Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Yesterday, the National Broadcasting Company buried the memory of Tim Russert by turning Meet the Press into a campaign event for Barack Obama.

People connected with the Sunday talk shows - producers, bookers, hosts, etc. - understand that they get measured, not on whether they shed light on the shadows within the folds of complex issues, but whether they make news.

That is, does something said on Sunday show up on the front pages of the New York Times and the Washington Post on Monday.

To do that, the Sunday shows spend a great deal of time and effort getting the guest or guests most likely to make news. It even has a name: "The Get." As in, "Meet the Press" had The Get when they booked Colin Powell to be on yesterday's program.

As soon as word leaked out that Powell was going to be on "Meet" it was assumed that he would be endorsing Obama. Why else would he be on? To discuss bilateral relations between the U.S. and Chad?

Dear Mr. Mullings:

Am I mistaken, or did Chris Wallace have John McCain as his guest on Fox News Sunday? Isn't that a campaign event on behalf of McCain by Fox?

There is a difference between having an actual candidate on to defend his or her record and positions and having Colin Powell spending the first half of the show endorsing Obama - without a countervailing supporter of John McCain on at the same time.

I'm still not so sure.

I am. If NBC wanted to demonstrate "fairness" (keep that word in mind as we head into the era of an all-Democrat Washington) they would have had Joe Lieberman on with Powell - a Democrat who is voting for McCain.

Powell claimed that race had nothing to do with his announcement; saying if that were the basis of his decision to endorse Obama he could have done it months ago. He said he was disturbed by the continued Conservative bent of the Republican Party.

Yeah, right. Do you think that NBC would have booked Warren Christopher to announce he was voting for McCain if Christopher thought the Democrats were veering too far to the left?

If the Republican Party were lurching to the right, Mike Huckabee would be the nominee, not "centrist" John McCain.

And, by the way, when he was climbing his way up through the Washington, DC power vines:

Powell was appointed National Security Advisor by Ronald Reagan. Pretty conservative, by most accounts.

He was nominated to be Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by George H.W. Bush. Moderate, in most people's thinking.

He was nominated to be Secretary of State by President George W. Bush. Certainly to 41's right.

And how did the Democratic Party treat Colin Powell when, say, Bill Clinton was President? PBS quotes Dick Morris on the relationship between Clinton and Powell prior to the 1996 re-election campaign as follows:

"Clinton was apoplectic on the subject of Colin Powell, terrified of Colin Powell. For three months, all he could think about was Colin Powell. And he would talk about the press giving Powell a free ride, that the press is promoting Powell's candidacy."

Was the party ideology claim challenged by Tom Brokaw? No. Of course not, because NBC and a significant proportion of the main stream media believes it to be true.

NBC will "win" this week's Sunday Talk Show Sweepstakes. In fact on both ABC's "This Week" and Fox's "Fox News Sunday" George Stephanopoulos and Chris Wallace brought up Powell's endorsement on their shows. It will certainly be on the front page of the Times, the Post and every other newspaper this morning.

When Tim Russert hosted the show, he was tough on every guest - Republican or Democrat. The new "Meet the Press" is an FEC investigation waiting to happen.

Sorry you are WRONG!
Tim was never FAIR! He was VERY mildly tough on Democrats. Colin Powell BETRAYED his boss.(GWB) A principled MAN would have resigned, if he really disagreed on the war. Instead he stayed Sec. of State, undermining every thing GWB tried to do. If you do not agree with your President, you resign, and fight openly, honorably, instead of stabbing him in the back from a position of trust.

As I thought...
...Powell is political and a phoney. That he could describe Obama as being qualified is like calling Pamela Anderson flat chested. Speaking of boobs, I wonder if Biden realizes that no one has ever really wanted HIM as President. Speaking of qualified, Governor Palin is a rock star now, and just as qualified to carry the warm bucket of spit as any other VEEP.

LInda
Totally agree with you about Russert and Colin Powell. I don't understand the fence riding Americans can't see the empty suit, snake oil salesman with anti-American, commie, white-hating associates. Its like McCain's first ad. He really is just the latest Paris/Brittany in-vote.

Geez ...
A new hero suddenly emerges for the left! We are sure too see a whole lot more of Colin Powell during the next 2 weeks.

Meet the Press
Why isn't Joe Lieberman on the show? I definitely think the FEC should check into that.

A campaign event Galen won't tell you ab
out:

Yesterday, 30 cars had their tires slashed in the parking lotwhile Obama was speaking in Ohio. among these car owners were single mothers with small children, elderly, etc.

This is what conservatives have devolved into, and irrational, torch and pitchfork mindset that has no place in decent American society.

hilarous
Until Colin Powell endorsed Obama, he was every right wing republicans favorite african american. Now that he has endorsed Obama, you folks savagely attack him. This just shows the conservative movement is utterly bankrupt. Instead of addressing Gen. Powell's thoughtful critique of McCain and the party, you call him names. The modern conservative movement is a complete joke.

indyconantidim
The real question is why wasn't Joe Lieberman on the Repub ticket.

Why was Joe Lieberman unceremoniously dumped in favor of Sarah Palin, possibly the biggest mistake of the McCain campaign.

Edward
See, you're doing the typical liberal spin. Create a lie make it sound like fact (or that you're in the 'know'). Then you take your false point of view and spin it against those you lie about and make it sound like they are the ones that are lying/hypocritical.
(Example(s): Gen. Powell is a conservative "favorite". Or some liberal reporter hears "kill him" at a McCain where NO ONE can substantiate; not even the Secret Service)

I run in some pretty conservative circles. I have not heard - over the last 20 years - overwhelming praise for Colin Powell. Rather, he's basically a non-issue.

I remember - one election cycle (1996? 2000?) where he was urged to run. The big question was: would he run as a Rep or Demo? Gee, if that question had to be asked it's obvious his policies/principles aren't that clearly defined.

But, hey, keep spin'n in circles if your dizziness makes you feel better.

Oh, and back to the reasons for his Obama support: essentailly McCain's too far to the 'right'!? Exposes how left he really is.

Park
I also saw the article about conservatives slashing the tires of 30 cars while their owners (mostly working people, like Joe the Plumber) were asking questions at an Obama rally.

What amazes me is how holier-than-thou they can become when it serves their purpose, and how blind they are when it happens on their side.

General Powell
In as much as I am disappointed in General Powell's decision to endorse The One, I don't hold it against him. He obviously needs a job within the next Administration and his eleventh hour endorsement reveals that he has managed to convert from soldier to politician aptly enough to wait and see who became mostly likely to win the election and then jump onto the band wagon. However, it is a tough pill to swallow to believe that his race was not a criterion for making his decision. The saddest part to see was his 'thoughtful critique'. Obligatory groveling at the feet of the 'Mainstream' Media King Makers is more like it.

P.S. to Ralph:
Joe Lieberman wasn't selected because McCain's conservative base deluged his campaign with protest statements indicating that they would abandon him in droves if he had. Do you actually think that you are smarter and more politically savvy than John McCain? McCain obviously believes that his selection for his running-mate was an excellent choice, he even said that he couldn't be happier about it. If you actually need someone to explain to you why Lieberman wasn't on the Republican ticket, then you ain't too bright.

Huckabee conservative?
Huckabee is a nice, bright man. However, politically he is basically a religious Democrat.

Conservative Vandals
How did the article in question determine these people slashing the tires were 'conseratives'? Did they all wear buttons saying 'I'm a Conservative'? I assume since damage was done at an Obama rally, the reporters just knew it HAD to be people of a conservative bent. Sounds more like KKK tactics to me. I personally don't know any true conservative that would stoop to acts of vandalism to get a political point across any more than I suspect a normal liberal (hmm..oxymoron?)would. Fringe dwellers do not represent the party center in either case. And by the way, since these reporters apparently had very close contact with the vandals, I'm sure they gave the police names and pictures.......

Where's Palin
Hey Rich the the American people have been waiting for Gov. Palin to go on any of the Sunday talk shows for months.
I'm sure they can get her a spot on Meet the Press this Sunday.
Tell the McCain canp to give them a call.

slashed tires
I heard about the slashed tires and three thoughts came to mind.

1- Most likely scenario: The tires were slashed by left wing libs who are so stupid they went to the wrong event. After all, it was the leftists who kept slashing the tires of GOP vehicles in the 2004 election. It's kind of their thing.

2- Slightly less likely but still plausible: Tires were slashed by left wing libs knowing that the action would be billed as an attack by conservatives, the GOP, Dick Cheney, and Ronald Reagan. This is possible, but requires a little more planning than most libs are capable of. (See Jimmy Carter and Joe Biden)

3- Possible but also unlikely: Tires were slashed by one or two malcontents who dislike Obama and his Kool-Aid drinkers. If this is the case, they have no business in the GOP. We don't play that way and it's probably a trademark infringement as the Dems have already claimed those kind of tactics for themselves.

Dept of State
The State Department has a long history of being dominated by socialists and closet communists, not to mention disastrously incompetent.
No matter who is President, as long as they think they must rely on our state dapertament they will allways be directly blamed for the horrendous mistakes bu this bureaucracy.
Condi Rice is a good example. When she started at state she was indeed a conservative. After a short year or so, it was evident that her staff had cut down her wings.

Listen Hoss, GOP a Shambles.
The GOP would not be in the position it is in if there was an ounce if integrity running the party. The GOP Neo-Cons took over the party with your blessing. Don't blame the mainstream media for Bush having the worst administration that I have seen in my 50 years. Don't go looking for blame elsewhere. The Leader takes the blame and doesn't pass the buck. A number of Goobers on this site forget that the leader of our the country is the president and if he is a man, he accepts the blame. Bush had his accomplices make billions off the Iraq war. Tens of billions have been lost to corruption. The Fox News Network are accomplices since they did not keep the neocons in check. They meekly apologized for their many transgressions. Now that Fox news and their ilk see the writing on the wall, they now are blustering with non stories to make up the hole they built for McCain when he ran for office. Don't worry, dumbly keep Fox news in business and keep O'Reilly and Hannity's pockets full of blood money. They sold their soul to Rupert Murdoch, a foreigner.

One doesn't need the mainstream media to highlight the grand follies of this Bush regime. Katrina, not capturing Bin Lauden, not regulating Wall Street, and not properly caring for all the needs of our soldiers and their families. That is a sin.

An honest government with integrity doesn't hide their iniquities by classifying secret. The imagine with Obama becoming president, more emails will be erased and documents shredded.

Meet The Press.
You show me a news show anywhere in the MSM and I will show you a Campaign Event for Obama. It has been that way for months.

The man should be twenty points ahead. He has his own admiration team 24/7. It never ends.

WTH does AL from IL's Post
Have to do with Meet the Press?
Have all these Bush Deranged Trolls lost their minds and can now only spout the daily talking points they are feed at KOS and DU?

As long as ACORN doesn't steal it, McCain and Palin should sail into the White House. Any sane American will vote for experience over a Marxist freshman Senator and his loony running mate.

Mr. Galen says:
"The new "Meet the Press" is an FEC investigation waiting to happen."

That's a laugh.

yes
I miss Tim Russert, it is sad what his show has become.

The state department worked for defeat
in Iraq for three years.

Bremer disbanded the police, fire, and service people and let crooks and insurrectionists riot in the streets, the militias develop into political forces, and ran the *war* just like the losing Vietnam scenario of never occupying land and driving out the violence.

It was McCain's surge that has changed Iraq from a losing proposition to the more stable, less volatile, and developing democracy it is now.

Colin Powell liked being the first black man as secretary of state, but he never was a strong pro-American, vigorous foreign-policy believer.
He's better off moving over to the left.

If he thinks McCain is too far right, he hasn't met anyone on TH. If he thinks Alito and Roberts are too conservative, he's been in DC way too long.

I think it's the race thing. He thinks he'll be part of the first all-black cabinet, the way Splke Lee thinks DC will turn into *chocolate town.* I have news for Spike. DC is chocolate town, but it's not the positive he pompously predicts as DC in its present form is the murder captial of the US with the worst school system and is losing population faster than CA.

Vote McCain/Palin for real new direction in DC.

wow...seriously?
so having a former General and member of a Republican cabinet is an "obama" rally? are you saying Powell is no longer a Republican? are you saying he doesn't have free choice in this election? people say what they want. get over it...this is America...

Egon says:
"The State Department has a long history of being dominated by socialists and closet communists, not to mention disastrously incompetent."

Oh really? Care to offer evidence for this claim? I used to work for the State Department and I have never met so many educated, smart, hard-working people in one place since. I should never have left. Well educated, well traveled, open-minded, often politically liberal (although most employees there are civil servants and not political appointees). A former Secretary of State, Colin Powell, just upped the ante by endorsing Obama. McCain countered that four former Secretaries of State support him. Given the "socialism" of Mr. Obama that we've all been learning about, I hardly think McCain would brag about having former Secs. of State support him.

Wild Dogs
REpublicans kinda remind me of a pack of wild dogs. They are all rabid and foaming at the mouth, but mostly working together. Then, if one of them gets the scent of prey on him, they turn on him and tear him to pieces.

Your reaciton to Powell is just liek that. "Powell, he's a great guy....er a traitor, no he's a traitor!"

Fairness Doctrine
The messiah knows what is fair and not fair. As POTUS, he'll bring back the fairness doctrine and all those liberal TV news shows(?)will have to have an equal conservative view.
Yeah, right...Just conservative talk radio will be forced out of business with lib talkers that no one will pay to hear.

McCain can win with the economy.

The Economy is what most people are concerned about. McCain can win on the economy if we promote a grass roots effort that will get the country angry at the real culprits. If Republicans send out emails like I did to everyone on my email address list, then McCain could win! Elected public officials will only accept emails from their constituents.

Therefore I have access to only a few Republican politicians. If enough people who receive this email will email their friends, Republican representatives at every level from local to the president and every conservative talk show host then America will get the message.

This was the message;

Powell helped me make up my mind
Thanks to Colin Powell I know now that a vote for McCain is the best thing to do.

Historically Powell has always been on the wrong side of events going back to Viet Nam.

He may be a great guy. A good soldier and american. But his decisions over his career have always been wrong.

The only reason we are still in Iraq is because of the "Powell influence" Remember "you break it, you fix it." I would have been perfectly happy going in and removing Saddam and then leaving. Colin Powell is the one that somehow convinced the world that it is our responsibility to rebuild Iraq.

In my view, our only responsibility as good citizens of the world was to remove the man who comited crimes against Humanity and that was Saddam Hussein. What the Iraq people do after we liberate them is their choice.

Jeffrey, you are already a leftist
ergo, if you worked for the State Dep't, you are the poster child everyone talks about.

As to ancient history, the FBI named over 200 communist and communitst supports in the late 1940s. Sen. Joe McCarthy picked up their dropped ball and investigated the FBI reports. He claimed there were 246 communists still working their magic at State in the 1950s.

When the USSR fell, the Venona files from the KGB validated over 240 communists in the State Dep't in McCarthy's time, that Alger Hiss and the Rosenbergs were spies, and that the usual suspects who cried foul and labeled McCarthy an attacker of Hollywood (McCarthy never investigated Hollywood--that was the HUAC, House unAmerican Activities Committee)were like the trolls on TH.

Culture at State hasn't changed in 60 years--it prides itself on Hah-vahd-Yalie types who see no evil.

It was the State Dept after 9/11 that continued handing out *emergency* student visas to Muslims who couldn't even sign their names, despite direct pres. orders to cease and desist. After many months, the woman head of the fiasco was given a gold watch and medal of honor (joking, it was Bremer that got the medal of honor) before the instant visas were terminated.

Jeffrey, if you work, you shouldn't be on this thread 24 hours a day. I think your poor employer isn't getting his money's worth. Typical of gov't workers.

A VOTE FOR MCCAIN IS RIGHT USA! USA!!!!
THE NEWS MEDIA WILL NEVER GET MY VOTE!ITS A SAD DAY,WHEN THE PRESS AND GEORGE STEPHONYOSOPOLOSI,TRYS TO TELL US HOW TO VOTE GEORGE IS A CLINTON REJECT!ABC LIKES GEORGE THEY ARE ALL IN THE TANK FOR B.HUSSEIN!

COLON POWELL IS UN-STABLE!
MY MY MY COLON SAID EVEN IF OBAMA IS A MUSLIM WHATS WRONG WITH THAT!!!???? FOLKS WE ARE LIVING IN THE END OF TIMES.

park, mn
so some tires were slashed at a liberal gathering. must have been conservatives. probably a conservative youth gang. possibly a conservative acorn group that was tired of registering fictitious voters. or maybe it was santa claus, or the tooth fairy. when a crime occurs, one of the first questions to be answered is, "who benefitted from the crime?" the answer is that park wants the democrats to benefit. hmmmmmmmm. i wonder who slashed the tires, if tires were actually slashed. yeah, park, it must have been those conservatives.

Colin Powell
Just proved himself to be a racist. His loyalty changes with the color.

Hussein is 1/4 black & colin is 1/4 black, so both only equal 1/2 black.

I am disapointed in Colin, i thought he was an honest man.

Goodbye Colin
I am glad Colin has come out of the closet. I never liked what the man had to say. He was trying to harm the conservative movement. Now he has no followers here. It is so good to see him finally being honest and to see people become undeceived.

Al 2:04
You are into it so deep you are swimming. I've never heard so much of it in so few words. How does anyone get everything they write wrong. It's got to be a super talent.

I agree with Joycey...give us a paddle!
Meet the Press is not Fox News, thank God!

I guess its a wrap.
Colin Powell has cinched the black vote for Obama, just when McCain had them in the bag. Bummer.

Was the sudden...
...appearance of Powell to endorse Obama a stopgap measure to counter Joe the Plumber? I suspect Powell was waiting in the wings late into the campaign to make this announcement to bolster Obama at the end or to help offset any bleeding that may have occurred. Joe The Plumber cut deep into the Obama agenda and Powell decided to apply a tourniquet.

Ralph
RE: "The real question is why wasn't Joe Lieberman on the Repub ticket."

Actually, the "real question" is why wasn't Condi Rice on the Repub ticket. It would have been a slam-dunk winner.

Why? Several reasons. First, she wouldn't be going around saying 'you betcha this' and 'gosh darn that.' Second, nobody would be able to say she isn't qualified to step in as president. Third, she would garner at least 30% of African American votes vs the 1% McCain will get.

"COLON" POWELL SHOWS HIS TRUE COLOR
.....POWELL FINDS HIS COMFORT ZONE ...

.....RICH ...

.....I always wondered why Powell was a Republican ...actually he wasn't, he was and is a RINO ...

.....His loyalties were always with social issues like Abortion on demand, Affirmative Action and Government mandated school intergration ...he must have received much hate mail from his black bretheren for being in the Bush administration ...

.....Now he can kick back and be himself ...he's a brother again .....COLOSSUS

"It all comes down to the fact that there's nothing from the other side," Berg said. "The admissions are there. By not filing the answers or objections, the defense has admitted everything. He admits he was born in Kenya. He admits he was adopted in Indonesia. He admits that the documentation posted online is a phony. Wow, reading through this thread is like readying through a Psychology text of neuroses.

What's next Buffett isn't really rich? Afterall how could a rish man support Obama?

Oh PLEASE!
Obama is using hypnosis!!

The left, not just Obama, are using propaganda, control of news and entertainment as well as the schools to seize control of this country...

It's been going on for years, decades really, and is right out of the marxist textbook used so many times, else where in the world.

Fair == Democrat by definition
People are so used to high ranking Democrats moving to the press they think it is a law of nature. George Stephanopoulos held EXACTLY the same positions for the Clinton regime that Karl Rove held for George W. Bush. When he was chosen to take over for David Brinkley no one thought it was odd at all. Imagine Karl Rove being made a news anchor. Every newspaper and major media outlet would be screaming about it until his name was withdrawn. PLEASE don't tell me that having him as commentator along with various Democrats is the same thing. What did Russert do before he was allowed to replace A PANEL OF THREE REPORTERS? " Russert worked as a special counsel, and later as chief of staff, to Democratic U.S. Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan. In 1983 he became the counsel to Democratic Governor Mario Cuomo of New York State." Yes they used to have 3 reporters from different papers, but those were ALL replaced by NOT A REPORTER, but a Democrat staff member. Obviously NBC saw those two things as essentially the same. Press or Democratic Hack. What's the diff? Does NOBODY see how BIZARRE this is?
