? Not only a no-bid deal but there doesn't appear to be (what we in the business world would normally call) a contract involved, either. Again from the Albuquerque Journal:

"If you want to look at the formal contracts, you're out of luck. There don't appear to be any."

I know that's way more than you want to know about what the case is all about. Me, too. But that's not the part that is of interest.

President-elect Barack Obama announced the nomination of Peso Bill on December 3. The Journal published the existence of the investigation in August - some four months before Obama tapped Richardson.

The question, then, is: What did Peso Bill tell Obama about the status of that investigation and what his connection might be?

Are no-bid-no-contract million dollar deals in return for campaign donations so pervasive among Obama's political cronies that he and Richardson had a good laugh about it and walked out onto the stage in Chicago to announce the nomination?

Did Richardson promise to shave that cheesy beard if Obama would ignore the existence of a federal grand jury looking into just how Bill did business in Albuquerque?

There is no reason to think that Richardson is going to be indicted in this scandal. No reason to think he's not, either. But, nominations for Cabinet Secretary have been withdrawn for a lot less. The first 317 candidates for Attorney-General suggested by Bill Clinton had to withdraw because they hadn't withheld taxes on the wages they had paid their nannies.

To be fair, George W. Bush's first selection for Labor Secretary, Linda Chavez, had to step aside for the same reason.

And Bernie Kerik, Bush's choice to succeed Tom Ridge as Secretary of Homeland Security, bailed out because, according to the NY Times, "a nanny he had employed appeared to have been in the country illegally and that he had failed to pay taxes on her behalf."

Not paying Social Security and FICA for a nanny is pretty small beans compared to a federal grand jury investigating whether anyone bribed anyone in order to secure get a no-bid, sole-source contract - oops - deal with the State of New Mexico.

One can only hope that the national press corps, which has been so vigorously covering the transition, peels the "Elect Obama" strips off its collective bumpers just long enough to find out who in Obama-land knew what, and - to misquote Sen. Howard Baker - when did they know it?

Bill Richardson walking away from the Commerce job is probably best for everyone. It puts one fewer foreign policy expert (in addition to Secretary of State-designate Hillary Clinton and Vice-President-elect Joe Biden) in Cabinet meetings. Obama gets credit for nominating a high-profile Hispanic. And Richardson can grow that cheesy beard again.

Got Neck Brace?
Wow! From controversial former-Clinton retread sitting as Governor of New Mexico to Presidential hopeful to James Carville's Judas to Secretary of State wannabe to Treasury Secretary nominee back down to controversial former-Clinton retread Governor of New Mexico under Federal invesigation in less than one year!

One needs a neck brace to watch Richardson's car-wreck of a political career.

It is almost as good as finding out that when John Edwards' referred to "Two Americas", he was referring to his legtimate and illegitimate children.

Adios Amigo!

Ops Normal For Democrats

And Richardson was supposed to be one of the honest dimwitcrats.

An honest dim; kind of like discussing virginity among hookers.

Huh?
"There is no reason to think that Richardson is going to be indicted in this scandal." Paragraph 14 of the article.

Funny how that sentence, the only relevant sentence in the article, gets buried in a bunch of goop. This is the problem with the Republican Party nowadays. Vacuaous articles about nothing.

This article looks like one for the trash bin -- at least until there's more information.

He spends spends the entire article implying something sinister about Richardson, but refutes all of his hogwash in a single accurate sentence quoted above.

Get some more facts, and back your article up with them. This is what is known as credibilty.

JoeRP
What? Are you on the DemonRAT payroll to cover for all the corrupt politicians by changing the subject to 'well the Republicans do it toooooo!"
I don't CARE who or what party they are in, if they are corrupt and willing to sell out MY country for power and money then I want them
in Orange jumpsuits for a long, long long time,
and every thing they own confiscated. I'm sick and tired of being robbed blind by their tax schemes and bailouts so they can profit. They trash the Constitution daily and we wage slaves and OUR posterity are on the hook for genterations. This latest "stimulus" plan is nothing but a pork barrel paradise for these corrupt thugs and funny how most of the thugs call the DemonRAT party home. Hellloooo..it's your 9% majority, you know the most ethical
in our history that's right smack in the middle and you and the dimwit voters added to the
stink by electing a Chicago Machine thug that we don't even know is an American citizen.
And for your information..I AM NOT a REpublican,
I am a Christian, Conservative voter and I don't vote for baby killers.

What are you talking about?
What in the world are you talking about.

I didn't make an argument that says "the Republicans do it too, so it’s okay if Richardson did something."

I noted that the "writer" of this article stated that there is no indication Richardson did anything, and he did so at the beginning of paragraph 14 -- which contradicts his innuendo throughout the rest of the article and makes him look ridiculous.

I also note that the "writer" compares Richardson, who admits to no wrongdoing and has not been accused of wrongdoing by anybody, to two people who admitted not paying their taxes.

Comparing one situation with a situation which is not analogous shows poor reasoning.

I am perfectly willing to be persuaded on Richardson. But give me something I can use. This just makes the Republican Party look like imbeciles.

The "cheesey beard"
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks Richardson's beard was rather tacky. I suppose he grew it to try and make himself look more "hispanic," but it just makes him look rather silly.

I doubt Richardson gave up a
secretarial portfolio just for the fun of it, unless he anticipates he is the subject to scandal, possible indictment, and/or ultimate conviction.

Look at IL's now infamous Gov. B. He hasn't resigned. And he is in the middle of a scandal, threatened with indictment, and betting feverishly against conviction. In the meantime, he's telling fellow Dems. to *stick it.*

Culture of Corruption
Ah yes! Nancy Pelosi's "culture of corruption" has reared it's ugly head once more. And guess what? Once more it is the democrats.

PVZ, coming from the former land of Dollar Bill:

No offense to Orientals, but the beard made Richardson look like some of the Chinese Masters painted on the antique Chinese scrolls hanging in my office. In fact, I am no longer able to look at my beloved artwork without thinking of Peso Bill.

Peso & The MSM
The real story here is how the MSM will treat it compared to their usual 'Scandal' stories when the other side is involved.

They only look at this scandal as how it will be an inconvenience to the Clinton / Obama Administration. Not that a crime has probably been comitted by Peso.

How many scandals will have to be 'put down' before "The One' ascends to his throne? The Clinton Machine is failing in their 'cleanup job'.

This is a great laugh--
Now we have peso bill and peso george. What a cheesy bunch. Good thing the dollar is still in use for a while. One has to wonder how Harry "the prune" reid will react. Does it ever end!!!!!

The Democrat Senate
Is there one clean, above reproach Democrat senator? Seems as if they are trying to outdo each other in the 'culture of corruption'senate.

Maybe when Burris is seated,he will look good beside the real crooks.

Reply to Tea Party.....
Heaven's to Mergatroid....great post....I love the way you think....lol......

P.S. I feel so much compassion for the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's office....there just seems to be soooooooooo much corruption that these folks must be overwhelmed and overworked......I would GLADLY give a pay raise to these folks for a job well done........

Relevant sentences
It seems JoeRP is unable to read more than one sentence into a paragraph.

"There is no reason to think that Richardson is going to be indicted in this scandal. No reason to think he's not, either."

Joe seems to have a double standard. Would he complain if George Will wrote an article where he said the same thing about a Republican? No, he wouldn't. According to folks like Joe Republicans, unlike ax murderers and Democrats, are guilty, even if proven innocent.

New Mexicans know this weasel well
New Mexico has been run by crooked Democrats like Richardson for 80 years. New Mexico is more like Old Mexico than part of the U.S. The only major newspaper left in the state, the Albuquerque Journal, is so far-left that only the party faithful read it anymore. One day it reports approvingly that Bill Richardson is holding a rally for illegal aliens in front of the governor's mansion in Santa Fe, in order to assure them that he will defend their "rights."

The next minute, when anti-illegals sentiment in the country runs higher, he declares a "border emergency" to halt the flow across, while at the same time doing all he can to make New Mexico a "sanctuary" state.

Richardson grew that grungy beard because he knew that a politically correct incoming administration would be looking for a token Mexican--excuse me, Hispanic, and it made him look more like one. In fact, if he thought it would have helped his cause, he would have put on a sombrero and sat down against a wall with his head on his knees, muttering "Si, si, senior."

He chucked his mentors the Clintons overboard, after promising to endorse them, when he saw Obama getting ahead.

Richardson is just one more political weasel out to gain all the power and wealth he can at the expense of the American taxpayer. A typical Democrat, in other words.

BAD KARMA
He's getting karmic payback for abandoning Hillary! I'm loving it too.

Daily Steve
"There is no reason to think that Richardson is going to be indicted in this scandal. No reason to think he's not, either."

Joe seems to have a double standard. Would he complain if George Will wrote an article where he said the same thing about a Republican?"

Are you serious? George Will would never write an idiotic article like this.

But the Republican Party has abandoned people like George Will, and William F. Buckley Jr. as well.

Bill Richardson
Richardson always had a shady reputation, especially when he was Clinton's lackey. Did the Clintons know Obama would select him for Commerce ? Richardson actually wanted Sec.State.

If they did not know,as payback for him going for Obama against them, they no doubt used the Clinton Machine's dossier on Richardson's actions as governor to help bring him down. Payback is he!l in the Clinton World.

Richardson on tape campaigning...
I watched this spring or summer when Richardson was being taped while on a campaign stop. He goes up to a lady and while the tape was running he started asking her about her husband and if she was still married. He must have asked her that about 3 or 4 times. Being a woman I thought why is he hitting on her? It was the creepiest thing and I couldn't believe they let the tape run like that with full sound on. To be fair, maybe it was harmless, but since watching that, I have not had a good feeling about Mr. Richardson. I told my husband he was a questionable politician. Lo and behold this pay to play scam appears. Sometimes intuition proves to be right.

New Mexicans Know Slick Bill Very Well
Jaybird, you only hit the high spots.

You forgot to mention the fact that in 6 short years he has taken us from a $1 billion dollar surplus to over $500 million in debt. But we now have a choo-choo that nobody rides and an Intergalactic Spaceport!

Forget about the increases in user fees and "unforced taxes" like vehicle registration fees, they only amounted to $780 million in 2007 alone, and mean very little to the average citizen in our state. Nothing has been said about his push to get Hollywierd coming here to make movies, with the help of the taxpayers of course. How much money have they given to Slick Willie's cause? Or, did they just give him a token Oscar instead. Complete with the cheesey beard.

We New Mexicans were hoping he would get the appointment and vamoose back to D.C. Our loss it seems, we are stuck with him for at least 2 more years.

Peso Bill
Who knows where this investigation will lead? It must be a lot worse than it looked on the surface to have Bill turn it down. He may have to resign, How delicious would that be?

This Three Ring Circus is blessed with several clowns. The suckers are watching the antics. Who would have believed this Democrat Transition team would rival Slick Willie and Hill's way back in the nineties? must be something in the water there.

Why is this news?

I don't understand why this is news.

This has been going on and is still going on in all 50 states.

Its what elected officials do. That is why they seek power. From Ted Kennedy and John Kerry with the corrupt "Big Dig" project in Boston, to the light rail and train stations in Arizona to Ted Stevens in Alaska. From sea to shinning sea.

Everyone knows this is going on. Has been for years. The U.S. Attorneys know its going on. Casino Gambling, Lotteries, Law firms, Real estate companies that manage Federal Housing programs, Defense Dept. Contracts etc etc etc.

Obviously Liberals don't care. They want to send more money to government. They want bigger government. They want to give more power to elected officials. They do this knowing all Elected Official engage in some form of corruption or un-ethical conduct.

So like any good Roman Empire, the government will continue to grow until it collaspes under the weight of its own corruption.

That is our future. Maybe 25 years out. Maybe 100 years out. But it is coming.

Espionage on Richardson's Watch
As I recall, it was Bill Richardson as Secretary of Energy who oversaw, or was supposed to be overseeing, the security at the National Labs. Remember Wen Ho Lee, or the missing hard drives, etc.

Never was impressed with the guy!

J. Edgar Hoover redux
Anyone think Richardson looks a little like good ol' J. Edgar Hoover?

Hope and Change!
BWAHAHAHAHA

Peso Bill
He has always been a smarmy man who was in above his head. He sucked up to the Clintons and got selected for an office he had no business being in. Looks like he has been feathering his nest ever since.
