Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

There was a small but revealing moment on the final night of the editorial writers' convention here in Little Rock not long ago. Our distinguished guest speaker of the liberal persuasion was waxing nostalgic for the heady time when the old Fairness Doctrine ruled the airwaves and all was right with the world of broadcast opinion. For in those days impartial government bureaucrats enforced the rule that, for every opinion voiced on radio and television, equal time had to be allotted to its opposite, and all was right with the world.

It all sounds fair enough - like so many abstract doctrines - if you didn't have to live with it. To appreciate, and apprehend, how the "Fairness" Doctrine really operated, just listen to one of my heroes in this business - Nat Hentoff, a true liberal who's seen it all in his couple of lifetimes in Medialand:

"I was in radio under the reign of the Fairness Doctrine, at WNEX in Boston in the 1940s and early '50s," he remembers. And being Nat Hentoff, he naturally aired a few of his opinions from time to time. Uh oh. "Suddenly Fairness Doctrine letters started coming in from the FCC and our station's front office panicked. Lawyers had to be summoned, tapes of accused broadcasters had to be examined with extreme care; voluminous responses had to be prepared and sent. After a few of these FCC letters, our boss announced that there would be no more controversy of any sort on WMEX. We had been muzzled."

The Unfairness Doctrine had claimed another victim. Which was just the way the mainstream media wanted it. Why debate others' ideas when it was so much easier to stifle them with lawyer letters?

It was a deliberate strategy. To quote one of the Democratic Party's apparatchiks back then, Bill Ruder: "Our massive strategy was to use the Fairness Doctrine to challenge and harass the right-wing broadcasters, and hope that the challenges would be so costly to them that they would be inhibited and decide it was too costly to continue."

It worked. Broadcast opinion was soon largely reserved for the right people with the right opinions, that is, moderately leftish ones. Or what our guest speaker called "legitimate" news outlets - like the New York Times instead of all those loudmouths agitating over the airwaves.

The gamut of political opinion on the television networks, all three of them in those pre-cable days, ran roughly from center to left-of-center.

This is the period today's nostalgic gliberals refer to as The Golden Age of television news. Golden for their opinions, anyway. At a time when the tube was still the dominant, shaping medium, ABC, NBC and CBS were the holy trinity. Any other viewpoint was considered less than respectable, even heretical, or just ignored. Which was easy to do if they couldn't be aired.

There was but one Truth in those days and Walter Cronkite was its prophet. They called him the most trusted man in America, and doubtless he was, for though he had imitators, he had no real competition. How things have changed. Mr. Cronkite tried writing a syndicated column not long ago and it fell flat.

Because in this age of alternatives like 24/7 television news, radio talk shows all over the dial, and the ubiquitous internet with all its bloggers, one for every taste and many with no taste at all, there is a multiplicity of other viewpoints to choose from. And lots of fact-checkers out there to catch us all. Just ask Dan Rather, formerly of CBS.

Wild and crazy thing, the First Amendment, when it burgeons in all its glory. It produces the widest variety of fruits, or just fruitcakes, for you can't have liberty without inviting license. But I'll gladly bear the abuses to enjoy the freedom.

There are always those who'd like to improve on freedom of speech. Shut up, they explain. All they want is what's fair, meaning their idea of what's fair. There's a difference.

They sigh for the good old days when riffraff like Rush Limbaugh and numerous imitators could be shut out of the public discourse. It is those who claim to speak for The People who resent it most when people choose to listen to somebody else.

We knew who our betters were in the good old days, when we tuned in to find out what was politically correct long before it had acquired that label. No wonder our current elite, or those who'd like to be, dream of restoring the Fairness Doctrine in all its constricting glory.

On his Web site, Barack Obama says that the country should "clarify the public interest obligation of broadcasters who occupy the nation's spectrum." I'm not sure what that means, but I have an idea. The senator can put all the lipstick he wants to on the Fairness Doctrine, but it'd still be unfair. Those who wax sentimental for it mystify me. I'd much prefer to win a fair fight, or even lose one, rather than tie the other guy's hands. For the best response to an idea one detests is not to suppress it, but to offer a better idea. It's only fair.

Mr. Greenberg
You're being too nice.

White hot outrage is the only appropriate reaction to such corruption.

the US hasn't awakened to the threat
One can only hope that the country, meaning probably most people outside east and west coast cities, learns of the agenda that the used car salesman has behind his back. Working in a world, as I did for many years, where every client had a public agenda and a private one - you got used to investigating the client's actions to find out what his private agenda was because despite the glib and right-sounding words that flowed from his mouth, the unstated agenda is really what he wanted to happen. We were very good at discovery and making those things happen. In the case of BO, if that agenda is discovered after the fact of an election victory, the net losers will be those folks who are not lucky enough to escape, meaning those who haven't mega-funded his campaign.
Sorry, that sounds terribly ominous, but hidden agendas, as his eyes betray that he has, frighten me beyond description when it comes to a nation as strong as the USA.

Obama's agenda . . .
Dr. Druhl:

I have yet to understand why anyone would want to bring this country down, but that is exactly what will happen if Obama is elected.

Oh, he talks a good talk. And if I were "buying", perhaps I could or would swallow what he is saying hook line and sinker. Therefore, I understand why those who are looking for a handout or are voting for him because he is black see what they wish to see.

When I heard his first speech at the Democratic Convention in 2004, I said to my husband, I think I could vote for that man. Little did I realize, then, who he was and what he was.

I learned quickly. Snake oil is what he is selling.

His eyes and expression are a dead give-away. And his smarmy smile goes along with those expressions.

I see him for what/who he is.

Therefore, I can only say: "Amen" to your post.

TOTALITARIANISM
is defined as "the political concept that the citizen should be totally subject to an absolute state authority".
We see this happening in every aspect of Obama's campaign tactics. Jaming calls to hush up a talk show that is not favorable to Obama, manipulating voter registeration, attacking citizens who dare to question his policies, such as Joe the Plummer, redistribution of wealth or as Obama calls it "spreading the wealth around", calling people racist who disagree with him, and supporting policies which are bias to a segment of the citizens that don't agree with him.
ALL of Obama's associations and actions and policies are leading this country to a Totallitarian State and 50% of the citizens are willing to follow. Not since J. Edgar Hoover of the FBI who used the FBI to harass political dissenters and activist and amassed secret files on political leaders and citizens have we seen such potential abuse of power.

Let's cut to the chase
Everything you need to know about “Hush Rush”, a.k.a. the Fairness Doctrine, is summed up in Mr. Greenberg’s second-to-last sentence: “For the best response to an idea one detests is not to suppress it, but to offer a better idea.”

The left knows their ideas are repulsive to sane people, and in the free market of ideas they would be overwhelmingly rejected. Their only hope is to muzzle opposing viewpoints, so that is what they are planning to do. It’s the same tactic employed by Stalin, Hitler, Mao, et al.

"Fairness Doctrine"
Funny. Opra isn't granting equal time to Sarah Palin and John McCain (or Hillary Clinton) as she did with Obama.

The MSM Media outlets are selling Obama cut rate time for a 30 minute political commerical wihtout rebuttal. (Thank GOD for the remote.)

Be careful what you wish for, this could cut both ways.

What Is Fair??
What is fair depends on who is deciding it.It already is not fair to attack a Democrat on any subject. It is totally fair to demonize anything a Republican says.

After months of one-sided propaganda from the media this election cycle, the only reason to have a fairness doctrine would be to shut down all dissention. It has already been shut down, except some talk radio and Fox,which does lean right.

It is shameful the way the media has shilled for Obama. They are not even trying to hide it. They are that arrogant. That is more dangerous, even than Obama. To have a monopoly over news, no integrity and a socialist leader is super-dangerous.

PAUL RIGHT ON !
OBAMA,?WANTS TO TALK ABOUT MEDIA FAIRNESS,MY GOSH,OB HAS NOTHING TO WHINE ABOUT THE RADICAL MEDIA DOES FLIPS FOR THIS PHONY DUDE,THEY PRAISE HIM,HE HAS CHILDREN SINGING HIS PRAISE,YOUTH MARCH FOR HIM,AND HE STILL WHINES,THE LIBERALS ARE NEVER HAPPY.AND THEY WANT TO MAKE ALL US CONSERVATIVES UNHAPPY!IF OBAMA WINS IT WILL BE 4 YEARS OF HIM TRYING TO CLARIFY THE MUD!THAT THE LIBERALS PUT IN THE WATER!AND WHEN IT BECOMES CLEAR THEY WILL ADD MORE MUD!!!!!!!!!

Take on the MSM!
Maybe we could use the "Fairness Doctrine" on ous side! If we(Republicans)could get at least a little rebuttal time on their playing field,in the form of a short commentary even,it would help.We certainly wouldn't want to sink to their level, but we can use their weapon against them.Surely there are some really good lawyers out there who could take a stab at it. I don't know how hard it would be to prove they aren't being fair, but it can be done. Like someone said,we're sort of "preaching to the choir" here.

The real Obama
Let's hope it's not too late for America to discover who the real Barack Obama is: a liar and a bigot who is a member of the leftist illuminati. Let's see him produce a birth certificate that proves that he was really born in Hawaii instead of Kenya. His grandmother has been quoted as saying he was born in Kenya and then rushed to Hawaii to make it look like he was born there.

Un-fairness Doctrine
I was in broadcasting when the so-called "Fairness" Doctrine was in full force. We rarely ran any opinion pieces, except on local issues. When we did run opinion pieces, they were from a "service" which provided topics like "We believe rain is good for crops" and "We think the sky is blue." Who could argue with those hard-hitting opinions? Truth be told, we rarely had anyone ask for "equal time" because we never said anything controversial. That's what our media will be reduced to if the Fascists get their way. Be afraid, be VERY afraid my fellow advocates of the right to Free Speech. It IS worth dying for, and we might have to.

look what happened . . .
under the clinton administration. After the inauguration, the irs was unleashed on almost all conservative organizations. Millions of dollars were spent by conservative organizations to obtain legal help during the supposed "audits" (read harassment).
Richard Nixon lost the presidency over ONE purloined FBI file.
hilary rodham and bill were in possession of around 400 files.
Double standard anyone??
When you sleep with dogs (democRAT) party you get fleas (b. HUSSEIN oBaMa).

tj
Don't forget the 1500 FBI Files they stole as one of their first shots at the opposition. Pure blackmail!

Be VERY afraid...
...of what an unbridled Obama/Pelosi/Reid will do.

But we can hope. After all, there may yet be a BIG shoe or two to drop...

1. When the recording of Michelle Obama's recent telephone call to African Press International is made public, she and hubby will have some 'splaining to do.

2. Obama's money-man, Tony "the fixer" Rezko, is currently "singing" from his jail cell to federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald (he of Scooter Libby fame).

3. There may yet be a Kenyan birth certificate.

4. ACORN-Obama links may lead to a RICO indictment, and more "singing."

5. U.S. Congressman Eni Faleomavaega, a non-voting, long time Democrat Congressman from American Samoa and an Obama supporter, visited Indonesia in July of 2007 and is suspected of securing government records damaging to Obama’s candidacy (i.e., proof of his Indonesian adoption and citizenship). In exchange for document turnover and document suppression, money would change hands, and the Congressman would attempt, through Obama, to foster a “hands off” policy with regard to the Indonesian government’s continuing suppression of rights of Christians in Papua. THAT, friends, calls for jail time - or at least deportation back to Indonesia.

Unfairness Doctrine
The Foulness Doctrine assumes there are two sides to every issue. There are not two sides to every issue. There are many sides to every issue. Even the Left is not monolithic. Many Leftist voices will be silenced if the Foulness Doctrine is resurrected. Maybe that's our only hope of defeating it.
