Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Looking over Barack Obama's first appointees to his Cabinet, I get this weird premonition: I could yet wind up leading the cheers for the Obama administration.

I know, it's early yet. The president-elect is, after all, only president-elect, still a couple of months from Inauguration Day. But hope rises. It was buoyed when the next president introduced his Security Team, which used to be called a War Cabinet when the language was more direct. He spoke of his appointments to head the State and Defense departments as a New Beginning, borrowing a catch phrase from the Reagan Years. It doesn't look very new -- the faces flanking him last Monday were mighty familiar -- but it's a strong beginning. Consider:

As secretary of state, the country is to have a tough-minded woman with a long record of engagement in the political wars of her time, and the scars to show for it. Hillary Clinton's appointment is one more sign that this young president isn't afraid to pick top-level advisers with strong minds, and voices, of their own.

This is the same Hillary Clinton who challenged some of Sen. Obama's airy foreign policy pronouncements during the vigorous race for their party's presidential nomination, at one point questioning the wisdom of his rash promise to meet with Iran's nutcase of a president without preconditions. The lady is very much in touch with reality, which is what a secretary of state needs to be.

Barack Obama himself seems to have learned a lot since the early days of his campaign; he has steadily backed away from his talk of an arbitrary deadline for pulling American troops out of Iraq. Once he's inaugurated as president, the commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces may yet bring himself to use the word "victory" in connection with the valor and accomplishments of those troops. For it is their success, and the vision of their commander -- Gen. David Petraeus -- that will allow the next president to shift his attention to other fronts in the war on terror, like Afghanistan, where things need to improve, too.

With the mantle of presidential responsibility settling on his shoulders, Barack Obama now talks about conferring with his generals before doing anything hasty in Iraq, which is a good idea. The trick, of course, will be to confer with the right ones or, if he can't find another Petraeus, appoint one. Mr. Lincoln had to go through a whole series of commanders before he found his Grant.

The success of the Surge, and the formal agreement with the Iraqi government to hand over control of the war to the Iraqis themselves in orderly stages, opens the way for American forces to come home in honor rather than fleeing in haste, leaving a vivisected nation and a raging civil war behind. Which was Joe Biden's "solution" to the challenge Iraq posed. But even he seems to have seen the folly of that course, or at least he never mentions it any more -- and has removed all traces of it from his Web site. The man does have some shame after all.

The incoming president will inherit an increasingly free, stable and democratic Iraq when he comes into office. Saddam Hussein is gone and his aggressive dictatorship with him. He will not be around to challenge the next administration. American troops and our Iraqi allies stand on the verge of victory thanks -- dare anyone say it? -- to the utter determination of the president whom Barack Obama criticized so bitterly during the campaign.

It would be nice if the next secretary of state showed a little humility. Her confirmation hearing would be the perfect occasion for Hillary Clinton to apologize to Gen. Petraeus for her snide comment that it would take "a willing suspension of disbelief" to think his strategy would work in Iraq. As it did. Even more quickly than its supporters had hoped. The sight of an apology coming from Hillary Clinton might shock, but it would clear the air. And really be a new beginning.

Ms. Clinton will be bringing a lot of baggage to her new job, most of it named Bill. But the word is that Mr. Clinton has agreed to separate his own suspect web of international deals from his spouse's new responsibilities by coming clean about all those mysterious contributions to his foundation. And taking a number of other steps to avoid conflicts of interest for his spouse. He's to start acting with the kind of circumspection a former president should exercise. We'll see.

Another familiar -- and assuring -- face on the Obama team will be Robert Gates, the current secretary of defense who continues to oversee the rebuilding of the country's armed forces from its Rumsfeldian low. Mr. Gates, too, objected to any arbitrary deadline for leaving/abandoning Iraq when that idea was all the rage. It will be good to have his steady hand still on the tiller, at least for a while.

Some policies in Washington don't need a new beginning so much as a good follow-through, and Secretary Gates has earned the respect of all who have watched him restore the morale and reinvigorate the mission of the country's armed forces.

The foreign policy and defense team the president-elect now has announced, like the economic team he announced the week before, assures. He's coming down from the clouds to solid ground.

For now I'm not going to think about which teacher union-approved educantist Barack Obama might name as his secretary of education, the better to hasten the continuing deterioration of the country's public schools -- the kind of schools the Obamas would never choose for their own children.

But enough of that. Why spoil a good day? Let us instead pray for our next president's continued success and good health, especially when remembering who his vice president is to be.

Fight for title of First Black President
Don King to promote Bill V Barack title fight and we got the Don King interview. http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com

Look beyond the department heads
The real damage will come as a result of all the liberals Obama will apppoint to the thousands of positions opening up in the federal government.

Joyful Time
This Christmas is going to be especially sweet. I did not vote for the man--but I'm fully behind him now. A part of me has been for him all along. He will be, like Lincoln and Theodore and Reagan--one of the great ones. It's quite possible that W will also be known as one of the great ones.

Hey Greenberg, Ole Boy
Through a pink straw or a baby cup? "Looking over Barack Obama's first appointees to his Cabinet, I get this weird premonition: I could yet wind up leading the cheers for the Obama administration." The only one so far is Gates but a couple of days ago he said that he might be able to speed up the withdrawal. So, that takes care of your SecDefense. The others, just update the Klintoon cabinet. Who put the billing records on the table in my room? Will the "new" Secretary of State be able to dig into the FBI files from where she sits? Greenberg, a Manchurian writer? I've never liked your words before and this one is another nose dive. Is your flip-flopping the "Change" we need? "It would be nice if the next secretary of state showed a little humility." Hillary showing humility -- wrong world Greenberg. Vicious and devious, are the proper adjectives and there is no reason to believe otherwise. Let's see, next in line for the emergency president beyond the Prez and Vice -- holy smoke -- t'would be Hitlery.

It's official
Any Townhall columnist who dares to paint Barack Obama as anything other than a disciple of Satan invites the wrath of TH posters with such charming characterizations as "a Manchurian writer."

A prediction:
Mr. Greenberg will not be the last pundit, who has failed to articulate a clear conservative political philosophy, to be enamoured of the implausible candidate particularly annointed by the media to be our next president.

"It is right that there be divisions among you that those who are genuine amongst you might be recognized." St. Paul

Come on
Please... He picks a Treasury team that played a large role in the collapse of the financial industry. Instead of going after people at JP Morgan or Bank of America who weathered the storm, we get more of the crooks who cared more about their bonus' and stock options. The only thing that changed is it's a democrat and not a republican in charge.

we'll see
My gut tells me Obama will be interested in being viewed as a success rather than a black Jimmy Carter. We can only hope that he governs closer to the center than his campaign promised .

curious pattern
There is something odd in this idea that Biden's three part division of Iraq has been repudiated. I didn't know at the time if it was a good idea, and still don't. But of course one of those divisions, the Kurds, is a reality. Although the tricky issue there of the border has still not been addresses. The other part of the plan concerns how the Sunnis in the oil-poor parts of the country will be integrated into the country. And the answer is that we still have no idea.

We do know that we won't impose such a solution. But the Iraqis may eventually do so, and they may do so through a reborn civil war. So far our staying in Iraq has only put off the serious decisions in Iraq, it has not provided a period for dividing them (which people with long memories may remember was the point of the surge).

Not behind Obama now-maybe never!
Don't trust someone elect who has sealed so many documents and made them unavailable to the people of the U.S. We demand that he release the vault birth record or suffer the consequences of further dividing our nation by playing his cat and mouse game. What's the big deal unless he's got something to hide? This is a no brainer folks. Is he already showing his true intentions by disrespecting the Constitution? I can't think that there's any good that will come of that, can you?RELEASE THE VAULT BIRTH RECORD!
RELEASE THE VAULT BIRTH RECORD!
RELEASE THE VAULT BIRTH RECORD!
ARE YOU A MAN OR A MOUSE?????
DO THE RIGHT THING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VP
As BHO is not the president elect until Dec 15, if (God forbid) he dropped dead today, Joe Biden would not be next in line for the presidency. According to the Constitution, the person who received the next highest amount of votes during the election, John McCain, would be next in line to be sworn in. Joe Biden would still be VP. I'm not sure if this would be a better situation than our current one or not. Afterall, McCain is a Democrat disguised as a Republican.

Border fence
Does Napolitano have a bad attitude? As Governor
she said "if we build a 50ft fence they will bring a 51ft ladder". Will she stop the Border fence?

Hope Rises
The conservative media are falling over themselves lavishing Obama with praise over his stellar picks for Cabinet positiions. Obama is a community organizing socialist who has not even taken office yet. Hillary as SOS was the worst pick of all. She and her husband walk around in a permanent cloud of money-grubbing corruption and she is a proven liar.

Paul Greenberg may be well advised to hold his tongue until Obama takes office. Reality will set in quickly.

Hold those cheers!
I think Mr. Greenberg is letting his hope and optimism get the better of his judgement. Yes, Obama is appointing "centrists" as his cabinet secretaries. What of the second and third level appointees who actually execute policy? Not only that, those are the ones who traditionally burrow into the bureaucracy at the end of presidential terms (as Bush appointees are now doing).

I remember an answer from Obama during the campaign when asked about how he made people accept him. His answer was along the lines of "smile, walk slowly & don't make any sudden moves until they get used to you". I suspect that these early days constitute the moving slowly phase of Obama's tenure in office. I don't even want to think about what might happen when he feels confident enough to persue the ideas he espoused during the campaign.

I can only hope that daily contact with the reality of life in the Oval Office brings some humility and sanity to the man, so that he leaves off his dream to remake the US after his image.

lon
very perceptive post.

the kurds are separated already, the sunnis have total control of an-bar and the shia get the rest.

the fight will be over the oil money once they are left to their own devises but that is not our fight.

it was evident early, i thought, that a weak central government for oil and such and then the three areas semi-autonomous was the way it would end up.

Stephanie
That is an intersting point you raise about who becomes president if the president dies before the electoral college votes. But I am not sure where you get your answer from.

It would seem that the electoral college would still vote for president. And assuming the democrats could get organized that they would vote for either Biden because he is the VP pick or Hilary Clinton because she was second in the primaries, or some third consensus candidate.

There does not seem to be any reason why McCain would get the nod as the person who got the second most votes during the campaign.

This column is...
premature ejaculation. Good grief, the Community Organizer in Chief hasn't governed a single day and kudos are being delivered. Take a deep breath, Paul.

A wee bit early
Nobody will be cheering louder than I if it turns out that Obama was simply lying through his teeth to get elected, and didn't mean all the liberal things he said. If Obama really doesn't want to socialize medicine, ensure defeat in Iraq, eliminate the secret ballot, and redistribute wealth from the workers to the lazy, I'm for it! If Obama doesn't really hold us Religion-clingers in contempt, good.

However, it is way to early to start predicting this based on a handful of appointees from the Clinton years.

Why is this guy writing here...
If I want to read what an idiot thinks, I'll just open a newspaper.

Viperish Posts~
Paul, the rabid hate-filled right-wing will not be moved. Obama, they'll maintain for an eternity, is the "anti-Christ" with absolutely no redeeming virtues.

A note to the TH editors! The use of terms such as "Hiterly" and "premature ejaculation" are inexcusably offensive and just barely tolerable. However, I urge the editors to permanently ban use of the term "kool-aid" and "spew". Neither terms has any place in civil conversation.

Jim-Too

Jim-OK
Sir:: I don't think U should be out in Public by yourself if "koolaid: and spew" offend U..
And telling some of the folks who post hereabout that those words are "NONO" is likeaving a red flag at El Toro I assure U!!!
Have a GOOD DAY!!

Its really hard to understand
how Obama bringing into his admin of "change" the most corrput, incompletent group of political insiders is hopefull. These are the same people that brought on the tech collapse, and the present banking crisis. These are the people whose idea of fighting terrorism was to bomb aspirin factories in Africa and who while aiming at terrorist training camps in Aghanistan hit sheep farms in Pakistan. Who couldn't tell the difference between a Chinese embassy and a Serbian military base.

Hardly the type of people that inspire hope in the future.

Umm you sure about Hillary?
http://spectator.org/archives/2008/12/04/dont-confirm-her

Perhaps you need a refresher on just how corrupt the Clintons were Mr. Greenberg.

Hope is visa
A visa out of this country, I am not sticking around for the show the preview cause me to surrender my citizenship. I seek asylum to Japan.

B.O. SUPPORTERS SWEATING BULLETS TONIGHT
How can they not be really anxious about the Supreme Court deciding whether or not to go forward with litigation that could ultimately pop their balloon?

I wonder what the Comrade's political hacks are thinking on the eve of this? I have a feeling the MSM can't hold the story much longer.

jeffrey
blah blah blah

you have been delusional on this issue for months.

you are a nutter.

Jim - kool aid? really??
The residents of inner city south side chicago would take issue with you advocating the banning of such an important beverage. This is hte sunday morning brunch beverage of choice at reverend wright's church and Barak's election is proof that this drink works. On the other hand, your name is Jim and I understand why you have an issue with kool aid.

He's mixing Barry Aid with his reisling.
So...,Mr Greenberg, is that called a spritzer? Whut...,are you kiddin me?

I am so sorry, but your entire article is ridiculous!

Hold the confetti Mr. Greenberg. What is he going to do about abortion? What is he going to do about illegal immigration?

And hey...,supreme court judges?

I could go on but...,I think you had a couple of those Barry spritzers while you wrote this article.

Darn I was hoping
you had figured out a way to get rid of NANCY PELOSI.

I have no hope for this next 4 years. Except for the American people to wake up in two.

Hillary never did anything right when Bill was in office.

Obama said whatever he thought he needed to say to get elected. He is a man of low character. I have no reason to expect any good to come from his presidency.

Hope Rises
"Looking over Barack Obama's first appointees to his Cabinet, I get this weird premonition: I could yet wind up leading the cheers for the Obama administration."

Yes I imagine you would. Anything for the 'One'.

BARBARA WALTERS GOT NOTHING ON US
We have details on the Bill and Barack’s fight for the title of FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT. We have comments form OPRAH, JOHN TRAVOLTA, JOHN KERRY, REV. WRIGHT, REV. JESSE JACKSON, CHICAGO’S MAYOR DALEY and more. Read about it at, : http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com

Obama So Far
I am cautiously hopeful that O's administration won't be as terrifying as I once thought it would. Richardson and Hillary aren't of the ilk of Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright. But where is the left to go now? They had pinned their hopes on this guy to dismantle anything remotely traditional and realistic in the government's workings. He seems (gasp!) more centrist. May he stay safe. And if he really isn't a US citizen, can we please sweep that under the rug. I don't want Biden.

Hope Rises? Are you joking?
Hope Rises? LOL

Well, tell that to my wallet and that to the citizens of the US.

And, tell it to the soldiers that protect our security.

And, tell it to those that want our borders.

And, tell it to my children and my some day grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc.

And, tell it to all those that have lost their life savings.

And, tell it to those that fear terrorism, here and abroad.

Just because the nation elected Mr. Hope-n-Change, doesn't make us full of HOPE. Didn't we already have a President called "The Man From Hope"? I guess Obama had to one up him.

At this point in time, hope has died, but change is coming and we will not like it.
