Do you feel the leaked information from a global warming alarmist organization is meaningful?

Sarbanes-Oxley and the 2006 elections supposedly inaugurated a new congressional commitment to ethics, transparency, accountability and consumer protection. Something has been lost in translation.

The “energy” bill now wending its way through the legislative labyrinth dedicates $6 billion to goodies like more energy-efficient snowmobiles for ski resorts, outlaws “price gouging” at the gas pump, and sets new mileage standards that will likely make cars and light trucks less safe and cost more lives. It also provides subsidies and mandates for politically correct “alternative” energy projects that probably wouldn’t survive without such aid.

But the bill doesn’t increase the nation’s energy supply by one drop of gasoline or one watt of electricity, says Congressman Jim McCrery (R-LA). It lifts no bans on oil and gas drilling, and does nothing to ease regulatory impediments to pipelines, transmission lines, refineries, or coal and nuclear generating plants. The only power it generates is expanded bureaucratic power over energy and economic decisions.

Its ethanol mandates will result in more land converted from wildlife habitat to corn fields, and in greater use of water, fertilizer, pesticides, and tractor and truck fuel. Corn prices will continue to rise, along with the cost of meat, candy, soft drinks and other products that use corn for feed or corn syrup as a sweetener. The biofuel itself will cost more, but provide less mileage per tank.

Expanded wind power will mean more 300-foot-tall “cuisinarts” killing birds and bats, marring once-scenic vistas, and feeding into hundred-mile transmission lines – to provide expensive, intermittent electricity that has to be backed up by natural-gas-fired generators. It may even take more energy to mine and process the ores and manufacture the turbines and transmission lines and towers, than is generated during the productive lifetime of wind turbines, which only work about 30% of the time.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has proposed to make Congress “carbon neutral” in its electricity use. How this is possible without building separate transmission lines and condemning private property for rights-of-way, to get electricity from wind and solar farms to Capitol Hill, she doesn’t say.

Even less ethical is the rush to “do something” about global warming. Assorted climate change bills propose to slash US carbon dioxide emissions by varying amounts, under different timetables, to prevent speculative catastrophes conjured up by computer models that do not reflect complex atmospheric processes and cannot predict temperature or climate one year in the future, much less 40 or 90.

The worst of the lot (Sanders-Boxer) would compel the United States to go even further than the Kyoto Protocol requires. It would compel CO2 emission cuts of 15% below 2006 levels by 2020, and 83% below 2006 levels by 2050 – presumably without increasing nuclear power.

Such mandates might help special interests – which are lining up to proclaim “consensus” on climate change and claim their share of any entitlements. But they would severely impact US energy production, transportation, agriculture, manufacturing, workers and families.

An MIT analysis concludes that Sanders-Boxer would cost the US up to $403 billion in foregone Gross Domestic Product, corresponding to a loss of some 4.5 million jobs and an impact of $5370 per family of four. The Sanders-Boxer, Feinstein and Waxman bills would result in carbon offset allowances priced at $210 per ton of CO2, adding a truly price-gouging $95 to the cost of a barrel of oil, $2 to a gallon of gasoline, $143 to a ton of coal, and 50% to the price of electricity, by 2020.

Domestic production of goods and services would plummet, and families with low incomes or living in regions with high heating or air-conditioning needs would be disproportionately affected, as they would have to spend much higher portions of their incomes on energy, food and consumer products.

MIT’s evaluation presumes developing countries would match our emission cutbacks. It’s more likely that they would prefer to reap the benefits of more energy at lower prices, to fuel economies, create jobs and improve living standards. Few of them perceive a need to address climate disasters that they view as largely hypothetical or due to wealthy Western countries.

The US Energy Information Administration calculated that Kyoto mandates (CO2 emission reductions to 5% below 1990 levels) could cost up to 2.5 million jobs and reduce our GDP by up to $525 billion annually – equivalent to a tax of $7,000 on every family of four.

Wharton’s Business School of Economics determined that Kyoto would cost 2.3% of America’s GDP. At $12 trillion in 2006, that translates into $275 billion a year or $3700 per family. Continued...

CRY WOLF
You know this story is starting to turn out like the MAN WHO CRIED WOLF. There seems to be alot of people and groups that he referenced on in the beginneing starting to jump boat on this one. I wonder why? The more and more that the PEEPS see and inform themselves about GLOBULL WARMING the more they are starting to look away.
The DEMS like to blame bug business for all the problems while they line their pockets with our money and laugh all the way to the bank. Driving their BIG SUV back to their 25000 SQ FT homes they own and complain that the rich are getting richer. TWO AMERICAS MY A**. I think i saw the wolf eat NANCY P. whose 100 day plan I have yet to see.

A good start, but......
You know, the article starts off by pointing out real weaknesses like the boondoggle that is ethanol and the stagnation on nuclear energy, butt then develops quickly into your typical right wing ignorant treatment of climate science. Cherrypick 1998 much?

Here's what's funny about funding...
Liberals are quick to call foul when they here about a couple thousand dollar grant being given to various institutes by oil companies.
From the moment the grant is given, it taints everything coming out of that institute as bought by big oil, especially if 5 or 10 years down the line that institute puts out a report giving evidence that Global Warming might not be caused by CO2 emmisions. Wow, it's amazing how far a couple of thousands of dollars can stretch. I don't know of any single person that would find living on an annual salary of a couple of thosand dollars as appealing, let alone an Institute. Especially when the institute has to bring in knowledgeable people to write up this report. Let's see... an Institute is given $5,000 dollars by an oil company... 5 years later that institute brings in experts to counter global warming claims. The Institute has to pay the salaries of the executive and any staffers. Let's say that it's a small "fake" institute with 3 people running it and they bring in 2 experts to write a report 5 years from the time they recieved the oil grant. The 3 people of the institute would have to split $1,000 dollars a year amongst themselves and then in the year the report came out, split $1,000 with the experts. This would amount to be $200 each on the year the report comes out. Wow, big oil really got away with a cheap way to get a report out that says that CO2 emissions might not cause Global Warming.

Let's look on the other side of the coin. How much do environmentalists get every year to "research" climate change? Global Warming in itself is a multi-BILLION dollar industry. Why, the environmentalists have even BLACKMAILED the oil industry into helping fund the Global Warming fraud not just directly, but also through the constant raising of taxes on our fuel prices. Not only that, but our government and other world government's are deeply involved with spending loads of taxpayer money on this monolithic hoax.
And then there are CARBON CREDITS. You know the things that Al Gore claims makes himself CARBON NEUTRAL. So those of us who choose not to cut any and all oil out of our lives, can become environmentally aware by paying someone else to go plant a tree. Who are we paying to go do it? Why that would be Al Gore himself! Actually, he wouldn't be planting the tree himself. He would be paying people to go do it, all the while bringing in a nice salary. In fact he only has to put a small portion of his salary back into the company to consider himself CARBON NEUTRAL. How nice, he gets to put out more carbon emissions than 20 Americans, all the while promoting his movie to gain more Carbon credit customers, gain a salary for doing so (because people are paying him just to speak about his movie, not even mentioning the salary he get through his Carbon Credit companies), and then claim that he is CARBON Neutral, while collecting a salary for that too.

This is what the Libs call good buisness. Get the Government and other companies to fund them while they scare the crap out of people, with pseudo-science and snake oil, to get the people to by their fake "save the world" credits. Anybody who speaks out against it is villified as being paid by the oil companies.

This is what is called FRAUD!!! If any corporation tried to get away with this, the Libs would have the government completely dismantle it.
On Wall Street, this would be considered insider trading. Where they buy stocks in a company, create false news stories to inflate the stocks, and then sell the stocks before anyone realized that they had just been played. The Global Warming scandal is the exact same thing that Enron got busted for.

LOL, Anne!
Let common sense prevail!

"Alarmist global warming claims melt
under scientific scrutiny"

http://www.suntimes.com/news/otherviews/450392,CST-EDT-REF30b.article
June 30, 2007
BY JAMES M. TAYLOR

"In his new book, The Assault on Reason, Al Gore pleads, "We must stop tolerating the rejection and distortion of science. We must insist on an end to the cynical use of pseudo-studies known to be false for the purpose of intentionally clouding the public's ability to discern the truth." Gore repeatedly asks that science and reason displace cynical political posturing as the central focus of public discourse."

The rest of the article is really quite good. :-)

BrianR: You floated that before...

and I checked it out. Guess what? You were RIGHT!

Geez, who knew? And, you know what else I found out? It happens on a fairly regular basis... like every year! That's amazing! :-)

Brian, you are just so smart! algore should be listening to YOU! :-)

Anne, you forgot!
Some of the same dudes hyping "globull warming" now were hyping "globull cooling" 25 years ago!

HOWEVER, as the Most High Prognosticater, I predict for the Northern Hemisphere: Global Warming for the next three months, followed by Global Cooling. I have dubbed these cycles "Summer" for the first, to be immediately followed by "Autumn". Additionally and alarmingly, "Autum's" cooling cycle will be followed by an even deeper period of cooling, which I shall dub "Winter".

But. if my predictions are accurate, there is hope, because after a period reflecting the movement of the Earth around about 1/4 of its path of the rotation around a solar body called the Sun, "Winter" should yield to a warming trend known as "Spring".

All we can do at this point is cross our fingers and hope.....

MassLib: Man, this is killin' you isn't

it???

EVERYPLACE is funded by some group...so that's a stupid argument.

You're just not going to deal with reality, are you?

Going to be a rough road for a while. Wonder how you and your ga-lo-bal warming blinded fanatics are eventually going to deal with the fact that you've not only been lied to, but you bought it, hook, line, and sinker, and made such a fool fo yourself doing so.

Just remember, some of these "climatologists" who are now saying that it's bunk, were the same ones you insisted were right, and cited when they were baking the ga-lo-bal warming myth. Huh???

Oh well. LOL

LOL, Goshawk
You're a hoot, mon!

Well put BrinR
And it is sad indeed that the common person does not even know that these things are happening to them.

Pizza? Only if it's a full combo! Everything on it! Hurry! I've got shows to watch!

Sadly, Goshawk
I am not sanguine. BTW, thanks for the kind words.

But in order to make informed decisions, one has to actually *think*, which means taking the time to actually learn about the issues, which means one might miss an episode of "American Idol".

Can't have THAT!

We on this site and others like it -- from both sides of the ideological aisle -- are not typical of Joe Average, who doesn't give much thought to politics until a couple of days before the next election. The scamnesty outrage and uprising was a very unusual event, and the politicians were counting on business as usual. It's also what AlBore and the Hysterics (sounds like a 60s singing group) are counting on in foisting this Anthropogenic Global Warming scam over on everyone: a slick PowerPoint ("An Inconvenient Truth") coupled with an impenetrable din out of which no one can make any sense. Get the Panic Train rolling out of the station; no one will want to miss it, because who knows when the next one's scheduled to show up?

Unfortunately, Juvenal made the same observations about the collapse of the Roman Empire, a society that had become weakened by its excesses to the point where all the people were concerned about was "bread and circuses".

Want some pizza while you watch that next episode of "Survival: Tahiti"?

BrianR
LOL! Your wit and satire in relation to facts. Is so telling! Your so right in assuming that a good part of Americans still believe the way you describe. So your comment demands a question.

In your opinion, do you think the American people, in general, will wake up and take action to this stupidity!? Or do you think that we as citizens will stand by, and watch our country (our Republic) give into this force of Socialism?

MassachusettsLiberal
You seem to be more concerned with the funding sources of the institute the author works for than with the validity of the observations of the experts he sites; or, with the reality that some of Gore's "Inconvenient Truths" are inconveniently untruthful.

flush the toilet
congress is like a full toilet. Let's flush it and get rid of the crap

Haven't you heard?
The debate is over! There's a scientific consensus!

AGW enjoys the support of a “scientific consensus”?

Hmmm.

Here are some other ideas that were the accepted scientific dogma of their day:

The Earth is flat.

The Sun and the Universe revolve around the Earth.

If trains ever exceed 20 MPH, the passengers will suffocate as the air in the cars won’t be able to keep up.

There are canals of water on Mars.

There’s air all the way from the Earth to the Moon.

The speed of sound is an impenetrable barrier.

There are dragons and sea monsters in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

The atom is the smallest particle.

Malaria is caused by bad air (hence the name).

And there are many others. Consensus is overrated.

teachermom
The "evil" rich. Haven't you been paying attention? ;-)

and we will all be good little subjects
with our hands out for government "goodies"

but wait who is going to pay for it all?

COMRADES HIL and PEL will save us
Communists
Hillary Hugo Chavez Clinton
Party Leader Comrade PELOSI
and all of their comrades will confiscate:

First: the oil companies
second: talk radio

and the world will be perfect again:

Just like the ban on dodge ball and sledding in Iowa for kids and ban on the BOY Scouts etc.

they will take care of all of us:

GORE did zero when in Charge
DO NOT PLAY THE BLAME GAME

ANY NORMAL fair and honest person knows

GORE as VEEP
GORE in the Senate for blah blah years

DID ZERO on "climate" issues

NOW HE BLAMES BUSH:: GIVE ME A FRIGGIN
BREAK

HILLARY HUGO Chavez Clinton, communist will
take control of the OIL companies, that WE THE PEOPLE OWN (as shareholders) and solve all
of our problems, she claims:

SHE HAD HER CHANCE ONCE as CO PRESIDENT
and failed miserably
NOW she is running for CO PRESIDENT again
she has zero credibility

DEMS tried to swindle USA Citizens
WHY would anyone trust the DEM controlled
HOUSE
SENATE
ever again on any ISSUE

WE caught them in the biggest SWINDLE the USA
citizen Act with their Scamnesty bill.

PELOSI needs to STOP the Blame game

SHE IS IN CHARGE
HARRY is in CHARGE

THEY ARE 100% liable for control of what
comes from "congress"

WE will never be able to trust them again on
any issue after this Scamnesty swindle attempt.

All the wrong moves
For Frey:

Radlad and desk jockey have nailed it on Europes's alleged better economic growth since 1998. Which by the way is an interesting year to start measuring, since that is EXACTLY when the junk-bond phony dot-com bubble "Clinton-boom" alchemy began to show its true colors as the economy went south due to Slick Willie's tax increase. Whose economy has grown the most since Bush cut taxes? Hmmmmm? BTW - I am in no position to assess the accuracy of info obtained from IMF, but it is a liberal, open borders, one-world-government, quasi-communist organization and I don't trust it for one second to be impartial in either the gathering of its data or the reporting of it.

For Moonbat Exterminator:

You forgot to mention that Jennifer also had to sell half of Michigan's future revenue from the Big Tobacco lawsuit to speculators just to balance the budget this year. And all the while she was trying to force Mike Bishop, the Republican leader in Michigan's Senate, to raise business taxes, the state sales tax, and anything else she could think of, to not only avoid cutting spending (she probably thinks she will melt like the wicked witch of the west if she does this) but to also allow her to INCREASE grants and aid to college students who can't afford tuition because the unionized teachers/professors/administrators at Michigan's universities (state employees) aren't about to allow their 6-figure salaries and bennies to be reduced so the state can remain solvent.

It's no wonder that recent poll, taken just seven months after she was re-elected, shows that if the election were held today she would lose.

For charlie:

Your assessment of Kennedy is off the mark. He may indeed hate America, but he isn't smart enough to do anything to hurt her except by accident. The guy is as dumb as a board. You've heard all the jokes about how a man has a brain and a sex organ and only one heart to pump blood to both. Well, we know where the swimmer's heart has been pumping his blood for the last 40+ years.

For NEConservative:

Pelosi is not only a "horrible" Marxist, she is also an incompetent one. Any halfway competent Marxist knows you don't tip your hand until it's too late for the proletariat to stop you from taking control of the country.

For nanna:

A recent poll showed that more Dems want Gore for Prez than want Mrs. Clinton. Brace yourself

This author does a great job. He gives clear, concise points about how this Congress will enact legislation that will do nothing to alleviate our energy dependence or reduce the amount of CO2 we emit, but will instead wreak havoc on our economy. But global warming whackos can rest easy. When the tax cuts expire and the economy slips back into the recession that Slick Willie bequeathed us just before he stole the White House silverware on his way out the door our CO2 emissions will also recede.

The only problem we will have then will be feeding ourselves.

For all who care
to read my opinion. And it is, just my opinion. I believe we, The People, have allowed the most Socialistic/Communistic group of people to take over our congress. These communistic S.O.B's Are so arrogant in their endeavors. They act as though they are Gods themselves! We must do all we can to eliminate these people from the face of politics! To never again allow this Socialist trash in office!

As it is, it will take generations to correct or undue the damage they're doing to our country!

Ethics Is Not The Issue Here
Bill Clinton is precluded from being President ever again by virtue of the 22d Amendment to the Constitution which was ratified by 3/4 of the States ( pursuant to Article V of the Constitution). Due to his demonstrated history of lying to the people and perjury before a Grand Jury for which he was formally Impeached,
Bill Clinton should not be allowed in the White House. He is not trustworthy. If any President could presumably be influenced by the equities (stock) they own leading to a requirement to sale or putting them in a "Blind Trust", how much influence could the man, precluded from leading the country by Constitutional provision, have on his President wife. She has stated we will get 2 for one if she is elected. Bill Clinton should be in effect "persona non grata" and/or recuse himself formally from all government activity throughout Hillary's tenure, if she is elected. That is not cruel, she chose their separation by running, and I believe there is a valid court argument that could be made reference the potential for purposely attempting to violate the 22d Amendment. Bill Clinton is not just another First Lady(man)--he has no business in the White House-- his preclusion is specific and a dictate of the "People" by vote.

You know...
Just like every other Liberal idea, this is just the extreme socialism that they inject into otherwise noble ideas.

The environmental movement was a good thing. It helped people become aware that we were severly damaging our planet with our pollutions. It's when the Liberals let their extremists take over a project does it get way out of hand. Patrick Moore, co-founder of Green peace, was astonished when the anti-capitalist crowd took over the organization and tried to enforce environmental servitude on the government.

But just like the environmental movements, Liberals took great and noble ideas and twisted them to force us all into a socialist state. Brown v. The Board of Education was a great ruling, unfortunately over the years Liberals began requiring racial quotas and ruined the whole point to the original Brown v. The Board of Education ruling, making decisions without any regards to a persons race.
Libs have done the same thing with Welfare, with Title IX laws, healthcare and all the other various major ideals that they've had over the years.

All of Liberal ideas start out as well-intentioned, but eventually they turn into a tool to force the country into Socialism.

Planned Parenthood Wins CO2 savings awar
Since Roe v Wade Planned Parenthood killed 40 million babies via abortion. Since all humans exhale tons of CO2 they are the winners.

May this scum organization cease.

On the other hand...
nuclear winter would solve the global warming problem, for a while anyway.

Do we have our priorities out of order?
Do we even know what they are?

Lest you forget
Nancy P knows that we can always accept her failures and her lies as long as she promises the majority will get something at the expense of the minority...
but, she can't win when the enemies start nuking our cities. But, then neither can anyone else!

So, maybe we need to focus on the secular humanists who think they can do away with Christianity and find peace with the Muslims! The Muslims march to a different drum beat, and their majority has no way to control their zealous minority. Either we provide that control or we die. Then global whatever is not our problem.

Do we have our priorities out of order?

Who is running our government?
I'm so tired of everyone but the people running things. We have no say in so much that goes on. The wacko environmentlists run so much of the govt. They have stopped all drilling, have put so many restrictiions in the way of oil companies, that they have given up on new refineries. No Nuclear power plants. No windmills that would ruin the view for Ted Kennedy. We could be totally energy indepentent were it not for these tree huggers.

Now they have started on "global warming" despite all the evidence that points to the fact that it is a normal thing. It has happened for hundreds of years. A Power much higher that we mortals, has designed it to be so.

But Ms P and other congressmen, and Senators have decided that Al Gore is God, and knows it all!!!

Nancy is a horrible marxist like Chavez
She'll have the radio and television stations shutdown or broadcasting commie programs before you know it if we don't get her out of there. She can take her pal Diane with her.

She presides over thee most do nothing congress ever and is incapable of doing the business that would keep America free and safe.

Believe the Politicians?
If our politicians really believed this AGW crap they keep trying to use to tell us we must lower our life styles then why do they fail to set examples for us by changing their extravagant living standards?
Politicians rank among the worst polluters on Earth.

Now if they don't really believe it and are using it as a lie to justify taxes and control people's lives then they are not worthy to be our leaders and should be removed from office.

It's water vapor, not CO2
Everybody should read this piece. It clears things up nicely.

http://www.wecnmagazine.com/2007issues/may/may07.html

DrColes
You are right on with your post, except for one thing.
The fact that the sun causes most climate changes is not a "new NASA finding".
That information has been agreed upon by astronomers and climatologists for decades.

Driessen
His argument against wind power sounds like Teddy Chappaquiddick Kennedy. Kennedy said he will not allow the wind turbines in his area because they block his nice view.
Screw the nice view, everybody.

What will Congress do?
First the Democratically Congress will use carbon offsets following the leadership of Al Gore and the Hollywood Left. The difference is they will use our tax dollars.

Second, any mandates to save energy or reduce carbon dioxide emission will fall on the backs of that class Democrats always claim they want to help the Middle Class. Congress will continue on doing business as usual. Travelling to and from their jobs in the style to which they have grown accustom to. Pelosi jets back and for with her entire troop of players across the country on every holiday and many weekends.

Third, control energy and one controls our economy. Almost everything you use or do requires energy. Look around you, everything required energy to make, to transport, etc, etc. Now reduce everything around you and all that you do by 25% per year or increase the cost of everything around you by 25% per year. That is the whole point of the so call global warming crisis.

Fourth, in the past week, generally ignored by the mainstream media, some out of China speculated that given the choice between economic growth and the possibility of global climate change, the Chinese would chose economic growth. They will adapt to climate change. So what our Democratic Congressional leaders want to do is put the world's economies on equal footing. Why? Well it is only fair. Americans have been rich and powerful much too long.

Finally, there are now many big named climatologist and weather experts that are calling the question relative to the so called consensus on global warming. Do you think that the national media or better yet Democratic Congressional leaders will either listen to or tell us about these experts concerns?

Pay attention to this so called crisis because now only is it going to cost you a large percentage of your income and lifestyle, buy not truly solving our energy supply problem we are put at extreme strategic risk. You best understand where our oil and all our energy comes from and who controls it. The world gets oil from Saudi Arab we buy elsewhere, Nigeria, Venezuela, etc.

China...
is now the largest CO2 emitter, as of this month. If China continues on its current course, its CO2 emissions will double over the next decade. If we reduced our CO2 emissions to zero over the next decade, CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere would continue to increase anyway.

India is also increasing its CO2 emissions rapidly. If it continues on its current path over the next decade, even if the EU reduced its CO2 emissions to zero over the decade, CO2 emissions would still continue to increase.

If AGW is an issue, it is a global issue; and, it is amenable only to a global solution. None of the "solutions" on the table today are truly global in scope; therefore, all are doomed to failure.

Einstein reputedly defined insanity as: "...continuing to do the same things and expecting different results." Our current approaches to AGW are "insane" by this definition. Any global reduction strategy which excludes China and India is neither "global" nor a strategy; it is a stragedy!

CO2 and Climate Change IS a FRAUD
Please do your homework before this political propaganda costs you your economies.

I am not arguing that a change in the climate might be occurring. The climate on earth changes all the time and that global change is caused by the Sun (a new NASA finding). All life on the planet is carbon based, CO2 is part of our food chain, and it is not a pollutant. The biggest “green house gas” is water vapor. If climate change is caused by human activity then we would need to start eliminating life on the planet, yes this is absurd, so is the assertion that humans are causing climate change. It just is NOT the truth.

Shout to the rafters
Why isn't the true information about the potentially devastating antics of the Democratic Party's "fringe" crowd now in control on Capitol Hill being exposed and protested to the degree that this latest Kennedy "comprehensive giveaway" (and make no mistake, this, as all previous, including the beginning of the end of sane immigration policy in 1965, have been out of the USA destrucive brain of Teddy); if I was qualified, I'd diagnose Teddy with a subconsciencous "USA hate disorder" over the deaths of his brothers resulting in a legislative vendetta ever since the 1960s) has been?
The US public may have wanted change on "the Hill" in 2006, and voted accordingly dismissing the horrible results of the alternative, but they need to come back to sanity in 2008 and throw out these looney Liberal lackies; the GOP was taught its lesson in 2006.

Comment
Re: Michigan auto makers
Have you seen the Toyota commercial? They talk about plants in West Virginia, Kentucky, and California, but not one mention of Michigan. Hmmm.

Nancy
If Nancy says its ethical, it is ethical.

Frey writes: , 30, 2007 1:36 AM
OK, cutting carbon emissions does cost, but if it's really as bad as all that, can someone please explain the following to me?

....As of 2007, four industrialized countries have cut carbon emissions to below 1990 levels. They are Sweden, the UK, France, and Germany. The interesting part is, since 1998, these countries have all had higher overall GDP growth rates than the United States.

DESKJOCKEY RESPONDS

There are a number of issues that may explain your paradox. I took a look at Sweden, because I go there each year and it is first on your list. First of all increase of GDP is somewhat meaningless. If a country takes in a huge number of immigrants its GDP will rise but its standard of living will drop. So the better indicator is what is the per capita GDP. For the period I have available the per capita GDP form ’98-05 for the US is up 11.7% and Sweden 10.8%.

Now another thing that impacts these things is social policy. For example our social policy has been one of run away giver-ment spending unlike anything since FDR & Johnson that has crippled our economy compared to most in the world and driven much production off shore. Conversely Sweden has gone the other direction having replaced a run away socialist giver-ment with a somewhat more rational giver-ment and in the late ‘90s started changing its welfare state to reduce benefits. For example health care now cost more to the individual and retirement benefits actually go down when life expectancy goes up.

This is somewhat the same thing that happened in Ireland when they went more conservative, cut taxes and became a huge growth machine.

Out biggest problem is that we have the highest corporate tax rates in the Western world and this among other impediments to business is taking a toll. When China’s growth slows to 4-5% range they are in a depression, when we reach to 3.5% we think we are in an economic boom.

Another issue is that these economies get a lower output per barrel of oil than the US. So we have another tradeoff issue of carbon vs goods produced. The best way to solve the carbon issue is to restrict oil to all other nations in favor of the US who can produce more goods/barrel. The UN could also increase their population control programs by maybe killing an extra 100M per year in the lowest productivity countries to get better energy usage.

Anyway, why are we worried about greenhouse gases anyway? Haven’t the recent studies shown that this is a result of warming not a cause. They say the most effective thing we can do to help the environment is kill all the cows as their farts do more harm than everything man is doing.

However the instant way to end global warming is to have all the nations surrender to the UN and cease national taxation in favor of global taxation. Global warming will end the following day as the UN will have no need to promote the scam having accomplished the real goal and now certainly not wanting to waste good money they got their hands on.

Wrong! Not long enough!

With age comes excerience, and with experience comes wisdom... and these days we need as much wisdom as we can muster.

If you'd like a preview of where this legislative masturbation is taking us, come to Michigan. Our unemployment rare is almost double the national average, the state govt is facing close to a $1Bil deficit and our recently reelected governor (a Dem of course) is responding by trying to raise every tax and fee on the books. The swirling sound they hear from Northern Indiana and Ohio is our state being flushed down the crapper.

The hoax is about to be exposed!

Sensational statements by Dr Kevin Trenberth, IPCC supporter
June 23rd, 2007 by Warwick Hughes
http://www.warwickhughes.com/blog/?p=117

"Dr Trenberth says,

“In fact there are no predictions by IPCC at all. And there never have been. The IPCC instead proffers “what if” projections of future climate that correspond to certain emissions scenarios.”

"There are an awful lot of policy makers and others driven by the the content of the Al Gore movie and the general blizzard of scary predictions of the future pumped out by the media, that are sure acting as though they believe the IPCC makes predictions; and good, believable predictions too.

"For the full statement by Dr Trenberth and many comments, go to the Climate Science: Roger Pielke Sr. Research Group Weblog."

Blazing Saddles
One of the most appropriate political statements came from this movie, and this is just another instance which reminds me of it. In a cabinet meeting one of the attendees reads a letter asking the Governor(Mel Brooks) to send a new sheriff to the town of Rock Ridge because the previous one had been shot. In mock horror and disgust the Gov responds by saying "Gentelmen, we've got to protect our phoney baloney jobs!"
The economic analysis presented in the article tells us how much these legislative scams will cosr, but not where the extra money goes. It doesn't take much imagination to conclude that most of it will wind up in the coffers of Uncle Sam, no doubt in part to finance the soon to be greatly expanded govt subsidy program to assist anyone with less than a 7 figure income pay their heat bills which will be astronomical.

Turn off the A/C
"House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has proposed to make Congress “carbon neutral” in its electricity use. How this is possible without building separate transmission lines and condemning private property for rights-of-way, to get electricity from wind and solar farms to Capitol Hill, she doesn’t say."

I have a suggestion for Ms. Speaker. I've read that before the advent of air conditioning, Congress managed to get all its business accomplished by May so they could adjurn for the summer. Then air conditioning was introduced to the Capitol, and now Congress can't even get a budget bill done by September 30 (end of the fiscal year) and has to pass stop gap spending bills most years.

Air conditioning is a major source of electricity usage in the summer. Furthermore, the Capitol is a large building with high ceilings -- exactly the kind of energy non-efficient building that uses a disproportionate amount of electricity to keep it cool in the hot months. I propose that from now on, the Capitol (and the DC-area residences of its members) A/C be disconnected. This will result in a 2-fer for the taxpayer -- dramatically reduced energy consumption on the part of the government and a Congress with less time to meddle in our affairs.

When I see the A/C turned off in the Capitol for the summer, I will believe Ms. Pelosi is serious about reducing energy comsumption. Until then, I'll know Congress is just blowing so much hot air.

But maybe I have lived too long.
.

Excuse me,but I think I have...
...lived too long.In watching politicians for over 50 years now,I have come to the conclusion that there are only two things politicians care about: 1. getting elected.

2. getting re-elected.

What happens in the long term future is of no interest to them, except as it directly affects their re-election.The trick for the rest of us is to enlist allies to stop them with fear for their re-election.For example, the reason every Senator, present and voting, went on record in 1998 making it the sense of the Senate that the Kyoto treaty was dead on arrival was that the Republicans were out to protect large industries, and the Democrats were out to protect unionized labor (blue collar workers).Almost all blue collar workers are unionized. The first casualties of this law will be unionized big businesses. The lobbiests got to their respective parties and laid down the law:If this treaty passes,no more money for re-election!

Opponents of this nonsense, like me,have got to get to their politicians and point this out to them. The Republican party should point out to the country who will be hurt the most,by massive un-employment.That will get many,if not all,Democrat politicians on the Republican side on this issue. If you are waiting for the politicians to do the right thing for the country, you will have a very long wait.Assume all politicians will act in their own interests first, and not the country's,and you won't be disappointed.

Holy cow!
Thanks for this information. I am emailing this one to friends, and maybe even a few enemies. This is horrible.

Pregunta (question)
OK, cutting carbon emissions does cost, but if it's really as bad as all that, can someone please explain the following to me?

As of 2007, four industrialized countries have cut carbon emissions to below 1990 levels. They are Sweden, the UK, France, and Germany. The interesting part is, since 1998, these countries have all had higher overall GDP growth rates than the United States. Each country's GDP grew by at least 50% in those nine years, while that of the U.S. grew by a little over 40% in the same period. My numbers come from the International Monetary Fund (2006) and the economic historian Angus Madison (1998) and were adjusted for inflation. So if carbon-cutting measures are so costly, what's the deal? Did the Europeans find Blackbeard's treasure, or what?

Don't believe me? Well, I didn't expect you to. Look up the numbers and check it out for yourself.

Germany: I know what you're going to say, and you're partly right, the post-reunification closings of East Germany's inefficient power plants did cut emissions pre-Kyoto. But, West Germany had about twice the carbon emissions of East Germany in 1990, so East German industry was pumping out about a third of Germany's total carbon. Currently, their emissions are at 17% below 1990 levels, which means that to get where they are now, they would have had to cut East German emissions in half, while keeping West German emissions at 1990 levels for the past 15 years.

England: They did close a lot of coal mines in the 80's and 90's (thank you, Margaret Thatcher), but at most, that made up for increases in other sectors. The closings started in 1985, but by 1990, carbon emissions were actually slightly higher, country-wide. So, they didn't get much of a pre-Kyoto benefit, certainly not enough to explain a 12% decrease from 1990.
