Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

We've had our fun sniping about how corrupt the state of Illinois can be, how Gov. Rod Blagojevich is just the latest from a state noted for its smoke-filled rooms, payola, and double-dealing.

But we risk overlooking the real issue: It's not that Illinois is especially corrupt. It's that power tends to corrupt and every governor faces temptation. Many succumb.

It may be that, in Illinois, the state's reputation encourages a certain bravado. Blagojevich used the f-word to accentuate his adamantine insistence on getting a return from doing his constitutional duty.

Governors elsewhere, perhaps just as corrupt, practice a little more suavity, and thus don't hit the newspapers. We don't see headlines like this:

  • Understated Master Rhetorician Schwarzenegger Bribes California's Democrats
  • New York Governor Raises Eyebrow During Crucial Negotiations With Donors
  • Our Governor Remains Pro at Avoiding Quid Pro Quo

Journalists report news, and news amounts to a politician getting caught. A politician raising money in the ways politicians usually raise money is definitely not news, even if politics as usual has all the ethical uprightness of the Tower of Pisa.

The truth is, it's hard to raise money in politics . . . if you are out of power.

I know. I have been involved in fundraising for ballot measures or lobbying efforts around the country. It's not easy. All I can offer is a chance to change public policy.

Sitting politicians, on the other hand, have huge advantages. Their duties include passing legislation and handing out lucrative government contracts that pack quite a wallop to the wallet.

Incumbent politicians are positioned perfectly to say, "You have to pay to play." Government has powers for which some folks will pay a lot. A politician could make a lot of money for providing such private services attached to public goods. It's understandable. Renting a politician's services can go a long way to increasing one's own wealth. And, moreover, the politician's wealth.

Most ways of paying are legal, though often ethically questionable. Some ways -- more blatant and obvious -- can be illegal while remaining hard to catch. Politicians know which words to use in avoiding a literal quid pro quo statement.

Blagojevich suffers, now, from his bluntness, his gruff, vulgar corruption. But every politician is tempted with similar activity. Blagojevich serves as the tip of a much larger iceberg. Most just play it more subtly.

So, Americans outside Illinois have no reason to gloat. The fact that their governors haven't been arrested does not mean their governors are not also dirty. Just, perhaps, more clever.

Of course, some politicians are honest. Most people don't get into politics for the money. They get into it to "do good." Inevitably, politics is run on money, and money often becomes the only gauge some people can find for "goodness."

And, my goodness, does this standard have awful repercussions. The longer a person stays in strategic loci of power -- that is, in office, or in bureaucracy -- the more that person will see funneling money through government as the solution to every problem.

If all you have is a hammer, everything soon looks like a nail.

Some folks are more resistant to this education in nail-pounding than others. This is a matter of personal psychology, I suppose, as well as personal morality. It helps if you make a public stand to resist the process. Self-term-limiters like Dr. Tom Coburn come to mind (as does the fact that public support for congressional term limits is at an all-time high).

It also may help to know something of economics, for instance -- that is, the economics that recognizes limits to knowledge. To understand the complexity of that fabled beast, "the economy," and then to realize that no prediction can be certain helps inoculate oneself from schemes to control it all with varying amounts of power fueled by increasing amounts of money.

Governor Blagojevich surely deserves the hammering he's received in recent days. But it is important to hammer home a much broader point. Power corrupts. Politicians (being human, only more so) are susceptible to this corruption. Good government requires that citizens have practical ways to nail down the power of politicians.

I bet there are politicians who worry that Bagojevich's latest bit of corruption might cause citizens to look more closely at all the rest.

IF THE MAJORITY
of Americans didn't 'look closer' than the MSM TV news, nor bother to 'hear' more than barrys 'teleprompter', then politicians know they don't have to worry about the public they 'dis-serve' demanding their crooked butts be be ivestigated, little less thrown in jail.

Corruption in Government
Illinois is corrupt. The Chicago machine now controls Springfield AND the White House. I predict that the Obama administration will be the most corrupt administration in history as long as Emanuel and Axelrod are on the scene. I predict that this will be the MOST repressive administration ever. That our rights will be taken for the good of the state.

REV. RICK: POLITICAL PLOY.
Barack Obama's "courageous" choice of Rick Warren for giving the opening prayer at the inauguration had nothing to do with "reaching across the isle" in the spirit of bipartisanship and unity. On the contrary, picking an outspoken opponent of gay marriage was a calculated ploy to divert attention from the very damaging Blagojevich affair. Outraging homosexuals and gay marriage proponents shows just how badly Obama is hurting especially from the salt that Hannity and Rush are rubbing into his wounds. If Blago doesn't resign or isn't removed from office Rick Warren probably won't be the last of Obama's ploys.

Since Blago now swears to defend
himself to the end, no doubt he will throw as many people under the bus as the road can hold. We'll hear a lot less of Nancy Pelosi's *Republican culture of corruption.*

Have you ever heard of a Republican pol. *machine?* No, there was Tamany in NYC for generations, Hague in N. Jersey for 1/2 a century, Prendergast in MO (produced Harry Truman), Boss Huey Long in LA of monumental proportions (produced the Sinclair Lewis All the King's Men), not a Rep. among them.

The best aspect of the IL prosecution momentarily is Fitzgerald's nitwit conviction of Cheny's chief of staff Libby (Fitzgerald never *found* who *leaked* the Valery Plame name and actually knew the source was Under Sec. of State Armitage all along) is that Fitzgerald was, until a moment ago, a darling of the MSM and babe-on-board of the lib. establishment generally.

The usual suspects will have a harder time attacking Fitzgerald for running a *witch hunt* than they did with Starr when he was pursuing the Great Corruptor, Bubba Clinton.

Doubtless, the Bro O was in the mix, because any pres.-elect leaving an open Sen. seat would discuss his/her replacement (a la Clinton in NY), so for O to proclaim he NEVER spoke to Gov. B. is nonsense. The wonderkind would've been better off admitting he spoke to the IL gov., at least through staff, than trying to pretend he knows nothing of the issue and heard no evii, spoke none, and surely saw nothing and nobody. O must have a very vacant life.

Obama is up to his skivvies in Chi-IL sludge so far he can barely balance himself while standing upright. Palin/Jindal in 2012. Pass the popcorn.

Term Limits
Easy to say and they should be limited to 2 terms but who is going to pass that bill? Politicians have made careers, not public service, out of elected office. Maybe some intentions were better then others but two terms is enough. Nice thought but since when will the will of the people be heard and acted upon. Worked great with the bailouts.

To Apollo Speaks in Fl
Actually, I believe, barry chose Pastor Warren because the 'one' has already started campaigning for 2012. Isn't that what he's most skilled in doing? barry has his 'kitchen cabinetry' to run and ruin our Nation, 'cooking' up their socialistic recipes as well as 'cooking' the books. And making sure the American taxpayers butts are 'cooked' in the process.

About This article!!!
All of it is so true just come to Florida and see what goes on here. We have Cubans out of ears because someone decided to legalize them before they even come here and there are so many of them here that may as well call this part of Florida Cuba and that is a fact.

BLAGO AND CHARLES BRONSON
Doesn't Blago remind you of the young Charles Bronson? As I recall Death Wish II was filmed in Chicago.

How much for his resignation?
Why not go out the way he governed, and sell his resignation? Perhaps the citizens of Illinois should take up a collection to buy him out of office. It would be the best deal of all the financial buy-outs this year.

Gerry
The colonists had the same problem, however, they didn't surrender their rights.

All we, including myself, need to reckon with is our fate of living on our knees, or dying on our feet.

Corruption
Blago was just playing the Illinois game. Everything in this state is corrupt and for sale. Did you see him on his steps Thursday and the local media begging him to throw a few crumbs their way.
This is the way it has always been. All of our media is corrupt. We only have one major blog and he's a big liberal democrat who deletes anything that might get close to the truth.
We have a few republicans but those guys have all made their deals with the devil. The top republican in the state roomed with Blago in the state legislature and his father christened both of Rod's daughter. Buddies till the end ? Not quite. Now they are all shocked at what was happening.
Even after we knew Blago was under investigation by the feds. The Chicago Suntimes endorsed him.
You can't get the truth out of anyone in this state. Poor Fitzgerald is fighting a losing battle. Illinois is not shocked at anything our politicians do. After all we continue to vote for this scum. Nothing will change because the voters are happy with the system. If Blago had not been arrested he would have been reelected. Even with approval rating at 8%. As Obama demonstrated. Money will always buy you whatever image you want the voters to believe.

A couple of thoughts
Most people get into politics to do good? Mr. Jacob, do you have any data to support this contention?

ApolloSpeaks - exactly right. Everything Obama does is political and he makes few mistakes in this domain.

Two Comments
1. The citizens of a democracy get the government they deserve.

2. Term limits are already in place. They're known as elections.

Power and Corruption
Power corrupts.
Politicians and most people in leadership roles are looking for power and permanence of their power and influence in office, financially and otherwise.
Politicians are corruptable because of their desire for power.
Term limits help because most of the Sheeple don't look past those issues that make it to the one-sided MSM reports which are mostly controlled by the Liberal Left Wing, those who believe that Big Government can solve all the problems of the world and moral issues are of no importance.
It's shameful how financial contributions are held to such high esteem when evaluating a politicians electabiity.
Performance and moral values have little importance.
Sad. Very sad indeed.

Chicago Bred
Why shouldn't Blago try to sell Obama's seat? The very same seat was bought for Obama. That's the way it is done in Il. Has always been. Especially in Chi Town.

Why did Fitz come out and spill his guts about what he had on Blago? To poison the well for him? Turn listeners against Blago before the entire story comes out?

Who is editing the reports? What is being redacted so as to save the bacon of the real culprits? Inquiring minds want to know.

Okay
So, start exposing the corrupt governors. Tell these people:

http://www.judicialwatch.org/blog

Rowly
I have to defend Fitzgerald. I've heard all the loony right wing conspiracy crap. This is crazy. Blago was on the verge of selling a U.S. Senate seat. That would be a hard thing to undo. Might have taken years in court. All the while Blago and his senator would be having news conference declaring their innocence.
Fitzgerald did absolutely the right thing by stopping this crime.

I Predict
that Gerry is right.

And, Upland William, elections are not, repeat, are not term limits.

Apollo's right, Fishy is not
Of course 'bama chose Warren to take the heat off of the Blago story. He HAD to because as he is only the President-elect, he doesn't yet have the power to fire Cruise missiles at BS targets to divert the MSM for 15 minutes.

Once he gets into office he will get rid of any semblance of morality and just fire missiles at Israeli targets to divert the MSM and please his friends to boot.

Rahm Has In Effect Pleaded "The 5th

I don't think anybody is being fooled by the "scrubbing" and cover-up of the President-select and his minion's complicity in whatever "alleged" Senate seat buying & selling that was taking place between Hussein's office and that of the Governor.

Because of their collusion, this whole thing will blow over... and the Governor is holding all the cards he needs. You know it...and I know it.

Proof of my assertion will be borne out when Fitzgerald and co. drop all current charges against Governor Blagojevich...and go back to the "drawing board."

It's becoming increasingly clear that the only reason the investigation ended, is because the Hog Trough Messiah was wallowing around in the slop and was up to his Curious George ears in $h!t.

Stephanopoulos clears Emmanuel
Former Clinton Press Secretary George Stephanopoulos wrote a column speculating that former Clinton Adviser Rahm Emanuel is innocent of any wrongdoing. This is considered "objective journalism".

The Blago Farce
Too many things do not make sense in this little farce. Who is doing the editing and redacting on this little report? What are they editing?

Why did Fitzgerald come out and spill his guts to the world about what he had? Why not just go to the source? Why poison the minds against Blago before any charges were filed?

Did he stop the investigation before any higher-ups were implicated? It would not look good if the ADMINISTRATION was involved, now would it? Inquiring minds NEED to know.

Iceberg hook
This column had me hooked when I saw "Iceberg" in the headline. I was hoping for some hard hitting coverage of what lies beneath the proverbial tip. Instead it simply used equivocations of govenors who may not have given into temptation.

When will we see some real journalism that exposes the ugly underneath of the government corruption, not only in Illinois, but also prevelant from Washington to county levels?
