Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Don Imus could have saved himself a lot of trouble.

Instead of insulting the superstar black women's basketball players at Rutgers University, he should have told his listeners that white males are idiots who do nothing but drink beer, ogle women and scratch themselves. That way, rather than hearing himself rightly denounced for his rude, discriminatory remarks, he would have heard … nothing.

Seriously, is there any group you can attack with more impunity than males --particularly white males?

Here's how I put it during a recent appearance on "The O'Reilly Factor":

"Our boys are being abused by the media in a different way ... All you have to do is turn on the TV for 30 minutes and tell me how men and dads are portrayed -- as ignorant and stupid and lazy. The white, Anglo-Saxon male, the young teenage guy, is probably the most discriminated against kid on the face of the earth right now."

Although my comments on the subject were brief, this simple observation about how badly today's males are treated garnered a huge reaction. E-mail poured in. Viewer after viewer thanked me for defending just about the only group it's "PC" to diss. (Another frequent target: conservative Christians.)

A typical reaction from one father was this: "Thank you for your courage. It touches my heart to hear someone speak on our behalf."

I obviously touched a raw nerve. Viewers felt strongly enough to leave their TV sets, log on to their computers and search for my e-mail address to share their feelings.

A college student wrote: "You are absolutely right that men are being portrayed as idiots on TV. It's sad in my college (which is largely female-dominated) how poor of a rap men get. Granted, some men deserve what they get, and I have nothing against women, but for young men like me who are trying to uphold the values of chivalry, it can be very degrading."

Another viewer, a self-described "fed-up father of three boys," said he was "delighted to hear someone echo my longstanding observation that fathers these days are almost universally ridiculed by the media. It's been years since I've seen a humorous TV commercial where the joke is on the woman, for example."

How can this be? For one thing, there's a lot of money to be made from portraying males so contemptuously. One of the best videos I've ever seen, the Merchants of Cool (produced by PBS) carefully documents why the modern media robs young males of their dignity. As I note in my book, Home Invasion, the marketing industry, led by MTV, deliberately cultivates a grotesque male image known as a "mook" -- their definition of modern teen boys:

"They are wilder and bolder and ruder and cruder than the average teen boy, but they are designed to keep our sons hyper and addicted to watching the aberrant behavior so that ever more ads can be pushed their way. They are the obnoxious pro wrestlers, the death-defying stars of the Jackass TV show, and the guys on MTV's Spring Break specials belching and dancing crazily with scantily clad women they met ten minutes earlier."

Sadly, the tentacles of radical feminist thought are poisoning the image of groups of males in different ways. If you watch a few commercials or sit-coms, you'll see that dads are sloppy dolts who are always the last to know anything. Where's the outrage? If you listen to the often foul and violent rap and hip-hop music of today, you'll hear that young black and Hispanic men are hate-filled, selfish bigots who degrade women for fun. Where's the outrage? If you're a father-to-be, your preborn baby can be legally killed without your knowledge, much less your consent. For crying out loud, where is the outrage?

Speaking of outrageous, consider what's happening in collegiate sports: reverse discrimination through Title IX, courtesy of radical feminist power and the U.S. government. Ostensibly, Title IX was designed to end sports "discrimination" against girls. In practice, it's less about opening doors for girls and more about slamming them for boys.

Title IX dictates strict quotas for schools that accept federal aid. If "too many" boys are interested in playing sports and "not enough" girls want to play, there's only one way to achieve your quota: Tell some boys to hit the road.

The ugly reality of this new discrimination against our nation's young men hit my family in the gut this year. Our son Nick, a high-school senior, has put countless hours into his track team for four years now. One of his top college choices was James Madison University in Virginia, which has a terrific design program and a super men's track and field team. We recently heard a silly rumor that in order to comply with Title IX, the men's team will be cut after this school year. In disbelief we called the school, only to hear an exasperated official tell us that men's fencing, wrestling, track teams, swimming and other sports will, in fact, soon be a memory. They've all been axed.

"What about all the boys who have been working hard for years so they can participate in college sports?" I asked.

"There's very little for them. Everyone on campus is upset -- the teachers, coaches, the students. No one wants this to happen," was the reply.

If that doesn't make you shake your head in dismay, try searching for college scholarships. There are scholarships for every minority group you can think of: scholarships for various races, scholarships for gays and lesbians, even scholarships for nudists. But I couldn't find a single scholarship exclusively for "white, Anglo-Saxon, straight males." Nada.

The truth is, your "average white boy" in America is a pretty decent human being. Yes, various minority groups have been treated poorly in our nation's history. Yes, women haven't always been recognized and valued as equals. But guess what? It ain't my son's fault, and he shouldn't be treated as if it is.

There are consequences when we, as a society, tolerate the constant images of males of any race as knuckle-dragging Neanderthals. When the media portrays fathers and grown men as sots, we rob our boys of the role models they need -- of the role models we all need. When we allow the feminists to "punish" boys by denying them opportunities, we degrade the virtues of hard work and equality.

Yes, the free-market system should be holding Don Imus accountable for the way he degraded an accomplished group of minority women. I also think it's time for a little civility across the board. What do you think? Please e-mail your thoughts to me through my Web site, www.HomeInvasion.org. I'll post comments on the site in the coming days and weeks and make sure they are passed on to media outlets.

In the meantime, please go out of your way to validate the value of the decent fathers, husbands and young men in your life. I think you'll be surprised, as I was, to find out how much they long for a little R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

Rebecca-Right on Target!
Middle age, white males! Or conservative Christians! Don't expect any tolerance for these folks.
I can't wait to see what happens to the next white guy who makes another "racist" remark with new Don Imus "law" now in effect. Wanna know the new law?

Here's the law: "Any white male who makes a racist statement which is deemed racist under the new "white male racist" law or who thinks a racist statement under the new "Don Imus Racist Law" will be terminated from his current employment ASAP. This law will apply only to white males over 18. Other white males who make racist statements will be sent to "Tolerance" school for a period of at least 6 months. The law, aka, Al and Jesse's Law,will be strictly enforced by a board called "The Tolerance and Diversity Board."

"Their word will be final. The Tolerance Board will include all races and genders except White Men. And only those who are deemed "liberal."
Additional laws eliminating certain rights of White Men,also being considered by the board, will be posted soon."

There it is. Sad. Yes. But.... There's more than just a little truth to it!

“Sharpton In The Morning” To Replace Imus
Tuesday, April 10, 2007 6:48 AM

BUSINESS NEWS:

NEW YORK – Just hours after radio talk show host Don Imus was killed in a tragic fire at his MSNBC Studios office, The Reverend Al Sharpton has stepped forward as a replacement host for the show. “I’ve always admired the audience share ‘The I-Man’ carried and would be proud to take over the ‘I-Microphone’”, Sharpton said.

In addition to picking up the Imus radio show, a spokesman for Sharpton Management, Inc. (SHAM) announced that effective immediately the former Imus Ranch will become The Sharpton Ranch.

Sharpton Management, Inc. also owns Sharpton Suit Rentals, Sharpton Fashion Mart (f.k.a. Freddie’s Fashion Mart) and the Molotov Cocktails chain of drive through liquor stores.

Shares of SHAM (Nasdaq) traded up 2.75 at $17.25 on the news of the recent acquisitions.

Two observations from yesterday
The first is from a very Christian man who insists that the church has been "wussified" by Wimmin -- and speaks admiringly of a men-only church service held in a gym, where men can come in droopy pants and backwards caps which they need not remove, are guaranteed in and out in one hour max, and can scratch and fart and burp as if they were at Possum Lodge. "Women," he told me, "force men and boys to wear suits to church so the neighbours won't think they are on welfare." His entire attitude is that every vestige of civilization is some kind of conspiracy against the True Manhood of Manly Men and that only by completely excluding women from the church (not just relegating them to a space behind a curtain where men cannot see them) can True Men Express Their Manly Manhood as God Intended.

The other was a group of young men heading for the upscale Catholic Boys' High across the street from my house. One of them was describing his break-up with his girl friend to his admiring friends. "If you think you're gonna be a f*ing actress or model," he said, "you're f*ing out of you f*ing mind."

Yep, those are the role models I want my boys to imitate.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T ...
a man's single greatest need (yes even above sex!). That is why in the marriage relationship, the wife is commanded to give it unconditionally. It does not have to be earned, as so many wrongly state. We would never say that our wives have to "earn" our love, but for some reason Ephesians 5:33 is not looked upon as a similar command for women as it is for men.

Read the book "Love and Respect" by Dr. Emerson Eggerichs.

Rebecca
Thanks.

"Collective Guilt" is SUCH B.S.!
My favorite part of this well-reasoned essay is Hagelin's point that her son is not to blame for the hardships that women have suffered in the past purely because of their gender. If we don't persecute women solely on the basis of gender, it makes sense that we should not persecute men solely on the basis of gender. That's REASON in action. Collectivism and Groupthink are poisons that destroy everything they touch.

Yet why do the voices in favor of Collectivism seem to scream louder and more shrilly than ever these days?

As a woman, I don't feel my case is helped in any way by downgrading or down-rating men. In fact, it hurts my case, as it fuels the bitterness of a Gender War that does neither women nor men any good. I want to be taken as I am, as the individual woman God created. If I receive any awards or accolades, I want to EARN them based on my merit alone. Yet if we enshrine Groupthink and aim our Collectivist arrows against men, I have little chance. The best I can do is to accord the male students in my classes all the respect and dignity I can. If an individual among them does something to forfeit that respect, then that is HIS doing alone and does not reflect badly on his male classmates; they shall continue to receive aforementioned respect and dignity. Collective Guilt is garbage. Let's throw it away, people.

Thank you
Thank you. American society's institutionalized antipathy towards MEN in general and WHITE MALES in particular will not change until reasonable moderate and conservative women end their silent indifference, converge and overtly counter the perfidy commited by the forces of Female Chauvinism: NOW, NARAL & other members of the "Female-Entitlement Industrial Complex."

Will that happen? Not likely because it will require most women to stop functioning as single cells in group organism called the "Female Human." Too many American women are not only indifferent, but are quite amiable if not altogether amicable to the current "men=bad/women=good" status quo WRT all the implied benefits: Affirmative action/quotas, Divorce Industrial Complex, Welfare Industrial Complex, etc. They are not likely inclined to recind their privileged status. You are naive if you think that the Female-chauvinists won't continue to fight tooth & nail IOT maintain said status quo.

Pamela's Single Voice
Good comments! My favorite part of Rebecca's eassay? It also has to do with her son. Did you see what that kid is facing just trying to go to college? Can you imagine it. And why. Two reasons! 1.His race-White. 2.His gender-Male.

I'm telling you Pam,this political correctness, aka political madness, has reached levels that would be a laugh riot if not so real.

I wrote Rebecca a personal e-mail thanking her for being stand-up, for being unafraid and sharing her outstanding voice with all of us.

SJR
Thanks for a great lesson on how to NOT get people to go to your blog. How unfortunate that not every article on TH today has to do with Imus and Sharpton.

AudiR10, I assume you're referring to Doug Giles, or is it Powers? Either way, the guy is an idiot so who cares what his opinion of a real church is?

Thanks for speaking out, but!!!
Thanks for speaking out, Rebecca, but you are a lone female voice in a sea of political correctness which states that men are bad, women are good. You dont see much in the media promoting men or promoting good examples for our sons to emulate or admire. Women and womens accomplishments are promoted constantly. News concerning men...well...mostly about batterers or murderers or rapists. And most women sit by and say and do nothing because they actually like the status quo. Shows that degrade men are most popular with women. Witness the change even in the usage in the english language. Men are referred to as "males" Even Rebecca falls into this usage. Women are referred to as women, but when the word man or boy or men or boys is appropriate the word male or males is used. Male what? Male is a generic designation that refers to ANY species, unlike the words man, men, boy, boys. Yet mostly men are referred to using the generic "males" as a means to dehumanize men. And its now become general usage. Wonderful society we live in.

Title IX
Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, is going through the same thing as James Madison in Virginia. Several varisty sports are being cut using the "budget" excuse, but five are men's teams and one is a women's team, ostensibly because of "Title IX" issues.

So much for "diversity."

Rebecca is one of the good guys.
It's a mistake to overanalyze the language here; we should be careful lest we feel tempted to regard Hagelin's use of "male" in the same light that others have regarded Imus's use of "ho." My thoughts: her use of "male" is designed to reflect the way our society is coming to view men and boys -- and she's saying it like it's a bad thing. She's trying to alert us to the problem.

As for me, I believe we get further when we look around us and see, not "Males" or even "Men" as a Monolithic Group, but fathers, brothers, sons, husbands, and friends. Similarly, we get further when we see, not "Females" or even "Women" as a Monolithic Group, but mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, and friends.

C.S. Lewis wrote once that each individual human being carries a little piece of the Divine inside him, a virtue of being God's unique creation. If only we could be led to see our fellow human beings in this light! Admittedly, it isn't easy; I strive for it every day when I have people cutting me off in traffic, driving too slowly, dawdling in the supermarket line with six thousand coupons, etc. But it's certainly an ideal worth aiming for.

Finally!
I'm tired of screaming at the t.v. when I see how they portray the white male. Just watch any commercial. The Fedex commercial comes to mind, when a boss asks a white male to put a push pin on China. Or the Staples commercial where the black female boss says that staples now saves us money on the things we use the most. Then come the idiots, 3 white men and 1 white women.

Am I wrong?
Or did the 'Sharpton & Jackson Racial Protection Agency' just got given unlimited power to referee our language?

Disclaimer: In accordance with the Sanitation in Language Not Voted or, Interpreted Protection Act of 2007; the previous message was sanitized, sterilized and, pasteurized of any incorrect minority offending epithets by Sharpton Jackson Inc., not to be mistaken for the racial FCC.

Solution for Idiot TV Males
I'm sorry, but I just can't get too riled up over the doofus dudes on TV. Nor do I care to listen to people whine about them. Seriously folks, this is some pretty frivolous stuff.

Don't like the way a show portrays men? Don't watch it. Don't like the way any show at all portrays men? Lose the TV (I've actually gone this route, and am leading a life blissfully free of dopey sitcom and commercial dads). Don't like what the idiot box teaches your children? Make sure you teach them better. You get the idea. It's ridiculous when minorities whine about this stuff, and it's equally ridiculous when we do.

Hagelin does bring up some good points, particularly in her remarks about schools and her rather potent "It ain't my son's fault!" line. But the complaints about portrayals of men in the media (What? You didn't know that they don't much like us white fellas?) seems like a waste of typing to me.

Thanks
Rebecca,

Thank you for speaking the truth about how fathers/men are dishonored in America.

I stopped going to Willow Creek Community Church because I tired of hearing the feminist message that women are good and men are bad.

Rebecca, you may also stop by any County divorce court Monday through Wednesday in the morning to hear how our government treats fathers with contempt. It's free and you do not need an invitation.

"i" before "e" except after "c"
Y'know, the commercial where the man driving a vehicle says it is an immutable rule of spelling, only to have his female partner - riding shotgun - iterate a list of exceptions.

But overall, we have a society where white men lose their jobs for making derogatory comments about anyone whereas other people make careers out of the mass slander of white males.

Here in Canada, feminists and various minority groups can get money from the government to....ask for more money from the government. They refer to it as advocacy "work" as if they are actually producing anything. And the fundamental underpinning of why they should get more money is because white men - en masse - have done them wrong.

Our constitution specifically authorizes affirmative action (ie reverse discrimination) for any group that is historically "disadvantaged". The subtext is that the only group that can't claim historical disadvantage is healthy, straight, white, Christian males, and a few other hangers on who might total a third of the population. Of course the individual does not matter, so an Ivy League educated lesbian will get preferential treatment where as white trash do not.

Ms. Hagelin has illustrated that the Don Imus kerfuffle goes deeper than merely being an isolated incident. However, I think it goes even deeper than she suggests.

Are fictional examples meant to be
representative of an entire group? I think that's a question worth asking before we get our proverbial knickers in a wad about fiction.

A negative depiction of a character does not necessarily suggest that all who share that character's gender/race/ethnicity must also share that character's flaws. It's important to look at the supporting characters, the other characters surrounding him or her. If EVERY character of that particular gender/race/ethnicity has the same flaws, then there's a problem. Not all the men on "24," for example, are alike. Therefore I'm hesitant to judge that program as insulting to men.

However, I do agree that television tends to gravitate toward the stereotypes when it comes to its characterizations. We have Boy-Men and Nebbishes and Dysfunctional Neurotics on the male side; we have Ditzy-Blondes and Ball-Busters and Dysfunctional Neurotics on the female side. Where on TV can we find relief from such stereotypes? I know a much better place to look than so-called "reality" TV:

CLASSIC FILMS. The masterworks of the 1930s-1950s.
Men's roles were stronger and more diverse. Heck, WOMEN's roles were stronger and more diverse. The great characters of classic cinema were individuals, not representatives of Types.

It wouldn't do us any harm to revisit these films. And to read a little more, too, while we're at it.

Guys are so stupid...
A few years ago, my college-graduate son and his then-girlfriend were spending the day with me and his father at our mountain lake condominium. While we had some concerns about her various attitudes (read feminist), my husband and I determined to be gracious to her.
As my son, his girlfriend and I were on the deck chatting, laughing, and enjoying the view of the lake, something was said that prompted her to respond with, "Guys are so stupid." Within a nanosecond, my son's expression went from smiling to one of disbelief. I'd had it with her nonsense and self-absorption. I gave her what my son and his brother have described "the Mom look" and asked her a question. "Why the hell then, are you dating my son and wasting your time if you believe that to be true?" She was postiveily shocked at the challenge and responded with the weasel response of, "Well, I didn't mean all guys and I was only joking." Unsmiling and determined she wouldn't wiggle out of being so rude, I reminded her she said it, he and I understood what she said, and that she wasn't very bright to say something like that to her boyfriend's mother, knowing that both his parents consider both our sons to be God's gracious blessings to us. She looked at our son as if to say, "Help!" He just looked at her, unsmiling and silent.
Later that afternoon, my son and she left. The visit was over. I do believe she couldn't wait to leave...and to somehow try to convince my son she was only "joking".
Within the week, they were no longer dating...much to my son's relief.
Oh, as one last point, my son is a bona fide rocket scientist who is going to school in the evenings to get his MBA.
Yeah, I'm sick and tired of white males being portrayed as buffoons, idiots, brain-dead, and the butt of tastelass jokes by the oh-so-tolerant. It's wrong. It's rude. It's over the top. It's crossed the line. It's no joke.

WASPHSMACEMPs
I concur with Ms. Haglin's assessment and as a 57-year-old White, Anglo-Saxon, Protestant, Hetero-Sexual, Middle-Aged, College-Educated, Male Professsional -- or if you wish WASPHSMACEMP's -- I have contended for the past 20 years that it has been open season on such as us, the WASPHSMACEMPs, and there was nothing we could do about it. I have been the victim of both racial and sexual discrimination during that period and have pretty much accepted it as my lot ... that I belong to a distinctly American minority group that probably is the most discriminated against in today current atmosphere of "political correctness" and because of past sins (original sin?) we are paying for the perceived transgressions of generations past. It may not matter that this latest generation of WASPHSMACEMPs may be the most enlightened in that it has learned to accept individuals and individuals -- regardless of race, religion, gender or sexual orientation -- and to look on them basically as equals, we still must pay, and pay, and pay, and pay for our legacy of the dead white men who founded the United States and then played leading roles in the nation since that founding nearly 230 years ago and the establishment of the current democratic Republic, some 220 years ago. Ours is to endure and persevere, for we love this nation and accept all 300 million residents -- including the 25 million illegal aliens.

Cry Me A River
Woe is me. The poor white male. I just happen to run the world and control everything in society. I can even be an average white boy and life is probably going to turn out alright for me because I'm a white boy. This article is for all those white men that wish for the old days where they had all the power instead of the 85% of the power they have now. Al Sharpton didn't kick Imus off the air. It was Les Moonves, white man, and corporations, run by white men, that pull ads for the show. Except for American Express, but still owned by white men. All of the other media that continue to push the story. They so happen to be run by, hmmmm let me guess, white men. Imus just screwed up and said something on air that they all would have laugh at while in the country club. Imus will back though on air somewhere though. Do you know why? That's right because his a white man.

Dave Stone
What kind of TV are you watching? Most of the programs in the genre that you are referring to have white males experts in the leadership roles. There are also shows (not as many) with competent black leadership roles. There are issues in every segment (racial and economic) of society. For every white person who feels discriminated against, there are many other blacks who speak of racism, only to have their claims dismissed because one can point to some weatlhy blacks in society. Blacks are told that there is no discrimination against them in society any more, while whites still own the majority (not all) of top leaderships positions in the country. Its the same argument for A LOT of black families too - "some white people may feel discriminated against, BUT IT ISNT MY FAMILY'S FAULT, so why should we have to pay for it?" So where does that leave us?

forder
Woohoo - two commercials and there is a conspiracy to keep the white man down. PuhLeeze. If anything they are equal opportunity commercials. There are tons of commercials showing whites as the dominant force of the commercial as well as other races. How about the Pine Sol commercial where the black woman is always popping to help other's mop the floors? Should we see that as positive or negative. After all, she is helpful to others, black and white, but she is also helping them CLEAN like a skilled one-tooled maid. By your reasoning, we arent sure.

Imus has no one to blame but himself
Sorry gang but Imus has no one to blame but himself for putting his trademark cowboy hat in his mouth. He's been around the block with his sexist/racist shtick just one too many times and it's finally worn thin. I can't wait for the usual conservative blame the victims routine to kick in! The Rutgers basketball team made him say those horrible things. It's all their fault! They're not as pretty or cute as the opposing team is! They play tooooo rough. Enough with the pity the poor misunderstood white guy crap already. Imus knew damn well what he was saying.

White males ARE buffoons if . . .
they think this clueless column is any good.

If you really knew what's going on with college athletic departments, you'd know there's a culprit bigger than Title IX:

Football.

Now, I love football, more than most people. I believe football is one of the greatest inventions ever.

But here's just one budgetary fact of many: College football teams book hotels for the Friday nights before HOME GAMES, so their teams can FOCUS.

Their coaches demand it, and their publics demand whatever the coach says as long as he can win.

If you write a column or a post that whines about cutting men's athletic programs, and you don't bring up football, you're clueless.

Too much
Imus, and all of his ilk, are idiots. They degrade themselves in their degradation of almost everyone else who happens to enter their radar. I listened to him one time and that was enough.

I don't watch tv shows that base their story lines predominately on degrading any person, sex, or ethnic group. My choice. I have more important things to do like wash my car in the rain.

We would be better to focus our attention on important issues that detract from the stature of our country and legal residents.

Hagelin
Good article, but what the he77 did it have to do with the Imus story? The man had gotten away with his tripe for many years,he has only himself to blame. One more thing, for those of you who believe Imus to be a conservative, guess again. In no way can you call him that, same as you can't call POTUS a conservative. As for this crap about poor white males, all I can say is, I'm one of 'em,if I'm acting like a fool, then I'll take my lumps. If you are right, and you are doing the things you should,it should not matter what ANYONE says about you. Words are just that, and if you let them bother you that much,I believe you may need some help.

Yes !
I too am tired of the b?ll bu'\?ting women seen on TV, in commericals, on the streets, and in the malls.

Feminists attitudes are so deeply embedded in the female ego that it is now a perminnet poison.

I do not know about anyone else, but I have been saying this for more than twenty years. Finally, someone else is now enlightened.

I contribute the beginning of the "Baffoon male" to Bill Cosby and his TV show. It started way back then.

Pansyrose
You go girl-and your son will go far as well. This is priceless. One wonders if she thinks her father (who is probably paying for her education) is a knuckle-dragging oppressive patriarch who's intials are ATM. Were she our daughter, the money would have stopped yesterday. Thanks for sharing!

Political Correctness
It's a little unsettling to go into a doctor's office and be told "you're white, you're male, you're sixty years old. You have a do not treat sign on you" but it's the face of modern feminism and political correctness dressed in a white lab coat today.
It's sort of reminiscent of the period after the Second World war when they took a group of individuals infected with G. Nisseria (a bacterium that causes one of the then more prevalent social diseases) and witheld penicillin treatment just to see what would happen to them, versus the others who were treated appropriately with the antibiotic.

AudiR10, 7:17 AM
Ma'am, on most topics, I relish your opinion; you're intelligent, articulate, well-informed, and insightful. But on issues involving men as a group, you're hateful, bigoted, vicious, and derogatory. It's a topic you should stay away from, until you've spent at least a year under good counseling, dealing with whatever trauma the men in your upbringing caused you. I weep for your inner agony; but your words are corrosive, and unless you want to continue to be part of the problem rather than part of the solution, please get help.

I'm completely serious; this is not a put-down.

animalgirlismakingplaydoughgiraffs
You wrote: "Women make almost all of the purchasing decisions in this country. They stock the pantry, the medicine cabinet, and the family closets; they choose medical plans and cleaning products and drive the family car. Commercials have a purpose; they are designed to work. They are aimed at women, and so speak to women's frustrations, because women are responsible for family purchasing decisions."

Yes. So clearly, women in America think men in America are stupid, lazy, overgrown boys who produce nothing and are worth nothing... because that's how they're portrayed in commercials aimed at women.

You've nailed the problem right on the head.

"What are you recommending?"

I'm recommending that you show a little respect for the men who protect you, provide for you, and make your life possible. I don't think I'm asking too much.

Liberals can be understood best if you remember to turn the clock back at least 40 - 50 years. Their thinking always begins with the way the world was about that long ago, and they're still trying to solve those problems, not the ones we face today. Why? because that was the time in their lives when they were best able to feel relevant and superior; and like any addict, they habitually attempt to re-create their most effective high.

Addiction counseling recognizes that most addictions begin as an appropriate (if ill-informed) response to an uncontrollable situation in childhood, and causes destruction because the behavior continues long after it is no longer necessary. In like manner, Liberals keep reciting the problems and demanding the solutions that were relevant fifty years ago.

No, my narcissistic friend, men have not controlled everything in western culture since the 1960s. Men hardly control anything anymore. They continue to hold major positions mostly because of cultural momentum (e.g. it takes a great deal of time for any structural change to manifest itself). But men have no power in the modern world.

oppressed white males
Perhaps we need a "Caucasian caucus" in the Congress to advance the interests of oppressed white males, like Murtha, Reid, McConnell, Boehner, Hastert, Lott, Specter, Hoyer, Webb, McCain, Robertson, Brownback, Hatch, Kennedy, Biden, Hunter, Cornyn, Dodd, Warner, DeMint, Coburn, Baucus, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., etc., et.al.

endocelt
Yes, the presence of a fair number of caucasian males in Congress compensates me COMPLETELY for the insult of hearing how useless and stupid I am 4,000 times a year every year of my life for 30 years. Now that you've reminded me of just how powerful I am, I am completely relieved.

Or is it possible that it's immoral to denigrate anybody, regardless of how fortunate they may be in other ways?

Sorry!
You know, when I didn't get that scholarship I worked hard for and deserved or that job I really wanted because, even tho I was more qualified, I was a white male, I blew it off as the way society was at the time and dealt with it and went to a different school and got a different job because life goes on. It seems tho that that has evolved into a mindset that it is now okay to bash the white male, or degrade him and so on, yet in no way are we allowed to counter attack without the fear of being labelled "racists, homophobes, sexist and so on. All I have to say is, "I'm sorry but it's not my fault. I wasn't the one that created your hardships or insecurities. Your need to feel superior over those you degrade only make you less of a person than that to which you aspire"
Can't we do away with the stereotypes and get along? Just sayin...

White Men-Don't expect sympathy fromABC
Check out this unbelievably stupid and racist article by ABC Nightline's Terry Moran. Don't feel sorry for the "Dukies". He should be fired.

Advertising
I do get tired of the pointless doofusication of men in TV commercials (it's not just the white men either. How about that commercial with the older black couple at the pharmacy counter, in which all that's lacking is the dog collar on the inarticulate, stupid guy who needs his wife to shout about his ailments to the whole store?).

But whether we're talking commercials, sitcoms, or hour-long dramas, it's ALL advertising, one way or another. Ever notice how those brilliant, insightful women in cop/lawyer/doctor shows, with the thousand Ph.D.s and 44 foreign languages, are all gorgeous, skinny women under 35 with perfect hair? Boy, is that realistic. And totally non-condescending. I mean, smart women can identify with a screen character even if she's not buff, south of 40, and perfectly coiffed -- right? Right?

If you want to see advertising aimed at men, watch ESPN or the History Channel. It doesn't depict them as stupid IN RELATION TO WOMEN. But it often does depict them as victims of natural selection waiting to happen. (See beer commercials.) In fact, I've never met a woman who really thought Animal House or Old School was a funny movie, but guys from all walks of life do. You can't tell me the male characters in these movies are portrayed as wise and strong.

Entertainment media seek to push our buttons. Seeing blond women wander, for no obvious reason, into the picture of whatever someone wants to sell to guys is laugh-out-loud funny. Sometimes it's a car; sometimes a beer; sometimes it's a whole TV series. Watch me, the series says, and you will be in the presence of blond women.

Yeah, yeah. I could be offended at the fact that there doesn't seem to be a demographic out there that needs a realistic depiction of ME to galvanize it to buy something. Or I could remember that I have a life, and a good one too.

Here's a tip, a very interesting tip. In my judgment, if you want to expose your son primarily to advertising that will encourage him to see himself in a positive light -- give him a subscription to Forbes.

"Silly column. I'm tired of people whining about how hard it is to be white. It's just an excuse used by the mediocre to explain away their failings. You never hear successful men complaining about how hard it is to be a white man; you normally hear complaints from C-average high school students whining that they can't get into every college they want, and wanting to blame it on black people."

On the contrary, what I mostly see, and what I feel, is that as a WASP, my hands are tied. It is my own sex, the guilt-ridden, self-hating liberal white male, that ties my hands. I have to swallow garbage without firing back. Why should I be civil and not use the n-word, "ho" and "faggot" at every opportunity if others can defame my kind with ipunity? Heard any good redneck jokes lately? What about n-word jokes? Like, how do you keep Rutgers women basketball players from bouncing on the bed? Put velcro on the ceiling.

It has been argued in the past that disparaging portrayals of minorities had a negative impact on that segment of society (think "Amos and Andy"). Once upon a time, a black male walking down the sidewalk of Texarkana, TX would step into the street to get out of the way of a white man. Now, it's the opposite. What created this transition? The natural superiority of black males coming to the fore? Or the media portrayals of white males as being weak, frightened, inept fools, and media portrayals of black males being violent, strong and aggressive?
In watching old movies, look at the relative portrayals of men and women. It was the MEN who were arse-kickers. The idea of a woman punching someone with a fist was so absurd that it was a shocking aspect of Karen Allen's character in "Raiders of the Lost Ark". As recently as the 1980s, women weren't two-fisted brawlers. Now even history-based fables have females in combat when they never would have been.

Prior to the cultural revolution, men were portrayed as confident, protective, competent. Then came the anti-heroes of the 1960s, the protagonists whose only virtue was that they were the center of the storyline. THAT is where the assault on manhood began. A friend recently asked me if I was going to see "Casino Royale". I told him no, since I'd seen some scenes in trailers. I didn't like that M had a sex-change operation. I didn't like that a female in one scene chastised James Bond and meant to teach him how to be James Bond. Sorry, I'll stick to reruns of Sean Connery.

As Pogo would say, "I have seen the enemy, and the enemy is self-hating liberal white males."

Fine with me
"Women tend to find commercials that show women as being very competent and men as needing to be taken care of funny. Not because they hate men, but because they are sometimes frustrated by the disporportionate responsibilities they have in the family."

Suits me. Let's return to Victorian times when ALL the responsibility was on the husband. You gals wanted equality and claimed to be responsible. You gals wanted to be in the workplace just like guys.

Now choke on it.

WHO IS THE REAL RACIST?
Who’s the REAL Racist? Yes. Imus is guilty: Guilty of poor judgment. As a controversial public figure, targeted by the left; he gave the enemy the ammunition necessary to get him fired. In doing so he did Conservatives a disservice by removing a voice of reason and influence from the media, thus giving strength to those who would destroy our country. For this Don Imus is guilty and deserving of criticism, but not dismissal. The real villains are the two BLACK RACISTS responsible for the firing of Mr. Imus: I refer to the two head NI**ERS: Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson. Yes, I dare used the “politically incorrect” N” word. But the real question is this:
What IS a NI**ER?
Definition of a NI**AR: An African American RACIST who hates the White race: Who refuses to take responsibility for problems they cause to themselves, and blame Whites for all their self inflicted problems. These NI**ERS attempt to deflect the blame for their misfortune on others, and will therefore do anything to inflict harm on Whites. Such NI**ERS include Black Ghetto Gang bangers who blame us for their station in life, and people like Lewis Farracon, Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, and the Mayor of the so called “Chocolate City”, Ray ‘Ni**er’ Nagin, who capitalize on the misfortune of their fellow Americans of African descent order to advance their own political agendas. Yes, they are NI**ERS, and as such are a disgrace the majority of descent African Americans. These pieces of HUMAN GARBAGE place a black cloud and over what are otherwise good descent people.

Poor white men
Imus must be kicking himself for making a career out of insulting minorities, women, and the weak. I mean besides becoming a millionaire what does he have to show for it?

Didn't we have
Didn't we have this same discussion several decades ago? About June Cleaver doing the ironing in pearls and high heels, Sanford & Son, etc. etc?

As I recall, when movies/TV reined in all the trivializing, stereotypic roles they were using for blacks, Mexicans, women of all races, we ended up with better programming.

What a concept: improve quality by dropping the BS. I wonder if it'd work again?

Don't watch TV
I have read many of these posts and I have to say
that I don't know what many of them are talking
about. What little I have seen on TV is not complimentary to anyone as far as I can tell.

This Imus thing seems to be immensely popular on
Town Hall. And apparently the general consensus
is that he is a liberal - or at least the liberals loved him. Again, I have never seen him. I don't know.

But what I do know is that he was dumped. I'm
not pretending that it was not a mainly self-
serving move. Whichever channel hired him did
not want to lose advertisers and so they gave him
the boot. To my dying day I will not be able to
figure out why Rush Limbaugh still manages to
survive. He has been twenty plus+ years of
negativity, to put it politely, and he is still
there. I can only hope that this is finally
the beginning of the end for him.

I could say the same thing about Ann Coulter. But she is such a lightweight, I am not sure that
her presence on the scene makes much difference.
