Senate Republicans to Take the New Media Seriously

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Once it became clear during the 2006 campaign that the Republicans would probably lose both Houses of Congress, some conservatives suggested that a bloodletting might not be such a bad thing. It takes an occasional thumping to renew the mind and refresh the spirit, they argued. The jury is still out on that sentiment but in at least one respect Capitol Hill Republicans appear willing to break with their old pattern and try something new. Republicans in the Senate have begun to take the New Media seriously.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) announced the hire this week of Jon Henke to manage New Media relations for the Senate Republican caucus. Henke is highly respected blogger at QandO.net and served as the Netroots Coordinator for Sen. George Allen’s unsuccessful re-election campaign last year. Later in the week Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) announced the hire of Tim Chapman, formerly of the Heritage Foundation and Townhall.com, as his new Senior Communication Advisor. Part of Chapman’s responsibilities will be to manage New Media relations for DeMint’s Senate Republican Steering Committee.

Both hires indicate a new commitment on the part of top Republicans to engage the grassroots and improve their message dissemination capabilities.

Despite his recent resume, Henke should not be mistaken for a political hack. He has a profound understanding of the dynamics of modern communication: its velocity, its asperity, its strengths and its limitations. Nevertheless, I sat on a blogger panel recently with Henke and was impressed with his practical political analyses.

His political worldview is libertarian. But don’t count Henke among those utopian dreamers bent on recalibrating the social contract. “I call it Neolibertarianism, which is a practical, political approach to preserving liberties,” he says.

“I'm very excited about this position for a variety of reasons; because of the opportunity it gives me, because of the importance of an effective opposition, and because of the positive signal it sends that Republicans are taking New Media engagement seriously,” Henke wrote on his blog.

Henke got started in his new job right away by inviting conservative bloggers to join in a conference call with Sen. McConnell to discuss “policy, our game plan, and how we’re approaching our role in this Senate.”

Henke’s communications background is not limited to blogging, which he started doing in 2003. He worked in talk radio for eleven years, as well. His multimedia experience will serve him well in the democratized New Media environment. Blogs are only one part of the New Media revolution. Podcasts and online videos have become immeasurably cheaper and simpler to produce over the past two years. The whole New Media is a powerful way for politicians to connect with news consumers, activists and voters without having to rely as heavily on the Mainstream Media (MSM).

Many right-of-center pundits argue however that the GOP’s problems aren’t that it is incapable of delivering a message but rather that it no longer has a cohesive conservative message to deliver. Enter Sen. Jim DeMint. DeMint is the new chairman of the Senate Republican Steering Committee, a body of conservatives who see their job as keeping the caucus from becoming too squishy on core issues. DeMint’s hiring of Chapman is a clear indication that he intends to become the voice of the conservative movement on Capitol Hill.

Chapman says his boss is now one of the premier conservative leaders in the country. “He’s in a position now to aggressively advance the conservative agenda,” he says. DeMint is counting on Chapman to help make the New Media an even more powerful tool in the promotion of that agenda. He could not have picked a more capable new staffer.

Chapman is universally well-respected in the right-of-center blogosphere. While at the Heritage Foundation, where he served as Director of the Center for Media and Public Policy, Chapman co-hosted with Robert Bluey of Human Events a Bloggers Briefing over lunch every Tuesday. This experience earned him a ready stable of New Media contacts through which he can promote DeMint’s disciplined conservative message.

Chapman believes the U.S. Senate is the only venue for conservatives to take a stand in the 110th Congress. “Conservatives in the House will be able to make some noise but conservatives in the Senate will actually be able to fight for good legislation,” he says.

Like Henke, Chapman sees the New Media as a weapon for conservatives on Capitol Hill to circumvent the MSM when necessary. By communicating with bloggers—many of who consider themselves “citizen journalists”—Chapman believes he’ll be able to drive stories the MSM normally ignores and even correct misapprehensions the MSM uncritically amplify with vexing regularity.

Both Henke and Chapman command respect from the left side of the blogosphere. Speaking on background, several left-of-center bloggers spoke highly of them and credited McConnell and DeMint for ramping up their New Media capabilities. Both are likely to curtail their own blogging as they concentrate on serving their respective new bosses.

The People
But are they going to listen to the people who voted them into their positions? They haven't for a long time.

Nothing gets a pols attention
like incumbents who don't get elected. The R's will do more to re-examine their actions than the D's, which is all to the good. The only hope conservatives have for 08 is for R's to go back to right wing principles, and for D's to give in to their left fringe. So far, dang it, the D's seem to know this and have avoided going far left. Conservatives need a big tax hike, a draft (no chance in reality) and some visible and expensive benefits for illegal aliens.

CC
They better listen to the people who voted them OUT of their positions.

They keep talking about their "message". But the Republicans were voted out of office because of their inaction on the "message". The "New Media" is how we are keeping tabs on what the scoundrels are doing.

Lets Pretend
that people still believe what any politician says to any media outlet.

The best way to get the message out is first of all to have a message, and second to have something behind your airy persiflage that anybody can believe -- that is, have a realistic chance of actually doing whatever it is you're espousing.

Finally, stop focusing obsessively on getting and keeping personal power. That is all that politics is about in the long run, and most people at the "grass roots" know that. "The beggars change horses but the lash goes on."

And be prepared for the fact that your base as well as everyone else will be both flabbergasted and horrified when you actually do what you said you'd do. That puts them on their back foot and gives you a chance to actually accomplish something before they catch up.

It's no use talking to us if you don't have anything to say. And believe us, we can tell the difference between blabberjabber, persiflage and a plan. Like Mary Kay Place in "The Big Chill", it takes us about 15 seconds to figure out whether there's a chance in the world. That's how long you've got. Make it count.

expensive programs for illegals
Gently99:

We just got that new expensive program. Illegals will now get SS after 18 months of employment. The only problem is that a Republican is giving it to them.

"Finally, stop focusing obsessively on getting and keeping personal power."

Great post but that comment says it all. It encapsulates the biggest problem politicians of any party and at all levels have. When that takes precedence over actually serving the constituency and the nation, all of us are screwed.

No media relations can cover that up.

They heard us!
After all they don't live in a complete bubble although sometimes we think so. No. The absolute arrogance of our elected representatives as well as tremendous preoccupation with the power struggle brought to the republican majority by the democrat minority (who refused to except their loss of power) caused them to disregard the voices from the people. I expect a change by the party ,an understanding that listening to the people will lead to reelection. I would say "or else" but what can I do except to keep writing to them. I refused to reup for my party dues recently because of my anger.

How long will we have a New Media?
They are already trying to selectively silence Free Speach.

Me too.
I no longer contribute to the RNC because I fear the money may be used to help something like Snowe or McCain or some other RINO.
I make any contributions directly to the Candidate I choose!

My two cents...
I think they need all the help they can get. When you have such a blantant liberal bias it is almost impossible to get any good news out. Something will have to change. I heard the News
guy at ABC say the same thing. Balanced reporting
has become a rareity. I hope ABC news will stick to its promise to change and from what I have seen since I heard him talk, it has. Thanks to Fox at least we have two TV channels to get accurate accounts of what is going on.

wolfpat
You are so right. Instead of continuously harping that THEY have a message for the people, they should LISTEN to the message FROM the people. They just might still be sipping Potomac waters had they listened prior to 11/7.

Patrick Hynes wrote,

Gee, Patrick, no kidding! It took losing the House and the Senate to the Socialists-Dems to figure that out?

Ronald Reagan won by stating a clear and concise conservative message and sticking to it. The current crop of Republicans think they can win by sucking up to Ted Kennedy and Muslims and illegal aliens.

Wolfpat
Of course you're right - that makes more sense, because of the consequences. OUT you go - hopefully it meant something.

We have a really disappointing lineup for 08 - plus they've exhumed the likes of Trent Lott. Do we know anything about Brownback who'se just thrown his hat in?

As for the media - yes, thank goodness for Fox News, and here's keeping our fingers crossed about ABC.

The two liberal women on Fox this week (Jane Hall and Andrea Mitchell) who both emphatically denied that NBC is biased, have their heads in the sand. Being biased also includes OMITTING news stores. CNN, NBC, CBS, PBS, local affiliates and print media are so biased I get angry when I check in on them to see if they're reporting a certain story. Of course they're not.

Where is the story about Barney Frank saying the president used Katrina as ethnic cleansing? If this had been a republican saying that about a democratic president, he would have been hounded 24/7 until he was run out of office. Why don't we make a huge fuss? I've contacted all of the above, plus the local TV affiliates about it.

Forget ABC
This morning I watched (contrary to usual practice) news from that channel. In just a few minutes they delivered news about the warm weather currently prevailing, showed giant computors that predict weather. Commented on how the warmth, and even the snow in Colorado, are proof of global warming as predicted by these giant computors. Then some announcer told us that 99.6% of "reputable" scientists back the principal of human caused global arming. DONE...no other side to the issue of global warming. Forget ABC.

Less effective
There is a reason conservative blogging is leff effective than liberal blogging. Conservatives have a MSM outlet, Fox, that tells anyone with a TV what the latest Republican talking points are.

Liberals have nothing comparable. Conservatives are wrong to say the rest of the MSM is liberal. In fact, the liberal blogs (dailykos, talkingpointsmemo, juancole, ..) consistently have information the MSM left out in the interest of "balance".

The Republicans.
I no longer consider myself a Republican. I am a conservative. The Republicans in Congress are cowards and liars that have no convictions. I would probably hate them if they were worthy of that.

They pretended to be conservative until they could get elected. Once they got in power, they decided that the best way to stay in power was the method perfected by the Democrats; throw pork barrel spending at the voters with both hands and forget fiscal restraint. Additionally, they have given in on all core conservative principles and backed down whenever challenged. They are disgraceful and pathetic.

I would be very happy about their loss of power if it weren't for the fact that the Democrats are the ones that have it now.

Have you ever explored this link? http://www.mrc.org/archive/realitycheck/welcome.asp

If you do you will understand why we laugh at you when you deny MSM Liberal bias.
Pay particular attention to the item for April 13th.

I go to most of the Liberal Blogs just out of curiosity.
Gestell has the best Lib Blog in my unbiosed opinion.

liberalgoodman
Are the left wing blogs covering:

Sandy Berger documents-down-the-pants story?

Barney Frank's accusation that the president used Katrina as ethnic cleansing?

William Jefferson's request for cash on congressional letterhead, with congressional stamps, etc.?

Please answer, with links. As Bill O'Reilly says, if you're going to make accusations, you need the evidence to back them up. I'm not being confrontational, just trying to get to the facts. Thank you.

Its just an indication...
...that Senator McConnell and others are smart enough to figure out that it actually takes votes to win. Something the President, Rove, Mehlman and others in the RNC forgot. If McConnell and crew decide to embrace the right-of-center blogesphere they're in for an exciting ride. The way I see it these blogs are trending towards the view that the President "is" the opposition. If those in the Senate and House climb on board with that view, it won't be easy for them. These politicians like McConnell need all the encouragement we can give the. It would be a great thing if folks like him could block all the bad legislation that the President and Dem's throw at them over the next 2 years. We will see the GOP "cream" rise to the top over the next 2 years. And they'll need our support as the MSM will turn from Bush onto them. DD

It's interesting that you should mention this one:

http://www.mrc.org/realitycheck/2006/fax20060413.asp

It is widely understood that Bush lied about WMD. It't not relevant what he personally believed. He clearly forced people to tell him there were WMDs. In this article, someone on a morning talk show (which nobody in their right mind would watch for news) may have misquoted a newspaper. We on the left thing the MSM has let Bush off very easy on the WMD issue. No sympathy from me on this one.

You asked whether liberal blogs cover unsavory behavior from Democratic legislators. Here are two such reports.

http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/002292.php

http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/002279.php

I haven't read liberal blogs either way on the Barney Frank ethnic clensing quote (which I saw on michellemalkin along with some hyperventilating on her part). I think Frank is correct: Bush is trying to make New Orleans a red city by keeping blacks from moving back. That would be ethnic clensing of New Orleans, albeit without the murder that goes with ethnic clensing in Iraq.

Liberalgoodman
sounds like a looney to me! "Ethnic cleasing"? Didn't the goofy reelected mayor of New Orleans call his city a "chocolate city"? The poster to whom I am responding is proof positive that libs and radicals are RACISTS.

liberalgoodman
I understand your state of shock & confusion to learn MSM has been leading you around on a leash.
BTW FOX is not broadcast on public airways and is not part of MSM. People pay to watch FOX news because they want the news, nothing omitted or replaced with fabricated fiction.

Next you will become angery.
You will resent being duped by MSM.
We will all be happy to see you enlightened.

Fox news
Fox news on the radio reports the same MSM trash spewed on the other news stations, but the TV does carry more conservatives.

I too have not paid my RNC dues, and agree that Republicans RINOs are the problem.

George Will wrote a column last week or so talking about Ford Motor Company's loss of revenue without mentioning the boycott by conservatives because of Ford's support of the homosexual agenda. Duhh.

Ronald Reagan Conservatives must find their voice and if this New Media thing is it, great. We'll see. Mr. Bush has a wonderful opportunity to do the right thing in the 2 years he has left, and Republicans would be rewarded if he does so.

New Media
I have not paid my Republican dues either, just sent to my candidate. I will continue to do that unless a 3rd party comes along with a good candidate that has the conservative ideas. They should start listening to what the public wants not what they want, they have all taken an oath to uphold the the Laws of the Constitution, defend this country and its people, but I would say most all of them have lied and committed perjury so according to law they should be tried in a court of law for their crimes, including the President, various Senators and Congressmen and some of the Supreme Court Justices who have tried to rewrite the Constitution. It is not just a piece of paper it is a contract of laws that our government should follow and they not done. They should all be required to read the Constitution/Bill of Rights/Declaration of Independence at least once a year (out loud on the floor of the Senate/Congress and the President at his State of the Union) so the people know what they are supposed to do to protect this country and its sovereinty.
