Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Old dogs can learn new tricks after all. John McCain fooled us all, again.

This time the old rascal went north to Alaska for his running mate. He got the whole o-so-savvy commentariat rummaging through the Internet trying to find out just who is this Sarah Palin. Is that Sarah with the "H" or without? Pay-lin? How ya spell that? Sweetheart, get me rewrite!

One thing for sure: A McCain administration -- is that the first time I've used that term? Does that mean it's becoming possible? -- could certainly be trusted to keep national security secrets. At least to judge by how complete a surprise his vice presidential pick turned out to be. And how many false leads he scattered about. Talk about camouflage. Here all these prospective veeps, properly male, were rehearsing their acceptance speeches in their minds and now . . . Sarah Who?

After the first shock and delight -- Hey, it's a woman! Hey, an Alaskan! Hey and best of all, she ain't Mitt Romney! -- there comes the first impression. And it's good. Good enough to make this eternal optimist forget Geraldine Ferraro and Spiro T. Agnew, a couple of other surprise vice-presidential nominees that the Head of the Ticket thought was a good idea at the time. Uh, oh. Can there be Dan Quayle hidden behind that appealing facade?

But as the scattered pieces of Sarah Palin's biography come together, a picture begins to form. And it's as attractive as a poster of Beautiful Scenic Alaska.

Consider: Mother of five. Small-town mayor. Governor. Tough. Outspoken. Reformer. No friend of the party machine. Approval ratings somewhere in the low 80s. No, that's not a typo. The 80s. George W. Bush, eat your heart out. The lady must be doing something right up there in the frozen north. Lifelong member of the NRA. Married to a commercial fisherman, who's also some kind of snowmobile champ, she was a journalist before going straight. In her youth, runner-up for Miss Alaska. Now strait-laced, old-fashioned Republican but with a wide populist streak. Civil yet firm. Corruption fighter. She won't even allow lobbyists into her governor's office on the third floor of Alaska's tiny state capitol at Juneau.

As for her personal trials and tribulations, aka Scandals now that she's in the national spotlight, they sound a lot like a capsule picture of The American Family, 2008, God bless her and hers. Who can't identify? Who doesn't have a family and all that comes with it?

Family values? Pro-life? The woman doesn't have to say a word to assure anybody on that score. Just look at that family photo. Was a union member, too. A reminder that there's a difference between union members and their bosses.

Every entry in her biographical file appeals. I can feel the call of the identity politics I've been badmouthing for years.

And those schoolmarm glasses. I think I'm in love. She's probably got antlers on her living room wall and a gun rack in her pickup truck. Do you think she does the two-step? Yee-hah!

Then the first impression begins to solidify: Here's someone who's demanding, most of all of herself. I've got this instinctive impulse to stand up straight, salute, and shout: Yes, ma'am! Wilco!

Always reserving the right to tear the lady apart in snarky columns to come, my first reaction: a masterstroke. Congratulations, John McCain. Sir.

The scandalmongering can come later. Indeed, it's already begun. You'll hear a lot of things about the lady. Order up a carload of salt.

I write this surrounded by a sea of shining shards that used to be a glass ceiling. Hillary Clinton put 18 million cracks in it this year, and now Sarah Palin has broken right through it. Naturally she'll be attacked as too inexperienced for the job. By supporters of . . . Barack Obama for the top job. End of argument.

Hey, what a country. I know that's an old line, but it always sounds new.

Like America herself. Tell me again that John McCain is somehow a threat to the American dream. All of Barack Obama's stirring attacks in his foamy acceptance speech seem to have gone flat overnight.

Old John McCain is starting to look young at heart, and young in mind. And Joe Biden just old. Talk about surprises: Senator Biden may be in for a few in that vice presidential debate. Note another telling little detail in the lady's curriculum vitae: Sarah Palin, aka Sarah Barracuda back then, was a point guard on her high school basketball team. What a contrast she'll make with the slick senator from Delaware. She's genuine.

It's been 14 years since I've donated money to the RNC or to ANY Conservative candidate. Today, I'm writing checks to both!!!

Palin's A Gem
I believe she'll be president in 2012. Either way, a one term McCain presidency or an Obama win.

After watchin McCain speak tonite I'm thinkin it's gonna be the latter.

Here's the count as I saw it.....
After watching her speech the other night....I counted three political uppercuts, two political left hooks, and five political kicks to Nobamas cajoles....talk about coming out swinging?...wow....this woman would be a great-commander-in-chief...she takes no prisoners...

After watching McCain's speech....and him thanking God...yes, libs, I said "God" with a capital "G"....the quote that surprised me was McCain said that conservatives have to go back to the basics....and that is so true.....

The next 60 days or so are going to be a media frenzy on both sides...punch and counter-punch....but what is becoming increasingly clear is that the MSM is pretty much finished as a credible entity.

Palin Rocks!
Charles Krauthammer usually has a pretty solid, no-nonsense insight regarding Washington. His column today indicates a gross underestimation of how much Gov.Palin has changed the entire campaign and turned it upside down.
America is fed up with the Beltway "elite" and that includes all involved, politicians, journalists and lobbyists.
Gov.Palin is viewed by mainstream America as a true breath of fresh air and has already accepted her with enthusiasm after just two appearances. She is totally transparent, inspires great confidence and, most importantly, she is an outsider.

Silver Lion,
when you stated "five political kicks to Nobamas cajoles"..I assume you meant Michelle NObama?

Cindy Lou ... Who?
Cindy McCain was fantastic last night.

Did you notice the difference in the look of serenity and peace on the face of Cindy versus the perrenial scowl on the face of Michelle Obama last week? A 180 degree difference in perspective in the contrast of these two.

She's genuine.
And Biden and Obama are not. The first time I ever saw Biden on television was when he was being introduced at the DNC, and I noticed that fake grimace and set mouith as he attacked McCain, just playacting. And poor Obama, still, after all these years, looking for an identity. And then along came Sarah, and in an instant I recognized a future president, and a good one.

Sarah Palin Potus 2012:
I see Sarah as Presidential in 2012 her running mate Condi Rice or Micheal Steele.

Palin changes Everything
And thanks to the main stream media for coming out so harshly against her. I really believe they created a huge curiousity about who this woman is and allowed her to garner 37 millions viewers Wednesday night.

That has turned the campaign around. For Obama to appear on O'Reilly at a moments notice, tells me the Obama campaign is trembling with fear.

As they should!

Sarah Palin
The Democrats and the MSM have been wetting themselves ever since she was introduced last Friday. Her acceptance speech shows why. She is genuine, a real, small-town, salt-of-the-earth American. She doesn't need a TelePrompter to give a speech. The TelePrompter she had malfunctioned, but nobody noticed because she spoke from the heart. If Hussein's TelePrompter had malfunctioned his words would have been stumbling all over themselves. I see Palin/Jindal in 2012.

Its about the narrative
"Noonan {Reagan's speech writer] exploded: "The most qualified? No! I think they went for this -- excuse me-- political bullsh*t about narratives --"

She didn't know the mike was on.

In other words, 1984, war is peace, anything, but the truth.

I have already heard hard-core
dems say they are voting McCain/Palin.

This is our chance to take this country back to the framers vision.
JSM has always wanted that, but he is just one man against 99, but he always fought for the taxpayer.

As President and with a VP who has the same commitment, he will "make them famous" when they try to steal any more of our money for their pet pork projects.

Paul
This is the best column that you have ever written.

It's the integrity, stupid.
People talk about Gov. Palin having a quality they like, though most can't seem to put their finger on what it is.

I think it is called "integrity."

I may yet be proven wrong, but I have a hard time imagining her making derisive comments about groups of people in private that would require explanation in public.

She is a real person, not a political bobble-head.

I just hope Washington is changed more by her than she is by Washington.

GO PALIN!!!
I am so happy to see a genuine person running for office as opposed to the old Washington political elite, or the phonies like Clinton and Obama. I wasn't happy about McCain before, but now I will donate to the campaign AND get out the vote for McCain/Palin!

Anyone who can have the MSM foaming at the mouth and Obama running scared - right into the arms of Bill O'Reilly - is definitely a force to contend with! We're seeing the true colors of so many people in reaction to this choice by McCain, including (unfortunately) Peggy Noonan).

Sarah, stay strong and don't let the bastards get you down. The REAL people of America love you - and ALL of your kids!

The moose in the headlights
Forget about those antlers on her living room wall. Check out the grizzlied couch and crabbed coffee table in her office:

http://www.ncobrief.com/index.php/archives/when-female-blog gers-speak/trackback/

Regarding the surprise factor, as I blogged the other day:

"I'm savoring the joy of bloggers, politicians and media types who think McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as running mate is the best thing since sliced sourdough bread, not to mention the bewilderment of their counterparts on the other side of the aisle, who, like the proverbial deer — moose? — in the headlights, obviously didn't see it coming down the road to the White House.

Thanks!

The Barracuda - I mean Sarah Palin
Folks, it is just this simple. Even though I think Mac's first choice was Pawlenty, the point is, she is a bigger Maverick than Pawlenty. What it really boils down to is, the time is right for a conservative female to come to prominence, and I for one am schocked that the left is completely dismissing the occasion to praise the female choice! I mean haven't they been praising their "black" choice, it seems hypocritical to me...

Cindy McCain
Cindy has not been in the limelight like Mrs Obama. Of course maybe because Mrs. McCain has always been proud of her country (even if she dislikes certain actions people in it have taken). Mrs McCain has not given many speeches and does not engage in political stumping the way the other contender for first lady does.

However, Mrs McCain inherited a vast fortune and a life of ease. She could have chosen to be a "Paris Hilton" type and live the lifestyle of the rich and famous she chose to quietly go about doing charity work world wide, not only giving money but giving time and of herself.

While she certainly didn't bankrupt herself, she had a set of pearls that was nicer then the ones Barbara Bush used to wear, Cindy is a lady that can only be described as Class. She knows she has been blessed and instead of needing a Govermnet to take her money by taxes and wasteful trickle it down to the needy she gets right to work and helps those less fortunate. her adopted daughter, an adoption not done for show, not done for politics, done long before the more recent celebrity adoptions that are currently the fad, the adoption Mrs McCain made is a testimony to the type of first lady she will make.

Props where they're due
Thank you, sir. Even though it took no prodding to rev up this guy’s enthusiasm – I’ve been on board for Sarah ever since McCain locked up the nomination – it’s good to have the Greenberg seal of approval stamped upon Gov. Palin. I’m certain we’ve done the right thing.

Publius4254 - 7:29 post
I’m with you 100 percent on your last statement.

As a demanding, rigorous conservative
I was just about ready to throw my vote to McCain (the current one, not the historical one)until Palin was brought on the scene.

Now it's a soured deal. No way, no how, will I vote for this women answering the 3 AM call.

John McCain
built his reputation and persona on his desire to wrest the Republican party from the control of social conservatives. Now he has become one, at least for this election.

Dont' think so.

George Sand MN
A question to a "demanding rigorous conservative" from another one:

Do you really think that she is "less ready" than the "Messiah"?
I think you lied, you are just another one of those "liberal cockroaches" posing as conservative, scurrying like when they are exposed to sudden light...

Egon
You are one of those fellow conservatives who believe everybody with a conservative viewpoint has to buy the list of jingoistic slogans and high theater of political shows. That's why you post on Town Hall, from what I can see.

Buying into image and rhetoric is exactly what got 8 years of George Bush for the country.

No one can accuse us of learning from experience.

Hm-m-m
We you asking me if a female incarnation of Saint Sarah is less ready that Obama the Messiah?

I can't see much difference when it comes down to the hype.

poll question
does Palin
a) look more like Tammy Faye Baker
or
b) sound more like Wendy Whiner?

Real poll question
is everyonesshaganappi only acting stupid or really that way?

everyonesfacts
c) none of the above

Isn't there a freeway somewhere for you to play on?

everyone's - regarding Right's post
Trust me, as a long time conservative I can tell you that it's in the best conservative tradition to wish anyone who strays from the party line dead, zeroed, slain, executed.

It's also, perhaps, a Christian thing.

A Christian thing?
Hey George – get a life! Humor is also one of those identifiably Christian traits.

By the way, who do think you’re kidding, masquerading as a conservative.

Mr Sand
Trust me, as a long time conservative, I can tell you the trolls are very easily identified by their habitual use of leftist memes. Even when posing as something they are not, these points are so ingrained they are not, nay, cannot be recognized by the poseur, thus providing the clues. Try again Poseur, it wont do any good, but you are welcome to try again.

I'm going with
b) sounds more like Wendy Whiner

so so far:
1 - none of the above
1 - b
and 1 - stupid question

Keep 'em coming

pnwcon
i suggest you go to the matt lewis blog and you will find a number of conservatives who are not at all happy with palin.

savage on the radio has been ranting and raving about how terrible it is that mccain picked her.

you claim you know posers but have exposed yourself as a knee jerk conservative with no independent thoughts of your own.

Great Column
Paul,
I agree with the guy who said this is the best column you've written, at least that we have read here. Great writing, Sir. We were in your head and heart and wonder and Yee-haw!

Kevin

Love it, love it, love it!!!
Sarah is going to make a wonderful vice president. I cannot wait to vote for her!

She's smart, principled, accomplished and well spoken.

It IS morning in America. I cannot wait to watch as her leadership unfolds over the next few decades.

George Sand
And if we had the alternative to Geroge Bush for the last 8 years we would have been better off??? With Algore??? With "Medal of honor whiner" Jean Francois Kerry??? I don't think so.

Please visualize the USA after 9/11 with Algore as POTUS -or- a similar scenario with either Kerry or BHO as POTUS.

'Scuse me, I gotta go O'vomit.

BIDEN IS THE OLD DOG ON THE PORCH
Funny an old dog like Paul would have the nerve to compare John McCain to an old dog.

The TRUTH is John McCain is more of a maverick, a mustang, albeit old; but NOT AN OLD DOG.

IF you're going to use analogies of animals, try to use ones that FIT.

Sarah Palin is a pitbull--they are the only dogs bred to be heat seeking missles, they don't get distracted when they're going after a target.

JOE BIDEN IS THE OLD DOG ON THE PORCH, who nips, barks, and bites at anything when startled. And we will see this scenario in the VP debate when he's up against a pitbull. See, Joe Biden, he's just happy being an old dog lying on the porch with his failing vision, hearing, and sense of SMELL. He'll come out barking and nipping and Saracuda the pitt will go directly for the throat. No contest.

There ain't nothing "dog-like" about McCain, HE MAY BE AN OLD MAVERICK BUT A MAVERICK JUST THE SAME.

We need Palin's skills!
As someone who gets most of his protein from hunting animals I for one am releived that we finally have a VP who knows how to kill animals.

Biden has been wrong about every
foreign policy decision for 20 yrs. He opposed Reagan's missile defense, the war on communism, and was surprised by the fall of the USSR.

He has more recently been wrong about Iraq on several levels from wanting to break the country into sections to opposing the surge.

Length of time on a committee obviously does not mean someone learns anything or gets any smarter.

He was driven out of the pres. race in 88 for outright and acknowledged plagiarism. He's a fraud and makes a good team with the Great O who is as much a fraud as the Wizard of Oz was any day.

McCain even at his age is like fresh air. He says gov't should serve people and not vice versa. He says people should contr. and volunteer and help themselves. He is a proven bi-partisan (altho' I don't like some of it), he is a man of honor, he has never had an earmark, he has never voted to raise taxes, he sees the need for domestic energy production, and he understands the war on terror cannot be reduced to a courtroom show for C-Span.

all the bile and emetic from the left since Palin was announced actually shows how strong Mac-Sarah is and how the left is feeling that sucking sound made so famous by Perot of winds going South.

A Surprise in the Making?
Just maybe the demagogues will learn that Sarah Palin is America's Margaret Thatcher.

The demagogues are constantly spewing the lie that Republicans hate a strong woman. When Republicans vote her into office, what will happen to their lie? They certainly won't get away with the lie that she isn't strong.

Obnoxious, in the hillary mold, NO. Strong, in the Thatcher mold, definitely.

Right on, Brother!
I'm crazy about this gal and I'm a happily married man--except for last night.

Yes, every family is a little off its feed now and then.

Now, AFTER we've become independent from foreign oil--a suggestion.

We need to re-evaluate our friendships and alliances from A to Z with one criterion in mind: our vital interests. I'm leery of Woodrow Wilson; I'm an admirer of, but disappointed in--Bush's RUSH to war in Iraq. Yes, I wish Saddam were still there. I think our national security right now would be stronger, not more threatened, long term, by homicide bombers--not to mention unaccounted for nukes (read Michael Scheuer's "Marching Toward Hell").

George Sand - why do you disbelieve?
I'm on the ground here in Alaska where I've seen her be the most conservative governor we've had since Hickle and Coghill (both AIP members). Her decision to refuse the earmark for the Gravina Bridge project was even gutsier than Hickle's urination contest with the EPA over oxygenated fuels. So, why do you think she isn't a conservative?

Hey OBAMBIE TROLLERS!
First Sarah Palin kicked your butt...

Last night John McCain kicked your butt..

and now your candidate and all his sexist surrogates are out trying to destroy Sarah Palin...

This after the Obambies went out of ther way to destroy Hillary and even managed to tarnish Geraldine Ferraro as a racist...

You people are despicable and your candidate of change is a disgusting incompetent...

McCain LOVES this country and your candidate hates America...

The American people know authenticity when they see it...

And Obama - with his styrofoam pillars and adoring (m)ASSES - is phony as a plug nickel...

You and your candidate are finished...

Thank you Paul,
for verbalizing exactly what I felt when I heard Sarah's speech. A sense of pride and of joy. After all these weeks of Obama-talk, Sarah and John McCain made me realize again, how much I love my country and how happy I am that there is a team that I can vote for without hesitation. At the end of McCains speech, I found myself on my feet with tears in my eyes and gratitude in my heart.

That's
the only way ZERObama can win elections, Patriot; he has to destroy his opponents be they Hillary or Palin however I don't think he will succeed through his surrogates with Palin.
The scurrilous attacks on her, her family, especially her baby and her 17 yr.old daughter have awakened the protective instincts of millions of Americans. The bitter clingers if you will. I know it's brought out my protective instincts, she's the age of my eldest daughter and I have grandkids Britols age and younger, with three older. Another columnist wrote an article about mama bears,
and I think the fools in the drivebys and the DNC have awoken more mama bears than they know.

Judith..I think you weren't the only one, his
simple explanation of his ordeal and how it changed him was special. I lost respect for him over the past 8 years because he seemed
angry and vengeful, in 2000 I was ready to vote for him til S.C., I saw in the last part of the speech the John McCain I had admired 8 years ago. And like many, I wasn't sure I was going to vote for him, and only vote the down ticket but with the Saddleback breakthrough, Palin
and last night..He's got my vote..but I'm still
gonna fight Amnesty!!!!!

Palin was a Brilliant Move
Why because conservatives are suckers. Palin is the token conservative. While she gets to run around playing the daring of Conservatives, John McCain is free to pivot to the middle with a populist message that without a Palin to pine over would have certained angered many conservatives. The question is this which McCain will occupy the oval office. McCain 2000 the maverick and unreliable conservative or will it be the new McCain keeping in step with the party line or will it be the very new McCain the one presented at the end of the Republican Convention?

I think conservative should spending less time focusing on the Palin the Pitbull and more time thinking about which McCain they will get when they depress that lever?

It's common to hear
The blibbers make light of J. McCain's torture in the Hanoi Hilton. Have any of you ever seen him raise his arms above his shoulders? I know I haven't. It probably comes from repeated dislocatings of the arms by having them tied behind the back and then lifted up by them till his feet left the floor. Still unconvinced? try it sometime. He is still a hero in my opinion.

John McCain is real Obama is a ?
I support John McCain because he is a candidate I “know”. We can see what he has done in the Senate and when he was in the Navy. We can look at his family. We can see his past and present. He has hundreds of people who have known him and worked with him. McCain has a history that we can verify. John McCain has few secrets.

Obama wrote his own history with his books. Other than that, Obama's background is a blank. We have no knowledge of his life in Indonesia. We have virtually no independent information about his life in Hawaii. We have vague stories about his community organizer career and his work as a law school adjunct lecturer. The story line from Obama is " a fairy tale" in President Bill Clinton's words.

There is no clear documentation for Obama all the way up to his life in the US Senate. He has campaigned continuously for higher office for virtually his whole career, but he’s never built a documented record. He professes that he CAN"T produce any papers about his work in the Illinois legislature, yet he is a Harvard lawyer who is reported to be organized and brilliant. Politicians and celebrities are the ones who step up to recommend Obama. He is a man who has zero testimonials from “ordinary” people who had contact with him over the years. That doesn’t give me a feeling of confidence.

Obama looks like a man created by the media with a paper trail based on his own writings. He reminds me of the fictional, computer-generated actress in the movie SIMONE.

Level the playing field?
My lilly white Andalusian keester!! Obambi plays CHICAGO politics. That means you don't level the field, you CLEAR it and march to the victory line UNOPPOSED.

Coach
You pretty much took the words right out of my mouth, and, incidently, did a very good job of it, Thank You

It is unimaginable that in todays world of instant communication and information that we are only 8 weeks from a Presidential election and know almost nothing of substance about one of the candidates. It's inconceivable.

This can only be through the almost godlike machinations of an organization. An organization of such power as to be able to virtually dictate to the MSM, Hollywood, and the rest of the left leaning types what they are to say, how to say it and when to say it.

I am not talking conspiracy here, I am talking about similarity in thought processes and political leaning as well as education and an attitude of "this I am owed", elitism personified.

This next 60 days is going to be "bloody". The femanists are seeing a huge threat to everything that they have spewed out and built over the last 40 years. The interesting part is that if current angst and utterly corrupt actions against Governor Palin continue these people are digging their own graves.

The white male supremacist, the very soul of the liberal democratic leadership, is also being exposed. Again, the actions and attitudes of derision, vileness and condescension toward Governor Palin and her family, family situation and values is completely descriptive in of of itself. It shows the true feelings of elitism shared by these phonies.

This has been worth the wait. God bless Senator (soon to be President) McCain and God bless Governor (soon to be Vice President) Palin. Be strong, you will perservere.
