Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The effect of the fog of war on a commander is well known. It separates him from events on the battlefield. Communication is lost or garbled, confusion reigns, and misunderstanding leads to catastrophe.

The effect of the fog of news may be less well known, but it can be just as misleading. I know. Absorbed in the endless news cycle, dazed by data, vision blurs and we cannot see the gathering signs of catastrophe all around.

Yet now and then the fog parts, and we catch a glimpse not only into current events but into ourselves. And it is frightening. Such was the effect of a story in last week's news that had to horrify readers across the country, if only for a moment before we began our holiday shopping.

The story described a crowd so eager to rush into a Wal-Mart on Long Island at 5 in the morning on Black Friday that it broke down the doors and trampled an employee to death. And then stepped right over the body to get into the store, running over other employees trying to help the downed man, and anybody else in its way, including a 28-year-old pregnant woman. The shoppers could not be bothered; they had important things to do. Like pick up a bargain.

There is a message here, a sign. About ourselves. For how many times have we mindlessly rushed through a day, pushing others aside to reaching for things that in the end are only trinkets? Like a driver risking life, limb and sanity by tearing down the highway to save a few minutes to waste later.

This story about a crowd at a Wal-Mart lifts the fog of news, and for once we see modern man, we see ourselves, clearly. They say the root of the religious impulse in man is an awareness, sudden or gradual, that something is missing in us, that we are broken, no longer whole, and desperate to be restored, to be healed by a power or grace greater than our own.

That's the story and it may be the moral of The Fall, if anyone is allowed to take it seriously in this age of the therapeutic. And we forget it at our soul's peril.

There are still such moments when an awareness of the human condition dawns, but they're rare. As Walker Percy noted years ago, whether anyone was listening or not, "most of the denizens of the present age are too intoxicated by the theories and goods of the age to be aware of the catastrophe already upon us."

But now and then our attention is caught by a dispatch from the hell within each of us. We may tell ourselves this is a story about the behavior of others, and certainly not about the absence of a moral consciousness in ourselves. But it won't go away.

The "big" news in the paper is about the financial Crisis, Meltdown, Panic, or whatever the term du jour is. While the real crisis goes unnoticed, or is dismissed as an aberration, rather than recognized as a symptom of what truly ails us, and it isn't economic or anything else material.

For one day a news story surfaces somewhere among the ads and catches our attention despite ourselves. And we are arrested in our mad dash to nowhere. At least for a moment.

That's when the old prayer and confession comes back: We have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done, and there is no health in us.

Does that last, telling phrase even appear in the Book of Common Prayer any more? Wasn't it airbrushed away about 1979 in the spirit of a spiritless age, and replaced by the prose equivalent of a happy face? Drunk with the theories and goods of the age, we rush on through the catastrophe, trampling over even our selves.

Animals
Scenes of the aftermath of this incident showed us who the mob was. They were all Obama voters. They show us the rewards of 50 years of welfare, the destruction of the family, personal responsibility, and all human empathy.

Did you see any of the interviews of some of them? They were quite gleefull. None showed any remorse or even any awareness that something was wrong.

Let's all imagine how they'll conduct themselves when this economy collapses under the weight of supporting a nation of beggars, cripples and slaves. It has to collapse. Our elected fools in D.C. are frantically trying to stave off the disaster befalling us, bailing out all our failed institutions. They deceive themselves and us too if we let them.

Imagine those Walmart shoppers, and the millions of their cousins in all our major urban areas, when their government is compelled to say something to them they've never heard before: "No".

No more money, no more entitlements. There's nothing left. Work or starve.

If you were horrified by their conduct when they simply wanted plasma TVs, think how they'll act when it's their survival.

I implore all of you, go out today and buy guns.

Great piece.
Yes, we are missing something big here. Did anybody see the recent article about the HUGE increase in in the number of kids who admit to cheating and lying? Where is the surprise? There is none, because we all expect that now in the age of a generation raised by flower punks.

Sorry Paul,

Your piece says a lot about the citizens around Long Island, NY as described by JD's Handsome Son. In my neighborhood, such people don't exist. I am not guilty of, nor responsible for, the reprehensible actions of those blue state denizens with whom I have nothing in moral, political and intellectual common.

New York is over-crowded.
After 3 days visiting I thought I would loose my mind if I had to walk down the busy sidewalks again or try to enter a store. It was like a Friday night on Bourbon Street. Nearly impossible to not get separated from friends. It must be very hard on a person's soul to live like they do. There is no grass or space or beauty. Just noise and shoving and confusion. Best Pizza I've ever had though and surprisingly very nice warm and friendly people. I'm guessing it happened because most people were half-asleep.

ME, ME, ME
It’s all about me, me, me, me that’s the way most of the last generation was raised. No more common courtesy, no more civility. Does anyone still hold a door for a stranger walking in behind them, give their seat on a bus to a women or even an elderly person. There was once a time when the gentlemen on the bus would all insist that the standing pregnant lady took their seat. The last time I did it, I was the only one and I got a bunch of stares and snickers. Does anyone still remove their hat when walking into a building or sitting down to eat? It’s the simple civil things that can make a different in life and we seem to have forgotten them. http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com

common courtesy, it seems...
...is not so common.

Teach people that they are a fortunate accident of the universe, that only a cosmic twist of DNA differentiates them from the animals, that we are indeed just another member of the animal kingdom, and what do we get?

The result should not be all that surprising.

Mob Mentality
Our moral/ethical compass is seriously out of whack. WalMart is not the main problem here. It’s the weak to non-existent moral imperative in individuals in failing to recognize that the sanctity of life and the safety of the store employee are more important than gross conspicuous consumption. Why is this? BIG question but here is a partial answer. 1) The lack of parental and institutional emphasis on moral/ethics education and the lack of these two to actually “walk their talk”. 2) Lack of rewarding forthright moral/ethical behavior while indirectly rewarding the opposite. 3) The deluge of grotesque marketing to the masses and the recipients being intellectually and morally weak and unable to assess this as manipulation with the downside this brings to ones materialistic mindset versus distancing oneself from manipulation and assess the overall good, including the moral one, of consumption. 4) Mob mentality must be resisted by each individual if they want to retain independent, thoughtful action but that, again, takes internal strength, some derived from the moral, and that is pathetically lacking in your average crazed consumer. 5) The extreme self-centeredness and self-interest of the majority even to the point of not seeing or, worse, not caring about a human life. Nice one America!

Heart condition
Even though all humans possess a conscience, it is "seared" in this day of self-actualization pumping into every facet of life. The problem is that man's fallen nature, when left unchanged by faith in God,the Man Jesus Christ and His sacrifice, seeks to satisfy full blown greed- I want, I will obtain, I deserve all the "good" I desire. Problem- most people do not want true "good"- for only God is good. And when the Walmart episode is observed, we do not see "good Samaritans" or "neighbors". Only greedy self seekers.

Horrific Death
My understanding is that the autopsy showed that this man died of asphyxiation. Unless there were a huge number of people piled on him, the chances are he was knocked down to the floor and someone stepped on his neck, fracturing his Hyoid Bone.

The Hyoid Bone hold the breathing tube or trachea open. If it is fractured, the trachea collapses on itself. While you can still exhale some air, you cannot breathe in air. This man probably suffered horribly for 4 minutes and one can only hope that he passed out after that.

So, people saw him struggling to breathe and just kept on "keeping on".

Americans are getting more selfish, more cruel and more stupid every fricken day.

Joycey
new York has a density of 26,400 people per square mile, a bit more than London or Paris , and Manhattan has almost 70,00 people per square mile. There are those of us who love it:) As far as I'm concerned Washington is just a sleepy southern town whose chief virtue is that it's only four hours from civilization.

You should have gone to Central Park, or better yet Prospect Park. It's way out in Brooklyn and doesn't get as many people. Which pizzeria did you got to?

Maybe a prayer first?
Give me a break. It may be true these people are the Godless dregs of society, but it's very doubtful "faith" or "conscience" would have helped in a mob situation.

Crowd mentality eliminates conscience or ethical behavior.

Wal-mart placed “loss leader” merchandise in front of these people, and thousands showed up to get the biggest bang for their buck. The size of the crowd created the emotion that allowed “normal” people to ignore any moral behavior a small group would have fostered.

Religion wouldn’t have helped, and we can’t know that the people in the front of the line weren’t deacons at their church. Even if that front-line person would have been willing to give his/her life for that store employee, the same people who destroyed the employee and the metal-framed doors of the store would have destroyed this “Good Samaritan,” too.

This could have happened in Georgia, Arizona or here in Colorado Springs—home to the Nation’s “faithful.” Black Friday was here, too, and people were out in huge numbers. But there were thousands of stores open nation-wide without incident.

Other stores learned the lesson this Wal-mart failed at. Let the idiots line up outside and have clerks walk down the line passing out tickets to the loss leaders.

Barbarians At The Gate
Stores are asking for trouble when they tease the uncivilized masses with scarce bargains. These mindless people are indeed probably Obama supporters.

Life means nothing to them. Think, abortion. The killing of a helpless baby. Material things are what they live for. There is a mob mentality these people have.

We are so close to being a Third World Country. You elites who live in pristine areas where this type of people are never seen, have no idea what goes on in many sections of the country.

You sit in judgement of others who do live in these areas and wonder why they want to defend themselves against these barbarians. As J.D.'s son says,if you don't have gun,buy one. If you have one, learn how to use it. You're gonna need it.

Obama not a NATURAL BORN US Citizen!
Hey folks, don't you think it's a little presumptuous to argue about Obama's appointments and policies, when he's not even a natural born US citizen? Ergo, he doesn't meet one of the three basic qualifications for the presidency. HE WAS BORN IN KENYA, AND ALL HE'S SHOW SO FAR IS A PHOTOSHOP FAKE BIRTH CERTIFICATE. SEE FOR YOURSELF HERE:

AMERICA IS WORTH IT!

Smiley Face
The smiley face at the local Wal-Mart has been replaced by a new logo or picture-statement. But the underlying reality of our souls has not changed much.

This article is a cool drink of water in a hot, dry desert.

Moreover, Walker Percy deserves a lot more attention than he receives these days. I think, in novels like The Moviegoer and The Second Coming--he got the bigger picture.

Naw, missing the point as usual.
Why are these people like this? Yeah they are fallen human beings but Americans have always been fallen human beings and didn't use to have to act like this.

Their Government has failed, their Society has failed, their neighbors have failed, and it's their OWN dam Commieqr, Successful Hating, Bigoted, Racist, Trailer Trash, Stupid FAULT!

This is your "populism" in action. This is the result of Bill Ayers' public education.

This is what I call the "chocolating" of America.

The toxic culture of Whoopi's "Dear Little Friends" metastasized across all socio-economic groups to widespread fatality.

You want a solution? CIVIL WAR!

These people don't deserve to live.

You want a better country, a better life?

Get the REAL “Shock of Recognition” here.

Most of your fellow citizens are worthless human beings, better off for everybody if they are recycled.

You let them live and continue to elect our Useless, Failed, and Problem CAUSING Government, they will eventually, in their mindless stupidity, bigotry, envy and hatred, trample YOU!

The Big Mick

To Rowly in GA.
I tend to agree with what U say..I had to go to

To Rowly cont'd
had to go to 2 Walmarts to finally get 00-Buckshot but I'm stocked up now!! I don't think such a tragedy could occur around here but maybe "I ain't seen nuttin yet"???
My Uncle left here today going back to the Atlanta area..He's probably not too surprised..Hang Tuff""

Roy
Thanks,you too.

To show the mindset of freeloaders here,we have a Golden Harvest Food Bank that gives donated food to the 'needy'.

Someone complained in the newspaper last week that if they wanted to help the poor they should give out gift cards. Such gratitude!!

These people are ungrateful and feel they are 'owed' a handout. Many will take it (and do) if it is not readily available to them.

Rowly
I still give to a couple of the charities, but No gift cards!! I grew up poor but not hungry and nobody ever knew it but the family..I was taught early on that "we don't take handouts" and I'm not sure that's a bad philosophy.
I do try to give to USO, Wounded Warriors, VFW etc, but I'm one of them so that's almost an obligation!! No NOT ALMOST--IT IS..anyway CHEERS

Roy
I grew up on a farm and farmers were almost all poor, but we didn't know it We were like everyone else. Unlike city kids,we always had food, fresh in summer and canned in winter.

Many who are on the dole today have much more than we did back then. I suppose that is why I have no sympathy for them. We all worked on the farm, even my mom.

Thank you for your service. My dad was in WW1 and my three brothers were in the service. Two in The Korean Conflict at the same time and one in Germany just after WW11.
