Rigged rules and rigid unfairness

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

When my kids complain that things aren’t “fair,” it usually concerns who gets the bigger slice of pie. I tell them what my parents told me: “Life isn’t fair.”

But I also tell them that it’s my pie, so it would be perfectly fair for me to keep it all — and for them to get none. I’m being nice to give them pie, not fair.

I think I’m teaching them a valuable lesson about what’s theirs and what isn’t, not to mention encouraging them not to sweat the small stuff, and to have a positive attitude in order to rise above any real or perceived slight.

But don’t get me wrong: I’m for fairness. Fairness is good. I try to teach that, too.

Equality before the law, for example, is more than merely good — it’s vital. We all have an equal stake in our community. No one deserves better treatment from the police or the assessor or the inspector than someone else. We’re all part of the government (like it or not), we’re all “in it” together. So policies should be fair, equal. That is, equally applied — and of such substance that we’d want the laws equally applied.

That’s the idea. The good ol’ republican, good ol’ democratic idea.

But too often, today’s standards are not the same for all. Too often our leaders express opinions about fair and equal that are, well, let’s just say “at odds.”

Years ago, when Ronald Reagan went to the Soviet Union, he used the fact that there are many parties allowed to form in the United States — not just two, and not just one, as in the Soviet system — to make the case for freedom. Freedom to associate, freedom to petition government, and the practical ability to do so, these are all-important aspects of a free society.

Ronald Reagan believed that. Nearly every American knows the justice of the argument.

So, why do there remain onerous hurdles placed in the way of third party and independent candidates to gain spots on the ballot? And why do Republicans and Democrats face hardly any requirements at all?

The questions almost answer themselves.

It’s that way because major-party incumbents want it that way. And the courts have not been strong enough in protecting a pluralistic political system (as recognized in the Constitution.)

I’m certainly not suggesting affirmative action to tilt the playing field toward minor parties. They shouldn’t have it easier getting on the ballot, or be placed every time on top of the list for votes.

That would be too much; indeed, that would be crazy. But, remember, it would be crazy because it would not be fair.

So why not chuck the whole incumbent-favoring party-archy and go back to fairness?

I’ll let that question just hang there, and press the question to other matters.

Consider affirmative action, or what I call racial and gender preferences. I think such practices should be ended. I have trouble seeing how anyone could disagree.

Now, I don’t for a second argue that women and black Americans haven’t been discriminated against. They have — terribly. But it isn’t fair to penalize an innocent person of any color or sex today for the meanness or crime of someone else, yesterday.

If that’s the principle of our polity, then how far advanced are we from throwing virgins into volcanoes?

After I made a similar point in one of my Common Sense e-letters, I received a note from a friend asking where I stood on legacy admissions to universities — that is, receiving extra “points” because your parent or grandparent went to the school. I can understand why colleges might do this. It helps keep alumni support. And I can understand how important it is for some to have their offspring receive education at their alma mater.

But how can any public institution countenance giving someone a leg up because of what some ancestor did. That’s not fair to other taxpayers, who contribute to the support of these colleges and universities even if they do not attend.

Merit is a better and fairer measure. And notice, here (and once again) that fairness isn’t the same as strict equality. People aren’t equal, so shouldn’t be treated the same. The standard of equity demands that we be treated according to our merits.

This even applies to sports. No one — at least no one who’s a good sport — wants a biased referee. And, in setting up contests, no one should want a college football Bowl Championship Series that’s a joke.

The BCS, created by the six major collegiate athletic conferences, picks the two top teams for a national championship game, as well as deciding which teams will go to the other most lucrative bowl games. The BCS (it would be more apt without the “C”) uses polls, various computer models, and perhaps a Ouija board to make their selections.

This season ended with Utah as the only undefeated team. So why aren’t the Utes the champs?

Well, we may find out more soon, as the Utah Attorney General is threatening an anti-trust lawsuit against the BCS.

Sure, BCS defense lawyers will argue that Florida played a tougher schedule than did Utah, and lost only one game, defeating powerhouse Oklahoma by 10 points (in the so-called championship game). On cross-examination it may come out that Texas also had only one loss and also beat Oklahoma by 10 points. Then there is USC; that team, too, lost only one game all season.

The solution is simple. Let the champion be decided on the field of play and not by experts or computer geeks. Create a national playoff. It can be done. Other sports have managed it. But the folks running the major conferences resist.

Why? Because they want to play in the “big leagues”? And act like politicians

We Will Never Have Fairness Again
As long as Democrats can get away with doing the same stuff that gets Republicans jailed, fired, or censured, there will never be fairness again. If David Duke had been a Democrat he would have been okay as a Senator, since Robert Byrd was okay as a KKK member and a Democrat Senator.

CONGRESS the "REVERSE ROBIN HOODS"
America the "Land of Broken" laws that protect the rich, the famous, the business and special interests.

America the "Land of Elected Servants of the People" who serve the famous, business, special interests and especially "themselves."

America the "Land of Honest, God Loving People"

America the "Land of a Do-Nothing Congress"

America the "Land of Corruption in Government"

America the "Land of people who need to wake up and take action."

Support the Oklahoma 3 and others who are taking actions against the elected. Johnny Sutton is the one who should be in jail, not the border guards. Maybe we should investigate President Bush and Audit all elected officials.

When Campaign contributions are restored to the donor by the elected thru contracts, that is BRIBERY. AN BRIBERY IS A FELONY.

Congress, has failed to close the border and failed to remove illegal aliens and illegal drugs. The Border Guards were in the process of removing illegal drugs, so is our Congress in the pockets of the Drug Cartels?

BCS
The BCS was created to generate and share greater television revenue. All of the BCS conferences (not just the Big-6) signed on to the contract. ND and all the smaller conferences get a big payout whether they make it to a bowl or not. The lawsuit is frivolous. Utah, via it's conference affiliation sold it's national championship soul for a guaranteed share of a couple of million dollars. That extra money, from the last 10+ years of the BCS, has made the smaller programs more financially competitive not less. It's also created a system where achievement is secondary to equality of outcome. Why do so many people see the lack of fairness such a system creates in college football, but fail to see it in the broader context of our nanny state?

Obama is an usurper
Obama is an usurper, a pretender to the Presidency. His candidacy was illegitimate, his election illegal and his Presidency will be a fraud and a hoax on the American people and our Constitution.

Presidents must be at least 35 years of age, resident for at least 14 years and a natural born citizen. Obama meets the age and residency requirements but is he a natural born citizen under the Constitution?

A natural born citizen is a person born in America to American parents (plural). Obama claims to be Hawaiian, but absent an official birth certificate, we cannot know for sure. His mother appears to have been an American citizen. However, Obama has written that his father was a Kenyan subject to the British Crown but never an American.

This “Constitutional scholar” should know he cannot take the oath of office without perjuring himself. So anxious were they to stick the first-black-president feather in their party’s cap that the Democrats failed to be Americans and put our Constitution first by thoroughly vetting their candidate.

Well, they have gotten their wish but at the price of creating a Constitutional crises that, if unresolved, will indeed render the Great Parchment nothing more than, in the words of Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, “just a goddamn piece of paper.”

COMING EDUCATION REVOLUTION
For many of my younger years, I was almost a professional student; however, I always attended private learning institutions, not public ones.

In my view, it is not morally right to tax citizens for school expenses who do not use the public education system. This would include grade school and all the way up the educational ladder. Tuition and private grants should fund all schools whether public or private, thus putting then all on an equal footing financially...and may the best school win.

Formal schooling at every level has become largely a massive scam on the public. There is very little true education going on as any alert student can readily tell you. However, the costs are steadily escalating beyond reason and even beyond simple sanity because teachers and administrators are vastly overcharging the system. Why are they doing that? Because they can, just because they can do it and get away with it.

The case for creative home schooling and intense self education throughout life grows daily.

Rigged rules....
Re BCS; Everyone seems to forget that the players on the teams are supposed to be "student athletes". So instead of adding more games, thereby reducing classroom time, why not select the top 4,5 or 6 teams and give all the players an exam based on general information and give the award to the team with the best academic score? The questions would not have to be difficult, perhaps just something like "how many quarters in a half" or "what percentage of the game is played in the second and third quarters"

Bleeding Heart Lib
Sir/Madam: I hope ur posting was satire!! If so, Well Done!! Having said that I agree with Clyde9 more in principle.. I spent 25+ years in Military service, right after the total eradication of segration, and 22 more in Federal Civil Svc.. I saw very little AA in the Military..I cannot believe the proliferation of SERIOUSLY Deficient Supervisors in CS was due to SUPERIOR performance..I MAY be in error!!

AA
I was adversely affected by affirmative action when I was told that I could not even apply for a part time federal government job with the FHA because that job was "reserved for a minority person."

It no longer matters...
... whether the candidate or the incumbent has a "D" or an "R" or an "I" after his name.

It no longer matters whether their skin color is white, black, red, brown, yellow or purple-and-plaid.

Too many have succumbed or are in the process of succumbing to the siren lure of ABSOLUTE POWER.

They're all shifting towards the darker side of their nature, and they're not even bothering to hide it anymore.

Personally, I equate that with turning to the Dark Side of the Force...

take back the government
I have looked at the Constitution Party's platform and I think that there is some dishonesty n their statements. I would like to see all in this country come to the knowledge of the Lord, but I am somewhat concerned that the platform projects a belief of doing this through government and that kind of mixing is unscriptural and will drive many away and ensure a lack of growth through limited appeal. This is why the America First Party has more appeal to me. Please see my earlier posts and give me feedback, particularly if you have any insights concerning the Constitution Party's leadership,

The Endgame
The GOP always has been and always will remain part of The Establishment in DC until True Conservatives educate themselves on the corrupt ways of DC. They have bought into this political lobbyist culture in DC. Well-meaning GOP politicians go there and become corrupt in record time once they buy into the
E-Z money lifestyle. It's a rare day when you find a Jesse Helms anymore.

The Constitution Party is the Peoples' and True Constitutional Conservatives' only salvation, but the People haven't even heard of this party because the MSM, which is in bed, economically speaking, with the Beltway Corporate political system will never promote third parties nor will Corporate America give them any money to launch their campaigns. 3rd parties can only come about in this monetarily corrupt political system by grassroots efforts just as Reagan came about by the same modus operandi.

More realistically, when these 2 parties in DC cause the nation's economy to implode after China, Japan, and many other nations withdraw their financing, both of these parties will be run out of town no mater how much the media tries to play it down or blame it on the GOP, and the People will be clamoring for justice against the TREASON of the politicians in BOTh o fthese parties and they will finally vote their consciences and vote for their Constitution and elect 3rd Party candidates at the voting booth, assuming of course that DC and the politicians are even around after the nuclear blasts go off.

Dr. Douglas
I know you are reading challenge but my comment was directed at Dancing Bear and not the article as being racist.

Cont'd...Rules of the "Game" in DC
This is how th "game" is played in DC. The GOP's function in DC is to be the party that pretends to be in opposition to the Dems, so that when We The People or should I say We The Fools get mad at the Dems, the Corporate money supply is just transferred to the GOP at the lobbyist houses on "K" street when the Dems are thrown out, and the GOP is returned to power in order to maintain Corporate influence and control of our government.

To guarantee this corrupt system remains in operation, the patently UNCONSTITUTIONAL Federal Elections Commission(FEC), which is comprised of ONLY THE 2 ESTABLISHMENT PARTIES, makes arbitrary election rules to insure 3rd parties of We The People are virtually all but eliminated from the political process to maintain Corporate "K" street lobbyist control.

That's why the confirmation of guys like Geithner, a Liberal sack of stinking sh!t "is a done deal" in DC in both parties; he's part of the Corporate and Beltway Establishment with his Ivy League and Corporate pedigree. These are the people that always land jobs in DC bureaucracy in all echelons of government, and the overwhelming number of them are Liberal and Moderate and from the Beltway, born and raised and indoctrinated - whether they call themselves Republican or Democrat, really, as we have all witnessed far too many times lately, makes absolutely NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER. They are just two sides of the same coin - Heads, you lose and tails, you lose, but Corporate America always wins! It's government of the Corporations, by the Corporations, and for the Corporations with MSM media running the propaganda campaigns of the Corporate America/DC/Beltway/Wall Street Establishment.

Reagan Gamed The GOP Establishment
It' so nice and refreshing to hear the truth on Townhall, especially in the midst lately of all of these teary-eyed, revisionist, selective memories of Bush the Amnesty Traitor, the man who approved instead of vetoed McCain-Feingold in defiance of the 2nd Amendment - Way to Go, Bush, you blithering idiot. You were a Socialist then, and you're even more of a Socialist now, and God willing, you will be remembered as a Socialist forever after your GOP is destroyed by your unforgiveably egregiously arrogant malfeasance and the GOP's complicity in that malfeasance.

The GOP, if it were EVER Conservative in the first place, would be skewering & barbecuing the income tax-dodging, Liberal sack of
sh!t, Geithner, but the GOP was only marginally Conservative for 8 years during the Ronald Reagan administration. That's it! Every other nominee they have ran for President before and since Reagan have been Moderates or Liberals. Even a mere 2 years after the so-called "Republican Revolution" of 1994, the GOP runs Bob Dole against Clinton.

This party isn't just the "Stupid Party"; they aren't even an "Opposition Party". They aren't even a "Conservative Party", nor have they really ever been one. Reagan's reign was an anomaly that almost gave power back to We The People, which is not how Corporate America prefers to operate the "game" in DC.

Equality of the preferred
Nice article, though it touched on too many topics. I would have liked to see another paragraph or two on the hurdles encountered by third parties. There are a lot of people who still aren't aware that a third party was the only party who had its presidential ticket filed in Texas by the statutory deadline, but the two "preferred" parties were given a "do-over" and allowed to ignore thee deadline. So much for equality under the law.

willard
The Popular vote is not so great a thing, particularly when the majority of the folks voting have no idea what real Constitutional government is supposed to look like, or don't care and want to change the government instead of their address( Canada, England, Cuba??). As for the electoral college please read the Constitutional Convention debates to see why it was put into the Constitution as we have it.

also

State power
Something else that has been percolating through my admittedly little mind is to change the demographics of a few select states through internal immigration. Four good states are Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Virginia(yes I know it's becoming more liberal, but it's not landlocked and is close to DC. You just go with that where you will.)

incredulous, mickeyg
and others. Please consider;
3rd Party
In light of a few comments here regarding Republican candidates, I urge you folks to stop looking to the GOP as a source of solutions. John Boehner is once again House minority leader, this along with many other signs indicates no real willingness to fight for Constitutional government. Before it comes to the point of another Revolutionary War (I hope we have time), we need to stop propping up what is merely another power bloc looking out for it's own interests, and in a huge surge make credible and viable 1 or more third parties. In doing so we can put forth candidates of a greater purity, and perhaps form coalitions among what I see as some parties with potential. There is the Libertarian Party, the Constitution Party(Hopefully they will see that government is not the avenue for conversion, but still they could be a force), and # others as follows below. Please check them out, feedback is welcomed.

Other applications

Shouldn't the same principles be applied to our voting for a president? I'm still not sure who got the most votes, Obama or McCain. Why do we have and electoral college? Why isn't voting being done by popular vote?

Decriminalize Two Sins
Politicians speaks about freedom for the individual and the evils of big government. But in reality politicians speak with a forked tongue because hookers and druggies are now being jailed. Decriminalization of prostitution and illegal drugs would lead to more freedom and the need for less law enforcement and government.Unfortunately voters feel no sympathy for struggling druggies and hookers as they try to escape the long arm of the law.

Racism and incompetents
I am an anglo of northern European extraction. In my lifetime (Currently 62 and counting) I have never been adversely impacted by affirmative action. I have never been denied a promotion, lost a job opportunity, received a lower grade, been denied a loan or failed to achieve college admission because of affirmative action. Why is this?

Two possible reasons jump immediately to mind. Affirmative Action only impacts minorities. To believe Jacobs and other anti affirmative action whiners, there can be no such thing as a win win situation. If one person wins, someone else must lose. My life experience calls this lame reasoning.

The other possibility (one that I like) is that I am so superior in every way to most Americans - bigger, stronger, healthier, smarter - that what the losers do down at the bottom of the pile will never concern me. And, if someone does "better", big whoop. I happy for them and wish them well.

The Willie Sutton Syndrome

Why is there inequality regarding political parties and college football?

'Cause that's where the money is.

We get the name "capitalist America" because acquisition of capital (money) is the goal and that's NOT a bad thing. Better money than hegemonic rule by one party or one football team.

Our system (capitalism) has gotten the USA to the top of the world. Now we have a president who is an admitted (in so many words) socialist. He's vowed to bankrupt "big coal" and "redistribute the wealth".

The wealth will be confiscated, not redistributed. Under managed captalism, private citizens could start, own and operate businesses, and they could retain the profits. Under socialism, the government will own and operate businesses, and retain the profits.

That's what the Obama-morons voted for.

My Say
After engaging in civil war and losing over 600,000 of our citizens, reconstruction, the civil rights movement and almost 50 years of the Great Society and the greatest transfer of wealth and political power in the history of the carbon cycle; after the enactment of laws to guarantee fairness and the creation of hundreds of state, local and Federal agencies with the power to determine winners and losers and punish the winners, after all of this still those who were the loser are loser and those that were the winners are winners.

And yet, we voted for more of this. Now we are all losers.

Indigenous American minorites continue to fail even worse after all this. Yet, foreign nationals come here and within the same generation they graduate from West Point with honors, create businesses and land on their feet in business and industry.

What does that say?

Like Adolph Hitler said, "It is good for governments that the people don't think much".

remember
Only certain people are allowed to be racistsSo much for the first amendment

Incredulous, Joe Oliva
I agree, the revolution must come,it could be peaceful or bloody. WE THE PEOPLE need to take our country back. No more professional politicians, allow all political parties equal participation, all candidates funded equally, no private or corporate donations. Joe is right. the lesser of two evils is still evil,we need more choices.

TruLib
You are absolutely correct about college admissions. In addition, what you said about private colleges should also apply to any private organization. If Mr. Jones owns a business he paid to establish with his own money, then Mr. Jones, and Mr. Jones only, should be able to decide whom he hires, and for any reason he wants; he should also be free to choose with whom he does business, whether he wants to allow smoking in his place of business, whether he wants to allow dogs or any other animals, and whether he wants handicapped parking or wheelchair ramps. None of that is any of the politicians' business, but they're always poking their noses into places they don't belong.

Let's remember
that tomorrow is the holiday which honors the legacy of Martin Luther King. Let's also remember what he said in his most famous speech: That a person's skin color doesn't matter,; that it's a person's character that counts. I find it ironic that many who invoke his name today seem obsessed with skin color, and seem to care nothing about character (and are themselves sorely lacking in character).

The election process has been totally
engineered by the elites to keep power in their own hands. The end result of this massive accrual of power is pure partisanship as each election becomes about getting more power. Leadership is gone and intelligent, creative, and innovative legislation never makes it to the front.

This has given us the insane and out of control government we now have. Einstein's definition of insanity, doing the same thing expecting a different result has been proven. So, voting the lesser of two evils continues to give us evil, and the only way to change this is to change how we think and act.

The DEM/GOP/MSM propaganda machines are in total charge. It is up to us to reject the lies and begin to stand up and reclaim the inheritance the elites have stolen from us.

If you care to see how this scam was perpetrated on 'we the people', please visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG. The site will be available through February, so check it out. Thanks, Joe

Then let's act to change things!
2 major parties = corruption & thuggery. Neither wants an outsider to contend. They've both got entrenched players they must answer to. We the people circumvent the "gamed" system by using the new tools of communication. If one can believe the reports, BHO received millions from individuals on the net. Why not begin running candidates via the net. Forget having to kowtow to the "party-bigs." These same "bigs" act as illicit gatekeepers, allowing only those candidates to run who're going to play along with the entrenched corrupt practices. That's why we see such little difference between the candidates today, particularly for national office. The revolution must come. We have the means available now. Use the tools of modern communication to circumvent the staid, sad and ultimately frustrating practices of yesterday. We the people really can and shall decide our future. It's past time!

And As To College Admission
If colleges take taxpayer money (states should be free to support colleges, not the fed gov)then all admissions should be strictly on merit. If they are private and no taxpayer money supports the school then the school should be free to set whatever admission standard it chooses.

Mr. Douglas does his class prep here.
See the articles by Mr. Adams.

Forward or back?
Seems to me that all the seekers of equality have put us back into the Middle Ages.

Remember history--Kings, Dukes, and Serfs.

The King's children were going to gain the throne by birth. The Serf had no hope except to bust his back farming or being a lowly tradesman.

Well looky here now. Certain people are GUARANTEED access to colleges, and promotions.
Why?
If you are a member of a Victim Group--Black, Chicano, Gay, Female--all you have to do is threaten to sue if you don't get your (Fill in appropriate award--College, job, promotion) and the pussies that pass as Administrators will give it to you.

Talk about a morale buster, and reason not to pull together.

Plus--it works the other way too. There are people who are very talented. The negative of this is they have no humilty and they demand excessive compensation for their talent.
A few names: Barry Bonds, Terrel Owens, ALex Rodrguez, Matt Leinart

Tell me which team has one a championship with one of these egos on board.

Following college football...
...is like following minor league baseball. If you want to see the best football, you watch the NFL.No BS about whether a player can spell, read ,or write.Just football, that's all.

Racism
Of course this column is racist. What in the world is he thinking? How could he believe that blacks and other minorities could compete on their own merit. Whites are obviously smarter.

Yes, that was sarcasm, but anyone who believes this column was racist obviously subscribe to that theory.

Anyone who believes minorities cannot compete on their merit is racist. imo

TruLib
What a nice post. The conferences can do as they like. If a fan does not care for their system, or its results, he can bltch about it. That's what armchair quarterbacks do. Its a game, entertainment, hardly a venue for serious thought unless one has money involved. And quite a few do, but that's another ball of wax.

They Can AcT As They Please
The conferences can decide how to choose a champion in any manner and it is no concern of the government. It would be completely legal to get all the coaches in a room and play rock, scissors, paper to come up with a champion.

Is government the answer every time you hit a situatuion that makes you unhappy?

Fair?
As Winston Churchill said." The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessing. The inherent blessing of socialism is the equal sharing of misery."

More racism on Townhall

No - it's not tongue in cheek. It's pure racism.

And this was one of the less inflammatory Townhall articles.

DB
That is one of the most racist post I have seen on TH. I sure hope that was tongue-in-cheek. Not many people have it made at birth. Most, black, white, yellow, green, and all shades in between, require hard work to get anywhere. Some will work harder or smarter than others and advance other will always have some excuse why they didn't succeed which will always be someone elses fault.
