Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

“Corporate social responsibility” doctrine says companies must act ethically and further the well-being of society – not merely seek to improve market shares and bottom lines.

Ethical behavior is an essential element of business and capitalism. Companies that violate laws and societal norms are eventually found out – and punished, by courts and consumers.

But this raises an often overlooked question that all CSR advocates should ask:

Shouldn’t society demand that every corporation chartered under its aegis (for-profit and not-for-profit alike) will promote societal well-being? Shouldn’t charities, government agencies, legislatures and activist groups be held to the same CSR standards as profit-based industries?

By any rational standard, preventing dangerous diseases promotes societal well-being – and actions that perpetuate disease contravene basic CSR principles.

A century ago, Dr. William Gorgas eradicated yellow fever and dramatically reduced malaria in Panama. He eliminated or poured kerosene on standing water, to prevent malaria-carrying Anopheles mosquitoes from laying eggs and larvae from developing; fumigated areas infested with adult mosquitoes; and used nets to isolate infected patients and prevent them from being bitten and spreading the disease.

But today malaria still infects 500 million people a year, leaving them unable to work for weeks, rendering many permanently brain-damaged, and killing over a million parents and children.

And yet, politicians, foundations, activists and bureaucrats continue to promote false solutions. If accepted CSR standards were applied to them, many would be bankrupt, ostracized or imprisoned.

The United Nations, Al Gore, Senator Barbara Boxer, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, President Obama and others claim malaria is spreading due to global warming. The UN even pays African officials to host conferences that promote this party line.

The assertion boosts their anti-hydrocarbon agendas. It also shifts the blame and limited resources away from real solutions to pricey, politically correct schemes that actually perpetuate disease and death.

Malaria was prevalent in Virginia, Ohio, California the Netherlands and beyond, until DDT helped eradicate it. The disease killed 600,000 people in Siberia during the 1920s and 1930s. Obviously malaria's presence and geographical distribution is not defined by temperature alone.

Informed, comprehensive control measures reduce or eliminate malaria, note infectious disease experts Paul Reiter and Donald Roberts, even in tropical areas. When we let nature take its course, or apply partial or politically correct solutions, malaria spreads and people die.

With funding from San Francisco’s Richard and Rhoda Goldman Foundation, the Pesticide Action Network (PAN) helps nature take its course, by battling insecticide and DDT use. Their tunnel-visioned actions might protect the world’s most impoverished, disease-ridden people from minor speculative risks associated with insecticides – but they do so by imposing massive, immediate, life-threatening risks from diseases the insecticides could prevent.

The Gates Foundation supports fascinating research on anti-malaria vaccines and mosquitoes genetically engineered to be unable to carry malaria parasites. The work may pay off big time in a decade or two – assuming we can vaccinate 2 billion people who are at risk from getting malaria, or replace trillions of Anopheles mosquitoes with biotech varieties. But meanwhile, every year, a half billion people will become too sick to work, and a million will die, from a readily preventable disease.

“Nothing but nets” is a catchy basketball slogan, but a lousy disease prevention strategy. Bed net campaigns promise a few dollars will save a life, but actual malaria reductions are closer to 20-30% when recipients use their nets every night, no matter how sweltering it gets in their non-air-conditioned homes.

Truly comprehensive programs can slash malaria disease and death rates by 90% or even eradicate it completely. How is it ethical to promote anything less?

Yet, far too many companies, even ExxonMobil, won’t use or promote DDT, for fear of being attacked by PAN and its ilk. And some well-meaning innovators promote even more far-fetched “solutions,” like giant mosquito vacuums – for villages that don’t even have electricity.

These inadequate prevention strategies put the onus on often primitive clinics, overworked doctors and scarce, overused drugs to stop malaria. New Artemisia-based combination therapies (ACTs) have been a godsend, especially in Africa, where chloroquine is no longer effective.

But the more heavily they are used – because prevention efforts are constricted and misdirected – the sooner it is likely that malaria parasites will become resistant to ACT drugs. That likelihood is increased by companies like Erica in India that still distribute oral artemisinin mono-therapy tablets, which are more likely to result in resistant strains of malaria. Worse, increasing numbers of malaria medications distributed in Africa and elsewhere are substandard or even counterfeit knockoffs.

And too many governments of malaria-ridden countries do a horrendous job of safeguarding their people against these unscrupulous practices.

Malaria victims can ill afford such sick, fraudulent, irresponsible “social responsibility.” Human rights, and human lives, are at stake.

The world has limited money, especially amid this global recession. African nations are particularly destitute. Funds and resources need to be applied wisely, effectively and ethically.

First, we must do no harm – by focusing attention on bogus causes like global warming, for instance, or restricting malaria prevention to partial solutions like bed nets and drugs. Second, we must do actual good, by slashing malaria rates NOW.

It doesn’t take rocket science – just a modern version of what Gorgas used 100 years ago. Vastly improved tools are readily available. We need to use them.

Truly comprehensive programs include DDT on walls to keep mosquitoes out of houses, bed nets to further protect children and adults, and insecticides to control mosquito populations. These steps alone can prevent 80% or more of malaria cases. But other interventions must also be employed, if infections and deaths are to be eliminated.

Health ministries and aid agencies must help ensure that doctors have modern clinics closer to more villages, can quickly determine if a patient really has malaria, and have the proper ACT drugs to treat cases. They and field personnel must maintain systems to monitor mosquito populations and disease outbreaks on a continuing basis, and feed data into computerized command centers.

Communities must become better educated about the causes and symptoms of malaria, and how to eliminate brush and mosquito breeding areas from around homes. Larvacides can be used to kill mosquito larvae. Incentives and oversight must ensure that programs are working properly.

The number of nets distributed is irrelevant. The only valid test is malaria cases and deaths prevented.

A comprehensive program is a socially responsible program. Anything less is insufficient and immoral.

Liberals
will kill many and ruin the rest of us financially with their good intentions, but that is ok, if they feel good about themselves for trying.

MMaddox
"And were and are CLUELESS about Socialism and Marxism."

Include yourself!

Republicans have many brands of socialism of their own. Of course, they never talk about them, but nevertheless, it comes in many forms. One form is bailing out huge companies. Take AIG, for example, they have now sucked at the teat of the government sow to the tune of $160 billion. That's $500 smackeroos per American.

That Republican give-away took money from all Americans and gave it to the executives who have successfully run AIG into the ground. AIG is the insurance giant, that once they got their greedy hands on some taxpayer's money, went to a fancy spa, got rub-downs and drank fine champagne. Executives in this fine company increased their deferred compensation and gave themselves enormous bonuses. Talk about feeding at the government trough. George Bush, Hank Paulson and Ben Bernanke certainly knew how to take care of some of their friends.

In sum, it is yet another Republican example of the ruthless expropriation of wealth from the American downtrodden toiling strata to those in the upper strata.

"if they feel good about themselves for trying."

Did George Bush and Hank Paulson felt good about their Republican wealth-redistribution?

Republicans too, have many quiet brands of socialism. They use fancy phrases like, "We need to inject capital into the financial sector.(Hank Paulson)" Sounds fancy, well, you should have held onto your wallet.

Who was we? 'We' was the American taxpayer. What is capital? 'Capital is taxpayer's money. What is the financial sector? The 'financial sector' is certain Republican-donating banks.

Bush and Paulson gave their favorite banks $250 billion. What did those banks do with that money? All paid dividends to their precious stockholders. This is the most envious of government teat-sucking of all. Wealth-redistribution in a time of war and financial meltdown is the most distasteful and disrespectful of capitalism possible.

That Republican give-away takes money from Main Street and gives it to the banks' owners. George Bush and Hank Paulson certainly knew how to take care of their friends. In sum, it is yet another example of the ruthless expropriation of wealth from the American downtrodden toiling strata to those in the upper strata.

Unfortunately, for we conservatives, President Hussein put a stop to this most onerous form of Republican-socialist wealth-redistribution.

wth
do any of your postings have to do with the subject in the article, zapdoodat?
Are you paid per post by the DailyKOS?
I'm afraid that your BDS is terminal.

Political incorectness
Two points to ponder: what are we saving people from if they don't get malaria but they still live in abject poverty and live to be abject haters of the US, and unless a substitute for the Anopholes mosquito fills the void in the food chain, what are the ramification? Ultimately, an effective innoculation to keep people from getting the didease would be preferrable to erradicating an important part of the food chain, and the spread of deocracy and prosperity will give them something to live for.

Amen to this gutsy author
Let's keep speaking out, folks, before it is too late. We need more "in your face" approaches to "truthing" (to borrow from the Leftwing Nuts) about what liberalism is really all about. Let's start getting it out there and not being shy about it. Timidity will not help our cause of freedom. Time is running out, people.

Barack Obama "I Won"

Remember when Barack Obama showed his derision towards the TARP CEO’s for their private jets and their taxpayer paid Las Vegas trip plans, and saying "the party is over"?

Well Barack Obama has a date with Michelle on Valentines day - certainly nothing wrong with that - in fact that is a good thing.

The date is in Chicago, IL.

Obama flew to Chicago Thursday morning, then back to Washington, DC, Thursday night, presumably for something about the 'Stimulus Bill'.

Obama then flew back to Chicago for his date Friday morning.

Where is his 'Carbon Credits' for his date?

Henry Waxman did a cost analysis on Presidential travel in March of 2006, trying to make then President George Bush reimburse the government, for what Waxman called personal travel.

Using Waxmans figures, Air Force One cost $322,153 and the cargo plane cost $55,494. For a grand total of $377,647 for Mr. Obama’s three round trips, for his date.

Will Waxman demand Barack Obama reimburse the government for the 'Obama Date'?

funny
You've got to be kidding me! Do you really expect people in this day and age of Obama worship and global warming hysteria to use common sense? This commentary is the funniest of the week. The country and the world are under strong delusion. This is no time for serious, common sense solutions; this is the time to spend big bucks on non-sense. This government is so funny; who needs comedians anymore, they're all working for government now.

CSR also hits in many other areas
When reading this I was hoping another CSR area would be touched upon and was disappointed not to see it mentioned, and that is the subject of the promotion of "alternate lifestyles", which is not only unhealthy physically and mentally for the individuals involved, but unhealthy for society. I work for a "family-friendly" corporation (which I love) that unfortunately is slowly succumbing to this craziness. And the odd thing about all of this is that I don't believe just ignoring it would have the dire consequences they think it would.

Libs. have helped kill 40,000,000
unborn babies since Roe in 1972 and 35,000,000 others worldwide (mostly children) from malaria since the 1972 ban on DDT internationally.

When the trolls on TH come hear to whine and pewl over *the children,* how they don't all have perfect med. ins., how we need more money for *family planning*(abortion), give them the above facts.

Excellent, Mr. Driessen
Being a survivor of malaria while in Viet Nam I can attest to all of the points made.

I could not tolerate the weekly chloroquine tablet, spending most of my Mondays after taking the weekly dose, in the latrine. I tried for many months, but never got used to the dreaded, big orange tablet, so I ditched it if the Sarge wasn't looking. The primaquine I took daily didn't affect my system as much, but by itself could not prevent the two varieties of malaria I contracted at once, and damn near died from.

I have to take partial blame, but poor netting was the ultimate cause. We had complained and complained about the tattered mosquito nets in our guard bunkers, inside which most of us spent every other night.

After I got sick, the Colonel FINALLY issued new nets for everybody. Ultimately, a little DDT would have gone a LONG WAY.

Thank you, Rachel Carson - stoopid beitch!

zippydoodah,
Way to go, deflect and dissemble.

Any idea on who started the run on the market in Sept? $550 BILLION electronically sucked out in 15 minutes would scare the heck out of anyone. Bush must have been pretty shaken to turn from everything he knows to be right and shovel all that money down a rathole.

Obama voted for the package so he must have been scared too, or at least nervous. Or not! His puppetmasters like George Soros and Communist China were probably behind it.

I wish I had the certitude of you dippy liberals - oh wait, I have too much integrity to make it up as I go along and ignore the truth right in front of my face.

Never underestimate the ability of despicable dhimmicrats to lie, manipulate, and cheat in order to fool enough people and achieve ultimate power.

Filthy Stalinists!

Obama Doctrine: Anyone working is Rich

Barack Obama first said people making over $250k were rich, then $150k, then $100k and NOW you are rich if you make over $75k - soon to be anyone making over minimum wage.

Those making UNDER $75k will get $13 a week to stimulate the economy - everyone else must pay more taxes.

Will the Barack Obama 'Change', finally say anyone who works is rich?

zap
What republican bailout?

The so-called Bush bailout, HR1424 if you care to check it, was passed by a democrat congress and senate. Barney Frank was the floor manager for that bill and Nancy Pelosi did the keynote summary speaking in favor of the bill.

How does that make it a republican bailout? The president can propose but it takes congress to pass legislation.

Try and get your facts straight for a change.

CSR
CSR is a creature of the left. I first saw reference to it in the 1962 Port Huron statement at the formation of SDS.

Even in the face of proof that DDT didn't do any of the things ascribed to it, leftists cling to these discredited ideas. I'm still reading that Valerie Plame was a covert operative when it has long been established that she was not.

We are constantly being crippled by people in authority who seek political advantage by ignoring reality and commonsense.

Malaria is a real threat and DDT is a real answer. Not only that, it's cheap!

Sgt Relic
Well said!

I recall that most democrats voted for the bill, many more than republicans.

I also recall republicans weeping, wailing and gnashing their teeth in opposition to the bill. If there was a democrat who opposed the bill openly in front of God and everybody, I didn't see him/her.

Sgt Relic
you took my post!

Amazing that they still hold DDT as an evil killer while Malaria continues to be spread. They do live in their own little worlds, while people continue to die from this disease and ask for ways to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.

It reminds me of Chicago's gun ban. More people die there than any other city in the US, even more than Iraq this year, yet the left hold guns as evil. They really do not see reality correctly.

Sgt Relic & Seadog
Fuggedaboudit, guys. Bush will be blamed for all that happened to the country in the last two years of his administration--when the Democrats controlled EVERYTHING except executive orders.

And he gets the blame for causing everything by his massive "deregulation," when it was Democrats (Frank, Dodd, even Maxine "under the excellent guidance of Franklin Raines" Waters) who stopped the tighter regulation of Fannie & Freddie for which Bush (and McCain) almost BEGGED early in his administration and which might well have headed off our magnificent "mortgage crisis."

Eric
Don't discount the possibility that the DDT-deniers just don't care that all those African people die--or may even welcome their deaths.

There's no other logical reason for their intransigence.

Obama has failed every Judgment Test

Selecting Tax Cheats for the Obama cabinet.

An Attorney General who thinks American Citizens are 'Cowards'.

Rod Blagojevich - whom Obama campaigned for and endorsed - is just one of the many 'Nefarious' characters which Barack Obama has aligned himself.

Tony Rezko - convicted felon - and Obama had several business dealings.

Obama started his political career in the home of Bill Ayers - unrepentant terrorist.

Ali Abunimah head of a radical Palestanian group received contributions from Obama.

Barack Obama chose his Mentor and spiritual adviser, Jeremiah 'God Damn America' Wright.

The list seems endless - read about more of them on my blog.

http://hisfacts.blogtownhall.com/2008/10/21/obamas_radical_ and_communist_alliances.thtml

The only consistency Barack Obama has shown in his career is 'Bad Judgment'.

DDT Resistant Mosquitoes!
If you'll key these words on the Internet you'll find [from a number of credible sources] that the DDT issues not so simple as you pretend.

CSR is a separate issue. My son handles investments for a large public employee retirement fund. His job is to maximize the returns for thousands of fund members. The member-appointed investment committee restricts certain investments because of social concerns. For instance, a corporation which earns more than a certain percentage of their income from pornography...no matter how profitable the smut which poisons the mind of society...is strictly off limits. I agree with that CSR philosophy...but I'm not a little surprised that the political right wing, religious right, unfettered free enterprise element which the columnist represents would "take the SMUT money and run". Hypocrites!

Jim-Too

Resistance doesn't matter
Spraying hut walls with DDT with keep mosquitos aways for days or weeks, it doesn't have to kill them.

CSR
I have heard so much about CSR that I could puke. I am sick to death of the advertising by these morons as well. WHEN WILL AMERICAN COMPANIES WAKE UP?

Who is John Galt?

DDT also stopped lice in its tracks!
My grandmother used to be very proud of that fact that her children never got lice. Come to find out, it was because North Dakota where they lived used a lot of DDT as pesticide on the farms. I've heard that in Minnesota they used to use it to prevent malaria, but I haven't found a variafiable reference for that; just what a friend's grandfather told me (he was a farmer in MN in the Depression).

Lice was rampant in the cities, away from DDT, but farmers didn't have it across the nation. Now lice is everywhere! It's not the big problem like malaria, but we really ought to be considering how the lack of DDT usage has affected us in this country. Some lice medications can and do cause brain damage in small children if over used. As far as anyone has reported, DDT has never caused a human death and some scientists are skeptical that it actually caused egg-shell collapse as Rachel Carson insisted that it did. Apparently, her hypothesis might have been taken as actual proven fact when in fact, it was still a hypothesis that is still without support.

Malaria prevention
Here, here Mr. Driessen. Right you are.

Jim
In spite of your articles about DDT resistant mosquitoes, the truth remains; we can save millions of lives today by using DDT.

Do you disagree? Do you care about people's lives?

Unbelievable!
We have a proven method to save African lives, yet the left won't let it happen!

Oh, those stupid conservatives! Oh, how the evil conservatives don't care! The dumb conservatives are so blinded by their ties to the right-wing Christians they don't care about the poor Africans!

Well, liberals, what do you say? Do we save lives today, or not? We stupid, evil, self-serving conservative Christians say use the DDT to save lives!

What do you say?

Dr Douglas
I wonder why the Doctor has not posted how this author is a hate-monger?

More Ms Carson Fans, I See!!
I've been sneakin in a post about Silent Spring & Rachel Carson every once in awhile, but didn't see any response.. If U've never read the the Book, PLEASE try to struggle thru it..I'm sure the lady meant well but she had her head so far in her hind- end only her hands protruded!! As I've posted before, Family Members used to spend MANY summers is SS Africa drilling water wells, but malaria was one of the reasons they left. Hostility/Vandalism also.
U have to WONDER!!

CSR the latest trojan horse of the left
A great article Paul -
Until people realize that to every problem there is a solution - and the solution also has an accompanying problem, we will never find the best cure. We have to work with the existing technology each time - that is all we have. We can solve as much as possible but nothing is 100 percent. We can arrive at 85% of a solution fairly easily, but the last 15% is a tough nut. So for a corporation to be 100% CSR is a real stretch. But we should all strive for that goal. Look at the Kyoto Accords-- It said that each industrial nation must do X and and all undeveloped nations could do Y until they arrived at a level of production of nations of X. Then they must also meet X standards. Is this completely stupid or what? All polution goes up into the atmosphere regardless of where it originates. A forest fire in Africa and a forest fire in England both pollute. So does the Al Gore BS treaty make any sense. Let us have undeveloped countries go ahead and operate in their old way and pollute like hell and let's stop industrialized countries from producing in a less polluting manner. Wake up and smell the roses. Someone has to feed, clothe and transport the world and it better done by a fully developed industrial country than some third rate dictatorship. All of this CSR and the other BS that goes with it is just BS period. We have all of the laws we need. When we find a company violating the rules put the hammer on them, they will understand the economics of the situation very quickly.
