Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Despite his boldness, Barack Obama seems as fated to fail as were Woodrow Wilson and Jimmy Carter. And for the same reason: a belief in his own righteousness and moral superiority, and a belief that his ideals and his persona count mightily in the modern world.

*** Special Offer ***

Wilson declaimed about America's fight to "make the world safe for democracy" when in harness with the British, French, Russian, Japanese and Italian empires, all slavering to feast on the carcasses of the Hohenzollern, Habsburg and Ottoman empires.

By 1920, Wilson was a tragic failure, mocked by ex-allies and reviled by former enemies for having dishonored his own 14 Points.

Jimmy Carter declared in 1977 that "we have gotten over our inordinate fear of communism that caused us to embrace any dictator who shared in that fear." So, we undermined Nicaragua's Anastasio Somoza and the Shah, and got the Sandinistas and the Ayatollah Khomeini.

As for Barack, he behaves on the world stage like some Ivy League kid ashamed of the people he came from, letting one and all on campus know that he is nothing like his benighted family with its sordid history.

In Cairo, he confessed that America had a hand in dumping over the regime in Iran in 1953. He did not mention that the United States forced the retreat of Joseph Stalin's army from Iran in 1946.

For the 100th time, he declared, "I have unequivocally prohibited the use of torture by the United States, and I have ordered the prison at Guantanamo Bay closed by early next year."

Is Obama unaware that Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia run prisons that make Guantanamo look like The Breakers at Palm Beach?

How many Guantanamo inmates plead to be sent home to Muslim countries?

In Trinidad, Obama sat for 55 minutes enduring Daniel Ortega's diatribe against the United States for mistreatment of Castro's Cuba and for the Bay of Pigs. Obama protested that he could not be held responsible for something that happened the year he was born.

Why could not he say to Ortega: "We also intervened in the Dominican Republic in 1965 to block a communist takeover, and in Grenada in 1983. The only problem with the Bay of Pigs is that we should have done it right and removed the odious Cuban dictatorship, and put Fidel, Raul and Che up against that same wall where so many patriots perished and spared the Cuban people 50 years of tyranny and the prostitution of their island into a base camp for the greatest despotism of the 20th century."

What is the matter with Obama that he cannot defend our Cold War conduct and Cold War presidents like Ike and JFK?

Answer: Obama cannot, because at heart he buys into the anti-American narrative that ours is a deplorable history -- of genocide against the Indians, of slavery and segregation, of robbing Mexicans of their land and of disrespecting our Latin neighbors.

Obama is determined to make the requisite apologies to show the world he does not condone the sins our fathers committed.

Thus, as Nile Gardiner of the Heritage Foundation has cataloged, Obama has apologized to Europe for our having "shown arrogance and been dismissive, even derisive." He apologized to Latin America for our having been "disengaged and at times ... sought to dictate."

He told the Turks that we are "working through our own darker periods in our history. ... Our nation still struggles with the legacy of slavery and segregation, the past treatment of Native Americans."

Obama, however, did not ask the Turks to confess to their own "darker periods," which might have taken some time.

Obama is the anti-Reagan. Where Reagan ever spoke of the greatness and glory of America, her history and heroes, her capacity to make the world all over again, Obama is like a dismal parson, forever reminding us -- and everyone within earshot -- of our own and our fathers' sins.

Obama is not only demoralizing Middle America, he is driving away the God-and-country patriots who are sick of hearing this rot from professors and journalists, and prefer not to hear it from their president. He is ceding moral high ground to regimes and nations that do not deserve it.

If Obama believes he can build himself up by tearing America down, he is mistaken. Cynical foreigners will view it with snickering contempt, patriotic Americans with disgust. What kind of leader is it who talks down his own country on foreign soil?

America's performance in the Cold War was hardly flawless. But does anyone deny that we were on the right side, that the Soviet Empire and Mao's China and communist Vietnam and Castro's Cuba were on the side of tyranny -- and that the neutrals were by and large irrelevant or worse in that great cause?

A nation is an extended family. While families fight and quarrel, often bitterly, you do not take the family quarrel outside the family.

You don't hang the family's dirty linen on the communal clothesline.

Obama, however -- like some Hollywood actress seeking sympathy and public approbation with her tell-all biography detailing how she was abused by her father -- trolls for popularity with America's adversaries by reciting for the benefit of the world all the sins his country has allegedly committed.

When did this become the duty of the president of the United States?

Rhetorical question deserving an answer
Pat asks: “But does anyone deny that we were on the right side, that the Soviet Empire and Mao's China and communist Vietnam and Castro's Cuba were on the side of tyranny?”

Truth is, in the depths of his rotten, contemptible soul, Barack Obama would deny it. I have no doubt that he thinks the world would be a better place were it dominated by the Soviet Union, et. al.

True neoCON cannot even spell !
which is truly malodorous, as well as pretentiously supercilious... reading and studying might help that inadequacy also, but again, one would need to read beyond the neoCON/Zionist talking points-- which would indubitably be asking too much in his case... ignorance is such wistful bliss for some

Bore acle
You are truly full of yourself ... and the filling is maloderous ... if you catch my drift.

As for your complete lie about the Iraqis welcoming us ... even the Bush hating media showed EXACTLY that when they were liberated; but am I to believe my lying eyes or "you"! And do they ask us to leave, even now? HELL NO, you complete IDIOT! Learn to lie more convincingly!

reply to; true neoCON
The more you bray, the more obvious it becomes that you are overmatched... you simply bleat the usual neoCON inane platitudes, and not even very artfully.

The neoCON men like Paul Wolfowitz and Richard Perle have a field day snookering your vacuous ilk... like shooting fish in a barrel.

I am wasting my time... as I suggested before, beware the simpleton who imagines that all around him are wrong because he alone can see the light-- even though his perception flies in the face of logic and probative facts.

Paleocons like Buchanan and I made predictions back in 2003 which have already proven to be correct--> we took out the wrong bad guys; we have NOT been greeted as liberators; there is LESS oil and it costs MORE; democracies there are electing poeple who despise us-- because we grovel to Israel. When we leave Iraq, it will be a quagmire. It remains a cesspool where we should not have gone (but the Zionists wanted US there).

Oracle Not!
"I did not vote for the ObaMessiah-- but could not vote for NAU Amnesty John the neoCON either! He was a clone of the last clown."

Are you paying ANY attention ... about the only things McCain and Bush agreed on were the amnesty and a strong military! So you voted for neither? That means YOU are to blame for the catastrophe that is Obama! McCain, with all his shortcomings is still a million times better for the country than Obama ... that makes you an IDIOT!

"As for history vindicating Dubya having been duped, I would not hold my breath on that one!" Another assertion of something I never said ... I said Bush could figure it out on his own ... the so-called "neocons" just happened to agree with Bush ... maybe THEY were duped by Bush instead of the other way around? Bush always seemed to outmaneuver the liberals and other fools [see yourself here?].

"it came out that even Dubya said to Wolfy and Perle back in 2003-- Is THIS all you have?! (to show any REAL reason to take out Saddam)"

You HAVE to be a complete idiot to think that WMDs were the ONLY reason to take out Saddam ... that was one of at least a dozen, any one of which was sufficient. Also, even Saddam thought he had WMDs ... why should we not believe him ... just like the little weasel in Iran?

" ... amid a sea of lies and exaggerations about WMD's, etc."

There IS a sea of lies ... all coming from YOU and your Buchananite moron cronies!

reply to: True neoCON
There is none so blind as he who will not see.

It is said that those in asylums see only crazies around them--> "80% of Americans are idiots and about 53% are insane fools" [coincidentally, the same number that voted for the Socialist, Obama]!"

I did not vote for the ObaMessiah-- but could not vote for NAU Amnesty John the neoCON either! He was a clone of the last clown.

As for history vindicating Dubya having been duped, I would not hold my breath on that one! Have you noticed how estranged cheney and dubya have become?

That is partly because the long-besotted one finally got an explanation from Daddy's guys Baker and Scowcroft about how, "he had run with dogs and got fleas." They detailed how the neoCON cabal had snowed him... it came out that even Dubya said to Wolfy and Perle back in 2003-- Is THIS all you have?! (to show any REAL reason to take out Saddam)

They had to reply with subterfuge/lies, because the REAL agenda was the PNAC agenda--> to knock out Iraq for Israel and claim it was in part retaliation for 9/11 amid a sea of lies and exaggerations about WMD's, etc.

Oracle Less Than Zero
Oh please, the inanely sophomoric "80% of Americans consider it to have been an expensive mistake"! 80% of Americans are idiots and about 53% are insane fools [coincidentally, the same number that voted for the Socialist, Obama]! No poll will ever prove the rightness or wrongness of any action ... for those who can't see it NOW, only history will show the Iraq war as clearly a benefit for everybody ... especially, including the Iraqis! Just like Truman's approval ratings grew with time, so will Bush's and your idiotically labeled "neocons".

By the way, with Obama's poll numbers heading for the toilet; does that now make him a terrible president? Just using your "logic" to show how stupid it is. I believe it was Einstein who sad that 1000 scientists who didn't believe in relativity meant nothing; but ONE with proof could invalidate it. We're not measuring "feelings" but some kind of objective truth ... a complete stranger to the left!

re:
Like there wasn't AMPLE reason to take out this piece of garbage! What about North Korea ... Bush didn't get around to them, but where were the "Zionist"'s interest for taking them out?

Just because there's some coincidental event [the "neocons" in Bush's administration doesn't make it a cause! Wake up!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Methinks thou doth protest WAY too much.

Speaking of waking up?! Early on after we took out Iraq, Wolfy, Perle and Feith were on every talk show bragging about the virtues of their neoCON stratagem... only AFTER the excuses given for it kept vanishing in reality did they slink away from the W.H. cussing Dubya for failing to execute THEIR plan properly.

If it has been such a swell endeavor, why do 80% of Americans consider it to have been an expensive mistake?!

The fact that Saddam was a bad guy is moot-- so is Hugo Chavez and the North Korean dictator-- but we have not overthrown them.
There are no Jews anywhere near North Korea, so the neoCONS use it only as a stalking horse.

Read and study more carefully and get past the Zionist propaganda-- I have provided some excellent, even scholarly, even Jewish sources.

Good Work, Pat!
When will the besotted public and Media types finally catch on! Obama is an empty suit who
can deliver a speech superbly and lies a LOT !
His America bashing on foreign soil really rankles THIS immigrant citizen. It's all about Obama - period - nothing more complicated than that!.

AKAGI
You're making an awful lot of SENSE today ... like Pat ... has the world gone MAD?

Oracle Zero Sense
I just can't get over it ... "Without the neoCON/Zionist influence, we would not have taken down Saddam ... "!

Wake up!

Oracle Zero
Yeah, Bush was a dupe, incapable of making up his own mind about the worth of Israel ... oh yeah, our only REAL ally and democracy in that hellish part of the world; not to mention a noble people living in a viper's nest of fanatical enemies. Nope, Bush, like myself, was "duped" by the so-called neo-cons!

Someone has been duped, and I am confident it's you!

Pat Buchanan
BRAVO! It's amazing what Pat can do when he's not dwelling on the imaginary sins of Bush ... or Israel!!!

Note too; when we ran the Soviets out of Iran, was that TOO interventionists for you, Pat? Doesn't sound like it now!

Still, this is one of Pat's all time best [and as one who's criticized some of his columns fiercely]!

the Israel Lobby & US Foreign Policy
http://search.barnesandnoble.com/The-Israel-Lobby-and-US-Fo reign-Policy/John-J-Mearsheimer/e/9780374177720/?pwb=1

Synopsis

What is the impact of the Israel lobby on U.S. foreign policy—and is it in America’s national interest?

Publishers Weekly Review:

Expanding on their notorious 2006 article in the London Review of Books, the authors increase the megatonnage of their explosive claims about the malign influence of the pro-Israel lobby on the U.S. government.

Mearsheimer and Walt, political scientists at the University of Chicago and Harvard, respectively, survey a wide coalition of pro-Israel groups and individuals, including American Jewish organizations and political donors, Christian fundamentalists, neo-con officials in the executive branch, media pundits who smear critics of Israel as anti-Semites and the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, which they characterize as having an "almost unchallenged hold on Congress."

This lobby, they contend, has pressured the U.S. government into Middle East policies that are strategically and morally unjustifiable: lavish financial subsidies for Israel despite its occupation of Palestinian territories; needless American confrontations with Israel's foes Syria and Iran; uncritical support of Israel's 2006 bombing of Lebanon, which "violated the laws of war"; and the Iraq war, which "almost certainly would not have occurred had [the Israel lobby] been absent."

The authors disavow conspiracy mongering, noting that the lobby's activities constitute legitimate, if misguided, interest-group politics, "as American as apple pie."

Considering the authors' academic credentials and the careful reasoning and meticulous documentation with which they support their claims, the book is bound to rekindle the controversy.

this much is certain...
Without the neoCON/Zionist influence, we would not have taken down Saddam. Simply consider who the drivers were in the Bush W.H.--> Wolfy ("the architect of the Bush Doctrine"), Perle, Libby, Bolton, Feith, Abrams, Wurmser.

The awful tragedy of 9/11 simply gave the militant neoCONS the excuse to execute the PNAC, which they had crafted and signed back in '96... and Dubya proved to be a willing dupe.

There are some specific details in this scholarly account:

"The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy" by John J. Mearsheimer, Stephen M. Walt

And before someone brays the hackneyed ad hominem calumny, "anti-Semitism!," one of the authors is Jewish.

Akagi,
Now I see the problem. It isn't that I don't know what you're talking about you don't know what I'm talking about.

And
ethnicity, race or creed has nothing to do with someone's honesty or criminality..The Magicmessiah has surrounded himself with a gaggle of thugs and crooks from all ethnic backgrounds..he's a50% white, 7 % black and 43% Arab and a fraud; Rahm is Jewish; Napolitano's heritage seems to be Italian. Teddy Kennedy is Irish..they are all thugs and crooks just to name a few infesting our government..it's the heart not the heritage. Soros is ethnically Jewish but he's a betrayer of the Jewish people.
Tiller called himself a Christian but his murder of 60,000 innocent babies belies his
so called Christianity..evil is evil period.

Lily..so what Obama has some college majors, ever hear of 'educated fools?" of which there are an overabundance in the progressive/liberal world.

Charles
let me understand this..you contend the 9-11 was a Jewish plot...interesting..and 19 of the
terrorists in those planes were????? Drum roll please...Saudi's you know subjects of the guy the magicmessiah paid homage to in England with his servants bow. Now it's my understanding that Saudi Arabia is a muslim country, not only that but the King is the caretaker of their most sacred sites. It is common knowledge that Jews are persona nongrata in muslim countries, especially S.A.
So, O mighty seer..'splain how Jews had anything to do with the murder of 3000 Americans..Jews among them?????? I don't recall any Jewish or Israeli with the nam Mohammed Atta.
Saddam had connections with Osama..Salman Pak ring any bells. And what was that nut case our troops killed who led the A Q in Iraq..not the one with the bump on his head the other one with a Z beginning his last name..seems he had sanctuary in Iraq and medical treatment.
I guess bigotry comes in all flavors these days.
George Soros is Jewish, he's despicable and a traitor to the Jewish people..if you said he paid for the attack then I might think you are on to something. But to make a blanket statement like you have is disgusting.

Lilly
You continue to define yourself by negatives. Your man won. Its time to switch roles. Let's have some joi de voire, some peans of praise. If you are too miserable to get up to that level of cheerfulness, at least voice some relief that all the vicious greedy mean-spirited hateful racist unpatriotic homophobic misanthropes have a new president of your choosing. How soon are you planning to own him? When do we hear what you like about him. Which of the changes he has made so far do you approve of? Any complaints? No, forget the complaints. Too negative. Or are you afraid to say something good because you fear it will make you look ludicrous very soon? I think Obama is falling on his face and taking many people with him. I can't lose. If i'm right, i get to say i told you so. If i'm wrong, my house, my stock portfolio, my cash, and my American citizenship regain their previous values.

To vonryan
Re your suggestion that Obama has never been a scholar of history: I just looked up his college program. Obama's undergraduate degree at Columbia was in political science with a specialty in international relations. Look up the curriculum in SIPA (School of Internatinal and Public Affairs). It would be impossible to study either field in depth without considerable survey of history. For example, any series of lectures would constantly be referencing the history of the subject being taught. If you were assigned to write a research paper having to do with our current diplomatic relations with Mexico, you couldn't possibly write such a paper without reviewing the literature on our history with Mexico, our wars with Mexico, how Mexico got to be Mexico etc. I wonder whether perhaps your criticism is a case of "He jests at scars, that never felt a wound".

To First
I realized with a sense of shock that any young adult under about 40 years of age has grown up since the election of Reagan and therefore thinks that all of this is normal---the constant drumbeat that government is bad and should be resisted, that taxation is theft, that government programs = Communism, that regulation is bad and deregulation the ideal, that business can do no wrong, that unions are evil, that the military could never be given enough, and that the conservative viewpoint on social issues (abortion, gays, teaching science) is the gold standard rather than mutterings from the fringe of society. Life was not always thus.

Charles
Saudi Arabia is pretty devoid of Jews, so is Malaysia, Indonesia and the like. China did have a fairly large Jewsih community which dates as far back as the Tang, but since 1949, pretty devoid and you can be pretty sure the ruling class will be areligious. Not too many Jews in Penghu either.

However, perhaps there is this grand Jewish plot which means they rule the entire planet even if they aren't inside the country...I mean, they control the international finance system, the banks, American movies which penetrate the entire globe are put out by the Jews....right? It's a conspiracy man...and they were behind 9/11 too.

Before some crazy person takes me seriously, no, I don't believe this.

Charles
US supported the French in Veitnam against the Viet Minh starting with Esienhower and once the French left it supported the RVN under Diem, JFK sent advisors and LBJ sent in the first combat troops. All were operating under the Truman Doctrine of containment and no one was going to let Indochina go without a fight any who did would have been tarred as soft on communism and "who lost Indochina?"

Charles et al
Depends what you like...economic freedom? Try Singapore (but you may not like their rather authoritarian control on everything else) or Hong Kong. Both are rather warm too. Me? I'd pick Penghu or maybe SE Taiwan.

Charles in PA Looking for a Place
Hey, Charles, check with Akaqi. He has some ideas on where to go when everything falls apart here.

Akaqi - Peace with/without honor
I am sorry that I have to agree. The Dishonor did not belong to our troops but to the idiots who safely manned the halls of Congrees when the bullets were flying. It is to their shame and our that things turned out they way they did, but frankily I'll stand on my ealier position. I would rather that we had stayed out of the Asian mess beyond holding our position in Japan. We might even have been able to come in and help pick up the pieces after the fighting. Certainly a more honorable position than forcing our military to turn tail and run for political reasons.

reply to: charles
No, Israel did not cause 9/11, BUT their Zionist minions certainly foisted the profligate Iraq War on us... and Iraq had had NOTHING to do with 9/11!

Secular Saddam and radical Islamist Osama were OPPONENTS... we did Osama a favor by taking out Saddam.

we must stop scamnesty
re:

Who think's Obama will win in 2012?
If he does I'll be looking for a new country. I was thinking about New Zealand lately. Any recommendations?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

New Zealamd is beautiful, but too much of a tax-burdened welfare state already-- like what the ObaMessaih seeks to make us.

Middle America is likely going to wake up to Obama in 4 years, BUT the Left is anxious to get ILLEGALS voting, because the Left KNOWS that ILLEGALS will vote 95% for big guvment.

Ergo, it is CRITICAL that we stop scmanesty again in Congress... it is being drafted once again. They will use stealth talk such as, "bringing people out of the shadows." Hey, enforce the damm laws and they will go home where they belong-- the same way they came!

It is an egregious false challenge to proffer that, "we cannot simply deport 12 million." And if we grant a path to citizenship for 12 million lawbreakers, it will mean 100 million new poor, mostly ignorant welfare seekers over the next 20 years per Heritage.

excellent column, Pat!
I had not thought to liken the ObaMessiah to the preachy and supercilious Wilson and Carter, but it fits like a glove!

And I agree with a couple of posts which speak to the issue of, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing."

The Obamessiah is the price Middle America is paying for the bitter taste left behind by Dubya-- "change" meant change from the plagues of Presidente Jorge--> growing guvment irresponsibly, AND profligate spending on a war of choice against the wrong Arabs-- Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11.

We will have spent $3 TRILLION all-in on Iraq, all because a handful of Zionists around Dubya pulling his strings (Wolfy, Perle, Libby, Bolton, Feith, Abrams, Wurmser) wanted to take it out for Israel.

Finally, Presidente Jorge helped foist his neoCON clone Amnesty John on us so we could have more distaste for an open border NAU agenda.

Akagi
No, I WOULDN'T take SFA1973's bet that Obama will issue an apology to Japan on the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima - or at any OTHER time for that matter - for the reason I mentioned earlier.

Because to do so, he'd be repudiating the Democrats' sainted FDR - and since the Congressional Democrats' leadership would surely not say anything against such an apology, they likewise would be in practice repudiating what was on 8/6/1945 a substantial Democratic majority in Congress.

Not that I don't think Obama WOULDN'T love to make such an apology to Japan: it's just that the historical facts makes such an action a political embarassment to Democrats. Had it been a REPUBLICAN president who A-bombed Hiroshima, I think Obama would make such an apology in a heartbeat. But on THIS one, the responsibility for Hiroshima is inseparable from the Democrats.

So that is why I'll give Obama credit for having enough brains to refrain from making an apology for THIS particular episode of past American behaviour - much as he may dearly want to.

Looking for a fight
After scanning and reading many of the postings on this site - some good, some bad - I detect that many of those who come online to post, especially those with a liberal slant seem to come aboard to start a fight of sorts.

That has always been one thing that both I and my husband have noted about candidates in all electoral races (governor, senator, representative or president) is that they are always saying "I will fight for you!!"

We don't want anyone that will "Fight" for us, we want someone who will "perform" the job to which they will be elected. We want common sense, calm rationale, firm convictions that reflect our own, and above all honesty, integrity, and morality.

These "fight for you" mentalities are "over-kill" for self grandiosity. Obama falls well within these bounds.

Uh Oh ! Akagi And Tim Agree !

Teddy Kennedy and the girls sold out The ARVN "Ruff Puffs " ,who were Handling The NVA and Cong.

Carlos !

Shhhhhh ! I kinda like Akagi,but don't tell him,O.K.

It's fun yankin' on his leash !

Dissing his own people....NOT!!!
Obama isn't dissing his own people, Americans, because he isn't an American. If he were, he would march down to the court house, pay a few bucks for a certified birth certificate and prove he is an American.
He will not, because he can not.
Obama is a pathetic fraud.
His behavior shouldn't surprise anyone.

Tim
I don't serial bad mouth the US, I am critical of it when it is deserved and in the 1973-1975 period in regards to Vietnam there is much to be critical of.

I'm not a big fan of Mr. Buchanan but
he absolutely nailed Obama in this piece.

Baseball
".....HO was our ally in WWII and an admirer of America's fight for independence ...he would have made a great ally of America if we had let him ...instead American indo-China policy was to support the French and Eisenhower was poised to bail them out at Dien Bien Phu if Britain would have gone along with the plan ..."

But Ho was sold out at Potsdam when the US agreed to let the ROC disarm the Japanese in the north and the Brits and French to take the south. The ROC forces basically ended Ho's short-lived regime in Hanoi. When Ho then started to fight the French as he had the Japanese, the US supported the French and yes Ho could have been a key ally in SE Asia and a bulwark against both the Chinese and Soviets.

The US also threw many of the Filipino resistant fighters over the side too who helped the US in the war. The raid on the Cabanatuan POW camp (the Great Raid) would not have been possible without their help and after the war the US turned against them as they were viewed as "Reds."

My understanding of Esienhower was there was a plan to use nuclear weapons to save the French in 1954, but he opposed their use saying he wasn't going to be the one to drop a nuclear weapon on another yellow race in 10 years. He also opposed the use of them on Japan in 1945 as I understand.

The policy in Indochina had nothing to do with freedom which included the citizens of the RVN. The leaders of the RVN were corrupt and often brutal...recall Diem and his actions against the Buddhists? And Thieu was corrupt as well. In a choice between Diem and Ho, it should have been Ho, but the US bet on the wrong horse to use a Truman phrase.

geez Tim... lighten up
.

Akagi
Are you saying we should still be in Vietnam?

That's Right Akagi,The Taiwan Firster !

You're an expert when it comes to " no honor ".

You won't go back to Taiwan and still Suck on The Great American TEAT ,even as you serial badmouth America.

Have You No Honor Yellow Fellow !

FDR Nation
We as Americans are a FDR nation, and the Conservative experiment from Nixon to Bush has been a moral and economic failure.

Americans are reclaiming their liberal secular traditions and abandoning Conservatism because it has only borne bitter fruits and put America into decline. Nixon, Ford, Reagan, Bush I+II have created 5 recessions and 1 depression.

Additionally Conservatives have lowered the overall status, prestige, and power of the USA around the world by sending our jobs away to the dictators in Communist China, importing and legalizing illegal workers (Reagan 1987), bailing out Wall Street Thieves, failing to protect our nation from Terrorism on 9/11, sending our troops into battle w/o armor, allowing OBL to escape, and most recently losing two wars as they've happily bankrupted the treasury squandering the Clinton surplus.

Conservatism is a fantasy that does not and cannot work because it fails to take into account basic human nature and uses deficit spending to create a false economy which is later raked with debt.

Even Alan Greenspan who was worshipped by Conservatives for decades admittted that he failed to account for greed and corruption in his calculations on running the Fed.

America is tired of broken promises and policy failures of Conservatism (such as Bush's small government philosophy which ballooned the size of the federal government 60% in only 8 years). Americans want to return to their Liberal traditions and out of the swamp of Conservatism. We are an FDR nation.

The first paragraph is a gem.
Whether you agree or disagree with Pat, you have to admit that the guy can write with conviction.

"Supporting the north against the south would have been no better. As I said, a communist is a communist."

The US wouldn't have had to without US support the RVN would have falled (as it did in 1975 when the US pulled US support for the regime in 1974) which is exactly why Johnson started sending in troops in 1965 as he was told (and correctly) without direct military assistance the RVN would fall. If the US had backed Ho in 1954 or even 1945 the whole thing would have been very different and all communists aren't alike. The US supported Tito in Yugoslavia and Mao (and later Deng, Jiang and now Hu even though after the Deng reforms how communist China is is a matter of debate) in China.

I will say the US response to the RVN though from 1973 onward was nothing less than shameful.

I don't see how anyone can call what happened peace with honor...there was no honor in regards to the US for sure.

Unprecedented In American History

Using the WH's own formula, GWB has "created or saved" more jobs than any President in history. Under their formula, Bush created or saved more than 32 million jobs.

BTW, I "saved" 150,000 American jobs while performing the calculations.

JimP
You used the term "orientals" and the term is geocentric. In the US, Asia is to the west and the term basically means "east" coming from the Latin oriens meaning basically the place where the sun rises and not unlike the Japanese term Nippon. However, for some reason many American Asians view the term as offensive and your use of it has thus nullified your inclusion in the Liberal International by offending an associate membership of the Victims R Us coalition, We be victims too.

Taste great, not filling
Obama is nothing but a demagogue, a figurehead, a charismatic speaker tuned only to the receptions of the desperately naïve willing to cling to any shred of hope offered by someone else to pay. His words are an empty promise, selling a product without substance. Marketing tailored only to mine out the adoration of those desperate for the answer they want to hear; their payment license, their return, limitation.

Obama is bold three inch high red lettering at eye level wrapped around the empty calories and sweet tasting sugary blandness that is today’s vastly over compensated and incompetent American managerial elite. He is the mass marketing Hail Mary play of a desperately inefficient bureaucracy some demand for others to pay. The deadweight of too much invested in advertising, middle management, cronyism and payola at the cost of a dwindling market share pushing this product devoid of substance to only a few foolish, hypnotized, thinking they want to buy.

Yet, their ultimate goal is to ensure that this is the only product available. Allow them the monopoly of license they seek and the consequence will most certainly be dire.

Now there's a communist flavor dejour?
If the US hadn't had this blind and stupid idea that all communists were alike . . ."

Actually just like roses, a communist is a communist is a communist. It makes little differnce if their attitudes and plans vary from one another, a communist is sytemically anti-freedom in politics as well as in economics.

I would rather we had had the good sense to realize that we had no vital interests in Vietnam to warrant the sacrifice of so many lives and so much of our wealth and prestige thereby avoiding the conflict altogether. We gained nothing from Vietnam but a very bitter lesson from which we have still not profited.

Supporting the north against the south would have been no better. As I said, a communist is a communist.

.....HO was our ally in WWII and an admirer of America's fight for independence ...he would have made a great ally of America if we had let him ...instead American indo-China policy was to support the French and Eisenhower was poised to bail them out at Dien Bien Phu if Britain would have gone along with the plan ...

They aren't actually with three distinct linguistic groups. China has has hundreds of languages, Singapore is as racially diverse as the US and their cultures are pretty much intact, no?

"Actually, Oblunder has already displaced Dhimmi Carter from the #1 dishonour post of "worst POTUS ever"

That honor would probably go to Buchanan and then Pierce and Johnson and then Harding, Carter ranks usually from the mid-20s to low 30s, bad yes, but hardly the worst.

svpallava
Carter won because Ford was seen as a fool as his comment during the second debate of "There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe and there never will be" confirmed this idea.

The slumping US economy and the Nixon pardon didn't help. Still it was a close election. If not for the pardon and the Eastern Europe gaff, Ford would have won.

indy
"...man's inhumanity to man didn't start with the United States of America and that we used our might sparingly..."

I suppose that depends which side of the might you were on. Many in Latin America would disagree with that statement...the Chinese who witnessed US gunboats going up and down the Yangtze to protect American missionaries and were one of the western powers the were involved in sacking Beijing during the Boxer Rebellion would also disagree.

Actually microace (11:29)
I would say that Carter got elected because the 18-year-olds in question viewed him as "anti-Establishment" (rather popular rallying idea amongst college-students only shortly before that time) and Ford as "Establishment"--along with many older/more-mature adults having residual anger against Nixon (Watergate was still a relatively fresh memory, and Ford was his unelected VP. Even with those, Dhimmi only squeaked through.

As for Carter's defeat, it was much like what is said of the French in WW2 (he clobbered himself due to his incompetence, already evident by late 1978, compounded with indecisiveness in handling Iran Hostage Crisis)

vonryansexpress
"....the Straights of Formosa."

Like for example the Marshall Mission which tried to force Jiang to accept Mao and the CCP into a coalition government and when Jiang refused the US cut off all aid and then the US stated it had no intention of supporting Jiang when the expected PLA invasion of Taiwan happened and the CIA gave Jiang and Taiwan 6 months? Those straits?

Of course things didn't quite work out as the ROC Army defeated the PLA at the Battle of Guningtou in 1949 and then in 1950 there was Korea and all of a sudden the US decided that Taiwan was indeed useful for its purposes and sent the US Navy into the strait...those straits? And then from there we have the crisis in 1954 and 1958 and 1995.

One may also argue that Pat's grasp of history is pretty lacking as well especially in regards to Hitler and eastern Europe.

A better question would be...
"When did this become the duty of the president of the United States?"

HOW did this become the president of the Untied States?

michigander
They went to the polls and voted, but too many of their so-called compatriots, a.k.a. RINOs,jumped on the Barbie Boy wagon to paradise.

and communist Vietnam...
Ho was a nationalist first and a communist second and in many ways not unlike Sun Yat-sen who himself was basically a Marxist and the government he helped establish based heavily on Leninism. The pro-American regimes the US supported in the south were no less brutal and much more corrupt that the regime in the north.

The north may have represented tyranny, but so did the southern regimes the US supported.

If the US hadn't had this blind and stupid idea that all communists were alike and would have understood SE Asian history knowing that Vietnam and China had been age-old enemies for centuries, Ho could have been brought into the American camp, but instead the US supported the French who weren't all that pro-American and the British by giving Indochina back to the French at Potsdam and the rest as they say is history.

And might I add there is nothing wrong with admitting on US soil or not that in the past the US has made grave mistakes in its relations with Latin America and others. Putting the Shah back in power for BP and the UK was a mistake, overthrowing democratic regimes in Latin America for ITT and United Fruit were mistakes, and the regime of the Shah was a doomed regime and little Carter could have done to save it outside of putting him back in power by military force.

Jon Favreau writes Obama's speeches, he's the guy who got rich in hollywood with the movie Swingers...about guys to go to clubs to pick up women...not much of a plot. His current writings are more like a horror movie.

Thanks Pat.
Great column. The answer to your closing question is that he's now campaigning on the world stage rather than just a national venue. He believes he'll be anointed the world's leader; the US is only a stepping stone and its wealth his personal resource.

Both of you are right about the younger people voting for him because he is black, I can remember the first election I voted, in 1976 and most of the people I knew that were 18 at the time were voting for Jimmy Carter, when I would ask them why they said because he wears Blue Jeans. I sincerely believe that Jimmy Carter won that election because of 18 year olds that didn't have a clue what they were voting for. They were voting for a guy who wore blue jeans, what they called a regular guy. Not one person that I asked the question to ever stated any of his qualifications for the job.

Agreed the Swiss are homogenous, but not in a way unachievable here. Can you imagine cramming together French Italians and Germans and have them keep their languages as they come together in a meeting of the minds. Switzerland did it, and except for a new language, it happened here too. But somehow, the Swiss have continued to keep uppermost what IS homogenous about the Swiss and used to be true of Americans. Love of liberty, self-reliance, respect for education, reward of merit, restriction of immigration to those that advance the countries interests, contempt for sloth and crime. We've lost it. First step getting it back is stop immigration and let the melting pot assimulate the blacks who have been de facto kept out. Whatever else the schools have been doing right or wrong, the kids are growing up evaluating one another by character not melanin. With no more Latinos coming in, a new generation should be more Norte Americano oriented in spite of themselves.

LouLouise & michigander
I did not vote for McCain in my state's presidential primary - and the ONLY reason I voted for him on November 4 was not enthusiasm for McCain but because I felt the alternative was unthinkable. In my opinion, I voted for the only candidate who had a realistic chance of winning on November 4 other than Barack Obama.

I remember in the run-up to the election, there was a lot of contentiousness on this site between solid conservatives who were divided on whether to hold their noses and vote for McCain because Obama was the alternative or make a statement to the Republican Party that we conservatives vote for CONSERVATIVES, not necessarily automatically REPUBLICANS. Although I was one of the nose-holders, I understood the feelings of those who just couldn't bring themselves to do so.

But that debate should be over now. However it happened, Obama is now president - and THAT'S the reality all conservatives need to focus on now and in the days to come.

Hopefully we're ALL agreed now that we're no longer going to tolerate RINOS. I've already said on this site that my days of voting Republican simply because the Republican has nothing better to recommend him than being the "lesser of two evils" ended on 11/5/2008. From now on, I will not vote for a Democrat wearing a Republican label REGARDLESS of the alternative. If the Democrats want to destroy this country under Obama and the Republicans have decided by now to be nothing better than passive accomplices, then the Republican Party has outlived its usefulness and should be abandoned by conservatives - and we'll see if such a party can stay viable trying to be Democratic Lite, which I'm betting it can't. And if the GOP re-discovers its conservative bearings during its present time in the wilderness, THEN conservatives should heartily support it.

What?
America overthrew the Iranian leadership in 1953, undisputable fact. It doesn't matter who was forced to retreat 7 years earlier. Just because someone comes by and ejects a burgler out of my house doesn't mean that same person can take over the spare bedroom and live there.

It isn't America's job to stabilize nations, decide who gets to lead or otherwise save everyone from everyone else. It doesn't lead to good things. America made Castro, Ortega and Khomeni, yet we pretend we're not responsible for any of it. Leave people alone and hit back on when hit first.

The bad guys' strategy is working, we're bankrupting the nation trying to find every bad guy under every rock. We can't defend America when bankrupt, is trying to protect people on the other side of the globe really worth destroying our own nation?

LouLouise, you wrote...

Actually, Oblunder has already displaced Dhimmi Carter from the #1 dishonour post of "worst POTUS ever"!

Obama Inferiority
Obama has no identity. When I see him, I do not see "black," for example. I see liberal. I see a vacuum that went through ivy-league aristocrat boot-camp and came out filled. Not with the depth of character that comes from sacrifice and enduring hardship, but with vicarious ambition of others who have a formulated character of fiction and fancy. I say "filled" but there's a deep emptiness in the president. It comes from the want of substantive nurturing. He is spiritually starved. He hasn't a heritage to be proud of- no legacy to live up to. The approval a boy seeks from his parents, Boy-Obama looks to receive from nebulous communities of people. He has a pseudo-freedom to author a screenplay everyday that receives accolades from critics but never converts to a big-screen movie where it would face the test of the free market. He will never experience what his predecessors experienced- conclusion to wars, tyranny defeated, populations freed, or American families prospering. Though he'll sure try to convince himself he did.

Only problem with Obama apologizing to Japan for the use of the A-bomb is that the development of the A-bomb was begun under the presidency of a DEMOCRATIC president who is practically a saint in the Democratic Party, with an overwhelmingly Democratic-majority Congress behind him - and used by ANOTHER Democratic president. So Obama wouldn't be savaging REPUBLICANS by issuing such an apology, he'd be savaging DEMOCRATS.

And for that reason, I'd LOVE for him to issue an apology to Japan for the use of the A-bomb against it. Then whenever some leftist troll comes onto this site praising FDR, we conservatives can fire right back that one of his own party's successors in the White House has now renounced him. And since presumably Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and other prominent Congressional Democrats would say nothing about Obama's apology, the present Congressional Democrats would therefore also be renouncing their own party's Congressional predecessors.

America is beginning to see
“What kind of leader is it who talks down his own country on foreign soil?”

Obama is the perpetual politician forever campaigning without a clue how to lead.

He tells people what they want to hear and tailors every speech to the audience who will hear it. With our enemies and some anti Americans in Europe, he expounds upon our flaws and faults so he can be part of their camp. With those who love America and see America as a great place, he speaks patriotically of our greatness.

The problem with this approach is that eventually the same people show up at both speeches. Or at the very least, they hear both speeches on the news. And then the hypocrisy and pandering are as plain as Obama’s ears.

It’s pretty funny that Obama doesn’t mind one bit taking the payoff that comes from being an American, but then he acts like he is not part of the process that attained those same advantages.

You are right, Pat. The more Obama talks, the more people see him for who he truly is.

Saccharin might be okay in very small amounts, but a steady diet of it can make one quite nauseous.

It amazes me that most folks posting on Townhall know more about history than our own President. Who writes his speeches? I am continually amazed with the level of ignorance they continually present.

Kevin, from MO, reply # 6—You have a very informative yet funny website. I particularly like your piece about Jeanine Garafolo (i.e., her Tea Party comment) who you describe as the “Liberal White Chick Protector of the Black Man.” Very, very funny piece. I encourage the readers to visit your site at http://www.theblacksphere.com. We need to hear the voices of African American conservatives. You've made a good analysis, but I think there's more to it than that. A very large element of the electorate (mostly idealistic young voters) voted for him because it made then "feel good" to vote for the first black president without any regard at all for his qualifications. I too would have loved to vote for the first black president. I only wish the repubs would have put one forward that I could vote for: Condi Rice, J.C. Watts, Michael Steele.

Liberals are Great
hey Pat, its the four great Liberals, Obama-Biden-Hillary-Kerry that stood up to AIPAC and the Likud cabal.
Where are the rightwingers?

More good points...

Anyone who voted for him and couldn't see
what a joke it all was is getting what they

do not deserve it.

America's Dirty Laundry
Buchanan's quaint metaphor is perfect. While we have plenty of dirty laundry, it is for us to clean it up in our laundry room. It is not to hang up and gather the "neighbors" around to examine; most of them have to burn their laundry in their own backyard because it is stained with blood.

Michigander
There was solid evidence of just who and what Obama is before his election, but a majority of Americans didn't see it, or didn't care, or agreed with him. The Americans who didn't see it were kept in the dark by the glowing accounts of the MSM and by their own lazy failure to examine him closely. Those who didn't care merely failed to think through the consequences of his anti-Americanism when he became president. A good many of the first two groups are starting to ponder the possiblity of buyer remorse. The third group will never desert him. Win or lose, for good or bad, he represents them exactly.

QParker
"had to be a Carter" and its a dammed shame. If only Americans could just learn a lesson once, like the Swiss, who have maintained hundreds of years of peace and prosperity by never losing their common sense. In times of peace and no visible threat, they paid the price of military readiness and guess what -- no threat appeared. (could it be that dead white fool, G Washington was right when he said If you desire peace, prepare for war)? In times of temptation, they curbed their appetites and spent only what they could afford, continuing centuries of balanced budgets. Why do Americans show character only in dire circumstance? I hope it isn't too late this time.

Buchanan writes...
"Obama is not only demoralizing Middle America, he is driving away the God-and-country patriots who are sick of hearing this rot from professors and journalists, and prefer not to hear it from their president."

Where were they on election day?

Obama
evades responsibility with the phrase It happened before i was born. Then he proceeds to hold the whole United States of America responsible for our whole history. Which of us owned slaves? Who persecuted Geronimo? Is it too late to court martial Decatur for burning the Philadelphia?

Obama, thy very name is hypocrisy. You are a champion of the double standard, a lip service hero, a master of talk pretty, do ugly ugly. Your toes of clay are showing. It won't stop at your feet. Time will reveal your lips are only fool's gold. By your fruits, we will know you.

Barbie Boy in the White House

Right on the button. I usually have a lot to disagree with you about your foreign policy articles but this one's on the nose. BO will never understand that man's inhumanity to man didn't start with the United States of America and that we used our might sparingly. He can't see that. He can't believe this country is the world's best hope. If he did he wouldn't talk it down.

Weak At Home And Abroad

Weakness at home leads to weakness abroad...

"You cannot spend your way out of a recession or borrow your way out of debt. And when you repeat, in that wooden and perfunctory way, that our situation is better than others, that we are well placed to weather the storm, I have to tell you, you sound like a Brezhnev era apparatchik giving the party line. You know and we know and you know that we know that it's nonsense. Everyone knows that we are possibly worse off than at any other moment in our history as we go into these hard times. The world has said so. Our people have said so. The Chinese have said so as we monetize our money or, as Mr. Geithner would say, we use quantitative easing, which all others except you recognize to be monetization. The Germans, the French, the Russians, and Pravda have all but said so. Our enemies have said so and have detonated a nuclear weapon, launched missiles, and seek to proliferate from on to another The value of our dollar says so, which is why it is falling like a rock. In a 18 months, the voters will have their chance to say so, too. They can see what the fundamentals say and what those not drinking the Kool-Aid have seen all along: that you are the devalued Leader of a devalued Government."

'O' can't cite to history.
He doesn't rebuke a foreign tirade because he doesn't know anything about American history in the 20th Century. He's not a scholar of history.

Mr. Obama isn't conversant on Trujillo, on 'Old Mossy', on anything to do with George Kennan or the Straights of Formosa.

Mr. Obama is a man that gets brought up to speed with cliff notes prior to any appearance, but cannot hide the one dimensional nature of his knowledge when improvisation visits him and is required in public.

Unfortunately for him and currently the nation, Mr. Obama only knows what he heard and learned of the country from the pulse of Mr. Alinsky and those that reviled America.

Mr. Obama apologizes because he's infected with ignorance as an alternative to savvy and depth of knowledge of America. When you have no foundational knowledge, you resort to genuflection and mea-culpa and hope that the eyewash, washes over the crowd.

This 'executive' has no clothes ... stop blinking, you'll note it.
