Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Dear Conservative,

Yes, I know, these are times that try conservatives' souls. The sunshine soldiers left long ago, and we survivors are left to sit on the ground and tell sad stories of the death of our favorite theories. I get a lot of calls from patients like you, still in mourning after the presidential election. Here is Dr. Greenberg's Rx for the political blues:

Remember that the political pendulum swings back as surely as it did forth, this time after a long period when conservative ideas -- and candidates -- were in the ascendant.

It's that old Hegelian three-step: thesis, antithesis, synthesis. In short, things change. And isn't it a relief to be out of power for a change? You can almost feel the decompression.

Yes, we're still to blame for the economic tumult, the wars and threats of wars, all the troubles in the world ... but soon enough the grand disillusion with the next administration will set in on the usual fringes of American public opinion. It's already begun with the criticism of the president-elect's first appointments or even possible appointments.

Only weeks ago, some of these critics were his most fervent fans. Conspiracists may change their target; they remain conspiracists. Let's just do what we can to make sure we're not embarking on another eight-year hatefest, shall we?

That sort of thing grows tiresome. And repetitive. Only the name of the of the president changes. ("WASHINGTON -- A Republican congressman from Georgia said Monday he fears that President-elect Obama will establish a Gestapo-like security force to impose a Marxist or fascist dictatorship...." --Newsmax, November 10, 2008.)

Oh, please. The election results of 2008 are but the mirror image of those of 1994, which were going to change everything, too. All that's happened is that the pendulum has just swung an equal but opposite distance. Remember the surest observation to make at every turn in human affairs: This, too, will pass.

Patience is the best prescription. But if that doesn't work right away, try an aspirin and don't call me in the morning. We political medics have more serious afflictions to tend to, like the hubris sure to affect the victors. Happens every time.

When this sense of depression, too, passes, and it will, just remember to avoid its equal but opposite delusion: euphoria. It's even more hallucinatory.

In the meantime, consider a sip -- only a sip, mind you, for medicinal purposes only -- of single malt in the evenings. Never drink alone or for consolation. Good whisky was made for celebrating with friends, not moping. Used for self-medication, it only prolongs the agony, and makes a man eloquent only to himself.

A better suggestion: Pick up a volume of Epictetus: "Events themselves do not hurt or hinder us. It is how we respond to them that matters. We make ourselves miserable by fretting about things over which we have no control, while neglecting those things that we can control, like our reactions. Learn to distinguish between the two." That may be a loose translation, but you get the gist.

Another always relevant piece of counsel, author unknown: Win as though you were used to it and lose as if you liked it.

In short, let nothing you dismay.

And, no, I wouldn't turn to the Psalms just yet, not for any sorrow as ephemeral as the outcome of an election. Except to marvel at their literary quality, and their universal applicability when one needs a very present help in trouble. But be sure to use only the KJV brand. Accept no substitutes like the Revised Standard or some other generic version.

Save the Psalms for when you really need 'em -- for some serious crisis. Believe me, one will come. It's the human condition.

Cheers,

Inky Wretch

Not this time.
The pendulum will not swing back this time. Who's going to make it? The blacks who voted En mass for Obama? Even black Christians voted for him in spite of his strong support for abortion. Or maybe the thousands of Somalis and other African refugees being brought in every year. Perhaps Hispanic immigrants who have not forgotten the Mexican-American War and want the Southwest back. Do you really think the growing numbers of Muslims will vote for a conservative Republican? Oh, that’s right-we just name to reach out to them with money to Africa and high level appointments to various positions. But we tried that didn’t we? Sorry, but the pendulum is forever fixed to the left. It’s payback time.

It will swing back
...simply because Obama can't run on image a second time. He will have a track record of deeds by the next campaign, and if it is as uninspiring as his earlier career, chances are he'll be drummed out of office quite fast.

The man was an empty suit, and once in office he won't be able to hide that.

Thank you
Thank you for making me smile since the election... I just hope that things get better for us all. We are all Americans and we need to hope for a successful presidency for Obama. His success is our success.

Backlash re: being duped by MSM et al
What was said was said very well and may be comforting further down the road if O. doesn't blow it. I read TH every day and see that many people feel betrayed by the media, a poorly run McCain campaign, the apparent MSM lapdog, and the lies and deceit of the Obama machine. People are concerned and afraid of what O and his buddies will do to our constitution and to our country. I wouldn't underestimate the angst if i were you! I myself will not be able to feel much better about O's being president no matter how much I sit with friends and pour out a drink. This pendulum threatens to be a decidedly different kind of pendulum, however, to use your analogy. What if O doesn't allow for a "pendulum" concept? What if O sees the pendulum as flawed and the pendulum outdated in lieu of needing CHANGE? Dictating this new concept to others by power and might? Maybe one drink is okay but I would definitely keep my wits about me for the next few years--if you know what I mean!!!

Success??
Success? Did you get a chance to read his agenda before they pulled it from his transition team website? Have you been listening to him over the past two years? His success would mean a trashing of the first and second amendments, massive spending and tax increases, creation of a civilian defense force (like the brown shirts maybe), an end to don’t ask-don’t tell, and amnesty for the illegals that will make the Southwest, and therefore the country, forever blue. I think it’s a mistake to see Obama as just another liberal, like Bush, who will do some good and some bad. I don’t think it’s likely we will do what it would take to avoid becoming a fascist third world country.

Greenberg is deluded
Spare me your "what me worry?" happy-face essay. This is not just another swing in the pendulum. If Obama gets to do even a fraction of what he said he'll do, there won't be a pendulum to swing back.

Even more amazing is that Greenberg's essay got a "five" rating.

I Couldn't Disagree More
Relax? Take a deep breath? Things will be just fine? Not on your life! The advice in this article is a recipe for calamity. The weak and the beltway sycophants now advise us to "give Obama a chance." A chance for what?

Call it name-calling if you must but the mentality of the Democratic Party is socialism. It would be quite unwise to rest on the winds of time with no clue as to when it may shift the pendulum in the opposite direction. Action, not complacency is key.

Wonderful words Mr. Greenberg!
Thank you!

Though I must say
that things a very different now with the nation full of massive numbers of uneducated immigrants voting for handouts from dems.

Congress has been busy replacing Americans with foreigners.

The pendulum will return
Hopefully not at a distance as to sever the heads of the conservative leaders. The "true" conservatives are exactly what we need in four years and he or she must appear now so as to be recognised. The true conservatives we had this time around were not well recognised enough for the people to know what they stood for and what they would try to do for us! If they fail again, we could face hard times in the future.

No more moderates
Now is the time for true Conservatives to say NO MORE to moderate and liberal Republicans who keep sabotaging the Conservative movement (which is based upon our country's founding principles). We need to prepare now for the next election.

Let your voice be heard here:

We're losing
in all arenas, not just politics. Most churches, our public schools and universities, television and movies, the media, and even professional sports, all serve to indoctrinate the population with left wing propaganda. Our law enforcement and military are not what they should be due to political correctness-only a sick society sends its women off to war to kill and be killed. The family is disappearing and has disappeared in some communities. But we’re told to be proud of ourselves because we elected a black man POTUS. Maybe if we were a better people. As it is, I’m not very proud of committing suicide.

The light has been eclipsed
in both parties and it didn't happen overnight. Our country is being destroyed by party insiders, politicians and a corrupt media swinging their weight around to override the voter. Let's replace *them* with illegals and see how they like it, we'd probably be better off. Beer anyone?

"Pendulum"? No! Ammunition, YES!
Presently gun stores are doing brisk business, at least 15% better than a year ago...
Personally I have stocked up on ammo and a couple of extra guns...just in case.
Greenberg's column is an example of what's going wrong with America, "political correctness".
Wishy-washy spineless drivel!

Conservatism and the Republican party are NOT one and the same.
Bush, McCain & most of the GOP have been acting mote liberal than the Dems used to just a few years ago.
This has resulted in : America is broke, "kaput", bankrupt! Financially, economicalle, morally and spiritually.

Our only hope to mend "Humpty-Dumpty" is with true and proven conservative actions and, given the pickle we have allowed ourselves to be in, it will be impossible.
The majority of Americans now are Tax Consumers while the Tax Payers are a rapidly dwindling faction.
Good luck to all!

Confession to Make
I have a confession to make: I've committed the sin of exaltation at least seven times--after the election of The Prince. Yes, I'm a practicing Catholic, and yes, I'm not going to Communion for a while. And I didn't even vote for the guy. I wrote in Dr. Ron Paul, whose philosophy of non-intervention, in the age of 9/11s, intrigued me. But Obama offers something new yet not radically new: something solid as a rock; something cool under enormous pressure; something unorthodox in substance and style; something beautiful to behold; finally, something that brought tears to the eyes of a cold, cynical heart.

Really?
Conservative ideas and candidates haven't been in the ascendent for a long time.

Thank you
LOL. The Inky Wretch (Mr. Greenberg) speaks wisdom and truth, as always. "Let not your heart be troubled." We've got a lot of history behind us and an undetermined amount in front of us. And a big old God (I think He's a Southerner) in heaven. Exhale, all you illuminati and lovers of Republican ideals. It helps.

Pendulum Revisited
Perhaps we should look at this pendulum concept in a different light. We tend to look at it in short cycles, but the more beneficial view may be the longer view. Nations tend to start at a point of great patriotism, principles, resolve, and realism. But the pendulum swings back and forth in short cycles, but with each swing, it stops short of the place that swing started, until eventually the pendulum stops. By the time it stops, the nation is in total collapse. Remember the Soviet Union?

It appears that the Russian Empire is on the rise again, but where does the pendulum start this time?

DR. GREENBERG LOVE THE ARTICLE
WE ENJOY YOUR ARTICLES,EVEN THE MALT IN THE SCOTCH IS A LITTLE TAINTED,JOHNNY WALKER THE LYNN,WE FOUND OUT WAS WORKING FOR THE TALAABAN,THE PIRATES OF SAMALIA SOME TIME NEXT YEAR MAY BE GIVEN THE LIFE TIME ACHIVEMENT AWARD,OBAMA WANTS TO BRING ALL THE AXIS OF EVIL DUDES OUT OF GITMO!I THINK HE PLANS TO BRING THEM TO THE USA!NACY POLISI AND HARRY REID AND BARNEY FRANK WERE JUST GIVEN A WHOLE FLEET OF FREE BUICKS!SO IM WITH YOU ITS TIME TO PRAY AND READ THE PSALMS,AND THE WHOLE BIBLE,THANKS PAUL

Drink in the Psalms every day!
To be honest, I would not want to skip the scripture only for "emergencies" anymore than I would want to skip food, or water every day.
There are many great applicable Psalms. One is 47:7-8
"For God is the King of all the earth; Sing praises with understanding.

God reigns over the nations; God sits on His holy throne." -NKJ

No matter who is in power, God is still in charge!

Nihilism vs. Hysteria
Neither is appropriate at this point. I vote for firm resolve. Here are my thoughts about the future of our party.

http://inyourrightmind.blogtownhall.com/2008/11/14/republic an_rehab.thtml

No pendulum this time and why PUSH
the KJ version that is rife with errors created to placate the immoral King James! That version is half of the problem with Christians!

The political pendulum swings

Always remember.

When the country moves right, its because Liberalism has failed.

When the country moves left, its because we forgot.

A couple sticking points ...
Mr. Greenberg, with all due respect, I would assert that conservatives aren't sitting around lamenting "failed theories". What we stand for is not theories, but proven principals. Also, we're not entirely to blame for the economic tumult. In fact I would place at least three fourths of the blame on liberal policies and politicking. Yes I know, republicans are culpable too, but the ones who are aren't conservatives.

Timidity is no answer!
Allow me suggest the author heed the words of Syrus, Publilius:

"Audacity augments courage; hesitation, fear."

Now is the time to stand and be counted, close ranks and move forward.

We will be back
It is always darkest before the dawn.
