Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Many voters didn't think it important when it surfaced during the presidential campaign that Barack Obama's friend, the 1960s radical William Ayers, is now a professor of education at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Ayers' preoccupation with inserting his ideas of "social justice" into public school curriculum didn't seem an issue to make tracks in a national election.

Now we find that in the election week, the most respected education journal, Education Week, featured a front-page article on "social-justice teaching." This confirms that accusations about "social-justice teaching" are not inventions of John McCain's partisan consultants, but are matters that vitally concern everyone who cares what the next generation is taught with taxpayers' money.

"Social-justice teaching" is defined in Education Week as "teaching kids to question whoever happens to hold the reins of power at a particular moment. It's about seeing yourself not just as a consumer (of information), but as an actor-critic" in the world around you. This revealing explanation comes from Bill Bigelow, the curriculum editor of a Milwaukee-based organization called Rethinking Schools, which publishes instructional materials relating to issues of race and equity.

Bigelow admits that this is "a subversive act in some respects because it is not always encouraged by the curriculum." Apparently, he intends to provide the encouragement.

In Bigelow's book "Rethinking Columbus," he wrote that he encourages his students to walk in the shoes of groups that have been oppressed or disenfranchised. He assigns students to role-play various oppressed groups in the United States and foreign countries.

"Social-justice" lessons highlight past mistakes in U.S. history rather than our accomplishments and opportunities. Emphasizing problems and injustices rather than achievements is given the highfalutin label "critical pedagogy."

David Horowitz of the California-based David Horowitz Freedom Center says that social-justice teaching is "shorthand for opposition to American traditions of individual justice and free-market economics." He says it teaches students that "American society is an inherently 'oppressive' society that is 'systemically' racist, 'sexist' and 'classist' and thus discriminates institutionally against women, nonwhites, working Americans and the poor."

Sol Stern of the Manhattan Institute describes Ayers as one of the leaders in "bringing radical social-justice teaching into our public school classrooms." Ayers argues in his books and articles that "social-justice teaching" should be injected into various curriculum subjects.

Education Week identifies the "special-interest groups" that promote "social-justice teaching" and provide curricular materials, online resources and "professional development" (i.e., indoctrinating teachers). These groups include an affiliate of the American Educational Research Association, the Cambridge-based Educators for Social Responsibility and the Washington-based Teaching for Change, in addition to Rethinking Schools.

The lobbyists for "social-justice teaching" and "critical pedagogy" sponsor well-attended conferences (no doubt at taxpayers' expense) and publish magazines. Teachers 4 Social Justice attracted 1,000 educators to an October seminar in Berkeley, Calif.

Lesson plans are available from a 30-year-old magazine called "Radical Teacher," which was founded as "a socialist, feminist, and anti-racist journal on the theory and practice of teaching."

Education Week identifies Ayers-style "social-justice teaching" as rooted in the writings of the late Brazilian educator Paulo Freire. His best-known book, "Pedagogy of the Oppressed" (1970), is considered a classic text of radical education theory and is regularly assigned in education schools.

After Freire's theories took hold in teachers colleges, it's no surprise that they made their way into public schools, especially where low-income and minority kids can be taught oppression studies. Schools that specialize in "social-justice teaching" exist in Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia, among other cities.

The Social Justice High School in Chicago, for example, has a 100 percent Hispanic or black student body. The principal admits that the lessons taught there are often "atypical," such as teaching the relative likelihood of whites and minorities being pulled over by police.

This district recently announced plans to open a "gay-friendly" public high school called Pride Campus with 600 students, half homosexual and half heterosexual. Official materials say that the curriculum will "teach the history of all people who have been oppressed and the civil rights movements that have led to social justice and queer studies."

It is clear that "social-justice teaching" does not mean justice as most Americans understand the term. Those who use the term make clear that it means the United States is an unjust and oppressive society and the solution is to "spread the wealth around."

Ayers declined to be interviewed for the Education Week article. His comments were unnecessary since the article was generally favorable to "social-justice teaching" and dismissive of its critics.

Obama on Education

The fact is "Mr. Education Expert" William Ayers received 50 million dollars from the Anneberg Foundation to improve education in the Chicago School System.

He enlisted the help of Obama. The two of them Implimented a plan and 50 million dollars later the Chicago schools have a 50% drop out rate.

Catholic Social Teaching
In light of Schlafly's clear disdain for concepts like "social justice" and its incorporation into US schools, and also in light of Townhall's Hugh Hewitt's repeated reminders of the Catholic Church's positions on voting for Obama and other Democrats, I find the following website on Catholic Social Teaching--which uses phrases like "social justice" throughout--enlightening. I encourage all free thinkers to check it out. http://www.osjspm.org

Obama Denied Medical Aid to Babies
Babies Crying in Terror
The 'Born Alive' baby who has known the closest contact with another human any human can experience - the baby has been inside another human for months.

The baby has kicked, stretched and some even suck their thumbs. Every need has been met by its human host - shelter, nourishment and safety.

Suddenly one day the baby is attacked with chemicals and poisons.

The baby enters a world bent on death and destruction towards its life.

The baby has never seen a butterfly, puppy, pretty colors or things all babies enjoy or had any human say I love you.

The baby enters the world in excruciating pain and the best trained Medical experts in the world refuse the baby any aid - in a hospital - where all facilities are available and the Doctors have sworn to protect all human life - except his.

The baby is thrown on a cold table and left to die in some hidden place.

The baby struggles to breathe because a human is born with the human will to survive. The baby cries in terror and sobs for help - that never comes - no one cares.

The innocent baby tries to live with every breath and dies alone, abandoned like a used kleenex, never having experienced anything but pain, rejection and hatred.

When the baby finally dies a death of torture and the ultimate rejection any human can receive, it is such a worthless human it doesn't even have a 'Death Certificate' issued that it ever existed.

For a few minutes, hours or days, that baby WAS an American Citizen, that should have received all of the 'Rights and Protections' under law, that any other American Citizen should have.

Michelle and Barack Obama and most Democrats, have done everything humanly possible, to make sure this baby does NOT even receive any pain medication.

Carl from MT

Did you miss the point of the article?

Social Justice as taught by religions like the Catholic Church concerns itself with "equal opportunity."

The Social Justice Liberals teach in public schools is about "Special Opportunities" for some but not all.

The history
of the human race is replete with oppression. Repression that has happened in the U.S. is just a new speed bump on the really rocky road of oppression. I look forward to returning to the U.S. in the spring and having students deal with this subject... justice. Zero sum economics, risk/reward, and merit. I may be just one voice crying in the wilderness on campus, but at least I'll allow both sides their best voice and critical analysis of it all.

As a side note, "spreading the wealth" conjures up an interesting metaphor. Who wields the knife that "spreads" the wealth? Whose tub is dipped into first, and who is the toast?

Free graduate courses to Philly teachers
And what do they teach to make better teachers?

Classroom control? Teaching technique? No.

They taught social work. They taught about outreach programs to keep families dependent and on the Dem plantation.

Needless to say, after my two years of experiencing classroom chaos (caused by ill conceived "self esteem," "mainstreaming," and "social promotion" doctrine), this Elvis left the building.

KEEP THESE WORDS IN MIND WHEN YOU VOTE TODAY AND VOTE TO SAVE THIS REPUBLIC!

Remedial math
A friend teaches remedial math to the graduates of such Chicago schools, who are admitted to college under special programs.
They are learning basic arithmetic, such as how to add fractions.
One such student came to my friend's office in tears, crying "They lied to me! I had all 'A's! I thought I knew what I was doing!"
He knew what "social justice" was.
This was not lack of mental capacity. Once he realized that he knew no math, he took double classes and summer school and finished his 4 years of high school math and 3 years of college math in under 3 years.

They never got it
Years ago there were folks who drove around with "QUESTION AUTHORITY" bumper stickers on their cars. When ever the opportunity presented itself, I would confront the driver with “Why? Why should I question authority?” They never got it, no not one. None of them realized that I was taking the advice of the bumper sticker to heart in questioning the authority of the bumper sticker. Such ideas are like unto when one's wife says “You are being argumentative!” There's no way to win. If one says “No I'm not”, she says “Ah ha! You have just proved my point!”
So this is what the “social justice” Pollyannas are doing, they say “question authority” but when kids start to take them up on it and question their authority, donuts to dollars says they will, in the words of Bart Simpson, “Have a cow, man!”

Now That Explains It.
Phyllis excellent, excellent column. The "experts" are wondering why, Black and Hispanic children are continuing to still, lag behind in core subjects and score low on standardized test even when a ton of money is thrown at the schools.
Instead of teaching kids how to master math and science like the Japanese and East & West Indians and Europeans and some African Nations do, we are going in the other direction turning our boys and girls into little social injustice pusssies, that way they're easier to control they'll be incredibly ignorant with really good hand eye coordination culled from video games.
Rap and Reggueton music is their "new culture" which includes thuggery, well, when you only pay attention in class to social injustice studies it entitles one to be a victim and since said victim lives in the richest country in the world, either you get your entitlements or you take them by force while smoking weed or crack.
Entitlements such as free health care and welfare and reparation payments are the expected norm, a redistrubition of wealth so to speak, tax those no good plumbers who make over $250.000.00 how dare they question the tax policies of the Barr.
Just suck it up and move on and with Barr running the White House his buddy and pal little Billy A will be tapped for a position in Education on the inside.
Like I've been saying from day one, little Billy A of Weather Underground fame, (he misses it so much, things were purer back then, you could bomb as much as you want with no retribution, so a Black cop got killed big deal he worked for "the man"), is still taking his fight to "the man", the difference now is he's doing it from within.
We're going to have to keep our eye on little Billy A of Weather Underground fame he misses it so.

Monopoly
Otherwise intelligent people who would never allow Halliburton to have a monopoly on education and indoctrination will support one given to the government. The solution is vouchers.

I agree
I have taught in two major cities in their public school systems most of the time in the inner-city. This kind if indoctrination is alive and well. It is disgusting!! I had to take a group of primary students to an assembly featuring a man whose picture that was used on the program cover was he and Yassar Arafat shaking hands. Looking back, I wish that I had had the guts to walk out taking my young, lower socio-economic, all African-American students with me.

Anne:
It appeares you really don't understand the "social justice" definition that these educators have made. Re-read Phyllis's article (if you actually already have) and pay attention to the last few paragraphs.

Sauce for the goose...
"Social-justice teaching" is defined in Education Week as "teaching kids to question whoever happens to hold the reins of power at a particular moment."

Tomorrow, in all likelihood the people will elect a Democratic president and larger Democratic majorities in the House and Senate. I expect that conservatives, including Old_&_n_the_way, will question them continually.

Anne:
I really don't know what a neo conservative is, or how one would determine if PS is an element of that set. PS's article, although perhaps resorting to some cherry picking, does illustrate a radical trend within the "social justice" curriculum. Does this make her a neo?

History for example (as a subject) is replete with those questioning the status quo. Do you really think this needs to be more explicit and manifested in a "social justice" curriculum? With the actual problems primary and secondary agers (and their parents) are experiencing it seems that the ability to question authority is the least of their worries. Critical thinking, which it seems you espouse, is a different story, and I whole heartedly agree. Onward to a classical education!

Carl on social justice
That website is interesting, but seems to go a bit far.

I believe the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) paragraphs 2419-2436 is the definitive teaching on Catholic social justice.

William Ayers like
many don't have the courage to admit their wrong. So is the way of today.

Unbelievable
How about teaching kids to walk in the shoes of those who overcame adversity and made something of themselves? Whatever happened to that tradition? And we wonder why our kids can't read, write or do math. The government will run out of money for the illuminati educators to throw at their broken system. Then what? The little tykes will grow up and euthanize them. For their own good.

Anne of NC
"After all, we want our citizenry to be educated about both the good and the bad parts of our history. We want them to understand that achievement and ethics must be partnered. We want our children to learn that it is not only okay to question authority, but is in fact, often imperative. We want them to understand our place in the world, not our dominance of it.
We want them to be proud, not arrogant."

There is a fallacy to your thinking. Who gets to decide what is good and bad in history? What we want is our children educated to the facts. We want to study cause and effect and most importantly results.

"We want them to understand our place in the world, not our dominance." That is a very telling comment about yourself. Ask yourself why and how we are dominant. Bet you can't answer that with any clarity.

Your comments are full of self loathing. Yet I find it them also arrogant, the thing that you espouse against. Apparently Republican cheerleaders know so much less than you.

Your hubris is your petard.

You post one philosophy while practicing another.

Homeschool the best option
I no longer consider the "public schools" worthy of our tax dollars since they cater to the far left only.

The Bored of Education should be disbanded and the responsibility of education should belong to parents. They spend about $10,000 per kid with terrible results. Give the parents the same money and they will be responsible for education, and knowing where their kids are..truancy becomes all but obsolete and so does much of the mischief type of crimes. Parents can go to jail if they can't keep charge of their charges...

Kids can learn doing everything if someone who loves them is there to guide them..

soliton - classical education at home
soliton wrote:

"Critical thinking, which it seems you espouse, is a different story, and I whole heartedly agree. Onward to a classical education!"

You may be glad to know Classical education is one of the fastest growing facets of the homeschooling movement. Both the Trivium and Mentorship models are exploding.

I have a website that lists resources that I have found particularly useful to Classical education homeschoolers at http://www.lisa.crews-family.org. It's a work in process and needs some updating, but it may interest you or anyone else seeking resources related to this type of alternative education.

We're off to one of our Classical education homeschool groups this afternoon. The art teacher we hire every other Tuesday doesn't run the class as an "express yourself" crafting time, but rather teaches form, line, perspective, proportion, shading, etc. He even dares to CORRECT the children and have them redo things not up to standard. Guess what? The kids LOVE him and can actually TAKE correction. This week they will get back their State Fair entries and as usual, many of them will get blue ribbons they won.

Unfortunately, any school bought into the "self esteem" and postmodern views will have a very hard time stomaching it.

How about this?
Teach math, reading/comprehension/writing, science, logical reasoning, history, geography and basic ethics. Social engineering is not what we pay teachers to do. Social Studies is not a subject - it is a tool for indoctrination of children. Indoctrinating our children with socialist mumbo-jumbo and feel good, everbody is just alright platitudes is in truth a criminal act and a violation of Parents pre-requisites. It is my job to teach my children right from wrong and manners in a polite society.
Some facts: the majority of members of the NEA graduated in the bottom 5% of their college class. Principals and School Superintendents are on average, less qualified than the teachers they are placed in charge of. Don't dispute these numbers - they are readily available in the public purview, for anyone to research. The minority of exceptional, high caliber individuals in the teaching profession have to toe the NEA Party Line to remain in teaching at all and after a few years of fighting the systemic non-teaching environment ingrained in the U.S. government schools, they usually quit in dispair or disgust.
The American education disaster requires a complete dissection, sanitation and re-building, in order to eliminate the systemic "social engineering" and political indoctrination that is purposely poisoning the
minds and stunting the intellects of our children.
Individuals such as Ayers and the scum that run the NEA should be tried for crimes against humanity, for the damage they have done the children of this nation.

Social "Justice"?
It is interesting that leftists love the term "social justice". There is an inherent assumption of the existence of an objective moral law.

Leftist theory tends to be morally relativistic, that is, based on the idea that morality is subjective. Therefore, "social justice" has no inherent meaning, but is just a euphemism for "whatever policy is hip right now among leftists".

Ken from PA

“Social Justice as taught by religions like the Catholic Church concerns itself with ‘equal opportunity.’”

Unfortunately this is not entirely true. It should be, but…

There is a worrisome movement within the Catholic Church, repeatedly denounced by both B-16 and JP-2 called Liberation Theology that looks at poverty as a repercussion of sin and seeks a solution through political activism. It further looks to Marxist or Socialist tenants as the political means to combat poverty.

Most “social justice ministries” working at individual parishes throughout the country flirt precariously with Liberation Theology if not outright practice it. Often the resident pastor and local bishops are on board as well. This movement more than any other factor, in my humble opinion, is how Roman Catholics can morally justify an Obama vote.

One more on the value of rigor
I'm just back from dropping my older two at piano lessons.

Their teacher takes a very classical approach (more in line with the Trivium model) by requiring her students to memorize scales, chords, complete a rigorous series of music theory studies, and research and write many essays on composers and their influences. Her goal is for her students to transition seamlessly into college level music classes. Her college aged students will tell you their music classes are EASY because Mrs. T made them do all that theory all along and those scholarships they got were, in large part, due to her high standards.

Of course, her studio is bursting at the seams and there is a long waiting list. She is so full homeschoolers are only allowed time slots between 8am-3pm so she can take private and public schooled kids.

The kids are doing very well because there are high expectations of them and their parents know what a gem they have in Mrs. T. No one complains about her rates because they are well worth the investment-the results are excellent. If they weren't, we'd pay someone else.

Ayers
Bill Ayers spent money from the Annenberg foundation to write books on "Socialism", and trying to make teaching "socialism" a part of our public schools ciriculum.

He also support Chavez and Castro.

Obama has been "a very good" friend of Ayers for years.

Communism and socialism starts with "our children". How can any true American support their ideals.

Social Studies and Socialization
Hydrogen Production Engineer wrote:

"Teach math, reading/comprehension/writing, science, logical reasoning, history, geography and basic ethics. Social engineering is not what we pay teachers to do. Social Studies is not a subject - it is a tool for indoctrination of children."

You just stole my punch line. Here in AZ the homeschooling law requires parents to be the primary teachers of core subjects: Mathematics, Science, Grammar, Reading, and Social Studies. I often joke that I shamelessly break the law by teaching History instead of Social Studies. (Usually only conservatives or homeschoolers get it.)

Anyway, you're fighting an uphill battle on that even among alleged conservatives. The number one question asked of homeschoolers (even by those to the right of center) is, "What about socialization?" The moment you suggest the PARENT take responsibility for making quality social interaction happen on a regular basis, they decide THEIR public school is just fine.

I wonder
... what the world will do tomorrow if BO is elected? Will they be dancing in the streets in Iran? Cuba? Venezuela?

Social Justice, Karl Marx & Geo. Orwell
What did your kid learn in school today?

Social Justice (and it's cousin, economic justice) are peculiarly leftist concepts which seek an authoritarian solution to a perennial human problem: "The poor shall always be with you."

Both concepts are decidedly anti-theistic at their core. Religion is deemed 'mind numbing' and unfruitful for the 'correct' worldview. The humanistic State alone is responsible for that manifesto. These complicated matters should not be left to freely associating individuals.

Ethics are situational. For their Social Justice to work, there are no absolutes - except when the State absolutely says so.

Economic justice is accomplished when the State commands those that have to give to those that have not; each according to his/her ability & need.

Collective bargaining is necessary, not individual effort. Individuals are deemed selfish and 'unfair'.

Equality of outcome - not equality of opportunity - must be aggressively pursued.

Ever read the Daily Kos, et al? Those deemed unworthy or undesirable will be on the receiving end of 'two minutes of hate.'

Karl Marx would be proud. Geo. Orwell would say, "I told you so."

And your tax dollars are paying for this, people.

The NEA, the most powerful lobby group in D.C., are the foot soldiers in this revolution, and viciously oppose ANY changes which might include school choice.

Ayers and his Annenberg cohorts are thrilled by this irony. The 'Land of Liberty' & 'My Country Tis of Thee' funneling billions in tax dollars from the citizenry to finance their pointy-headed, ivory tower academics to train the revolutionaries right here, in our own classrooms, to our own children.

They have a friend in Obama.

Ask yourself, "Why?"

Then ask yourself, "How can I stop funding this far, far left authoritarian nightmare?"

Beircheart From MN

You may very well be correct. I can not presume to know what is going on in every ministry.

I can say this whole idea of separation of Church and State is bogus.

As I see it, the original intent of the founding fathers was to protect religion from the viewpoints of government officials. Not to protect the government from the viewpoints of the church.

The religious community is a member of the community and should have a voice in how we are governed. I may not agree with the Quakers on war and peace issues but I welcome their input.

I may not agree with the catholics concerning abortion or government care of the poor but they have the right to express their views.

Religions as a full member of the community have the right to influence government policy.

Government on the other hand should never be allowed to force its viewpoint on religion.

In the few instances where there is a conflict i.e. vacinations, abortions, prayer, the common good must prevail. Who defines common good? The entire community.

just a guess
This is a funny article given the timing. People with views that Schafely strongly opposes are going to be in charge of most branches of government following tonights elections. My guess is that she will quickly come to value criticizing the people who hold the reins of power, and will not consider herself a marxist for doing so.

Social Justice
Social justice in the sense that Paulo Freire and other "critical pedagogists" such as William Ayers use it is a radical marxist view of social justice.

To compare the use of the term in the way that Ayers uses it is completely different from the way that the Catholic Church uses the term. Human dignity, the importance of the family, governments supporting families and communities only when they cannot help themselves, etc are not principles that Ayers, Freire etc talk about when the teach social justice.

That's why the author puts social justice in between speech marks. Social justice is a nice sounding term for their more radical principles and aims.

Wake up conservatives, don't be fooled by left language that sounds nice.

Toxic Social Justice Curricula
School is not the place to teach opinions.

It is the place to teach FACTS.

If you learn sufficient FACTS, you may be able to formulate opinions.

If you learn enough facts, you can synthesize them. If you study logic you may be able to formulate an argument.

ENOUGH facts means the WHOLE of world history before you start making value judgements on entire cultures.
This is done in EUROPE.

I personally went through the indoctrination process and personally saw the results of it in public schools.
Arrogant, racist, opiniated, angry and illogical fact-challenged students who either ultimately fail, or flourish in specially designed "minority" friendly school or social or business environments set up with lower standards and anti-white gestalt, or with normal standards and the intent to marginalize and exclude whites altogether.
Overwhelmed, abused, disrespected and ineffectual teachers who are told that social scientists have proven that black children do not learn the same way, or the same things as whites, and cannot learn from white teachers.

This is hateful, Anti the American Way of free thought, racist, and shameful and the more people find out that this is happening and protest, the better. With OBAMA, this will be where the tax dollars go...to create more propaganda and entitlement and grievance factories and push the Euro American founders of this country into the dustbin of history.

Trying to reform public schools is an exercise in futility. By definition, whether we choose to recognize them as such, public schools are socialist institutions. It is time for conservative parents of every stripe to remove their children from public schools. And better even than putting them into other institutional settings like Christian schools or parochial schools, educate them at home. Home education instills not only the knowledge of the subjects that are needed to function in the world, but instills the values of the parents so that children become emotional mature, and able to function as adults, at younger ages than students that live in the extended adolescence that is predominant in institutional settings.

Critical thinking/Indoctrination
Hello everyone,
It seems there are many more ex teachers such as I, and disgusted intelligent parents out there, than I could have imagined in my wildest hopes.

We should form a coalition ! This TOXIC SOCIAL JUSTICE CURRICULUM is, or should be, ILLEGAL in PUBLIC FUNDED SCHOOL. It is not a curriculum. It is a THOUGHT CONTROL SYSTEM.

Parents only can teach opinions to their children.
Teachers can teach facts, and the methods whereby opinions can be argued.
Textbooks should give facts and let the students decide what they think based on an array of facts. That is called "CRITICAL THINKING".
Critical thinking has come to mean CRITICISM OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION.
Where is this going to stop, folks ? We can't afford not to teach with rigor and to keep the canon of great Western writers (who after all invented all this business) alive !! What say you ?

re/brainwashing

Thank you Dave.
Keep writing on this blog.
I will check in from time to time.

UNBRAINWASHED of the WORLD,UNITE!!!

Beyond HOME schooling
I agree about home schooling. My mother taught me to read before I went to school, and how to be a human being. School was a waste of time.

BUT I don't think AMERICA should give up on EDUCATION. AT LEAST, SOME schools should be FREE OF THE SOCIALIST or INDOCTRINATION or whatever you want to call it, agenda.

So,unless we are all going to MEXICO (joke) like Dave here's friends are, we have to do something HERE because even the HOMESCHOOLED will eventually hit the real world and be unable to find jobs as teachers, artists, or any number of jobs that will be increasingly controlled by the thought police .
Suggestion: A COALITION (with links to elected officials!!!!) of moderately conservative, Western-oriented, Judeo-Christian traditon-oriented teachers, artists and writers who are sick of all the nonsense.
Suggestion: A THINK TANK with a MODERATELY CONSERVATE PUBLIC FACE that can qualify for grants and donations to publish research and spread the word about things like the Navajo teacher who promotes rigor in classrooms, and the Socratic method, Shakespeare, and Latin being taught with excellent results.
Suggestion: A RECOMMENDED LIST OF CHILDREN'S BOOKS THAT PROMOTE FAIR AND FACTUAL TELLINGS. This includes TEXTBOOKS AND ILLUSTRATED BOOKS.
Suggestion: A BLOG/I might do one when I get some time after Christmas.
Any feedback on this welcome.

Communist Propaganda
This is becoming a nightmare. Yes, Ava seems to be one of the few free-thinking Americans left in this country. I never thought I would see this happen here, but it is. I survived the first round of the 1960s...I do not want to go through that again.

I will fight along side anyone else who will stand up against this take-over. America still means freedom, liberty, justice, and good to me. And I will fight for those ideals as long as I am breathing!! Janine

a good bargain
The sad thing is that while Schafely is criticizing teaching "social justice" because it would have students looking at how the founding of America looked to groups that were not the beneficiaries, we recently went into Iraq expecting, stupidly, that we would be greated as liberators precisely because the people making the decisions did not think it was important to think about how the invasion would look to other groups.

Far from being a feel good measure to actual see what the world looks like from different perspectives, it is an exercise that could have saved the lives of 1000's of Americans as well as saving the country a trillion dollars.

Put in the perspective of reality, these programs seem to be quite cheap for what they do.

Lon
We WERE seen as Liberators in Iraq! Did you not watch or listen to what was happening...the fall of Sadaam's statue? People were overwhelmed with gratitude and were talking about how much they appreciated President Bush. Because of an insurgency that started later didn't negate the fact we were liberators. Of course, the opposition did see it that way and apparently you side with them.

Acting White
In our local metro school system they asked students, who had obvious talent, why they didn't study and apply themselves. 60% of them said they did not want to be accused of "acting white." Is this also taught in social justice as it seems like the whole idea is to demonize whites and further racial turmoil and hatred. The whole idea is overtly runious to those kids and society as a whole. OF course, that's what anarchists and unhinged freaks like Ayers want. The foolish teachers embrace this idioticty and seem to be blinded by the destruction and unintended consequences. Ayers, who grew up a child of "white privilege" seems to suffer from self-loathing and is mentally unbalanced.

HOW do they ever expect racial harmony when they are teaching minorities that whites are evil? If Obama is elected, those suffering from "white guilt" will have considered their "penance" paid and will begin to tire of constant demonization and accusations of racism. As far as they are concerned, racism has ended. It has just begun, but with the shoe on the other foot!

The real world

Homeschooling IS the real world. We read real History and do real math, and real formal logic, etc. Our children have far more interactions with people of different ages and generations than the institutionalized children isolated in an artificial structure that puts them with their age mates all day K-12.

Our children also learn how to function in a FAMILY-the foundation of society and have a clue how to raise children because they watched first hand as their mothers did it all day while running a household and teaching values, academics, and life skills.

85% of those who were homeschooled take on teaching jobs-with their own children. Colleges and the military accept homeschoolers, and the majority become entrepreneurs. Is that not "real world" enough for you?

Homeschooling isn't just about academics, it's about restoring the family and Western society.

Question authority????
Want your kid killed?? Teach them to question authority. I know of an example of a kid about to be hit by a car and his Dad yelled, "Get OUT of the road." The kid, always wanting to know "WHY", turned to ask the question as he was hit. That's an extreme example, but questioning authority for "authority's" sake is the ingredient in developing a rebellious and anti-social person.

Susan Rosenburg, who was pardoned by Clinton from a 58 year sentence, (she was one of Ayer's bombers) was promptly offered a job at Hamiliton College, even though she only had a course in "writing" by correspondence. The educational system has descended into the depths of depravity so much they admire killers.

It's no wonder blacks find themselves in such a predictament when you got all these white "intellectual" midgets teaching them to hate people and telling them they are failures and victims because of something that happened way back in history.

Everything else has failed, except the one they haven't tried....hard work, self-fulfillment and accomplishment and pride in taking care of one's self and family and STOP blaming somebody else for your problems.

Let the hippies have gov't dependents
and bread and circuses. I'd be up to join others as fed up as I am and find a corner of the US and secede from this parasite fest. I'm hardworking and handy , as is my wife. We'd do it, and know many others who are in the trades working 12-15 hour days and paying- at this point- 44% of our incomes to state and federal gov't, while watching our welfare state expand at an alarming rate. We've had enough.

AZ mom
The home schoolers we know in our area (home schooled through grade 8) graduated HS early and were admitted to some pretty good places. (One entered MIT at 16).

We raised 4 kids who did well in the public system, but we have a well educated and conservative community (although they did get the revisionist history bit on Columbus.)

I wanted to home school them, at least for math and science, but Michigan law didn't allow that option.

Good luck with your efforts. Your enthusiasm alone will aid in your success.

Obama supporters? I am now...
scratching my left cheek with my middle finger and aiming right at you...

Not because I am an arrogant PRIG like Obama is, who cleverly gave both Hillary and McCain the "finger" (like a 6th grader might do)

but because ... you DESERVE it...

Soliton-The Parental Factor
Homeschooling is finally legal in all 50 states, and I'm sorry you were unable to do so if that's what you wanted to do.

Most of the HS kids here graduate early too.

I think parental motivation is a HUGE factor regardless of educational environment in general. But that's really the root of my arguments. Parents recognizing it is THEIR responsibility (NOT THE GOVERNMENT'S) to see that their children are well educated and are willing to do what it takes (including footing the bill by hiring it done or doing it themselves)will have successful children.

It is the children with parents who are not motivated at all ends of the socioeconomic and ideological spectrum that are at the most vulnerable.

I think if a parent is not poor the parent should take full responsibility (including financial) to see their children educated. I acknowledge that there will probably always be a place for public funding of education for the poor.

well it is education..
"he encourages his students to walk in the shoes "

Which would be a device any good Jesuit would use,

"A soul is not properly formed by the mere accumulation of information. The methodology of Jesuit education was to form a man to train him to think. One of our biggest challenges is to train a young man to think, to analyze. "

Real education is devoted teaching one to to think using logic, not training to one to rationalize a previously chosen position.

Amazing how Catholicism and Protestant positions have reversed since the time of Gustavus Adolphus; once protestants were the rationalists, now they insist that a book of folklore is the inerrant word of -od.
