Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

How do you build a monument to a senator?

Well, you whittle away everything that doesn’t look like a senator.

Unfortunately, statuary is out of fashion. Today’s trendiest and most powerful senators don’t want their likeness carved — they want to carve huge chunks out of the federal budget to devote to their gigantic projects.

Take Senate President pro tempore emeritus Ted Stevens. We can forgive the indecency of an airport named after him — perhaps. It was, after all, the Alaska State Legislature that changed the name of the Anchorage International Airport to the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, after Stevens survived a plane crash there, losing his first wife in the tragedy. It’s harder to forgive the current Senate President pro tempore, Robert Byrd, for all the buildings and bridges and such named after him. He worked hard in the Senate to put his grandiose projects up, to his own . . . unintended ignominy.

But let’s not be too easy on Ted. The man has done so much for pork barrel spending in his state he might as well be dubbed Snorts Cooper. Alaskans, known for their hardy individualism, are the biggest recipients of federal largesse in the union. And it is Ted Stevens who did this for them; it is Ted Stevens who turned the The Last Frontier into the current Queen of Federal Project Welfare. (Though let us not forget his great ally in this, his younger colleague, Don Young. Young, Alaska’s sole House rep, has tried mightily to out-pork Stevens, and has been instrumental in bringing some of Stevens’s more recent porkfest projects to fruition, or at least notoriety.)

The two shining examples of Stevens’s attitude towards federal spending are the notorious Gravina Island Bridge and Knik Arm Bridge projects, the infamous “bridges to nowhere.” Not only were they unnecessary, and not only were they to be paid for by American taxpayers at large rather than the state taxpayers who might be said (with some laxity) to benefit from said bridges, Ted Stevens also insisted, in 2005, that they still be funded even after Hurricane Katrina damaged parts of the Louisiana infrastructure that desperately needed help in repair.

You cannot call Stevens an impartial figure. He is the old-fashioned type of politician. He serves his constituencies first, America second.

Well, make that “America third.” If at all.

For whom does he really serve first?

Himself.

His own image.

His own ambition.

His own sense of self-importance.

And we know this by looking at his general career. We didn’t need help, really, from the recent indictments brought against him for a particular kind of corruption.

Over a year ago, on July 30, 2007, federal agents raided his home, looking for information on his recent renovation. Precisely a year later, he was indicted for failing to report over $250,000 in gifts. Among those gifts was a major upgrade on his house, courtesy of one of Alaska’s biggest oil field contractors.

That same contractor had found himself indicted the year before.

The allegations fit with Stevens’s career; they’re hardly unexpected. He’s a player. He knows how to move money around. And he doesn’t feel bound by the principles of the Constitution (he’ll spend money on nearly anything, enumerated powers notwithstanding) or by the principles of current law (to be proved in court). He goes about doing what he thinks he should be doing, which is moving huge chunks of money from U.S. taxpayers in general, and distributing those monies to his state, or his cronies in the state, in the form of special projects.

It may be that one or two of the favors finagled for his state were in the national interest. Perhaps a Senate that abided by the Constitution would have thrown him one or two of the thousands of bones he’s been given.

But that speculative gimme doesn’t justify his career. Or his methods. Or his tantrums in the Senate when his way gets temporarily blocked.

Only an old hack like Ted could have accumulated so much power over the years to push through so much pork, like those two bridges, like a hundred other bits of nonsense. Ensconced for years in a safe seat of power, one form of corruption begets another. The one can seem just as natural a part of the political landscape as the other.

In a republic, citizens must be ever vigilant against all forms of corruption. That’s why we must oppose pork spending on principle, even if tempted otherwise by politicians. And that is why we must push, now more than ever, for constitutional limits on terms of service for our national legislators, as well as requiring our legislative servants to specify precisely which words of the Constitution grant them the power to do what they demand. In every instance.

Indeed, we must whittle away everything in a politician that looks like corruption.

When we’re done, what we’ll have will look nothing like Ted Stevens.

What a joke...
What a joke Ted Stevens is....

Throw the Bum Out!!
Both sides of the aisle are so corrupt. Term limits is a very good start towards cleaning up the mess. Unfortunately this will take years and fortitude on the part of the voters whose attention span is about like a fly's.

No wonder
the government is in such enormous debt. Look at the 3 longest serving, or should I say ruling, senators. This crook, the drunk Ted Kennedy, who couldn't even be unseated after killing a woman while in a boozed-up stupor, and, of course, the longest ruling parasite in the country's history, former high-ranking Ku Klux Klansman Robert Byrd. These three gangsters have been ripping us off for nearly five decades.

Constitutional Limits
I like the idea that every project must prove it's worth by the Constitution- also, how about reinstating the law that only dead elected officials names be given to building projects?? How about dead for 10 years?

Term limits...
...The only fly in that ointment is that Congress has to approve the Constitutional amendment that requires (Thank you,Supreme Court!)Then it has to be approved by 2/3rds of the state legislatures.Notice how only legislatures are involved in the process. And yet it is the LEGISLATURES that are the problem.

No one on this site will live long enough to see any of this happening.

"Kill 'em.Jes' kill 'em all"...Gen Willian T Sherman.

My first instinctive reaction
is to strip him of his power and unceremoniously throw him out. But then, instead of a 51-49 dem majority, we'd have a 51-48 or 52-48. Why is it that it's always the Republican crooks that get hounded out of office while the Dem crooks get a pass? How about a deal: the Repubs dump Stevens; the Dems dump Byrd?

michigander
What difference does it make which party is in the majority? The R's had both houses and the White House. They could have practiced what they've been preaching--cut spending. The D's would have screeched and moaned and called them racists, accused them of starving babies and oldsters, all of theier usual phony talking points--but they couldn't have done a thing to stop them. And what did the "ficscally responsible" Republicans do? They racheted up spending more than any Democrats ever had. And, of course, the D's accused them of cutting spending. How can anybody take Republicans seriously any more when they say they want to cut spending? Republican voters remind me of battered wives who keep going back to the bums who beat them up, believing them when they promise not to do it again--and they always do. Had enough? Vote Libertarian!

Send ALL the porkers packing
That old b@$t@rd, Stevens, needs to be tarred and feathered and run out of town on a rail. Next we need to go after the other major porkers, Ted Kennatee and Robbie Big Bird.

The last dismal session of Congress should show even the dullest dimwit voter that at least 90% of the rats are only out for themselves.

VOTE FOR NO ONE! Make incumbency a liability. Find a constitutional conservative to run against all liberals and RINOS.

If we don't take back Washington, it's only going to get worse. And if Mr. "diahrea of the mouth/constipation or the brain" Obambi, wins - the porkers will be stampeding to the trough, trampling our rights and pocketbooks.

I'm only voting for Shaddeggs, Cornyns, Demints, and Kyls. No more Stevens, Byrds, Jeffersons, Craigs, or Rangels. Corruption begins at HOME, and if you're voting these crooks back into office, again and again, IT'S YOUR FAULT!

I have NO choice for President this year, but I damn sure don't have to vote for Rep(D) Raul Grijalva, one of Red Nancy's loyal butt boys...

Term Limits
Term limits sound wonderful, but politicians forget about term limits after experiencing the power, lavish life style, and public adoration that political office can offer. I am sure that Ted Stevens thinks of himself as being an heroic figure, sacrificing for the people of Alaska.

Term limits
It's the solution. Being inside the beltway has a way of infecting even those that have honorable intentions. Power, fame and greed are truely aphrodesiacs. Hard to give up, once you've had a taste. Term-limits won't happen because politicians have to enact and vote in the legislation. Imagine Pelosi leading the charge. Remember her quote of "draining the swamp"? The only answer is our one vote. No one gets to stay in for more than 2 terms, republican or democrat. Unfortunately, there are too many uninformed, uneducated Americans amongst us that just don't get it! Do your part; act locally and spread the word. It's time to take OUR country back. GOD bless America

It's all pork
The joke is that just as the Democrats have a Byrd and others, the GOP have Stevens and Young and equally others. Go down the list. Six years without a veto in a GOP controlled DC, followed by two years in which over 1/2 the GOP routinely voted for the same pork they'd voted for in the first six years - while also voting to over-ride Bush's threats of a couple of vetos when he finally decided to try to rein it in a bit - having not done so for the first six years. So, spending increased from $1.85 trillion in 2000, to $3.25 trillion today. Surprise, surprise. An all-time record.

At the same time, this is just "what we call pork". Note the emphasis. Pork is generally identified as a bill that proviedes money for some single purpose in a single state. However, if as was true of the AG bill, the hogs get together and give "everyone" in a category (rice farmers, etc) some pork. Well, that's not pork. After all, it slops some money out to hundreds of pigs in 1/2 a dozen states.

That's just good legislation.

And you think we're going to fix this? What a laugh. The Democrats aren't going to change - and those of you holding onto the idea that the GOP will change are just whistling in the wind as well. After all, if any year was a year for the GOP to re-establish itself as a fiscally responsible "party", this is it. So, what did the GOP do? It's caucus's in both the house and senate refused to endorse rules that would "prevent" them from introducing or voting for pork. So much for that one.

They'd rather lose 5 to 7 more senate seats, and 15 to 20 house seats, than give up pork. And, they probably will. If, after all, you're going to vote for someone to bring home the pork, you might as well vote democratic. After all, the winds at their backs, they'll have control, and you'll get more from them - the old reliables - than the old minority party.

Pork
McCain says no more pork. Coming from a politician, that's hard to believe. Then again, my understanding is that he has one of the best records against it. Feel free to correct if I'm wrong. It's all about the congress. The president cannot spend without congressional approval. The congress can with a veto over-ride. Therefore, it all comes down to your local and state rep. Coming from the pathetic state of N.Y., Hinchey is among the worst pork violators. Let's not forget the lovable Hillary, and my personal favorite, Schumer. He's the one that's against drill here, drill now. His response to the energy solution is downright scary. A clear example of why Washington is so broken; power and greed.

Stevens, et al
The case for 12 year term limits is again affirmed. The royal congress has been out of control for decades. After stealing Social Security reserves and sending us a borrowed money "Stimulus Check"...I am at a loss for words.
They are the 9% congress because 91% need to go home...NOW.

The Cause-The Cure
Notice about 95% of the corrupt royal congress (that gets caught) has been at the public feed over 12 years...the most feared words to ANY national-state politician are TERM LIMITS. Unless the voters get really mad and make those happen, its over. I would also like a 5% salary penalty for every missed vote since they are paid to vote. No 'voice votes" either...100% on the record as individuals. Don't get me started...this was a peaceful Sunday...you should see the blunt comments I write on Repub letters wanting $$$.
As Popeye said, "I can't stands no more"...

Knew Uncle Tedley some years ago - - -
- - interviewed him on several occasions and found him to be a cold fish -- the most accurate term I could think of then, and it still applies. Congressman Don Young was a great guy, past tense. Seems he's "crossed-over to the other side" these daze. Ol' Frank Murkowski was also a nice, decent guy -- but now has been retired by the Alaska voters after apparently having a considerable drinking problem..... too bad.
I lived in Alaska for 22+ years -- some of the best ever; three kids born in Juneau; knew several governors pretty well, and a number of the legislators - - - a Great Land !!!
For the sake of clarification, that "Bridge to Nowhere" was actually a great idea when initiated, BUT, like so many, the planners' exaggerated plans grew, and grew -- bureaucrats screwed-up the whole enchilada - - that bridge over to Gravina made sense, Ketchikan has very limited USABLE land for future growth and Gravina was a viable answer......
BUT, the dumbies designed TWO spans, first to Pennock Island, where the folks didn't want one, then over to Gravina itself.
What had been a pretty decent idea before became a joke. So, a couple little ferries to the airport continue to serve Gravina, and Ketchikan has no room to grow........

change will not come from the top down,
It must come from the bottom up. Remember your local politicians when voting - how long has your city council person been in office? Your local state representative? Term limits there will make it easier to remove the career politicians. This is not public service, it is self serving greed. I have been a voter for almost 40 years and have yet to cast a vote for Senator Byrd for a number of reasons. My vote is only one of many in this state. Would that a whole lot of others in WV vote him and Rockefeller out of office. There is no shortage of other career politicians who are waiting to fill their shoes.

how much pork is good pork ??
Let's not forget he served the Republican Party as well as himself and his constituents with government funded largess. My own republican rep Roy Blunt which I call the Prince of Pork barrel gets rave reviews from people who are too blind to see or smart enough to understand that republican pork barreling is just as wasteful as democrat pork barreling. The beauty of those that are too blind to see the waste from there own political party.
One can NOT leave out political party affiliation out of this argument because he is just as much entrenched into the system by political party as he is an individual

Doug,
go ahead and vote Libertarian. But here's a bulletin: They ain't gonna win! Yeah, I know -- It'll send a message. I agree the dems & repubs are porkers, but I have to live in the real world. At the moment, pork is about 4th on my list of worries. My #1 concern is who is going to replace the one, probably two, possibly three supreme court justices over the next 4 to 8 years. We presently have a precariously thin 5-4 majority to the conservative side. If Obama is elected, we'll have a liberal court for the next 40 to 50 years. If that happens, pork will be the least of our worries.

Taking back our country!
First of all...everyone who is posting on this particular board is already united in the quest to make America a better country. Please, let's NOT have any in-fighting, folks. My Marine son will redeploy to Iraq in just a few short weeks and I will be "fighting the fight" back home while he's following his "big-oil" Chief Executive's orders. MY ideas for what needs to be accomplished are pretty simple...seeing them come to fruition will be the hard part. We need: LINE ITEM VETO, TERM-LIMITS for ALL positions of power including our very disappointing "Supreme(?)" Court, elimination of the TWO-PARTY system, ACCOUNTABILITY and VISIBILITY and abolition of Congress' personal retirement plan (THEN Social Security WILL be "fixed") and (last but not least) the STRIPPING of ALL entitlements for ANY elected official found guilty of breaking the law and the public's trust while in office. PERIOD.

America first ?
I'd like to know which politicians put America. What these skunks care about most is the next election and what they have to do to win it. so they put themselves first.
Second is party. They want to keep their party in the majority. Or if in the minority how to get enough members of their party elected so they can become the majority party. Nothing is more onerous to these hacks than being in the minority.
Third, if they have any time left after passing resolutions designating National Apple Week and Black History Month, etc. They might do something beneficial to America but this happens most often by accident.
The only hope we have is a clean sweep. Vote them out in November.
DON'T VOTE FOR INCUMBENTS !!!!

Linda, you wrote...
"Please, let's NOT have any in-fighting, folks."

I liked your post, but don't you think the swipe at Bush is "in-fighting?" Does your son really think he's fighting for "big oil?" Just asking?

Right on! SPEAK with your VOTE!
Thanks Overhaul...for reminding us we aren't completely impotent! I have used this "no incumbents" rule of thumb for years starting with local elections and going all the way to the top positions. ONE EXCEPTION of course...DO vote for those tiny few elected officials who DO care. (I am extremely proud of the track record of my Illinois Congressman Mark Kirk and he too agree's with the need for term limits.) I think most of us agree that there is NO difference between a democrat or republican...hasn't been for years. We're just all sick of having to chose the lessor of two evils. Now here's a REAL radical thought...no one with a LAW DEGREE can run for a federal political office! :)

term limits are no solution
Just imagine an entire Congress full of lame ducks with years to cozy up to a special interest. Think about it. If a congressman knows he's out of office at a certain date (certain because district lines guaratee re-election) he's only going to have one interest in mind: what cushy job he can set up for himself for when he's out. And how is he going to set up that cushy job? By steering YOUR tax money to whoever can offer him the most. Do you really believe that the constituents are going to be on his mind, especially during that last term?

The Framers set it up so the states would be the laboratories to test concepts. If you want to see how term limits work just take a look at California. In the last 5 yrs tax revenues have increased by 40% and yet we're facing a $15BILLION shortfall this year. Do you really want to impose that on the entire nation?

In-fighting
Michigander...I didn't mean we shouldn't voice our particular opinions...just that we not snipe at EACH OTHER for having them.
My son and I believe America shouldn't be expected to be the world's babysitter but now that we are there we should try to finish what we started and not abandon the Iraqi people (like we did the Kurds).
My "big-oil" dig was a personal feeling about the integrity of our president and where HIS loyalties lie, NOT a statement of why we are in this war.

"Your Pork Barrel porker
is evil and corrupt! But mine provides jobs and investment money here."
Pretty obvious why the beat goes on. We tend to love and vote back in the crooks from our state who give us a cut while slamming the ones from your state who don't.
We can expect an end to politics as usual when there are no more usual politicians.

No Lawyers
Linda great minds seem to think alike. I've had a no lawyers in any public office for many years.
Here's another radical thought. No lawyers allowed to be judges. They can be advisers to judges but they can't deliver final judgement. People with common sense should sit on the bench. Then we would avoid some of the wacky decisions that judges make. One other thing. Juries should be empowered to make lawyers pay all court costs if they deem a lawsuit frivolous. You'll remember the McDonald's hot coffee case. A few lawyers getting stuck with the bill for frivolous court clogging cases will cut down on them significantly.

PORK
IF IT IS DONE RIGHT IT CAN BE GOOD.

Paul Jacobs & Senator Ted Stevens.
The Senate Democrats need another vote,so Ted must go. They can't defeat him at the ballot box,so once again,Democrats rely on the courts to do it for them.

Stevens has for years brought home the bacon. Lots of bacon. He kept getting elected in fair elections. Fair and square. His constituents like him.

How often do you see a liberal comumnist criticize a liberal official? Why is Paul Jacobs writing about Stevens'record? Why doesn't he make excuses to try to justify his pork barreling?

There is something wrong with Republicans. They are not loyal to their party like Democrats. Politics is a dirty game. If you don't play to win,you shouldn't join the game.

Now,Sen.Stevens may be guilty of terrible crimes. If he is, he has lots of company. Since he has been investigated, many more senators and representatives should also be. Especially Democrats. They are so much better at committing crimes.

crooks in congress
only when the public gets tired of congress and their irresponsible spending. Pork barrel spending while unconscionable pales next to entitlement spending.

It is long past time when congress gets the right to set up govt agencies that once set up not only never die, but grow their budgets yearly.

The war on poverty has taken some $44 trillion with no end in sight. Only when we get rid of bog spending congressmen will the countries budget woes come under control

But it seems that only the public can take the matter in hand and vote out the various bums and thieves that once in washington become part of the problem. We need some solutions. Perhaps getting rid of stevens and murtha are the perfect place to start

Ascendency to royalty
I’m afraid that the public has not looked deeper into this phenomenon. Our elected officials are elevating them selves to celebrity status, almost to royalty. This is too disturbing to me. When those that are supposed to be servants of the people feel they are above the people and are not accountable to them; that in it self is alarming. The real danger is that the people are becoming very disgruntled and unhappy. This causes dissention to the extent that the two party-system is splintering. When that happens a small group that happens to be larger than the others can take control of the government and the country will go down a path that can not help its own destruction.

One Senator, One term
One congressman, one term. Thus eliminating the favors one owes to get re elected.

One bill in congress. One subject. Amendments can only be of the same subject matter. No more pork barrels. If a senator wants to fund a pet project, let him make it a bill and have it discussed by his peers. No votes for promises. I'll vote for yours if you vote for mine. Isn't that called bribery? But who cares. Certainly not congress. They love it.

One senator, one term.

Who is willing to nominate a new candidate at the republican convention. Newt, Rudy, Fred, Mitt. How about a real Republican. Not a Ted Kennedy kissing Amnesty supporter.

Nominate a new candidate..

Delusions
I hate to break it to you - but there will be no term limits in your life time. Meaning - you better stop pretending that it will happen, and find something else to talk about that "might" happen.

Then, you say your vote has power. That's old school from a previous time. Your states, which 50 years ago raised and spent as much tax money as Washington, have lost most power, and now spend only about 15% or so, while Washington spends the other 85%. Rather than excercising control over much of your life through your state legislature, you now each have 1 vote out of 300 million people.

Nothing said on this board will happen. And those who talk about the Supreme Court fail to see that the court will solve none of this. After all, they are the ones who reinforced it all along the way - for the better part of 200 years. Oh, it'll give you a reason to trundle down to the voting booth - but it will change nothing.

What's So Bad with a Little Graft?
I don’t understand why the Justice department is so intent on smearing a great and trusted public servant such as Senator Stevens. He is a man who has devoted his entire life to public service. Because of this, he has never had the opportunity to make the millions that his contemporaries in private industry have made. All he ever got was his stingy public salary.

Come on people, cut the guy some slack. So what if he took a little graft here and there.

Doesn’t he deserve it?

@Linda
If you don't mind, I'd like to take exception to one of your statements.

-Not- everyone posting on townhall, not even everyone posting in this thread, is necessarily part of the solution. At the time you had posted, there was already a post by Robert (under the identity of Ranger29), one of the local site trolls. From what I've seen, Robert (and the few I've noticed like him) don't seem to care so much about the real problems, as about belittling those who are trying to work through them. I will acknowledge that Robert's one-sentance post doesn't seem to be going into the normal belittling I've seen of him elsewhere, for which I'm grateful, but I'm not sure it's offering anything of substance either.

Otherwise, I think you made some excellent points.

@WAY Down South
"Doesn't he deserve it?"

No, and I seriously hope you're being sarcastic and/or facetious.

Ender
I have no doubt that my little lampoon is a fairly accurate statement of how Bridge-To-Nowhere thinks.

The “I’m due” attitude is what infuriates the most.

Telecomuting congress
Term limits are as Nam pointed out highly unlikely. But something that is achievable would be electronic legislature. Set up each senator/congressman with a computer tied to a secure network and let them work from home – in their district. That way at least those who vote for them can monitor and have access to them instead of all the lobbyists in DC.

I strongly recommend that we regroup
Let's face it. Most Republicans are identical to most Democrats. They are virtually all repugnant statist demogogues. Ron Paul is the halfway decent exception to the rule, but he's old and frail, and failed to switch to 3rd party and run as a Libertarian and win/spoil the presidency. So much for real "Hope" -we're now left with Obama's (and Ted Stevens') version of "Hope" (marxism).

Stevens is a parasite from a state of rugged individualists. ...Unless you count the residents of Anchorage, since most of them work for the Federal Government. The Fed has recently barricaded the open shooting ranges south of Anchorage, on "Fedgov land" (stolen land).

It's Wyoming or bust if you want your freedom.
