Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Pompous political windbags have a distinct odor, speaking of which, reminds me of a story that you have likely heard from Uncle Dan or Grandpa Gus. There are families that avoid bathroom humor at all costs; however, if you sprouted from one of those, it is unlikely that you are reading a column that has "cut the cheese" in its title. If you have never heard, "cut the cheese" used to describe something that does not compliment the bouquet of a fine wine; then brace yourself. You are about to be utterly violated.

A minister was on his way home from the church picnic. He had gorged himself on Martha Bergstrom's pork-n-bean casserole. For some reason, he could not get enough of it, and old Martha Bergstrom could not have been more delighted.

While turning the corner at Laramie Avenue, his car began to sputter, and he realized instantly that he had forgotten to stop at the filling station. He pulled over in front of a little white house. Spring flowers were growing everywhere, and a perfectly manicured lawn set the entire scene ablaze with color.

He rang the doorbell, and asked the woman who answered if he could use her telephone. She recognized the minister and graciously invited him in. He called his son, and arranged for him to bring a can of gas. The woman invited him to sit in the living room while he waited.

As he took a seat, she reappeared, rolling an old man in a wheelchair. She parked him across the room and excused herself as the old man fixed a suspicious gaze on the intruder. A beautiful golden retriever trotted into the room, sniffed him a bit, and then sat down next to the minister's chair.

He was about to compliment the old man on his wonderful landscape, when suddenly he felt an urgent rumbling. Obviously, Martha Bergstrom's pork-n-been casserole was at work, and it came on with such a ferocity that a bit of gas slipped out before he could gain control.

There was no sound, but a foul odor was soon evident. The old man in the wheelchair looked at the dog and sternly said, "Sammy."

The minister gratefully realized that the old man thought the dog was to blame. By now, the casserole was really churning, and the pressure was too much to bear. He decided to take advantage of the dog and relieve a little more pressure.

The old man called the dog's name again, but this time louder.

By now, the minister was really struggling. The pressure was so great and painful, that tears began to come to his eyes. He simply had no choice; relieve the agony, or he would surely rupture something internally. He was startled at how much gas escaped, but again, he was grateful that the dog was there to deflect the embarrassment.

He was nearly ready to let go, one more time, when the old man leaned forward in his wheelchair, this time yelling urgently at the dog… "SAMMY… Git over here right now before he poops on you!"

Yeah, I know that Grandpa Gus's version utilized more colorful language; nevertheless, there is a surprising bit of wisdom in this water-closet tale. Perhaps it is little more than a vulgarized version of the "King has no clothes" story.

The bottom line, as it relates to our esteemed windbags in Washington, is that more and more of us are watching. Our ability to sniff out the odorous stench of self-delusional finger pointing and deflection, which is continuously oozing from the House and Senate, is causing us to lose respect for those institutions. There is an awful lot of talk about the President's dwindling approval numbers, even from those who are themselves regarded with disdain by the public.

They stomp and holler about irresponsible pork, because they believe it is what fiscal conservatives want to hear. However, even as they speak, they know that if they do not bring home a few pounds of the bacon for their own constituencies, their connection to the beltway power grid will soon be disconnected.

Many of us believe that change is critical in Washington politics. We cannot imagine how certain states re-elect the same scoundrels time after time after time. If we honestly face reality, the problem with Washington politics is not what so-and-so is or is not doing about it; rather, it is what each one of us is not doing about it.

We have all failed this country, because we have allowed the phenomenon of the career politician to thrive. The office of Congressman and Senator was to be a position of duty, carried out by honorable citizens for a brief time. Then that citizen was to return home and live under the consequences of his decisions in office.

This is something that we can fix, and I implore my fellow citizens to recognize the odor for what it is. It is not the dog; rather, it is from the creatures of the beltway, who have entrenched themselves there. They have welded themselves onto the political power grid, and the festering stench is far more offensive than any byproduct of Martha Bergstrom's pork-n-bean casserole.

The right choice
As I continue to get older, I find myself believing my parents statement that the right path is often the difficult path. It is generally more difficult to do the right thing than it is to simply go along with the crowd, be agreeable, don't dissent, don't voice a reasoned opinion, etc.

I agree with Phil Harris in that I can't think of more than a couple elected officials who are willing to make the right/difficult choice. Unfortunately, none on the list represent me or my district. If we did have elected officials that had a spine (or, in the vein of this article, "have a pair"), we wouldn't have half of the problems we have today.

The comment I have heard from those politicians I have spoken with, is that if they don't agree with x they won't get y. Furthermore, they complain that if they don't "work with the others" they aren't effective and if they aren't effective, they won't get re-elected.

The premise of this position is that they are better than the alternative because they sell out their constituents only part of the time. This is acceptable? I don't want my wife to be faithful "part of the time". I don't want my kids to be good students "part of the time". I don't want my employees to do their job "part of the time". Do you? Even though a vote for a third party candidate may be "a wasted vote" according to most party hacks, if we continue to vote for the people who make the hard choices, eventually we will get what we need.

Government limits, not term limits
A reading of the Federalist Papers will confirm the cure for all the career politicians and their lobbyist enablers.

The current state of affairs was not unforeseen by the founders. In fact, it was predicted as the inevitable outcome of a government not confined to it's rightful purposes.

The mechanism employed by the Congress to expand and manipulate the pig trough is, surprise... THE TAX CODE! This is the source of all evil. It permits legislators to play favorites, pick winners, generate bribes, oops! I mean "campaign contributions", interfere with lawful commerce between citizens, incarcerate those who refuse to contribute, scare the crap out of the innocent every April 15th, and a legion of other ills. STOP THE MADNESS!!! Put democracy back in the box designed by the founders, to wit, the Constitution of the United States, and the inevitable ills and temptations manifested in Congress will quickly dissipate. Of course, getting there will be no picnic, but let's make a start of it, shall we? I read somewhere that Jefferson deliberately located Congress in a malarial swamp to limit their zeal for legislation. The quote is something like, "When the legislature sits, no man's liberty is safe."

Elect a Republican president who will place Janis Rogers Brown on the supreme court and pray for a vacancy!

Ever notice...
when Democrats are pushing their agenda that it's always, "What the American people want." or the "American people have spoken.."? Even when they were in the minority, they always spoke as if they had the only legitimate claim of what society needed. The claim of knowing what everyone wants is liberal code for what they think everyone 'needs'. They know what our needs are because they can feel what our needs are. What a crock!

On another issue; when are we going to require voters to pass a written or oral exam on the basic role of our government before we allow them to vote? People should have to be in possession of a license to be able to cast a vote. How important is it that people have a license to be able to drive vehicles? Don't you think that it is even more important that people who vote have at least the basic knowledge of how our government works before they are allowed to cast votes based on ignorance? We wouldn't let drivers on our highways who haven't demonstrated the basic skills of driving and a basic knowledge of the rules of the road, why should we let any knothead vote when the outcome is so important to all of us?

Pass the Crackers!
I agree with the poster complaining about the moderately funny joke as lengthy intro. It was rather long-winded. 'Reminded me of speeches by the likes of Ted the Swimmer Kennedy and Bobby the K Byrd. I could do without those.

A self-promo for a blog can be annoying, I know. But I'd rather that than a left-wing rant or hate-filled diatribe by a Liberal. Those are the ones which should be banned and sent back to the Democrat caucus. Consider more tolerance.

I've seen the rise of modern Democrat behavior for many years, and I've decried its continuing manifestations and influence in our daily lives. There've been: leaving a girl in an overturned car to drown; dancing in fountains with 'dates'; taking bribes; putting 'gifts' in the freezer; political nepotism; paying bribes---notably from the lower desk drawer; the "Great Society's" egregious errors [I'm not counting the sometime good actions]; a US Senator apologizing to the USSR for the 'cowboy' President being elected; 'don't worry lady, having three generations and thirty people on welfare is sad, but it's not your fault. And you don't have to declare your son's drug money as income either' We need to raise taxes to help you; "I'm pleased as punch!"---though I don't what you're talking about; the arrogant Ku Klux Klan remnant is safely in the Senate; waitress 'sandwiches' with the booze brothers; the phony best sellers; the murder faction---with many examples, including the 'right to choose' abortion or else; 'I'm a war hero! Never mind what the witnesses say!'; union of the left with the left for the betterment of the bosses; 'Pardon them all! I don't care who they are!'; "I didn't have sex with that woman"; Bomb the hell out of that aspirin factory, I tell you!' 'where did these [time records] come from? Imagine, right on my dining room table'.

Remember, it was the Democrats who sought to ensure Slavery and the Republicans against it. The segregation and riots in the deep South were due to Democrat administrations and policies.

So, the stench continues. The slight aroma from the Republicans, while a bit annoying, simply doesn't compare with the stench from the Left. And it's too bad so few people understand this. [Okay, I know I knocked a lot of Liberals. I can take it.]

Hey... hang in there Joe.

You know how they way the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence?

Sometimes, if you step back and take a look from another angle, you realize that it's all just crab grass anyway. We can simply be thankful that we aren't standing in a yard full of poison ivy and rattle snakes, and be content to pull an occassional sand burr out of our socks.

.

Yellow guy
Hey guy thanks for picking me up. I kinda fell over my own touch of regret and ire at all the white flaggers out there. thanks again.

"Giuliani Reaffirms Democratic Creds"
That about sums it up. Rudy is a great candidate, for the Democratic Party. We, on the other hand, are looking for a conservative Republican.

Steve
I hope I provided enough details for you on why Giuliani is a socialist pig.

What am I doing? I'm doing everything I can to support the only true conservative in the race, Dr. Ron Paul.

Cheers.

Steve

"HOUSTON, May 11 – Rudolph W. Giuliani directly challenged Republican Party orthodoxy on Friday, asserting that his support for abortion rights, gun control and gay rights should not disqualify him from winning the party’s presidential nomination and that Republicans need to be tolerant of dissenting views on those issues if they want to hold the White House." -- NY Times, May 11, 2007

They left out his PRO-OPEN BORDERS and PRO-AMNESTY stances.

You support this BIG government socialist piece of trash???

Your mistake Joe?
Are you kidding me? Do you honestly believe that we would be better under King Algorbechev? Regardless of what you thing of President Bush, he has accomplished far more than he is given credit... at least, the country is in far better shape than defeatist democrats, liberals, and single issue 3rd partiers are capable of acknowledging. Lowest unemployment numbers continue, the markets continue to thrive, home ownership is at an all time high, especially among minorities.

Disagreement with the President is fine, but have the good sense to discuss it in context. Even if I thought invading Iraq was a bad idea, pigs will be driving 18 wheelers before I can imagine a world that would be good under Gore or Kerry.

Gag me with an absentee ballot, please!

.

Blame the other guy?
I don't believe Bush got elected. If you go by all the posts lately onTh columns, hardlyanyone voted for him. I'm hearing a lot of blame the other guy, but not much of I voted for him but I'm not satisfied with what he's doing. Darn, how did the man get elected? I admit I voted for him twice. That doesn't mean I'm now satisfied with him. I'm man enough to admit my mistake, but all you who did alsodon't get down on me when you did the same thing.

Hot Air Brigade
My general comment on comments: One commenter recently said that I was wrong to support Giuliani (the only Republican who can win) because he was a "socialist." Frankly, someone who calls a lifelong Republican and an American hero a socialist is beyond assistance. Such a person has a right to express himself, but nothing he says will be of any value. Merely reciting right-wing slogans to one's fellow conservatives accomplishes zero. Blowing hot air is not a political action. If you have a problem with Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi or Rudy Giuliani or Newt Gingrich, say what it is -- and what you and others intend to do about it. If you plan to do nothing but write comments, then realize your total futility as a human being. Complaints alone are not enough. Will you contribute money to campaigns? Will you stuff envelopes? Or knock on doors? Or make calls? If not, you might be a conservative, but you're more part of the problem than the solution.

May your grandson be safe and blessed. Tell him we in this house will pray for his safety.

Kraut - your post of 1:24 PM

I share your frustrations.

Here are my observations. The political landscape has become extremely polarized. I go to the booth on election day. My "guy" has been a jerk and is flip-flopping all over the place.

Shall I vote for the other guy? What a minute. He is on the side of more issues I disagree with
than my guy.

A Republican doesn't want to vote in a Democrat and the same is true for the Democrat.

So, it isn't the November election that is the important one. It is the primary election where we pick the standard bearer for one's party. I think that is where the battle should be fought: getting the best person in at the primary and then, fighting like mad for him when November rolls around.

I think the voter really missed the boat by allowing the State legislatures have the primary elections as early as they do. France has a long primary campaign, then votes and the new president takes office in a matter of weeks. California will have a primary early next year and we sit around and wait many months later to vote in the national election. By then, I forgot who I woted for in the primary, but I am expected to lockstep into the "party" nominee.

The vote that counts for me is the primary vote for the person of my choice. Come November, unless it is my guy, I may or may not vote the party line.

Cut The Cheese THREAD
Bloggers ALL; Please excusa moi if this is improper. I consider this a personal blog to you all.

I have signed-on with this outfit because I felt everyone, every blogger in this thread, are CONCERNED about our country (except steve) and want to do something about the continuous rot.

We ALL, I feel, have read, "the pen is mightier than the sword". There are millions of pens, however, being used as swords like the ignorant rot from steve.

I will not pen a screed here. I merely want to mention the Morman campaigning for the job of leading and arresting our country from the moronic people who have been feeding at the trough and destroying our country since 1776.

Strange how close these two words, Mormon and moron are so close in the dictionary but as far apart as the Poles.

Just have a read on the Morman. That's all I ask.

Finally, I am not a Mormon, Republican, Democrat, nor an Independent or a Libertarian.

I am simply one of a very long line of Patriots who fought for this country during the American Revolution.

Semper Fi, Levi

P.S. MY grandson will be leaving for Parris, Island in 30 days and will become a United States Marine who will continue the fight for our country.

Close but no cigar
Cuttin’ the cheese and blaming the dog? Phil, most politicians are proudly rippin’ the big ones (literally and figuratively) and proud to say they could and did. They set themselves up as the pros. Their philosophy is apparently "the more you toot the better you feel" with the added bonus so does everyone else who gets a whiff and there from a methane high. Kinda like glue sniffing except with the aromatic flavors of rotten eggs and cat crap. They don't even try to hide it, convinced the stench is a highly coveted and marketable commodity. When someone rightfully responds "you stink," many politicians, especially the ones from the left, are stunned and offended. They'll tell you “you’re nuts,” then having their delusional followers and media horrors 'run you out of town on a rail.'

Handy
I agree with your note on spammers, especially Steve, except that I really don't like it when commenters cut and paste very long comments. I prefer that they have a blog to refer us to. I like to zip through comments if I can but sometimes bumper stickers won't do and most of the long comments are usually ad hominems.

To Handy
Voting with your feet used to be the way of the pioneer when we still had a frontier. Alas, the last country with any hope was Australia and they have now gone the way of the libtard. They have even started confiscating the guns.

Until space travel is perfected, voting with your feet is no loner an option.

To eastlake joe
Some of their stuff is Ok, particularly if it doesn't get into the current political arena. I have investigated the stuff they have that I am an expert on and not found anything bad.

But then again, I have looked at some things and found them eat up with liberalist agenda. You have to look at the main article and the comments, then use that to go to other sites for confirmation.

The stuff that I was referencing in Wiki I had seen in books previously.

Wikipedia
Not to hone in on your posts but I have to tell you I don't hold much stock in wikipedia. The first time I used it was to see what they had on the med-vol program in the servive at Edgewood Arsenal Maryland. I know first hand part of what they have posted is BS. So I wouldn't put too much stock in what they say.

To Talent Scout
Yes they disagreed over whether to support England or to be neutral but I think their differences were much deeper than just foreign policy. Adams was from a commercial interest sea power area where Jefferson was from a Southern agricultural area. Jeffereson wanted a strong central government with weak States and Jefferson wanted strong states and a weak central goverment. Jefferson though that in order to maintain the country free that power should lie with the "citizen-farmer".

He was probably right. The country ultimately went the way of Adams and look where we are now.

Mountain Rose
I want to profoundly thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping me prove something I have been saying all along. The hollywood types like your governor and others have an ajenda that doesn't quite fit reality. The only exception I will make to this is The late Ronald Reagan. I won't go on ,because to mention any of the others after him would be an insult to his memory.

I know I am quoting Wikipedia here for part of this and mostly memory for the rest, but bear with me as I have seen the same writings in a lot of other places and Wiki is an easy to get to site on the net.

First off, Adams was a member of the Federalist Party. This party was dedicated to a strong central government, as apposed to the weak central government “nation of farmers” that Jefferson preferred.
------------------------------------------------

I understand about wikipedia, no problem in using it at times such as this.

Appreciate your thoughts.

I have read the case about 4 times and seem to learn something new each time I read it.

I do know Adams was for strong central government but I had understood his problem with Jefferson was over the War between England and France, both wanting Americans business.

Love to talk about this history though as there is much to learn.

Couldn't agree more. One way or another, it is going to happen. You know, it's rather ironic. Folks can debate for hours about the past history of our country. You know, who did what and when. But what does that accomplish when the present threats are either ignored denied.

And the fact that the MSM never gives us the truth, only a politically biased account in an effort to sway public opinion. What are we to do? For all we know the forest fires raging all over the country could be a part of terrorist cell plans.

Look how the Liberal lawyers are already jumping to the defense of the Fort Dix Six! Claiming that our undercover agents coerced and forced them into a plan to attack American soldiers.

Term limits.
...Lets see:We need all the politicians in Washington to vote to limit themselves to office. Then we need the Supreme Court to approve of the limits. If they say it is unconstitutional,we simply get the congress to pass an amendment to the constitution by 2/3rds of the House and 2/3rds of the Senate. Then it goes to the States where 3/4ths of the politicians in their legislatures have to approve term limits.Piece of cake.

Good luck.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federalist_Party_%28United_States%29

Addams was all for the strong central government. As for Marbury v Madison I read an interesting book on it about a year ago. In today’s political parlance it would have been labeled as a setup of Jefferson and a scam. It was done much like Bill Clinton changing the permissible levels of Arsenic in drinking water just before he left office. He changed it to a value that no municipal water agency could deal with because there was no equipment to monitor it. He knew Bush would have to reverse the decision and thus provide the Dems with a “bragging point” to beat on Bush with.

Anyway, the story goes like this. After the election, Adams appointed Marshall to the Supreme Court just before his term was up and rushed his appointment through the Federalist dominated Senate along with the Judiciary Act of 1801 which created a bunch of new courts. Literally on the night of his departure Adams and Marshall wrote out appointments to different positions all over the government. One of these was the infamous appointment of Marbury to be justice of the peace for the District of Columbia. It was Marshall’s responsibility to deliver the appointment to Marbury as he was then the Secretary of State. He failed to deliver it (and the book I read and others have said this was intentional).

After that night of signing appointments, Adams left office and Marshall went on to his position as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Meanwhile Marbury has not got his appointment and he demands that it be delivered by the now Secretary of State James Madison. Well, Jefferson is noticeably upset that Adams has made all of these late night and last minute appointments to positions that they expected to fill so he orders them to not be delivered. Marbury files a writ of mandamus directly to the Supreme Court demanding his appointment.

At this point Marshall issues his great travesty and says the following:

The writ of mandamus was based on the Judicial Act of 1789 which was in conflict with the constitution and therefore was null and void. Based on this, the writ of mandamus was not legal. This is what established the authority of the Supreme Court to be the final arbiter of a law’s constitutionality.

It is NOT based on the Constitution which does not mention this authority at all. In fact, John C. Calhoun had a better case for State Nullification than Marshall had for Judicial Review.

So, as you can see from that long story, Adams and Marshall set the whole thing up and then conveniently did not deliver so they could have a “case”.

Marbury never did get his appointment.

Apathy
Goshawk has a great point... many of us know things are broken and need fixed. We read this and other columns and post our opinions. But the truth is, we are apathetic and for good reason.

We know that we are "political junkies", but the vast majority of our fellow citizens are not. And it is very hard to get this "silent majority" worked up on the issues because they are a) even more apathetic than us that they have a real voice that can make a difference, b) they see little distinction between the two major parties, and c) by and large, personally, life isn't too bad for them -- why rock the boat?

I like to occasionally listen to Rush Limbaugh, not because I always agree with his positions, but because he has an uncanny ability to predict the future. He was one of the first to predict the government and special interest attacks on things such as SUVs, "big tobacco", AGW, etc.

We junkies are looking at the past & present -- and feel we can see the future and don't much like what we see. And we know the path we are heading down is going to lead to really big constitutional crises, but fear it will be too late to act if we can't wake up the silent majority.

And that task seems daunting, thus our apathy.

I don't have the answers. I do think across the board term limits would help, including the courts, and I would be in favor of repealing the amendment that calls for senators to be elected by popular vote.

We do need to end the era of career polticians.

Everybody's but ours
There is an old saying about how voters believe that everybody in Washington is a crook, except the representatives they voted for. That's why the same sludge keeps getting re-elected.

We can understand why places like San Francisco or parts of New York vote the way they do.

Most of the dolts in those areas will fight you if you call them socialists or any other term that describes the way their representatives vote in congres but they still vote for them and defend them.

I can only come up with a few reasons for this. They are uninformed. They get their information from the left leaning MSM. They are following a family tradition that goes back several generations.

Goshawk
There won't be any invading army. The next war will be with the terrorists who are already here in our country just waiting for the word from OBL or someone like him to start the suicide bombings and terrorist attacks in all our cities. We already have the "cancer tumors" in our "body" and the "cancer" will "spread" when the order is given. While not all Muslims want to kill us, it doesn't take very many to wreak havoc on our country. We are continually being probed and attacked by Muslim terrorist wanna-bes as it is. These are the ignorant ones who aren't willing to wait for the order to attack. If the Chinese People's Republic could send a sleeper agent-spy to the US thirty years ago, what have the Islamic countries been able to do during that same time

John Adams
Vic writes:

To drivebyposting
John Adams is hardly a good example of someone believing in good limited government. He was one of the original proponents of big Washington government and he is the one who appointed John Marshall and then colluded with him to create the infamous Marburry v Madison which gave us the Supremes telling us how to run the country

-----------------------------------------------

Hey Vic, cause we both have interest in early history it would seem, I would like to comment about your statement.

I am not aware of any expansion of government under Adams.
Care to elaborate?

Also I find this statement to be totally inaccurate.

quote:

"he is the one who appointed John Marshall and then colluded with him to create the infamous Marburry v Madison which gave us the Supremes telling us how to run the country"

What has actually happened is the socialists on the bench have lied about what Marshall done and what he did not do.

Marshall went by written Law he Cites in that case, the US Constitution.

How does that case hand over control of the uSA to the USSC?

It doesn't, they just lie and abuse the law is all.

Renee is correct!
Those of us who have been reading and posting on Townhall for a long time. Have heard these same arguments over and over, but nothing is ever done. We all seam to know what 'should be' and 'could be' but we never do anything that carries any impact to change the situation. The self-serving, corrupt politicians just keep right on stealing our money as if we don't exist.

Sure, they'll tell the dumbed-down public any lies necessary to get re-elected. Once done, FORGET YOU!

Months from now and perhaps years. We'll still be hearing and reading the same complaints and arguments posted today.

I hate to say it but I think the only thing that will wake up the American people is a Third World War right here on our own soil, with invading armies in our streets.

Shaggy Dogs and Foul Cheese
Talk about a shaggy dog story! So much for the cheese sandwich I was planning for lunch. If you like humor, then you're going to love my daily column (click on name above). I do jokes (among other things) about political figures. I have a current one about the Revvvvvverrrendddd Al. It goes this way: Al Sharpton calling someone racist is like the pot calling the kettle African-American. So, y'all come visit. No cheese-cutting allowed.

steve

Sorry; too many
typos in that last post to correct them all.

To Liberty
As I see it, the Republican Party has five wings; 1) The old time Rockafeller Republicans who believe in big buiusiness and low taxes, 2) the religious wing that believes in social conservatism, 3) the Neocons who are ex-democrats who believe in a tough foreign policy and are socially and monetarily liberal, the RINOs who vote with the Republicans sometimes but more often than not vote with the Dems, and finally 4) the liberatarian wing who are the last of the Goldwater small government Republicans.

I am not a member of the Republican Party but I have voted for the Republicans every year since I got out of the Navy. If I was to consider myself a republican it would be part of the liberatrian wing.

In 08, if any of the current so-called top three are nominated I will probably vote for a 3rd party candidate. I will no longer hold my nose and vote for just any type of Republican because they are not as bad as who ever the Dem candidate is. I consider ALL of the top three candidates to be liberals except McShame. He doesn't fit in any category. Sometimes I think he is just onery-crazy.

And BTW, all three top candidates support AGW which is a major hit against them.

I smell it...
...and it stinks! Another eye opening article. Always speaking the truth. Thanks Phil.

smelly congresspeople
the idea of term limits for congress is a good one; I agree with the idea that career pols are bad for our country. However, in DC, and probably in other levels of govt, the problem also needs to address career congressional staffers -- not a single one of them elected by anyone -- who attach themselves like parasites to newly elected congressmen and who in many ways dictate what issues and legislation etc are heard and voted on. They too pose a real danger.

This is why our Founders also warned us about the 2-party system. If the elite at the top of the Party becomes corrupt, then the whole is corrupt. These are the people who set the agenda for the Parties.

You know as well as I do that there have been multiple factions in the Republican Party, who believe in almost the exact opposite things. We have the BIG government statists on one hand and proponents of limited government/individual liberty, on the other. They bear little to no resemblance.

So, I don't see what it would serve us, as patriotic Americans, to just jump in lockstep with whomever the Republican Party elite doles out to us. To me, it makes much more sense to stop bearing allegiance to a certain political party, regardless of which one it is, and start being allegiant to our Constitution and our country.

Best Gov't Money Can Buy
This grand experiment of government of the people, by the people, for the people is being usurped by government of the corporations, by the corporations, for the corporations.
The primary responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect the territorial integrity and people of this country. They have completely abdicated this responsibility. Both parties have been complicit in this. We are being told it is not possible to control our borders, enforce our laws, and thereby control our destiny as a nation. Hogwash. We are being sold out by corporations intent on importing workers for jobs that can't be exported with the taxpayers paying the true costs, financial and human. If we act like sheep and don't stop the inundation across our borders, we will lose our country without a bleat.

Locke
I agree. The House holds the purse strings, but it is not within their power to set timelines.

To drivebyposting
John Adams is hardly a good example of someone believing in good limited government. He was one of the original proponents of big Washington government and he is the one who appointed John Marshall and then colluded with him to create the infamous Marburry v Madison which gave us the Supremes telling us how to run the country.

Phil Harris column
The problem is tht the voters keep voting the same politicians into office over and over again. Why not term limits. These politicians care only about their power and gaining more power and not what is good for the country. They care about staying office and giving out pork to keep them there. Big problem with the Republican party is that they will not stick together unlike the Democrates who are in lock step. And then we have the ignorant, uninformed public the majority of whom do not even know who the Vice-President of the United States is. We can thank our public schools for the dumbing down of America.

John Adams
John Adams, always the skeptic, once said something to the effect of "I fear that moment when the voters suddenly realize they can vote themselves money."

Liberty
I agree with you that if the Federal government would actually follow the constitution, things would be better.

Our Founding Fathers knew what they were writing when they wrote the Constitution -- I guess now it just doesn't matter.

A perfect example of Congress being unconstitutional is passing the bill to get a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. troops in Iraq -- the president is Commander and Chief of the U.S. Military, Congress is not constitutionally allowed to take that position upon themselves.

No body (politician) has raised the hairs behind my head and given me goose bumps since John F Kennedy. Just a side bar...I was aboard ship (U.S. Marine) on 22Nov63 moving along the passageway to the mess hall when a squid announced, "hey did you hear? Kennedy has been asassinated!".

Yes, We Need Real Change!
And how!

Especially in these recent years, the government has grown faster than ever, and overspent like never before. What is necessary is to get government out of the way.

I have a new blog essay up, my third, that points this out from another angle. Government has no business in the area of religion and individual morality.

Please check it out at http://www.alicelillieandher.blogspot.com .

Not anything new
“For in reason, all government without the consent of the governed is the very definition of slavery.”
Jonathan Swift quotes (Irish Author and Satirist of prose, 1667-1745)

None of yours and my words matter to the present day "royal" politico's in DC.

They are all owned (except for a few perhaps) by merchants and bankers.

Barry Goldwater's words...

"I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution ... or have failed their purpose ... or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should be attacked for neglecting my constituents' 'interests,' I shall reply that I was informed that their main interest is liberty, and in that cause I am doing the very best I can."
- Barry Goldwater

Limited Constitutional Government
It seems to me that we could solve a lot of problems all at once if we held our public servants' feet to the fire on adhering to their oath of office of upholding the Constitution. The vast majority of the legislation they pass, is unconstitutional as all heck.

Furthermore, if our federal government was returned to the limited Constitutional government laid out in our founding document, they wouldn't be involved in the vast majority of areas where they are now. These powers were reserved to the states and to the people. i.e. much closer to We the People.

This is the easiest way to restrain people like Teddy Kennedy. Take away their power, by restraining them through Constitutional government.

Unless we as a people have decided to just discard the Constitution altogether, perhaps we should actually follow it. Right now, all it gets is lip service. Our public servants take an oath to preserve and protect it from all enemies foreign and domestic, but then proceed to break it every chance they get. THEY are the biggest domestic enemies to the Constitution and they prove this with their legislation.

Just like our Founding Fathers had great wisdom in constructing the 2nd amendment; they also had this same wisdom in outlining the duties and constraints on the federal government. They understood well the tendency of governments to abuse their power. It's too bad we have forgotten their warnings.

Mountain Rose
Is anyone trying to get them impeached?

A Foul Stench
Sadly, BOTH political parties, liberals and conservatives alike, put out the foul stench of politics. Why? They care more about the next election than they do about their country's well being. They care about wonderful values like ego, power and money instead of tackling the country's problems. Instead of working on rational legislation, they pass bills to create campaign issues. You could solve 70% of the global warming on this planet if you would eliminate the hot, foul air emanating from Washington's two political parties.

If you think politics sting in Washing-
ton, you should come out here to California.

In Los Angeles, our city officials just got done pitching elite police troops under the bus in favor of activist Left-o illegal aliens.

When the Mayor and the Chief of Police realized that they were taking a lot of heat from the normal citizens who happen to love our "First Responders," they suddenly held an awards banquets for other officers who saved some people's lives.

Gee, what interesting timing.

Then when Griffith Park burned, and Mayor Villariagosa (also known as Villa-La-Raza, or Villa-Reconquista) discovered how much positive press the Firemen were getting and decided to steal their limelight by holding press conference after press conference.

Of course, Mayor Villa-La-Raza never saw a television camera he didn't like.

Now Governator-turned-Lefielover Schwartzenegger has gotten into the act.

The Mayor to the Illegals and the Governor of the quick change act have teamed up to hogg the cameras and steal press from our brave firemen while kicking the police to the curb.

It is truly disgusting.

Gross incivility
One reason we have the Congress we do is the responses a friend of mine received to a letter posted in a local paper. My friend wrote that firing the AG's was a pres. prerogative, Clinton had done it, and the entire brouhaha was manufactured by Dem. Cong. committee. Online responses were 1) Bush is a moron, 2) Bush devised 911, 3) Cheney's daughter should be raped, 4) Bush was a draft dodger, 5) Reagan (spelled "regan") was the problem, and 6) Christie Whitman (by the way, no longer in office) should be impeached. There were a couple others about Corzine and Iraq, but if these completely inane messages are indicative of the Dem. voting pop. in Am., we should cheer the Islamonitwits as they blow up a few cities. The thoughts expressed were so bizarre, unrelated to the original letter, so hateful, and mostly not even relevant to this time period (for people who still think "regan" and Whitman are in office)that having any kind of rational political discourse is obviously now beyond this nation. The radicals of the '60s and their coarse rantings have polluted discourse to the point of irrationality on any subject.

"cut the cheese"; now there
is a phrase that I have not heard for a long time. Probably because society has become so course that one does not have to talk around the actual event anymore. Phil, why not "stepped on a frog"? Then you could work into the column the hope we have that conservatives will step on these RINOs in Washington in 08.

Cut The Cheese by Phile Harris
Phil, I've been readin' and writin' about the same stuff for a few months since I learned I could vent on those putrid scoundrels, w/o gonads, in Washington, D.C..

They have raped, pillaged, drained our treasury and spilled the blood of the warriors of our country while we watched...just like you say it is an odious stench. And it's like Pogo said, "we have met the enemy and he is us".

I don't know about you but, "as for me and my family..." we're voting for one man in this next election and that is MITT ROMNEY! Nobody else gets a vote!

That squid immediately became part of the bulkhead and melted to the deck while I continued my journey for chow looking for the next %@#hole to deck. Thanks for the vent, Phil. Yeah, I've been there with the beans bit. I gave you a 10...voted twice. Semper Fidelis, Levi, 1stSgt. of Marines.

LOWEST approval rating
The lowest approval rating ever for any congress hints that the citizens are catching on:

the problem is they do not have the courage to make the changes so the VOTERS and the VOTERS WHO refuse to take responsibility and NEVER VOTE
have themselves to blame:

PERFECT is impossible under present conditions unless you shut down Washington and start OVER IN NEBRASKA.

WE need a government HOUSE cleaning in every department as well. THE GS 10's and Government employees Union will NEVER be thrown out. THEY control our Government a Gs much as the elected officials.

EVERYONE is 100% PC and have every imaginable "RIGHT" without "RESPONSIBILITY"

ZERO talent and ZERO skills and ZERO true dedication to this once Great country.

1. overhaul every spec of our miserable education system from top to bottom
2. enforce every single law: PERIOD
3. Toss the Unions
4. DEMAND term limits for everyone in Washington that includes every single "CAREER" government employee:

We have
exactly the govt the voters ( and non-voters) want. Vote "throw the rascals out". Reagan had 2 years of cooperatin from a DEM congress because it was scared into responsiveness by the extraordinarily high percentage of congressmen who did not get re-elected. The only way the illegal alien mess will be dealt with is if the wussies now evading it are replaced.

Oh I think Harris has got it
Just flat out stop voting for these guys. Tell them why, in advance, just after they are elected. They don't know if you voted for them or not. Tell them they are "on notice".

You might not like the story told here but entrenched politicians are sucking the life out of America, and you personally.

Do you "own" a home, or ever wish to? Do you realize you will pay property taxes until you sell that home? Or die.

Unfortunately a $500,000 home in Orange County CA is considered modest. That is about 1250 sq.ft. with no basement, a tiny yard or patio and maybe a garage. Your property taxes for that are $550 per month. That is as much as a food budget for 4, without eating out, ever.

Yep! We need more government and more government spending.

I'm sure there was probably
a better way to make the point than a veeeery long and drawn-out version of a joke that's only moderately funnt at best, and never in good taste to tell except maybe on a fishing trip with the boys.

Not ready for prime time.

Interesting column Phil
However, in my opinion, as long as there are those voters who think only about what the government will do for them. Without any thought given to the health of our country. Nothing will change. It will only get worse!
