Grandma Got Run Over by the Olympics

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Just how important is it to you that your grandmother not be sent to a labor camp?

As the Beijing Olympics fade in memory, take one last note of the septuagenarian women threatened by Chinese authorities with a year in a labor camp for the terrible crime of seeking a permit to protest at the Games.

I’m confident that your inquiry won’t harmonize with so many world leaders and media outlets obliviously dubbing the Games a “success.”

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon released a statement congratulating “the government and people of China on their unprecedented effort and success in hosting the historic Olympic Games in Beijing.”

It’s nice that Mr. Ki-moon notices the blessed distinction between the government and the people — the ’Butchers of Beijing’ and the butchered. But how, then, can he congratulate the former?

As the XXIX Olympiad came to a close, The Washington Post’s front-page headline lacked subtlety: “A Victory for China: Spectacularly Successful Games May Empower Communist Leaders.”

Even the Christian Broadcasting Network argued, “Granted . . . it’s not as if every area of disagreement has simply melted away. Instead, the Olympics provided a way for China and the international community to come together and to begin to find common ground.”

How much “common ground” should we be expecting to find with thoroughly repressive China?

But there I go bringing politics in. International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge, a man with no ax to grind against tyranny, let it be known that, “The IOC is extremely pleased with the organization of the Games.”

Yes. Perhaps we should write that word “organization” with a capital O. (Should we capitalize “oppression” as well?)

Rogge, later given an honorary gold medal in synchronized cluelessness, announced at one news conference, “China has opened for the world to learn all about China, and China all about the world.”

What China learned, I’m afraid, is that political leaders throughout the world have little concern for freedom, for basic rights.

Back in July, IOC President Rogge had bragged that, “For the first time, foreign media will be able to report freely and publish their work freely in China. There will be no censorship on the Internet.” But he reverted to “silent diplomacy” when the Chinese communist government censored the Internet anyway, in violation of the agreement with the IOC.

At Games’ end, Rogge did share with reporters that he “found it unusual” that the Chinese government had not issued a single protest permit.

President George W. Bush also played the fool in Beijing. Many people — including this columnist — counseled Bush not to attend. He went anyway. While the President did offer a few words of gentle condemnation concerning China’s sorry record of systematically violating human rights, his presence tacitly endorsed the Chinese regime.

Actions speak louder than words.

And a picture speaks the proverbial thousand. The photo of Bush bear-hugging Russian Thug-in-Chief Vladimir Putin was beamed around the globe as the Russians marched into Georgia.

As for China, a White House spokesman said the Administration was “disappointed,” calling the Olympics “maybe an opportunity missed for the Chinese to demonstrate their willingness to be more open and to allow more freedom of speech, freedom of religion, while the world was watching.”

Of course, what those who didn’t already know learned about China was that the country’s rulers have no willingness to allow more freedom. That’s why none was demonstrated.

On the other hand, the Chinese seem more than willing to cheat in gymnastics. They also keenly fake fireworks shows. And switch a lip-syncing child for the real singing child merely to present a prettier Chinese face to the world. China’s Olympic behavior echoes the old Soviet approach to sports.

How can anyone see such spectacles and not be struck by the depressing, de-humanizing effect of near-total government power over the individual?

The Chinese athletes won more gold medals than athletes from any other single country, including the USA. Yet, they lacked a certain level of enjoyment.

“Our athletes have more pressure than other countries’ athletes,” says Mao Zhixiong, a sports psychologist at Beijing Sports University. “Many Chinese athletes practice their sports not because they like it but because they are selected by the country.”

Many promising young athletes are taken from their families at a young age. Zhao Mu, chief editor of the blog channel at Sohu.com, says Chinese athletes lack a personal motivation, seeing themselves as “just symbols of national honor to be shown in public.”

The Olympics are always a little suspect to Americans. After all, there’s no football. Instead, gold medals are awarded in badminton and rhythmic gymnastics. The 1984 Olympics showcased solo synchronized swimming. (But that didn’t last long; booted out after one Olympics because, well, what is a “solo” supposed to “synchronize” with?)

But as lovers of sport, Americans invariably enjoy the Olympics. We do not, however, enjoy despotism. And we should not have to accept one along with the other.

Our leaders may willfully ignore the obvious, but we citizens must never do so. Even if all we can do against such oppression is to recognize it, refusing to excuse it in any sense, at least that’s something.

Do we really HAVE to meddle ?
"Human Rights" has become the banner for meddlesome Americans and Europeans on a global scale.
Our "culture" has evolved to a point where we "MUST" meddle in every aspect of human behaviour here at home and abroad. We want to legislate what we can eat, drink, smoke and even the words we can say or write.
We should really start minding our very own business and stay out of our neighbors' backyard.
Our "Human Rights" legions have long since been internationally discredited as useless "busybodies" poking our "Politically correct" imbecilities on other peoples we know nothing about.
Every people have the government they deserve and we seem to be pretty close to voting for a totalitarian-communist system with a central-command economy while the trends in the worlds' fastest growing countries (BRIC) Brazil, Russia, India, China are running the opposite: towards freer enterprise.
We already have pretty good examples of this on a State level, excessive regulations and taxes (US Businesses are the second most highly taxed in the world today) as in California, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylania, bankrupt financially, economically and in CA morally and spiritually too!
We must get off our fat fannies, roll up our sleeves and get the hell out of other peoples' business.

Regarding "Do we really HAVE to meddle?"
On the one hand one might be able to argue that we meddle in too many of the world’s problems. We might be accused of trying to export democracy where it won’t work and is not wanted. We might be accused of being imperialistic. I’m not quite sure if this would apply to having an opinion about a country’s egregious policies and human rights violations. I’m not sure if it would keep us from openly criticizing them vis a vis Paul Jacob’s criticism of China’s barbarism.

On the other hand Egon has taken a huge leap into irrationality in regards to the shift in our country towards socialism and the giant strides we are taking towards losing our civil liberties. Where as one might argue we need to leave the world alone, we cannot ignore the seismic shift in our own country towards loss of freedoms as so many embrace personal peace and affluence, at any cost. It seems that Egon is saying we can and should do nothing oversees because we are just as bad. I sure hope the philosophy of leaving well enough alone internationally is not being embraced in regards to our problems in this country.

I agree with Paul Jacob’s stance, his challenges to have China recognized for being a despot, and for its sham glitzy Olympics. I salute the individual and team honors by all countries and individuals. I am saddened by the lack of freedom of China’s and other countries involuntary servitude to a sport, not to the sport of the individual’s choice, but to a sport that the country has chosen and for which the individual has not choice and for which the individual is taken form his/her family at a young age. I salute the joy of victory so obvious in the athletes from the free countries of the world.

Right on Mr Jacob!

Meddle?
There's nothing in this column about meddling? This is the typical us vs. them Townhall column where them is criticized as if nothing they do is acceptable. Even the athletes don't enjoy their sports.

This is what these columnists do best. They whine and moan and criticize and say how horrible China is.

But not one word about how the world should address it.

Obama and Black Genocide
Black Genocide in America

"Martin called infant killing evil.

Barack Obama calls it "a women's right.

" Martin Luther King made his observation from a jail cell, having been put there for defending the civil rights of those whom had been denied theirs.

Barack Obama has made his from caucusing with those who profit from the destruction of babies in the womb.

These are men and women who ignore the silent screams of a lost generation."

Rev. Dr. Clenard H. Childress, Jr.

Communist Goals for America 1963

I have the 45 goals the Communists have for America, that was read into the Congressional Record in 1963. You will be amazed at how the Communists have succeeded by 2008 - 45 years later. I have listed five (5) examples
------------------------------------------------
Communist Goals (1963) Congressional Record--Appendix, pp. A34-A35 January 10, 1963
Current Communist Goals EXTENSION OF REMARKS OF HON. A. S. HERLONG, JR. OF FLORIDA IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES Thursday, January 10, 1963 .

16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.

17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers' associations. Put the party line in textbooks.

24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them "censorship" and a violation of free speech and free press.

25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.

26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as "normal, natural, healthy."

Paul Jacob, the Rising Star
It's important for this "rising star of political writing" to know that Pan is the UN chief Pan Ki-moon's last name. Calling him "Mr. Ki-moon" is laughable. It shows how much this "rising star" knows about the world. He did a good job of copy and paste in the rest of the article.

We don't have to "meddle"...
...but we don't have to avert our eyes, and pretend that China is not a brutal dictatorship that imprisons its citizens without cause, tortures them and kills them, in the name of Marxism.

China's propagandizing is right in line with the history of the Communist dictatorships, and Nazi Germany, and their Olympic teams.

Obama delenda est.

Meddling
If America fails to speak out, a crowd screams we are being selfish & greedy or stingy. If we do speak out, another crowd claims we should mind our own business. Its a no win situation.
I prefer to always speak out in favor of freedoms.
As for this nation, we are embracing tactics, policies, systems, bureaucracies, that are dangerously close to socialism. And, if one form of government has ever been proven to be an abject failure when it comes to the economy & to the rights of individuals, its socialism.
Chavez, who Carter told us conducted a fair election despite numerous other groups pointing out the opposite, is now curtailing press freedoms, and stealing the national treasury blind. He has arranged for many to disappear. He has nationalized the oil industry, yet the entire system is now falling apart due to lack of maintenance & repairs.
His socialist tendencies are typical & his despotic actions are also. We need personal freedoms. We need to keep out of peoples personal business. We need to realize that more government means less freedom. It also means higher taxes, but not necessarily more services for those taxes. Large government bureaucracies also mean, more corruption. Look at the UN & its fiasco's as an example.
Imagine a larger American government, or even worse, the socialist ideal of a one world government. Then pray we can oppose & overturn such idiotic idea's that would mean an end to the freedoms individuals in America & elsewhere enjoy or strive to enjoy.

Olympics
What's the latest on the underage Chinese gymnasts? There was talk of stripping them and their teams of their medals. Is the IOC going to cave again?

Obama is Mentally Ill
Cape Conservative posted this:

"How he had the "audacity" to put himself in the "temple" just shows it is all about Barack, nothing more! Wonder why he didn't have his grandmother on stage with him to celebrate this spectacular achievement - one, that without his grandparents' help, would never have made!"

You got it Cape. Obama is the Supreme Narcissist. He will never allow anybody to share the Spot Light or The Camera's Flash with The Messiah. This particular Mental Illness is accompanied with Delusions of Grandeur.

A Narcissist is totally in Love With Self, and cares nothing for anything or anybody else.

A Sociopath has No Conscience and can Lie and never make a ripple on a Polygraph Machine.

This particular character trait is almost always found in Serial Killers. Narcissism coupled with the fact that he is Sociopathic, makes him the most dangerous man in America today. If he were just a regular stooge in the U.S. Senate or Illinois state senate, you could ignore his mental illnesses and his ignorance, but just the fact that he has even been elevated to the status as Candidate for the presidency, is very dangerous for this country.

Obama was handpicked by his Communist Handlers for this time in history, and the Communists in the Democrat Party handpicked this Puppet because they Know he Knows Nothing, and as long as they Allow Him The Spotlight, that he will do and say anything they, The Democrat Communists Tell Him To Say and Do.

We have to make certain that this Sociopathic Narcissist never has an opportunity to mis-represent this country as POTUS. Get Out The Vote and Vote No To Obama and Vote No to Any Body that Supports him Locally, in your State, and at the Federal Level of government.

We have to clean up our country by ridding our system of Liberals and then Abolishing All The Laws and Agencies of Government that They Created. We are a Republic, Not A Communist Welfare State.

Rick
The IOC declared it did not find any violations by China regarding the age of its female gymnasts. I heard it earlier last week.

But we knew that.

As to not meddling, we do have to pick our fights. But we don't have to pretend that there are not others who would love to not only see us fall, but would dearly enjoy being the reason for it.
