Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Boy, it’s a good thing the Obamas decided early on in this presidential campaign not to exploit those adorable little girls of theirs for political purposes. If they hadn’t, Michelle Obama’s speech Monday night at the Democrats’ national convention would have been unbearable — instead of just slightly sickening.

What ever became of the real Michelle, the tough broad from the South Side who said what she thought no matter what? Remember her?

You know, the one back at the start of this campaign. The one who said that only now, for the first time in her adult life, was she proud of her country. We knew just what she meant, at least before she explained/weaseled out of it. Ooo-wee. That got our attention. That lady was real.

But it’s hard to conjure her up now, the Michelle Obama who wasn’t going to let her husband’s latest political flyer — not off to Springfield this time but the White House — interfere with her children’s raisin’.

What ever happened to that Michelle? In Denver’s mile-high atmosphere, she seems to have been replaced by some kind of Stepford Wife and Loyal Helpmeet. What a transformation: from cracklin’ to white bread, State Street to Madison Avenue. It brought to mind Betty Crocker’s latest makeover on the flour boxes. Or maybe a re-run of the old “Father Knows Best” sitcom from the proper 1950s.

The old Michelle Obama had to go. She’d been entirely too much her own person, acting as if you could campaign for First Lady and still be yourself. Her performance Monday night sent me off on a little nostalgia trip for the old Michelle. The way I sometimes sigh over the old Hillary Rodham, the Ivy League radical with the Coke-bottle glasses who once upon an ancient time would tell you what’s what, and give you what-for, before she became the well-coiffed Hillary! of the bumper stickers and floor demonstrations.

And now, only in a much a shorter time, like a speeded-up time exposure, Michelle Obama has undergone the same extreme makeover. Monday night should have been the equivalent of a White Sox game under the blurry lights on a sweaty summer night at old Comiskey Park. Instead, the country gets Wrigley Field with its perfectly manicured ivy on the antique brick wall. Why, how Near North Side, how . . . Hyde Park! Somebody had got to the old Michelle Obama. The world as it is had struck while she was still orating about the world as it should be.

Who is it who makes our political figures brands instead of people? Who are the all-present, all-knowing and in the end all-corrupting They in every political campaign who soften John McCain’s edges and turn Barack Obama’s cool, reasoning approach into that of another pol shouting at us? The way he did Saturday when he brought on Joe Biden, the savvy Washington insider, as his running buddy and sideman.

What a show that was. And in old Springfield, where Abe Lincoln still walks at midnight. But not before. In the blinding heat of the day, Barack Obama had at last achieved his Transfiguration. He’d turned into an ordinary presidential candidate, complete with his vice presidential candidate and ax man at his side. All the shoddy traditions were being observed.

The new kind of politician — this year’s Wendell Wilkie and Adlai Stevenson, someone free of boss rule if you believed the advance notices — had become the old kind of politician he was supposed to be running against. Delicious.

But hey, listen, pal, Wilkie and Stevenson lost, didn’t they? And what people want, or at least what the party wants, is a winner. Which is why the show must go on.

It’s what They decree, and everybody knows who they are — the campaign consultants, the marketeers, the pollsters and focus-group organizers, the political cosmetologists. You can hear them filling up dead-air time on cable TV 24/7, making the old test pattern of television’s youth a thing of beauty and serenity by comparison.

Why, Michelle Obama is just like us now. She told us so. Barack Obama, too, is just average. Our leaders are no better, no worse, than the rest of us. Whew, that’s a relief. The old Republic with its old demands? It’s gone without a trace, replaced by this shiny new mega-democracy in which any distinctions between us and our betters have disappeared. Indeed, there are no more betters. We can all relax now.

We’re not only created equal, now we’re created the same. Local color? A sense of place? Distinctive architecture, accents, history, cuisine? How incorrect politically. Multicultural is the word now, meaning no distinct culture. We all blur. No one must stand out. Michelle is one of us!

This is what the image-makers call a re-introduction, and it worked. Listen to what one Arkansas delegate had to say on Mrs. Obama’s performance Monday night. Thurman Metcalf of Rogers, Ark., a cosmetologist himself, looked on The New Michelle and approved:

“She proved she’s real. She’s one of us.”

And isn’t that the highest compliment?

At least the Michelle Obama knows
how many siblings she has.We learn now Cindy McCain's half sister Kathleen Hensley Portalski(a Phoenix resident) who Cindy failed to mention said on the record she is voting for Obama along with her son.Now another half sister pops up Dixie Burd born to Mr Hensley and his first wife.I at least want my president to know how many houses they have and how many family members they forgot about.

She Won; You Lost
This is funny stuff. You folks have been attacking Michelle for months, accusing her of being a radical black revolutionary. There has been talk of a "whitey" film, of the extremism of her Princeton thesis, of her hating America.

With one speech, she wiped that out. She crushed your whole line of argument. Now the whole country has seen her as smart, opinionated, and very good looking, and your entire line of attack just looks stupid. As it was.

And no, Greenberg, she didn't transform herself into a Stepford Wife. We've had a Stepford Wife as First Lady for almost eight years; we know what they look like. No one who saw her speech thinks that Michelle will be a complete cipher the way the current one has been.

I'm surprised
...that there aren't more calls from the extreme side of the Left that Michelle Obama is an "Aunt Jemima" for her recent "performance."

"Bob Munck," she proved NOTHING
Speech after speech Michelle has spewed up more than enough anti-American drivel. "With one speech" all she proved is that she can use a teleprompter/script...nothing more than that.

Michelle who?
I thought it was Barack running for president.I would rather hear what his policies are regarding the economy, war on terror, energy, border security,or any issues he feels are important.Maybe he doesn't have a plan, who knows.I'm sure that undecided voters and non-partisan voters alike are really impressed with anything Michelle Obama has to say.I bet John McCain will give us another rundown on were he stands on the issues, instead of letting his wife entertain us with a good story

"Michael", it was BARACK...
...who put his wife, Michelle, "out there" on the public stage to speak politics and more over the past few months.

THAT is why this matters and is reasonable/legitimate to discuss.

Oh really? And with Obama half-siblings and step-siblings still coming out of the, er, woodwork?

How many more Hussein Obamas can we expect to come striding out of Kenya and other African countries, from their $1 per month shack residences, to wistfully detail their relationship to Obamas father, who apparently took as his motto *Find them, f*** them, forget them* and whose offspring apparently took the Forget Them part to heart?

You dont want to start bringing up lost siblings in the Obama camp. That space under the bus is getting mighty crowded.

P.S. Michelle Obama playing Harriet Nelson was a laff riot. I cant wait to see her urging on the riots in her Angela Davis Reality the day after her husband is shifted back to Chicago.

With few exceptions
this country has always elected solid leaders with proven experience to the presidency.

A comparison of these two men couldn't be more stark. Mccain has the gravitas and proven skills to be POTUS whereas obama is all hot air.

Paul's article is correct in pointing that out and the results in Nov will mirror the earlier elections he describes. Mccain will win and win big, we aren't sufficiently dumbed down to hand that job over to someone as green as obama.

Bobbie Munck
Good Gawd are you gullible for buying into the sistah's b.s. performance so completely. What a hoot it was for the informed.
Man,you've got to get off the Kool-aid,as you think she's "very good looking".
Puh-leeze,you find the feminized-masculine look attractive?Hav'nt you noticed how much babies "got-back"?Look closer next time fool.
STOP DRINKING,your brains drowning.

I hope you're right, but way too many voters are not looking at this soberly. Many are afraid to oppose Obama because they will be magically turned to racists, and many are caught up in attempting to make history. If enough of those people vote for those reasons, then Obama could very well win, especially against McCain who is still struggling to shore up his base and is trying to pick off enough disaffected Hillary supporters to put him over the top. If nothing else this should be interesting!

she still said something stupid...
Remember all these speeches where Barry claims that McCain and the GOP will say he's black and has a funny name? Well her first impression of her hubby was that he has a funny name! "Who would name their child Barack Obama? He must be weird!" That's a quote from her!!!

She's always good for saying something dumb. It'll slip up again sooner or later.

michelle-o-she-has a mad smile
she will work with new obama police task force,if the o-no one is elected.they will go door to door starting in rich neighbor hoods, pounding on doors, wearing heavy body armor, asking home owner, how many cars do you own?how many houses, how many pairs of shoes, how many pair of socks?obama-man,has sent us to take your extra stuff for the poor one to go to college,we will need the keys to your new BMW. mike texas

Billary!
The Obamas are the black Clintons -- power-hungry, ruthlessly ambitious, and willing to do or say anything or squish anybody to get elected!

BTW, didn't The Messiah declare that his little girls wouldn't be exploited after he paraded them for Entertainment Tonight? That lasted about 5 minutes!

Michelle Obama
may well be a proud wife, if not a proud American.

But one speech does not a character re-make. Her prior comments meant something and not only so, they branded her for good or ill. That's the way it goes when you put yourself out there. Not up to us to believe what she says now, it's up to her to prove herself if given the chance. Then we'll believe, but frankly I doubt she'll get that chance.

And now that we have a "career woman" VP-nominee (who BTW has a newborn Down's baby), would you care to revisit the Stepford comparison?

Sarah Palin just brought up a good point

Exactly WHAT HAS Marxist Obama done for this country????

Editor
Mr Greenberg: A joy to have you as local editor. Subjects are timely, columns are clear and precise, arguement leaves nothing else to say. Glad to tell folks your day job.

And with his VP pick of Biden, he actually managed to triple (at least) the delivery of that commodity.

Mr. Greenberg, well said
"We’re not only created equal, now we’re created the same. Local color? A sense of place? Distinctive architecture, accents, history, cuisine? How incorrect politically. Multicultural is the word now, meaning no distinct culture. We all blur. No one must stand out. "

My word, and I was beginning to think no one notices any more.

Michelle Quoted "Rules for Radicals"
If you thought from her speech at the DNC that Michelle and Barack Obama are typical middle class families, then it appears that you have been mislead. The blogs are now covering Barack's connection to terrorist William Ayers, and now it appears that Michelle leans in the same direction. In her DNC speech, Michelle quoted Saul Alinksy's book, "Rules for Radicals". Michelle talked about "the world as it is" and said we are obligated to FIGHT for "the world as it should be." These phrases are from Chapter 2 of Marxist Saul Alinsky's book, Rules for Radicals.

Alinsky states that lying for political gain is a moral act. So if Michelle and BHO are playing by those rules, can you really trust them?

She's made her verbal bed
Sorry, Michelle made her bed months ago, spouting her negative view of the country that has given her and her hubby so much...and America and the alternative media were definitely listening...

I doubt most thinking Americans will be fooled by her convention "June Cleaver" act.
