Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

NOTE: This is a reprise of the column written for September 11, 2002 - one year after. America had re-booted itself and the country was moving forward. Rich

----- Let the river run;
Let all the dreamers wake the nation. Come. The New Jerusalem.
- Carly Simon "Let the River Run"

Another cup of coffee in yet another airport. A well-known political reporter, also waiting for another plane, sits.

In the manner of desultory discussions in airport coffee shops, truth happened: "This," the reporter said waving an arm, "The United States of America, now, in our lifetime, is the Promised Land."

Perhaps that was the true motive for the attacks of a year ago: A realization by our enemies that this IS the New Jerusalem.

Various translations of Genesis 12:1-3 conform, generally, to the Standard Revised King James:

1: Now the Lord said to Abraham, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.

2: And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.

3: I will bless those who bless you, and him who curses you I will curse; and by you all the families of the earth shall bless themselves."

America is a land made up almost entirely of poor outcasts from somewhere else. Nearly every person in the United States today is descended from someone who, either by choice or by force, went from their country and went from their father's house.

This has created a place of great contradictions. And wonderful ironies.

This is a place which considers classical learning an accomplishment of modest value. Yet we expend enormous amounts of our national treasure on an intricate network of public and private grammar, middle, and high schools; of community colleges and vocational schools; liberal arts colleges and great universities - all to train our young people to think and do. Freely.

This is a place where the furious drive to create wealth is held as a glorious standard of accomplishment. Yet we hold, in even higher regard, people who have spent their lives stretching out a loving hand to people in desperate need of help.

This is a place which measures industrial output with a pride usually reserved for marks on the closet door in the bedroom of a growing child. Yet we place extraordinary value in our parks and forests and natural wonders.

This is a place where political passions often run, like the tide beneath a new moon, perilously high. Yet we accept, with but a moment's regret, the election of an opponent.

This place, this New Jerusalem, has been that way since ... in the beginning.

In a small churchyard in Alexandria, Virginia there is a humble monument to an Unknown Soldier of the Revolution. These are the words on his tomb:

Here lies a soldier of the Revolution whose identity is known but to God.

His was an idealism that recognized a supreme being.

That planted religious liberty on our shores; Continued...

Not the New Jerusalem
The U.S.A. is not the New Jerusalem, for the New Jeusalem is not a kingdom of this world. But, the USA has been greatly affected by the New Jerusalem, and for that reason, has been blessed by God for many generations.

The New Jerusalem is the church of the Lord Jesus Christ. The New Jerusalem is that group of people who recognize that Jesus of Nazereth is none other than God revealed in human form. As such, they worship him and him alone. It is their belief that there is an authority above any political king or religious figure that worked to set men free from both political and religious tyranny. The power of the New Jerusalem has never been the sword of steel, but the sword of the word of God's gospel of grace.

But the New Jerusalem has corrupted herself, for she has joined in league with the government of this country. She has soiled her garments by walking in Washington. She has insulted her King by appealing to the powers of human government.

We may charge our political and cultural leaders with corrupting this nation, but the greater blame lies with the religious leaders. Since the rise of the religious right as a political power in this country, the leaders of that group have heaped such contempt and insult on the King that it is a great wonder that He tolerates us at all. Tune your TV to any of the religious networks and yo will see the faces of those who are bringing our society to ruin as they corrupt the church fo teh Lord Jesus. By their gaudy displays of fleshly riches and glory and their attempts to gain political power, these false prophets openly display their contempt for the King they profess to follow. The Lord Jesus never appealed to fleshly powers; he never displayed or applauded fleshly glory, so you can be sure that those who do so things are no followers of His.

I actaully saw one of these leaders on TV patting himself and "christians" on the back for getting Judge Roberts and and Judge Alito confirmed to the Supreme Court. I suppose then, that we should be happy for that preacher's poor jesus: he's been trying so hard to win back the US, and now it will be easier since he has the help of Roberts and Alito.

I almost tremble with rage at such an insult to the sovereign authority of Jesus Christ! Have churches not become just like the Temple of the Lord's day when they put voter registration tables in their lobbies? Have they not made the houses of the Lord into dens of theives rather than houses of prayer when they promote the powers of this world rather than the Power of God, which is Christ?

In days gone by, the leaders of this nation called on the God of the New Jerusalem for help. Now we see the self-promoted leaders of the New Jerusalem looking to the power of Washington to acheive their goals. In fact, it appears that grasping the power of Washington IS their goal. In Old Testament days, Israel was rebuked for looking to Egypt for help. How much worse it is for the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ to look to Washington for any aid! In doing so she insults her King.

It is time for these "leaders" of the New Jerusalem to withdraw from Washington or take off their disguises and own up to what they really are: not citizens of the New Jerusalem, but members of the synagogue of Satan, patrons of the [harlot] of Babylon.

Let everyone who names the name of Christ do what their King has commanded them: preach His gospel. Washington has nothing for you and can do you no good. There is greater power in the gospel of God's sovereign grace than any other force. If you would be any help to this nation, then starve the false prophets who plead for your money on TV. Tune out every preacher who exalts any name other than Christ.

If the New Jerusalem will purify herself of these false prophets and self-serving power-grabbers, then maybe she will have a purifying influence on this nation and society. Until the church returns to her ONE job of preaching the gospel, we can expect things to get only worse both for our society and our government. God help us.
