Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The White House and Congress are political entities, filled with political people. As we speak, people from the House Speaker's office are coordinating their message with people from the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and the DNC – on the taxpayer's dime, using their government e-mail accounts and offices.

That is perfectly ethical and proper. And I don't see anyone investigating it, not should they.

The bigger issue is that the U.S. Congress is now in the business of investigating political opposition to itself. I won't throw around the word "Stalinist" here, but this most definitely doesn't sound like America.

With troops fighting overseas, the focus on investigations rather than leadership seems not a little bit misplaced. Dead issues aren't exempt from the dragnet, from Valerie Plame to the 2006 elections, both of which ended in victories for the Democrats if I recall correctly.

Add to this an entirely new dimension of using Congress to investigate the political opposition and dig up Republican strategy memos and e-mails. Make no mistake: none of this is being done simply to give the White House a headache, but to gain access to the playbook and targeting plans (such as they are right now) that will be used to remove Democrats from power.

As a substantive matter, what the White House did is a yawner. I'm shocked (shocked!) that there is politics going on this establishment.

The ultimate issue is that opposing the Democrat Congress is now enough to get you brought in for questioning. You'd better watch out before putting that Republican yard sign in your lawn, lest you be dragged before Henry Waxman's committee.

Bush and Government
Much of the trouble seems to stem from the apparent belief of the Bush administration that it is justified in maintaining secrecy and behaving extralegally because government is none of the people's business and, anyway, their cause is just. And many of its supporters identify with that property, like children cheering Rambo in a movie or the cat in a Tom & Jerry cartoon.

I was reading today 4-8 an interesting article on washingtonpost.com on Gonzales' aide young Monica Goodling who resigned last week. It seems that she has her undergraduate degree from an evangelist college and her law degree from Pat Robertson's Liberty University and that she has served as a conduit for bringing a great many more more evangelistic young people into the Department of Justice---although many other law schools exist and Liberty is only 29 years old, 150 graduates of Regent have been brought into federal service by Ms Goodling in the few years of her tenure---the article says that she forced senior people out of the DOJ so she could replace them with her godly young comrades.

Liberty was founded with the stated intention of preparing evangelistic Christians to take over government offices in order to assert Christian authority. The motto of the school is "Your Resume is God's instrument" using "Christian leadership to change the world". And the thrust of today's article, by Dahlia Lithwick, is that Ms Goodling conflated God's work with Bush's. As I wrote in my first paragraph, the Bush administration believes so strongly in its cause that its willing to subvert democracy and the law in order to operationalize that cause. So did Hitler.
