Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

In a major foreign policy speech to the Council on Foreign Relations today, former Senator John Edwards said this:

"The core of this presidency has been a political doctrine that George Bush calls the 'Global War on Terror.' He has used this doctrine like a sledgehammer to justify the worst abuses and biggest mistakes of his administration... The war on terror is a slogan designed only for politics, not a strategy to make America safe. It's a bumper sticker, not a plan. It has damaged our alliances and weakened our standing in the world... The 'war' metaphor has also failed because it exaggerates the role of only one instrument of American power—the military... we must move beyond the idea of a war on terror." Click here to go to Edwards's speech

That would be one way to look at it. There are others.

Another view goes something like this: The global war on terror is not a "political doctrine" advanced by the Bush Administration or a bumper sticker slogan. Rather, it refers to an epic struggle we are engaged in against Islamic jihadists. These jihadists -- years before George W. Bush became president and years before Operation Iraqi Freedom -- publicly announced, through their fatwas, that they were at war against us.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, terrorists struck against us by bombing Marine barracks, the World Trade Center, American embassies in Africa, and the U.S.S. Cole. And then, after years of lassitude and indifference, came a day of flames and ashes, of bent steel and fallen buildings, of wrecked planes and thousands and thousands of dead bodies, of grief that has not yet receded and memories of loved ones that will not pass.

In response to the attacks of September 11, 2001, the United States went on a war footing. In the words of President Bush:

"On September the 11th, enemies of freedom committed an act of war against our country. Americans have known wars -- but for the past 136 years, they have been wars on foreign soil, except for one Sunday in 1941. Americans have known the casualties of war -- but not at the center of a great city on a peaceful morning. Americans have known surprise attacks -- but never before on thousands of civilians. All of this was brought upon us in a single day -- and night fell on a different world, a world where freedom itself is under attack."

So the idea that the global war on terror arose from something other than an attack of deliberate and massive cruelty against the United States is fiction. And the notion that we have not witnessed success is self-evidently false. Consider only one fact: we have not experienced a single attack on the American homeland in more than a half-decade -- which is something hardly anyone would have predicted in the days immediately after 9/11. Such things don't happen by accident; they are the result of a persistent, relentless, focused, and successful effort to break up terrorist cells, to arrest jihadists, and to deliver massive blows against terrorist networks and hideouts and nations that harbor them.

It is quite clear in Senator Edwards's speech that he is deeply uncomfortable with the notion that we are at war and that we need to use the instruments of war to prevail. Of course the military alone is not sufficient to the task; that is why the United States has worked hard to gain unprecedented cooperation in the war on terror from countries such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

Traditional allies in Europe have helped in tracking and arresting terrorists and blocking their financing. We’re witnessing unprecedented cooperation in law enforcement, intelligence, and diplomacy. And more than 70 countries now have joined the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI), sharing intelligence information, tracking suspect international cargo, and conducting joint military exercises to stop all aspects of the proliferation trade and to deny terrorists, rogue states, and their supplier networks access to WMD-related materials and delivery systems.

For the Edwards thesis to have merit, he would have to rewrite most of the history of the past five-and-a-half years. He would have to erase virtually all of the day-to-day activity of the war on terror, which as a practical matter consists of unprecedented levels of cooperation and integrated planning across scores of countries, both long-time allies and new partners. But Senator Edwards seems quite willing to engage in that kind of revisionism.

At the same time, it is deeply unwise, and quite dangerous, to underplay the role of the military when facing an enemy that is ruthless, cunning, and merciless. To argue that we are engaged in a metaphorical war when our enemy is engaged in a real one is an invitation to disaster and defeat.

Islamic jihadists have shown, in their words and deeds, that they want to kill Americans and destroy secularism and pluralism in the Muslim world. They have embraced a culture of death -- and they intend to make us a part of it. And yet it appears that some in our nation, and others in the Western world, do not fully grasp the nature of the enemy and all that lies in the balance. They do not, deep in their bones, believe we are at war. And at too many opportunities along the way, they are taking steps that impede (even unknowingly) our efforts to wage and win the war against militant Islam.

Senator Edwards also says we need to "reengage the world with the full weight of our moral leadership." What Senator Edwards doesn't tell us is how his desire to precipitiously and immediately withdraw from Iraq, after having voted in favor of war with Iraq[1][1], would demonstrate "moral leadership." How would the genocide and rivers of blood that would follow an American retreat, to say nothing of granting an unprecedented victory to Islamic jihadists and betraying those who have stood with America and for liberty, advance the moral good?

Senator Edwards says a lot in his speech -- but one thing he fails to say is perhaps as revealing as anything else. In a speech of more than 5,200 words, he can barely bring himself to say a single critical thing about the terrorists that attacked our nation, killed thousands of our citizens, and who are waging war against us even now, in Iraq and across the globe. One might think that John Edwards could muster considerable moral outrage against al Qaeda and its deadly acts -- but one would be wrong.

It makes one wonder if Senator Edwards takes seriously the words and deeds of Osama bin Laden, Ayman al Zawahiri, the late Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and so many others? Does he understand that they, not America, are responsible for killing American soldiers and innocent Iraqis and attempting to turn Iraq into a terrorist base? Does he grasp the fact that they want to impose a caliphate that spans from Spain to Indonesia? Has he seen the videos that show innocent people having their heads sliced off by jihadists, with joyful shouts of "Allah Akbar" accompanying the slayings? You wouldn't know these things, at least based on Senator Edwards's Council on Foreign Relations address.

We are in a race with terrorists who have declared war on America. That race will have one of two outcomes: either we will defeat them, or they will kill many, many more of us. I'm grateful our commander-in-chief is committed to hunting down and destroying these jackals, who are at once savage, malignant, remorseless, and determined. We have prevailed against their kind before; we will do so again. But only because of leaders who understand the gravity of the threat and the stakes of the struggle.

The Problem is
The liberal media and politicians only saw the 9/11 attacks as an attack against the USA for a short time.

Then they started to see that George Bush's decisive actions against the Al Quaeda and the Taliban could hurt the democrats chances in future elections.

So, from their standpoint, they needed to do everything in their power to trivialize Bush's successes and impede his efforts wherever they could. Much in the same way that the "copper heads" tried to sabotage President Lincoln during our own civil war.

Future historians will hold these folks up to shame for their actions.

It's Bush's Fault!!!
That's all Edwards 'needs to know'. Facts don't get in the way of BDS.

All I can say, is God help this country if the likes of Edwards gets elected. With the help of the media's lies and distortion herding the sheep into the stupid ring, it may not be that unrealistic.

Need I say More
Will the real Edwards Stand Up. Oops no.. I Mean shut up.

:)

Edwards is a threat
Edwards can very easily win the demoncrat nominee. Most liberals won't vote for Hillary because she won't say she regrets voting for the war and she is being painted as a moderate. There is a large portion of liberals that will never vote for Obama because he's a brother OR because he's no a "real" brother. Edwards appeals to the far left nut jobs and doesn't have to deal with being the first female or black in the White House.

Edwards preaches class warfare better then anyone. He is very similar to Bill Clinton in his demenor and oratory. He is a politician that knows how to get votes and I see it very realistic for Edwards to be your next President.

There is little hope for the Republican party in the '08 election. If they put Giuliani, Romney, or McCain on the ticket they lose because too many conservatives will finally have been fed up enough that they will stay home. Tancredo and Hunter are the only ones that are a lock for getting the base out to vote. The people who vote for Giuliani or Romney because they think they can win a national election and will settle for them will end up killing the country. RomneyCare is no good and Giuliani says the only problem with the immigration bill is it doesn't require a tamper proof ID card for those that come forward, neither care about America only thir political ambitions.

Time to lock down the Dems on this
Edwards isn't exactly a backbencher in the Democrat party. Candidate or not...nominee or not...he's a powerful person within his party.

Do others in the Democrat leadership feel the same way? What about the rank and file?

Liberal trolls: State your positions!! I'm calling you out!

Conservatives say the "War on Terror" is a misnomer and should really be described as the "Global War by Militant Islam Against Western Civilization," or "War to Resist Militant Islam."

Edwards says that this is a pretend war by the Bush Administration against a non-enemy.

The strategic implication is that all fighting will cease as soon as we pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan. Then we'll go back to the peace we had before 9-12.

Hypocrite
This footnote is on the original article on RealClearPolitics:

{1}In his October 10, 2002 speech authorizing the use of force against Iraq, Senator Edwards said this:

"Saddam Hussein's regime represents a grave threat to America and our allies, including our vital ally, Israel. For more than two decades, Saddam Hussein has sought weapons of mass destruction through every available means. We know that he has chemical and biological weapons. He has already used them against his neighbors and his own people, and is trying to build more. We know that he is doing everything he can to build nuclear weapons, and we know that each day he gets closer to achieving that goal. Iraq has continued to seek nuclear weapons and develop its arsenal in defiance of the collective will of the international community, as expressed through the United Nations Security Council. It is violating the terms of the 1991 cease-fire that ended the Gulf war and as many as 16 Security Council resolutions, including 11 resolutions concerning Iraq's efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction. By ignoring these resolutions, Saddam Hussein is undermining the credibility of the United Nations, openly violating international law, and making a mockery of the very idea of collective action that is so important to the United States and its allies. We cannot allow Saddam Hussein to get nuclear weapons in violation of his own commitments, our commitments, and the world's commitments. This resolution will send a clear message to Iraq and the world: America is united in its determination to eliminate forever the threat of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction... Almost no one disagrees with these basic facts: that Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a menace; that he has weapons of mass destruction and that he is doing everything in his power to get nuclear weapons; that he has supported terrorists; that he is a grave threat to the region, to vital allies like Israel, and to the United States; and that he is thwarting the will of the international community and undermining the United Nations' credibility."

What will he tell us next? Could be anything.

National guard: key to our home security
The terrorists are not coming to the US; they are here in cells waiting to attack. There are likely many more Ft. Dix would-be terrorists.

If England has already identified 30 pre-terror cells how many are not known, and what does that suggest about we in the US also have?

Thankfully, and serendipitously, the National Guard was called to the Middle East and has been deeply involved in urban warfare and counter-terrorism. It will be needed to fight against terrorists in our country when they start their attacks as they have in Iraq. We also need to guard the 2nd Amendment rights most dearly as it is US citizens who will in some cases have to repel these terrorist from their own neighborhoods.

Seventh Degree
Did you realize that the federal government took control of the national guard from the state governors in John Warner's Defense Authorization act?

Edwards has it exactly right!
Finally, a politician says it like it is! The democrats have always felt this way. Their mistake was succumbing to the bullying Karl Rove and GWB gave them shortly before the Iraq invasion. Anytime anyone disagreed with GWB on ANYTHING, threats, false media leaks, etc. followed. Remember in the 2000 election, when anyone in the press corps asked GWB questions that were "too tough" on his positions, he threatened to deny that reporter's (and his or her employer's) access to his campaign.

There is one simple fact about this "war":

The Republican party NEEDS this "war" to maintain power. It's part of the ideological public relations battle in which only extreme far-right-wing views are considered valid. The vast majority of the population who are somewhere in the moderate spectrum see this as ridiculous and see the "war" as a waste of lives and resources.

Edwards is right
the "war on terror" is a bumper sticker - what "war on terror"?

It is this never ending amorphous "war" - be very afraid America - they are going to attack anytime - only repubs can keep you safe - nonsense

Bush's war on terror has made American drastically less safe - he is a moron - they are all morons - and then he gets out in front of the Coast Guard and stokes the flames of fear once again.

Why don't you people wake up - Iraq is not the "war on terror" - who the heck knows what Iraq is anymore other than a safe haven for terrorists created by Bush - do we really need an embassy the size of the Vatican in Iraq?

George Bush and the gang in the White House have trashed this great country - if you don't see it than you are likely beyond hope

John Edwards was right!
John Edwards was right!
You fear-mongering-limbaugh-heroing-delay-aplogists-bush-loving con-serve-additives are so embedded inside your own pathetic and disturbed view of how you're told the world is by your pee-brained negative leaders that of course you miss Edward's point. I am sincerely afraid of you and your kind and your philosophy for in this world that you creeps have destroyed, The War on Terror is about as real to you as hating Bill Clinton but to me and the majority of Americans is as real Paris Hilton's intelligence and just about as believable.

Ho Ho Ho-and I'm not saying Imus' 'ho'
to GoodonPaper(hah),Sean & Freddyhanks-- typical leftist looney liberal blather- when you say repubs need the war for 'control'--what control?
They have daily given more and more control over to the looniest-left bunch of America-haters ever to come down the pike. Disgusting the way Bush (I voted twice for him) has aligned himself with Teddy 'Let'er Swim' Kennedy, and TOP-ACE RINO McCain, and the others to allow more and more MILLIONS of ILLEGALS to come in and stay--take up residence, but NOT assimilate. Oh no, they will just continue to send their BILLIONS back to messico daily. Learn the language-what a joke!!! We have to spell out everything in THEIR language. Get a life--- how long do you think it will be before WE have to conduct ALL business in mexican, or spanish, or whatever.
When these millions get all their buds in here, it will mean a minimum of THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND PLUS per year- Good luck-- we will need it!!
America, as most of us have loved and revered it,
will go down the drain. Just let Teddy have his way and good ole John and others--all they want is VOTES, V O T E S !! people. Wake up.
I am all for LEGAL immigration-- it is the ingrates of ILLEGALS that galls!!!

elliea
now maybe you will agree that Bush is no more a conservative than Dennis Kucinich - he sold out your true party on immigration and he sold out this country in so many other ways - all to the benefit of the Texas oil mafia and the jesus freaks.

Just look at that poor pathetic Monica Goodling (who admitted Tim Griffin commited election fraud and Alberto may have tried to tamper with a witness) - she came from a bottom ranked law school (run by a Televangelist no less) and was in charge of all 93 US attorneys - it is unbelievable

I watched her testify and thought I was watching a saturday night live skit - what qualifies her to oversee some of the best lawyers in the country? She testifies that she was student body president in college - unreal

This is the problem with Bush - he installs incompetent morons in the government because they are loyal, not qualified, and the result has been disastrous for this country

And the problem is that you guys installed Bush in the White House, TWICE!

don't blame John
You can't blame John too much for not knowing that we are engaged in a global war on terror. As ya'll know, there are two Americas according to the Breck Girl and over in his America they don't allow facts to get in the way of Bush-bashing. Also, I've never been to the other America, but I hear you can get $400 haircuts and live in 30,000+ square foot mansions while being paid to study poverty, so I would love to visit sometime.

ex-CIA bin Laden Unit Chief .....

"Foreign policy is about protecting America," said author Michael Scheuer, who used to head the CIA's bin Laden unit. "Our foreign policy is doing the opposite." -- Michael Scheuer, ex-CIA bin Laden Unit Chief

http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSN2434274320070524?pageNumber=1

In an interview on May 18, Michael Scheuer defended Paul, stating: "I thought Mr. Paul captured it the other night exactly correctly. This war is dangerous to America because it’s based, not on gender equality, as Mr. Giuliani suggested, or any other kind of freedom, but simply because of what we do in the Islamic World – because ‘we’re over there,’ basically, as Mr. Paul said in the debate."

Sounds like Rudy needs to do some studying, instead of grandstanding with an appeal to emotion that was not backed by the facts.

Press conference - Ron Paul & M. Scheuer
In a press conference on May 24, 2007, Ron Paul and Scheuer held a press conference at the National Press Club in Washington DC about the causes that led up to 9/11, American foreign policy and its implications on terrorism, security and Iraq.[12] Paul and Scheuer explained why Rudy Giuliani is wrong on security and foreign policy and provided documentation about the unintended consequences of interventionism - known to many in the intelligence as blowback - and assigned Giuliani a reading list of foreign policy books, including Dying to Win, Blowback, Imperial Hubris and the 9/11 Commission Report.

Lynne
Whatsa matter? Truth hurt? LOL

Paul offers reading list to Giuliani

Do think Rudy will take Ron Paul up on his offer to educate himself on the Middle East?

MSNBC-WASHINGTON - Longshot Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, on Thursday, gave front-runner Rudy Giuliani a list of foreign-policy books to back up his contention that attacks by Islamic militants are fueled by the U.S. presence in the Middle East.

“I’m giving Mr. Giuliani a reading assignment,” the nine-term Texas congressman said as he stood behind a stack of books that included the report by the commission that examined the attacks on the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.

Giuliani was mayor of New York when Islamic militants slammed two commercial airliners into the World Trade Center, a role that has vaulted him to the front of the Republican presidential pack despite his liberal social positions.

“I don’t think he’s qualified to be president,” Paul said of Giuliani. “If he was to read the book and report back to me and say, ‘I’ve changed my mind,’ I would reconsider.”

one book on the list was “Imperial Hubris,” whose author appeared at the press conference to offer support for Paul.

“Foreign policy is about protecting America,” said author Michael Scheuer, who used to head the CIA’s bin Laden unit. “Our foreign policy is doing the opposite.”

What a pile
I didn't know they stacked shiite this high, John Edwards is Barbie "bright". He should be confined to the twilght zone of his two Americas.

Khobar Towers, USS Cole, American Embassies in Africa, The first WTC bombing, PAN AM 103, plus the Ahmadinajad himself about wiping Israel off the map, his world without Israel and America conference, The PLO's charter stating they are going to drive Israel into the sea. This animated dung heap thinks these are bumper sticker slogans.

In modern times there is a 20 year track record of these "bumper sticker slogans" proffered by Hamas, Hezbollah, Islamic Jihad, Al Qaeda, and the like. This brain-dead bozo (no offense to the clown) does not need to even be near the White House. I'm sure the terror organizations are praying to allah that Edwards get the nod and wins.
They could rip us a new one and he wouldn't believe it.

KC

Sometimes even liberals are right....
John Edwards is a typical bend-with-the-wind democratic politician. But he obviously hit a few sensitive nerves here. Of course, the GWOT is a bumper sticker slogan. Get real, neocon nitwits: Al-Qaeda and Islamic militants are not threats to America. At most, they can commit a few acts of terrorism. They cannot overthrow our government or force us to convert to Islam.

No one condones the acts of 9-11. But we do need to understand what motivated those acts. Putting our collective heads in the sand and pretending it's because "they hate our freedom" accomplishes nothing. Pretending that Israel is 100 percent virtuous, while Palestinians are just vile terrorists, is being voluntarily blind. Pretending that a ten-year bombing campaign against a disarmed, third world country, resulting in thousands of innocent civilian deaths, does not engender deep hatred, is foolish.

What should the US do about the Middle East? Nothing: it is none of our business. Let those who live in the Middle East figure it out. Ron Paul (a far better prospect for president than the two-faced John Edwards) has it exactly right.

Paolo
There is a 20 year track record of these acts. "No one condones 9/11" but we deserved it right? You sound just like Ron Paul, America deserved what it got. A 9/11 happens, "oh well" 2900 people dead, we sure got what we deserved.
Tell me what terrible things have we done to deserve 9/11, Khobar Towers, The Cole, Embassy bombing, Pan Am 103, and many others. What things did we do, excluding all that foreign aid money that we dole out.

I don't blindly support Israel, but what has it done to deserve the constant attacks? When Arafat ask for the moon in during the Clinton years and Clinton got Barak to stupidly agree to Arafat's demands and then Arafat turned him down. What is Israel's big crime, that they need to be driven into the sea, wiped off the map.

These are bumper sticker slogans to you,. but if it was your hind-parts getting ripped you'd sing a different tune.

KC

None so blind...
I could come up with some bumper sticker slogans for
Edwards and his klan, but I'd get kicked off this board if I posted them.

I feel sadness, though, reading over a few of these posts. Where in God's name have some of these people kept their heads?

Here is just a short list of pre-Bush attacks on America by islamofascist jihadists of one stripe or another.

* 1979-US Embassy captured by Iran and US hostages held for 444 days

* 1983-US Marine barracks in Beirut was blown up, 241 US servicemembers killed

* 1985-cruise ship Achille Lauro hijacked, 70-year-old disabled American passenger murdered and thrown overboard

* 1985-TWA flight 847 hijacked at Athens, US Navy diver murdered

* 1988-Pan Am Flight 103 bombed; death toll 270

* 1993-World Trade Center bombed; 6 dead, 1040 injured

* 1998-US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania bombed

* 2000-USS Cole bombed; 17 sailors killed

And this is just a short list and it's just acts provably caused by islamofascist jihadists.

How did George W. Bush cause any of these? (The last 3 happened during the administration of the left's "Maximum Leader" Slick Willie.)

The truth is, though, that Edwards, those who think like him, and their fellow travelers pose a tremendous threat to our national security. The primary difference is that these members of what I call the "Granola element"--the fruits, nuts and flakes of American society--is content to see America die the slow death of 1,000 slashes, while the suicidal jihadists are roaring to go with nuclear or chemical or biological attacks which, ironically, will kill off many of their American sympathizers and cheerleaders.

There is none so blind as he/she/it will not see.

One problem is
The Democrat Party, as well as their progressive/liberal backers, view the internal, ideological 'threat' (conservatives) as more dangerous and threatening than the external, security threat.

Deep down, Democrats seem to believe that if they can win the fight for political control of America, they won't have to fight for anything or any reason in the bigger world. Indeed, many seem to think that the whole world would love us and beat their AKs into plowshares if only the conservatives would excuse themselves from American politics.

Anyway, that's my view of the matter.

Liberty, Paolo
Get a clue, guys. India doesn't have a presence in the Middle East, but that hasn't prevented them from getting attacked by al-Qaida.

The Islamofascists are going after EVERYONE. Can't you see this? They are going after Hindus and Buddhists and third-world Christians and Russians and the British and the Spaniards and even other Muslims. They even go after leftists. Just ask Theo van Gogh, if you can find him.

And yes, Paolo, it's true that maybe al-Qaida doesn't actually pose a threat to our government or way of life. But when Muslims in Sweden announce that in thirty years they are taking over, I'm rather inclined to believe them, especially given their propensity to bypass the usual political process by the use of violence.

CIA warned of risks of war
CIA warned of risks of war in the Mideast

From what has been being released from the real CIA report it looks like White House and some lawmakers from both parties lied to the American and shifted the blame on the CIA for an ill thought out invasion of Iraq. Do you think lawmakers and the White House who knew about this information (Hillary, McCain, Edwards…….) should apologize to the American people and the CIA for either blaming their vote on faulty intelligence, when the report was clear as to the issues about war with Iraq?

MSNBC-In a move sure to raise even more questions about the decision to go to war with Iraq, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence will on Friday release selected portions of pre-war intelligence in which the CIA warned the administration of the risk and consequences of a conflict in the Middle East.

Among other things, the 40-page Senate report reveals that two intelligence assessments before the war accurately predicted that toppling Saddam could lead to a dangerous period of internal violence and provide a boost to terrorists. But those warnings were seemingly ignored.

John Efward's "Bumper Sticker" Comments
While some are shocked at Edward's for saying that the war on terror is merely a bumper sticker, I am not.Let us consider , in aggregate, the various pronouncements of Ted Kennedy, Charles Schumer, Patrick Leahy, Dick Durbin,Hillary Clinton,Nancy Pelosi, etc. While one of the Democratic party's tactics is to stage "show trials"in order to weaken this administration, let us now turn the tables on them. Let us now call for their respective resignations, for either one of two reasons: given their pronouncements, they are either hopelessly stupid/naive about the intentions of the Islamic jihadists, or they are malevolent traitors, quite literally hell bent on the ruin of this country. Either way, they have no business being in the United States Congress.

"Two Americas" is a bumper sticker...
John "Two Americas" Edwards has no room to talk about bumper sticker comments. He could feed a lot of hungry people if he would do without one or two of his $400 haircuts. Like most liberals, he's only generous when he's spending someone else's money.

Edwards - Treasure Hunter
It turns out that John Edwards owns a 10% share in the company that recently found a 500 million dollar treasure in the Atlantic Ocean.

It is very likely that the profit margins for this company are going to be very high.

Think that John Edwards, Hillary, and Obamma are going to call these profits "Obscene Profits" that should be taken by the government and distributed to the poor, like they want to do to the oil companies?

John Konop
Even assuming that what you're saying about this report is true, I'm not going to accuse people of lying until I've seen ALL the reports they were looking at.

So what if one CIA report warns of risks in going to war in Iraq? What were other reports saying? The key words in the MSNBC report that you quote are "selected portions." So, only selected portions will be released, which suggests that those portions that would show that Bush wasn't lying won't be released. Is that it?

We know that Bush relied on British intelligence as well as our own because he mentioned it in a State of the Union address. Plus, he probably had Israeli intelligence at his disposal as well. If the CIA report looked less sophisticated than our own CIA's report, which would you have gone with? Or what if this CIA report is only one part of its full report, and an insignificant part, too?

There are just too many unknowns here for me to conclude that anyone was lying.

A perfect barb

While egregiously unfair to the former Vice President, I submit that the perfect barb with which to puncture the gaseous windbag that is John Edwards would be to call him "the Democrats' Dan Quayle."

I'm dumbfounded
Several of the folks posting here are saying there is no war on terror. What??

Do you sincerely believe they are not plotting to cause more death and destruction on American soil? Really??? I'm blown away by that thought. Unbelievable.

WAKE UP!!! Did you happen to hear ANY news reports of terrorist attacks carried out in Spain and in the UK?? To say nothing of ALL the attacks against American embassies and other interests abroad. And lots more besides (see above posts).

The jihadists are reading this stuff -- you lefties claiming the worst they can do is blow up a few little things -- and laughing their @$$es off.

Whether or not you believe in GWB's War on Terror is one thing (it's real), but not believing these radical muslims are plotting all sorts of mayhem against the US is simply staggering. Mindblowing.

Get your heads out of your little lib groups and WAKE UP!!

Compared to John Edwards, Dan Quayle is more like Washington or Jefferson.

Edwards is more like PeeWee Herman.

There is a reason that
John Edwards and AlGore did not carry their home states in 2000 and 2004.

The people who knew them best "Knew them best".

In 2004, the Democrats tried the strategy of finding a candidate who was "electable". Not the best Ideological candidate, or the best for the country, but somebody who could "beat" George Bush.

They picked John Kerry, figuring that his "war Hero" image from Viet Nam would trump Bush's so called "draft avoidance" image from Viet Nam.

They also figured that John Kerry's Anti war protester image from Viet Nam would energize the democrats drugged out, burned out hippies.

They picked John Edwards, counting on his southern charm and boyish good looks to carry the south and midwest.

What they didn't count on was voters being smart enough to see a con job when one was in place.

Kerry and Edwards did not have enough brains and common sense between them to run successfuly for dog catcher in any venue that was not totally populated by burned out hippies, hard core unemployable welfare cheats, and washington bureaucrats. (that may be redundant)

In 2008, the Dems will try to repeat this unsuccessful act by running Hillary and Obama on a platform of "it takes a village to bring our troops home and tax the hell out of the oil companies, and get all the free cuban style health care you want at the DMV"

Actually
it's not a "war on terror" -- terror is a tactic. This is as realistic an expression as "war on Hate" or "war on Poverty".

We are at war with Islamic Jihadists.

You cannot defeat an enemy if you are afraid to speak his name. Even the characters in Harry Potter books know that refusing to say "Voldemort" doesn't change the fact that the enemy they are fighting IS Voldemort.

Then you have the RCMP, who managed to give a press conference about the 18 Muslim terrorists they arrested here in Toronto and congratulate themselves on never once using the word "Muslim" therein. Were these terrorists LESS dangerous because the Mounties didn't say "Muslim"? Would their three one-ton bombs have been more lethal if somebody yelled "Muslim!" than if somebody yelled "Freedom Fighter!" or our mayor's favourite phrase "Victims of Exclusion!" perhaps?

It's not a "War on Terror." IT'S A WAR ON ISLAMIC JIHAD.

Cal

I wholeheartedly agree!

(I DID preface my suggestion with the statement that such a comparison would be "egreiously unfair" to Vice President Quayle.)

Cal -- For shame!
You said, "Edwards is more like PeeWee Herman."

You should be ashamed of yourself! How can you insult PeeWee Herman like that?

John Edwards War on Terror Comments
I am saddened by the thoughts and comments of some so called fellow Americans. We as a country have become so embroiled in politics that we can't see the trees because we are standing in the forest. If there is anyone out there who can truly in their heart say we are not at war I feel very, very sorry for them. Not because they disagree with me but because what they are asking for is another 9/11 and I'm not sure even that would wake them up. People have listened too long to the liberal press and the likes of Reid, Pelosi, Kennedy, Biden and Kerry and have been brainwashed. Now Edwards has jumped on the bandwagon and is trying to re-write history. I truly did like John Edwards but my opinion has drastically changed since he started his campaign and started to show his true colors. My hat is off to President Bush and the courage he has shown during his presidency. My God Bless him and the rest of our country and watch over us always.

Edwards and dishonor
As we head off into a long weekend, some of us will pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by American soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines and others of our national security apparatus have made over the years.

Freedom isn't free and, oh by the way, thank a veteran for your freedom. Even if you misuse that freedom to spit on those same veterans, burn an American flag or whatever else it is you do to occupy yourself before you go to that h*ll you don't believe in.

John Edwards, those who think like him, and their fellow travelers dishonor those sacrifices. They believe that peace simply means "no war". Morons. Capitulation is possible any day. Living in peace takes a good bit more than that.

All you anti war traitors should hang
We are at war because there is an enemy that initiated the war, After that any speach that gives aid and comfort and encouragement to the enemy should be hanged as a traitor.

And if you think that GWB agents caused 9/11 then bring up the proof and impeach the President otherwise shut the hell up!

Here's the reason to not vote 4 Edwards
It's clear from his speech to the Council on Foreign Relations that Edwards doesn't fully understand the job description of President:

"Iraq's problems are deep and dangerous, but they cannot be solved by the U.S. military alone. My plan calls on Congress to use its funding power to stop the surge and force an immediate withdrawal..."

Hm... His big plan would be to invite Congress to immediately infringe on his powers as Commander-in-Chief. Fat chance.

The man is dangerous.

What do you call the "War on Drugs"?

I'm curious cause you can't fight an inanimate object like "drugs", or "terror"???

Or can you??

John Edwards is a fake
He is such a blow-hard. He made billions suing medical doctors in mal-practice cases where he pocketed billions. Many fine medical doctors were driven out of practice while he gathered in the dough. Pre-election time, he sees he has to cover up his greed and look like he's everyones choice and shining star of righteousness and takes a short-lived job at the Un. of North Carolina "helping the poor." What a "maroon."

Suspicions about John Edwards
Liberal troll here: I agree with a lot of Edwards' criticisms of Bush foreign policy, but I'm very suspicious that he equates Bush's many mistakes with the GWOT--since Bush always tries to do the same thing (Iraq = GWOT). Some lowlife sneakball presidential politics going on here. Fix Bush mistakes as best we can, yes, but for god's sake, to say that Al-Qaida is not a threat to the U.S. is as stupid and arrogant as the Iraq blunder. No, it's even stupider.

Since Hillary is taking away his phony anti-Iraq war gambit, Edwards needs to carve out a left-wing position that Hillary won't follow - claiming we are not really at war with al-Qaida.

For the record, I expect to die in NYC in a radioactive flash. Not because of anything Bush says, but because of what al-Zawahiri says and does. I'm counting on Hillary to kill the guy before he kills me.
