Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

A bright new president announces he's going to have the most ethical administration in American history and, even before the new has worn off, has to accept the resignations of one after another of his top appointees when their ethical lapses come to harsh light.

Sound familiar?

It should. The calendar says 2009, the new president is Barack Obama, but it could be the false political spring of 1993, when Bill Clinton seemed almost as busy undoing his appointments as he'd been making them only days before.

Something else hasn't changed much, either: The distinguished former appointees almost uniformly explain that they're stepping down not because they've shown rotten judgment and/or complete insensitivity to the simplest ethical requirements, but because paying attention to such matters would be too much of a "distraction" from the great service they have and could still render an ungrateful public. (There is no limit to the egotism of political hacks when caught in a compromising position; it's as if they actually believed all the flowery introductions they've got at civic banquets over the years.)

Just read, if you can stand it, Tom Daschle's posturing, self-serving, glossing-over and generally beside-the-point statement on his decision to withdraw his nomination as the country's next secretary of Health and Human Services. In it, he says that "if 30 years of exposure to the challenges inherent in our system has taught me anything, it has taught me that this work will require a leader who can operate with the full faith of Congress and the American people, and without distraction."

So that's what questions about ethics, probity, duty and whether a public official has ignored them all have become in our sophisticated time: just a distraction.

What a pity Mr. Daschle's 30 years of exposure to the challenges inherent in our system, not to mention inherent in being a citizen of the United States, did not teach him to report his taxes, pay them in full, and refrain from raking in the dough like a defeated majority leader of the U.S. Senate with his hand out to every special interest in sight.

At last incomplete count, the former senator had collected nearly a quarter of a million dollars in speaking fees (and he's not exactly a Winston Churchill on the platform), not counting the more than $5 million he took in as a consultant to real estate, telecommunications and energy corporations.

And the hospitals and insurers and pharmaceutical companies that would have fallen under his extensive domain as secretary of Health and Human Services.

Oh, yes, there was also the little matter of his not paying some $128,000 in back taxes on undisclosed income until his delinquencies came to light. But all that is just a distraction, to hear Mr. Daschle tell it. Just as it would have been "a distraction and delay" to delve into her ethical problems, explained Nancy Killefer, who until the day before yesterday was Barack Obama's choice for chief performance officer for the entire federal government -- a Historic First, since President Obama just created that high-sounding post.

As it turns out, Ms. Killefer hadn't paid employment taxes for her household help until that same government whose performance she was going to monitor sued her for the back taxes. Chutzpah, thy name is Nancy Killefer.

Shades of Zoe Baird, one of Bill Clinton's successive picks as attorney general of the United States back in 1993. It turned out Ms. Baird hadn't paid her household staff's Social Security taxes, either.

There are few things lower than shorting the help, but somehow our presidents seem to find nominees who manage to do just that, and whose excuses when they are caught are even more annoying than the original offense.

To quote one aghast reader who took the trouble to e-mail me after Ms. Killefer's little problem hit the news: "Too bad someone who does wrong can't just come out and say they were wrong and apologize, rather than blame it on the unnamed critics who would rightfully criticize them for this.

"They don't seem to understand," Devoted Reader went on, "that when they don't pay the payroll taxes for their domestic help, they are not only depriving many other Americans of the advantages of funding Social Security and Medicare (which certainly need the money), but they are denying the lower-income people who work for them the ability to receive benefits one day. It's not fair, especially to millions of Americans who do the right thing by paying their taxes."

Beyond the fiscal ramifications of this kind of dereliction, what does it say about the culture of our new elite? Didn't there used to be an unwritten code in the best households about treating the help right? Wasn't that supposed to be the test of a true gentleman. And lady.

What ever happened to our sense of noblesse oblige, if anyone even uses the term any more? Once upon a time it didn't have to be used; it was simply understood. It was part of the fabric not just of the household but of society. Rank had not just its privileges but its obligations, and the best people were those who lived up to them. No more.

Now to inquire about such things is just a distraction.

In all this cloud of Clintonesque deja vu, there was one refreshing whiff of candor, and that came when our still new president -- very new -- made a point of going before the television cameras and talking straight. Barack Obama, who was still standing behind his appointment of Tom Daschle 24 hours before -- "absolutely" -- had seen the (klieg) light by yesterday, and was fessing up in one television interview after another: "I'm frustrated with myself, with our team ... I'm here on television to say I screwed up."

That was the one direct, unqualified apology in this whole farce. (It's too low, and the characters too ignoble, to call this a tragedy.) How refreshing. Also clear, concise and to-the-point. The president's comment gives one hope. For apology is the beginning of humility, and humility the beginning of wisdom. The education of Barack Obama proceeds apace, and his taking responsibility for his choices indicates he may yet prove an apt pupil.

Hypocracy
I love liberal Democrats. When an ethics violation such as failure to pay taxes or hiring an illegal immigrant nanny come to light we hear such excuses as "Don't worry about it", "It's a distraction", "No big deal", "We need him/her and that's more important than ethical lapses". Can anyone say "It's the economy stupid"?

If these things happened under Bush or any other Republican administration we'd never hear the end of it from the Democrats and the MSM and all such nominees would be forced to withdraw.

Ok so it's not the end of civilization as we know it but for one Obama needs to improve his vetting process. And for two I find it ironic that Democrats want the rest of us to pay more taxes but can't seem to pay their own.

I mean come on how hard is this? I do my own taxes which are not complex but I suspect most of these people can afford to hire a good tax accountant or attorney to help them. It sounds like plain lazyness or a "don't care" attitute to me.

the messiah and his appointees
looks like the messiah just looked for people who told him their shared his vision of implimenting socialism.

But like bubba he accepted their word they had no skeletons in their closet and just as stupidly as bubba the messiah used the empty promises of ethical administration.

But no real shock concerning the messiah. His lack of experience in working with any who don't buy into his world view of black victim hood and the accolades of his followers who bought into the nonsense that his coming would make the world and the planet a better place'

The problem with being naive is it doesn't contribute to being realistic about anything and what can be accomplished.

The messiah thought all he had to do was show up and the country would fall over in a dead faint just waiting for the coming miracles

The Change We're Getting...
It looks like in the early going, President Obama is making the Grant, Harding and Clinton administrations seem like the most ethical in our nation's history. I guess his strategy did work to get his AG, Sect of the Treasury and Sect of State past the Senate under the premise that they couldn't block them all. Maybe if we'd had an opposition party before last week, we might have gotten the change we really needed.

"CHANGE
we can all believe in." I never believed it.

Not too late.
I don't see why the criminal AG, tax cheat Sec. Treasury and even Hildabeast couldn't be charged and indicted for their past crimes. They should be locked up and the keys should be thrown away.

One Sided Account
It takes either chutzpah or selective memory to write so self-righteously about ethical lapses among Democrats without so much as a mention of some truly spectacular ethical lapses in the other party. Remember Randy "Duke" Cunningham? Jack Abramoff? The disgusting "crony capitalism" that marked the Bush administration?

Ethical,My Eye !!!
It is getting easier to name the appointees of Obama who do not have ethical problems. So many of them do. Yesterday Panetta and Solis have been fingered .

What can you expect when 'The Man' brings Chicago Type politics to the White House? That's all he's familiar with. He thinks it is Kosher to be a lawbreaker. Just like him.

Not quite straightforward apology
But then THE ONE went on to say that he and his team need to review the vetting process, implying the Daschle affair sprung from a vetting glitch. It did not. Obama and his people knew about Daschle's tax issues before they announced his nomination. At the same time, Obama did not take back his prior assertion that Daschle was qualified to serve and Obama's spokespeople were emphasizing that they had not asked Daschle to withdraw, implying that Obama would have stood by Daschle, contradicting the admission that doing so was a mistake as well as the vetting error implication. These people seem addicted to speaking out of both sides of their mouths.

hmmm
I wonder what Obama's definition of Ethical is?

Heck I wonder what his definition of Hypocrite is?

Correct Thinking
WASHINGTON -- February 5, 2009: Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) told nationally syndicated talk host Bill Press this morning that the recent flips of liberal Talk stations in several markets were a "disservice to the public."

Stabenow said that, in the day of the Fairness Doctrine, "you had to have balance," and continued, "I think something that requires that in a market with owners that have multiple stations that they have got to have balance -- there has to be some community interest -- balance, you know, standard that says both sides have to be heard."

Stabenow told Press that the airwaves are "dominated by one view" that "overwhelms people's opinions -- and, unfortunately, incorrectly," and said that "right-wing conservative talk hosts" are "trying to make people angry and saying all kinds of things that aren't true and so on."

When Press asked if it is time to bring back the Fairness Doctrine, Stabenow responded, "I think it's absolutely time to pass a standard." To Press' inquiry as to whether she will push for hearings in the Seante "to bring these owners in and hold them accountable," Stabenow replied, "I have already had some discussions with colleagues, and, you know, I feel like that's going to happen. Yep."

You Missed the Point
To johninoregon: You completely missed the point of this article. What is being called into account is Obama's boastful declaration that HIS administration would be more ethical than all those administrations that preceded him.

His pronouncement was, once again, a slap in the face of the Bush administration, as though this country has been held hostage over the past 8 years by a smarmy used car salesman.

Try to remember that all politicians are going to try to convince folks that they are the best and that their ideas are better than their predecessors. This line of rhetoric is universal to all parties, in the U.S. and around the world.

But it's when they make a huge point of announcing to the world that they are the one and only champion of something as sublime (and apparently rare) as high standards and ethical behaviour, then proceed to choose one unethical person after another for their staff ... well, that's when articles like Paul Greenberg's get written.

Welcome to Arkansas Mafia times 2.
With Rahm and George and James on board I doubt if the gang from Chicago can get the upper hand. Makes you wonder what the Clinton's knew about Obama--that let them get the grip they have on this administration, doesn't it?

johninoregon
Yes, I remember the names you mentioned.
I also remember they were prosecuted, not nominated for higher offices.
Are any of the Dems mentioned in the column being prosecuted? Double standard?

"Screwed up" ??? YOU BETCHA !

Paul Greenberg writes...

" Barack Obama, who was still standing behind his appointment of Tom Daschle 24 hours before -- "absolutely" -- had seen the (klieg) light by yesterday, and was fessing up in one television interview after another:

~~~
The has to be the very most impressive Presidential comment in public, EVER.
" I screwed up. "
yup. This ranks with Reagan's 'tear this wall down' quote, and JFK's 'ask not...' quote.
Yes, you screwed up, you got caught again.
'It's raining, it's pouring,
The old man is snoring.'
I had the same reservations about that apology myself; it was as vague as his campaign speeches. Was he sorry that he couldn't pull the wool over the public's eye? Was he sorry that they were outed? Was he sorry that he continued to support them even after he (and the public) knew they were tax cheats? What exactly did he "screw up" on?
Sheesh !
These are Politicians you are talking (writing) about; why is any of this news-worthy?
The attention span of Americans is about 48 hours, it seems we will never learn...
Deja Vu Deja Vu Deja Vu Deja Vu, etc.
Thank you for pointing out the obvious, Paul Greenberg.
Geesch! The only reason I visit this Website is for new twists and turns on the current "scene," written well. Greenberg, Prelutsky and Krauthammer are usually reliable. Today, no go. All three "deja vu'd."
Well, noboddy's perfect. But, geesch, all three on the same day. I guess on some days you just have to appease the beer bar crowd.
Hey, don't get me wrong, I love the beer bar. That's where I go, when I want to rant and rave, and sometimes get to "take it outside."
Used to get girls there, too. Not very good ones, but, on some days, a girl's a girl.
Hey, maybe that's it -- on some days, a column's a column, pays the rent.
I for one hope they do try to re-impose the "fairness doctrine".
I think they have no idea how much of an uproar this will cause, and I also think it's useful to remind people that their bankrupt theories can't compete unless they're forced down peoples throats.
I'm not sure if they're that stupid, but who knows?
It's 1994 in 2010 God willing!!!
Hee hee hee ha HA!! I can't WAIT to hear the cable news nutworks whine, bleat and cry about the "national tantrum" like they did after the drubbing in '94. BRING IT!! We've got a frakking army.
Soli Deo Gloria!!
Greenberg, Obama's
apology and acceptance of responsibility ia either sincere or a ploy. My money is on ploy. He has shown no acceptance of any action he can evade. When it becomes obvious he must, he switches like lightning. His ability to throw cohorts under the bus sets new standards in frequency and speed. At what point will his followers decide that he is just being himself as he does these things? How many times can he say We screwed up and not generate the opinion he is a screwup?
johninoregon 5th, 6:42pm
You are irrelevant. The Dems have the hammer, they made the promises of a cleaner more open admin. Actually, Pelosi made those promises in 06. How do you find that working out? When Bush and the CINOs were running things and they pulled some rotten move, what was your attitude when Left wing crooks like Kilpatrick and Kool Kash Jefferson were used as defenses? Didn't work then and doesn't work now. 2 wrongs don't make a right. They don't make Wright right either, as a matter of fact.
You can not defend criminals in government by citing malfeasance in the opposing party.
I screwed up
a "direct, unqualified apology"--HARDLY! Did you see the smug look on his face as he said that?!?! It is much harder to lie with our bodies than our words. BHO is no different than an unrepentant little kid who got caught doing wrong and who has been caught so often that he know that the requirement to get himself off the hook is some version of either "I'm sorry" or "I screwed up."
Well now what?
Now that the Savior is in office bite him. If all had listened to him, he would not have been elected. He told us what he would do, he came from the Chicago political machine, he came from a church whose pastor spouted off against this nation.
Why now do people stand with open mouths and surprise at what he is doing/attempting to do?
Sometimes what you get is not really what you intended when asking. He told us he was bringing change. Now you are seeing the change he presents. I read an article where this man studied how to hypnotize with his speeches. Seems it did a good job. I knew that something was wrong with his speeches. Was like a grate against my whole being. I didn't listen to him directly, just read what he said. Are you waking up yet?
Jim, no I and most conservatives are
not surprised. We shouted from the rooftops about "the One" and what it would do to our country. The MSM simply drowned us out and refused to print any truth whatsoever about this fraud.
As to what the Clintoons have on Obama to get this much power, they know of his birth of course!
.
"Why now do people stand with open mouths and surprise at what he is doing/attempting to do?"
Hey guy, you're on townhall. What kind of response did you expect? 65% Approval is actually very good. More than 3 times the approval rating of your savior.
Collins, Specter & Snowe just SOLD OUT..
BREAKING NEWS:
Senators Collins, Specter & Snowe just sold the United States out. Calling them "RINOs" is an insult to RINOs.
http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D966EEQ80&show_arti cle=1
WASHINGTON (AP) - With job losses soaring nationwide, Senate Democrats reached agreement with KEY REPUBLICANS Friday night on an economic stimulus measure at the heart of President Barack Obama's plan for combatting the worst recession in decades. "The American people want us to work together. They don't want to see us dividing along partisan lines on the most serious crisis confronting our country," said SEN. SUSAN COLLINS of Maine, one of two GOP senators who signaled support for the bill.
Officials put the cost of the measure at $780 billion in tax cuts and new spending combined. No details were immediately available, and there appeared to be some confusion even among senators about the price tag as floor debate continued late into the night.
The agreement capped a tense day of backroom negotiations in which Senate Majority Leader HARRY REID, joined by White House chief of staff RAHM EMANUEL, sought to attract the support of enough Republicans to give the measure the needed 60-vote majority.
In addition to COLLINS, Sen. ARLEN SPECTER, R-Pa., said he would vote for the bill. Sen. OLYMPIA SNOWE, R-Maine, remained uncommitted." (cap emphasis mine)
Thanks to these three SELL-OUTS (Collins, Specter and Snowe), a few years from now, our country will be forced to default on its debt obligations.
That’ll be after hyper-inflation has destroyed the value of our currency.
These 3 Traitors have enabled the Leftocrats to BORROW nearly a TRILLION DOLLARS, and flush it down the toilet on wasteful pet pork projects.
A trillion dollars.
That’s 1,000,000,000,000.00
If any of these three American Traitors (Senators Collins, Specter and Snowe) happen to be YOUR Senator, please, FIRE THEM.
Al Capone killed many people
IF only he'd paid his taxes. He maybe wouldn't have died in prison.
