Freedom never takes a holiday

Some 233 years ago we made a clean break from the corrupt Old World of Europe. Fifty-six men risked it all to proclaim in the Declaration of Independence:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That sums it up — the grand total of good government. This was the first government established by “the consent of the governed.”

The rest is history. Freedom is good at pursuing both happiness and prosperity. Empowered citizens pretty clearly create a whole lot better society than do dictators.

But the most striking lesson of history is sadly the opposite of America’s July 4, 1776, birth. So much of the world has long lived under political oppression — in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, South America and Europe.

It’s been tough to watch and read about the recent protests in Iran, knowing that people are bravely choosing to risk beatings and death to stand up in the streets to speak out for freedom. I’m frustrated that there isn’t something I can do.

And then it occurs to me: the best thing I can do, as an American, is to fight to keep our country all that it should be.

That’s no easy fight. As you well know.

Our governments from Washington, DC, to Hometown, USA, are out of control.

The symptoms are almost too numerous and obvious to list. Rampant spending and debt. Regular attacks on our property rights. Corruption. Arrogance. Nanny-statism. Those relentless assaults on every popular reform — from term limits to voter initiative, referendum and recall. Bald-faced violations of fundamental constitutional rights.

The philosophy running government for some time now directly opposes the creed of 1776. Today’s dominant belief is in unlimited government, the idea that everything is permissible, anything is possible, and nothing is sacred.

Disaster looms on the horizon; the storm clouds of several coming catastrophes are now visible and dark.

Politicians cannot stop the rain. Not even the wizardry of Obama can do that.

But I have faith in you to help us weather the storm. Thanks to your common sense — and mine (available through a free subscription).

Our problems are indeed solvable — tough, yes, but not impossible. What seems nearly impossible at times is our politics. Getting politicians and special interests to stop feeding on us long enough to listen to us.

The American people are not the problem; we are the solution.

While politicians and power brokers contemplate the next trillion dollar Frankenstein fix of our economy — or health care, or some even more difficult project of foreign policy — citizens need to act to get back in the game. To have a seat at the table, as the insiders would put it. A seat at our table.

Electing a good candidate to office or defeating a bad guy from time to time obviously isn’t enough. And good guys left to their own devices often don’t stay so good.

Citizens must remain engaged. We have to hold our representatives’ feet to the fire. To do so, we need fundamental change that puts citizens in charge.

The most powerful and dynamic check on power is the voter initiative, referendum and recall process. It is under constant assault from politicians and special interests. We must protect these essential citizen powers where they exist and spread them to voters everywhere.

That’s the best celebration of July 4th, to restore a government that actually acts within our consent.

Long after penning the Declaration, Thomas Jefferson would argue that he knew no safer “depository” for power than “the People.” Safer than kings or nobles — or even presidents and congressmen.

We, the People, are still the safest place to park political power. Oh, sure, I may be sporting a mustard stain on my shirt from a mishap with a hot dog, and you may even be wearing dark socks with Bermuda shorts, but freedom can and is still counting on us.

On July 4, 1776, our country’s founders pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. This July 4 — or July 5, as it happens, today — what can I pledge? What will you pledge?

Tough?

Our problems are not tough. One just needs to follow the framework of the U.S. Constitution and every problem will go away or be solved.

As we see in modern times, Liberals want the government to pick and choose who is more equal, who gets more liberty, and who is free to pursue happiness.

for the first time in my life, i am deeply ashamed of the united states. our government has intentionally chosen to side with tyrants against an upstanding republic that is enforcing its own lawful constitution. for years the united states has taken the right stand in international affairs if it could determine what the proper course of action was. this week, our government intentionally, with malice aforethought, sided with tyranny, even though the right thing to do was obvious. we have sided with evil against the lawful government of honduras, supporting the illegal rule an unlawful would be dictator. i am deeply ashamed to be an american when our government is intentionally evil. unlike the first lady.

The Jackal Feasts
I concur with your analysis, but have difficulty sharing your optimism. You say we need to get the politicans and special interests to stop feeding on us long enough to listen to us, however:

They appear to be in a bloodlust and not amenable to discussion of any sort. The Jackal-In-The-White-House and his fellow jackals are feasting on our guts - while we still live and breathing- Can our outcry alone, individually or in unison, stop them from their single-minded pursuit?

The decimation wrought by the Muslim Marxist Maggot during his mere 165 days in the Offal/Awful/Oaf-full Office is only a foreshadowing of the destruction he plans for our future.

Dependence on 'initiative, referendum and recall' were better suited for another time, when things moved more slowly and there was not a Communist occupying the highest office in the land intent on collapsing the Republic from within with a blitzkrieg unrivalled in American history.

By the time initiatives, referendums and recalls get off the ground the Usurper-in-Chief will have abolished all the protections we think we have in place to save us from dictatorship.

The predator does not stop preying just because the victim bleets loudly.

I watched
the History Channel piece over the weekend that went out of its way to demonize the founding fathers. Using innuendo, rumor, hearsay, supposition, junk history and outright lies, they portrayed Washington, Franklin, Jefferson and most of the others as a band of wealthy, traitorous, womanizing drunks who orchestrated the rebellion for their own selfish interests. And, get ready for this, they were Free Masons! Woooooo! I just wonder who is behind this. Their goal is obvious: Once they have succeeded in undermining and discrediting the founders and everything they stood for, it's easy to junk the Constitution. I'm really riled about this.

Useful Idiots and Mike: Well said! However, WHAT to do? Just blogging makes us feel better, but right now even my ONE liberal friend is beginning to get very quiet. The problem as I see it is we cannot let these usurpers steal our next election. They now use every tactic known...threats, murder, you name it. Don't you think it odd how Franken's opponent just gave in before they even finished counting the re-count?
These people are just like children who have been pressing their noses on the glass store front of a candy store and then just broke in finally and are eating and stuffing themselves as fast as they can before they get caught. Now they own the store.

Not Hopeful
I am not convinced that there are enough Americans who actually want to fight to preserve our freedoms. With each passing day, I get more convinced that "we the people" are more than willing to trade our freedoms for a little more security.

Military, do your dutry.
Freedom never takes a holiday! Well, it's a thought! There is the never ending fight within to keep freedom from taking a holiday.Real freedom is not free and it took it's first serious blow when another politician from Illinois decided that in order to unify, that unity was so important, that he sanctioned the blood of 260,000 of his own countrymen military wise; not to mention 60,000 civilians. We have more to fear from within our country than we do without.
This second "Caesar" from Illinois is trying to further governmental control than did his hero. The military did not take an oath to protect the President, but to protect the Constitution. I think it is time they did so.

You are correct. Most people are not engaged. Thats fine but they shouldn't exercize their right to vote if you ask me. Voting is a serious matter.

Not being engaged is true on both the left and right.

The "un-engaged" conservatives rely on their core values to guide them. They know raising taxes hurts people. They know Affirmative Action Quotas are wrong. They know the people in Tennesee should not be paying for tattoo removal, parks and water fountains in California. They just understand the basics.

Since Liberals lack core values, the "un-engaged" Liberal relies on what sounds good or makes them feel good. They don't actually worry if something actually ends up good or is even true and historically correct.

Many Liberals suffer from the belief that if something is good, it must be constitutional.

Conversely a Liberal will believe if something is bad, it must be un-consitutional.

Their simplistic thought process and lack of critical thinking skills prohibit them from understanding how absolute power corrupts absolutely. That the more power we give government, the less power we the people have.

They know there is waste, fraud, and abuse in government but still they want to give the goverment more power, more money, and more control over our lives. They are unable to connect the dots and understand they are the enablers of the waste, fraud, and abuse. That waste, fraud, and abuse hurts everyone rich or poor, white, black, asian. The guilty and the innocent.

These issues are just too complex for the Liberal mind.

I loved to listen to an old man,
-born in 1862- when I was a kid. He liked to sit outside my dad's little country tavern in the warm Minnesota summer mornings and talk about the old days while he gummed up some pickled pig knuckles and sipped Grainbelt beer. It was a magic time for me. I suppose he told some whoppers but he let known some important things too. Like how poor, poor can really get. And what working a 40 acre farm with a blind mule and a mean and unfaithful wife was like during the late 1890's. He would laugh when I wanted to hear about cowboys and Indians but he'd always have a new story to tell; or an old one spun a little different. I never thought to ask him what he thought of 'freedom'. I would've gotten an earful for sure as there were a lot of 'road apples' he thought should lose theirs and be hung in the smokehouse to cure. Politicians and shysters headed the list, I believe, with anybody who wore a badge only a short way down. He did say something once about his old dog Buster, who'd fled the mortal coil long before. "When the county agent came sneaking around one time he got bit for his trouble." he'd laughed, "'n then I run him off with my old '97 gun. Sheriff came out to have a word that time" he chuckled. Didn't bother none. He knew how us folks were. Stubborn, just like old Buster. Let us be and we'll all git along, bother us and we bite."

Don't Count On It
LD35 "...some of these people might learn something ..." Don't count on it! The dimmies and libbys see what is happening - and many of them have lost jobs and are in dire straits because they voted for Obbie. They search and stretch events to support the Obas----! Yeah, Ob---h was forced to do all this stuff by "W".

My own brother admits that what BHO is doping is wrong, but he has to because of "W", and - no matter what happens - he will still vote a straight dimmie ticket. He thinks FDR was the greatest president and LBJ was a close 2nd. He is college educated with several degrees, a retired administrator who opposed bad school policies, and a WWII hero. On the cutting room floor.
Jefferson wanted the last words to be "and Property". In 18th Century terms "property" meant more than owning land or livestock. It meant PROSPERITY by one's own hand. That flies in the face of the Nanny State but Franklin edited that out because some Northerners assumed that "property" in the mind of a Virginian could only mean slaves.

So in the first act of political correctness in American politics the pursuit of prosperity was left dangling. Sad, because that is what DROVE the development of this nation and made millions of effective serfs, peons and slaves flock to our shores to BECOME AMERICANS not to bring their "many diverse cultures" with them.

Until the Sixties when Ted Kennedy (die already!!) rigged the immigration policies to favor Third World castoffs OVER Western Europeans we saw many generations come here to become something else. To find a new life in a BETTER American culture NOT to reinvent it and recreate the hellhole they escaped from.

The US Decline Since the 1960s.
I wish Senator Ted 'the Swimmer' Kennedy humiliated at the polls, his demise is not my concern.

4 things occurred in the US in the 1960s that put us where we are today. My dates & exact titles may be a bit off, but they are all real.

1. The Immigration Reform Act of 1965: Essentially it shut off immigration from the nations whose people made us a great nation. It allowed unlimited immigration from south of the Rio Grande, Asia, & Africa. What needed reforming, we were suppose to be a great nation then.

2. Govt Finance Reform Act of 19968: All govt revenues would go into one account & all expenditures would be paid out of the same account. This made Social Security & Medicare funds available for spending & was the beginning of the Social Security/Medicare deficit. At the same time Congress removed themselves from Social Security & Medicare & created their own program.
Solution: Put the Congressional retirement & health programs back into Social Security/Medicare and they will find a solution.

3. The Supreme Court allows for dual citizenship in 1967. It declared part of the Nationalization Act of 1911 unconstitutional. There are now about 42 million dual citizens in the US, most from countries hostile to the US.

# 4 plus a bit more.
4. The perversion of the 14th Amendment: The purpose was to prevent former slaves from being forced back into slavery by twisting the law. So former slaves & children of former slaves would be forever free. You had to be in the US legally & with the intent to become a citizen to be a natural born citizen. The children of diplomats, tourists, illegal aliens born in the US would not be US citizens.

I recommend that everyone read or re-read
"None Dare Call It Treason" by John Stormer
(1964). The guy must have had a crystal ball. It partially explains our current financial & political mess.

Some Americans Don't Get It!
I was speaking to a lovely American friend who is quite intelligent and is very familiar with the holocaust. But I was shocked when she told me that she believed Obama was on the right path because Bush made such a mess of things and that maybe, "socialism" was some thing we should try because he says all people legal or illegal should have healthcare through government.

The only thing I could think about was the fact that socialism or communism or marxism has resulted in tyranny. I couldn't understand how Americans can fall into this trap? History proves that every country who believed in anything other than a Republic and a democracy of the people resulted in millions of people massacred, persecuted, slaughtered, homeless, starving, imprisoned, tortured; raped; brutalized; or at the minimum; watched by their government and the police; They can't speak out; practice religions; bear arms; march or protest and parental rights are alienated. Food is rationed. They live in fear. They're watched day and night by "cameras" like Americans are watched today and some times their homes are raided or burned.

Good grief, what are the American people thinking?

But who did they really mean? They meant white men with property are MORE EQUAL than the rest of us. White women had no rights and neither did black people. Indians were slaughtered and their property taken by white men for their own use.

They even put the slavery of black people into the constitution and its still there for the world to see.

And segregation in the south was "legal" although the 14th admendment said otherwise.

What ever happened to the Republicans who helped pass the CRA? LBJ said when he signed it that Democrats would lose the south for decades because it meant the end of "legal" segregation. He was right. All the racist Democrats became Republicans.

WE - the people, not the sheeple, need to take back our country.

It used to be the presidents were picked in smoke-filled back rooms. Well, figuratively speaking - they still are. We are being handed a bunch of idiots for nominees by the parties because this idiot has some quality that should defeat the other idiot.

It has nothing to do with good government.

Money has done the talking - the hugest war chest has the best chance.

You can say that Iowa sets the pattern but the comeback of a penniless McCain was no accident. He was a war hero, didn't you know? Well, he was, but we didn't want him as president. Who did? The ones who thought "For the war, against torture" could beat the democrats.

As if that slogan cured all the countries' ills.

We - the people - need to take back the elections. We need to decide who will run and whom we don't want.

What needs to be done
is for thousands and even hundreds of thousands to march to their state capitols and demand that the state governments enforce the tenth amendment. If we could just do that, we could rein in the federal government. Once that is accomplished we can hold down our states.

OUR Heros

As we were driving home from SC, my husband and I were tired, and complaining about taxes, the sad state of affairs, and all the other things that most of us feel are wrong. Then, we talked about our freedom, as Americans. I sat and realized that during the 1,000 miles we had traveled, we were never stopped and asked for papers, never told we had to have travel papers, and never had our travel restricted, or told we had to submit a travel plan.
Way behind us, I spotted a hearse approaching, off in the distance, followed closely by a small silver SUV. Over the mountains of PA we went, into the green hills of NJ. Finally, the hearse passed us, with a flag draped coffin in the back, the ever present silver SUV close behind.
Onward they went, into the hills of NJ, until they were gone into the distance. Flags on the overpasses became more common in the hills of NJ, as if saluting the honored one passing by. I stopped complaining about our taxes, the small everyday matters we had previously discussed.
“Some mothers’ child”, I thought. Then I realized, this was a hero, going home. I don’t know if that hero fought in a war, was killed in action, or died of old age. But that hero served our country, that hero is one of the many men and women who go about their duty for God, Country and Family. That hero was going home. Godspeed, and God Bless America. Thank You to all the brave men and women who serve to keep us free!

Is entrepreneurial capitalistic “free enterprise” sustainable? Or, has the (233 year) experiment in individual property rights come to a failed conclusion? Is the human race returning (evolving) to a natural state, in which everyone is subservient to the state, totalitarianism?

Citizens’ personal and real estate property ownership; including use, distribution control, compensation for transfer, and relief from confiscatory taxes, must be recaptured from an ever expanding government if modern civilization is to be sustained. Prosperity for a large (as percentage) middle-class must be present for liberty to function as we have experienced.

The analogies are endless…

Yes, the analogies are endless and I love them because they are true reflections of the virtues of what is GOOD and the non-virtues of what is BAD. In politics, as in sports the GOOD and BAD come into clear focus in the extremes. Yet, in politics the playing field is manipulated from outside by those with a self-serving desire for influence and power that has corrupted our institutions to the point of no return; unless WE THE PEOPLE make sure that the playing field is not manipulated.

The question is…How do we accomplish this? (1) Your VOTE…does count…yet your vote is easily manipulated by those with the self-serving desire for influence and power. (2) Your right to petition governments at all levels…yet this right has been severely restricted by those same self-serving individuals and groups.

Anyway, regardless of whether or not there was slavery, done hypocritically in light of the D of I, would this somehow make the truths contained therin any less true. If there is no such thing as inalienable rights, then certainly you have no qualms with slavery, as whatever a man chooses to do is ok. If we do have inalienable rights and government is formed to protect these rights, then surely any reasonable and good person would get behind this purpose.
Ah, but you don't believe in such a thing, so then whoever has power may then do as he/they please, as there is no right or wrong. No absolute, unalterable, inalienable rights,..no standard by which to determine what is right, what is just.
