Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In the wake of last Tuesday’s election, there’s a lot of soul-searching going on among conservatives. Where, many ask, did we go wrong? It’s not simply a matter of tactics. Some are wondering what, exactly, we believe and why. Enter “The Conservative’s Handbook.”

Clearly, at such a pivotal time, the need for fact-based, reliable information on the issues couldn’t be greater. And that’s what Phil Valentine provides in “The Conservative’s Handbook: Defining the Right Positions on Issues from A to Z.” With so few students learning about civics in school anymore, Valentine, a popular radio host heard in more than 40 markets across the nation, clearly and accurately explains America’s success as a free and prosperous nation.

Don’t be intimidated by the scope of his topic. Valentine’s book couldn’t be more reader-friendly. From “America’s goodness” to “Zero tolerance on crime,” he takes readers on a tour of the seminal issues they face today, allowing them to test themselves on the topics that matter most to an informed electorate.

But Valentine also makes you think about the Big Picture. He answers thought-provoking questions about freedom, where it came from, and what maintains it. There’s a reason, after all, that America is the country that people flock to from all around the world -- and as informed conservatives, we need to be able to explain what that is. Valentine reflects on our responsibility as citizens to be involved in our government by holding our leaders accountable, and why it’s critical that we realize why and how our freedoms are at stake.

When liberals ask why you don’t believe in big government, what do you say? Valentine will help you explain your views in ways that help people understand how history has repeatedly shown that it is freedom, hard work and personal responsibility -- not government intervention -- that produces the strongest and most prosperous nations.

Think about it. What do you believe about taxes? How do fiscal issues relate to your freedom and that of your family? What about education? What would happen if only your children were allowed to walk through the school doors because parents were no longer allowed to take part in their children’s education? And were you aware that where gun control is stronger, crime rates are higher? “The Conservative’s Handbook” outlines a principled approach to explaining the conservative values that are the bedrock of American freedom.

Valentine explains that America was founded as a capitalist nation, and that the country has survived because its Constitution provides ultimate control to citizens, not to their government. He shows the stark contrast between America and nations that run on socialism. History has proven repeatedly that people prosper and succeed when they are free to build businesses, order their lives as they see fit, and exercise their own free will to give to those in need.

Yet in far too many nations today, people are not free to do as they please. Many are killed for speaking their minds, for standing up for what they believe. And unless we want to see the same fate to someday befall our beloved country, we need to protect our freedoms.

Don’t assume we have nothing to worry about. Even now, American citizens are fighting in court to protect their freedoms from those who believe America is a bad place. Valentine shows how America is good and how it provides its citizens unique opportunities to become whatever they want through hard work and individual responsibility.

Timely and thoroughly researched, “The Conservative Handbook” may either be read straight through or searched by topic.

Readers also would do well to tune in to “The Phil Valentine Show,” which was syndicated in 2007. Valentine started out in radio challenging listeners to consider their beliefs. He wants them to know what they believe -- and why. He built up radio stations throughout the years and has won prestigious awards for his outstanding show.

He’s also written “Tax Revolt” and “Right From The Heart: The ABC’s of Reality in America,” a 2003 release that has been listed among Amazon.com’s bestselling books.

“One cannot be simultaneously free and dependent on the government,” he writes. “Our freedom to be all we can be is what makes the United States unique. It’s also what makes us good.” Good words to ponder, especially at a time when conservatives are trying to find their way again. They would do well to consult “The Conservative’s Handbook.”

You are proof that Conservatism is correct. Your comments have no depth or substance.

I was looking for just this book
I was searching Barns and Noble last night and as I was getting frustrated looking for a real conservative book spotted The Conservative Handbook. Once I got it home I started reading...I'm paying for it at work since I didn't get to sleep until the wee small hours...Brilliant, informative and I can't wait to get home to continue reading it.

Thanks Phil

Ms. Hagelin,

You represent everything that is wrong with America. With that uptight, fake smile and your marginalized conservative views, you need to get with the times, babe. My recommendation - take that stick out of your a** and replace it with something that vibrates.

Sincerely,

Liberal America

Dear Willard and Responder
There's not much I can add to your comments. You see the big picture and understand the nature of America's domestic enemies... and realize the scope of the threat we now face.

I'd only add this. The Republic is broken. The Constitution has been, incrementally, sabotaged and perverted to such an extent that it no longer effectively functions as the guarantor of our liberties. Therefore, I submit to you, the federal government is no longer a legitimate entity. We have entered into a Jeffersonian Crisis.

Reality
The truth of the matter is that the liberals are very effective in their tactics. They are unprincipled people who will use anything to win the day for their cause. They lie, cheat, undercut, abuse, threaten, discriminate, coeherce, hate, and much more. Then, they turn around and accuse their opponents of the things of which they (the liberals)are guilty. They redefine words to control the conversation and go on the offensive to push back the conservative. If the conservative goes on the offensive, the liberal will act like they have been vilified and unjustly accused. It is all a game to them at which they are very effective. They work to create their own reality in ways that leave the conservatives standing alone and defenseless. Some conservatives know how to handle it and turn the tables, but most don't. The vst majority of Rebublicans don't have a clue how to handle it - evidence John McCain.

Obama not even a natural born US citizen
Hey folks don't you think arguing about "obama policies" is a bit presumptuous?
HE'S NOT EVEN PROVED THAT HE'S A NATURAL BORN U.S. CITIZEN! And the truth is HE CAN'T because he was BORN IN KENYA and he doesn't have a certificate of LIVE BIRTH for the State of Hawaii, only a "certification" for FILE purposes only [basically a note from his mother] and of which would not even allow a person to get a drivers license.

2012 Conservative Resistance Movement:

#1 We do not acknowledge Barack Husein Obama as President of the United States. [Never refer to him as president because he is not fit to serve this great nation. He is not even a natural born U.S. Citizen, as is required to hold office of the presidency.]

If you care about the US Constitution and TRUTH demand Obama stop this charade!

Why the GOP is letting this FACT go unchecked is certainly one of the biggest reasons for the failure on Nov. 4th.

Obama's spreading of wealth

The Constitution is going to
be challenged like never before under Obama's leftist illuminati regime. American values are going to become a thing of the past and we're going to become a "what's in it for me?" society.

The REAL Conservative Handbook
No more Marxist “investments” in private companies, like Bush is doing

No more new federal entitlements, like Bush’s prescription drug program

No more federal intrusions into the classroom, like Bush’s “No Child Left Behind”

No more drunken orgy’s of spending that give new meaning to “waste, fraud and abuse”, like Bush’s various pork projects

No more turning a surplus into huge annual debts, like Bush did

No more running up a $10 TRILLION debt, like Bush did

NO MORE

So Ken
Aside from 'less government', which is debatable, how does your list differ from the liberal's list?

How do liberals express a desire for 'less freedom, less respect for written law, and less democracy'?

Lessons from last Tuesday’s election
1. A Democrat Lite RINO can not beat a real Democrat.
2. Government monopoly education has been "successful" in indoctrinating Democrats and many Republicans that big government is the best solution to any problem.
3. Due largely to our schools, most voters believe that we have a democracy and do not even know what a republic is (was).

FYI, an unlimited democracy allows me to force your money into my pocket just by buying and stealing 50.01% of the votes.

Palin/Anyone in 2012

Gasshit, looking in the mirror you
saw the "BLIND FOOL," you were referring to, YOU ! Why do you want to be here with all the "hating" right. Your argument has no merit, you just spew out the BS that your confused brain semi-prossesses. If you know espanol then you will recognize comemierda, I am sure you have been referred to as such at least 100 times a day. Go grow up and learn on your own and don't force the rest of US to put up with your stupid idiotic ignorant statements, excercise your brain !

Kyle "Deregulations" ..Kyle the world is square obaliar and the democraps just voted a bill to state so !! your check is in the mail...

Are you people actually this stupid or does it require great effort..my bad.. effort means work so that's out !

Gasset
You're a half wit. What part of ILLEGAL don't you understand?

Ted
Hey first of all i'm not an old dogma liberal, second of all it was deregulation that allowed people to get access to loose credt and spend money that they didn't have that got us into this mess, not Bill Clinton muscling the financial sector into giving a handout to the poor.

For Free
You can stop by my place for my own thoughts on what it means to be Conservative...
Just click on my name!

What!!??
This country "survived because its Constitution provides ultimate control to citizens, not to their government." I got this far in the article and then put fingers to the keys. Various laws have made the Corporation more powerful than the citizen. D Can provide execs with extravagent benefits that are not taxable. An individual is nothing compared to the almighty corporation. Look at the Finance situation now. Who is getting the money, 2 trillion, and very little to the citizen.
some how many of the so called conservative and liberal writers are so involved with such a narrow world view.
To answer your question "where did we go wrong?" Answer - "you didnt."

It wasnt your time. Your time to write a handbook was 2003. That is when the Republican party got complascent, listened to only the ones who were claiming credit for a hollow victory, name your industry. War, economy, social concerns,. Stay the course! Well you stayed the course. The slogan was
"We dont cut and run." Now who's running? Carl Rove, Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, all those in prison and all those who will be in prison both inside and out of government.
The myth of Reagan is over. The regrets of Bush is only beginning. You as a party have much to learn about human nature, the needs of an electoriat,a citizen. Look into the eyes of Obama and tell me he doenst know this.

The real reason conservatives lost...
...we became liberal "lite". So now Kyle (reply #2) wants the party to become even more liberal. Yeah, let's take his advice. The lib's got us into the economic mess because conservatives wouldn't stand up for what we thought were their values. Now we reap the consequences of liberal policies of the past and the future.

..............
------Immigration reform, not 'unfettered illegal immigration', you stupid clown! WE have unfettered illegal immigration NOW, you fool! Without reform that's all we will ever have......Thomas Gasbag------

Idiotchild, the politicians idea of reform is to legalize the foreign nationals here while doing nothing to stop the flow of illegals into this country. Tell me stupid, did you actually believe "comprehensive immigration reform" was going to stop the wave of illegals entering this country?

not strong enough on life
at least in table of contents

I have an idea
for you conservatives. now here's how it is i'm not a conservative but i've done alot of blogging on conservative websites and i think i might be on to something that you guys might just want to use. Look as far as i know most Americans beliveve in quasi market orientated policies (like trade agreements with standards for the enviroment and workers). So how about you guys give up laissez faire economics and just go with saying that you guys like minimal smart regulation over abundant counter productive regulation because unfortuately for you guys we democrats don't embrace our old economic dogma(well most of us don't anyway, especially not Obama) and we can now provide a home for people who are open to the type of free trade agreements that can save sonsumers money, who want to reinstate Paygo spending restraints, who recognize that some tax credits ahve outlived there usefullness, that realize W's medicare bill is to costly and has been sucking the money out of the pockets of senior citizens, that it's market friendly to have cheaper portable health care, and who acknowledge that we need to solve the problem of the social security trust fund. So overall my advice would dump laissez faire economics and go with something much less extreme and acknowledge that greed can take just as much money out of your pocket and create just as much debt as the government can, don't be the party of plutocracy be the party of balance who are anti communist but at the same time anti greed. Or at least let people in that have some of those beliefs because pure laissez faire economics can't produce the types of active voters that it used to.

The Conservative's Handbook
I have read Mr. Valentine's book and found it to be very helpful in understanding how our government is supposed to work to protect our fredoms, and why conservatism and capitalism are the answer to the human condition. Everyone should buy at least one extra copy for the liberal on their Christmas list. And yes I say: MARRY CHRISTMAS!

Do you support unfettered illegal immigration just for latinos or for everyone on the globe?

>>>

Immigration reform, not 'unfettered illegal immigration', you stupid clown! WE have unfettered illegal immigration NOW, you fool! Without reform that's all we will ever have.
The hate spewed over reform is what cut the republicans throats, and have turned us into a permanent minority. We can't be a majority party without the Latino vote! Can that fact penitrate your ideological burka, or will you lunatics never learn?

We either get rid of the mind numbed hatred for immigration reform or we can't win. It's that simple, stupid.

David! Good One!
I've refrained from relying on the markets for my retirement, and have long held the belief it won't be there upon "retirement age" -- whatever that means.

You make a good point, so long as those "in power" can make the rules, they will ensure their own success at the expense of us "common" folks.

Maybe they'll destroy the whole economy with their antics, and the United States of America can move on without those selfish interests.

..............
2nd attempt to post this.........

----- Until the Radical Right gets over it's race hatred for latinos nothing is going to change, and republicans will remain a minorty party………Thomas Gasbag-----

Dimwit, most latinos are not in favor of illegal immigration since it is they that will be impacted the most. When you have unfettered illegal immigration you create a race to the bottom in wages and saturate the marketplace with potential workers.

Example…..

A legal latino who installs drywall gives a bid for a project of $15,000. An illegal alien who knows how to install drywall bids the job at $7,000. More than likely the illegal will get the job and the legal latino will lose out to a foreign national who should have never been here in the first place. Illegals are also willing to work for less because they have several families living in one house, which depreciates the surrounding home values.

Do you support unfettered illegal immigration just for latinos or for everyone on the globe?

Come visit us here in Los Angeles and see the catastrophe that illegal immigration has wrought.

Losing our freedoms

I am really upset that the TownHall columnists are not talking about the appalling aftermath of Proposition 8 in California.

If California loses this battle, so does the rest of the nation, so get your heads out of the sand and pay attention to the issue of saving traditional marriage!

This week Scott Eckert was forced to step down from his position of director of the California Musical Theatre in Sacramento, California, merely because he had contributed $1,000 to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign.

It is also appalling that radical activists are busy combing records, trying to find out who supported Prop 8 so that they can violate their civil rights as well.

While the Anti-8 Aunties are marching on churches all over the state, and targeting the Mormon Church in particular for vile treatment, conservatives are once again sitting on our hands, wishing this issue would go away.

Well, guess what! It is not going away! The Nasty Nancies plan to sue, sue, sue, and intimidate the California voters with their thuggish behavior until they get their way.

Don't you all think it is time that we at least get one article about this horrendeous circumstance?

Samis
People who type in all caps have severe anger issues. I recommend intense therapy. You don't really like women, do you? Perhaps you have a little stepford wife (you may not know what that is, I am sure) at home, waiting to bring you your slippers and pipe. You probably slap her around when she disagrees with you. I guess I need a real man like you to teach me a lesson. (you are a man aren't you?)

Samis
I never said I'm a conservative. You obviously did not read my entire post. Just remember what I said - four years from now. No one listened to me about Obama - everyone thought I was wrong - I said he would be elected by a landslide - nobody believed me. As far as being accused of being jealous - I could never be jealous of such a dimwit like Palin. I am just baffled that so many people cannot see through her rhetoric. Extreme right-wing thinking is as bad as extreme left-wing. Next time, we need someone in the middle, like Jindal or Romney. Why is it when a woman doesn't like a woman that men like, she is automatically labeled as "jealous". That type of thinking is so juvenile.

The bedrock of ideals that
the conservatives believe in are going to be severely challenged by Obama and his leftist illuminati cabinet. Our Constitution and all that it stands for is in jeopardy.

Definition of Socialist:
A conservative who has just seen their mutual fund drop 30 percent.

Gassett's Lies and BS
Hey Gassett, I am of the right and I was born in Havana, Cuba so that makes me a "latino." I have never seen any of the BS "hate" you are BSing about. My family came to this country legally. Americans are some of the most generous and caring people in the world, with the exception of the leftist nazis that have hijacked the "democratic" party. Just look at joe the BSbiden and obaliar's "charitable donations." Americans, specially the church going right, have done more to help legal immigrants and even illegal aliens, than any of your leftist buddies ! This country, my country by the grace of God has laws, I wish we could help more people but there is a limit to how much we can do. Why don't you get some of your buddies and go to those countries and help them so that they do not have to illegally come to the US...Why ? Because you'd rather spew your BS ! You better pray the conservatives get back in power or the US will look just like those countries the "latinos" are immigrating from..then we won't have to worry about any immigration...All the conservatives need to do is stop playing nice and stop putting up with BS lies like yours, start fighting for our country !

Ron
When we are attacked, Obama will say, “present”, and wave his white flag.

LOL! It'll be called a "Caucasian Flag" by then!

The next four years are going to S U C K.

Sarah versus traitors
Sarah Palin’s IQ score is 138.
Sarah Palin Knows very well how to run a business successfully.
Sarah can shoot very well and very accurately.
Sarah didn’t know everything about being a mayor until she became one.
Sarah learned very fast and did very well as a mayor.
Sarah didn’t know everything about being a state governor until she became one.
Sarah learned very fast and did very well as a governor – 80% approval.
Sarah didn’t know very much about being vice-president when she was asked to run for vice-president.
Sarah is learning very fast and she will do very well as vice-President. If called upon to be President, she will have learned quickly, and will do very well as President. If we were attacked, Sarah would say, “PRESENT ARMS’, and load her rifle.

Barack Hussein Obama’s IQ score is 123.
Biden and Obama don’t know how to run a business at all and they never will.
Biden and Obama can’t shoot at all, and would shoot themselves in the foot it they tried. Don’t give them any guns. They’d shoot innocent people.
Biden and Obama don’t know anything about being a mayor, and they never will.
Biden and Obama don’t know anything being a state governor, and they never will.
Obama doesn’t know anything about being a state senator, and he never will.
Biden and Obama don’t know anything about United States senators – 9% rating.
Biden doesn’t know anything about vice-president and he never will.
Obama doesn’t know anything about being President, and he never will.
All Obama knows is how to be a rabble rouser and terrorist.
Biden doesn’t know much about anything and he never will.
When we are attacked, Obama will say, “present”, and wave his white flag.

Gassett - you're absolutely right
and to top it off - and to show we're ready to stop with all this anti-illegal immigration nonsense, we should insist that congress hold an up-or-down vote on simply opening the borders - let anybody in who wants to come in. No more enforcement.

Then let's see exactly what the ENTIRE american people think about that.

Forget Past - Act Now & Save U.S.
Call the U.S. Capital today and speak to any member of congress and demand Obama produce his live birth certificate and citizenship papers before 1/20/09 - Call 866-220-0040 or 800-828-00498 after you watch the rally and photos of communists terrorists connected to Obama's campaign offices on Fox News on Utube which should be of serious concern to true natural born citizens of the U.S. who love their freedom and their country.I think you should make that call today and have everyone you know make that call today! Demand your rights to be informed by public servants who have suppressed this information and ask why! Call 866-2200040 and 800-828-0498 today!

race hatred
Until the Radical Right gets over it's race hatred for latinos nothing is going to change, and republicans will remain a minorty party.
So the next time you read "Must show no mercy to illegal immigrants or criminals." stand up or just shut up and watch the GOP fade away. Kick out the haters or forget about this once great party because it will be great no more.

Bush = Dr. Frank N. Furter?
Bush's legacy includes:

1) The ethanol mandate

2) The Patriot Act

3) Two undeclared wars

4) Bolstering of "free trade" agreements

5) RINO stampede in Washington, DC

6) Nomination of John McCain for Prez

Bush transformed from "Reagan Republican" to a likely disciple of Dr. Frank N. Furter of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Please, someone show me where he's been a disciplined conservative! He provided the leftist media every opportunity and reason to defame and mock our common conservative cause.

And to think the GOP wanted to follow his bad acting with the likes of John McCain. Give me a break!

Conservative Constitutionalist Needed

Wanted: Conservative person with no skeletons in their closet, no links to lobby groups or special interest groups with ties to terrorist except them on the business end of a gun.
Must believe in fiscal responsibility, capitalism and mom's apple pie and not give a hoot what other countries think of the U.S.of A.
Must show no mercy to illegal immigrants or criminals.
Please deliver resume to GOP Headquarters ASAP
Sincerely,
The American People

Anti-Slavery Party
That's what we need to once again become! Spend the next few years describing modern taxation and federal policies as slavery. What else would you call it when you're forced to turn over so much of what you earn (well, you could also call it serfdom I suppose - equally unattractive).

You need to get people's attention. Go on offense. Don't play defense, having to defend why you don't want to "help other people". Force the public discussion the way we want - that the government is turning into slaves, one step at a time. The GOP is the party that was created to combat slavery, and that's what's needed here.

Old - On the ''10-20%''
--
It's more likely that "Most of these 10-20% are [not] either 'any way the wind blows' and/or are 'what's in it for me?'" but rather:

"Will you sonzabitches just leave me *ALONE*? Get to hellangone out of my life, okay?"

Now, who has the best chance to articulate a message calculated to appeal to "leave me *ALONE*" folks?

The "Liberals" or us American conservatives?

Go with our strength.

It was "compassionate conservatism" - together with gadarene godawfulness like the Bill-of-Rights-raping USA PATRIOT Act - that sunk Dubbya and his Rockefeller Republican manipulators.

Fall back on the freedom message, quit playing pork-fest politics-as-usual, and *NEVER* cross the aisle unless it's with a machete in your hand and blood in your eye.

The American people remain predominantly American conservatives. They believe in individual liberty and responsibility, but they're so overwhelmed by government regulation, government manipulation, and government intrusion into every aspect of their lives that they've subsided into passive helplessness.

Precisely what the "Liberals" want.

Break that hold over the minds of the American people and the "Liberals" are defeated.

But you've got to put individual rights and individual freedom at the core of your policies, speeches, and proposed legislation.

Make the "Liberals" show themselves as ANTI-freedom. Bring them up on the public stage and force them to be explicit in the demonstration of their socialist tyrannies.

Show the people a clear alternative, not "socialism-lite."

Can you work with something like that?

TO SIMPLE FOR DIM-WITS FOLLOW THE PACK MENTALITY>

Don't Panic

Even a B- student of history will note that only once in the past 56 years has one party held the Oval Office for more than eight years. It seems that over this time, about 40-45% of the electorate call themselves Republican/Conservative another 40-45% see themselves as Democrats/Liberals and the contest has been over the 10-20% who have neither party nor idealogical affiliation. Most of these 10-20% are either “any way the wind blows” and / or are “what's in it for me?”. Most will tell the exit polls that they voted one party out of the Oval Office and the other one in because they felt “it was time for a change.” It was a mistake for the Republicans to think the world had change when Reagan won, and likewise the Democrats are mistaken if they believe the world has changed this November. Its is simply a matter of the 10-20% deciding it's time for a change and in either four years or eight years they will again do the same thing.

Fiscal Conservatism is the best thing that could happen to humanity, with more self reliance and individual effort and less Government intrusions in the economic affairs. But there is a line between capitalism and corporatism. Big Governments and big corporations scratch each others back, when tax-payer is not looking .Even when they watch they can’t do anything ‘cause now they have to deal with two behemoth monopolies

Jefferson got it right years back

...does not even qualify as a proper review of Mr. Valentine's book.

You've purchased and read this *Conservatives' Handbook*. Could you please provide here a detailed review of its contents and ideas as you perceive them? You'd written that you:

"...cannot say I agree with him 100% on all the issues he wrote about. He certainly did, though, provide solid enough arguments to elicit my respect for his position. I thought his development of how America was established, why it was successful and why we should still seek to carry on those principles today was excellent."

Support of the opinions you'd expressed above - *WHY* you disagreed with him in some areas, *HOW* you came to find the work "excellent" - would be deeply appreciated.

Writes Proud:

"The TRUE Republicans not BS Arnold and the conservatives, have better grow a backbone and a pair of nuts and start going on the attack against these slimey scumback lying lawyers that control the demoncraptic party. ... This is not a true democratic party, this is a socialist/communist/nazi whatever it takes to gain power, control and $$."

First, the Republican Party has never really been the advocate of American conservatism. Occasionally - and entirely by default since the dire days of the "New Deal" - there have been Republican politicians who have embraced true conservative ideas, but almost never wholly, or with anything resembling enthusiasm. Even Goldwater was an aggressive "Cold Warrior," not a solid constitutionalist.

Second, the Democratic Party went over to "progressivism" completely by 1904, and from that time forward should be considered our own "National Socialist" Party.

There's no reason to use cute "demoncraptic" terms. They're the National Socialists.

Simply call them what they are.

The GOP has always been about power, perquisites (perqs) and pork. Its roots trace back to Hamilton's Federalists by way of Clay's Whig Party (look up Clay's "American System").

The Republicans have always been in favor of currency inflation (such as we're seeing now), high selectively "protectionist" tariffs (to screw American consumers and benefit the GOP's plutocratic donors), and "civic improvements" (federal pork project spending).

Not that the National Socialists haven't been doing the same thing of late.

Turning the GOP into a truly American conservative political voice is going to be tough, don't doubt it. But the "scumback" parties who will oppose us are *IN* the Republican Party right now.

Lock onto Crash Test Johnnie and the rest of the RNC.

Then think "purge."

Some thoughts on "Handbook's" purpose
I bought a copy of this book right after it was released. I didn't so much believe I needed anyone to define for me how I, as a conservative, should feel about any particular issue. However, Valentine certainly helped me solidify many of my beliefs through his careful and logical discourse of the topics he covered in "The Handbook".

In all fairness, I cannot say I agree with him 100% on all the issues he wrote about. He certainly did, though, provide solid enough arguments to elicit my respect for his position. I thought his development of how America was established, why it was successful and why we should still seek to carry on those principles today was excellent.

As unlikely a proposition as this may be, I would encourage all liberals to read this book, as well. As for myself, I would welcome someone from the left to produce an equally lucid and well written liberal counterpart to this work - I have made it a point in life as a well-informed citizen to consider the ideas of others as respectfully as possible, and have always believed that hearing another side of any issue is all but necessary in developing one's own ideology.

Where is a Leader when you need one?
I think the real problem is that there isn't a leader in either party. We need someone who can guide us and present what we need to us for consideration.

This last election is a good example. I doubt if very many voted FOR anyone. Most of us voted AGAINST someone else. We could follow Reagon as a leader, for instance, but McCain or Obama? Which is the worst? Not the best.

If we had a real leader, then we might be able to get behind him. But as long as we keep get the "also rans" as a choice we won't have a leader. Maybe that is the whole idea though. Without a leader we have to depend upon whomever we get - and those behind him.

Reality
"Government Big enough to supply all your needs is Government Big enough to take away all you have" Thomas Jefferson....Specially your freedom !

Still the oba followers could care less, as long as their handout is there and they have someone who goes along with them to hug them, the Hell with the Truth and the good values of their country, just give me, give me, give me !

Cheating
and the lack of Americans who tuly love their country and the values of freedom and self suffiiency, helped them.

I hope McCain wakes up to the reality that his "compromising" for the sake of "harmony" false harmony only bought him lip service.

"Compasionate" conservative does not mean, leftist spending ! Pres Bush...too late..see what that got you from the left ??dumb A%^% letterman jokes every night and a play depicting your assasination..from the caring party !! B...S....

doopie shtberg is a RACIST A hole.

Mr Valentine wake please wake up to the reality that government enforced Affirmative Action and government handouts has assisted the majority of blacks up the ladder (on electrical lifts). I agree there was time for that but the demoncraps make sure it lingers on so that they can suck more out of it and you expect these people to follow "self reliance," that would require integrity, from the results of this election, they do not know the meaning of the word.

A simpleton like Amy TN and her other pal in stupdity working the demons talking points..shut up about Sarah Palin, you sell outs ! Which of her policies do you hate the most ? Pro life ? Free Market? Caring about special needs children ? You are so stupid no wonder you call yourself a democrat, but your party does not spew out democratic values..maybe if she offered you a better hand out you would sell out to her !

The reality is that there are enough lazy minded simpletons, go along to get along and opportunits, just like drug addicts that deny their addiction, these jerks continue to drag the country down. They would be fine with socialism, communism, it does not matter to them as long as they don't feel alone and they have access to their dope! These are harsh words but this is a harsh reality..No you don't love your country you love what you can get out of it, at whatever price !

Friedman
One doesn't even have to read a book. "Right" policies are discussed at length in videos at http://miltonfriedman.blogspot.com. That website covers the things that should really be important to conservatives without getting into all of the religiously motivated single-issue subjects that cause so much division, even among conservatives.

Do you want to be free? Limit government to protection of life, liberty, and property. The best policies are Libertarian policies. The only problem is that almost no one knows who Libertarians are, and they certainly won't win a national election in the foreseeable future.

Handbook and other
The bizarre truth is the most difficult to accept: this election was about social engineering and affirmtive action, with the assistance of the corrupted media and $750 million of commercials including an infomercial that controlled the media a la communist and nazi countries, spewing out lies and BS for the simpletons. like Amy from TN. Still it was not enough and they needed to cheat like they are cheating now in MN.

Mr Valentine may have some good and true ideas but the reality is that the left is trying to destroy and conquer US. The TRUE Republicans not BS Arnold and the conservatives, have better grow a backbone and a pair of nuts and start going on the attack against these slimey scumback lying lawyers that control the demoncraptic party. These traitors are thugs and if you don't confront them they will continue to push you around. The answer is for conservatives to adjust their "handbook" to include the reality of their opponent's (actually enemies!) dirty tactics and their nazi enforcement. This is not a true democratic party, this is a socialist/communist/nazi whatever it takes to gain power, control and $$. These cheats only abide by the rules when they have no choice or they are setting you up for something else. We are not in church, Washington is filled with these "democrat" degenerates. We need to stop sending "nice compromising" Reps and phonies like BS Arnold to play right into their hands and we better adjust our thinking towards how we fight during the elections while we still have time. Conservatives need to wake up to the reality that this is not a genuine democratic party that loves their country and is willing to accept the other side's point of view when it is better than theirs and for the sake of the US. This is a destroy, divide and conquer, no matter what it takes degenerates like millionaires pelosht and bsreed, chuck u schtmer party, WAKE UP Conservatives !

~~ RIP CONSERVATIVES ~~

Goodbye BUSH and COMPANY!

George Washington WARNED OF THIS CONSERVATIVE FAILED EXPERIMENT in his Farwell Address...

The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries, which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of Public Liberty.

Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind, (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight,) the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.

It serves always to distract the Public Councils, and enfeeble the Public Administration. It agitates the Community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms; kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which find a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.

It is important, likewise, that the habits of thinking in a free country should inspire caution, in those intrusted with its administration, to confine themselves within their respective constitutional spheres, avoiding in the exercise of the powers of one department to encroach upon another.

NEVER AGAIN!

Thank you,
I appreciated this article/review. Judging from some comments, there is plenty of work to do to get back on track. Conservatives may not be perfect, but we certainly do not quit. Our "opposition message" got lost along the way, but we will find it again.

Sounds like this is a playbook to help us communicate conservative values to young people. Perhaps too many of us 1) assume others simply "should know" we're 'right' or 2) use the obfuscatory language of George Will to explain conservatism to others.

Thank you Rebecca, for bringing this book to our attention.

A fish rots from the head first
I agree with Amy that handbooks aren't the solution for what ails conservatives. The problems we face in America are bigger than having some handbook that paints a Rockwell picture of America.

If conservatives really want to know where they went wrong, they need to come up with a convincing plan for how to build a better future for America. The days of pushing for lower taxes while neglecting our fiscal excesses are over.

Whether we like it or not, government has a role in our society, and until those we elect get serious about putting our fiscal house in order, reading handbooks won't accomplish a thing. It's all about governing in a principled way which is something neither party devotes much attention to.

Amy is Right About ONE Thing!

The Republican Party is doomed. Wrong about Palin, though, Deary. She might be a little too populist in her verbalizations, but SHE provided 98% of the energy and excitement in the McCain ticket. The more the media and fascist Democrats dumped on her, the more her star rose.

No, Darlin, the reason our Republic is doomed is not Ms. Palin. The mere fact that the likes of Barack Obama could garner more than 12% of the vote indicates that the NEA has done its job magnificently, cranking out millions of over-schooled, under-educated automatons who buy the global warming hoax and the government-is-here-to-help-you myth.

Republicans will NEVER WIN AGAIN unless the NEA is driven out of our school boards all across this once great land. Roll up your sleeves, freedom lovers, and get control of the schools.

Nothing Original Required
Conservatives do not need a playbook, nor do they need new, original ideas. Perhaps, if anything, conservatives a backbone to stand up for their ideals.

The principles of smaller government, of personal freedom accompanied by self-restraint are not new concepts - Thomas Jefferson articulated these things over 200 years ago. The problem is the Republican party no longer stands for this (at least in its current manifestation). Conservatives just need to take back the party...or start a new one if need be.

Who needs a handbook?
True conservatives don't need a handbook.
Its' plain and simple. Get rid of Palin. She cannot articulate an original thought and can only recite scripted responses. Her rhetoric is tiresome and she KNOWS NOTHING about foreign or economic affairs. She's an embarassment to herself and the republican party. I am a democrat, but if the democrats screw up the next four years, I am open to someone like Bobby Jindal. He is a progressive thinker, articulate and inspirational. He should have been the running mate, not Palin. Please, somebody shut her up! It really makes me angry when I see her stealing the limelight from someone more deserving, like Jindal or Romney and yes, even McCain. Keep it up, republicans - behave as if she is your Messiah, and mark my words, she will be the downfall of the Republican Party (again) in 2012.

freedom and personal responsibility
The party must promote the idea of freedom coupled with personal responsibility, and a critical part of that is tolerance for others.

That will resonate with Americans.

And with that comes elecoral victories.

Nowadays, the social conservatives dominate the GOP, and many Americans find their intolerance offputting.

What may be a sliver of hope is the old guard is out of touch, discredited.

No one talks about Bush, McCain, Karl Rove, Tom Delay.

They are irrelevant.

A new voice will arise, probably from among the GOP governors.

Sarah Palin must distance herself from the social conservatives to be viable. And I don't think she will, or can.

Therefore, I think Jindal in Louisiana, or Daniels in Indiana, have alot of potential.

After all, Obama was largely an unknown three years ago.

And Clinton was largely unknown when he burst on the scene in 1992.

Probably ONE of the titles...
in the Conservative's Handbook is opposition against censorship....my post obviously "disappeared" because I felt the RINO leadership can stick their panderings where the sun does'nt shine....?

NOT a reason to be censored..........

Why did we lose?
Rebecca; We lost because John McCain, when he went to the right, didn't believe what he was saying. Let's face it, McCain, all his life, was liberal lite. When he started preaching conservative values, even he didn't believe it. I could tell by the sound of his voice, that he was not passionate about what he was saying. We got 57 million votes because of Sarah Palin. There was passion in her voice, when she spoke about conservative values. Had McCain chosen say, Joe Lieberman, or a "middle of the road" republican, he would have lost in a worst way. I, and a lot of conservatives, voted for McCain, because we had no choice. It was either McCain or armageddon with St Barack. I hated that. I wanted to vote for something, or someone, not against something or someone.

No Turning Back
America saw the day it began to die on Nov 4th, 2008. The Bible makes it very clear that in the end days people will become so morally corrupt that they will see wrong as right and right as wrong. Through out the history of mankind, all nations begin their slow demise when Homosexuality becomes rampant and laws begin to be passed to protect it. America has turned her back on the one GOD who blessed this nation and has protected it for 200 years. When Christians vote for a man that promotes everything that a Christian should be against it tells us a lot about the morality of our nation. This is not about being Conservative or liberal, Democrat or Republican but about turning from our sin and seeking God's forgiveness and not to send the judgement that is sure to come.

This seems like a book review and not an actual article! Sort of like a commercial for a book!

"L in FL," I couldn't agree with you more: this is nothing more than a "plug" for a book and radio show. Yeah, right, like that is what we really need now: to spend the $14 (plus shipping and handling) for something we really don't need.

More and more, these "pundits" do nothing but write so-called columns that are only plugs for their books -- a means to make themselves more money by taking from us.

Need further proof? Just look at how many books are advertised for sale here on townhall.com or how many of these columnists will reference at least one or two books in their articles.

What we need is ... action ... a call to action.

We need to be involved in the process of defining what the conservative movement is about, where we stand on the important issues, and to devise a plan to overcome the losses we suffered on November 4th by achieving gains in 2010 ... and beyond.

We need a strong, vibrant leader who can unite the party; one with a clear vision and can clearly project that vision -- in terms of definition and how that vision can be achieved.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I, for one, am getting pretty tired of both the movement and the GOP being guided by people who have clearly outstayed their welcome. Both the movement and the party are mocked as being "old and tired." This is due, in part, because those supposedly leading them are, themselves, "old and tired."

Though I have very limited resources, I am more than willing to do whatever I can to help turn things around. And I firmly believe that we should unite, at the grass-roots level, so that our collective "voice" will be heard by the leadership: "Enough is enough!"

What do all of you think; am I off-base here?

Valentine's book ...
should be required reading for every American student. How far we have strayed from who we really are at our core. The younger generation of voters need to know this stuff. They are our future. But we cannot untie ourselves from the cords of our past, as the let's-remake-America illuminati are trying to do.

Whoever is in charge 'blows it.'
Conservatives are as dumb as liberals, and once that becomes obvious, the people flip back and forth. Whoever is in charge 'blows it.'

The 'founding fathers' were a bunch of morons, too. Assuming they got it right is the big mistake that both parties make.

Communism is the same as capitalism. Both are based on the government printing money, as is monarchy. Follow the money, follow the math. There is no difference between any of these systems or their philosophies. They all boil down to 'trust me instead of him,' without any analysis of what is wrong or how to fix it.

You can't fix a problem without understanding how the system operates.

Although "Conservative Compassion' was probably one of the dumbest ideas the world has ever seen. Tyranny is a cold-hearted government. Republicans tend to be heartless, Democrats tend to be brainless. Like the Wizard of Oz, we need a brain, a heart and courage. People seldom have all three. We elect people like ourselves.

As Anarchus observed: Democracy is a system where the wise speak and the fools decide. His maxim is still true today.

If you want to know went wrong, look into your mirror.

Re: Rep??
Where we went wrong was that we tryed to play it straight and do everything on the up and up, ever hear of this? "Nice guys finish last!"

CIVIL WAR, liberals VS Conservatives
My wonderful son said something great yesterday and I thought I'd share...

He said,:
"Mom, don't worry if there's a civil war from the liberals, We conservatives, know how to use guns and they don't"

Promotional noise...
--
...without substantive content in this article.

The lessons of the only two even *marginally* conservative presidential candidates nominated by the GOP in my lifetime - Goldwater and Reagan - boil down to this:

Freedom is the message that sells.

Accordingly, I'd ask conservatives to look hard and long at an idea Grover Norquist brought up some years ago: the Leave Us Alone Coalition.

Too many "social" pseudoconservatives have been trying to drive the Nominally Republican faction of the big Boot-On-Your-Neck Party to grind it's heel upon the lives and liberties of their neighbors in the name of "morality."

Gay marriage, drug use, prayer in the "public" schools, religious symbols in courthouses.

That kind of divisive, distracting, superficial crap.

As a result, the American conservative movement has given the "Liberals" a gift they've exploited mercilessly.

We're perceived as oppressors. As *ANTI*-freedom advocates.

That's the image of *EUROPEAN* conservatives. The soical and religious tight-tochus'd "stern father" types our ancestors left Europe for America to escape.

Like it or not, religious whackjobs, your message is poisonous to most real Americans.

They don't want your kind of government, and they're showing it at the polls.

On the other hand, you could join quite readily in Norquist's scheme.

Every American dislikes having "too much government."

Too many bureaucrats up in his grill. Too much gun-grabbing. Too much "public" school spending and tyranny. Too much oppressive regulation. Cases like *Kelo v. New London*.

Reader, if you want the GOP to rise again, we have to focus on the freedom message again.

Not "compassionate conservatism" but American conservatism.

--

It's too far gone
We went over the cliff last Tuesday and the founders vision was lost.
When people have lost the core values that made us great, they are rudderless.
When they vote for what they think they'll get rather than what's best for the country there is no turning back.
The blacks want what they perceive is whitey's unfair share of the money.
Women didn't vote for Sarah because she is pro life.
The lefties tied Mccain to bush forgetting we haven't been attacked in 7 years, great patriotism there.

Anyone really think we can un-wind in 2 years that which the left has been doing to this country for 40 years?

Obama will complete the journey to communism in just a very short time and there is no longer a way to stop it.

Corrupted by Power
Why did the denizens of the GOP stray from their roots? A condition I have named Beltwayitis. It's an affliction which besets conservative minded Congressional neophytes shortly following their arrival in DC. They quickly find that their ideas of small gubmint and fiscal restraint gain them no favor among the DC cocktail party crowd( made up of liberal media darlings like the Wilsons and freeloaders from the chattering class). Frustrated by their inability to game the legislative system, they begin to play the "you vote for mine and I'll vote for yours" game. Eventually they become seduced by the idea that the best way to secure reelection(the #1 goal of every office holder) is by porking their constituents(pun fully intended). The biggest problem is systemic. The people who can reform politics are the biggest beneficiaries of graft.

FAMILY GOVERNMENT
Where does Government start? What is the most basic and simplest example of Government?
Remember K.I.S.S.--Keep it simple stupid.
Government begins with FAMILY, and is established for the sole purpose of survival and continuence with the leader or leaders of the family, being a Mother or Father or both.
The leader/leaders are responsible for upholding the values and principles of their purpose and to keep their family 'safe'. They 'work' for the 'good' of the family and create rules (laws) to teach 'right from wrong' and 'good from evil' using rewards and consequences. Each family member has a 'role', delegated a 'job' when capable, and a 'voice', but even when there is disagreement among family members, their goal/goals remain fixed. Their goal is fulfilling their purpose and striving to improve life to pass on to their next generation.
Our Founding Fathers established our Countrys Government on the model of the Family and until our Government returns to this model, our Country, our families, will continue to deteriorate. We, the Nations Family, will not survive unless that happens.

S.O.S...D.D.
Does ANYBODY in the GOP remember what that (SOSDD) means?
I think NOT...

The Grand OLD Party has strayed so far off the beaten path they command NO respect from real conservatives and value voters. They keep offering up the same old same old.

Personally I would love to see a struggling single mom get in who would utilize the power of the pen (veto) and go through the governments "check book" and put a swift halt to all the "special interest" spending.

I would Love for our SCOTUS chief justice to examine the unconstitutional laws on the books and do some serious editing.

I would love to kick out all the Congressmen and women who have served more than 3 terms and get them out of office because all they're doing is padding their retirements.

I would love to see lobbying cast by the wayside and let our reps actually talk to the people who they represent.

WE THE PEOPLE deserve and should demand what was framed in our Constitution no more no less.
If We The People actually got it we would be once again the best experiment in SELF Government in the world.

Book Review?
This seems like a book review and not an actual article! Sort of like a commercial for a book!

let's see
I find it sad that you would write "in the wake of of last Tuesday’s election, there’s a lot of soul-searching going on among conservatives. Where, many ask, did we go wrong?"

First off, it might help to nominate a conservative!! Secondly, all you have to do is look at the plain fact that the GOP leadership in D.C. is not conservative and hasn't been for quite some time (check Buchanan's Book: "Where the Right Went Wrong: How Neoconservatives Subverted the Reagan Revolution and Hijacked the Bush Presidency" written 4 years ago!!!

We're talking OLD NEWS here!!

for some answers please refer to this speech given by the most Conservative member of Congress:
http://www.house.gov/paul/congrec/congrec2003/cr071003.htm

NEO-CONNED (to think that the GOP put up a guy for amnesty, treasonous bailouts and global warming HOAX carbon taxes!! thats a con job alright)

Nobody to blame but ourselves...dump the talking heads of the media and get some real education and leadership!!

Handbook may focus conservatives

The diversity of opinion among conservatives often would have one believe they are working toward different goals. In reality they all have the same common interest which is less government, more freedom, respect for written law, and democracy.

They may articulate these principles differently with varying methods to accomplish the same goal.
