Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Barack Obama's answers have a way raising more questions. Consider a few he offered during his White House press conference Tuesday evening:

He said his administration's economic program is already showing results because housing sales have increased at last. But economists offer a different reason. To quote a story in that day's paper: "Sales of previously owned homes in the U.S. unexpectedly increased in February as record foreclosures pushed prices down and lured first-time buyers into the market." Which is the way a free market is supposed to work. The lower prices go, the more buyers may appear.

Can the president really believe this first, hopeful sign of a turnaround in housing is his doing rather than the market's? It's a function of something called the law of supply and demand. Surely he hasn't repealed that one by executive order yet.

"We're doing everything we can to reduce the deficit," the president assured his listeners while proposing to increase it. His budget projects a total of $9.3 trillion -- that's trillion with a capital T -- in deficit spending over the next decade.

The figure is from the Congressional Budget Office, which is the honest, nonpartisan and independent source in these matters. But the White House says its deficits will amount to "only" $2.3 trillion over the next 10 years. Clearly its source is the well-known Rosie Scenario, every president's best friend when it comes to budgeteering. Miss Rosie may not have the best of records when it comes to economic prognostication, but every administration seems to rely on her.

Under this budget, government spending would account for more than 28 percent of the total economy this year -- the highest share since the Second World War. But the president says he's doing everything that can be done to reduce the deficit. Even more impressive, he said it with a straight face.

If you believe that one, here's another: The president said his plan to reduce tax exemptions for charitable giving will have no effect on the donations that nonprofits depend on for their good works. Those who run philanthropies tend to have a different opinion. They also tend to know their business.

And the president is as angry as anybody about those bonuses handed out to the suits at AIG who left the company (and a good part of the American economy) a wreck. One reporter wanted to know why, if he was so angry, he'd waited till public outrage mounted before expressing his own. "It took us a couple of days" to react, he explained, "because I like to know what I'm talking about before I speak."

Good line, but not a very credible one. Does anybody believe that this president would have raised Cain about these bonuses if the American public hadn't done so first? He brings to mind the leader of the French Revolution who demanded to know where the mob was going so he could lead it.

This president, you'll be glad to know, is for expanding educational opportunities for American children. Unless, of course, they happen to be poor kids in Washington, D.C., who are attending private schools of their choice through a voucher program he's just killed -- with an enthusiastic assist from a Democratic Congress.

How dare these uppity urchins want to go the kind of schools the Obamas send their own girls to! Naturally, he didn't mention that little matter in his press conference. Sometimes the most telling thing about a presidential press conference is what a president doesn't tell us.

But, no matter, our president's answers puzzle only if one takes them seriously. If you just lean back and let his pleasant voice wash over you in rhythmic waves, like the sound of easy-listening music coming from a radio someone has left on in the corner of a room, it can really be quite soothing. Only if you try to find a meaning in his words, or attempt to figure out the logic of his positions, does Barack Obama's smooth delivery begin to sound hollow at the core.

The trick is not to pay too much attention on these occasions. This president sounds just fine if you'll only put your mind in idle. What did G.K. Chesterton say about Times Square when he first glimpsed the Great White Way? "What a glorious garden of wonder this would be, to anyone who was lucky enough to be unable to read." Watching the presidential press conference Tuesday evening would have been an uplifting experience if only one weren't trying to make sense of what he was actually saying.

Watermellon Child
Ferraro was right last year when she said he was an empty suit.

The only reason he is where he is, is the color of his skin.

This guy is so far under his paygrade it is unbelievable.

Easy Listening President???
If you really want to learn what any President is saying, or for that matter, not saying, read the speech instead of listening to it.

Works every time; I never listen to the speeches.

So What's New?
He said nothing beautifully throughout the campaign. "By their fruit ye shall know them." I think the fruit is pretty rotten.

Don
"water melon child"; very constuctive and intelligent. you are surely a credit to your base.

Unbelievable!
This jug-eared clown is the biggest liar to ever hold the office, I hope very temporarily. He makes Clinton look good which I would never have believed. It is my fervent hope that many of the brain dead morons who voted for him are feeling remorse for what they've done. I just hope we can survive.

A very dangerous empty suit
This explains a lot:

Mr. Greenberg
Oh! NOW you tell us.

Putting paid to the Sixties
The only good that will come of this michegoss is that it will finally put paid to the Sixties, as the people who have been bleating the lyrics to Lennons Imagine for the past 40 years see the fruits of their imagination rolling down the mountainside in a big avalanche of disaster.

As we told them in 1968, that trick never works. Now they get a chance to find out for themselves.

Brother, you asked for it. Enjoy it.

I hate to say it but I think some are
going to be fooled. I was dead against O but I am listening and watching. The man has a way of bringing people around in high level meetings. The bankers that met yesterday went in upset and came out comfortabel. The same goes for foreign and even Republicans. Give your hard feelings a rest and wait. Who knows?

Charitable Giving
Obama consulted with Biden to determine if the reduce tax deduction would effect charitable giving...Biden answered.. Mr President, I will continue to give my usual amount. So no, it will have no effect at all.

obama has to put down . . .
the crack pipe. He made a comment that there were not enough electricians for his new energy projects. At this time, there are 800 out of work electricians in one local in Michigan. Looks like he is "stuck on stupid".

Mentally Ill
Obama refused to release his health records during the campaign for a reason -- he is dangerously mentally ill -- a psychotic narcissist who most likely has a drug dependence problem. If he says it you know it isn't true . . .transparency means I want it done and that's all you need to know . . .Americans are being told there is nothing they can do. Don't believe it or that will be true. Congress is a cesspool of incompetent and unprincipled political accidents. TERM LIMITS and a house cleaning are in order. Pelosi and Reid are disgraceful.

Tabatha 917
When the right uses name calling like the left...you protest...

I'm white and I eat a lot of watermelon...so give me a break. What's your point?

Obama's speaking
Am I the only one who is not mesmerized by the so called dulcet tones of Obama? I keep reading that he is a marvelous speaker who has a way with calming words etc. From the beginning I have perceived him as speaking with a clipped or staccato way, not congenial, not soothing, not easy and not convincing. I was a speech teacher for years, and I would have given him a C on delivery. He has a grating voice. I think that people are reading something into him that is not there. They like what he says, which is fine, but they don't realize that he is petulant and irritating. That is my take. Anyone else feel that way? Am I alone in this? Signed Speech teacher

A Brutal Ideologue
The difference between President Obama and former President Bush is that although Bush was a clumsy speaker we always felt he was an honest, compassionate man. Obama is a better speaker but uses words and rhetoric to conceal his true intentions and the impression is that he is not honest, but a brutal ideologue who will accomplish his goals no matter what the cost in resources and pain and suffering.

He reminds me of the famous Edith Piaf song, "Je ne regrette Rien"--"I Regret Nothing."

I wish a reporter had asked

Obombo why he has spent almost a million bucks in legal fees to keep the public from viewing his birth certificate.

" Mr. President, if you have nothing to hide regarding your birth certificate, why are you hiding it?"

Speaking Truth to Power
Teeny, I agree with you. To me, his speeches are "words, just words" thrown out into the ether in search of a coherent thought or message. When Ronald Reagan, after years of acting and being a General Electric spokesman, delivered a speech you knew he had revised it a number of times and really believed in it. I've never got that feeling from Obama's speeches. There is always an undercurrent running in my mind, "What does he really think?"

Reagan was the best political speaker in my lifetime. Rush Limbaugh is the best off-the-cuff speaker today, bar none. His speech at the CPAC Conference just blew everybody away.

Obama a great orator?
Obama is not a brilliant speaker... but he does read rather well.

Good quote
"Sometimes the most telling thing about a presidential press conference is what a president doesn't tell us." Greenberg also might have added: and what questions a fawning Washington Press Corp didn't ask. They are just as shallow as Obama.

Obama's Speaking
I agree with Teeny from Utah that Obama's speaking ability is lacking. Obama comes off to me as someone who is condescending and thinks he knows better than you on how to live your life.

for Teeny
So you were a speech teacher? How would you have rated George W. Bush in his press conferences?

Just curious.

Speech
George would have gotten a B in syntax but an A in warmth and connection, and an all over grade of B-. I did not grade all of his speeches, nor have I all of Obama's. I have better things to do. I also look for sincerity and honesty. I am amazed how Obama can contradict himself in one sentence. He certainly has a way with words, and is very clever. He is a politician and that is what he does. I do not like to hear his voice, as it is condescending, intimidating and not pleasant. Speech Teacher

Hey, Chuck, YaGottaBeTOLD?
"Mr. Greenberg
Oh! NOW you tell us."
What is Mr. Greenberg "telling" you that was not said by critical thinkers during the campaign? Interesting how you appear to get snarky at someone else for not "telling us" when the transparency of your blame-shifting says ONLY one thing: I am too much a follower to have bothered to listen to all sides BEFORE voting let alone to have tried to think for yourself when you and the mob were punching the air with signs of "hope and change." (Try to note, as an educational exercise, how my word 'signs' here has two meanings. If you can.)
You, and much of the press, appear to perceive only one meaning in a word and do not distinguish between words and things.
Now I'm telling you.

B.O. the Serial Liar
The pretender is very manipulative and deceiving. It is a slap in the face of every citizen. Where's the outrage?

Posted this right after the election: Don’t underestimate the pretender. If B.O. did not demonstrate an iota of qualifications during the campaign, he certainly is a master at self-promotion, image-making, and the manipulation of the cretin MSM with all kinds of smoke and mirrors antics.

REPUBLICANS
Every single Republican in Congress should stand in unison and protest the absurdity of the passing of legislation that hasn't been read or vetted. Every Republican (Democrats can join in) should plan a public protest against Reid and Pelosi -- IF our REPUBLICAN leaders can't do this no one can and when criticized about not being "bi-partisan" respond "You bet." DON'T be a party to this nonsense and suicide spending - $5B to ACORN? WAKE UP!

tj
I think Obama was refering to expanding the power grid. As someone who has never run anything in the real world except a big kool-aid stand, he doesn't realize that the high tension lines that make up the grid are installed by utility construction crews not electricians.

Get on board
Write your reps and tell them you'll vote against them unless... Then support a consumption tax (Fair Tax Bill). It's our only chance. The wagon riders are winning.

Charity=Grant$
The higher tax (lower exemption) on charitable donations WILL affect grant money being supplied by philanthropic institutions to suuport the Arts. Many artists rely on grant money, which is raised in part by donations. The fabric of our culture is being attacked by politicians who DO NOT UNDERSTAND economics or how our system works,Period.

Statist Robot
When I was gainfully employed, I used to write speeches for the president of my organization. I was certainly nowhere near the caliber of Peggy Noonan, who wrote some of Reagan's best speeches but realized it's not just the speech but the speaker who can deliver an above average speech. You have to communicate passion and emotion where it will have the best effect. Obama is too cool, perhaps a very cold man, as some have described him. The best analogy I can think of to describe Obama as a speaker is he is a typical apparatchik. He knows he has his cult hypnotized and doesn't have to exert himself. Like a robot, when the words are poured into him he will repeat them with formalized gestures. He doesn't connect with his audiences like Sarah Palin does. Her audiences instantly get it: that this is a real loving, compassionate human being. Obama is a statist robot, constantly repeating mantras of a socialist, Communist brainwashing.

Truly a Manchurian Candidate who was elected President, thanks to his mother.

Out in space
Anyone who listens to BO and believes what he spews forth needs to have their head examined. He is arrogant and mocks everything that makes sense. He speaks down to people and he thinks he is witty and clever, lookout BO people are really getting to know the real you. I agree with Teeny he has an irritating voice,he is a smug and annoying person. people will, I hope come to their senses and see what they have done.

Obama's Plan
Obama is skillful in telling what the listener wants to hear or what sounds good. Reality is a totally different matter.

Why? He needs voters for his re-election. He is building a majority constituency who will re-elect him under any circumstances. ACORN and its government billions will help see to that.

Charities will be given government grants, not private donations. He will reward charities/non-profits that comply with his view of the world.

We all will comply, in the end, to survive.

Study the Institute for Policy Studies for Obama's real views.

THE LAST SOCIALIST DISASTER
Obama is a dangerous man struck deaf, dumb and blind by the socialist idea. It is the source of his silly smile, the source of his smug arrogance, the source of his certainty, license to lie and false self-confidence. Outside this idea his life has no purpose, value or meaning. Outside this idea he has no truth, reality or moral integrity; outside there's only darkness, bleakness and despair, a broken, imperfect, suffering world lost in illusion, lost to all hope, lost to redemption and the radical idea. A world of injustice, poverty and war waiting to be transformed, waiting for Obama, the deaf, dumb and blind, the great socialist hope, the last of his kind-the final tragedy in the history of utopian disasters ready to unfold.

Robert 11:04 AM
The emphasis was on NOW; not "tell".

Obama's speeches
I usually don't listen to them. I prefer to read the text, because it is factual and not effected by the delivery or the body language.
Actors can act. But text is just there and the ideas can be thought about without any coloring by the persona or delivery of the words.
One has time to refer to what has been said or written before and it is easier to detect the internal contradictions. Lowering the deficit by enormous spending? Reads like something from "Alice in Wonderland" or from "1984." It has taken longer for us to get to 1984 than George Orwell predicted.

Google "Neuro Linquistic Programming".

There are some who claim he's a master at it. I'd be interested in your take on it.

Chuck, NLP could be it...
Interesting info. on Neuro Linquistic Programming. Sounds as if that is what a manipulator would use to get a hidden agenda through rather than what a legitimate leader would in order to promote openly his/her viewpoint.
Did Greenberg sometime earlier fail to tell us what he is telling us NOW...hence your emphasis on NOW rather than "tell"?

Robert
I could be wrong but I don't recall Mr. Greenberg being one of the voices warning us about Obama. I had high regards for his insighte regarding the Clintons and expected something more regarding Obama prior to the election.

Amazing
So the government monopoly wins again.
" This president, you'll be glad to know, is for expanding educational opportunities for American children. Unless, of course, they happen to be poor kids in Washington, D.C., who are attending private schools of their choice through a voucher program he's just killed -- with an enthusiastic assist from a Democratic Congress.

Ahh, gee dems your NEA illegal monolopy got er done. Way to go fascists!

Thanks for the utube link.

Obama is obviously someone's puppet on the American Presidential Stage.

To be forewarned is to be forearmed. Get ready people and do all you can to organize (I dislike that word now) and forewarn others and most of all, pray to Almighty God that we escape the clutches of Tyranny!

People Are Living In Tent Cities!
It would be just fine to sit back and listen to his soothing voice if people still had a roof over their heads and a wall plug and radio to listen to, but after 1-20-09, more people have been put into the streets through foreclosures; more soup lines closed; more charities closed down; and more money printed than every in our history without limits or boundaries going to the Wall Street casino rather than to the people as Obama made those poor African-Americans and other ethnicities and races believe and still do - that he would redistribute the wealth - and he did - he redistributed and is redistributing the wealth to his friends - and unless caught - attempts to say he's outraged - but he's not outraged nor int he real world by denying that there are increasing numbers of hurting Americans because of the corruption at the top who are treated with kid gloves and made out to be "mistakes" and forgiven as "intellectuals," which obviously means that the rest of us are criminals and stupid! I do believe they're wrong and that the American people will wake up!

Is the crisis bogus?
Where are the tent cities?
Where are the long soup lines?
Things have slowed down mightily because the Federal Government yelled "wolf" or "crisis" or something. And Goldman-Sachs has been saved and financial wizards have obtained their pound of flesh. And the net worth of George Soros went up another 1.2 billion dollars.

Maybe we should declare the end of the crisis and all would be well; people would be rehired and factories would start producing.
Of course, the Federal Government would not have been completely socialized, illegals would still be illegal, and those financially unqualified would not be able to own houses. And the Acorn people would be out of work.

RIGHT ON BROTHER GREENBERG
I MISS SAMMY DAVIS JR,EVEN SAMMY WAS MORE HUMBLE.

PAUL EASY LISTENING PRESIDENT

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY DISAPPOINTER
I get satisfaction in knowing that BO is not only disappointing those who have brains and use them.

BO will also disappoint all the "new ACORN voters" who were in it for their mortgage payment and free gas.

Words aren't enough, Barry. And being black aint enough either.

Paul hits it out of the park
I am rarely reminded anymore of how much I miss Paul's editorials since I moved out of the area his Democrat-Gazette covers, but when I am, it hurts. What a unique perspective.
