Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Good morning, class.

Good morning Mr. Mullings.

I said … Good Morning, Class.

GOOD MORNING MR. MULLINGS!

That's better.

Today we're going to discuss a pretend, made-up, invented, fabricated case which you, as senior-level Public Relations majors will have to fix. Are you up for this?

YES, MR. MULLINGS!

Here's the case. A major industrial segment - which has only three domestic players - is in financial distress because of decades of bad decisions. They want the Congress to bail them out to the tune of $25 billion. The Congress has bailed out other bad actors - AIG to make a point - with hundreds of billions of dollars so this particular industry segment feels fairly confident they will get the dough.

Questions. Yes, Furbush?

Mr. Mullings, would this case pertain to the auto industry?

Furbush, you clever devil. It is, indeed, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler.

To continue, the CEOs of what are now laughingly called "the big three" fly into Washington to make their case to the appropriate Congressional Committees. How do you think they got from Detroit to Washington? Anyone? Anyone?

Mr. Mullings, you know how we hate when you do that Ferris Bueller business.

Point taken. If you were the head of any of the major domestic automobile manufacturing companies' public relations department what would you have recommended?

Take a commercial flight?

Good! First class or coach. Remember Ford has closed 17 plants and laid off more than 51,000 employees over the past three year.

COACH! COACH!

Yes, well. They didn't do that. Anyone else? Yes, Mr. Dimwitty?

They flew first class?

Not a bad guess but no. Someone else want to give this a shot? Miss Gotrocks?

They shared a private plane?

That, I think, might have been defensible. But, sadly, that is not what they did. Ok. I'll tell you what they did. Each Chief Executive Officer of the each of the three major American car companies took his own private jet from Detroit to Dulles Airport to attend the Congressional hearings during which they were going to beg for $25 billion.

Seriously, Mr. Mullings. How did they really get to Washington? Train?

No. They really, actually each flew in their own private multi-million dollar jet plane. The Ford guy doesn't even live in Michigan, much less Detroit. According to ABC's Brian Ross,

Alan Mulally actually lives in Seattle, not Detroit. The company jet takes him home and back on weekends.

You would think that the board of directors over at Ford might have thought it might have made some sense for the company's CEO to live within commuting distance to the office.

According to my mapping program, the distance from Seattle to Detroit is a little over 2,300 miles and the trip, by car, takes about 40 hours.

As 40 hours happens to be the length of the average work week, Mr. Mulally would do nothing but drive from his house to his office and back every two weeks for the $21 million he made in 2007 were it not for his private jet.

Dear Mr. Mullings, what happened to that Socratic question-and-answer thing you were doing earlier?

Don't bother me now. I'm on a roll.

According to published reports, the average United Auto Worker union member makes about $73 per hour. How much does Mr. Mullaly make per hour? Let's do the math.

Forty hours a week times 52 weeks (ignoring vacation and holidays) = 2080 hours. If we divide 21 million by 2080 we come up with a bit over $10,000 per hour.

Ten. Thousand. Dollars. Per. Hour.

And there's nothing to indicate he can hit major league pitching.

You might think the CEOs of the three majors would be willing to take a little haircut on their salaries after getting out of their private jets and into their private limos on their way to plead for you and me to provide then $25 billion to make up for their dreadful decisions.

Nah.

According to Bloomberg.com:

"Representative Peter Roskam, an Illinois Republican, challenged [GM CEO Rick] Wagoner and Mulally to forgo pay for a year, saying he understood Nardelli was agreeable to the idea."

Wagoner said he had "no position on that." And Mulally said "I think I'm OK where I am."

Well, hell. If I were making 10 grand AN HOUR I'd be "OK where I am," too.

You think Wagoner hasn't thought about taking a smallish pay cut to show how serious he is about helping his company through this rough patch? Of course he did and apparently decided against it.

He lied to the committee. He had a position and his position was: I'm not giving up a dime.

Ok. For next time, come up with a public relations plan to bail these idiots out of the swamp they've put themselves in.

Class dismissed.

DRIVE
In a couple of weeks, when these three CEOs return to Washington, I will bet my last dollar all three will drive their cleanest, most economical car from Detroit to the capitol.

Tom, no matter what
they do, they can't win the PR battle. To whit: if they drive an SUV (due to staff and driver accommodations), they will be pilloried for their carbon footprint. If they drive an econo-box, they will be accused of pandering to the greenies.

Personally, I favor a Chap 11 restructuring and force the UAW to renegotiate. Compare GM, Ford and Chrysler to Honda and Toyota compensation for starters. Then maybe they'll have a chance to be relevant again.

good column
Usually contrived formats in these columns suffer from being awkward, this column was actually amusingly written.

It should be noted that that $73 figure for workers is actually high. Apparently what is being quoted is labor costs divided by the number of current workers. But some of those labor costs are for retired workers. So that $73/ hour figure actually assigns to current workers the cost of previous workers and do not actually benefit the current workers at all.

Even the average auto worker lives high

$73/hour means they make $152,000/year. Even if that's high, let's say the average auto worker makes $100,000/year. Incredibly high for someone without a college education.

The severance package for these folks is phenomenal. One fella is even having much of his Harvard education paid for through his severance package. There were mainstream news segments last year on the incredibly generous payouts.

Although I feel bad for folks who are now losing their homes due to the unemployment, in earlier years they should have realized that they were really getting a great deal from the auto makers. And saved accordingly. Many college graduates do not make $100,000/year.

the UAW SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO PARTNER
ALLOW THE UAW TO PARTNER WITH THE BIG THREE AUTO MAKERS. THEY WOULD ALL BE WORKING FOR THE SAME CAUSE SAVING THE AUTO INDUSTRY. IF FOR SOME REASON IT DOES NOT WORK THEN ALL UNION CONTRACTS WOULD BE VOID PRIOR TO THE UNITED STATES BECOMING A MAJORITY INTEREST PARNER IN THE AUTO INDUSTRY FOR A LIMITED TIME PERIOD.

dsslm
The sources I can find suggest that the actual figure is around $60,000 not bad for a job with good benefits and that appears to be before overtime. Not $100,000 but still pretty good. Part of what made America excel was the existence of good paying jobs that did not require more than a high school education. But that may be a thing of the past.

The Three Blind Mice
Let the bankruptcies work their magic.

Government regulation, unions and inept management have teamed up to turn the "Big Three" into a bunch of beggers.

The only reason union members command high wages is because they belong to a union. Ability, capability, knowledge or craftsmanship are not important. Membership is all that counts.

Unions have successfully whipsawed spineless management to accept excessive wages and benefits. The high rollers should be sent down the road will a can tied to their tails.

The government ought to stay out of the car making business. Car buyers in the land of the free and home of the brave out to be able to buy what they want.

The workers have eaten their dessert first. Now they will have to get along on potatoes and pray there is no crop failure.

Make book
Tom, if it was legal, I'd take your bet. These guys are so arrogant they’ll fly those big jets until the bankruptcy court takes them away to sell on EBay. The UAW pres never said how he arrived. Does the union own a big jet also? I wouldn’t be surprised.

Unions brought the working man
and woman into the middle class in the 40s and 50s and then became obsolete and starting killing off their benefactors:

unions killed 12 NYC daily newspapers in strikes over technology;

unions killed steel and drove it overseas;

unions killed pub. ed. and turned it into an "engine for social change" a la Bill Ayers, as an NEA pres. really said in 1972;

unions are now about to kill US auto manufacture, which the gov't has also worked assiduously to kill w/1) CAFE standards, 2) union favoritism, 3) OSHA factory monitory, 4) catering to IL, MI, and OH representatives, 5) taking gobs of said states' pol. donations to skew legislation, and 5)35% corp. tax, the highest even in the European socialist world.

I belong to the NEA, which insists it is an assoc. and not a union, but employs its own form of thuggery in enforced conformity and intolerance.

Union Heads Were In D.C. Too.
Hey Rich, Great column, the Union Heads were there too and the mainstream media didn't even bring up how they got there, coincidence I think not.
Can't you just hear Marlon Brandon in the final scene of Apocalypse Now, "The Horror, The Horror" that's what the Unions have come to symbolise in American Industry.
Go ahead pick any American Industry that has Union representation and sit back and watch the carnage.
Obama is going to approve the bailout, they scratched his back now he has to return the favor, so the rank and file can continue to live beyond their means.
Once the Auto Bailout is a done deal, the UAW will be going after Indian Casino workers, who represent substantial new income in Union dues.
THE UNION MAFIA IS STRONG AND WILL NEVER DIE HERE IN AMERICA.
This is the new 21st century Union motto.

RIGHT ON GALEN !
THEY NEED TO HAVE A SUPER SALE,PUT ALL THE CARS ON OVER STOCK DOT COM CUT THE CAR PRICES IN HALF HAVE SOME KIND OF PLAN!NO THEY JUST YELL SHOW US THE MONEY!

Despite years of mismanagement
and questionable business practices, the auto industry is begging for a bailout. Unfortunately, Obama and his leftist illuminati cabinet will probably jump right into the fray and give it to them to return the back-scratching favors.

NO MORE BAIL OUT
THE UAW HELP CREATE THE BURDEN OF THE AUTO INDUSTRY LET IT FORM A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE BIG THREE. THEY CAN SAVE DETRIOT AND THEMSELVES AT THE SAME TIME. BUT NO BAILOUT OF THE AUTO INDUSTRY OR THE AIRLINES , BANKS OR NO OTHER PRIVATE ENTERPRISE WE HAVE PLENTY OF BANKRUPCY COURTS WAITING ON BUSINESS.

Please sign 2 petitions-Obama citizenshi

I know this is off topic but....

World Net Daily created a petition last night to force Barack Obama to provide an original birth certificate that he was actually born in Hawaii. His African grandmother says she was present at his birth in Kenya. If that’s true, it is illegal for him to have run for the presidency. We as U.S. citizens are required to provide our original birth certificate to get a Social Security card, a driver’s license or a passport. So he should have been required to produce the same to have run for the presidency.

Janet Folger Porter of Faith2Action has written 2 short outstanding columns about this matter, arguing America must follow the Constitution. This must be done before the Electoral College votes on December 15 to confirm Obama’s presidency.

Also, Justice Thomas of the U.S. Supreme Court has scheduled the matter of Constitutional review of Obama's birth certificate for discussion in the Supreme Court on December 5.

OR
you can call Congressmembers locally

Here's a second petition website that creates instant e-mails to all your U.S. Senators and your U.S. Representative. This will take only 2 minutes of your time. You sign the petition first. Then you can instantly create the e-mails by clicking that button as well.

Nardelli is no surprise
He probably still has a few bucks leftover from the $100 million HomeDepot paid him to go away. Maybe the other two haven't had a chance to be failed CEO's before.

Any bailout will just prolong the inevitable. The combination of being in MI and the UAW added to the tone deaf CEO's is a formula for failure.

I say let Obama and his democrat majorities handle this one next year. There are two many republican fingerprints on this bailout madness already.

Casual Arrogance
It appears the casual arrogance of the CEOs using private jets to go to DC will have more effect on the prospects of a bailout than 60 years of stupidity, greed and irresponsibility. And Sgt Relic, you give good advice to the GOP. Get their hands off all DC action NOW, except for loud and continuous cries that THIS WON'T WORK. The Dems did an excellent job of putting the mess of the last 12 years in the GOP lap. The GOP now has an even better opportunity to do the same to the Dems. The next step would be for the GOP to actually do what they promised in 94. Maybe we'll see it and maybe not. It is the change we all actually hope for, even those who voted for Obama. Obama is the epitome of the policies which made a failure of Carter and which, when not reversed by the Bushies when they had a chance, doomed their adminsitrations and put us here.

PR Plan Outline
PR Plan Outline to restore some confidence in U.S. auto manufacturers-Chrysler, Ford, GM: Call emergency stockholders meeting. Fire CEOs. Declare bankruptcy. Restructure with employee ownership (responsible for quality, fuel efficiency, economy of operations and competitive sales). Get rid of executive perks, esp. the private jets. Stop Ford support of homosexual and lesbian agenda. Evaluate results quarterly, adjust as necessary.

History Repeats Itself
British Leyland, makers of Morris, Austin (both made Minis/Cooper as well as a large standard range)Triumph, MG, Jaguar were on the same tactic - Government handouts. Where is British Leyland now, and all of their arrogant management and greedy unions - GONE.
Stop throwing good money after bad, let them reorganize under bankrupcy, slim down and make products we want at a price they can make a living off.

It's the UAW Bailout!
This idea of the "Big Three" auto makers bailout is pure horsefeathers!
The reality is the Dems owe big time to the UAW and now they are scrambling to "save" the union, at least for a while...

There is only one issue.
Galen misses it completely. Bailouts are not authorized by the U.S. Constitution. None of this is even open for discussion. Galen's mocking of the CEO's shows his own moral turpitude.

a silly and petty cheap shot, ignorant?
How naive.
Wah! Wah! The executive flew on a fancy jet.
Let's skip the scary immediate details and try to avoid petty the popular shreik-out for a moment.
Consider that you are looking to hire a CEO to run a multi-billion dollar operation. Also consider the number of people affected by having the right person in place. Now what are your most important criteria? Cheap? Local? geez. (what was that saying about penny-wise & pound-foolish?)
With all that is at stake, millions of dollars of flexibility are more important. If you chose who you think is best and they want an extra million for commuting, who cares? It is probably the equivalent of a 3% increase in cost to hire. And, the next applicant may have wanted a higher salary anyway. If anything, the idea that they would want to live in Detroit may be a reason to question their qualifications.
Feel free to fault the choice they made but to whine about the jet thing is petty and in the vein of pop-ignorance.
Now that you have hired these people, how many hours do you want them standing at an airport? You already have the jet. Want to leave it sit? Want to sell it? TODAY! Quick SeLL IT!SELL IT ON EBAY! SHREIK! and while you're at it make sure that that big bad greedy CEO doesn't make personal calls with his company paid cell phone.
We all benefit from more thoughtful discussions of issues. petty, populist righteous shreiks are bad.

This points out the whole problem
Whether they flew, were carried to by slaves or crawled on their knees the whole way, the issue is not how they got there but whether and how they can solve their problems.

The Democrats were mad because of the PR aspects prevented them from rolling the congress over on this. Similar to when they sent an envoy to Daniel Ortega to ask the Sandanistas not to embarass the Dems in their support for them.

There has been on FOX and conservative sites that has recognized that the car makers need structural fix not cash. For the public view it is mostly about class envy and PR.

Uh, Patrick?
Unless something changed in the last 20+ years, doesn't the UAW have members on the board of at least one of the Big Three automakers (I think it was GM)??

may I be excused
I can not imagine a more unnecessary and wasteful use of time than what I have just read. Cuteness by half if that. This style? of rhetoric is exactly what is considered taking ones self too seriously. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Tom in Mo.
Well, your mostly right, they will take their jet to Philadelphia Then be limo'd to DC. (can't expect them to get their hands dirty on the wheel).

Dems and Unions in collusion
The Dems don't even have to do anything good for the unions, the unions will promise their votes next time anyway. Just like the blacks, the hispanics, etc. The Dems have done great damage to them all with their welfare state, but they can't understand it.

Great to point it out Mr. Galen..,
But what do we do about it?

HANG 'EM HIGH
Everyone who buys an American car finances those superobgobflopsious salaries and perks. That means that little ol' you and I can bring a screeching halt to all of it. Just stop buying their poorly made, overpriced cars and they will have to get real or go under. Frankly, I would prefer the latter. They have robbed us blind forever and laughed all the way to the bank at the plight of their stupid victims. (I have heard them refer to their customers as victims.) The auto executives, present and former, should be sent to a bad prison while all their money is returned to their customers. Then, stake 'em out Indian style for a buzzard feast.

Bailout Or Chapter 13
Let them file for chapter 13 just like many other companies will be doing. Force the UAW to
renegotiate . They have already lost the PR battle. But I like my Ford truck , but it's 18 years old , and I probably will not buy another one , of any kind , to much electronics to keep up . All I have to do is figure a way to put heat on my bike.

700 billion, strike that
2 trillion to the bankers and people are quibbling about a meesely 25 billion for the big 3?

Why's that?

Just listening to the politicians
In DC today, doesn't it make ya just feel stupid?
I feel so stupid today as a citizen, can't help it watching how we get manipulated and talked down to like idiots.

After awhile, one gets the message the Government is intent to send out, Americans are just stupid today

Good Morning Mr. Mullins...
Isn't your assertion that the "Big Three" auto execs flying on their private aircraft to D.C. made them greedy & arrogant similar to Nancy Pelosi's demand for a C-32 jet (seats 45 at a cost of $22,000 per hour to operate) to ferry her & family & friends back and forth to D.C.? Oh, it's not? Why not? Oh, I see. She is a powerful Democrat and beholding to labor unions and invironmentalists. Thank you, Sir, for explaining the facts to me.

America is suffering
America is suffering unlawful deception from the Alinsky group.
Group u$urp$ power on January 20th—the constitution violated.
The United States Supreme Court alone can relieve this outrage.
